There is a completely brilliant—and about half the time true—phrase: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." And this phrase, alas, also applies to our New Year's resolutions. At least, very often, the promises that we solemnly make to ourselves in the first days of the new year remain just pipe dreams.

On the other hand, is it worth giving up these resolutions? Definitely not—after all, for many of us, they really help us to become better and get rid of bad habits. For example, mindlessly spending money on something not worth our attention, while concentrating, on the contrary, on something both exciting and frugal. And this thread in the AskReddit community is dedicated to exactly such cases.

I'm selling most of the purses sitting in my closet that don't give me joy anymore and investing in half-dead plants at Lowe's to revive and give beauty to my home. On literally the first day of 2025, an interesting thread appeared in the AskReddit community, where the topic starter—user u/riddlestheanswer—asked netizens: "What things are you doing in 2025 to both save money and find more fulfillment?"

The author explained that they personally want more financial freedom in the new year—and this, combined with the difficult economic situation, actually means cutting some expenses. For example, on hobbies that do not bring much joy, but are quite expensive. And so, the topic starter asked people online about various "frugal hobbies" for the new year.

Disagree. I'm 50 and several of my friends have grey hair, and some have had it for years. They all look amazing. One of my friends has black hair and had let her natural grey grow in and it has done so in gorgeous streaks. I would LOVE to stop coloring my hair and just let it go grey. But every time my roots start to come in, I have a stray silver hair here or there and the rest is just my normal, mousy, ashy brown color that I hate. I cannot wait to go grey but, for whatever reason, it is taking forever.

Not everyone can do this, but in the last 5 years I've gotten rid of credit cards and paid off all my debt. Any money I spend comes directly from my checking account via my bank/debit card. (Which is a Visa and works everywhere a credit card does) I made a mess of my finances when I was younger so I'm very proud of how far I've come. This way I never spend more money than I actually have. (I do have an emergency credit card with a low limit but it really never gets used)

I'm really bad with my money so what has helped me, and I know this isn't really that novel, but is I have a spreadsheet of all my recurring expenses every week, my income for that week, and the tracking all of my expenditures. Because I want to save it's helping me to cut down on buying things that I just want instead of need. Seeing every little purchase, even $0.50 ones, has helped me to make sure I stay more in budget and to see how much I actually spend. It makes it all real for me rather than ephemeral.

"Your Money or Your Life" is a great book that some friends and I followed together.

It must be said that among the answers to the author's question—and there are almost 200 of them today—there are ideas about which things should be abandoned in the new year, as well as hobbies that allow a person to acquire many useful skills. Which, in turn, provide an opportunity to save.

For example, many readers admit that the ability to sew or cook well are incredibly useful skills that not only bring them joy, but also make them more thrifty. After all, home-cooked meals will, in any case, be cheaper than meals from a restaurant. And much healthier than, for example, fast food. This means that it's also an opportunity to save on probable treatment and medications.

Hand holding a wine glass with red berries. Decided a few days ago to stop drinking alcohol altogether. It's not just the money I spend on alcohol, it's the money I'd then spend on a pack of cigarettes, the takeaway food, the feeling like s**t for days afterwards. Not worth it anymore! Calculated I probably spend between €2000 and €3000 a year on alcohol and alcohol-related purchases.

This! I decided to quit smoking in 2025 and try at least a dry January. I don't know who has been praying for me or what energy has shifted, but come January 1st, I all of a sudden had no craving for a cigarette or my daily wine after work. I don't even think about them anymore. For reference, I've smoked consistently for the past 9 or so years and hadn't gone more than 2 days without drinking. I've tried quitting both multiple times but always failed. I hope this energy and magic continues. I feel so damn good!

Part of when I'm shopping is how much does it cost and how many meals can I get out of it. I have a separate fridge and freezer from my roommates which happen to be my brother, his daughter and her husband. They all share food, which makes sense for me to stay separate since they eat things that I can't. I would buy something I could eat and instead using the food that they have, they would eat my stuff leaving me with nothing. I make most of my snack stuff, although I do occasionally splurge, if I'm having a really good month and it has to last me awhile. But I've learned to cook some things and freeze the rest. There are a lot of seriously f****d up things with my current living situation, but I'm making the most of it since I'm pretty much stuck and don't have any other options.

