Ukraine now wants to join those 3 states in their independent alliance with NATO. Yet Russia wants Ukraine to become part of their territory for economic/political reasons and refuses to let them join by declaring war.

Bored Panda reached out to the subreddit’s founder Patrick to find out how Reddit's cartography powerhouse has been doing since we last spoke a while ago. He describes himself as “a Denver-based techno-geek with a focus on all things geospatial and cartographic and a coding hobbyist with an emphasis in geospatial applications.”

“The subreddit has been stable the last few months, however, that all changed this morning with the news out of Ukraine of the military action there,” he said. “The subreddit usually has between 2,000 and 4,000 users at a given moment on a normal day. That number spiked to a peak of over 20,000 users looking for current maps of the situation there.”

As Terry Pratchett pointed out, all roads leave Rome, people just walk the wrong way. All the roads started in Rome and were built out so they could get where they were going. Doesn't make much of a difference but the Franks weren't doing public works projects to make it easier to go get some good olive oil.

The fact that many of these roads are still extant and even still passable is a testament to how well they were constructed. Meanwhile, modern paving jobs start falling apart after the first good rain.

I thought this looked a bit odd, since my wife, an atheist, is an elected office holder in Pennsylvania, one of the states above in green. Indeed, there are seven states that explicitly forbid atheists from holding public office. Pennsylvania isn't one of them. The law in PA, states that nobody who believes in the existence of a God, or follows any religion may be disqualified for their belief. It says nothing about atheists.

Patrick believes that the way people think of cartography is changing. “The previous generation was accustomed to paper maps that they used to navigate. This required skills in orientation and awareness that are no longer necessary with digital maps on mobile devices. Whilst there are lots of articles that eulogize the loss of these skills, I don't think it's necessarily all bad.”

This doesn’t have anything to do with netherlands, but… In finland and other nordic countries, the land is rising(land uplift), so the land is expanding and sea is receding continuously. This is because during the last ice age all the ice that formed put so much pressure on the land that it sunk by a lot, almost hundred meters, but im not sure. Today the land is still rising 3-10mm/year depending on the area :) so Nordic countries are constantly expanding.

Wanting anything is not a crime, but subverting the rules/government of society generally is. I don't know about other countries, but in the US it's very, common practice to have prison time reduced for good behavior (i.e. respecting the prison system), so that's the other side of punishing prisoners for escaping.

Unless you're a murderer, rapist, or some other kind of violent offender that presents a clear and present danger to others, prison is truly an archaic form of punishment and it's hard to believe that in 2022, we still haven't come up with a better way of handling it. I imagine that's because most people who do things like steal and sell drugs do so because they are poor and desperate to change their situation. Those are systemic issues that need addressed and fixed and punishing individuals who act out of desperation is really only a band-aid "solution"; it doesn't change their circumstances, it won't help them once they're out, and it doesn't really rehabilitate, educate, or help them to find employment that will pay a living wage. In fact, being a prisoner and convicted criminal only hurts their chances of making positive life changes, not to mention the fact that it punishes the families of those convicted as well. There has to be a better way...

It’s because it’s considered a natural desire for a human to be free. They’ll obviously try to catch you, but there will be no time added to your sentence. This doesn’t mean you won’t be apprehended or fined

I only found out about this recently and thought it was really interesting. The reasoning is that needing to be free is so fundamentally to human nature that you can't punish someone for acting on that need.

I believe that POWs are not supposed to be punished for trying to escape on the grounds that soldiers should try to escape from the enemy - it's expected behavior. It should follow that prisoners should try to escape from prison.

According to Patrick, the history of cartography is full of changes in how maps are created and used. And right now, “we're seeing another shift in response to the digital age.” The sub’s founder explained that “the digital generation has a heightened awareness of how maps can visualize data. The tools to make maps have been democratized. This has increased interest in finding new and clever ways to see spatial data.”

“I think the hottest trends are in maps that elucidate some sort of political understanding. These can be maps of elections, voting districts, gerrymandering, political recognition, voting patterns, etc. Social media is engineered to spur controversy and this is most apparent in hot button political topics. Politically themed content will garner more discussion, controversy and comments than most other topics.”

