They pretend to have triple-digit IQs, glasses thicker than Velma’s from Scooby-Doo, and they love flaunting their stuff—bragging about their big brains, of course! They’re the obnoxious wannabe eggheads that make the internet insufferable with their Thesaurus vernacular and incessant desire to prove that their intellectual capacity for reasoning (i.e. ability to sound smarter) is bigger than yours or mine. Combined.

The ‘I Am Very Smart’ Reddit community is chock-full of quality posts poking fun at people who think they have high IQs (but actually just have massive egos). And with a following of 1.5 million, you can bet that folks are interested in seeing these ‘mighty minds’ make utter fools of themselves.

Check out some of the best posts from the community below, upvote your fave pics, and be sure to follow their subreddit if you like their content. Bored Panda has written about the intellectually eloquent r/IAmVerySmart subreddit before, so when you’re done with this list, have a scroll through our earlier post which can be found right over here.

Bored Panda wanted to learn more about the r/IAmVerySmart community, so we reached out to their moderator team and members. They're a vocal and friendly group and they told us all about what their subreddit stands for, how it changed over the years, why people want to try to appear 'VerySmart(TM),' as well as how best to deal with anyone who's been hitting the Thesaurus way, way too hard.

You could argue that the monster was called Adam, as that’s what he refers to himself as in the book.

Obligatory "No, the monster is called Victor" as the doctor is truly a monster and the "monster" is just unfortunate.

You think that’s bad? I once got into a heated discussion with my 60+ year old father because he was adamant dinosaurs were not animals. I had to explain to him that dinosaurs were reptiles and reptiles are animals. Apparently, reptiles, insects, and fish are not animals either. Only mammals, rodents, marsupials, apes, and birds are animals. He had the audacity to say maybe if I had finished high school, I would know that. 🖕🏻Dad. Maybe you should learn how to use Goggle.

They often don't fact check because it never occurred to them there was any doubt. Some of the time, that is arrogance, but my mother grew up thinking a quarter of an hour was 25 minutes. It was logical to her, so she didn't question it until into adulthood.

The 'I Am Very Smart' community was founded way back in 2013 and it's one of the longest-existing veterans on Reddit. The moderators, even though they encourage poking fun at people who try to sound smart too hard, nonetheless don't tolerate anyone sharing any identifying information. The content's supposed to be about fun while indirectly celebrating actual critical thinking and intellectualism.

Moderator Thumbs0fDestiny was very open about the fact that the main draw of the 'I Am Very Smart' community is revealing someone else's blunder when, instead, people should be humble and succinct. In other words, the sub's popularity comes from one of the most human things ever, the joy that we get from seeing someone else fail or get humiliated, called schadenfreude.

Ok but this is the second time the number 136 has shown up, right? Which is not bad, probability-wise. But still. So I checked and surprise! 136 is, provided you don't deal with decimals, 1 point into the top 1%. And here's the thing: I know for a fact you can go to certain psychologists for raised scores. I know there are people who practice the tests in order to gain an edge- or people who gain the actual tests and memorize them. Now, considering that single points mean a lot at the edges of the scale, but you can essentially have your number boosted by 10, 20 points with no worries... mull that over. I get that this is a conspiracy sounding post, but it does happen, even if it's not what happened in these specific cases.

OK, I do not get people who go around boasting about their IQ as if it somehow proves their point. If you have a high IQ, good for you, but it only measures a certain type of 'intelligence'. There are many other kinds of intelligence that aren't so easily measured. Moreover, a person with high IQ might be able to argue their opinion clearly but it doesn't mean they're right. They're technically more intelligent than average, but you still have to learn basic information. It's so dumb when people have an idea and, without doing any research, insist that they're right just because they can attach a number to it, which they could easily be lying about. Also, narcissists like this give all intelligent people a very bad reputation

I knew a guy who told me (in all earnestness) that he made sure to let everyone know on his first day at the new job after graduating with his PhD that he didn't think less of those who only had a master's degree. I believe that there are people like this - even if this one in particular is fabricated.

Meanwhile, community member OneGoodRib (loving these user names, by the way), point-blank said that people love laughing at others and there's less guilt if we all poke fun at the "chumheads" who are the targets of the subreddit. "I don’t feel nearly as bad about having a laugh about someone being pretentious as I do about laughing at, say, people who are dressed really poorly in public."

