How much do we know about what's going on in our pets' minds? If you believe that it's all simple in there, pondering about a delicious snack or where's the ball, think again. Sometimes our furry friends seem to have an incredibly intelligent side we're not aware of.

Reddit user Overt Operation started a viral thread about the most "creepily intelligent thing" our pets have ever done and it quickly spread to other platforms, gaining most of its popularity on Twitter. The well known Wholesome Memes account posted the same question and hundreds of responses started pouring in, each more surprising than the previous one.

Check out the best tweets Bored Panda has collected from the thread, upvote your favorite ones, and be sure to share about the times your own pets acted ridiculously smart in the comment section below.

Rats are super smart. One of mine figured out what the latch on his cage door was for. He wasn't strong enough to open it, but he would start grabbing at it to let me know when he wanted to come out.

Yeah. One of my rats lost her eyesight, but she feels around her cage and can get around just fine.

I had a few girls that would get out of the cage every night. One would always come sit by my face and tap my cheek when she figured it was time to go up.

We reached out to Dr. Brian Hare, author of Genius of Dogs, to find out more about our pets and their intelligence. He is a core member of the Center of Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke University and has been researching the evolution of cognition by studying both humans and animal species.

When asked about the intelligence of our dogs, the best-selling author said that sometimes we do overestimate them, especially when it comes to understanding physics. “Dogs usually fail principles of connectivity, where they get tangled around lamp posts. Or gravity, when they drop their ball on a really steep hill.”

However, we underestimate them too: “For instance, dogs are better at reading our body language than our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos. Even though dogs do not have hands and do not point, they can understand what we mean when we point, either to help them retrieve something they’ve lost, or if we want them to see something that we have seen.”

There's actually some evidence that cats understand most of what we say... And that they simply don't care to do anything about it. Here, we have a delightful exception

They do, I'm convinced. My dad had a fall and I told my cat to keep an eye on him till he's better. The cat slept next to him for a week (he normaly never does) and followed him every where.

Depends on the cat, and possibly what we're asking of them. Both our cat and dog understand quite a bit, since we talk to them a lot. They're both pretty smart.

Of course they learn our words! When the sound "dinner time" happens, there is food. Calling that cool toy a "pink fluffy ball" or "feather toy" means something. Even if they don't see colors like we do, they CAN differentiate them. So use the word sounds, and they will learn them.

Humans are also able to connect with dogs on a deeper emotional level, like through eye contact. “Researchers have found that when your dog stares at you, oxytocin, also known as the ‘hug hormone’ goes up in you, and when you return your dog’s gaze, their oxytocin goes up,” Dr. Hare explained.

He added: “This promotes feelings of warmth and bonding, and is also known as an oxytocin loop. This also happens to be how babies bond with their parents—before they can walk or talk. They rely on eye contact to bond, and it seems our dogs do the same.”

There have been countless studies about dogs and their incredible ability to detect smells. However, Dr. Hare mentioned that their sense of smell is actually not as remarkable compared to other animals, for example, a rat. “But because our human sense of smell is so pitiful, we find it wondrous that dogs can use their sense of smell to track down endangered animals, or find a missing child by smelling a scrap of clothing,” he said.

According to the best-selling author, smell might help dogs remember someone who has been gone for a long time, or who has changed remarkably in appearance. But what smell has done, paired with their relationship to us, is to help us through partnership—dogs can help smell explosives, or detect narcotics, or find missing people, or endangered species. "Because dogs are motivated to help us, their sense of smell benefits us in a way that a rat’s never would," he explained.

When it comes to canine intelligence, it is not just one-dimensional. Dr. Hare said that a person can be smart at math but terrible at English, one can be a great public speaker but a terrible listener. Dogs are the same: "There are many different types of intelligence and different dogs are good at different things. That being said, we can certainly help dogs hone their natural abilities, through training and practice."

This is what my cats do whenever I'm having an endometriosis flare up. They all take turns acting as a live heating pad and they won't leave my side. My one cat Finneas will even follow me to the bathroom and put his paw on me whenever he can't lay on top of me. When my dad passed last year he became so attached to me that I had to start taking him on car rides with me cause he'd destroy the house if I left him alone.. he just knew I didn't want to me alone and it definitely helped me cope with the loss better.

