While we listen to the humming silence, I have to admit that in the past week, I scribbled out a single post-it note with my groceries list. The fact is obvious: typing has pretty much replaced the good, old and beautiful art of handwriting. (I am not looking at you, doctors!)
Cursive writing has become a skill on its own. Some states, such as Indiana, have decided to go on teaching it in school. Others claim that cursive should be cherished like any other great tradition whose disappearance would be a cultural tragedy.

Looking at this makes me wonder how long it takes to learn this and be able to write so pretty within an acceptable time frame. My handwriting is terrible, maybe I should practice more.
I used to do this kind of thing in high school. If I saw someone's handwriting that I liked, I'd spend hours copying and perfecting their penmanship. It took years for me to decide on my own handwriting and even now it's got a few little quirks I picked up from others all those years ago!

I used to have good writing, cursive and printing, but injuries, arthritis and surgery have really changed that. I miss it.
My dad used to study psychology in Slovakia back then. One of his Seminars was graphology. So he once explained the tendencies. This one would be fun for him to read.

The physical brain and hand connection is important for memory. As a newspaper reporter I always had wrote my notes which helped me remember more when I then wrote the story. I’ve always practiced my handwriting and studied different writing styles. These are all wonderful works of art.

To find out more about the art of handwriting and all the powers behind this undeservedly forgotten skill, we spoke with Lauren Mooney Bear, the chairperson for the “Campaign For Cursive” and the “Cursive is Cool Contest” for kids grades 1-8. “Campaign For Cursive” is part of the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation (AHAF). Lauren has been a handwriting analyst and graphologist since 1985.
If you’re wondering whether you have a talent for handwriting or not, Lauren said that anyone’s capable of it. “Handwriting, cursive writing and even calligraphy can be learned by anyone and improved upon with practice. There is an endless variety of personalities and the form of one's writing will ultimately reflect the personality and thinking processes of the individual writer.” Lauren added that calligraphy is a highly stylized form of written communication, yet it will still yield some personality traits.

Moreover, writing styles can be developed through practice. Lauren shared some tips on how to do that: “Choose a simple 'copybook' or style you wish to adopt. Practice needn't be arduous or painful. With only a short period daily, a person will master a good script in no time. Using colored pencils really helps to embed the cursive movements into the memory.”
She continued: “We also suggest playing light classical music during practice to help relaxation and improve rhythm and writing fluidity. One of the fun programs, for adults and youth, is called CursiveLogic (links below), another one is New American Cursive.”

Incredibly, even complex personality and behavior traits can be seen in the writing, like “manipulative traits, honesty, sense of humor, sarcasm. Handwriting can show math or artistic aptitudes.” Lauren also said that an expert can even see if a couple might be compatible or if one is well suited for a particular type of employment. “Of course, the writing must be seen as a whole, one trait alone means nothing,” she added.
When asked whether handwriting is being pushed away by typing, Lauren confirmed that many of our youth are not being taught or are overwhelmed by the use of technology. “However, it is good to know that at present, 25 states have mandates that some sort of cursive/handwriting be taught in schools. Scientific research has shown that the students who learn cursive at a younger age do far better in secondary schools and in universities and tend to excel in math, science and the arts,” she added.

If it makes you feel better, in almost five years of grading the notebooks in MIT physics, I saw some good handwriting but nothing on this level. These are truly exemplary, and the ones that are just "normal" handwriting (like the lab books and teacher notes) are definitely something.

I am a hospice nurse who used to sell my notes to classmates in nursing school. I am able to write quickly and beautifully, which is hard to say for me. Now, my love of handwriting is evident in my poetry and hours of practicing hand lettering. The example, which was didn’t make the list, of Turkish handwriting hit home. I’m half Turkish and am completely in love with the language. This post is one of ultimate favorites!
Although I won the General Proficiency Award for the presentation of my work in grade 8, these posts give me both pen and penmanship envy... :P
I have to handle complaint letters at work. It's interesting what kind of amazing hand writing everday people sometimes had.
Well I am dumping my pen and sticking to typing, my handwriting looks like a spider dropped in ink and walked across the page.
As an amateur author who's writing a draft by hand (though in a very average handwriting); this makes me feel so peaceful and happy, I can't even explain it!
Just out of curiosity, why are you choosing to write by hand. I am working on my second book and would never choose to do it by hand because I am constantly rearranging text and the book is already 300+ pages. For me it would be too unwieldy if it wasn't on a computer. Just wondering what benefits you see from doing it differently

I learned cursive in the 3rd grade. I've used it all my life. Remember the original alphabet cards above the blackboard? I can still write them! Kids today aren't allowed to write in cursive in most schools. You've called manunscript (printing) "handwriting." To me, handwriting will always be cursive!

I used to work in a sign shop, and I was very surprised when vinyl cutting machines replaced the skilled hands.
Same as printing presses replaced illustrated manuscript and printers replaced presses (not completely in either case, but enough). Even if the new thing isn't better, if it's faster it's going to take over.

I was taught Cursive many, many years ago. Much of what I have seen they called hand lettering or printing back then. My hand Lettering on technical drawings matched many!
I have always loved penmanship. Being left handed has its challenges. We write backwards and upside down. We smear what is just written when using good ink. We cover the clues in crossword. Still, love it tho. My writing has become so much messier because I do less and my thoughts are not so focused on the look of the thing anymore.
Can we learn to write this well? I'm genuinely asking because if we can learn how to write in the 1st place. Is it possible to learn how to write even better? Practicing it over and over until you get better.
I have quite good handwriting but this makes me want to practice and improve. I found myself reading a lot of the longer examples because the writing was so beautiful it drew me in.
Outstanding! Kudos to all the artists. I would love to see a lot more of these. Handwriting isn't dead, as was predicted by computer naysayers.
I love calligraphy. I'm out of practice since my right hand & wrist are compromised, but there's nothing more satisfying than writing something beautifully & clearly. My printing was so nice in elementary school the nuns would ask me to address envelopes for them. I have a tremor now that affects my handwriting, but working through it. I think they should teach cursive again in school- it's pathetic grown adults print everything, including their signature. It's a nice skill to have.
Most of these are fascinating, I adore these qualities in humans, it reveals how organised and focused they are. I must admit I envy a bit :)
My handwriting is hardly legible… it looks like a crab stepped in a pile of graphite and walked across my paper… these are super cool!
My grandfather once told me that my writing looked as if I had drawn it! I Love journals, papers, pens, markers, crayons...anything that writes I guess! These folks have such beautifully insane talent! I haven't written in my journal in forever, I think I'm afraid of what I'll write and what my writing will look like! I usually write in a forward slant cursive, however, when I'm not feeling well or I'm depressed I write with a back slant cursive or print that doesn't look like me!!!
So did you hear about the doctors that went out of strike? They had to call in pharmacists to be able to read their strike signs! "Ba-domp-domp-Ching"
My handwriting is so bad and I'm ashamed of it and cannot fix it. I even tried adult handwriting books to try to correct it.
One of the great joys of my long career drawing maps was to be able to look at the gorgeous maps created by the earliest surveyors in my state. The drawings were so meticulous, the handwriting so beautiful that it was a joy to behold. Even more so, because these men (they were all men back then) were working by firelight, in swamps so mosquito infested that mules died from suffocation, the insects were so thick.
