Sadness mixed with humor in a perplexing, chaotic, and confusing way—that’s what the r/FunnyandSad online group over on Reddit is all about. An old-hand on the net, having been founded in November 2013, it has since then grown into a community of nearly 700k members.

The subreddit does exactly what it says on the tin and documents posts from all over the net that are funny and sad at the same time. It’s a melange of laughing through tears (or is that crying while you laugh?) that will show you that life is far more varied and nuanced than the black-and-white we’re used to seeing on the news and on social media.

Sadness is a very natural part of life and we ought to embrace it, instead of running away from it. After all, we can’t be happy-go-lucky all the time (I would know, I tried). And while being sad can even have certain benefits, like improving our memory and judgment, getting stuck in negative thinking patterns and endless loops of sadness isn’t healthy for our mental wellbeing.

I had a quick chat with an expert in the field of psychology about how to identify what these negative thinking patterns look like and how focusing just on our failures, having black or white thinking, and holding ourselves accountable for everything that goes wrong all harm our mental health.

I once had a supervisor admit to me that I was paid less, even though I did a better job, than the man I replaced. He said our bosses believed men should be paid more because they have families to support. (The man I replaced was single, by the way.)

Yep! Female engineer here. Didn't get a job because I wasn't suited to work on a mine site (single-parent, female). I was contracted to train the guy how got this job (parent, not single). Apparently they went through a heap of privileged white males and decided I was actually the best candidate. Desperately tried to contact me through LinkedIn, HR, recruitment agencies, several colleagues to offer me work. Said no several times, eventually said never. At some point working for misogynists isn't possible at any price

Emma Morton, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, told Bored Panda that, for example, what we tend to focus on more, our successes or our failures, can influence our long-term mental health. For instance, hyper-concentrating on all the things that go wrong or could potentially go wrong can trap us in a perpetual loop of self-criticism and anxiety.

This, in turn, can lead to feelings of very low self-esteem and even depression which, in turn, can make us unwilling to ask for help and support even though we might desperately need both. However, there are other ways how we can end up trapped in negative thinking patterns, too.

438,000 I presume is the number in the US. Worldwide there are approx 153 MILLION orphans according to UNICEF. They claim to be pro-lifers but that is a complete lie. They are pro-birthers and anti-women, not pro-lifers. As long as the unwanted foetus is born they can go to sleep happy even knowing that there are high chances the woman and child would suffer for the rest of their lives. Over 300,000 women die during pregnancy and child birth annually and 5 million more women suffering long term effects including disabilities. Over 7 million women and girls suffer complications from unsafe abortions annually, including death. Pro-lifers, pfft an absolute joke.

Absolutely spot on! My lovely husband is the best (and loves doing it) at arguing with these people. The first thing he asks is "how many children have you adopted?" I think he has a valid point. If these "pro-life" people are going to argue against abortion, then they damn well should be taking these children into their homes rather putting them in foster care. And you're right, there's no pro-life going on here. They are anti-abortion and don't deserve the title of pro-life. Not when they also deny the parents of children food stamps and any other type of assistance.

"Fun fact" most of them offers a lot of support for young girls in an "unfortunate situation" right until the point where she cannot reverse the decision anymore, and then leave her alone from there. Having the baby isn't the hardest part, it is what comes after that. It is despicable and only illustrate how false and selfish their "love" of the human life is, and how little they in reality care.

The best way to avoid the issue of abortion all together is to educate and give people (yes male and female) access to pregnancy prevention methods. Many (not all) unwanted pregnancies are caused by people who; a) are unable to access protection, b) do not know how to use protection properly, c) are unaware of the various prevention methods available for men and women. If steps were taken to spread awareness and accessibility, unwanted pregnancies everywhere could potentially be decreased significantly. Generally speaking I think there are too many people on the planet, if you want lots of kids adopt them!

This is ridiculous to be honest. The two don't go hand in hand. Somebody who is pro-life can still care about and value existing life. Im really sick of this world and everybodys petulant squabbling. I am pro-choice to a degree because its an important component to liberty and free will. I also am pro-life because I value life and I'm not psychopath. I don't need to justify either stance because both are reasonable and the sooner we come to gracefully accept that, the better. Our God complex is out of control and I'm sick of the intolerance from both 'sides'.