We also contacted jei, a Twitter user who replied to this thread and shared how their cat came running into the room after they sneezed, trying to check up on them. Talking about how well our four-legged friends know us, jei mentioned that they probably understand a lot more than we realize.

For example, when their mom comes over, their fluffy cat is well aware of how to get a few pleasant rubs: "He knows she might ignore him if he sits quietly but if he brushes by her with his tail up, she’ll stop to rub him," they told Bored Panda. The same goes when their mother is eating, the cat will wait until she’s ready to get up, then "he comes tail up to entice her to rub him first before she moves."

Well just so you know..thats what sleep apnea IS. Sleep apnea is literally a condition where you stop breathing for up to a minute at a time at least 5 times per hour during a nights sleep but you can't suffocate 2 death that way cuz ur brain will always wake you up b4 you do. Ofcourse if you dont know u have sleep apnea and dont get it treated then you do have a really high chance of dying from other complications with your heart and things like that caused by the condition so if this kitty is the reason the mom found out she had the condition then yea id count that as saving her life. Otherwise she just got woken up during 1 of the thousands of times she stopped breathing that year.

That's what I was thinking. I mean, it's possible the cat reacted to her not taking a breath for a while, but it sounds like this is an explanation the author made up and decided must be the truth.

To clarify, people don't die from sleep apnea. It's usually a cessation of breathing for 30-40 seconds, and then a gasp as the brain wakes itself enough to get breathing again. This happens many times an hour, depending on severity. They may die from other diseases related to sleep apnea, which increases risk of other diseases, but not sleep apnea itself. Cat didn't save her life.

Jei thinks that pets can sniff out our troubles simply because they watch us and have keen senses for picking up things we don’t yet realize ourselves. For example, their fluffy feline is very observant and caring: "If I sneeze he is usually coming to check and meow at me, if he hears me fake crying or making sad noises he will come (my chunky cat is not impressed or pressed to check), and if I am sick both will usually be more cuddly and tend to stick around more from room to room."

This is only part of the story. When the commercials come on and he leaves, he makes himself a nice cup of tea and a fish finger sandwich so he's ready for the next part to start.

Exactly. And when the next set of commercials comes in, he goes to take the empty cup and plate away and go to the bathroom for a quick pee before the documentary starts again.

Yes! Every one of cats freak out too! I breed Persian kittens, so I have a "few" of the furballs running around...so if I'm watching/listening to tiktok, YouTube, etc and there is a kitten or cat making a sound, ALLL of my cats in hearing distance will literally race to my phone and freak out, trying to find the poor baby kitty lol

This reminds me of my brothers first service dog. My brother was alseep in the room and I was crashed on the couch (we lived together) and I heard his dog rummaging around next to the couch. I woke up and leaned over and saw that she had the remote in her mouth. (She was just under 2 hrs old so I thought maybe she was in puppy mode and wanted to chew it up). I watched what she was doing and she hit the power button. Once the tv started up she CHANGED THE CHANNEL to animal planet so she could watch pitbulls and parolees! She absolutely adored Tia and would stand up and wag her tail every time she was on! This was about 10 yrs ago now. She had to retire and is with a friend and my brother has since passed, but from what I hear she still loves watching Tia!

I mean no disrespect but I think you are thinking about psychiatric service dogs. ESAs don't require haveing any proper training because under the ADA they are not considered service animals because of there lack of training. That's why legally they don't have public access rights. My friend has an ESA cat and psychiatric service dog too that's how I know. Also I read the ada website a lot of times just so I can have my facts straight. Sorry. I promise I'm not tryto be mean

They assume that we can train our pets to become more intelligent. "I call my kitties Bonnie and Clyde sometimes because of the things they get into together. … I know I have seen them work together to figure out things on their own."

Bonnie (chunky) is highly food-motivated and always watches her owners to see where they hide the delicious snacks and how to reach them. She even figured out three ways to open most doors in the house. "Clyde (fluffy) would usually watch her and it would be several times watching before he could figure out how to do what she was doing," jei told us.

