It's not a secret to anyone that companies vastly care about money. Some are still interested in their consumers being satisfied with the products – others solely care about profits. Unfortunately, it is a massive problem in our society, and organizations have yet to overcome this issue.

Corporations will go out of their way to find a method of making even more pennies, and it's fascinating how nowadays we don't really question anything. For instance, one of the best examples would be commercials. Those endless ads you see on a website that don't allow you to binge-watch your favorite video in peace, practically forcing you to get that premium subscription – it's truly a brilliant technique.

Well, this online user took it to one of Reddit's popular communities to ask folks about certain things that might feel normal today, but are just successful propaganda made by companies. The thread received over 61K upvotes in just a few days and almost 40K comments debating over hugely influential business tactics.

If someone, who has just arrived in your country, does not know the culture or the language, can do the job better than you, maybe, just maybe it is time for you to take your life and the skills that you have aquired up to a re-evaluation.

That's not really as true as most like to believe. It should read more like, Americans don't want to work a job that doesn't pay enough. Immigrants may not have that luxury to choose a job for that purpose.

I've been forced to quit, as in I was getting no shifts for 2 weeks and got a pink slip showing I quit in the mail, by a previous job. The manager was always threatening to replace me with someone she could get overseas who apparently could do the jobs that were unfairly piled onto me. It was a franchise. At the other locations everyone shared the all the tasks instead of all the cleaning plunked onto one person. Except for this location. The Temporary Foreign Worker program clearly states an employer can only use the program if they are not able to fill an important position with a citizen. I reported the manager. I don't have any issues with foreign workers. They're hired to do the jobs many locals aren't able to do for various reasons. Most are on farms and require a vehicle to get to but don't pay well enough to satisfy those who can afford a vehicle. Their wages are subsidized, so the government does pay them the portion the other portion. There might be tax credits involved.

Immigrants are not taking anyone's job. They are willing to do the jobs we are unwilling to do. Put this to the test. Stop immigrant workers and see if there is any fresh produce AT THE STORE. Or roads maintained or houses built or, or, or

What gets me with this is people (in the U.S.) who say that segregation ended in the 60s, so any affirmative action now is "reverse racism." If it takes 3 generations or so for wealth to leave, why is it so hard to understand that most white wealth now is still connected to overt racism then? The 60s wasn't three generations ago.

In my country internships are mostly funded by the government, or part of an education (which in Sweden you get paid for). Mostly because if interns have to be paid, less companies would offer internships. By not having to pay, they offer more spots and more people get to learn about the industry. So "unpaid internships" are standard, but not a single unpaid intern, if you can call it that.

When I was in college we had an option to do this for credit - like instead of taking a class you could work somewhere related to your major. I'm sure the companies just saw it as free labor instead of helping a young person with their future career.

Let's talk about young adults with disabilities , that don't qualify for disability or don't want to live on roughly $500 a month. My daughter is autistic and has multiple health conditions . She's 25 and loses our health insurance this year. Her medications without insurance are thousands of dollars a month , with insurance hundreds of dollars . She can barely afford the basic necessities in life working full time. There is a huge wave of autistic people coming into adulthood and into the workplace of they're able . Our economy needs a major overhaul , but it probably won't happen.

Unfettered capitalism has done this to the world. Capitalism is not a bad system on its own but it needs regulation and limits - both at the top and the bottom (ie the poorest people shouldn't ever earn BELOW a certain amount, and the richest shouldn't ever earn ABOVE a certain amount). Otherwise there are only incentives to keep the poor poor, and to buy politicians who will let the rich do whatever they want. Being rich allows you to do almost anything. In addition to the luxury lifestyle, fines don't mean much to you (unless you live in a place where they're a % of income), you can usually get out of jail terms, and you won't be affected by things like covid or climate change because you can buy privacy and safety.

