Ugh, school, am I right? Nah, just kidding, school’s pretty awesome. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I know that I’m wearing rose-colored goggles, but I also genuinely believe that our school days are objectively pretty darn good, overall. Well, except for a few… minor complications when it comes to rules.
You see, schools are like a microcosm of society: they’re full of some really cool stuff that is, unfortunately, balanced out by some rules and regulations that are absolute BS. Just how much BS are we talking about? As it turns out, cartloads of it. And it stinks to high heaven. One redditor proved this to the internet after asking their fellow users to share the dumbest rules their schools have ever enforced.

Toilet paper rationing. This was in 1997/98, btw. Apparently the high school girls room was going through too much toilet paper so the dean, a woman, stood outside the door and distributed a few squares of 1-ply institutional toilet paper to us as we went in. If she noticed toilet paper on the floor, our ration got cut down. If we asked for more for...bigger jobs...we were told to saved it for home.
There were several episodes of girls stuck in stalls until friends could beg for more TP because of period messes or unexpected bowel incidents. The dean wouldn't even hand it over--she would go in the bathroom and pass it a few squares at a time over the door. If you didn't catch it as it fell and it landed on the floor, well, that's your fault and you're not getting more. If you used more than she thought necessary, tough luck, go to class with blood/sh*t on your body.
It took about a week of extremely angry parents coming to the school and calling both the school and the school board, but we finally got our toilet paper back, unlimited.
How did we celebrate?

Child abuse, poor child care, health and safety violations, sexual deviancy (why else would someone take pleasure in little girls suffering when it comes to bodily functions), Health and hygiene violations and that's before they go into abuse of power issues and possible grooming/forced BDSM actions against the dean

Rule: No duct tape ON clothing.
Reason: Some girls thought they could get past the "no ripped jeans" rule by covering the tears with duct tape. It became a "fad" and everyone started doing it so it got banned. A kid in my AP literature class found a loophole and MADE an entire outfit out of red and black duct tape. I mean Shorts, A TShirt AND a jacket and SHOES. When the school tried to suspend him they couldn't because the rule Was " No Duct Tape ON clothes" It said nothing about clothes made OUT OF duct tape... He won the argument and even wore the outfit a few more times to Say "F***k you " to the school and principles lol .

I wasn’t allowed to test my blood sugar in class (type 1 diabetic). Some teachers didn’t care but most made a fuss about it. “Go to the nurses office if you need to do that, it’s a distraction to everybody and other students might get freaked out by the needles” even though it was just a little prick that nobody could ever even see, and none of my classmates ever complained.
Told my parents about the rule, my dad got furious and told me to do it anyways, and that I have absolutely nothing to worry about as far as getting in trouble at home goes. So to me, this was free reign to stick it to the f**kers at school. I tested every class, more than I needed to, just to spite them. Eventually I got sent to the office and my principal called my dad. Dad showed up, and I’ve barely ever seen him as furious as he was that day. He was cursing, yelling, tearing papers off of walls.
I was never, ever, ever bothered about it again.

Couldn't agree more. If people are so precious they can't cope they're the ones who need to get sent to the school nurse. It would probably help people with needle fears seeing others using them so normally - not that there is anything to see particularly with this test.

A girl at my daughters school had this problem with just one teacher, and they used the excuse that she was upsetting the others. It blew up in their faces when one kid pulled out a book and started taking bets on what her readings would be for that blood sugar test. The teacher complained about it to the head mistress of the school and the teacher was VERY firmly put in her place before being 'let go' at the end of the school year

When I was in high school, a million years ago, we were allowed to carry our own aspirin (there was no tylenol, motrin, etc). We could have midol, tums, etc. anything over the counter was fine. Now, kids can't have anything, and it's nonsense. Do they honestly think a kid is going to OD from tylenol in the middle of school? Maybe if they paid attention to which kids seem to be troubled rather than take away their pain relief, this wouldn't be such an issue.

My highschool had "coordinates", not a uniform. But they stopped selling the shorts like a decade before I started there... So me and a bunch of buddies tracked down used pairs and started wearing them. Next year, shorts were banned outright... So me and a bunch of buddies on the rugby team started wearing skirts, because the rules said skirts were acceptable, but didn't specify gender. So you had a bunch of guys with hairy, hairy legs walking around in skirts we deliberately hiked up a little to show some thigh. Shorts were allowed again in a week.

Every year as the summer months approach, I consider this myself. I'd like to go bare-legged when it's hot! If women get to wear skirts and bare legs without nylons then men should too! I just might do it this year.

My catholic school also baned women from wearing any kind of shorts (anything that even showed the ankle wasnt allowed). Apparently teenager boys can show their legs but girls couldnt "because its sinful".

I got Saturday school for missing a day of classes when I was 16. Seems reasonable, except I missed to go complete my US citizenship and officially become a citizen alongside my mom (it took us 12 years to go through the legal process, btw. Whole other issue). I had a note from my mother as well as a signed official Federal form they give you to explain to school/employers why you were absent. Apparently the only acceptable absence excuse was illness. I got punished for becoming a citizen

That is so messed up. Especially if they don’t let them go to the restroom during class. That happened to a girl in my class freshman year of HS, the teacher wouldn’t let her go even after she told him it was woman problems, she ended up bleeding on the seat. They were metal chairs though, but she was so embarrassed I felt so bad for her.