In OneGoodRib's opinion, some people are "super insecure" about their intelligence and believe that being smart is the most important thing in the world. That's why they're willing to sacrifice anything just to make others believe their IQ's hitting Super Saiyan power levels (even if it backfires... magnificently). "It’s okay that they don’t have friends, or talents, or accomplishments, as long as they just keep telling people they’re super smart. And of course some humans are just smug [jerks], it just happens that the people in this sub are smug about being smart rather than smug about motorcycles or veganism."

Nobody's a stranger to not wanting to sound like a fool, however. We've all been in situations where we end up regretting coming off stupid. However, the 'VerySmart(TM)' that are featured on the r/IAmVerySmart community overcorrect in these situations way, way, beyond the norm.

"There's a lot of id involved in the VerySmartTM commenters we feature. They seem to have much of their self-esteem tied up in their (mis)conceptions of their own intelligence, or the person they're talking to depending on the circumstance. Who knows why," Thumbs0fDestiny mused. "Perhaps it's because everyone views themselves as the hero of their own story and some people prefer playing the intellectual to the athlete."

They also had other ideas about why some folks try so hard to seem intelligent: "Maybe it's because they are actually of above-average intelligence and their life's circumstances have led to them being right so often, they now just take it for granted, and then we just happen to catch them when that assumption bites them on the ass. Or maybe the person views intelligence as a weapon, a status symbol that must be flaunted for its own sake."

At the end of the day, everyone's desire to sound smart can be as unique and varied as there are different individuals in the world. Most likely, it's a mix of many small different reasons, the main one probably being that we've evolved to depend on our social group where reputation is everything... and being someone who's looked up to can mean the difference between a life of luxury and being an outcast who has to fend for themselves. However, our 'tribes' aren't dumb: they know when someone's desperately pretending to be someone better than they are.

As someone who is an underachiever with a high IQ, I agree completely. Frankly, based solely on personal observation, there are more people with average IQs who are successful thru hard work and common sense, than thru IQ. High IQ is useless if you are not given guidance and support in using it. What is worse, kids with high IQ are often expected to just automatically "know," I remember exasperating teachers and guidance counselors when I would ask questions about things they deemed simple or common knowledge. "As smart as you are, you should already know." After a while, as a young person, you stop asking.

One of the few times I agree with you. It comes from being told that high IQ is what makes us special and sets us apart. Often, little effort is made in teaching us "common sense" and hard work. Which I have noticed are more guarantees of general success than any amount of IQ

Being featured on the r/iamverysmart subreddit is all about being all bark but no bite: it’s a wall of shame for those who can’t back up their braininess with actual proof. Instead, they think that long words and synonyms will show everyone they’re the stars of the show (even though they’re clearly painting the props all the way backstage).

Interestingly, if you want to sound smarter and make a genuine impact on people (whether you’re applying to university, for a job, or just like the attention), communicating via text might not be the right way to go.

This is one of those things that drives me nuts - the whole "why don't they practice and lose the accent?" thing. Speech is often called the most complicated thing we do. Our brains have the capacity at birth to learn any language without an accent. That ability fades for the majority of people at ~5. We're talking 90% of the population who physically cannot learn another language without an accent past that point. It does not mean they are lazy. It does not mean they are stupid. It does not mean they need to practice more. It is literally impossible for them.

Learning to speak another language in adulthood without foreign accent is almost impossible. Not gonna say completely impossible, but extremely difficult and frankly, the effort required is simply not worth it. I speak several languages, two of them I consider my mother tongues and even in one of THOSE I have developed a slight foreign accent simply bc I do not live in that country nor do I use the language daily. Granted, if I moved there, after a year or two I would speak like locals bc I am able to pronounce all the necessary sounds due to learning the language in my childhood but still. And same goes for my mom who has lived 40 years in another country so she has developed a foreign accent in her own mother tongue.

I once taught a little boy who struggled to write his name. He was extremely intelligent and could debate clearly about any subject that had been read out to him. Spelling is not the be all and end all of intelligence.

You're right. For the average commenter online, but this is everywhere in articles online, on this website too. I think that you can expect to find, at least, one spelling or grammar mistake that could have been fixed if students today were still being taught the simple concept of "proofreading" before hitting 'send'. To be a successful professional, or at least seem like one, is to master the tools of whatever trade you do. For professional writers, including freelance bloggers that submit to sites like this and other professional journals, media, or print, their tool is the English language. If they haven't mastered it, they are hacks.

The Harvard Business Review wrote about a study where evaluators judged a person’s intelligence based on their pitches on why they should be hired. One part was videotaped while the other was transcribed (with flow-breaking sounds like ‘um’ removed, of course).

