This Is What Russia Really Looks Like: 30 Honest And Bizarre Photos By Aleksandr Petrosyan
Winston Churchill once said that "Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." Experiencing Russia is like experiencing magical realism—to the observer, everything seems as real as real can be, and at the same time, something's a bit odd, out of place, or straight up bizarre. Russia holds so many contrasting, vivid lives in it that it's no wonder why actually seeing them is so mesmerizing. And as one famous Russian vodka commercial says, "Russia can't be understood with the mind."
Aleksandr Petrosyan, the invisible hero of today's story, is the chronicler of these colorful people. He lives in Sankt Peterburg (Peter, as the locals call it), Russia's second-biggest city, and has accumulated quite an impressive archive of the city's unique people and situations. The photographer likes to capture as many different people as possible in a single frame, creating something that could somewhat represent the diverse Russian experience.

This man is the last surviving member of his WWII company... and he just found out before the parade. I can only guess the memories flooding in his mind right now....
I just really want to hug him even more now that I know why he's upset. D: (He also looks kind of like my dad.)

According to Snopes: " “It was taken at a Victory Parade on May 9, 2007, on the Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, Russia,” he revealed. He also explained why the veteran appears so upset in the photo and his hopes about tracking him down. “The veteran was upset that he was behind the column with other veterans and could not catch up with them,” he said. “Now I’m looking for this veteran. I hope that I will find him and find out his name.”"
Russian sacrifice defeated hitler. without russia, we would all be speaking german right now... all the other countries combined ,didn't do as much as russia. too bad it was ruled by scum like stalin afterwards.

If I remember right, he's the last surviving member from his company or platoon.
Load More Replies...Petrosyan got his first camera as a birthday gift when he was 12; he quit and came back a few times until he became a full-fledged professional in 2000. His biggest inspiration comes from the source of his pictures, Saint Petersburg itself, where he has lived his whole life and which he knows by heart. "This is my world," he says.
You can tell how joyous the dance is by the way both of her feet are off the ground. Such happiness!
siempre vas a tener esa amiga que te va a acompañar en tus locuras....
Morning beautiful morning. He's looks like he's showing respect to its glory with a slight bow.
And he doesn't fret that his photos won't be understood that well outside the local context. "Perception depends on many different factors," he says. "But if the picture is taken with a certain energy, the viewer will feel it, regardless of geography and culture." And indeed, they're well understood and appreciated by thousands of people across the world.

Grandpa has it right better progress than a walking stick if one can trust their own balance!
Sorry, but this makes me nervous that he’s not going to make it across before the cars run him over. Or the road’s so slick they’ll skid into him. I have to stop now.
The colors of those balloons is so gorgeous with the pale background. His smiling face reflects the infectious happiness from carrying those same balloons.
It’s Ilya Varlamov, very good and smart Russian blogger. Always happy to see him!
Ohgod. He's disguised in plainclothes, but you know that smile anywhere, that is absolutely a horrorclown
Neither one looks very happy. But! Does everyone smile when looking out the window? Of course not. Just wonderin'.
I don’t think he looks unhappy, he’s just not making a happy face for the picture.
Load More Replies...That must have been a beautiful house once. The detail of the window frame is just lovely.
I was hoping I wasn’t the only one who was looking at that beautiful woodwork!
Load More Replies...Both are wondering what the heck is that person doing taking a picture of their house.
This is a story. First you see the man and dog. He is protecting the dog and the dog is protecting him. See this hands and the fact the dog is in front. Both faces could be read a variety of ways. Next, notice the spray insulated foam applied without precision to keep out the cold juxtaposed with the beautifully ornate surround. Upon further inspection you see some pieces are missing, it's weather's and cracked, the window sill has rotted and completely fallen off. That replacement window is actually a hodgepodge of pieces painted poorly without even caring to scrape the excess paint off the glass. There are cobwebs in the corner and the foliage is dead. What is the story of this man and his dog? About the history of this house and how things came to be this way? All intentional I'm sure. This artist is amazing.
The subject is the man and dog, true but the window frame is absolutely gorgeous.
Good idea just save to my photos and opened it in my jigsaw app
Load More Replies...That's a LOT of paddle boarders for a cold day. Reminiscent of the skaters on the frozen waterways of Amsterdam.
He’s a keeper. A man who—-in public—-will help you get out of torture devices with 5 inch heels and into sneakers, just because he knows you’ll be more comfortable, is a man who wants the best for you because he really cares about you.
Modern day Cinderella! Love the expression of the woman in the back staring on.
She is thinking “c**p, that girl has the same sneakers I do. This is so embarrassing”
Load More Replies...My Russian colleague explained to me the prevalence of heels in Russian culture, so I'm glad to see it's balanced with some care for ones feet and knees as well!
"Notice, I am NOT looking up her dress! I am NOT looking up her dress!"
The shoes are gorgeous. You can only stand "gorgeous" (pain) for so long.
This is actually sweet. It goes against any stereotype of a Russian man.
I was going to say it looks like a painting! It's just beautiful!