But! And there’s a big ‘but’ here! Not all rules are created equal. Not by a longshot. They have to be fair. They have to make life easier. They have to make sense. And some ‘rules’ fail on all counts, making us ask, why the ever-loving-frick they even exist at all if they only work to make everything more difficult. Can’t the teachers realize that they don’t make any sense??!?
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as creating the perfect set of rules. It’s just not doable. However, this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t attempt to make life better for students and teachers alike. Perfection is a process. A process of constant growth and improvement. And that means letting some rules go the way of the dodo. Though, that’s a bit unfair to the dodo—I’d pick the bird any day of the week over most of the rules featured in this list.

My first job as a teacher was at a Catholic high school for three weeks. It had different staircases *and floors* from boys and girls. I had to start every class with the Lord's prayer and end it with the Hail Mary. Then the principal "suggested" me failing a student because his parents were divorcing, and he would "set an example of immoral family values". The kid was having a rough patch in the divorce and his grades were down, but the school wanted a "legitimate" reason to expell him and avoid legal consequences. I refused. The following day I was told my "trial period" had ended and was dismissed. Later found out the school was sued before the Human Rights Commission for expelling two kids for the same reason...

My primary school had two different entrances, one had 'boys' above it. We didnt use it that was but when it was built (late 1800s) it was used, until probably 1960s or 1970s. In high school we had a one way system so you could only go up certain stairs and down ones at the other end of the corridor. Was so annoying if you realised you had forgot something!

I bet you 100% this is not in a western country. This is actually quite common in India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It's a thing of "you don't need to do anything involving the opposite sex so what need have you to interact?" Doesn't mean that it is right, but it's not unusual for SE Asian countries.

We suddenly one day weren’t allowed to stand in circles during recess because, and I quote “we could be dealing drugs.” I will add that for the years prior we had been standing in circles no problem.
Next recess, we stood in a triangle, cue principle going apes**t. Next day we stood in a square, principle kept us inside for a week. And threatened us all with detentions if we did it again etc.
I believe their idea was open ended circles so they could see what we were doing. Still stupid.

I got a suspension for holding a stick. The phone call with my mom went something like this (only slightly dramatized):
School: Mrs. TheQueq, your son has been suspended.
Mom: Oh my goodness, what did he do?
S: He was holding a stick.
M: Did he hit someone with it?
S: No. He was just holding it.
M: ...Did he threaten to hit someone with it?
S: No, just held it.
M: Did he refuse to put it down when you asked?
S: No, no, he was very cooperative.
M: So... what did he do wrong?

M: And I should be upset about that?

My six year old stepdaughter got sent home for having Tums. My husband and her mother had just recently divorced and the poor little mite was taking it tough, and had stomach issues. Got a WEEK's suspension. At 6. For Tums. This was "zero tolerance", or as I called it, administrators and teachers too lazy to actually think the situation out.

Here in Japan my wife had to call two girls' parents because they had traded (not read) manga between classes, and told the parents that they needed to come in for a parent-teacher meeting about it. One of the girls' mom was incredibly apologetic and said, "Of course." The other said, "What? What's this crazy s*** you're talking about? No, I'm not doing that," and hung up on her. I love my wife, but I definitely sided with that second mom.

Rules (and their consequences) have to be communicated very clearly, they have to be enforced consistently, and they must be timely. However, at the core of our need for rules is the fact that they’re supposed to solve a specific problem that we have. If instead they create additional chaos, demotivate students and teachers alike, and make people wonder why they’re in place at all, they’re awful rules. Get rid of them.
What’s more, rules can’t be created in a metaphorical bubble. The people who will be affected the most ought to at least have a say because they might notice some glaring flaws that would otherwise be ignored.

Early 2000s our school banned mp3 players with the reasoning, they would make us anti social.
As protest, we blocked the access to the teacher's lounge by silently stand there reading books and shush-ing every Teacher trying to get past, while also making a petition to include books in the ban, since obviously they too made us anti social.

"Zero Tolerance"
Just means that if someone starts a fight with you, you fight back as hard as you can. You're going to get suspended for defending yourself anyway, might as well make it worthwhile.

Final year of junior school there was a boy who was bigger than all the others. He decided to repeatedly beat up on my nephew. Had done this with other kids. Go to the school about it repeatedly. School goes to the kid's parents repeatedly. Nothing changed. One day at recess this kid literally picked my nephew up and slammed him onto the concrete. Luckily he was not severely injured. Solution? My nephew's dad called this kid's dad and said "Through all of this our son has never defended himself because engaging in fighting is not his way. The other reason is, because even though he's 12, he has a 2nd Degree Redbelt in Karate. He is NOT ALLOWED TO USE IT. However, consider yourself warned. If your kid touches him again, we have given him permission to do so in SELF DEFENCE. He can take one short, but very powerful punch to your kid's nose and flatten it. He touches my son again, he will defend himself". Never bothered him again. BTW, Blackbelt just before age 14!

Wow, what self-restraint. Sounds like a great kid. I too, was bullied by a particularly unpleasant kid. I was a tiny, little girl, and this was a boy, much bigger. Back then (this was the late 60's early 70's).we had big families (we had 5 kids - this family had 7) and just about each kid in my family was bullied by one of these kids. The school never did anything, so my mother decided to go talk to their mother. The woman answered the door and had a shiner or both eyes. She knew there and then she couldn't, wouldn't to anything. So the other neighborhood dads got together and had "a discussion" with the "man of family". No one was ever bothered again, and my mom never saw her with any bruises again.