One of mine learnt that from a cat resort when I had to go away for a bit. It’s insane the stuff they do. My mini would get a firm “off the table!!!” Anytime she jumped up onto the kitchen bench or dining table etc one day I needed to make lunches and I told her “get of the dang table mini!!!” She looks around and continues to place all 4 paws on a folded cloth napkin off to the side and squat = technically not touch the bench. I could go on about her smarts but that one always makes me laugh, the fact she even processes that thought makes me proud.

My cousin had a BIG orange boi named Josh who was an absolute terror. It got to the point she had to put child locks on the fridge and freezer because one time, she came home to what she thought was blood on the floor, but it turned out to be raspberry juice from a bag that Josh stole from the freezer. Another time, her roommate came home and couldn't find Josh. He figured Josh was hiding so he went to go grab ice from the freezer and found Josh literally chilling in a closed freezer. Thankfully he wasn't super cold so it had probably been a few minutes but yeah...

We had a cat and a dog who were in it together. The cat could see where we were getting the dog treats from up in the cupboard. We wondered how the box of dog treats was frequently ending up on the floor and the cupboard door above the counter open. The cat was jumping up on the counter, opening the exact cupboard door and knocking the box of treats onto the floor for the dog. At one time we also had a little dog who was very fastidious. NEVER had an accident in the house after being trained. If she felt sick and was going to throw up she would go over to the newspaper rack and whine. We knew to run over to put some newspaper down so she could be sick and not throw up on the carpet. So many other ways she was so very smart.

My sister has 3 rescue cats and 1 of them is a calico menace!! My sister went on a trip and bought a automatic feeder for them. I would stop by once a day to check up on them. That calico figured out how to trick the feeder to give out more food, so when I stopped by that night it was nearly empty. How do I know it was the calico? She was throwing up throughout the house. Had to spend the night with her.

Mine don't, because there's no space for them to be able to crawl in from under my cabinets or my dresser. I've watched one of my boys grab the handle and walk backwards to open it, and then to shut it he just sits up and pushes his paws against the handle. He's very polite about it, so he's allowed to use that bottom drawer as long as he doesn't try to trick anyone into getting in it.

A well-behaved adult dog. My 4 yo bull terrier mix knocks puppies down and stands on them. The other day, he knocked down my friend's 3yo human grandson and stood on him smiling and panting. The little boy was alarmed, but despite his tendency to throw fits, he didn't cry about this. He just got up and continued eating his watermelon. I scolded my dog, but the boy wasn't offended.

My dad used to do this thing he called "washing machine" with my brother and I in a partially flooded canoe at the beach when we went camping. My dog HATED water but my brother and I kept screaming and laughing so he paddled all the way out to where he couldn't touch to save us. Once he got there, however, he seemed to realize: 1. My brother and I were not in danger. 2. He wasn't touching the bottom! Immediately swam back to shore! XD But he did proceed to stand in the water where it was just up to his belly and bark and whine at us until we stopped playing in the canoe XD

Even if we tend to exaggerate their intelligence, we can’t deny that sometimes our furry friends act ridiculously smart, surprising everyone around them. The stories in this viral thread range from acts of mild heroism to clever displays of how our pets simply try to show us that they care.

Body language is an important form of communication to many animal species, our pets included. Cats and dogs become adept at reading the body language of their people. And don't forget that they have hearing that is many, many times better than our own.

I had a stray kitty named Money who not once in 3 years that I had her would sit in my lap. The day I had to put down another kitty, "Itchy" the love of my life that slept curled up on me every night, I was a mess and inconsolable. Money kitty jumped up on my lap that night and stayed with me all night, knowing I was missing that kitty.... and never did it again. I'll remember her doing that as long as I live.

That's so funny because aluminum foil can be a good deterrent for cats jumping on surfaces they shouldn't. Doesn't work with every cat but the noises usually scare them off. And your cat loves it! What a silly girl! ❤️

My two female cats love me, but they go totally gaga when men come to the house. It's embarrassing. They're such tarts. They are all over them. Women friends they can take or leave, but I swear if they could bake pies, they would for a male visitor.

