This Online Group Shares Wholesome, Creative, And Illegal Things Made By Prisoners Behind Bars (35 Pics)
A prison is like a little city. It has a library, a beauty shop (which is just a fancy name for a hair cutting room), a medical wing, a rec yard... Of course, facilities vary from institution to institution, but if we exclude countries that have a different philosophy on incarceration altogether, most places are pretty similar.
So we're told. For the average person, life behind bars remains a mystery. And quite an intriguing one. How do people organize themselves under such extreme circumstances? What do they miss? How do they spend their days? A TV show, for example, might give us an idea but if we constructed our worldview based on what we saw on the screen, we'd end up like Truman Burbank. In an illusion.
Instead, let's take a realistic look at how inmates get by — the subreddit r/PrisonWallet is perfect for this job.

Prisoners From Indiana Were Given Cats To Look After As Part Of A Rehabilitation Scheme. Here Is One Prisoner With A Hat He Knitted For His Cat!
I read somewhere abou similar project (possibly this one), that it significantly reduced prisoner recidivism.
Imagine if we approached prisons as places to make amends, to heal, to gather resources (like education, connections, anger management) to go out after the sentence is done, and live differently. EVERYONE WOULD BENEFIT.
I think an important aspect of prison reform in the U.S. would be to start by remembering that prisoners are human beings. This picture says it all - look at the love he has for that lil' kitty cat!
“Lady”, An Electric Guitar Built Illegally By An Inmate In A Pennsylvania State Prison
And a potential hiding place for drugs and weapons. (Source: I work in a maximum security unit in a men’s prison.)
Load More Replies...Gorgeous! I say if folks are spending time being creative, it’s a GOOD THING!
So once he's released, the government should have a fund for him to get what he needs to start his own custom guitar making business. Good luck my man! ✌🏾♥️🤘🏾✊🏾
So... they confiscated this from him? Yeah, I'm getting some really angry feelings right now... This is fantastic!
where did they hide something this big? And what a friend on the outside to slowly smuggle in these parts. wow
Why was it illegal to build, and where did he get the pickups and such??
Read the story. When bp steals from reddit they include a link.
Load More Replies...Naturally, not everything that gets made in a cell is as innocent as you see in these pictures. "I'd, unfortunately, say one of the most common items to craft in a prison is a shank, [probably] due to how easy it is and the inadequate system of rehabilitating prisoners," a representative of this subreddit's moderator team told Bored Panda. "Many of them stick to crime or violence while inside of prison."
"Zip guns utilizing .22 ammunition are also popular because [the rounds] are easy to sneak in. Not to mention the fact that when you break down a gun to its bare bones, it's a simple machine that's quite easy to replicate."
However, we decided to leave guns out of the equation. We already know about them, plus there's so much more! "I [also] see a lot are tiny figures or artworks made of what is practically trash," the person running the subreddit added. "It allows prisoners to express their creative intentions while locked up."
These Are The Best Chess Figures I Have Ever Seen And These Were Made In Prison
Andy Dufrense finally finished his chess pieces before he decided to leave...
Yeah, but they killed their whole family and disposed of them in the wood chipper...still want that chess set?? Damn right you do!
Load More Replies...This is really impressive. I would be curious to know what material the figurines were made out of and what materials were used to carve them.
Go to the Maryhill Museum in WA State and you will see a chess set collection to knock your socks off.
Prison Issued Bleach Soap Carved With A Plastic Spoon And Empty Bic Pen
If this is the sort of things that inmates are crafting, I say let them keep them.
What the hell is bleach soap? I can't find it on google, just that you don't mix bleach with dish soap.
I found it on google. It is soap with beach in it to lighten your skin color. Seems harmful. But perhaps this is not what it is on the image? Perhaps there are soap with bleach in them for some parasite killing effect or something? I mean soap kills bacteria and viruses without bleach
Load More Replies...Why confiscate these? If they were confiscated and not just on this post for other reasons, that sounds like bullying to me.
I am not sure they are confiscated, perhaps they are just for display. Prisoners who seem to have no aim in life are revealing talents that maybe have not been seen before, provides hope for when they are released.
Load More Replies...Asked An Inmate To Draw His Interpretation Of The Prison System. They Are Only Allowed A Blue Pen. Color Was Done By Melting Skittles And M&ms
This displays a great deal of talent and meaning. I hope this is on display somewhere.
We had a guy who had no money but would barter/trade greeting cards he painted with Skittles and M&Ms. Every time a holiday was coming around he'd set up at one of the tables with all his cards on display and guys would pay him in food items so they could send a nice card with Tweety Bird, Powerpuff Girls, Paw Patrol, etc to their loved ones.
It makes somewhat sense. The spirit of the confederate states is still carried on in the prison system.
Load More Replies...Why would they only be allowed one colour? Is there a (logical) reason for that?
Perhaps they were only allowed one pen, and it happened to be blue. Only one pen, because the others might go “missing”.
Load More Replies...As a former public defender, we called it "skittle art" and it was an honor to receive skittle art from an inmate.
Interestingly, in 2019, the U.S. incarceration rate fell to its lowest level since 1995, according to recently published data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the statistical arm of the Department of Justice. (It is not yet clear how the coronavirus pandemic may have affected these numbers as statistics for 2020 are not expected to be released until later this year.) But despite this downward trend, the United States still puts more people behind bars than any other country for which such data is available.
The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1,833 state prisons, 110 federal prisons, 1,772 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,134 local jails, 218 immigration detention facilities, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in U.S. territories.