Girls MUST have a male escort them to prom as their date. If your date bails, you can't enter.
We were an all girls school. Many of us had zero guy friends. Finding dates was hard. I remember one year a girl's boyfriend dumped her when everyone was starting to show up for photos. She showed up at the venue, mascara running, begging the principal to let her go in. Principal wouldn't let her. One of the senior homeroom teachers ended up calling her nephew and said, "I need you to put on your suit and get here ASAP." He showed up with flowers and everything. So like... it was salvageable but totally avoidable.
The worst part? It wasn't always a rule until one year a group of girls went as friends and kept "stealing" other people's dates. Way to punish everyone forever because of one group of bi**hes.

At my school, you can be denied entry into prom if a girl's outfit is too "masculine" or a boy's outfit is too "feminine". Even if your outfit isn't inappropriate or anything.

UK school leaving 'prom' (we don't call it that) sounds so much less stressful. Nobody even bothers with a date, unless they are already dating. Most people just go like it's a regular party.

At my school, the graduation party rules were decided by a committee of students. One year, it was couples only, dinner and dance, dressed to the nines - and too expensive for most students. Less than 20 tickets sold, so cancelled. The next year, it was a dance with dessert buffet (affordable to most students), no partner needed, semi-formal wear (no jeans, but tie not needed). It was very well-attended.

This is the stupidest rule ever. The teachers are basically enforcing the idea that girls need a guy on these girls.
Furthermore, you can’t expect rules to be perfect the moment you make them. They have to be improved and adapted over time. Yes, it’s difficult, exhausting, and everyone would rather just get on with it, but on the other hand, the rules we live by form the foundations of our lives. We deserve rock-solid foundations, not fractured ones.
Don’t hold on to a rule, regulation, or school-life structure just because you’ve gotten used to it and because it’s been the way things have always been done. Think about better alternatives. Adapt, otherwise what you’ll end up with is a bunch of rules that people remember not because of how awesome they sounded on paper but because of how incredibly dumb and flawed they were in reality.

In high school, the supervisor told the prefects and head girls to break up girls hugging in the hallways .I went to an only girls school and teachers discouraged girls from hugging each other. Apparently they thought that it encouraged 'lesbianism'. smh.

First of all, lesbianism is perfectly normal and should be treated that way. Second of all, girls hugging doesn't always mean their lesbians. I am sick and tired of people thinking that any two people showing affection means that they're together. Affection is normal in every relationship.

As a student at an all-girls school...about a third of my class is bi or lesbian and I'm not saying this to be rude but we're all horny teenagers and girls are hot. Literally, yesterday we were watching the movie Tangled during study hall and the chat was all about how Mother Gothel is hot and how that point when Rapunzel has Flynn hostage could turn into porn.

Skirt had to be a certain length. That's not the dumb part. If a teacher thought it was too short you had to KNEEL SO THEY COULD SEE WHERE THE HEM CAME TO ON YOUR LEGS. Was this a Christian private school where old male teachers were making middle school girls kneel on the floor to check their skirt length? Why, yes it was. I never wore skirts, so I was spared, but God, I hated that school.

This was actually still happening in some UK schools even in the mid 1990s. I saw it. To get around it girls would roll the waistband of their skirts so they could lower them when spot-checks were made. Terrifying to think this was acceptable within my lifetime and I'm a millennial.

My mother went to high school in the 40's. The style was big oversized sweaters, skirts (above the knee, shocking) and scuffed up saddle shoes. Interesting technical point: traditionally the correct length for a kilt is so that when you kneel down it touches the ground around you, so that it will block the draft and keep you warm but not soak up the water (this *is* Scotland, the ground is *always* wet ;-) I'm not sure how you are supposed to keep your knees warm but maybe if you're hard enough to wear a kilt in public you can cope with cold knees!

Locked the only boys bathroom because someone wrote on the wall in sharpie. It wasn't even anything rude or inappropriate either. It was just the word "hi" or something like that.

No coloured bras. I went to an all-girls school and we wore uniforms and the top was a light colour and very see-through for some reason (so it was easy to tell if you had a pink bra on for example). The weird thing was it was always the male teachers who called students out for breaking this rule.... yikes

Um yeah, I grew up with this rule too. I started wearing bras at 10 and I was the only one in the class at that young age that needed one. It was humiliating to get thrown out of class because my bra strap was showing. The teacher could have just said pointed to my shoulder and I would have fixed it. Instead, I was called out in front of everyone and sent to the principal's office where I was berated and further humiliated for needing a bra at a young age.

At least if staying close to the original direction of thought, I personally think generalising and splitting people by their sex (which has nothing to do with their gender, but that's another story) is plain stupid.

I didn't go to an all girls or even a Catholic school and I still saw a teacher give a girl detention for a bright bra. Admittedly, I don't know why they chose to wear a bright orange bra under a white shirt anyway. This was our year 8 coordinator and she was very strict on the uniform though. She tried to give me a detention because my socks were the wrong length but it was when I just started there so didn't know. We had to either wear knee high socks or ankle socks (about 2-3 cm above ankle). I had worn anklet/sport socks so they were too short. After that I wore socks that were about halfway up my calf but rolled shorter and that was fine for the rest of my time at school.

