In my language Alex is a name only for boys as it originates from Alexander. There are no girls/women with the name Alex in my country.

In French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc, "goods/things" have grammatical gender and use masculine/feminine pronouns and adjectives accordingly. If you know any of those languages you will have clear how stupid is to fight the gramatical gender. It is not something related to people, is something linguistic!

In spanish too. Its absurd. If I am hanging out with three female friends and one male one it doesnt make any sense that I call them "my male friends". Sexist men in spain say that "its not a big deal" if we use the masculine as generalbut then if you use the femenine as general they throw a fit. I usually say the gender that has more people or if its unknown/equal whatever comes first to my mind.

@artok It is not epicene. Epicene is the name for the nouns that don't change according to gender. In Spanish we say, for example, "la burra" (the she-donkey) and "el burro" (the he-donkey). But some nouns just don't change, like "la ardilla" ( the squirrel); we use the same "feminine" word for both a he-squirrel and a she-squirrel. That is an epicene noun.