Well, first of all you need to go after Congress and the FDA. The reason there are only three suppliers of insulin is because Congress reclassified insulin not as a GENERIC drug, thus available to all drug makers to sell, BUT BECAUSE CONGRESS RECLASSIFIED IT AS A BIOLOGIC drug. That meant that ANY drug company who wanted to produce insulin HAD TO GO THROUGH TESTING AGAIN. That meant that all these drug companies had to spend the equivalent of a BILLION dollars to RETEST AND RE-CERTIFY a drug that they had been selling for years. They couldn't afford it so they quit making it. Government bureaucrats do more damage than a century of non-stop hurricanes.

Congress did not classify insulin as biologic drug, it IS a biologic drug. Biologics is a term for drugs that are produced by living organisms, usually cell cultures (as opposed to chemical drugs that can synthetized by chemical reaction in a lab). That's why most pharmaceutical companies can't produce it, it's literally completely different technology. Also, it's a biologic everywhere, yet the US is the only developed country when it's unaffordable. I think it's because the other governments regulate drug prices for the sake of their citizens, while in the US, free market is worshiped as a god, regardless the consequences it has for people.

Despicable isn’t it? If I were you I would buy an apartment. That’s the best choice if the bank denies your house loan. Anything is better than throwing money in the garbage because that’s what paying rent actually is. At least If you buy an apartment, you would still get your money back if you sell it.

To be fair, the mortage alone does not pay for the home, but there are additional costs. If you loose your job, you could move if you live in a flat; if you need to pay for the mortage, you have a problem. Thus, the problem here is not the bank, it is an inflated house market!

I think that if you can prove that you have been paying 1k a month consistently for 5 years a bank should be able to take that as proof that you can pay 1k a month for a mortgage. The fact that someone earns 50k a year does not mean that they will responsibly pay their mortgage. But having a consistent payment history shows responsibility towards paying.

Only thing about mortgages they are more than the loan- its property taxes, insurance, & sometimes HOA & PMI insurance. Plus repairs that can be costly- roofs, plumbing etc. PMI is the biggest scam- my apartment was valued at over 100k but I only paid 50k as I bought from family member. I took mortgage out for 47k so since I didn’t put down 20% I still had to pay the PMI insurance even though the value of the property was WAY more than the mortgage loan. PMI is protect the bank from loosing money so if the home is worth more than mortgage they win if you default plus they get all the money you have already paid. It’s f****d up as it only gives the bank security even though you pay for it.

Depends in which place. NYC teachers start at 57K a year and max out in 23 years at 115k with eligible for retirement at 25 years. DSNY starts at 48K maxes out at 105k (unless you move into management, and switch from trucks to a desk), and have to wait till 30 years to retire. On the other hand they get a lot of money from the double overtime they get paid for snow shoveling. A really bad snowy winter can net them 20k extra, which is why they pray for snow.

What??!! There is a “black dog” phenomenon - in shelters, etc., they are the least popular for some reason. My black lab mix Zander was my boy - a brother to his human siblings. He passed a few years ago, I still miss him. People ought to know that Black, Yellow and Chocolate labs are exactly the same save fur color (not talking about other lab types which are darn close). You can have all three colors in a litter. Color doesn’t make on LR better than a litter mate because of fur color. Ignorance is heartbreaking and stupid. AKC standard views Labrador Retriever breed as one breed that can have the three basic coat colors. Please adopt a black rescue - Cat or dog. That woman might seek damages. Ugh.

I had a lovely black lab, sweet as could be. People were afraid of her. I also had a yellow lab, and everyone would want to pet him. I had to stop people. He was unpredictable, and a little ornery. What ridiculous assumptions to put on dogs.

That they dont pay federal taxes on. Tax money that could have been used to get you more than two lousy stimulus checks. Or to forgive some of your student loans. Or to fix some busted city streets. Or to provide students with laptops to learn from home. Its actually not "their" money. They get kickbacks from their high ranking governement friends in exchange for keeping them in office. Imagine the millions that would have been poured into our society if these 1%ers were actually honest, ethical citizens.

As such, having unrealistic expectations of what we’re capable of and being unreasonably demanding of ourselves can lead to “feelings of depression and worthlessness” that in turn “make it harder to reach out for help.” So while it’s perfectly fine to feel sadness, we all need to know when to ask for a helping hand if we find ourselves constantly stuck with only negative thoughts.