I tried to rehabilitate a parrot that was the same. Hated women. But he liked men and kids. I brought him home and got him settled in his new space. When it was time for bed i turned off the light and was leaving the room. He said very clearly "Turn the light back on" I was obviously super shocked & said "What?" He repeated more slowly "Turn... The light... Back on..." i backed to switch turned it on and say on my couch and cried. It was THE creepiest thing ever!! A couple of days later i took him with me to my parents house & my nephew was there. He was fascinated with my bird and talking to him. My sister came in and told my nephew to get away from him cuz she was afraid of his size. His name was Cleo. (i didn't name him, he was 20 years old when i got him) Cleo looked at me and said "I don't like that girl." My sister said "Did your bird just say he doesn't like me?" I was like "No! I'm sure that's not what he said..." So he repeated "I don't like that girl. Ok?" 😱 "Yes sir.... "

Parrots are as intelligent as a 3 to 4 year old! Wouldn't surprise me if there are a few who are more intelligent just like some kids can go to high school when they're barely 10.

Kinda reminds me of the first time I met my mom's cat. I was adopted at age 7 and she had had this cat since he was 3 months old...he was born 3 months before me so we were basically the same age. The day he meets me he puts a giant gash in my leg and nearly sends me to the hospital. He hated me til we were both 16 and he got in a nasty fight with a raccoon. He won like usual but this time he had a giant gash in his cheek. I had some exp after volunteering at the animal hospital so I patched him up and slept on the floor with him by the fire. After that, I was the only person who he would wake up at night for pats. And with him if you don't wake up, he BITES you as hard as he can on the forehead and demand love. He passed at 21. Kept fighting raccoons til he was 20 tho... (Also this cat was insane. He killed a badger in the countryside on NY and drug it to the door-5miles away-when he was 3 y/o. An officer followed a blood trail to my mom's front door and saw the badger...they had Q's)

I used to have an outdoor cat that i was feeding for years that was the opposite! He loved women but he was really uncomfortable with men!! I used to take him in to feed him or when it was cold but if i had any man visiting he wouldn't come in or he would eat quickly and run to the door! He was acting even more crazy if the man was tall! I think he had a bad experience and was very scared when he was around tall men

They understand the language. We had a cat that used to come sleep in our garage. He didn't look like a stray but he came over every day. He wouldn't let us pet him or get too close. One day I was in the garage and he was giving me the stink eye and I started talking to him: "you are one strange cat--all the other cats like us but you won't even let us get near you". He stood up from the bed he was sleeping in, stretched, jumped down from the shelf he was sleeping on, walked over to me and rubbed against my legs. After that he was friendly and would even come in the house and follow me around.

My DDR shepherd Loki HATES the vet. As we sat waiting silently just after he came back panting and traumatized from his exam, he looked up at some wall art--a rainbow metallic cut out of a cat. I watched as his eyes study it. That was amazing, but then he turned his head and looked to the left wall so I did too. There was another cut out of puppies. He looked that one over as well but more quickly. Then he turned around and looked for the 3rd one BEHIND HIM. In 20 seconds he took in the details of the 1st decoration, made the correlation of it being like the one on the wall beside him, then either recalled from memory or deduced there was one behind him. VELOCIRAPTOR SMART.

My cat is 15 and she snuggles me all of the time her purrs make me able to breathe better. When she hurt her paw it was my time to shine I just keep humming in a deep voice to simulate purring and when I’d stop she would give me a dirty look. Now she knows I can do it we just purr cuddle each other it’s so soothing.

Gallbladder got out ... Mika, my then 13 yo cat, would sleep on my right side, not on my left side, for a few weeks. Purring against the operation area, however, has not prevented a chronic pain there. The day I got diagnosed, my other cat died due to complications after surgery, and ... maybe, maybe if he had still been alive as well, they'd have gotten me rid of that damned pain that now is my most loyal follower since 10 years.

Pilot lights heat a thermo couple, hot thermo couple produces electricity, electricity produced holds open small electromagnetic valve, open valve allows gas flow when needed. So if the pilot light goes out then no gas flow. This story is not true.

Why would a furnace build pressure? This makes no sense and is total B.S.