The Face Of A Guard Made With Soap By A Prisioner In Brazil. All Made With Soap Even The Eyes
Anytime You Feel Life Isn’t Nice, Remember This Brazilian Prisoner Who Dug An Escape Tunnel For 5 Years To Burst Out In A Guard Room...
The moderator of r/PrisonWallet who took their time to reply to us considers the subreddit's community pretty diverse in their background and intention of joining. "I've talked to members who are former police officers, former prisoners, some interested in the craftsmanship of the people stripped of their freedom, some similar to me in the way I greatly care about prison system reform."
If you took a look at the subreddit's newest posts, you wouldn't see many. The latest one goes back 21 days. However, members are still engaging with them. "The community is somewhat active but ... and you can even notice older posts getting comments, showing new members are fairly common as well!" Maybe you want to be one of them?
The Paper Mache Heads Made By Frank Morris, John Anglin And Clarence Anglin When They Escaped Alcatraz Prison
Such a small space. I would wanna be out of there as soon as possible myself.
Wasn’t made illegally, prisoners had access to art and craft equipment until the day the guards found these
They were made illegally. The supplies were smuggled from the workshops.

A Way Prisoners Make Rose's For Their Loved Ones Made Of Jolly Ranchers
Never bite down on a jolly rancher. They're so sticky.... I had a crown and I was kinda biting one and it stuck to my crown and pulled it right off.
I believe this comment belongs in the "24 Relatable Moments When People Came To Understand They Are 'Officially' Not Young Anymore" story.
Load More Replies...Beautiful! If I did read the caption I would have thought it was made out of glass!
Where is a prisoner gonna get jolly ranchers?... Just curious
It's called commissary. Their family puts money into their account so they can buy different items like clothing, tennis shoes, candy, ramen noodles etc. I know this because I used to be a guard. When you're in jail/prison you aren't cut off from everything lol. They can buy headphones, Walkman's, batteries, magazines, chips, thermal underwear and all kinds of stuff. We aren't living in North Korea and some people are in prison for some minor charges. They don't just get bread and water for every meal lol.