I spent 2 years in a private christian school where girls could not wear skirts or dresses unless it covered their whole legs all the way down to their feet. We were between 3 and 8 years old and that rule was meant to make sure boys wouldn't have any sexual temptation. This is not a joke.

Our -female- teacher told her that she looked like a whore and forbad her to come back dressed like this. When I was at school the smell of rebellion was overpowering. We had a rule where if we were in school uniform outside the school grounds then we had to look immaculate. Clean shiny shoes, straight tie, blazer fastened, shirt tucked in etc. There was another rule that if you were not wearing full uniform you had to go home and change into your uniform. One kid combined both rules and at the end of the day would nip into a boys toilets, change into jeans, T-shirt and trainers (sneakers) and carefully fold and pack his uniform into his school bag. He would then set off grinning at the teachers knowing that he knew they were p*ssed because they couldn't touch him for it. What were they going to do? Send him home? At home time?

‘No ripped jeans’ They enforced it to the point that when I fell in school, scrapped me knee and ended up needing stitches (obviously ripping my jeans in the process). They still dragged me to the office to suspend me for the day because me jeans were ripped. I was left there, stitched up, blood drying on my jeans as the vice principal yelled at me that my outfit was “inappropriate”. Add on: I went to a private school outside of the US, we had a doctor on call so he stitched me up at school, notified my parents and gave the okay on me going back to class. The vp didn’t notify my parents I was getting suspended for the day until after I went home and told them myself.

In grade school, we weren't allowed to play on the playground equipment when it snowed. Eventually, were weren't allowed to play with snow or even go near it- I got in trouble for sitting in snow.
This was in Minnesota where it snows half the year. Recess basically consisted of milling around the blacktop for thirty minutes.

teacher here. In ontario, canada, we have to close our playground equipment when there is snow on the ground. (a solid 4-6 months) we were told that the playground equipment is designed for safety. and when there is snow on the ground the measurements for safely falling off or stepping off or sliding etc where all off. They hadn't been tested for safety with a build up of snow under the equipment, so don't use it. basically, it comes down to 'can we be sued for this?"

Came here to say this! Exactly. It has to do with liability. We get a community icerink in our school yard every year, and the kids can't use it because they need to have proper helmets. When I was in school, we would walk 20 mins to a public rink, no one had helmets. And if you didn't have skates you just watched, or sat back with another class.

I was in agreement with this rule (snow can be slippery on equipment, increased injuries; snow melts and then you end up with a bunch of kids sitting in damp, cold clothing for the rest of the day) until you mentioned where and the fact it snows 50% of the time - so I'm thinking they should have known this and come up with another alternative for breaktimes - a covered area for running about with specific equipment (hula hoops?)

We have our football field (fenced in) opened and supervised as a snowball fight space if it snowed (and, what sadly happens quite often where I live, the snow hadn't turned to ice). I always thought it was a neat rule, it allowed kids that wanted to snowball fights, but also made sure random kids learning for their tests didn't have their books dunked in snow (usually).

Girls were not allowed to wear cycling shorts under their PE skirts. They wanted us to wear these dark green PE pants, basically just underwear and it was gross. My year protested, we said shorts or nothing and they backed off. This was 20+ years ago and it's totally different now, girls wear what they want for PE.

I outright refused every PE lesson and wore shorts. Used to get in trouble but I’d reason with whoever, would you rather me miss every PE lesson? Or wear shorts and no one notice? It’s so degrading making young girls wear those, so revealing. One particular professor at my university would lock the door a minute after class began. If you had to leave to go to the bathroom, you couldn't get back in.

We have classrooms that have these hotelroom locks. You can only open it from the outside with a staff pass (it opens normally from the inside). If a student needs to go out for a moment for whatever reason, I need to leave the door open or they can't come back in. I usually teach with the door open anyway, but there are times when it's preferable to close the door. And with these classrooms I just feel I can't. I hate them. What's wrong with a simple key? -- Also, I've locked myself out more than once, because I'd left my pass on the desk. With a key you can just go back in because you couldn't lock the door, but with these rooms I need to find someone to let me in to grab my pass. Grrr ...

I have a teacher like this!!! Online school, however (Zoom). My teacher would hit "enable waiting room" where the host has to individually let students in. I usually enter Zoom meetings 1 minute before the class starts, so the first class with this teacher, I expected nothing to go wrong. However... at 8:59 am, I was locked out. Of a 9:00 am class. I finished a book waiting, looking at that screen, "The meeting host will let you in soon". Yeah, not soon at all. He would expect you to log on to the Zoom AT 8:50 AM EVERY TIME. Unlucky students would get locked out for 30 minutes... he even called them out when he let them in. The teacher says he did this when there was in-person lessons too... must have been a nightmare for people who always woke up late. What a dumb rule.

I used to know someone who went to boarding school. There were also day students and ones that went home every weekend if they didn't live too far away. This dude lived 45 minutes away but he boarded full time. He didn't even go home at weekends, only for school holidays. This was before I knew him. I've never met his parents and I don't really want to. Based on that they sound horrid.

Moved to Florida with two blue-eyed red-headed children. On the first day of school, my children were greeted by teachers telling them to remove their sunglasses and ball caps. When I asked the rationale for the sunglass/ball cap ban I was told that gang members wore them. This was at an elementary school. I snarkily asked if only gang members wore sunglasses and ballcaps in Florida. Needless to say, my children continued to wear sun protection and the school ignored the daily infractions.

