I Photograph Senior Dogs To Preserve Their Memories In Honor Of My Own Dogs That Passed Away (30 Pics)
I've been taking animal pictures for about 15 years now, even longer if you count the days I used film cameras. I used to have three chihuahuas, but in 2015, I suddenly lost two of them due to illness and old age, three days apart. I was a bit of a wreck for a while after losing my beloved senior dogs.
Since I was already a pet photographer and had tons of cool photos of my own dogs, I decided to give joy to others, free of charge. I began a journey of photographing senior family pets and called it "Paw it Forward." I photographed many cute animals on their last day on earth.
I think it really helps people to be able to look at these photos and remember their precious furry friends. Recently, I have moved in a slightly new direction with my photoshoot ideas, but I still do senior portraits. They are the ones that mean the most to me!
Just a while ago, I adopted a senior chihuahua and still have my other old friend. This new guy has maybe three teeth and a heart murmur. He just saw a cardiologist and started a lifelong medication, but he is spunky and so so so sweet! He had already been in front of the camera and is truly a champ!
Below are just a few of the cute photos, most already have crossed over the rainbow bridge, but they live on in their photos!

So true! He was a beautiful dog.
Load More Replies...To give free photos for people is extremely generous, not much is free in life but the love from pets !!!
Beautiful, handsome, such a good boy, look at that face, i love him.
The fact that the person had like 0.000000000000000001 seconds to take the picture due to the dog wanted to play with it!
They crossed rainbow bridge
Load More Replies...I went to college to be a teacher, changed course, got a degree in graphic design, and along the way had to take several photography courses. I got a job as a commercial photographer fresh out of college and discovered wildlife photography was something that really interested me. I had Hercules and Chuie at the time when they were both very young and started taking photos of them with my film camera. I moved to digital and continued taking photos of them and thought I was an amazing pet photographer and made silly little business cards with my awesome graphic design degree! My photos and cards were not the greatest works of art but I was having fun and that's really all that mattered at the time. I discovered stock photography and worked in the industry as a reviewer for 10 years along with being an ongoing contributor. I was laid off from my review job and decided to open Unleashed Fur. The pandemic greatly affected my business but it's slowly picking back up as people settle in to this new normal. I have volunteered my photo services to the Idaho Humane Society for over a decade and do weekly photo sessions with the dogs there, to help get them out of the shelter and into homes faster.

Sorry for your loss! I love the name :)

I just want to cuddle her and give her belly rubs all day, so beautiful.
She was super tiny which made her even cuter!
Load More Replies...Ooohhh...This one reminds me so much of a couple of dogs I used to have. They went across the Rainbow Bridge a while ago, but I still smile when I think about them.
I lost two of my senior dogs, Hercules and Chuie, 3 days apart in 2015 and was devastated. I had been photographing them for years and was thankful I had so many photos of each one as they aged. I decided a good way to deal with my grief was to offer to photograph senior pets for others.

This dog made me think of the dog I've had for most of my life... He passes away about a week ago, he was 15,5 years old. He had the same kind of floppy ears as this dog, the same colours and almost the same sweet face.
Aww sorry for your loss! It's so hard losing a pet. I think Bonnie was about the same age too.
Load More Replies...I did not know Bonnie, but I love her. Look at those eyes. She had a life of love and snuggles. So sweet.
Looks like this picture could be from the other side of the Bridge. Exactly where a doggie loves to run. And she is.

I love pugs , my friend has several but i don't like the inherent problems they now have such as eyes and breathing problems, its so unfair on the little angels.
That smooshed face must be painful to have! Not to mention all the potential health problems.
The difficulty of pet photography depends on your current skillset and what you are trying to achieve with your final results. There are some basic tricks and techniques that I've learned along the way that help me get the photos I want for my clients. One of the hardest parts that people may not think about is working with older dogs who are deaf. You have to use a lot of hand waving while holding a camera.

Load More Replies...I have a few pets myself! Dainichi, a 6lb 14-year-old chihuahua who is super sweet and grouchy at the same time. I've had him since 2007 when I saw an ad, with no photo, for a free chihuahua puppy (the daughter went off to college). I took my dog Hercules with me to meet him and they hit it off immediately. I also have Emmett Doolittle, a 4lb 14-year-old chihuahua who I adopted from the Idaho Humane Society in 2018. He is very sweet and incredibly funny with his weird antics. His tongue hangs out because he has lost almost all of his teeth and it just adds to his cuteness.

He was only 6, he had epilepsy.