Two Picture Frames Made Out Of Chip Bags An Inmate Had Given My Mom Whilst Working The Jail As A Nurse
Actually no, she could’ve gotten fired over that. Inmates often make cute little things like this as a way to work on compromising staff members - male or female.
Load More Replies...My dad made the same thing! and he made rosaries out of plastic walmart bags. It was very cool.
I love it that she not only kept them but also put them on display.
I was thinking how intricate that looked... than I saw the Tyler Perry's a Madea Halloween
interesting that inmates allowed to give and employees allowed to receive. many tried to give me little tokens, from earrings to carvings but i wasn't allowed to accept. some were really beautiful.

Maybe not reduce, but they definitely have the Recycle, Reuse part down!
Most often we would find trash bags full of water wrapped in sheets with a braided sheet handle. Essentially a water dumbell. Called them waterbags. Those guys could get fit as hell with those.
Surprised they had access to so many batteries. A handful in the end of a sock would be a pretty serious weapon.
They should just let them work out. Exercise is very important for mental health. And happy prisoners are less violent.
Larger stronger prisoners are more dangerous. It’s a 6 and two threes.

Gambling isn't allowed because if they can pay then more fights happen. I work in a prison.
Load More Replies...I used to confiscate these things a few times a month. Really easy to make. In jails and prisons most inmates gamble over food items like chips, cookies, noodles. Food is money and canteen day is payday.
Just out of curiosity, why do you have to confiscate these things?

Prison Chess Set Made In The 1950s - Made Out Of Toilet Paper, Dried Bread & Shoe Paste
My former chess coach told me that she made one set just like this while being in prison during the communist regime in Romania. She told me that playing chess was the only way for her and the other inmates to forget about the situation they were in.
Toy Dachshund Made By A Prisoner Of War In Bristol, Gifted To A Family Near The Prison, Ww2
This makes me so sad and beyond the obvious, I don't quite know why.
Perhaps what this sweet little toy so sad and poignant is was that it was made by a prisoner of war. Perhaps they had a family back home with children. Prisoner of war camps were often horrible and the prisoners were treated like they were inhuman. I think the little dog toy shows that despite so much pain and trauma that the POW may have gone through, they were still able to create such a sweet, little toy that represents happiness.

The food some of these guys figure out how to make with limited resources. I still eat the ramen, tuna, and cheeto stew I used to watch them make daily. It's really tasty!
Ok, what the heck is cheeto stew and should I be scared of it?

This Prison Tattoo Gun
Or as we called them in hightschool, a tattoo gun. We used india ink we stole from the art room. Walkman motor, mechanicle pencil, abutton, an E string and a bent spoon handle. Good times.
We had a guy steal an officer's computer right off his desk so he could take out the hard drive (anything that spins/vibrates) to turn in to a tattoo gun. Found the gutted computer in the trash shortly after it was missing. Guy got caught because he bragged about it. He was generally a stupid person, but he was creative.

I'm slayed! As I scroll through, the most poignant posts to me are the POW posts. The items displayed show so many ways human beings, the human brain, is capable of doing to keep itself alive. As aware most of us are of just how unspeakable POW camps/prisons were .... are, to have the amazing ability to not only collect the items needed ...... I can't even. Totally Slayed.
Gabby M - Not all countries or conflicts were the same - POWS were often kept in better, freer conditions than regular prisoners and given access to materials so they could earn pocket money eg the beaded snakes/embroidered items.

When I Saw This Subreddit I Immediately Thought About These Inmates That Built A Computer Near My Hometown
What kind of IT they have in this prison for letting an unauthorized device connect to the network ?
They may not have had a domain controlled network (or not all of it may have been domain controlled), especially if 100% of it was hard wired. A contraband wireless device might be possible, but a desktop PC?! That shouldn't be a contingency that requires planning.

Inmates used toothpaste as glue to put up pictures. Also they'd patch up cracks to keep out bugs, but I was told by a pest control guy that the bugs get attracted to the sugar so it was pretty self defeating.

Fact: the majority of prisons in the USA are owned by private companies that have contracts with the local, state, and Federal governments.