If the pilot was no longer lit, there would not be any flame or combustion occurring. The only way this story works is if a safety valve was stuck/broken allowing the pressure to build up beyond safe limits. Just saying!

Natural gas is under less than a quarter pound of pressure as delivered to most homes, propane about a half pound. It is a volume thing not pressure. There is literally no way for either to build to a dangerous level of pressure at the furnace. On a side note, when they do building inspection on gas lines they pressurize them ( with air ) to 100 times the normal pressure of natural gas ( still only around 24 psi ) and make sure it holds for 24 hours. Natural gas is NOT a pressurized system.

She called the fire department because her cat threw a fit? Smoke detector won't go off unless there is smoke, a gas leak set it off. Also, pilot lights have a thermo couple that closes in the absence of heat. So, when the pilot light goes out the valve closes.

My first dog was a chocolate lab lived with my dad in a pub when I was a teen. My dad would get up and go to the local supermarket and get fresh bread for the kitchen first thing in the morning he was unwell so it was my job to drive down it wasn't unusual to find the dogs wandering around in the pub early hours they were pub dogs though my dad had taken them out for a wee and left them in the pub at some point. Rolo came running up to me tried to stroke her and she ran away thought nothing of it and went to leave she sat on front of me again tried to stroke her she ran away Into the back again, tried to leave she did the same looking back at me. Country pub so thought maybe she was pointing to the drain where rats used to scurry past in the sewer. Relented a bit annoyed and said "What!?" She ran into the back. In a huff put the keys on the bar telling her "fine I will come and look but it's just the bloody sewer rats!" Followed her she was laying next to my dad who had collapsed.

When I lived in Dallas, one of my neighbors had a deaf cat. It had no sense of balance. An electrical short started a fire. Her cat crawled up the bedspread to wake her up. The only thing she was able to save was her cat. She was standing in the parking lot with her cat in her pajamas. One of the neighbors called 911.

How was it building up pressure if the pilot light went out? That's not how they work. At most you were at risk of gas suffocation but definitely not from the water heater exploding. Without the pilot light there is literally nothing to heat up the water to build up the preasure. Dummy.

I walked out of the shower one morning many years ago to my cat-of-that-time proudly pinning down a bird. In my bedroom. I thought in horror, "Oh God! A dead bird?!" but it was in perfect health. Scared to pieces, but fine. Having realized I don't like birds, he proceeded to then bring me a chipmunk, a mouse, and a baby squirrel ---- all alive, unharmed. He just wanted to play the way he knew how, as a born-raised wild-feral. He figured out it wasn't which animal, and proudly brought me one of his cat toys. RIP, buddy, I will alwys smile when i think of you.

My rotti suddenly became very clingy about the time I started having health issues, after several months I was finally diagnosed as 4th stage cancer with about a 2% chance of survival...after 3.5yrs of treatment she started going back to normal & I went for my check up, the dr told me not to expect remission but I told him don't worry I'm fine!! He kept telling me there's no chance it's gone, again I said I'm fine!! They were all shocked when my results came in & even ran them again...I was actually in remission!! When I met with my team of Drs they asked why I was so sure it was gone & I told them "my dog"!!😂 At that point I'm sure they figured I lost my mind until I explained the whole situation of how she was acting prior to being diagnosed & during my treatments & then how things went back to normal about a month before I finished treatment, they were shocked & couldn't believe it!! I still think some of them thought I'd lost my ever loving mind but didn't question it since they

In 2014 I slipped And fell Breaking what I Later found out was my fibula Which ended up requiring surgery to put 7 bolts 7 screws and a 3 by 5" plate reconnecting my fibula to my ankle I ankle however while we were waiting for the paramedics and I was laying on the ground my sister's dog whom I taking over the care of him his name was Prince Noir He kept going over to their pool and sticking his snout in the water and then coming over to me and opening his mouth dribbling water all over my now twisted backward fostick backward foot he did it over and over and over until finally paramedics came and stable men stabilize my ankle and put me on a gurney and took me to the hospital it was so weird I kept saying Princy that's not going to work... But the funny part is the water with somehow soothing it wasn't hot or cold it was just soothing... And I don't know if it was just because he was doing it that it felt soothing but what I do know is that it seemed like he Just wanted to help..