I would have lost my s**t if they tried to ban watches at my school, I've worn a watch every day since I was about 9! The bracelet thing though my school did the same, it was these particular rubber bracelets that were a fad for a while, and they were banned more cos of the trading and disruptions they caused than anything to do with sex.

Elementary school principal banned talking at lunch. If you were caught talking or even signing to someone, you had to go sit by yourself on a folding chair with no table. There was once my mom came to eat lunch with my older sister and I. The principal was like " Oh you should go eat out in the hallway with your daughters" and she was like "nah, I'm gonna sit here with my daughter and her friends and talk to them and enjoy their presence" (usually if a parent came for lunch the student could invite one friend to join, unless you had siblings. Then it was too many people so you couldn't invite a friend). Anyway, one of my older sister's friends whispered to my mom that she was going to move so she wouldn't get in trouble for talking. THIS WAS A NINE YEAR OLD.

Having been a teacher, I can kind of see where this came from. Some of the smaller kids get so easily distracted during mealtimes, they end up not eating enough. I frequently had to remind kids to eat and drink during breakfast break, because they forget all about their food and drink while playing and then were hungry and thirsty in class later on.

The only other reason I can think is so they could monitor how many students went to the restroom during the day. All of these ideas are ridiculous though.

It's to prevent incidents from happening with too many students in the bathroom. When I was in school they had to limit bathroom usage because of fights in the bathroom and frequent bomb threats.

Dumbest Rule: Zero tolerance for fighting. This meant both the kid who started the fight AND the kid who got beat on were both suspended. If the kid who got beat on just took it, he was just sent home for the rest of the day. If he dared to fight back, he was suspended for a week just like the kid who started the fight. Here's the truly stupid part: The school administrators couldn't explain how this led to MORE BRUTAL fights.

My parents filed a civil suit against the school district and 6 employees including the principal after my brother was suspended for being beaten up. They failed to protect him from physical harm and gave him no recourse to protect himself that didn’t include punitive damage to his school record and potential college acceptance. Because the victim of violence has no way to protect themselves the school, teachers, administrators were found culpable for the violence by the judge. It took them several years to pay out, but the district lost big time.

in the early 2000's I was sitting in the principals office after a call that my son, who was in second grade, was being suspended for fighting. He had defended himself and the principal cited the "Zero tolerance" policy and he was not allowed to fight back. I told him i was proud of my son for defending himself. He did not start the fight and tried to walk away but was followed and attacked by a group of three older boys. I then asked the principal if I were to reach over the desk and proceed to punch him in the face, if he would let me do it until I was too tired to hit him anymore. I followed up by letting him know that every day my son was suspended, I would take him to ice cream and movies. oddly enough, the suspension was lifted. I pulled him out of that school and drove him 30 minutes away every day to a different school district within a few weeks.

My primary school had this wierd obsession with safety. When we played dodgeball the boys had to throw with their non-dominant hand while the girls got to throw full force. And we could get detention for going where the teachers couldn't see us. But the worst rule by far was that we weren't allowed to run on the playground, I'll never forget the time my teacher literally said, "the playground is no place to run."

oh yeah! at my elementary you were ONLY allowed to run on the track. the track was made of the same asphalt as everywhere else. we weren't allowed to play tag either. oh and we had areas that we had to be at during recess, so if your week is four square, that's all you can do. and there were never enough balls.

We chose to advertise Mafia Brand Trench coats, which featured one of us opening the trench coat and having two goons jump out. this is actually realistic. in fourth grade one kid brought in candy canes for the class and some boys in my class licked them into blades and stabbed their friends. two kids ended up bleeding in the nurse, however our school actually did not ban candy canes, yet the banned Shopkins because they are “distracting”

It wasn't really the rule that was dumb but the reason for it. In my last year of high school, the school issued a rule that all students had to wear student IDs. If you didn't, you had to immediately go and pay for another ID. While you can see how many students may have saw this a way to skip class, the reason for this was the school shootings that happened the previous year. The reasoning was that it would be easier to spot who is a student and who is not a student to then see who has malicious intent.....except that most shooters were students....so....

Another reason that I've heard is to easily Id the kids themselves. If it's a medium to large school, I can see some trouble-makers kids giving someone else's name to avoid getting into trouble. Sure, they can ask the accuser to id the kid, but if they couldn't, they had a name and the falsely accused had to try to clear their name. If they were given the chance.

If you were caught on your phone they’d take it until the end of the week. you’d get it back at half 3 on friday. parents went mental and a few even came together and sent bills through for part of the phone bills, they ditched that rule after 2 weeks.

I get taking phones off of kids, but maybe just til the end of the day? Most kids i know have phones for safety reasons - for when they are travelling to and from school or when they go out to meet friends or go to clubs. Keeping the phone for a week means theyre being punished at school and home because they then can't go out. Also, for anyone saying 'why do they take their phones to school, they don't need them'... well, bus tickets here are all done via an app for kids, so they do need their phone to get to and from school.

My nephew's school installed cell jammers to keep the kids from using the phones in the building. This lasted about 3 months until the kids found out and the parents threw a fit. What if there was an emergency? In the time of school shootings, how was anyone to call the police if something happened?