Pure capitalism MIGHT work if there were no protections for corporations. Supposedly, if a company is badly run in a capitalistic society, it will fail. Except those same people keep being allowed to run more businesses into the ground while CEOs, etc., gamble with the stock prices. Lay off a few thousand people to get your stock up & then cash out & retire, then rinse & repeat at another company. If people who ran businesses into the ground had to pay back all of the lost funds to creditors & employees before starting another company, they might better regulate themselves. Check out the history of the "corporation." Go Nick Hanauer!

NO ONE is saying that. I have never seen it positioned as one or the other. It's always both. And posts like this are dangerous because a) household activities are responsible for around 25% of emissions - no, not the largest part, but not insignificant either - and b) ALL of us can do something DIRECTLY about household emissions. We can affect corporations too, by who we vote for and what we purchase, but we can start TODAY in reducing household emissions and IT WILL HELP. Top two activities that will help: 1. Throw away less food, and 2. Eat less meat, particularly beef.

I don’t know of any insurance companies that call themselves healthcare. Maybe some HMOs that actually have their own clinics and hospitals like a Kaiser Permanente. Regardless, you do realize doctors, nurses, social workers work for insurance companies too, right? And I’m not talking about only denying claims. There are providers that work directly with patients and go into their homes to make sure their needs are met.

    Garnet Mage

Yes, but at the end of the day, those providers are constrained by the goals of the company that pays them. If the company goal is to reduce expenditures, then anything those employees do has to support that goal. Insurance companies won't keep employees who consistently authorize overspending on treatments that aren't considered fiscally responsible based on company goals and standards.

A side effect of the law allowing pharmaceutical corporations to advertise in mass media -including a list of possible side effects- was that in 30 seconds commercials, more than half is devoted to mentioning scary things that will happen to you when taking the medication. I listened to people refusing to use an effective prescription due to the "horrible side effects" when such things are in the order of a fraction of one percent. This distortion is capitalized by the anti-vax, anti-science mob, as seen during the current pandemic. So, in the end, the vast amount of money spent on lobbyists and political contributions by big business pharma came back to bite them in the tail, and the whole society paid the consequences.

Why would any intelligent person take anything these companies say seriously? Many of the best-known pharmaceutical companies have been convicted of fraudulent practices and paid billions of dollars in fines—Merck, Pfizer, J&J, Astra Zeneca, Glaxo Smith Kline and others whose products probably grace your medicine cabinet. I am not about to ask my doctor. I trust her to know what I need, not some greedy drug company. They are in business for profit, so they want permanent patients. They aren't interested in helping people get healthy.

Technically, weeds don't exist at all. Where I live, they've now been rebranded to "wild flowers and plants" and are actively being handed out to plant everywhere because, as it turns out, bees are better off with more of these types of plants than they are with the garden varieties. Or so I've been told.

Dandelions are weeds in North America because they are not native to North America and were introduced by Europeans. They take over native wildflowers habitat. However luckily they are good food for native pollinators (not all introduced plants are) and due to their invasive spread it is no longer feasible to contain them and it would be worse for pollinators/other insects and native wildflowers/the environment to use chemical means to contain them.

I let dandelions, daisies and clover run through my lawns. They're great pollinators and very pretty too. I can't stand people who want total domination over their gardens. You know those middle-aged men (and it is men) who delight in mowing stripes into the lawn. It's nature, let it do it's thing.

Spot on. Our yard is overflowing with wildflowers as well as perennials that we and the former owner have planted over the years. Code enforcement in our neighborhood are real jerks so we have to keep the lawn mowed often but if it were up to me, I'd let it grow grow grow - our house is where all of the bees, butterflies, birds, and wildlife end up and I love being able to sit on my porch and watch them all.

Mowed grass lawns began life as drill fields for military forces. Flat open land that was pool table flat (groomed with rollers to perfect the surface) with grass to prevent muddy ground and close cut grass to minimize interference with motion. Stone plazas are uncommon due to cost. Later they were symbols of affluence when armies changed tactics and stopped fighting in tight formations where skill in military drill was required to survive on the battlefield. Large expanses of trimmed grass is expensive to maintain and does not produce useful materials. It simply demonstrates that the landowner is wealthy enough to forgo the income from growing crops or feeding livestock and pay the high cost of maintaining a lawn. Fast forward to today. Vegetable gardens are abhorred, flower gardens tolerated as long as they don't consume too much space and the useless trimmed grass lawn is king (in some places it is actually illegal to grow food or other useful crops due to this cultural bias)

"Weed" is a cultural concept, not a biological one. However dandelions may be invasive species in some places so I kind of get this, but a lawn of just grass is just bad. Get some biodiversity!