I really dislike when people say "We truly don't deserve them". We are the reason for their EXISTANCE - they are our "comfort". Yes we do deserve AND so do they!!

Some cats can get overstimulated very easily and will respond that way. We were "gifted" a cat (owner never returned for him) and he used to get that way very quickly. I don't think he was abused, just handled roughly and without respect for his boundaries. We've worked out what he can tolerate and what is too much. He actually enjoys being pet now. My other cat is really tolerant and likes his tummy and feet rubbed very gently. Too rough and he'll swat you with no claws, so you better respect it!

Cats often start play-biting when you touch them wrong, and when you then respond by holding your hand still and letting them bite you, they lick your fingers to say it's okay.

My cat has done this as well. He's usually pretty careful but every once in a while he will accidentally get me but then turn around and apologize by making his sorry noise (very distressed meows) and licking the owie lol.

There is a black cat in my neighborhood named Simon and he usually hangs out in a mini ally beside his owner’s house and during quarantine when I would take my dog on a walk I would pass that house looking for him and at first he really wanted to come see me but was nervous of my dog and after a while I got him to come near me by holding my dog behind me so she couldn’t pounce on him and I got to pet him, he would even flop on the warm sidewalk so I could pet his belly and even got brave enough to meet my puppy and he let her sniff him a bunch ☺️

We've been homesteading starting the n an RV. Our building is being delivered so we built a new extra large dog yard. My neighbors dog went into heat and we put her in with my males ( fixed) so she could go to work and not get her house torn up. I took my dominant female Little Girl out so there would be no girl fight I came home and my hubby told me she had been sitting in my chair ALL DAY So we asked her...oh are you a hooman now? And she barked, he told her No, no barking, humans don't bark.. We were then treated to almost 5 mins of grumble growl "talking"(she's a husky mix) it was hysterical She was all I talk, I hooman, I get chair not pen

I drove from N. Michigan to Florida with my cat. Just outside Atlanta I stopped at a convenience store and she hopped out and ran into the woods behind the store. Knowing her like I did, I sat in the door of my car and waited. A man pulled up to go in the store, but asked me if I was OK. " I'm just waiting for my cat to do her business." I pointed at the woods. "Ah, miss, you're never gonna see that cat again." I smiled. Just then here comes my girl, she strolls by the guy and gives him the "Sup?" nod and hops in the car. As I got in the car to leave I heard him say "If I hadn't seen that with my own eyes...."

I also had a golden retriever and before we had to put him down (he was in immense pain with hip dysplasia) and the day before we had to put him down he sits in the backyard looking at the sun set while my other dog walks over and sits next to him for a good 30 minutes before they decided to come In since it got dark and had to comfort my stepmom who was on the verge of breaking down. They've never just sat together in the yard like that

My 2 dogs were a year apart. They were BFFs. Always playing. At 8, Heidi died from autoimmune disease. Before we put her to sleep, Lacy stayed with her constantly. Lacy grieved with us. She wouldn't eat, didn't want to go for our daily runs. We decided to get a pup to get her moving again. It did. She would go for the runs, walking, following pup. They are friends....but Lacy just is not the same since she lost her Heidi. It's been 2 years.

my twwo old dogs, Kona and Hilo got very sick after eating a box of raisins and both had kidney problems. Afterwards they were both fine and thankfully survived, but not long after that I was at school and getting picked up in a rush. I ask what's wrong and my caretaker says we are going to the vet hospital to say goodbye to Kona. He was almost going to be let out of the vet bc he was fine with the raisins but the doctors had discovered he had a huge tumor cancer growing on his heart. We stayed with him the whole time as the vet put him down. When my family and I came home, Hilo looked at us like, where is my brother? I said,, "No, Hilo. He's never coming home anymore." I miss you Kona. <3<3

I had my pit, King. At bedtime he would lay next to me until I fell asleep. At that time he would go to his bed and pillow, (@ the foot of my bed on the floor), and sleep. In the morning he would come to the side of my bed. when I opened my eyes he would be looking at me waiting for me to wake up. Only then would he let me know he needed to go outside. I miss him so so much. I love that dog. I think he used to get hot too but would sleep/lay next to me until I fell asleep. He was truly special.

for those who do not know, hypoglycemia is low blood sugar, hyperglycemia is high blood sugar. This is mostly found in diabetics and pre diabetics (I'm pre type 1) and its referred to as highs and lows sometimes. If you go too high or low for too long you can end up in a coma, or sometimes worse. To fix hypo, you eat high sugar/digestable things, like milk, orange juice, some choose candys. Hyper you use insulin.