To sum up, the evaluators found those people who delivered their pitches in front of the camera and spoke aloud to be more intelligent than those who argued why they’re the best possible candidates in text form. Not only that, there was a greater emotional bond to the test subjects when they were seen on camera. Elle Woods’ videotaped pitch from ‘Legally Blonde’ to get into law school doesn’t sound silly anymore now, does it?

But if you do have to communicate via text, it’s best not to overshoot: be in writing who you are in real life. (Having an incredibly loud inner monologue that loves reading aloud everything that you write certain helps you realize when you overstep into cringe-territory.)

That means sprinkling in some common phrases and simple words, not just purple prose and delicately-crafted word amalgamations to delight and please the readers.

Dissenting opinion here, but I'm going to think a little bit less of you for *just* saying "huh?" seven times. You've got to give me a clue which bits you're not understanding. If I've tried to explain the entire thing six different ways and get another "huh?" with no other information, I'm going to start explaining everything to you as if you are five, because I've no evidence to the contrary. On the other hand, if it's a "huh, what do you mean by 'dissenting'?" (to pick an example), I will continue to give you my time to help you understand. I want to help you understand. But it's got to be two way feedback.

Forgetting him would mean that you forget that cop who got killed by terrorists who invaded the capitol in an attempt to overthrow democracy. Never forget the idiot with over 400 000 dead Americans to his name just because he was too busy saving the wealth of his friends and family, and this was supported by the party of Greedy Old Perverts.

Moderator Thumbs0fDestiny also revealed to Bored Panda how the subreddit has changed how it approves posts because of a few major slip-ups that led to people getting harassed. The last major shift they went through was moving the community to manual moderation. "Most of Reddit operates by allowing users to submit posts, then having a few automated checks in place to make sure that the post doesn't violate any major or obvious sub guidelines. For instance, does this post link to an outside source; is it a link that's been posted before; or does the post use a forbidden word in the title? Things like that are fairly easy for a bot to catch and save moderators a lot of time on menial verification tasks," they explained.

That is actually a horrible thing to drill into a child's mind. Constantly tell them they're smarter than others and teach them to be condescending, instead of teaching empathy and people skills and to value all people equally. Surely makes for some hateful, difficult life. (Sorry if my grammar is off.)

Unfortunately, a lot of highly intelligent children are taught this. Although, usually not this deliberately. They are also often taught that they are expected to have all the answers, don't ask questions about "simple" things, etc. All of which can set them up for a miserable existence. I still have major issues with asking for help, and feeling guilty if I don't have all the answers to a given situation. Thankfully, I didn't get the memo on being condescending, although I can unintentionally come across that way

Now, if the post passes all of those checks, it then goes live on the board, and redditors can see and comment on it, as usual. "At that point, the sub moderation becomes a collaboration between the moderators and the community. Moderators are out there checking things out of course, but we're just regular users, too, so we don't see everything. We instead partially rely on user reports to let us know when there's a problem that needs to be addressed. This is obviously not a failproof way of operating but it does get the job done most of the time."

Well, he is intelligent but that doesn't make him the right person to run a country. His biggest problems are that a) he's lazy and doesn't put in all the effort necessary (misses important meetings for example) and b) he has a serious honesty deficiency. He also made the mistake of listening to the wrong people. Delboy is right to point out the issues with his advisors, yes, he could ignore them but that's not how we tend to be governed in the UK.

Make sure you write out each step. Drill yourself on math facts, the more you can do the early math (addition, subtraction) in your head, the easier multiplication and division. Although I hate the "new" math, if you think of 8/2 =4 as 2+2+2+2 =8, then you see 4X2 =8, maybe that way would be easier for you

However, getting things right most of the time wasn't good enough to meet the moderators' standards for quality. They wanted to be right all the time when it came to posts not revealing any identifying information, as per the subreddit's very first rule. "There should, ideally, be no way for a user to see a post on our sub and use that post to find the person in that post. This means that all real names, phone numbers addresses, usernames, online community names, Twitter handles, etc. have to be redacted from the post before submitting it. There's no way a bot can guarantee that to happen. As such, we found ourselves in the position of having several posts live in the feed that contained that information which some people then used to track down and harass the VerySmart(TM) person."

Maths can be extremely abstract. That said, to think you are a better person because of mathematical ability is quite disgusting. I'm fortunate not to have crossed paths with such people. I'm aware of their existence and give them a wide berth.