I agree with others who say confiscate to the end of day or class but all week is going too far. I think anything confiscated should be returned at the end of the day. I like the idea of a grid-like shelf or box that the student deposits the phone in as they enter class (maybe even a box in the grid of the seating pattern?). It stays visible the entire time and others have a hard time "accidentally" picking up someone else's. I've seen this work for exams.

I've confiscated many a phone as a campus safety, we gave opportunity to avoid taking it. Our rule was after 2nd warning, teacher could hold the phone till the end of class/day. If a kid refused, they called us which is an automatic parent pick up, but gave another chance for teacher/office to hold it. Still refuse, trip to office where principles gave another chance. Still refused, called the parent to pick up the kid and phone, plus a conference. Sometimes we'd do a phone conference. Idea was to get parents involved in school order. It worked. For those who mentioned the legal issue of confiscating the parents property. Sorry that doesn't work. Most schools have students and parents sign a contract for the school rules and code of conduct. The kicker, in my state principles are legally responsible for students and are legally considered a parent when a parent is not present. So yes, legally they can take your phone and return it to parent.

I don't think this is a bad rule. They recommend putting on work clothes for adults too. It helps get into the right state of mind for school/work, which is harder to do at home than at the actual school/office. You can still wear lounge pants underneath!

A few weird ones and their reasoning behind making them: - Girls weren't allowed to wear tops with spaghetti straps because they could be easily cut with scissors. - No tube tops either, because they could easily be pulled down - No bra straps showing whatsoever, because it was considered indecent - No soft drinks with actual sugar because if it spilled it would make a sticky mess. Diet soft drinks were fine because they wouldn't get as sticky - No beverages of any kind (only in certain classrooms, depending on who the teacher was. Not like, computer labs where it was obvious drinks shouldn't be allowed, I'm talking like...random math or history classes based on who your teacher was, whereas the same class taught by a different teacher, it was allowed), because f**k you if you're thirsty. - No shirts from the company "Billabong" because it says "bong" and that's a drug reference And last but not least, because this one is a really funny one and I'm hoping someone from my class sees this and can confirm: No wearing the Alice in Wonderland joint smoking caterpillar shirts that we designed for homecoming week because that's absolutely not a paintbrush. This one makes sense...no idea how it got approved.

There seem to be a lot of school rules aimed at victim punishing, dunnit? Punish tube tops, not the a-holes that might pull on them, punish spaget. straps not the person trying to cut them, etc. Punish girls in general instead of forcing boys to learn how to behave themselves. What a bunch of BS.

The first few are rather female-targeting. Frankly, women should be proud of their bodies, not ashamed. Also, forcing women to hide the "sexually-stimulating" parts of their bodies due to boys is absolute BS. The problem is the boys. And what are you supposed to do, pretend that breasts don't exist?

Many many years ago when the Simpsons first came out, my school banned Bart Simpson t-shirts that said "Underachiever". It just sent the wrong message to students! So I wore my "I'm Bart Simpson, Who the hell are you" T-shirt instead. ....until they banned that one too.

When I was in Junior school (UK boarding school in the 80's), we were not allowed to say OK as it was considered slang and not befitting the young ladies and gentleman that we should aspire to be.
We also had to have a comb and a hankerchief on us at all times.
On top of that, we weren’t allowed to have our hands in our pockets because, ‘it looks slovenly’.

Forcing kids to be proper is like forcing kids to listen to Queen, Van Halen, and Frank Sinatra. It is an incredibly good thing, but with disregard for what the current generation has to offer. Seriously, while a lot fo music nowadays is bad, their are a lot of good artists out there. While a lot of styles today are weird, a lot of them look really cool. Not all of your music was good. Just listen to "Dee-Dee King's" first album. Warning: this comment is by a kid who is trying to not be biased.

When I was in high school, a friend of mine got around that rule by citing religious reasons. He wasn't even religious, he just liked his hair. Whenever teachers asked him, he would show them the zero tolerance for discrimination rule in the school rule book. The rule lasted one month when several kids started copying him.

My friend's new school headmaster (in a boy's only school) implemented this rule, knowing that the majority of the school population were Sikh. Rule applied to them too, he threatened to cut their hair multiple times. Headmaster stated that it was to "clear up the riff-raff", by which it was found that he meant he was racist and purposely targetting the Sikhs.

You could only go to the bathroom twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Mind you this is from 8-3 and you had to get a new pass every week and keep it the whole time or you couldn’t use the bathroom.

Conservative Christian College. A group of us played Age of Empires one weekend. They didn’t like it and called a meeting. Everyone involved got misdemeanors on their records. There was nothing in the handbook about it being against the rules. The only person that didn’t get any punishment was the son of the president even though he was just as involved as the rest of us. Was quite interesting explaining the write up on my record when I transferred. “You got a misdemeanor for what?!”

The dumbest one I suffered was in the early 90s my junior high banned all jackets and jacket like clothing in class because there was a story about how some kids in an inner city school had brought guns to class in Starter jackets. Keep in mind that my junior high school was in a medium sized college town, not anywhere with an actual “gang” problem. The school also had a terrible climate control system and was always cold. The rule was really absurd, you couldn’t wear jackets or hoodies but pullover hood less sweatshirts were ok, as were sweaters. The rule was finally revoked after we had a fire alarm incident in the middle of February that had the whole school standing outside for 45 minutes in freezing weather while the Fire Department checked for whatever had set off the alarm.