Tonga was a "British Protectorate" from 1901-1970, while officially independent, the british controlled their foreign affairs, military protection, and used the British Military to prevent rival tribal leaders from claiming the throne from the brits ally royal family there.

That's fantastic! Beavers are a "keystone species", that make massive contributions to the health of forests, wetlands, waterways, and even water tables! The American West is the place where they're needed most, they were almost killed off by fur traders and other interlopers, and if we had more beavers... we'd have less drought and fewer wildfires.

“The topic is map projection distortion. We all know that flat maps distort the shape of the Earth. However, visualizing this is quite difficult. My plugin will work so that a user can input a projection and a given region. The output will be a map overlay that shows where the scale is closest to true and where it falls below a given threshold,” he told us and added that he’ll be happy to share it when it's finished.

It looks like this is still south of Bhutan and Nepal. Looks like Bangladesh + West Bengal and Jihar states of India. I fear Bangladesh will be arguably the most impacted population by a rising sea level. Their economy is some ~45% based on agriculture, and that agriculture is almost entirely based on much of their country being a low-lying river delta. Rising sea level will destroy the economy and food supply, while compacting the population into increasingly dense areas as the low land gets quickly swallowed. They need Dutch intervention on a massive scale to address their water levels.

It's interesting Colorado is so early, as in 1992, the voters passed an amendment to prevent gay folks from ever being recognized as a protected class. The amendment was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. Anti-gay hate group, Focus on Family, was founded in Colorado in 1977, so I suspect that had something to do with the attitude shift. Unfortunately, it still exists today, promoting conversion theory, arguing gay people are pedophiles, and sellings its brand through, among other things, Chick-fil-A kids' meal toys.

"Fight for your country" is kind of an ambiguous term. Like, there's the American sense of "get sent overseas to invade other countries and that... protects our 'freedom' somehow" contrasted with "fight if someone actually invades my country."

"Fight for your country" is too unspecific. Aggressors use it, too, which (I hope) is one of the reasons Germany is mostly coloured in blue - the last time we "shot back" (Hitler's manufactured fig leaf for invading Poland) millions died. Of course the Finnish (or Polish, or...) perspective is completely different.

No surprise in Germany, any sort of national pride gets crushed with "our history" and how bad we all should feel - don't get me wrong, horrible stuff but that was nearly 80 years ago and the majority living today wasn't even involved. Besides, does this mean in general or when it comes to defending said country?

The last time this map was on here, it got torn to shreds about its sheer inaccuracy. It doesn't classify most actual castles as castles, especially in the UK and Spain, but it does count palaces and chateaux (which includes mansions and large stately homes in France only). I live a five minute walk from an actual bloody castle and it is not on this.

Not significant, just interesting. If you know more about the countries, it all makes sense: the eastern countries are more traditional, into early marriage and therefore into early pregnancies. The western countries are more modern, women focussing on their education, no pressure from society to marry a man and get a child. It can also be data refering to people's income or social safety such as a pension-system.

School Shootings In Europe Since 2010

School Shootings In Europe Since 2010

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

There has been one school shooting in UK history. Google Dunblane shooting. An adult man went into a primary school and shot five year old children and their teacher. British people, including those that owned hand guns for legitimate reasons, were so horrified, and also so concerned about 'becoming like America' that gun laws were tightened considerably. I know gun owners that willingly handed in their guns during the gun amnesty because to them five year old children not being shot in the face was more important than their right to own a gun. And we have had no school shootings since. Yes of course we have problems with violence, and with disaffected youth, but nothing matches the deaths that can be caused in moments by someone with a gun. School stabbings happen (and that is horrible and needs to be properly addressed) but they are only one person attacked.

I remember dunblane happening and the massive changes to schools in Scotland after it, all the outside doors were then locked once class started and you had to announce why you were there, who you were etc before being allowed to enter - before that all the doors were open all day. It happened the year my sister was due to start school - happened in March, by time she went in august all the doors had entry systems installed. So many changes happened as a result of it happening once, but in the US it's a regular thing yet nothing is ever done but "thoughts and prayers" - what use is that?