Not true at all. Jesus did not know whom among his disciples would betray him until it was close to the time of his death. Judas Iscariot was initially a good person. He had a close, personal relationship with God. However, he allowed greed to become his "god" and let "Riches" move him to begin stealing from the money box and ultimately betray Jesus for the price of a slave (30 pieces of silver). Later, his guilt, instead of moving him to beg Jehovah God for forgiveness, he committed suicide; sealing his destiny of everlasting death. He will never be resurrected either in heaven or on earth.

It's even more ironic that people complain about social medicine because "I pay my taxes and someone I don't know will benefit from it" but these same people will gladly hand money over to someone they don't know with no way to verify the person receiving the money is telling the truth.

Was divorcing that difficult? These people think they're funny and DGAF but they ignore how much they'd win if they just thought differently. Better divorced than forced to be deaf for 20 years.

To a lot of people, keeping the housekeeper on and not having to give her half of everything makes them stay married. It's just sad. They're not staying together for the kids at their age, only convenience and neither of them can be happy.

Not a millennial but this is correct The greatest generation came back from the war and gave us the GI Bill where society paid your tuition so it was kept at a reasonable cost. The boomers dropped government support and made student loans unforgivable debt so college became a profit industry that mainly serve the bankers. Minimum wage has gone up 105% since I paid my way through college while tuition has gone up 612% at my school . Median home prices increased 121% nationwide since 1960, but median household income only increased 29% so its 4 times harder to save up a down payment. Only 16 of the US largest 100 cities have a median home price at or lower the 2.6 income to mortgage ratio we are supposed to follow. Social Security Administration has stated it may go bankrupt by 2035 so anyone under 52 may never see a dime. And melt the icecaps part - the northern passage opened under the boomers watch for the first time in 2.6 million years.

Newspapers love taking the worst-case scenario from studies and saying "CLIMATE SCIENTISTS SAY WE HAVE 10 YEARS UNTIL CLIMATE APOCALYPSE!" and the scientists whisper "that's not what we said at all" but the damage to public confidence about dramatic climate claims is already done. See Nene's comments below.

Climate change was taught at my school 30+ years ago. It is still being taught today. Most people understand it, have been brought up with it. So why aren't we fixing it? ExxonMobil spent £32m lobbying against climate change policies in the US recently. A young protester with high morals can't compete with that. The nation of China is responsible for 14% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Terrible, they say. Where is your phone, tablet or PC manufactured? Or your coffee machine? Or your TV? Made in China. There is the problem. You don't want to make the sacrifice. Nobody does. And in the meantime we are all here, looking at each other and saying 'Yes, I understand, yes, it needs to stop' without ever doing a single thing about it. Other than virtue-signalling in online forums, like me, on my Chinese keyboard.

Further back than that. My older brother was doing a post-Doc at Scripps Oceanographic Institute back in the 1970’s as the scientists there were first starting to recognize what was happening. So that initial realization was literally a half-century ago.

I think it's a very important job. Olympic swimmers are pushing their bodies to the limits and can have a heart attack or collapse by exhaustion. Also, the lifeguards are not there exclusively for the swimmers. I remember many years ago an Olympic diver hit his head while jumping. He remained conscious but hitting your head while diving can be very dangerous.

I worked at a bar and a group of men in suits ordered a drinks and wanted to run a tab. I said I need a credit card for a that and the guy looked at me funny, turned to one guy, got the CC and when I went to run it and saw the name I realized it was the Mayor. He was a known a$$ and a drunk so when I came back and the guy said do you know who that is? I said yeah, all the more reason to get the card! The guy stifled a laugh.

I liked the airline check in when this man pushed to the front of the queue and was asked to go back and take his place in the line, he said to the airline girl 'do you know who I am'? without a pause, she picked up the microphone intercom and said ' at check in 3, does anyone know this man as he doesnt know who he is', well done her.

There are quite a few jobs where people cannot physically continue to do the jobs they used to do, ex. bricklaying, fire-fighting, emergency responding and the like... For those I think a phased-in retirement is the best option with a mentor/trainee phase as part of that so the experienced older folks can teach the less-experienced younger folks.

