As if the prom night itself wasn't stressful enough, there are many things that girls have to figure out before attending it: makeup, hairstyle, shoes, accessories and the most important - the prom dress.
These days it is really popular to shop for this last ingredient online. You can pretty much find whatever you want, you don't need to leave your house to find it, and somebody will even deliver it to your door! Cheap shopping literally couldn't be any more convenient. Unless you decide to buy your prom dress online, that is. Because what looks good on the internet doesn't always look good in real life! Some of these unlucky prom-goers managed to save their epic fails of dresses by mending them; others opted out for Plan B - throwing the ordered dress to trash. Take this list of funny fails as a cautionary tale.
From mermaid style dresses turned to blobfish, laces looking like grandma's doilies and a dress that turns you into a character from Handmaid's Tale, this compilation of online shopping disasters is truly hilarious.

The dress on the left is a wedding dress by Hayley Paige and costs thousands!
order your dress online... just be careful and check the site from where you're buying... do some research first, especially for such an ocasion!
I can't stop laughing because this dress on the left costs like smaller car.
They could have tried a little harder on the top part, don't you think? Circles, hahahaha.
I've ordered clothes online and sometimes I wasn't too happy with what I got. I'm a "little Ole Lady now, but we did have prom dresses in the 1970s, and I wanted something a little more "me" and a lot less "off the rack." W didn't have tons of money, so the first year, I started looking at the clearance racks, especially if the store was going out of business. The next year, went through a lot of old magazines and found a dress that I thought I could improve upon. Then, my mother, her friend and I came up with "My dress." It wasn't as expensive as some dresses that I looked at and I felt like Scarlett O'Hara at the barbeque. I was impressed with how I looked and that made me glow from within. At this point, if you can't get your money back and a new dress in hand quickly enough, start looking for deals. Maybe someone just got married and they don't need the brides' maid dress anymore. Sometimes, ordering online is great and other times you'd rather wear the box it came in.
It's because the left one is the original designer's and the right one is a rip-off of the design from some cheap website. Obviously, they use the original photo to sell it, but don't do quite a good enough job copying the design. :/
you buy suspicious chinese stuff, you get suspicious chinese stuff. Simple as that
There are fantastic chinese stuff, cheap with ordinary ones, expensive with good ones, everywhere is the same, don't mark label on China..........
Load More Replies...Yeeeeah. Prom and wedding dresses are something you really need to try on, BEFORE buying or renting
She looks like a red fish. Not good for prom night, but ready for halloween ^^
You look like some kind of fish of the sea. If there is a Charlie the Tuna day somewhere, or a Poseidon day, you will fit right in.
The sleeves look like maybe they're wearing a t-shirt underneath.
Load More Replies...Ladies, please order dresses according to your body style, otherwise you will look like a whale in a potato sack
Simple solution - cut out the bra pods, wear a skin-tone bra and the dress is fine. Oh, and also stand straight, helps a lot.
It is not the same dress as advertised....the embroidery on the bodice is far more intricate an embellished on the website than the dress that was sent to her
Load More Replies...this one actually has a pretty top part, if you take out the dumb, weird pad things and just wear a nude cami underneath. Could be saved :)
Not the worst we have seen, but the bra pads have made it appear worse than it is.
This one is salvageable, kind of nice actually. Wear a white tank instead of the boob things, or wear a coloured tank to add some brightness. She could also add something to the skirt to hide the cheap fabric.
I think this dress can actually work. She needs to get rid of the boob pads and wear a skin tone body camisole.
Have the top lined. These dresses are not age approate for these girls
This prom dress is the most similar one here. With more rhinestone in shapes, the dress will become more beautiful and good for prom party. Adda
I think the model is standing on a chair, so just get get to the prom early, stand on the first chair you see and don't move all night
Lmao she would look like the statue of liberty
Load More Replies...Maybe if she was 7 foot tall and had huge boobs? Yep, the model is on a stool or chair, but the dress shouldn't bunch up on top without a chair.
It's not just the length. The prom girl is tiny. A good tailor might be able to take this in, but sometimes you just can't!