Just to note the map counts 0 shootings 1 shooting 2 shootings 6 shootings. Russia also is way bigger than this map. And compared to USA this is nothing as six shootings probably happened this month. The map above is for last 10+ years. Also to note Estonia had one school shooting, it was such a shock to everyone that we really didn't know what to do. But I was 12 when I had classes inside the schools shooting range. Great class, many children learn in school. It's part of PE class, whatever you call sport where you ski and must shoot target.

Here in Wales we still award by letter. A* being the highest achievable grade and U meaning unclassified or a fail.

Italy: 1-10 is used from elementary to high school. 0-100 is used for the final high school diploma. 0-30 is for university exams with 0-110 for the final degree. When I was a kid in elementary and middle school we had no numerical system but an "adjectives" system: insufficiente (insufficient), sufficiente, buono (good), distinto (almost excellent), ottimo (excellent).

I live in France, here we grade students homeworks, tests etc out of 20 so 10 is the middle which before uni is considered bad but then in university it's like "I made it, I won't fail the class" ^o^. Usually in middle and high school parents would be happy with grades above 12. If that can help to understand :). To me our system makes sense and is easy to understand but I can't really understand other countries' systems!

i worked in nuclear refinment. it not that green: there are a lot of very polluting chemical used to process raw uranium into usable one, and a lot of greenhouse gases are created during the process, especially because of the transports and infrastructure. And i'm noteven talking about the inequal policies and deals used to secure the flow of raw Uranium. Nuclear seemed like a good idea at the time but now i think we should just cut our losses and use real renewable energy.

Nuclear energy is technically "green" in the sense that it doesn't produce carbon emissions, but we just bury the other, non-carbon wastes into the earth to "figure out later". Hopefully nuclear fusion will be discovered later (which doesn't produce much radioactive waste) which produce way more energy.

Nuclear power plants are outdated by the times they're built, so they're sort of pointless, IMO. Build one by 2020 standards, and by tthe time it's finished in 2050, you have a nuke plant that... doesn't meet standards.

If you have no idea what to do with the waste it's not Green energy. An just because it glows green in comic books; doesn't make it green energy.

That’s not the Isle of Wight that’s black on the Great Britain map. It’s the Isle of Man. The Isle of Wight is off the southern coast of England and comes under the jurisdiction of the British government, whereas the Isle of Man is self governing, hence only being coloured in on the map of the whole British isles.

So quick sample, Johannesburg, south africa: suburbs all have fibre, around 100Mbps. Universities typically have 20-100 GBps. Square Kilometer Array in the karoo desert has 4 TBps. Yes, you read that right. Four Terabits per second. My own 5G on my cellphone hits about 150 Mbps. Cost per month is ZAR 200 or USD 13/month.

The fun thing of A4 (or any A-size) is that if you fold it in half, the proportions remain the same. So A5 is exactly half the size of A4, but the proportions are still 1 to √2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Index Flawed democracies are nations where elections are fair and free and basic civil liberties are honoured but may have issues (e.g. media freedom infringement and minor suppression of political opposition and critics). These nations have significant faults in other democratic aspects, including underdeveloped political culture, low levels of participation in politics, and issues in the functioning of governance.

Turkana and Masai hunters have been, since prehistoric times, long distance hunters: they wound prey and then chase it down. It was crucial to get to the wounded prey before other predators while at the same time not expending too much energy. Those that could, literally put meat on the table, survived and procreated. If you see these people they are long and lean and amazing runners and their genes have spread within the region. It is an example of natural selection. This can also be seen in the Inuit who are generally short and stout to conserve energy and heat. Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, this is not evidence of different races: it is evidence of environmental pressures on human evolution. There are no races of humans, there are only humans and there are genetic variations within humans that are concentrated in different locations because of environmental pressures (as mentioned above) and because of minimal or only recent communication between populations.

... aside from the name, there wasn't much communism about it anyway. I remember having read "Das Kapital", and nowhere was even the slightest implication of spying on people or restricting any of their freedoms in order to remain communist, but rather, it was originally meant to be a means of gaining freedom that was taken away by the capitalists ... it was not primarily about THEM taking freedom away, but about FREEDOM being taken away. No nation ever got Marx right and into practice, and even if ... anyway, education resulting in beliefs or lack thereof usually is something positive, while punishment and unquestionables in order to uniform peoples' beliefs never result in any good.