A weed is a plant that grows where humans don't want it to. It might be that it's an invasive plant that destroys the crops that humans are using as a food source, but it's only invasive because it's detrimental to the human food source. I've never heard of Big Grass - most weedkillers I see are for patios and driveways.

There's quite a bit of truth to that. Clover is an important component of lawns, but as soon as broadleaf herbicides became available, marketers did their best to convince people it was a weed so they would buy herbicides, and consequently need to buy more fertilizers too.

If you want to help pollinators, leave the dandelions in your lawn alone. They’re the first source of pollen in the spring, and the last source in autumn. They bloom whether it’s cold and rainy or hot and sunny, whether you’ve had no rain or too much rain. The leaves in spring make an excellent addition to salads, and the blossoms can be used to make wine.

In the 70s, health insurance was expected. You might have even got a pension. That fell by the wayside in the 80s when the Republicans under Reagan started even allowing companies to raid their employees' pension fund. Now, so many employers offer less than stellar benefits or none at all, the government health care under Obamacare became necessary for over 20 million Americans to get any sort of coverage at all. And you keep thinking that would matter to EVERYONE in the US, but 1/3 of us vote for reality TV stars with the IQ of a gnat.

Originally, offering health care options via a job, was one way to recruit you to join that company. Just like stock options and matching 401K which are now mostly defunct. Of course that was when there was dedication/appreciation on BOTH sides, and people stayed with their jobs for many years even until retirement.

I remember when PACs were made legal & so many people correctly predicted the downfall of the US Government, happening now. The insurance company I worked for at the time made its own PAC & sent letters to all employees implying that we would be considered as "nonsupportive" or "disloyal" to the company for not giving money to their PACs, even though they may have supported politicians who promoted the insurance industry but may have also supported other issues people didn't agree with. So some company, many years ago, made nylon stockings. All the workers were given a pair for their wives to try out. They discontinued making the same stockings, because they were high quality and never wore out, so these ladies never had to buy new pairs. They purposely made crappier ones after that. A lot of companies are doing it and it should be illegal. Not only because of the morality, but also because of the toll it takes on our environment to create (and have to transport and put to waste) 10x time amount of stuff that would otherwise be necessary

This is absolutely true for so many products. In recent memory only two purchases I've made lasted way beyond what I would have expected. My Nokia 9100 and first Sony Flat screen tv. The phone keyboard finally gave out after millions of sent texts and such. The Sony tv still hangs in my house to this day. I cant honestly remember anything else that has lasted as long as these two simple things.

It was pushed by the plastics industry back in the early 70s when laws were about to be passed to deal with the environmental impact of plastics. No, not biodegradable! That means it just breaks down in to smaller pieces in the environment and creates micro plastics which are arguably worse than an intact plastic item. Please don’t support biodegradable but instead compostable.

If the plastic or any other material enters the recycling process it gets recycled. The problem is that most things that can be recycled don't get into the process. The most important thin one can do as an individual it's starting the process by properly separating disposable items and making sure they get into the recycling system. Of course, consuming less, choosing sustainable options when possible and composting as much as possible are also things most people can do easily.

Some of them can be....but the fact that they use multiple different kinds of plastics for one product (the bottle, cap and label on a soda/water bottle are all different) and the fact that people don't clean, nor separate them means batches get ruined, and paying people to sort costs more than making new. The smart thing to do....is stop buying plastic. If we stop buying plastic. There will be no incentive to continue making plastic.