Haha she could use it for Halloween and go as a beautiful green cake.
Do order, but keep in mind the model was size 36 adn 180 cm tall. And you are size 36 but 150 cm tall.
Well, it's definitely a disappointment, compared to what you were promised and payed for, but it doesn't actually look that terrible.
Dress is screaming IRON ME! it shouldn't be as bad as previous 3.
Load More Replies...Seems a lot of the commentary forgets that these people aren't getting what they paid for... the material itself is cheap as is the workmanship and that something that isn't portrayed in the advertisements no matter what size the model versus the size of the buyer.
Actually: they ARE getting what they pay for. The designers use fine fabric and spend a lot of time and effort to come up with magnificent designs. The girls bought dresses at prices less than wholesale of the originals: they did get what they paid for. You are fairly unwise to imagine that you will pay pennies of what the original cost and actually get something with the fit, quality materials and construction of the original gown. Sometimes the savings just isn't really a saving.
Load More Replies...Just need to iron it and a petticoat, but since you're a different body type than the model, it won't fit the same way as shown in the pic.
A legit dress wouldn't need a petticoat, it would have one built in. And that is not remotely the same fabric or the same shape skirt. I'm a professional seamstress and I've altered about a dozen knockoff prom dresses just this year and have worked in bridal/formalwear salons. Trust me, it does not just need ironing and a petticoat. There isn't even enough room under that skirt to put a petticoat.
Load More Replies...I SWEAR the person or people that made this dress are color blind, and untalented. SMH.
Bodycon dresses like this are meant to be worn skintight. If your shape is different to the model in the ad, the dress will never look like it does in the ad.
I don't even like the model dress to be honest, the mermaid dress in general seems like such a silly trend to me. It looks like they're going to trip with every step, or like they didn't pull there pants up enough (in this case the skirt part of the dress, but I'm sure you get my saying?)
I can't believe people are saying this is pretty. Even the tulle hates the random spots of glitter, that's why it's so limp and sad.
Not like picture but wearable for a taller people with big boobs!
technically this one isn't so bad, the model probably has a petticoat on that makes the net stand out, the hip needs letting out slightly and the bust needs taking in. All these tips you don't get told when buying on the net, also the seam isn't big enough for alterations which it should be in a shop. Do yourself a favour girls, go and support a local shop and get what you looking for
The accents on the sheer top aren't even remotely the same as in the advertisement... the failing in a lot of the dresses are the details, at the least.
Different design but it looks good on you. Just need to get rid of those goofy pads and replace it with a pretty half bra or cute cami
Cut the fabric above the breast area and cut the arms off. Perfect😂😂
Load More Replies...That one wasnt half bad... Maybe have a seamstress make it hang off the shoulder and its a pretty close match.
This is why proper grammar makes all the difference😂😂
Load More Replies...Remove the mesh and go strapless, or you the lace to make gathered straps and it would be quite pretty
Yeah that kind of alteration would be like $20 max and take a day? Not too terrible lol
Load More Replies...It's heartbreaking for them, I expect they were all excited their dream dress arrived and then it all ends in tears bless them too.
I think the consistent thing that bugs me about these is the recurring bait-and-switch they do with the materials; embroidery/decoration is reduced or entirely absent, the fabric is different, etc. The one on the model is clearly not satin, for example.
A lot of these online dresses are made of this shi++, thin, stiff costume material. Why they are such a "good deal".
Nope, don't think it could EVER look like the original....even with some fitting.
Load More Replies.......Because price on an original dress is about $1500 not $150 from the China's sweat shop replica.
The idea that these girls think they're ordering quality designer gowns from cheap-o fast-fashion factories is the funniest part!
At least you have great taste in dresses. If you DID get what you ordered, you would look amazing!
well, i don't think this is THAT bad actually... needs some fixing for sure, but...
I agree. It's really just the difference between having a tailor and buying off the rack.
Load More Replies...Looks kinda like it was made from old fashioned linen towels. Badly.
The bodice... it could be a home made toga for a slightly upscale Grecian themed sorority party.