Yeah, the argument being we tend to live older nowadays but living longer doesn't mean living longer in good health!! We, french people, are critized a lot for going on strikes all the time but what I don't understand is how everyone else is NOT on strike all the time considering the employment conditions around the world... And the worst part is that governements are always showing other countries as examples "in this country they retire at 68, in that country they don't even have a public retirement plan" well, I'm very sad for them and we should not take them as models. I'm just saying...

The world population grows by roughly 83 million people each year or 1.1%. We're at 7.8 billion people right now. We *need* to curb population growth if we're going to survive. Critical mass will hit sooner rather than later if we keep up the current pace. Many countries need a major campaign of birth control and education.

I don't understand, please explain? 'Replacement level' is jsut a technical term that describes the rate of births required to maintain a steady population. Unless you're suggesting that nobody should ever die, which is the only way that the replacement number becomes zero, then this number automatically exists.

Agree 100%! I have a strange obsession with the Himalaya and the effects of adventure tourism. It’s appalling what humans have done to that area, not just in terms of environmental impact but also the exploitation of the local populations.

Someone published an article about another woman who did it right: she had experience climbing mountains; when she had trouble near the top of Mount Everest, she turned back and rested; after resting, she joined another group that was taking a less crowded route. It doesn't guarantee success or even survival, but she put luck on her side and made it to the top on her second try. Afterwards, she said she wanted to return to the Himalayas and climb other mountains.

YouTube has saved my butt a squillion times. From eggs or pepper into the radiator for a blown head gasket to using pipe clamps and baked beans cans to fix a busted exhaust pipe. I try to problem solve everything with my car cause I'ma teeny tiny older woman in a huge old everything goes-wrong with-lately-truck, and mechanics really take the piss on us little chicks. I've saved heaps by being able to delay the inevitable. And yeah, pepper held for 6 months!

Tip: most check engine light issues aren't that big of an issue. Take the car to a auto parts shop and they'll read the check engine code for free. Then google it. If the car doesn't sound or act weird, it's probably something you can ignore. Just do the google.

Once you have the code and you know it's something like the O2 (oxygen) sensor, for example, then you google your car make and model and O2 sensor and there will be tons of information on whether or not you can just live with it, and you might find youtube videos that show you how to fix it yourself.

"We". There are so many disingenuous politicians that we have been tricked into supporting. At this point, I need one to be like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, AOC, etc., in order to think they might be willing to go against the 1% who rule us. The duopoly is corporatist through & through. If we want actual pro-social reform, we need to stop expecting the duopoly parties to provide it. Of course, Trump's biggest win for the DNC was in ensuring more hate is aimed at Green Party voters than ever before. I have even given up being registered independent because of the frelling closed primaries in PA. When I voted for Biden, I knew it was merely to apply some triage to a country that's literally bleeding out because of a madman in the highest office of the nation, supported by an insane cult of voters and congresscritters. The DNC held a gun to our heads ("Biden or Trump"), so that was the end of thinking we have any choices to make to stop this BS.

I considered a career in law. It took me all of one hour's worth of research to learn it's one of the most expensive educations in America, and many lawyers never land work. Before investing or borrowing toward an expensive education, do a little homework to see if you might actually make a living at your chosen field. I remember reading about a couple who mortgaged their house to pay for their daughter's ivy league education to become a social worker.

This is such a crime against not only the students (hurt the most) but the country and economy in general. People are not/can not afford educations that would benefit and contribute, folks can’t buy homes or afford to have kids - that hurts the health of communities - this is a fairly new phenomenon, I believe, save for the exclusive colleges that have always used tuition costs and legacy favors ($) so the rich (sometimes dumb as rocks) get in while many others don’t. There are exceptions, but… It’s a scam. No student should have to go into massive debt for an education that contributes to society.

My kids are millennials, now in thier late twenties and early thirties. Both have jobs, shipwright labourer and disability support worker. One owns a house, two cars boat, 3 kids and save hard to get the small stuff. My boy has many boats and sails professionally. Many of thier friends own houses and new cars, and all the trimmings. All are blue collar workers. I am middle X gen and we had shitty wages, trade qualified mechanic $11 an hour. 3 kids, rented. Only rich people got to buy a house. No blue collars. Millennials are so much better if here in Australia than any other gen before them. They just have more platforms than the local letters section in the newspaper to complain about to.