The same cat and dog I wrote a post about earlier, well, the cat was at it again. When my parents moved to the country it was summer. They kept the sliding glass door opened to cool the place. One day my dad was doing the dishes and looking out the window saw Morris and Pepper calmly walking down the road. WTH? Morris had figured out how to slide the screen door open and go for a walk together. From then on we kept the screen door locked.

When our dog was getting slower in his last weeks (8yo blond lab with the big C) our cat, & his biggest fan, would bring him mice/birds. All were alive and he would look at them as to say 'Thanks, but what do I do with this?'. When the vet came round to do the deed, she came into the room as the dog was sedated and just licked his head till he fell asleep. She then snuggled with him as the vet gave the last injection. Was so sweet made all of us inc. vet cry.

Our stray siamese even consoled us at his dying moment. We were waiting home for the vet as it was his last day [almost 21 yrs and his body was completely worn out]. We were crying our eyes out and he still managed to crawl on our lap and put his paw in our hands. My heart broke & melted at the same time. It's more than 1 year ago now but the memory still wets my eyes.

Yeah, your family didn't deserve that dog.

While I agree, for the Original Poster to hear you, you'd have to touch the light colored link, bandito_corpse, under the story and post on reddit.

In terminology for ppl living in the US, I believe that gammon joint would be the same as like smoked ham hock, as gammon is the word for ham.

OMG - so you have a family member for 6 years, and then he's "dropped" off? This is horrible.

Doesn't say much about those "mothering" instincts either.

That's just not right. You don't get rid of a family member because you're having a baby. What you probably missed out on. Too sad.

I had to give my cat away after I had my baby. We had two cats, and when the baby came, one of them became very unhappy and started hiding all the time, not eating, and peeing everywhere. I rehomed her with my parents. She was much happier after that and lived a good life until she passed away (she was already about 10 when the baby was born). It is better to rehome a pet for their sake or for the sake of a child than to risk having an incident happen or force the pet to be unhappy. That being said, the mom in this story didn't even know how the dog would react, so acting preemptively was a sh*tty thing to do. Also, I would never agree with taking a dog to the pound.

That is why the story doesn't have many upvotes. But I think it should just be removed as it doesn't belong here.

I had a cat named "Fluffy" and when I was six years old she had a litter of kittens. My father put Fluffy and her babies in a box and left them at the pound. He was too cheap to have her spayed. Decades later, I still sometimes cry for her.

How is this a good story? Your mom is a bi@#h! She didn't even give Nico a chance to see if he'd be ok with the new memeber of the family. At the very least she cod have found him a good home.

My dog found out where the garbage was so we put a latch on the cupboard... he ripped the whole door off. Not smart but very determined!

My dog was awesome. We just got a new puppy, and had opened up the garage door. The puppy escapes, so does my dog. 5 seconds later my dog comes back tugging the end of the leash that the puppy is attached to. We eventually put a gate outside the garage. And a dog door out the back.

‘when I’m watching something’… implies screen is already unlocked when cat touches it. As for pausing music, for many phones u can do this while phone is locked :)

Right? When my husband and I moved, we came to the new house the night before and got a room set up for the cats so they could be out of the way of the movers, then I brought them up first thing in the morning and spent the whole day comforting them while stuff was getting moved in and out.

Consider in your comments that not always moving is just moving out because you found new job or new place to leave. Sometimes you leave because of war, natural disasters or some other stuff. I don't think that that should be an excuse for leaving animal behing but try to be less judgy on people - you know just short version of their story - it's not always like Yours.