Load More Replies...The problem with this one is that the dress that she bought is made out of a completely different material than the one in the picture. The different texture of the fabric makes the dress look less sheek and hollywood and more costume for a play at a church
Looks like she could appear in the new season of Game Of Thrones.
I like it, it's so Megara from Hercules, love it, it just need you to go with someone who knows how to fix it. And iron it.
Did anyone else notice she is standing on the tub? Sorry, fellow BPs, I think this one is a total fail, needs to be re-sewn!
oh my, this looks like a lame disney princess costume for kids :D
Would've had better results with an Elsa dress that lights up as it plays Let it Go. Which might have been cool since all the kids do molly now anyway, a dress AND a light show
Load More Replies...Passable, in my opinion... but what's with all the teenage girls wearing see through clothing?!?!
It's not fitted correctly, the embellishments are all wrong, and the sleeves are different. It's not that it looks bad, it's that it's a completely different dress.
Load More Replies...bad that you got conned... BUT, you could make it look better i guess its not the worst
I do have to admit, this is something my 70 yr old mom would wear.
Load More Replies...Aww she's cute! Maybe some parts of that are salvageable... Needs more bling and better fit at the waist but not hopeless.
Take on the waist a bit. Go to your local craft store and spend $5-10 on bling. I've done it before and made clearance rack dresses look better than the original for my girls.
Load More Replies...Lovely girl, perhaps she can fix the dress herself and it would be ok, no??
Loiks worse cause it isn't fastened on her left side, and she's standing on the hem.
I think she's not able to get it fastened, that's part of the problem :D
Load More Replies...My experience with knockoff dresses tells me that she tried ordering it in a custom size, which is almost always a recipe for disaster as well as a sure sign you're ordering from a knockoff site, and when it arrived it was not the right size, despite having submitted measurements. ALSO, the Chinese knockoff sites don't claim to be Chinese. Most of them go to great lengths to appear to be American, or British, or Australian, depending on what country they are targetting, so it isn't until the dress arrives with postage that says China or you try to send it back and they tell you you have to ship it to China that you find out that is where it really came from.
obviously... that's the problem, she did not get what she ordered
Load More Replies...Yes this one isn't too bad. A lift bra would make this dress look great on you! And maybe add a necklace
It's a nice dress, but definitely not what she ordered... That's a completely different dress
I think if it were more fitted and tight, less flow-y around the waist like the first picture shows it would look great. it just needs to be tailored to her body proportions
Again, Elie Saab couture vs. what was probably under $100. There's one born every minute...
I think my shower curtain is more.. how can I say prettier? XD
Load More Replies...Looks like a plastic dress. Not even similar. Use it for a shower curtain.
Then again some of these are wretched. Yet spending money on prom you should take the time to go in person n try THOSE dresses on as well.
Speaking as a decent seamstress, I wouldn't want to.
Load More Replies...Get a different size and it should fit fine, the skirt is pretty cheap looking though...
its a famous mistake. but people still order their prom dress online.
obviously different dress and the model had it tailored to fit, as did the rest of them.
If you want that kind of bust without a bra, you better be using some tape to push everything into place.
Yeah, that type of bodice is only good on a certain boob type. I've never been able to pull that off. I like the dress though.
I love the hemline/design of the bodice. All that gaudy decoupage-like sparkle? Not so much.
Load More Replies...You should consider casting for a Bollywood musical in that dress!
Unless she ordered the white and got purple instead, I see nothing wrong with her dress except for the orange jewels and the difference in the pattern. It's a nice dress
this is actually nice as long as they are honest about what they are sending
Some of the dresses look completely different and if you look at the models showcasing the dress, they are all older women who are very thin! But yea, good idea not to buy clothes online, I've learned my lesson!!
Not even close to the same dress. I have to agree - cheap costumes.
The ones with nude allusion seem to be the most problematic (funniest)
At least this dress doesn't have the "nursing pad" bra insert!
Load More Replies...Yeah for a bridesmaids dress for a family members wedding that you kind of hate.
Load More Replies...Wait, what? Did they send it in pieces? Even if put together, it won't match the picture.
What happened? Did it fall apart in shipping? Horrible, not even close.