I overheard a woman explaining to a friend that she and her fiance had saved $30k toward their wedding and therefore were about halfway there. I just find spending that on a one-day party to be absurd, I wouldn't expect someone to drop 30k just to show they love me. Good gods, just tell each other you love each other and put the money towards a house

They're literally the most common color, of a stone that's being hoarded to present the idea that diamonds are somehow rare, precious, and worth the exorbitant amount of money DeBeers charges for them.

I'd look at it as one big party with loved ones and friends. When I get married, I wanna cook the food, bake the cake, have a small gathering (no more than about 35 people), and just have fun. It's a celebration to congratulate two people uniting as one entity, it's not supposed to show off to a bunch of strangers just how much wealth you have. That's stupid. Spend that excess money on a house or the honeymoon and make some damn memories!

As someone who did bake the cake, I can tell you don't do that. It's so time-consuming when you don't have any. Get your dress cheap, but nice. There are sales everywhere on decent dresses. You can do food buffet-style and have your friends tape your ceremony on their phones, if need be, but hire a decent photographer because those pictures live forever and you will look at them every day

Anytime you mention the word wedding while looking for venues or whatever the cost will increase by like 300%. My brother and his fiancee are telling the places they are looking at that they are doing a family reunion (we arent religious so no churches or priests involved). Their engagement party cost a fraction of what it could have been because they never said it was an emgagement party. Also any ring can be a wedding ring. Dont need to buy anything specifically labeled as such

But this logic applies to every single thing we dig up that has cosmetic value, gold, silver, opals, rubies, sapphires etc etc. they are all only cosmetically valuable because we, humans, have assigned that value to them for some reason I’m still trying to figure out. In fact, any human made concept you care to think of - time, money, traffic lights - only have meaning that we have given it. We are a species that relies heavily on belief and communal agreement that something means something to everyone (that we all agree that a piece of paper with a 10 on it has the value of $10, a red light means stop and Tuesday is the day after Monday)

Yea you took that out of context, or failed to understand what the saying means. The forever in "diamonds are forever" means that the relationship lasts forever. Specifically from times when gender roles were more stereotypical. If a man bought a woman something with a diamond/diamonds that would indicate he would never leave her, hence diamonds are forever

I never buy bottled water, due to living in a hard water area I use a Brita filter water jug and I fill my own water bottle from that. I know the Brita uses disposable filters but they are made from coffee grounds and recyclable plastic so you can break them down to harvest the coffee grounds for compost and put the plastic shell into the recycling.

They fight equal pay for women. They break up unions. They come against laws to promote Worker safety. They fought hard against public health insurance and making child care affordable. If you vote Republican, you can't complain about being poor.

And with my printer if I run out of black- the colors compensate so you end up having to buy all three or two! That's why printers are so cheap - you pay 3 times the cost in 2 purchases of printer ink!

It's crazy how much the brand names charge for printer ink cartridges. I order over a year's supply (all colors,) prefilled for less than the price of one brand name of ONE color. It's ridiculous that the machine won't print black when your out of magenta.

Yup. It's the same for toner. We've got a colour laser printer, and ran out of black. We got a non-brand-name replacement for the black toner... literally no difference whatsoever. None, except for the price tag. The brand name was at least 3X as expensive.

I've seen so many families be reunited by DNA sites. My best friend's partner discovered he had a son that he never knew about. His ex was pregnant when she left him while he was serving in Iraq. The son lived in an entirely different country. I was shocking by how father and son looked exactly the same, but entirely different accents. They never would have discovered each other without it. Like so many things, there's good that comes with the bad.

Single-use packaging - like plastics- would be fine if they were biodegradable. But, of course, that all costs more, so they won't do it. It's cheaper to make packaging that pollutes the environment, but they make more money, so they don't care.

In my country basically every town has their own Facebook group for baby gear rotation where people give away the barely used baby stuff their child doesn't need anymore, like diapers that are the wrong size for the baby, formula, clothes etc. Paying it forward makes life better for everyone, especially since babies grow so fast and barely get to use their size appropriate equipment.