Rent has doubled in the last 30 years. Wages have tripled. Ability to get a loan is 1000 fold easier. On the other hand, addictions have risen massively, poker machines are EVERYWHERE, and the ability to gamble online and buy anything and everything 24/7. Not to mention coffee addiction and smashed avo desire and all the brunch trimmings that over 1 year could have been your house deposit. All those factors make it difficult for millennials to get into the market too.

My single beet was a little bigger, but I planted Aton of veggies - got sick and all it takes is one day of neglect for everything to die in AZ summer temps (I’m new at this). I’m surprised your little tomato turned red so soon! Don’t they stay green in early growth? But what do I know - I get oddball things in my “garden” regularly. Going to try a fall planting this year. Your tomato is adorable. Keep trying!

I picked the saddest little pile of peas out of my garden last night, went to the trouble of shelling them, actually bothered to boil water to cook them, put the tiny pea pile on a plate next to the toaster oven while my piece of fish finished cooking, left the room and my weird ass cat ate them. Thanks a lot Pretzel. I hope they were good.

I love my cast iron skillet that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. It took 75 years of seasoning to perfect, and I will cut anybody who dares come at it with dish soap!

A properly seasoned cast iron skillet can get washed with zero ill effect. Use flaxseed oil and a BBQ grill to season it, and you can send that baby through a dishwasher on heavy duty with detergent and rinse agent and it won't touch the seasoning. I speak from experience working years in foodservice and having my own cast iron pans at home.

I feel like this should be in the top 3. As a repeat violent crime (UNCONNECTED crimes) survivor, with zero biological family (for health), crippling agoraphobia and lifelong social anxiety... I communicate mainly through text messages. To be honest: the seemingly trivial daily interactions with the ultimately transient people I wanted to keep as surrogate family are a vacuum---I more impacted by those incremental losses, more damaged, than I ever have been by through abuse or crime. I think having a carefully anonymous social presence and no one to interact with on a regular basis is more destructive to a soul than potentially any other form of loss or violation. It quiet literally unmakes a person. It makes suicide very, very appealing and waking/getting up on some days becomes absolutely impossible. THIS IS NOT meant as a pity party... Maybe a grammatically incorrect PSA? Text the meme to the person you drifted from for no decisive reason. It could change their immediate future path or intentions.

That looks luxurious to me considering the flights I’ve been on! My body is nearly broken from all those cross country flights every couple of months, sleeping in the airport, wash, rinse, repeat for years. Well, that’s because my ex required me to escort my pre-teen and teen daughters on every flight so I had to fly them out, sleeping the airport and fly myself back the next morning - 7 hour flights each way. I’m tall with tailbone pain and those seats were excruciating.

You would not be able to afford what that couple paid for their flight. They are getting the equivalent of a first class experience because they paid more than first class pays nowadays. Tickets cost up to 10x as much as they do today, and they took longer. Much longer. A discounted round trip Greyhound Ticket NYC-San Francisco cost $89.65 in 1950. It today's money it would be around $980 in today's money. A cheap round trip NYC-San Francisco by airplane can cost less than half of that. So we are paying HALF of what those people would have paid for a bus ticket which would have taken three days, so why are people whining that they are, essentially, spending only 4 hours in a bus-like seat? Talk about whiny entitlement!

At the risk of repeating myself from the last time this appeared on a BP post - the teachers weren't *lying*. Teachers in the 90s didnt have crystal balls to predict the future. A Nokia 3200 cost over £750 in 1993, which didnt exactly suggest they would be affordable to everyone (and this was a brick phone that didnt even have a calculator function). Knock it off with saying 90s teachers should've foreseen the iPhone.

90s kid here, I had a calculator on my f*****g watch, and solar powered calculators the size of a business card were given away at the bank. Don't act like teachers were clueless.

I was never worried about this. I just made a point to avoid jobs that require extensive use of math.

God damn this was the leading cause of my anxiety for ages! Couldn't learn my times tables despite trying very hard. "You're gonna fail high school without knowing your times tables!" Pscht then I get to first year of high school and calculators were mandatory instead of forbidden. Dammit teachers

True, but you can google it and find the answer to the equation at least.

I never use a calculator. Never have, EXCEPT to check long lists [?] of figures. I do not trust that a machine will never make a mistake because ALL MACHINES are made by and programmed by humans.

I’ve actually never worn yoga pants to yoga. I always wear stretchy shorts because it gets warm in there.