I love how this is the second girl to order this dress and both of them got VERY different things sent to them.
Steam or press it very carefully & go I guess. Looks better than most of these other ones. At least it's not hanging on you.
I think the shoulders should have some padding to make them like the dress on the model.
Seamstress here: you wouldn't be able to fit padding into the shoulders, and they aren't cut to hold the shape of the original shoulders. There isn't enough fabric to change the shape, either.
Load More Replies...The models are grown ups with life experience showing, not just skin. It's too much like dress-up.
Where to start...the shape of the bodice is made all wrong. Whoever cut out the pattern pieces did a horrible job. She's wearing the top underneath because her boobs would be hanging out the side if she didn't. That's intricate allover beading on the bodice of the original. The knockoff just used sequined fabric and called it a day. I can guarantee you the original was not that lowbacked, and it had some structure in the bodice like boning and bra cups. The knockoff has none of this. The skirt is fuller on the original and made of a much nicer chiffon. The knockoff has cheaper fabric cut much slimmer because rule 1 of knockoffs is make it as cheaply as possible.
Load More Replies...Get it fitted so that there's no/little side boob, and the empire waist is where it's supposed to be. Will look great
It's cut out way too much around the boobs. You could try to take it in ,in the back to draw the front back. I don't know if it would be enough. Horrible.
Get professional measurements taken. I got a wedding gown online n it turned out gr8
OMG! I've seen the same dress on eBay! So glad I never made a purchase.
i think you mean purposely . Also the original dress is quite nice
Load More Replies...This is totally SAVEABLE!!!! Come on people, send me your unwanted dresses
Even dresses you see at the mall may or may not look good on your body type. Why would you chance it by not trying on a dress?!?
Somewhere here i just have to ask a) why would you buy such a really special item online, unseen, unfitted and from China of all places? i mean honestly i might order a TY shirt online but not the dress i wanted to remember forever. And B)--i guess this will prove i'm a gramma, but really these are not "prom dresses"--you should be technologically bright enough to know that these photos are 'shopped', that colors never match what you see online, that sizes vary incredibly, that a beautiful dress from a local shop will make you look stunning and if you found a dressmaker like me in January, i could put you in a dress that would make you a star. Just sayin.........
Most of those websites don't say they are fin China, and often go to great lengths to make it seem like they are legit companies based out of the US or UK or wherever they are trying to attract customers. The girls aren't often know that they are ordering from China until the dress arrives with "China" on the postage. And since these websites often steal photos and claim they are getting overstock or last year's merchandise, everything seems legit. I've even talked to girls who found a dress they tried on and loved at a local store, and then found the dress online for much cheaper, thinking they were getting a great deal, only for what arrived to be different from what they tried on in store (since of course, they were unknowingly buying a knockoff). These websites prey on those who are on a budget or don't know any better. Shaming the people who fall for it doesn't help as much as trying to get the word out.
Load More Replies...To be fair, this looks like the wrong size. Perhaps simple as that. Perhaps it would look good if it wasn't too big.
I have seen the real dress in person. It's made of jersey. The knockoff is made of something cheap and not stretchy. And oftentimes the knockoff websites offer a custom sizing option, which almost always results in dresses not being remotely the right size because the Chinese kids making them in sweatshops don't know what they are doing. And the top is too big but the hips clearly are way too small.
Load More Replies...She can make it work. Just take it in. Nothing can fix that color tho, but I guess she chose the blue herself.
Exactly as pictured. Did you think you would look like the professional model??
That's why I say 'first consider how it looks on your body type before you order. Her waist is different than the models
Load More Replies...Hah complaining about a dress not fitting well enough when you are consiously ordering a dress that shows all your private parts at 16-17. Good thing you are worrying about the right things. That damm dress fit.
She most likely thought there was a nude slip underneath. That's how most lace dresses are.
Load More Replies...I do not see how this could be an appropriate dress for prom if it had come as it was supposed to. Not that I think it is wrong for women to show what they want, just these girls are 16-17. They need to be taught their beauty is more than sex appeal.
If pedophile a*s boys like you would stop objectifying their bodies in the first place, it wouldn't f*****g matter.