I recently learned that cradles and cribs are a modern invention. There aren't really any historic examples of 'furniture' that can be qualified as a special bed you put your baby in that go back past about 150 years ago, right around the time of the industrial revolution. Before that, people just kept their babies with them all night and all day. It turns out it's actually really weird that we just set our babies down and walk away

Although this is true, sleeping under a duvet or next to a non-breastfeeding parent is a big risk for SIDS for a baby and cribs are a necessity. Babies sleep best in a crib, on their backs, and as close to the mum as possible (within reach is ideal). Or at least make adaptations to the bed the baby sleeps in to make them as safe as possible.

If you are an agricultural worker aka farmer, breakfast is insanely important. You cannot work a 12 hour day [usually more] on a farm and get by with a cup of coffee and croissant. You need a huge breakfast. And that is not a "marketing" scam. It is important. You just "fasted" for 8-12 hours. That's why it is called break fast.

Here in Argentina our breakfast is a couple of toasts, coffee with milk or mate (🧉 a typical drink like tea) and sometimes some salty biscuits or croissants. We have a big lunch, like pasta, meat and salad, or something grilled... so we cut the day in half and all go back home for lunch. That's our way. But I remember my father saying that phrase of the most important meal being breakfast!!! In this country people mock northern countries for eating a sausage at 7am and going to work smelling like fried potatoes or garlic... But the truth is we smell like that when we go back to work in the afternoon. And we have to stay at work until 9pm... Our dinners are late, very light, and in a rush just to get to go to sleep 😴

In Japan, like many countries, employee taxes are handled by the employer, including basic deductions for things like insurance and home loans. Only need to file yourself if you have a more complex situation and/or are self-employed, and the process is entirely free (though accountants and tax software are available). It is free and easy now for most people after the tax reform. I’m seeing companies offer tax filing that previously had no footprint in tax processing. How they market now is to get people their tax refund “now”, which usually involves fees and extra charges. It’s preying on poor people who need their money now. If they world just wait a week or two, they’d save a couple hundred dollars.

Don't blame the sheep either. They would very much more want som herbs and weeds to eat along with the grass. In fact I heard of a dairy, that will not by milk from farms that do not make sure of their fields having a certain percent of "weeds" and herbs in them.

Women shaving. In the US, Women shaving any part their bodies wasn’t even a thing before WWII, but all the men got drafted to war and razor companies took a big hit, so they successfully convinced all of us that natural hair growing anywhere out of a woman’s body besides her hair and eyebrows is disgusting. I’m talking specifically about western culture/the United States. Evidence of ancient Greeks and Egyptians/etc shaving has no relevance in this instance.

There was also the fact that there were silk and nylon shortages during the war, so women's legs were on show so unshaven legs were noticeable. Then of course you had the swimwear fashion changing in the 60s+ and more skin was seen. The swimwear companies wouldn't show models with bikini lines in their ads, so razor companies profited from this too.

That's why women just need to stop giving a F**k! I respect n support any person who prefers to shave, (their body, their choice!) I shave sometimes n I keep my lady bits in check (I wouldn't if it didn't get so fucken itchy in the summer)but my armpits n legs rarely ever get shaved. My husband was weirded out at first, n I was so conditioned to believe that it was gross to have armpit hair that even I was judging myself. But then it grew out n it's not very thick/dark like stubble is. you can't even see my leg hair unless you're right next to me. I don't get BO like I used to, I don't sweat as much as I used to, I don't chafe when it's hot anymore! It's dope. But I just started dying my armpit hair fun colors!! I started dying em because ppl would give me dirty ass looks (mostly men) so I figured, why not draw more attention to it! If I'm already getting dirty looks n judgement.. I might as well get THE MOST disgusted reaction possible. Go big or go home baby!!

A game developer did this in the 90's, hidden in the TOS was something along the lines of "by using this product you agree to forfeit your immortal soul to ______" no one caught onto it. Eventually the publisher pointed out that they did this, and the fact that no one said anything about it (indicating no one read it) was the entire reason they did it in the first place.