This is almost a map of what areas converted to Lutheran in the 16th century. If the ruler of a region converted, everyone did. People tend to hold the same religious affiliation as their parents, so the Protestant or Catholic areas pretty much stayed that way.

Not sure what under broad social grounds refers to but I don't think anyone requesting an abortion would be turned away in the uk - they do ask you to see a different doctor before going ahead with it - think you need two to sign off on it but it's more a formality than anything - rules may have changed as last I ever looked into it was over a decade ago, but doubt it would be made harder to get one in that time.

I'm not sure what level of proficiency this is being measured by as in the UK we have learnt at least one foreign language in school for decades, but not sufficiently well to be fluent in it. We start too late and don't go deep enough, but it is unfair to think that we don't actually learn any foreign languages.

    Tiny Dynamine
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Our problem in the UK is that we have the international language, so it's actually quite hard to say what other language we should learn. It's essentially down to individual preference or if your job needs you to speak another. E.g. German? Only really useful in 3 countries. French? A few more. Spanish? One in Europe, lots that are far away. We're at a loss when it comes to the general public.

In Estonia it's quite common to speak more than 2 foreign language, especially now with technology and internet being available. My grandad said : speaking and understanding language can save lives. You speak the language of your father's land, language of your enemy and language of your friends. Sort of like Keep enemies closer. We learn 2+ language by age of 11, in some schools you can choose to be in language group and they come out knowing 3-5 languages. It's quite common to have people ready to be speak in English or Finnish or russian, due to tourism and our history. We go to school at age of 7, depending on your class direction you either start with English in grade 1 or grade 3. I started in grade 3, as I was in class with more art and music (need to feed talents), but by grade 5 everyone studies English plus one more language (russian, German, Spanish, Finnish) In Ireland language classes are useless, two years of French, and I learned nothing...

I've had formal education in four languages, not counting Greek and Latin, and speak a fifth (regional) language with my family. And that's nothing exceptional in Europe. Wish I knew some Italian, though, it's a beautiful language. I can order in a restaurant, but that's it.

We have 95% bc out schools teach English as a first foreign language since 1st .grade. And in 4th grade there is an option for 2nd foreign language, mostli german, italian or french. And second reason - most of out economy is based on tourism, so a lot of people are fluent in English at least.

It's not all lost. Indigenous languages are still very common in Mexico. (My mother-in-law's first language is an Indigenous Mexican language. She later learned Spanish and English, but if she's not traveling, she speaks exclusively Mixtec.) Mexico has 68 national languages, and there's a law that requires the government to offer services in people's native tongues, though that's still a work in progress. Still, people are largely in support of preserving the Indigenous language. It's important that, with globalization, we all continue to embrace them.

Yes, I noticed it when I flew to Kenya, many years ago, we'd hardly taken off when the pilot said "look out of the right windows, and you can see the lights of Dublin". About five or ten minutes latter he said "Look out of the left, and you can just see the Eifel Tower in the centre of Paris" . . . and I'm thinking (with a world map in the flight magazine) 'Humm, we'll be there in an hour or so!' . . . EIGHT HOURS LATER . . . puffy-legs and a stiff neck; we land!

I understand why the Mercator Projection effects the widths of things the closer the the poles, but I don’t understand why the height of things change as we move towards the poles,

That's a good point. I'm only guessing the height is extended proportionally to the width, to compensate for geometric distortion of the shape of the area, as seen from the perpendicular angle above the globe. Needs further investigation.

Don't you understand data? MEDIAN. not "mike wheeler fan's dad". The graph is not of YOU or YOUR family, it is MEDIAN. AVERAGE. It's also not EARNINGS, it is NETT WORTH, meaning if a person died how much money do they leave behind? NOT how much they earn per annum. For example, I make about 100k per annum BUT my nett worth is about zero because my assets and liabilities cancel out. I am assuming you are in high school still? If so, sorry for being sarcastic.

The Netherlands hardly get any snow, and still scored sixth overall: all in skating. There is A LOT of surface water in the Netherlands. Which doesn't freeze any longer, what with global warming, but that doesn't stop the Dutch from being obsessed with speed skating. It's not unusual for gold, silver and bronze to be all Dutch.