Load More Replies...China wastes so much fabric on this c**p.....who would ever wear this stuff ?
HEY. DID YOU KNOW. That these dresses are knockoffs, and therefore even in the right size would still look terrible? Because that's what's really happening here. It's not the same dress. She unknowingly bought a knockoff from a scam website that used stolen photos. It is not a matter of right or wrong size. Sincerely, a seamstress who knows what she is talking about.
Load More Replies...To e erroneous commenting on all of these about the fit, It's not the fit, it's the fabric. The cheap nylon fabric they use will never flow and fit like the original knit jersey. They use real photos of high fashion items and make cheap imitations to sell.
I feel like it would've looked better if it wasn't so wrinkly. But honestly, they have different body types, and the size is wrong.
people keep saying, "just order the right size." What do you think, they see a dress they like and go, OK, I'm going to order THAT one, except I'll order it in the wrong size just for kicks. Jeez people, the freaking DRESS is f'd up, don't you get it? The size is f'd up too!
Way cheaper materials that don't drape correctly. No amount of "fixing" can make up for cheap materials
Load More Replies...This one's pretty similar. It's certainly closer to the original than any of the others.
For pete's sake people, build your foundation first! No dress will, look good with crappy bra, bad posture or until properly fitted!
Well you won't have another chance to buy another prome dress online Darcie Henderson.
Oh dear. Does anyone else think this is so inappropriate for a prom?
Yes, seems like she got what she paid for with this look
Load More Replies...No, not the right style for you. Until you understand your body type, always try on first. Took me years, still try first, every time.
I was going to say the same thing. I'm a big girl, and I know the struggle of buying clothes online. Unless it's from a shop that I know, and that I have purchased numerous clothing items from, I'd never buy anything from an unknown store, online.
Load More Replies...Get professional measurements taken. Buying dresses online it warns you that it wont b exactly like the pictures
ummm material is different beading is cheap looks like dollar store sticker gems and the lacing at the top is so wrong would look cheap even on a skinny girl. if you know anything about fashion these 2 dresses are clearly different
Load More Replies...This is Monica Belucci in a very expensive designer dress. The left side is a girl scammed by people who plagiarize designs and do it with cheap fabric and inaccurate patterns.
Load More Replies...Yes and those dresses woken by the model ate not only edited but they have been professionally fitted and altered
She just got the wrong size and has no boobs. Nothing wrong with the dress itself from what I can tell.
Honestly it looks good. It's just a different color. Add a better fitting bra or a lift bra and voila!
Poor kids are expecting the dress to make themselves look like the model, also
I think she took a picture of the new prom dress she bought to replace the online one
Load More Replies...Beautiful dress - looks like people are disillusioned about body type and their actual measurements.
That's not the point - the point is online shops in China advertise beautiful dresses, then produce and sell greatly inferior knock-offs. The only things these girls are disillusioned about is thinking they can get a beautiful dress for super cheap. In this post, the dress in the first two pics (left) are the advertised dress. The two pics to the right are the dress she received.
Load More Replies...Actually it not just about body type, it's the weird fits. It's also the SERIOUSLY cheap and not at all as advertised embellishments as well... Not to mention random fabric replacements that don't even have the same drape as the fabric on the advertised dresses.
The dress does not look that bad, and you get what you pay for. And different body shapes.
Really am struggling with the issue! I like it, Pamela Mitchell is spot on
Maybe the positive that comes of this is that kids are learning and sharing around social media that buying Chinese is not the way to go. Things like this are more powerful than learning it from your parents or through news organizations.....
It's all in the material they use. Unfortunately, buying online often gets u the cheaper version.
Just needs an underdress https://www.google.nl/#q=mermaid+hoepelrok
Load More Replies...it was on a mannequin, which really isnt indicative of how its gonna look on a human being....
No kidding... "not built like the model"... you mean the model of a human? Wait, what's that called? A mannequin??
Load More Replies...Wow, schools let kids wear such plunging necklines? I dunno how I should feel about it. On the one hand, love cleavage. On the other, rules!