My middle school had the "no hoodies or hoods" rule. And it extended to everything with a hood. Yes, even that furry scarf with ears on the hood and pawprints on the ends. No hoods!

We were not allowed to have facial hair at all. Like to the point where the principal would walk around during lunch with razors and shaving cream and do "Stubble checks". Absolutely ridiculous and he would send tons of us to the bathrooms to shave during lunch, no matter how small the stubble was.

They installed vending machines and later banned pocket change, so if you wanted anything from the machine you had to get it in the morning before classes started, or just get it cheaper in the shop next to the school.

I was sent to the principle in elementary school for getting a drink of water out of line (as in we walked down the hall in a formation and we had designated water drinking stops). To this day I still remember the principal asking angrily well what if every one started getting water without permission? And I still don’t have an answer.

No unnatural hair colors. Except for Lily, who dyed her hair the school color (maroon). It was dark enough to argue it was a weird red/brown, but it was clearly maroon and I think she got away with it because it was “school spirit”

The new Principal made a "morning round-up" rule where anyone arriving to class after the last bell had to go to the cafeteria and listen to a lecture about not being late for class. This took about an extra 15 minutes, making the students even more late to class than they would have otherwise been. Needless to say, everyone hated it, even the teachers. That principal didn't last long...

We had an up staircase and a down staircase. You could only go up the up staircase and only go down the down staircase. If you were caught going the wrong direction on either staircase, you would get some kind of warning/strike. I will admit that it did help from keeping the stairs get congested in between classes, but it was a huge pain in the ass if you had a class right next to the up staircase and had to go downstairs for your next class, because the down staircase was way at the other end of the floor,so you basically had to book it to your next class. Another stupid rule was only having three minutes in between classes. I went to a huge highschool, so you basically had to speed walk or jog to classes that were far. And with the whole staircase issue mentioned above, it resulted in people being late for class constantly.

We had the one-way system in our school. Over 2000 students in a series of buildings built in the 1950s it made total sense, especially as there were a couple of crushing incidents prior to the implementation of the system. Our stairs were reasonably close together though, so obviously less of an issue. There were other rules that were a PITA at the time, but with hindsight made perfect sense from a H&S perspective.

Kind of makes sense. The active ingredenses in that stuff is commonly disolved in alcohol, and some of them contains small amounts of morphine . For that reason cough sirup can sometimes be misused by students taking way more than the recomended dosis. Though they can be bought without a prescription, they are still a pharmapsudical drug, which is not harmless, and hence it ought to be treaded with care and respect. Therefore I think it was with good reason that the school tried to regulate the (Ab)use of them. Of course you should be given acces to them when you actually need it, while studendents getting drunk/high/intoxicated on that stuff should be stopped.

Went to school during the time where health and safety suddenly started going crazy, they introduced a "no contact under any circumstances" rule i.e no touching another person, we were like 6 or 7 years old. Suddenly one day not only is tag suddenly illegal, but they actually enforced it, I remember one day like 70% of the schools population was pulled off of the playground and made to sit on the floor in the hall, for the crime of just playing the games that children play.

"Don't play on the golf course. " Our tiny community got a burst of cash in the 70's due to having mineral rights on land with oil. It was amazing some of the things we had access to for a school in the plains in Montana: computer lab, ceramics, photography, and a freaking laser! They also bought the grade school a miniature golf course in the center of the play ground. A majority of the playground was concrete squirrels, turtles and a whale. These looked like a lot of fun to play on for a kid. We couldn't touch them. We couldn't get near them. We couldn't land our star wars figures on them, incorporate them in our games in any way or even walk near them when running from someone playing tag. Once in PE we got out the clubs and played a few rounds in my entire time in school. Other classes never even got that. After about 30 years, during a student clean up, they got some of the upper level high school kids to take hammers to them and pulverized them. "Don't let your underwear show." This was directed at the girls when Madonna was in fashion. One school official went to war on visible bra straps. While no girls even attempted copying Madonna, this official was making a preemptive attack. She made announcements and would bust girls in the halls. About this time the Varsity boys basketball team got new uniforms. Rather than spend money on the other teams, their old uniforms were given to the junior varsity girls team. Jerseys with huge arm and neck holes made for 17 year old boys where now being worn by 15 year old girls. Girls that were as active as possible and in public. If they pose for a picture, you could almost not see their bras. While playing the front of the jerseys flopped from side to side. At least one cup would be visible at any time. Suddenly girls basketball got a lot more popular.

No clothes from Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch or you get suspended for 3 days. I went to a private school and those stores had clothes that worked in the dress code guidelines. So, school starts, then a month after school starts, they decide a&f is too pornographic or whatever and told us we would get suspended for wearing anything from those stores. I didn't have any from there, because they were too expensive. I get making a rule like before people shop for school clothes (for a strict, religious private school, even though it's silly). Students' parents refused to go buy new clothes after already buying new ones. A friend of mine got suspended for 3 days for wearing a red polo, because it had whatever tiny embroidered logo was on it.