Is that a feather boa around his neck or does he have a blue beard? Bet that's not all that's blue!
I hope she knows that's so many people look at her and see how brave she is
Yes they are and that needs to change! The more they are shown in Russia the faster people will get used to seeing them and the easier for them to have their rights met....maybe
Load More Replies...It's dangerous to do this in Russia because of awful cultural stereotypes and law. This woman may get beaten up or killed if it's something they do regularly. Very brave and courageous. I hope they remain safe.
Sadly, courageous beauties like her get beaten up all over the United States .
Load More Replies...Such an intriguing contrast of how one moment in time can mean different things for different people.
She doesn't look all that happy with the best cut crystal glass in her hand, while the bride and groom look joyous using paper disposable cups.
......aaaaand then she clouds cover the sun and all the shadows disappear, revealing a solitary hanging tree in am empty clearing.
Or maybe he made the perfect hat for his face...
Load More Replies...Exactly what I thought! I went to the comments to see if anyone else had thought it too lol
Load More Replies...Presumably, this is a wedding and they are about to release those birds which is not good. Do not release doves or pigeons at weddings or funerals! They often cannot find their way home and starve, the elements become too much for them, or they are eaten by a predator on the way. Right now I have a domestic white dove on my shoulder. I found her a few years ago struggling in the rain near my house and it is quite likely she was in that situation because someone released her at a wedding. I have also seen other dead white doves around. Please don't taint your happy occasion with an animal's death.
"I told you I could levitate, but did you believe me?? NOOOOOOOOO ......."
When women ignore you even when you brought your tank with you....
In America, dis is a tank. In mother Russia, we call this a moped.

Load More Replies...How is this a Russian thing kids do this everywhere they have lots of roofs.
naw. they take a picture to help with identification.
Load More Replies...Do you know what that sound is, Highness? Those are the Shrieking Eels — if you don't believe me, just wait. They always grow louder when they're about to feed on human flesh. If you swim back now, I promise, no harm will come to you. I doubt you will get such an offer from the Eels.
I REALLY wish there were captions to provide some context to these pictures.
I think this is Petersburg, near the Mosque, and I think it is some religious ceremony for muslim people
Load More Replies...It might be Friday prayers that must be done in congregation. Often mosques don't have enough space for so many Muslims.

I wonder who the poor kid is worried about...the new Mom or the new Dad?
Don't worry, little Dima: one day you'll be okay with all these changes.
Really? I'd think the plush one-piece would get waterlogged. But maybe the oversized head is concealing a scuba mask.
Load More Replies...looks like the house from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but bigger.

And, from the other pictures, there seem to be a lot like her.
Load More Replies...I'm not an expert on naval costumes, but perhaps this old-timey person is an actor from a historic ship moored nearby?
Load More Replies...The girl is getting arrested during an anti-government rally. She is holding a constitution of Russia in her hands.