I don't like holidays in general, but I absolutely resent Christmas. Every year it's the same. Hundreds of people clogging up malls just to fill their carts with unnecessary amount of ridiculously marked-up stuff. Last year, I went gift shopping on the 27th - empty mall, lots of discounts. I only got gifts for my closest people and asked in advance what they wanted, so I don't get them any random cr*p that will end up in a drawer forever.

Nothing wrong with drinking milk if you like it. If you don't, there's other sources of calcium. Calcium absorbs better in an acidic environment, that's why Tums is not a good calcium supplement. It doesn't have an acidic environment. Calcium citrate is best absorbing.

Heh, I know y'all don't much care about diet impacts on the world or even other people, but plain old fact is, there are much better sources of calcium that don't expose you to bovine growth hormone, antibiotics that breed antibiotic resistant bacteria, or stuff most of us aren't designed to process after being toddlers, or the extremely high sugar and fat contents. I mean, I get it, but it's actually not good stuff, and that's aside from the impacts of producing it.

In the 90s, there were quite aggressive campaigns in Finland about how milk keeps bones hard and helps growing children. Not to mention that milk prevents osteoporosis. Neither statement is true, but people still believe them. In the nordic countries, many tolerate milk because of a genetic mutation that has sometimes been helpful. I am not one of them and have been getting enough calcium from other sources all my life.

The amount of nonsense talked about milk is astonishing, from both sides of the divide. Yes it is a very useful and nourishing food. If it was a deadly as some people suggest then how come Northern Europeans based so much of their diet around it for thousands of years? On the other hand the idea that it's the only way to get calcium is ridiculous because we're the only mammal that drink it (or eat foods made from it) past weaning. Elephants, giraffes, lions, whales, they all manage to get enough for strong healthy bones without milk, don't they?

The most ironic part is that a large portion of the world's population is lactose intollerant. In fact we are not ment to consume milk after the infant state. Those of us who can do that trick, is actually the mutant freaks, who have evolved to use it as a nutrient source of food in a scarce enviroment that did not offer many other options. Go to the middle east, and you will see that dairy products do not form a part of the original local diet, and they are still doing fine.

Ahhhh …. The Hallmark Days. For me … no cards, presents, flowers. It’s outrageous how much money is spent on “holidays” that don’t really exist. I don’t even want Christmas presents anymore. Too commercialized.

The woman Ann Jarvis wanted Mothers Day in her church to praise her mother. When Frank Hering made the first public plea for a Mothers Day in 1904 was some years before Ann Jarvis did. When the card and floral companies decided to cash in on the celebration, Ann Jarvis got mad, and was even arrested for protesting the holiday. She died in poverty. When it was made into an actual holiday by the President they picked the carnation for the flower because it was Ann Jarvis mothers favorite flower. The government also made the 2nd Sunday in May the date for the celebration after Ann Jarvis mothers birthday. Frank Hering just wanted to make the holiday to celebrate all mothers no just one mother.

It also makes those who have no family left, feel bad because the only thing they can do on those days is light a candle for their Mother. Its the same for Father's day.

TIL that a nurdle is "a small pellet of plastic used as the raw material in the production of plastic items". It is also a verb meaning "to score runs in cricket by deflecting (the ball) rather than striking it hard", but I don't think that relates to toothpaste!

The toothpaste companies themselves actually admit that they don't recommend using an amount larger than a pea, since the concentrated ingredients used can be potentially harmful if swallowed in large quantities. Yet, they always show a big gob. ???? So hypocritical.

If it could just be limited to accompanying free entertainment, that would be better as well as understandable. But it seems to be encroaching everywhere these days, including at gas pumps, as Peter H mentioned. I just hope it doesn't spread much more. And I hope advertisers know that if they aggressively flash patterns at me while I'm trying to read a news article, I will take note never to buy that product.

On a laptop at any rate this is relatively easy to fix. Just edit your host resolver file to point to localhost for the advertisers' domain. Result: website does not complain that you are blocking their adverts AND you don't have to see them. google how to edit "hosts file" if you want to see how to do it.