A teenage girl should in NO way, shape or form be wearing this ridiculously inappropriate dress to a prom. I weep for the youth of America.
To be honest, this dress is inappropriate almost anywhere. Celebrities on the red carpet tend to wear extremely revealing dresses (in my opinion), whiches makes those dresses seem more acceptable, than they are. Though for sure, a teenage girl has not much idea about what kind of message she sends in this dress. But
Load More Replies...Same dress just doesnt fit her the same. Im hoping her next prom dress covers more skin. Good gravy. Where are the parents???
What kind of parent let's their TEENAGE daughter go out dressed like that???
She can't be serious -- this is a prom dress? My daughter wouldn't get past me out the door wearing that.
looks like the picture...? and the dress on the website she bought it from looks see trough also. So... Its just as the picture!
It's too short and cheap material, tho still cute maybe it for prom tho
It looks just like it should. It's the women's own fault for thinking that she would look like the picture even though she has a different body shape and isn't standing straight.
Looks like she has clingfilm on one arm :l just cut that bit off and roll with it :)
Yes it's too filmy, not sheer like the model's. I agree, cut it off and it will look sexy sexy ;)
Load More Replies...Many people have experienced mishaps when buying clothing online. Shopping for a prom dress on the internet might seem convenient, but it can lead to unexpected outcomes. Buyers who fall victim to misleading online portrayals might relate to well-known public relation mishaps.
Learning from how companies have dealt with image damage could help avoid your personal shopping disasters.
All of the body shaming really kills this post. And idiots don't understand fabric quality, construction, accuracy, etc... It's not the girl
I agree. I sew for a hobby and making something with good quality fabric can change how it looks on a person.
Load More Replies...People keep blaming these girls for being "obese". Yes some of them are on the bigger side, but these dresses are cheap. They're cheap replicas of very expensive dresses. If these girls want quality, find a seamstress who can make you something like the picture but you're still going to have to pay for it. You can't expect to get a designer dress for $30 online. If it seems too good to be true, it is.
Agreed. It has nothing to do with the girls size, there is an obvious difference in the style and material. The bigger woman in these photos have dresses on that are huge on them. You want quality you have to pay more unless you're like me and shop thrift and estate sales.
Load More Replies...Okay, so here is my wedding dress and the dress that I bought it based on...from China. The beading wasn't exactly the same, nor was the lace in the middle, but I adjusted it to my liking. I chose the material and color and sent them my sizes and managed to only spend around $100 on this dress, plus a few hours of time on adjustments. This was my second online purchase for a wedding dress as the first one was pretty, but not what I wanted and they refunded my money no problem. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the original site this dress came from to compare prices or anything else about it. Double check your sizes and material, check and verify online reviews, don't spend too much money that you might not get back and order far enough out that if it doesn't work you can still get something else. I would also suggest trying something on in a similar style to see if that even works with your body type. Not every dress does. 2017-05-16...7b3bee.jpg
That's it. Check the details, and the reviews. Also, many pics show a girl in a dress that is not her size or does not fit her body - and well, it looks bad. Still, half of these dresses are horrible, hard to deny.
Load More Replies...China does make pretty and beautiful dresses...it's all down to the cost...if it's cheap, don't expect anything nice...you want nice, don't expect it to be cheap either...
It's just really bothering me that everyone is trashing a whole country and don't even understand that higher quality garments they buy from the front street stores are also made in China (India, or Bangladesh, or Guatemala).
Load More Replies...What I don't uderstand here is the level of being naive. 1. Models are superslim and tall. THe buyers are usually obese and short. Or at least not size 34-36 and 180-190 tall. 2. So first - measure your sizes for the sizes of ordered dress, second: order from a good quality store, not China for heaven's sake.... Sorry if I sound harsh, but c'mon...
If you like the dress you find on a china clothing site (or any clothing piece) simply save the pic to your computer or phone and then go to google image search. Upload the image, and you will usually find the company who is ACTUALLY selling that dress/piece of clothing. That way, you can get exactly what you want! =)
1- These parents allowing their kids to wear sheer tops!?!? Original photos too sexy...NOPE 2- why ordering online in the 1st place!?