To save money I just recently found out that the brand of cat food I buy has a contact us page where one of the entries is coupon requests and they said you can contact them every 3 months to have them send out coupons. I set a reminder on my phone that goes off once every 3 months to contact them for more coupons. When I did my last request they sent out a $10 off and 2x $5 off coupons, so if they still send 3 coupons per letter it would be a savings of at least $60 a year.

When you're on a fixed income EVERY PENNY COUNTS! $60 will pay for 3 of the 6 prescriptions that I take every month. I'm on disability, which is a fraction of what I made while working. I only qualify for Medicare Part A and B, which comes out of the check. The same one that I get to much money on to qualify for Medicare Part C and D. Those cover dental, hearing, vision and prescriptions, my regular prescriptions are $400-450 a month. That $60 will buy 2 months of cat food for my 14 1/2 year old cat Tiger. It will buy almost 3 -12lb bags of dry cat food, if I get it on sale. $60 can almost cover my entire monthly grocery budget. $60 will fill up the tank twice on my 19 year old car. $60 is only $10 less than my car insurance for a month, which is $68-70 dollars. If you have money $60 doesn't seem like much, but for the Elderly, Disabled and Poor $60 is a lot of f*****g money. I've battled cancer twice, the chemotherapy and radiation knocked me on my a*s.

It's not surprising—after all, the purchasing power of the population in the modern economy is gradually decreasing. For example, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the average purchasing power of the consumer dollar in the U.S. city has decreased by almost half in over a quarter of a century.

So many people are just trying to save money—but at the same time, the modern person is looking for hobbies that interest to them.

"Decades and centuries of social development have done their job - modern people are no longer ready to just do something that is not interesting to them, just in order to save some money. Ideally, this should bring not only savings, but also joy. Therefore, such threads are quite reasonable nowadays," Valery Bolgan explains.

I love that you are trying to get in touch with your local area more. I get a little ticked off when people suggest "travel, just travel, you can't be open-minded if you don't travel, no one travels anymore, why doesn't anyone travel." Like, wtf, it costs money I don't have. You can learn to be open-minded by going to the library and reading from the travel section, watching creators from different parts of the world.

Box of groceries and fresh vegetables on a kitchen counter. I got a weekly CSA box delivered to my house this year. With the cost of gas it's comparable to regular grocery shopping. It forces me to be more creative with cooking. And even though I still have some waste it's less than before. Also, I'm spending less on groceries because there are fewer impulse buys.

For 2025, my goal is to get better at not forgetting I have zucchini in the fridge. And to remember which fruits & veg go bad fastest.

    Edit: spelling.

Do stretches, push ups, sit ups, crunches, and planks. If we can manage to "get off our butts" to do this, then *perhaps* a gym membership won't be a waste of money since it shows we're disciplined enough to get **** done.

We live near several big rivers and plan on spending a lot of time on our kayaks. We have had them for 7 years so they don't cost us anything now. Tomorrow we are going snowshoeing and plan on going as often as we can this winter. We always pack our own food/snacks so it is pretty much free fun. The exercise is good for us, too. We cut the cord years ago on cable, have a roof full of solar panels and well water and have no debt.. Only pay for phone, trash, wi-fi and insurance.

Again, this depends upon where you live, as in - our building is a listed graded building that's hundreds of years old so we can't have certain things such as solar panels due to regulations. Plus I think a well would be dangerous given how many drunky people seem to find our street on the weekends! It's bad enough trying to stop them from climbing over the gate at the end of the road for a shortcut and injuring themselves nevermind trying to rescue them out of a well!!! 😄

I don't know why you were downvoted, because my Sister and her family live out in BFE. They have a deal with the local farmers that have chickens. Those pens and coops are sealed up tighter then Ft. Knox, because of all of the wildlife. They're close to the Ouachita Mountains and you should see what pops on their and the neighboring farms and ranches trail/security cameras. Small dogs and cats, especially have to be kept inside or if you're out you better be right there with them. EVERYONE keeps rifles and shotguns by their doors to the outside and if you're outside being strapped with a handgun is not uncommon or a bad idea. It's not just Wildlife you have to worry about either. You can have Cottonmouths or if you're close to some body of water, then you need to look out for Water Moccasins as well. Both sides of my family is Farmers and Country folk, so I grew up around that kind of stuff, whenever we would go to visit any family.