The thing that amuses me is that I see this whinge most often from Americans, who are also the people who run the line that universal healthcare isn't 'free' because it gets paid for through taxes. They don't want welfare paid through taxes, but they want corporations to give them stuff for free. Crazy people.

I think people are perceiving an increased aggression and quantity of advertising, though. It's not so much that there is advertising at all, but the commercial breaks get longer, the length of commercials are sometimes longer than the video clip they're preceding, and the still advertisements are no longer still but flash so they're impossible to ignore even if you've already looked at it.

Because she has never been in debt or had anything more that her phone bill to pay, she was refused because her credit score was too low. Explained that to the bank who were no help. Exactly. We started paying down debts and noticed that our credit scores were dropping. I applied for an increase on my credit card when I needed something, denied due to "declining credit usage." I'd rather live debt free than pay credit interest but there are times you still need credit.

40 Ideas People Believe To Be Normal But Are Actually Propaganda Created By Corporations, According To Folks In This Online Group Not discussing your income with coworkers. At least in the US, employees are protected, so they are allowed to discuss income amongst each other without fear of getting fired for it. However, a lot of companies have kept the idea that it is taboo or that your job may be at risk for doing so and a lot of people still buy it to this day. Yes, most people that live in the US know that all states (except Montana) are "at-will" states, meaning that they can fire you for no reason at all, meaning that while technically they won't fire you for discussing pay, some companies will not like it and find any excuse to let you go, so keep that in mind. Also, some companies will try to stop if right off the bat by having it in your employee handbook that you are not to discuss pay, so make sure you check that out in your case. My company actually has the opposite, stating that they will never go after someone for discussing pay, and they even have it posted in public areas. However, I'm not naive and understand that while it may seem that way, they can just be doing that to protect themselves, so who knows. I've been there for a few years now and we have not heard of anyone getting fired for anything that could be even remotely related to pay discussions. The point of my comment was to let people know that the idea of discussing your pay with other employees being a "no-no" or taboo is an antiquated idea started by greedy companies decades ago to help keep the average worker from demanding better wages that they rightfully should be getting in the first place, and that legally they can't outright fire you simply for doing that (with exceptions, of course). I myself have no issues letting anyone know how much I make if they ask, and if they use that to get themselves properly compensated, then I'm happy for them at the end of the day.

I really hate this recurring topic. Response 1/2 Has anyone ever discussed their salary with their co-workers and had a good outcome? Let me give you some reasons why non-disclosure is actually a good idea. 1. People have different backgrounds, experience and educational profiles. Two people hired to do the same job might be wide apart in terms of what and how they deliver. 2. A professional, employee centric company will pay people what they are worth, not the lowest or fixed price or pegged against co-workers. 3. Some of the talents of a hired person are not obvious to their co-workers. Sharing them may not be appropriate and expose confidential information. Maybe “Lara” was hired because she speaks fluent Spanish, which is a skill the company has to pay more for, but it’s not widely known the business is expanding into Spain. Maybe Lara speaks Russian - something valuable to the company but not something anyone wants to share right now. (Cont…)

I really hate this recurring topic. Response 2/2 3. So, Lara and “Mike” discuss their salary and Lara is paid more than Mike. Lara is immediately uncomfortable as this disturbs Mike. She worries about her job performance. Is she really worth more than Mike? When she makes a mistake, she immediately worries she will get fired because she is overpaid. Her relationship with Mike becomes strained. 4. Mike is resentful of Lara. He watches her every move trying to figure out why she is paid more. He has no visibility of her special skills, potential or importance. When she makes a mistake, he is quick to point it out. When HE makes a mistake, he is hard on himself, seeing it as justification for his lower worth. 5. Meanwhile, both hate the company for putting them in this position and “unfair” salaries. Not everything is about evil companies stifling workers’ rights.