I know he/she's being inconsiderate, but this almost made me wanna cry. I struggle with math stuff, numbers, graphs, calculations, sometimes even the concepts, especially when there is no "real-life" example. I can usually get it - eventually, but it can take me quite a while to actually understand it, if you catch my drift. Again, I know this human just wants to feel good about something, but their way of going about it still stuck a sore spot;( hang in there all you critters, struggling with a particular subject. I hear ya, I get it, you're still worthy <3

Thumbs0fDestiny was very candid about the situation: they'd let down Reddit's standards, r/IAmVerySmart's standards, as well as society's standards. "So we had to put a stop to it. The only way to make sure that didn't happen was to put the sub on full lockdown. All new posts are automatically filtered into a moderation queue where they sit until a human volunteer checks them to be sure there aren't any rule violations. This change has mostly been behind the scenes and therefore largely noticed by the community except to say new posts now arrive on the sub in batches when a moderator is clearing the queue, where before they would trickle in one at a time. The change had the desired effect though. We've not received a single complaint about harassment from anyone since we instituted the new policy."

I was a “gifted student.” They tried to teach me extra math - I was just really good at reading and math was my weakest point. In the end, we got to do a cool experiment where we built miniature wood structures to light on fire, and then the class was canceled. I basically only learned that I was awful at math and how to start fires in this class.

Not to mention, even with being able to just assimilate information, kid's probably going to crash in high school when it content volume goes through the roof, because they never learned to study. Their parents have probably never taught them the skill, and place all their value on their intelligence. Come the crash, they'll need support, and there will be no one there.

$18.75 - if you're going to do maths as a grad student do it accurately. (And I did it by doing 25/2=12.50, 12.50/2=6.25, 12.50+6.25=18.75)

Am I the only one who does not bother to recalculate while shopping. I have never been a big spender and I never really calculate things at the shop. I just go and buy what I need if I can afford it. Does this whole thing (and its importance) come from the fact that in the US the VAT is not included in the price so you kinda need to calculate on the go while shopping so you don’t get surprised at the cashier? I really hope I don’t sounds rude or anything, I am just really surprised that everyone in the comments actually explain their way of calculation which makes me think they they all do it when there is a sale or something.

“Like over 18” don’t know what kind of ‘math grad student’ this person is.... but there’s easier ways to get to the exact amount?? 10% of $25 is $2.50; 2.5x$2.50 is $6.25 off, so $18.75 is what they’d pay. So all that for an “over $18” estimate when they probably posted that from a phone with a calculator anyway.

Learning to navigate and read at 11 is normal. I read a series of 3 books, in total they were about 1,000 pages together?? Yeah, At 9. You're not exceptional. Learning languages at a young age is something immigrant kids often have to do but that's not impressive is it?

Plot twist: He is just an average Swede. He learned Swedish at age 3 because he is Swedish. Sweden is full of lakes and islands and most people learn to swim at an early age. Sailing is very popular in Sweden and if your parents can afford it there are many sailing classes for 7 year olds. English is taught to children from ages 6 or 7 Sweden. Navigation is part of the sailing classes, likely at the fourth year of them. Likely got to sail his parents yacht in a safe bay for an hour or so. Compulsory third language starts at age 13, and he picked German. Every 13 year old in Sweden learns a third language in school. He learned calculus and trigonometry in high school like so many others. He made his driver's licence at 18 like most Swedes because you absolutely need a car unless you live in a big city. He made it to the swimming nationals twice in a country with a small population with very little national competition. I think he forgot * Found out my IQ is 156 from sketchy website

I thought the exact same thing. Change the languages and that is almost everyone I know.

I learned to read at 3 and read LOTR at nine and I fail my classes. A lot of these are average.

Dude I read lord of the rings in fifth grade you’re not impressive. I tried the simarillion but it’s just too boring. Edit: oh no. The stupidity is contagious. I’m becoming one of them.

Nothing really special here. Swimming at the age of four. Come to the Netherlands, you'd be considered somewhat behind with your swimming skills at that age ;) To be honest, it's gone a bit too far here, but learning to swim at age four is nothing special. It's your parents that make you do it. If anything it's a list of the results of pushy parenting.

I actually kind of agree with this... you modify your language to the person you're talking to. Why is that bad?

Yeah I simplify my English when I’m speaking with someone who is just learning English. I wouldn’t tell them “how arbitrary are these meteorological events,” I’d just say “what crazy weather eh!” Etc

No, I ask "Will this clearly communicate my thoughts to this person?" It's a completely different mindset.

If you've never had to consider your audience and they'll "get what you're saying right away", then either your ego is massive or you are in an echo chamber with zero thought diversity.

It means "from Vinci", the village where he was born and is not a real surname.
