I hate it when Christianity is dragged along the floor by the people who would have avoided Jesus like the plague if He walked up to them, in a modern form and position relative to the one He did in Bible time. He'd probably get shot. This man is not a true Christian. We are not supposed to do anything to hold anyone else back from Christ and criticizing then it's exactly that .
Pride Month started as a way to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion, which occurred in the early hours of June 28, 1969. Unfortunately, police raids on bars catering to New York's gay community were common at the time. But on that day, people felt fed up with years of harassment by authorities and chose to fight back. This decision lead to an uprising and erupted in neighborhood riots that went on for three days. They inspired activism and ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement because one year later, the nation’s first Pride marches were held.
"Pride offers a moment to celebrate our victories and remember our battles," Justin Bengry, Director of the Centre for Queer History at Goldsmiths University of London and convenor of the MA Queer History, the first degree of its kind, told Bored Panda. "But it should also be a moment when we reflect on the fact that neither our history nor our activism started in New York in 1969."

Yeah, I did my military service in 2008 and even back then I must say the swedish military was great at including different sexual orientations (and women, even though it was not many back then, at least not where I was. They had just started making fire proof sports bras to go with the uniform, and period supplies were free.) we had discussions and theme days and any type of discrimination was very frown upon. (I guess it still happening despite this, sadly.)

At a military camp, my cabin somehow ended up with four bisexuals, 3 gays, 2 queers, 3 trans, and 1 heterosexuals. The training instructor tells us during morning drills “shoulder to shoulder! THIS LINE IS NOT STRAIGHT!” And I replied “cuz we’re not straight!” I was in trouble but it was totally worth it :)

Martha Catherine Brenckle, professor of writing and rhetoric at the University of Central Florida and treasurer for the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida, said that Stonewall has taken on the imagination of the community. "Remembering what happened at Stonewall and now Pride Month says we will no longer tolerate harassment and intimidation," she told us.
"When Obama visited the Stonewall Inn and gave it the designation of a National Monument, the place and event took on even more importance, especially for those who weren't even born yet," Brenckle continued. "Knowing History is crucial to knowing who you are and where you are going in the future. Every step we make politically and socially has been from standing on the shoulders of all the activists who came before us."

According to Bengry, many unfortunate events took place even before Stonewall like that at San Francisco’s Compton’s Cafeteria in 1966. They show how trans and queer people were long subjected to regular police harassment and how they resisted it. "In the 1950s and 1960s, homophile activists in the US and UK protested against unfair treatment under the law and lobbied for reform, bravely identifying themselves as homosexuals," Bengry added.
Of course, this kind of activism was happening in some places in Europe too. "Histories of queer people who advocated for a fairer and more just world extends even into the nineteenth century. In the 1860s and 1870s, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, a German lawyer and journalist, created new terminology to describe those like himself who desired members of the same sex and spoke openly against laws that criminalized homosexuality," he explained. My best friend from the Philippines told me how it’s common in Manila for groups of local gay men to catcall, make lewd gestures, and even follow foreign male tourists, and how uncomfortable the victims are. Angry adult during school diversity and inclusion week shouting about how it's making kids question their sexuality versus every normal adult saying well yes, that's part of the point. Not one of them will end up any different because of this, but all will hopefully learn how and where to get support early so they can live as who they are. Despite having lesbian aunts that I saw all the time, my parents never actually *told* me about anything lgbtq+ and I learned what being gay was in 5th grade, it was hard to understand the concept and different labels at first but it got easy. My parents aren’t homophobic in any way, they just somehow assumed that because I had gay aunts that the knowledge of the lgbtq community would spawn in my brain? The internet heaped largely with my understanding of it.

You cannot be made gay or trans. You are born gay or trans. Knowing gay and trans people exist just helps you realize who you are. If you got a dog and raised it around only cats and punished it for acting like a dog, it'd act like a cat. But it'd still be a dog. LGBTQ+ people are still LGBTQ+ no matter how you raise them or what they're exposed to. They just meow because you make them.

Why yes, this is so true. Before that fateful day in 1993, there were no gays. After that everything changed, my neighbour was affected, the guy at the clothing store started acting different, the oil change shop I went to hired a girl mechanic, by 1995, they were EVERYWHERE! /s
Raising awareness is now far easier due to social media and how convenient it is. People use it as a great tool to show the diversity of the community, discuss the history of LGBTQ+ advocacy and share opinions about the gains and setbacks made by the people.
"Social media offers amazing opportunities to highlight queer voices and to amplify the widest diversity of experiences across the spectrum of LGBTQ+ people in our communities," Bengry mentioned. "We can use social media to share our histories and celebrate our victories. We can call others to action and use social media to demand change."
Unfortunately, it is far from perfect. "It also gives voice to those who would do us harm, those who attack our community and especially the most vulnerable and marginalized amongst us." Bengry added that as much as we use these platforms to do great things, to share knowledge and resources in an accessible and safe way, "we must remain vigilant and push back against those who would use it against us."