My high school put a ban on branded clothes because it caused elitism between students that was so bad it got to a point where students with Nike trainers would gang up on students wearing generic store brand. It worked. No more clothing snobs as everyones uniforms cost roughly the same

That if you say/do anything back to your bully it becomes a mutual conflict and isn't bullying, so if they start calling you slurs and making you feel bad every day and you call them stupid once or twice the school probably won't help. Also dress code required school branded hoodies... they were 50 dollars. If you wore a non school hoodie you got in school suspension

Many dry cleaners do alterations, I know several people who had ordinary store brand shirts embroidered with the school logo. Rather than a $50 shirt from the approved vendor, you could buy an $8 shirt and have it embroidered for $5.

my middle school had this, but only because the 7th-grade classrooms are on one side and the 8th-grade classrooms are on the other, so there were designated staircases for each grade. we also had the designated up-stairs and down-stairs from #80- the up-stairs were on the sides (the 7th- and 8th-grade stairs) and the down-stairs were in the middle (in front of the cafeteria and extracurricular classes, the ones that both grades can attend)

We had something like this when I was in 8th grade. We were sharing a new school building while ours was being renovated. The new building was going to be a middle school but they only had 6th graders at the time. And BOY did the administrators do their ABSOLUTE best to make sure the 6th graders and the 8th graders never crossed paths.

My parents had me in a Lutheran School in second grade. I was more shocked by the fact that I grew up LDS. The only thing any student from second grade on would be able to spend recess on was the lawn with one tree. You had no toys to play with such as soccer balls, Etc. I would go and either stand or sit by the tree by myself. Note.. No longer active in that faith

Daughters elementary school banned Jennings and leggings, saying they were "clingy" and therefore inappropriate. My daughter had long legs and a long torso. For a few years, those were literally the only pants that fit her since she was skinny, too. Told the school when they found pants that fit her property, they should feel free to buy her some - at their own expense. Until then, that's what she would be wearing. She was in 1st grade.

I do that too. But I also design exams when students must analyze a historical speech or newspaper article (I teach history). They can take their notes and printouts of the class presentations and make their own analysis. You cannot google it when the question is un-google-able...

A kid went to the hospital after falling from a wall. Then the school painted yellow lines around the school as a border which the kids weren’t allowed to cross. So the teachers had to stand guard and make sure no one crossed it.

People do realise that having e bottle of water with you all the time is something of the last 20 years - bottles of water on desks weren't a thing.

No shorts allowed between some day in October and some day in usually March/April (maybe May even). It was a K-8 school. We live in a 4 season area. It's hot in the summer, cooler in the fall/spring, and can sometimes snow but is usually just cold during the winter. It was a stupid rule.

This was probably made to protect the less fortunate kids. The ones whose parents would send them to school in anything. Including shorts in winter.

Holy...when I was at school in Germany in the 70s and 80s, almost nothing was forbidden - we had snowball fights in the winter, played ballgames in summer, gathered in groups, most of the boys had swiss army knives in their pockets...

Throughout secondary school we were made to shower completely naked. We weren't allowed to take towels in or cover ourselves. We were watched going in and had to prove we'd got water on us when we came out. The boys showered in shorts. Not a great experience for girls in different stages of puberty on a weekly basis!

These are so weird, but even weirder is how just last month (Apr 2021) Florida lawmakers pass a Bill that legalizes Teen Genital Inspections if they are suspected of being trans. This is to "allow young girls the chance to prove their skills in sports." WTF! A teacher/coach is actually allowed to inspect your childs gentiles and there is nothing legally you can do about it. And we are supposed to just have faith that isn't going to be abused horribly?

The stupidest school rule I've heard is, "YoU cAn'T sHoW yOuR sHoUlDeRs Or BaCk sInCe ThEy DiStRaCt ThE bOyS!" Any boy distracted by normal body parts so much that they can't focus on school should not be allowed around girls

We weren't allowed outside during breaks. There was a shop across the street from school and they didn't want us to go there. Everyone who went out had to write down his/her name and class when getting in. So half the shool went out on every break and they couldn't handle the amount of people wanting in when the bell started ringing. All of them were extremely late for classes and the teachers started to complain and so it stopped.

Back in the 1950s, my dad's high school said all boys had to come to school in a tie and jacket. My dad and his buddies came to school in a tie, a jacket, and their blue jeans, and an undershirt. Three days later, the rule went back to "something clean is fine, thanks".

Our secondary school had mandated school underwear - white striped with the school colours, unavailable anywhere but the exclusive school shop. This wasn't like vest and shorts type underwear, this was bra and knickers type underwear. The PE teacher (all of ours were female) had to be in the room when we changed and would give detention if we weren't in school underwear. Oh, and the bra sizes didn't go above a 34 band or a C cup, so tough if they were too small for you.

You know it's no wonder there are a lot of people with mental disorders looking back now. Bullying was rampant and the schools did diddly squat. A single bully can terrorize a lot of children.

My middle school had rules that girls weren’t allowed to wear leggings, or tank tops. Reasonable enough. But - they definitely should have thought themselves through. My friend asked the assistant prin. why we weren’t allowed to wear tank tops. A grown-a** woman told the 11 year old, “girls’ shoulders are too distracting to boys and it’s unfair for them to have to deal with their hormones because you can’t dress correctly.” Also, when I asked a different assistant prin. about the leggings rule and if it would be okay if we wore sports pants over the leggings: “No, your legs are still highly distinguished and those curves are the reason you have to watch out -“ here he laughed. Yes. He. I was in sixth grade.