Load More Replies...you live in a city where it has been raining for 300 years, you get used to rainbows))
Load More Replies...It's one of them rain coats that folds up into a little pouch that zips closed.... hence the zip. Obviously big in Russia & Ireland only :)
Load More Replies...Or the guy fell and the other guy is looking around for assistance.
Should be able to get help. Every other photo seems to have cops in it.
Load More Replies...For those confused: The shadow is a Lenin statue (that usually is pointing), pointing to a sign that says "Store", and the man is coming out with a bottle of booze. I believe the picture is a social commentary on what Russia has become since the fall of communism. Also, and this might just be me, but the shadow looks like it is doing the Nazi salute, which is also a social commentary on the oppressive fascist like regime.
Although, to be honest, alcohol was also a problem during the Communist regime
Load More Replies...Maybe that's her bathroom pass from class. I have seen those before.
Load More Replies...Probably a picture took inside one of those old, decaying, communist-era buildings, where common bathrooms were literally outside in the corridor. Guess these girls live in one of these infamous buildings, still (sadly) popular among the low income families. Plus don't think they're coming from far as they're in this wc without wearing shoes. Some sort of girl-talk moment between friendly neighbours, maybe ?
It was taken in London. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxMDFHNAvdT/
Load More Replies...A Russian once told me a joke about the mostly criminal noveau riche Russians of the 1990s, the so called New Russians: A New Russian walks into a jewelery store and asks for a big solid gold cross to hang around his neck. Everything the owner shows him is too small. So he gets him a giant golden crucifix that used to decorate a church in town. The New Russian takes a good look at thing and says: "Yeah, that's kind of a nice size. But take that half naked athlete off! He looks kind of gay."
I got the impression from reading Soviet literature that women doing any sort of typical masculine job (solider, doctor, etc.) was commonplace.
Load More Replies...Don't know why you got downvotes, but I agree with you. Unless you're a llama you have no reason to act like a llama. And in these times it's a crime to spit on someone.

Wrapping up the final logistics of the Turkish bath business meeting.
Was thinking the same thing. Heavy Metal Day. Wonder if they ever feel off balance.
Load More Replies...I think he might be with the guy next to the globe...
Load More Replies...Its partially cultural. Smiling for no reason gives the impression of being simple-minded. In preparation for the Sochi Olympics there had to be a huge training initiative to make workers appear more friendly to visitors.
Load More Replies...Yes. You do look very intense. However your lunch napkin is still around your neck. You lose a point for that.
This appears to be the prevailing expression. Not a lot to laugh about here? Just wonderin'.
Probably I'll get a downvote or what else, but seriously the problem is that in Russia life is so harsh and blank for too many people, that drugs seems the only relief. Especially for the young people, drugs and homelessness are very big issues.
Load More Replies...I see many old ladies (babushkas) that look exactly like this in my country as well... they've spent most of their lives under the communist regime, and now they feel like they don't fit into the modern world.
I suspect that crouched back is from some osteoporosis and untold years of hard work and misery. Sad.
Load More Replies...I think this is how they test for Covid 19. LOL
Load More Replies..."Hey honey, here is a nice spot for our wedding pictures! I'm going to sit down next those charming young drug dealers".
Its tradition for the happy couple to get pictures taken around the city. I've visited st Petersburg quite a few times and found it odd to begin with.
Load More Replies...Literally feel the sense of shame she has for being photographed. Would be the same for me, if I don't want to show where I live if it is such a crappy house. Just hope this isn't one of these "camp kitchens" of the communes hiding in Moscow's abandoned subway stations. Too many people are forced to live there, even if it sounds so unbelievable.
I'm not even gonna go there...Nope. *holding back my smart a*s comment*
Hopefully they aren't breathing in mold and asbestos. Possibly lead paint, too.
A seven foot tall ex-KGB man calling in a tip, with his constant companion. The dog looks a bit shady too. lol
A few hands over the heart could spell something patriotic happening perhaps?
more probably religious, they seems to be crossing themselves
Load More Replies...Well, I see they at least have public phones. They are in about the same condition ours were when the phone company gave up and pulled them all out. Now, if you don't have a cell phone in an emergency you're screwed.
Most disgusting tatoo ever. And that is the fantasy , he does feel comfortable to present to all.
And as one famous Russian vodka commercial says, "Russia can't be understood with the mind." - these are words by Tyutchev actually, a famous Russian classical poetist, not a vodka commercial...
Why do people assume someone in a candid photo who is not smiling has a terrible life? I for one know I don't walk around all day every day with a huge grin on my face. For all we know they could be perfectly happy. Thats racial profiling, making assumptions based on your own pre conceptions of a country or culture.
Really brilliant compositions and moments captured 😁would have liked more with better quality though