From what I read in Rainbow Warrior: My Life in Color (by Gilbert Baker, the creator of the original pride flag), he (Gilbert) and the other people who made the first one (like, a big one) ... I liked boy in 1st grade. (I'm a boy) but I didn't know I was pan until 6th or 7th bc I didnt know it was an option. it's not my parents, fault, I knew gay existed, and I was an ally but I just didn't know that I could be gay. it was hard for me, and i didn't have social kedia or know where to do research when I started questioning. we need to expose children to these things at a young age, like as soon as they know about straight they also know about gay, because it can really help them so, so much.

But when businesses publicly show support for the LGBTQ+ people by setting their logos with symbols and designs from their communities and movements, Bengry said it is important to ask them about their motivations.
"This kind of visibility is only the very minimum we should expect, and we can use this initial support to start a conversation about how they can do more," the lecturer explained. "Do they donate to LGBTQ+ organizations, community groups and charities? Do they use their economic and political power to promote and support other LGBTQ+ causes and equality issues?"
"And, I think, most importantly we should ask questions about their own business practices and policies. How do they treat their own employees? Is it a safe environment for their LGBTQ+ staff? This is where they can have an immediate impact on people’s lives most directly, and where we must always push corporations to do more and do better," he noted.

My girlfriend and I were holding hands once and some old baby boomer said “that is completely inappropriate! Grow up. Women shouldn’t date women” so I called every person on my contacts list to come with the same gender to hold hands and link arms and s**t, (they didn’t even have to be dating, just friends, and of course if they didn’t want to, nobody was forcing them) some of my gay friends even kissed their boyfriends, and we had an entire a*s parade of gays (or people PRETENDING to be gay just to p**s off homophobes) like 38 people, and we tried to descreetly walk around where the annoying homophobic baby boomer was talking with her friends 😂

An ENTIRE generation? My Grandad had a very flamboyant gay friend. No one would talk to him until my Grandad got chatting to him. He made sure no one mocked him etc. This was in the 60s. I guess my point is don't judge an entire group of people if you don't want the same done to you. Also, a quick peck in public is fine but don't be gross and have make out sessions.

Common Law marriage only applies in certain situations when specific criteria are met and can be proven. The problem is it's not a common anymore since there's no way to keep track of it and paperwork, so from a paperwork perspective it doesn't show up as a marriage for things like health insurance and joint taxes

Yeah I am starting to refer to June as Pander Month, Feburary is Black Pander month. Corporations are just using the rainbow flags as a marketing tool to push their products and its obscene. Marketers using a person's gender identity or race to sell or promote their clients is wrong. We get bombarded enough by ads on a daily basis based on a conversation that our phones hear, to now be targeted based on whom we love, our pronouns or race.

The biblical line 'man shall not lie with a man' seems to have been translated from something that looks more like 'man shall not lie with a boy' which in turn comes from something which could have been translated as 'man shall not lie with a child'. I don't have a massive problem with people who believe the Bible is the word of God, but I really wish they would accept human translations and interpretation are what they actually read. Although some clearly will interpret the way they want. Try reading about Sodam and Gamorha. Even the king James version does not read anti gay. There is a bit which looks like men are trying to have sex with men, but god's anger is focused on the fact this is violent act of rape against foreigners whose children are also starved. To me the 2 biblical bits homophobes use to condemn gay people are actually bits where God says 'i hate pedophiles, xenophiles and rapists'. Just my opinion though.

Hasn't happened since COVID but I used to be stopped by people trying to recruit me to their religion. It became obviously clear that they knew very little, kept pointing at their translation of the Bible and repeating whatever they were taught. I pointed to the English side and told them that's not what it says in English. Then go down the history of the Bible, how it was repeatedly translated so if this one passage can have a completely different meaning in 2 living languages, how can you trust it? In addition, it completely contradicts itself in an earlier book of the bible... They give up real fast and I just hope I gave them something to think about and they will just try to be a good person

My friend came out as bi when we were in high school, and went overboard to reassure me that she *didn't* have a crush on me. To be honest, it was both reassuring (I didn't find her attractive that way, and I am resolutely straight), and kind of awkward (she stopped just short of saying I was completely unattractive to anyone!). I was more excited that she felt comfortable enough with our friendship to come out to me - it might even have damaged our friendship if she had a crush, because it would have remained unrequited.