I mean, you gave a gun in the house, someone pisses you the f**k off so you see red, grab the gun and shoot - all on impulse. If you didn't have said gun would you have killed the person? I'm fascinated by CAR, Congo and Gambia, I'd imagine they'd be similar to Rwanda, since they're next door. I imagine its probably got to do with ineffective prosecution/policing, because really they are much poorer than ZA so there's no way they don't have lots of people doing dodgy stuff to stay alive. Rwanda I totally get it, those guys are organised.

Not true. Permitted in Poland when the mother's life is in danger, or when the woman has been raped, or in conception through incest. However, this is purely theoretical. We've had two infamous cases of women dying due to complications from intrauterine death of the foetus because the doctors were afraid of legal consequences that might have arisen had they carried out the procedure. This law and the pathology it breeds is revolting.

In 2019, 84.8% of England and Wales’ population identified their ethnicity as White, decreasing by 1.2 percentage points since the 2011 Census. The results of the 2021 census have yet to be published but it is expected to follow the same trend. However, in the UK Ethnicity is what a person 'Feels' they are. As an Irishman, I put 'white Irish' but I could have easily just ticked 'White' or 'mixed' because my father was abandoned as a baby and we don't know his heritage.

Honestly, there's so much complaint about immigrants making their way to the US from these countries, but when the instability has been caused by America causing the overthrow of democratically elected governments that weren't serving American commercial purposes this is what happens. And I would also point out that European countries have no place complaining about immigrants from countries that were previously their own colony. Your country is richer, has better infrastructure, and is easier to live in off the back of what you took from your colonies. It's only fair.

Because "incest" refers to sex between relatives in general, and not only to kids, as most people think. So two 50 year old brothers having a go at each other with full mutual consent, is still called incest.

Hmmmm, well, I guess if they're consenting adults, not in positions of power over each other, and hopefully not making babies, okay. I admit, it's so taboo in my culture, I have a hard time thinking about it rationally, but I know different places have different customs.

    Vicky Zar

Exactly. I'm from Germany. It is legal for same sex couples, because they cannot produce babies, which is the whole point of it being or not being illegal in the first place. But of course this is only under the assumption of both partners being of the age of consent and not dependent off each other (like Father and child). Personally, I would not have a problem with not same sex couples, if one could guarantee no offspring.

Possum pie isn't what you would think - it's a layered pie where the bottom is like cheesecake, the top is like a chocolate meringue pie. I think we call it that because it grosses people out, so there's more left for us. And anyway, fried pies are way more popular.

ok so for those who wanted to know. Apparently Akutaq is berry or MEAT ice cream. EW. Meat-based varieties, which use dried fish or ground caribou, often taste salty and gamey, while berry-based versions (salmonberries and blueberries are favorites) have a sweet, yet briny flavor from the seal oil. Akutuq is an undeniably Alaskan dish, with variations dictated by local flora and fauna.

"most popular" does not give an indication as to the amount of meat eaten. 100% of pork of 10kg meat per person and year is likely less cancer/heart attack-resulting than 40% of pork at 100kg meat per person and year...

'Biggest penises' could be an anatomical claim or an outright insult on the population

I personally like “least likely to collide with a deer” for Hawaii. Do they even have deer there? And if not, they must not be very good at anything else for that to be the skill put on the map.

The original reddit post had a button to switch between the two maps. You can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/scqe6g/asias_quest_to_eradicating_extreme_poverty_1981/ (or by clicking on the "CelebrationDirect924" link on the lower left hand corner of the map above)

” The nation of Finland has never been an independent sovereign monarchy: no attempt to establish a fully-fledged Finnish monarchy has been successful. When it finally became established as a modern independent nation-state, it was – despite a very brief flirtation with monarchy – in the form of a republic.”

Nobody calls Brussel "BX" in Belgium... Maybe "BXL" for the french speaking, but even so, it's marginal at best.

"The Pale" refers only to Dublin and ... Other British Capitals are known as The Smoke, The Burg and The Diff. Among other things which will only be asterisked out here.

Assuming you're American, why not Mexico and Cuba? On the plus side, the New Zealanders will be happy not to be left out once more.