I'm doing the same as NWB...I'm starting to tear up thinking of these being taken on their last day. So sweet these photos are though.
Load More Replies...Is this beauty, a Grey Hound, I think they rescue them, after they no longer race, I have heard, they are a wonderful, family pet, upvote this sweetheart !!!
What inspires me the most is wanting to share a visual story of a moment. I'm also a wildlife photographer and I think that photos, as they say, are worth 1,000 words (or more). I like to capture the personality of a pet for my clients, so they can look at their photos and feel they embody the essence of their furry family member.

Poor dog is lying on stones, apart from that great pic and great grumpy face, he has moody resting face like me.

I would describe my style as somewhat thought out. I like to know the lighting and what will be in the background. I am open to suggestions and spontaneous photos but most of my work is with the pet looking at the camera, in a nice setting. If a client wants something like them running toward the camera or playing in the water I am willing and able to do that too. I like vibrant colors and wide-angle lenses to showcase the pet up close and personal. I love doing treat-catching photos because they're so animated and I can freeze that silly second in one frame.
Hercules - Crossed
He was my dog and came with the name. His papered name was Mr Boogerman! He was the main impetus to my pet photography career. He was also super sweet and for sure spunky! Also a weirdo.
Load More Replies...He was mine, and he was sooooooooo adorable!

I think she guards the fridge? Ha!
Load More Replies...If you want to be a photographer, here is some advice: first and foremost, learn how to use your camera. Read your manual, take a class, watch videos, just get off automatic mode and understand how ISO, shutter speed, and aperture all work together. Learn about white balance and color casts, learn how to post processes with the basic rules of photography, and then learn how to break those rules. Most of all, have fun! Find your happy place, find your niche, and don't compare yourself to everyone else.

He is looking at her how my dog looks at me, with obvious love, i just want to go home and hug my dog now but i'm at work on night shift, only 4 hours to go.
Yes, my dog Danny, would look at me, with love and understanding, he seemed to know what I was thinking, one thing I know, talking to your dog, ( or cat) is teaching them, they gradually will have, a great vocabulary, often before I finished a sentence, he knew what, I was going to say, I lost him many years ago, they broke the mold, he was the best, I still hurt, and still love him, more than words, can say, I adopted him, and all my pets !!!
Load More Replies...God, I love the unconditional love and trust in that pup's eyes. <3 Dogs are one of the only creatures that will love you more than they love themselves. And for no reason other than the pure sake of it.
I always call boots like those "pirate boots" because they look like, well, pirate boots! Adorable photo though!
I lost my sweet dachshund Hershey four years ago. This pic made me cry.

This old guy just crossed last month, I took his last day on earth photos also. He was one cool cat.
Load More Replies...This one wasn't taken on his last day. That's his normal face.

Yup, that's actually the brand name of a line of dog goggles. Although I don't know if this dog is wearing official Doggles - looks like he swiped a pair from his human.

a big horse running through the field...or maybe its just a big dog running through his yard. we'll never know!

You are bootiful! And a perfect tongue for lots of slobbery kisses.
I love every dog, but I have such a soft spot for boxers. It's been 6 years since my girl had to be put to sleep. I still have nightmares and so much guilt. It was the right thing to do, but I'll never forget her beautiful brown eyes looking up at me. I'd love to give her one last cuddle.
Highlighting cherished memories through photography goes beyond just capturing images. The Santa tradition enjoyed by the two friends, as depicted in the other engaging narrative, mirrors the spirit of dedication to long-term projects that bring joy to people over time.
If you're captivated by the enduring essence of this heartwarming custom, you might appreciate reading about their amusing yearly photos with Santa at Alderwood Mall, a testament to joyful continuity.
This broke my heart and made me happy at the same time. I have a senior cat and can't bear to even think of being without him but can see the absolute joy and love in these photos of pets who are truly loved.
This made me smile.. but also a bit sad whenever I read "Crossed". I know that's life... but... wish our pets could always be with us.
Each "crossed" is like a stab to the heart knowing, that they were there and are missed now. They all live too short ;( Always too short.
This made me cry. I lost my senior dog to cancer last month. Thank you for sharing these pictures.
Great pics all round Unleashed Fur. It made me very sad when they have "crossed" above the pic but i'm sure they all had a great life, xxx. Makes me think of all my dogs and cats i have lost over the years, always think of the good times but everyone of them that died took a piece of me with them, i will never forget any of them. RIP Fat Mike, Cody, Tea, Jess, Sam, Maurice, Handsome Pete, Rocky, Rambo, Tara and Rebel, love you all.
Senior doggos are so beautiful! I love when they're looking off into the distance. I wonder what they're thinking about - they look so wise! This is my senior baby, Bella, 10 years old! 34539901_1...e768bd.jpg