I think people missgender to be polite and not intentionally be rude. For me growing up, it was a big insult to call someone the opposite gender of how their biology looked (like saying that you were a failure to be feminine/masculine enough). But now that more people are publically identifying as non-binary and transgender and wanting to be recognised beyond how biology dicates, it's creating a new type of etiquet. 'Being polite by not assuming a gender'. Which can be confusing to people who grew up with an opposing belief system on what counts as polite. (I'm not saying that it's right to misgender, just that not everyone does it to be hurtful)

Finnish language has no gendered pronouns. Everyone in official language is "hän" = he/she/they/whatever and in spoken language people often use the word "se" which means "it"

My 14 year old daughter is gay, and many of her friends identify as non-binary or trans. I address them by the pronouns/names of their choice, but have sadly been told by most of them to please call them by their assigned names around their parents :( I'm at least grateful they feel like my home is a safe place for them to be who they are.

I believe I also have a horse in this queer race (have a queer horse in this race?) as an ace in a same sex marrige, but I just fail to see how voicing concerns equals to hate speach now. "Homos will burn in Hell" has a distinctly different ring to it than "I worry about vulnerable young people and women getting harmed" to me. Saddens me that our long fight for acceptance somehow led us to canceling people for *any* reason. Wasn't that the very thing we aimed to end? :(

She might be a terf, and is probably anti-trans. She says she isn't a terf and she is pro trans but she is also not a trans ally as she has outdated beliefs and tends to lean against trans rights (partly out of fear, not that it makes it right). If you are far behind in the race, you can get the blue shell item. It flies to the person in first and hits them. The closer you are to being in first place, the smaller the chance you will get that item

i absolutely agree that this is bad if they're raising the price just because they can. however, i know of a few local businesses that make pride-themed items for june & they raise the price because they donate the extra cents (which quickly add up) to lgbtq charities. without the full story we can't tell whether they're taking advantage of pride month or being extra supportive.

I agree with other comments, but there may be possible answer that isn’t homophobic (but may seem so). When companies make stuff, they order materials to make it. The more materials they order, the cheaper due to volume discounts. When they make smaller runs of products, material order is smaller and less of a volume discount. Companies usually pass added costs on to consumers. IF (big if) that’s going on here, they should’ve cut the consumer cost (and taken a hit on profit) to make it the same cost…so the consumer optics don’t make it seem like the LGBTQ product is more expensive. IF that’s the case, it’s just a bad look.

Mostly business that caters to the trans community, usually takes advantage of the women. Many times they charge much more for "discretion". It hurts the women who need those services, because they don't have a lot of options. As an ally, I try and help how I can. (Closeted friends)

I really dislike all this hate towards JK Rowling. Literally nothing she's said is "transphobic", she simple stated that she is concerned for women's single-sex spaces as a sexual assault survivor. And there's this horrific torrent of death threats and bomb threats and even RAPE threats, doxxing and radical transgender activists posting her address online along with bomb-making kits. JK Rowling donated over HALF her money she made from Harry Potter to charity, didn't even make a big fuss out of it, and also stands up for LGB and Women's rights. And now, since she said she was concerned about the erasure of women and women's single-sex spaces, she's being bombarded with hate from so-called fans, named a "TERF" and a bigot. It's really awful.

There's a LOT of queer HP fanfic, if that's something you're into. I'd recommend shanastoryteller's fic on Ao3, called Survival is a Talent. She's still in middle of the sixth book, but she's nearing 500k words already, so it'll take you some time to read it all. She also does prompt fics on her tumblr -- someone suggests a topic and she writes a short fic about it. Some of them are up to 20-something parts, and many of them are queer.

Perhaps this is generational but, having worked for LGBTQ++ rights since the late 70's, fighting Anita Bryant, getting protections enshrined in city and state laws, Getting LGBTQ++ people elected and appointed to office, getting protections passed for those with aids/hiv (in the 80's) etc. It was difficult to get businesses to pay any attention to our existence and provide support, so I have real problems with so much hatred for companies that try to sell us stuff in June. We aren't forced to purchase anything, and they are showing bigots that they the business is NOT on their bigoted hatred filled side. There is so damn much hatred in the world, why hate those that are (while using us for profit) are actually helping to continue the "normalization" of our existence.

It's the one month out of the year that LGBTQ+ people feel just a little bit safer about being their true selves. I wish PRIDE month wasn't necessary and the community can feel 100% safe being true to themselves without consequences, but that's our unfortunate reality. Feeling safe is priceless and I'm glad we have at least this much. We still have a long way to go, but we are getting there. Don't Ask Don't Tell doesn't exist anymore, that means my bi cousin in the army can feel safe and keep her job. She's been in for 20+ years and married her wife shortly after DADT was voted out.

I don't get it. I've been friends with a gay guy since we were kids. I been friends with a lesbian since 1996. I have a gay niece, and a gay nephew inlaw. I've never looked at them any different than I do anyone else. I know some people don't like them for being gay, but why do they care who they sleep with? It doesn't affect them one way or the other. I don't get it.