If the boss finds out you're discussing pay, s/he will find any reason to fire you because you're a trouble maker and being insubordinate. I have seen it happen over and over again. In fact, Congress regularly holds hearings about the wrongdoings of companies. IBM is in the hot seat now for age discrimination. A few years ago T SA would 'transfer' the 'bad apples', the ones pushing for a union, transparency, equal treatment, but when they couldn't or didn't want to move, they were fired. 'Merica.

It wasn’t a corporation, it was the temperance movement. In pioneer times, homesteaders were required to plant an Apple tree, at this point apples were basically inedible on their own but used to make a mildly alcoholic cider which at the time, was often safer to drink than straight water. Eventually, edible apples were propagated and drinking alcohol was considered by some to be a social problem, so the temperance movement promoted apples as a healthy food to keep people from thinking of them as a source of booze.

My hubby lived in Japan in the early 70's (Navy brat.) Western fast food got started popping up around there around that time. There were huge lines for any American fast food restaurants, it was crazy. There was a thirst for Western food there at that time. His parents didn't go to them, instead ate the healthier local food. "We can get that stuff when we get home."

I took my daughter to a concert and she asked for a light-up wand or what it was ,everyone else seemed to have one, I was like maybe, if it's like $20, $25 tops (it was pretty big about the size of a standard flash light). That thing was $50 dollars!! for one night! I was like, no way. We got the overpriced T-shirt, you'll live without the flashing light. I couldn't believe how many people (mostly teenage girls) had them. Just throwing money away. (It was a good concert thought)

Carrots contain beta carotene which is metabolized into vitamin A, which is important in proper functioning of the eyes. One of the first signs of Vitamin A deficiency is night blindedness. So I guess it's not that far-fetched, although carrots won't give you night vision :)

It was to hide the fact that the UK were using radar.... Which is daft because radar was invented by a German Christian Hülsmeyer who first used radar to build a simple ship detection device intended to help avoid collisions in fog.

It was to hide the fact that the British had working radar that could be used to detect incoming enemy aircraft, a significant advantage at the time. Similar tactics were employed to hide the fact that the Enigma code had been broken.

It was a piece of propaganda to explain the Beaufighter Night Fighter onboard Radar. It was a way to explain how British night fighters could nab German night bombers in the pitch dark. So they came up with carrots as an excuse for the pilot's superior eyesight, while instead was a combination of land based and onboard radar.

Loans for loans oh what a tangled web we weave....................!

The landscape of advertising has evolved at an astonishing pace, with brands constantly seeking innovative ways to capture consumer attention. One fascinating example of this trend is a campaign that ingeniously repurposes iconic imagery to convey the fiery sensation of a popular product.

By integrating creative elements, much like KFC's unique approach to spicy fried chicken, companies craft a narrative that resonates beyond traditional methods.

I'm surprised I haven't seen someone say the idea that cars are indispensable, at least in the United States. Unless you live in one of about 15 cities in the US, life is much more complicated and difficult without a car, and even then our cities are almost completely designed around accommodating car access and traffic.

The electric car will be standard starting in 2030. We don't have the required infrastructure in the US for that. Charging stations, length of charge ( miles that can be driven) in the US it's woefully inadequate. Lets not even talk about train travel. Amtrak has a four percent on time rating.

So… unless you live in some of those few big cities… cars are in fact indispensable? US has never invested big time in public transport and now finds itself where it is because of it. Japan is an example of a country that has nailed it with their train system- you can quite literally set your watch by it

40 Ideas People Believe To Be Normal But Are Actually Propaganda Created By Corporations, According To Folks In This Online Group Someone mentioning diamonds reminds me of """""chocolate""""" diamonds. What are they in actuality? Industrial diamonds (if I remember correctly) that are more common and/or less 'nice' than normal rocks, but clever marketing has convinced some women that they're "exotic".

Australia has some of the largest deposits of diamonds in the world, but a large percentage of them were differing shades of brown, which is not as desirable to the completely clear diamonds that deBeers has as part of its monopoly propaganda. So, enterprising Aussie gem dealers dubbed the brown diamonds with such names as "Chocolate" or "Cognac" to make them more appealing to buyers.
