26 Times Retail Workers Were True Heroes And Bent Their Rules To Give Customers Discounts
Some rules at work are based on the trust between an employee and employer. You can’t check if they are actually followed or not, but the employer expects you to. But on special occasions, employees might bend those rules, especially if it doesn’t hurt them and makes someone else’s day.
This is perfectly applicable to retail workers who have means to give a discount if it doesn’t require official documents filled in, because it truly makes the customer respect the worker for being so nice and it’s a good feeling to do good.

Me: *receiving the drinks. May your life be brightened again. Good luck.
Read the entire thread and decided to comment here. I love this post. I do my very best to be kind to any and all retail and service staff. A few weeks before Christmas I was in a "discount" type store buying things to be included in gift bags for low income seniors. I see a person who is wearing the store shirt standing to the side with an item, maybe a candy bar, in her hand and waved her ahead of me. I said something like "You're either hurrying to go on break or go home after working all day, please go ahead." I am severely hearing impaired and so did not hear the conversation between the two workers. Turns out I got the 30% employee discount - I guess because I was nice. Be kind people!
People over 55 get free drinks from Whataburger, no purchase necessary, and I'd love to just give them free drinks when they didn't know the rule. Couple came in, didn't know what Whataburger was, just wanted a drink each, so I just hand the cups over. The wife went to slowly go sit down, and the husband pulls out his wallet and asks how much. I tell him nothing, and he looked about in tears with gratification. Another time, a lady, her daughter, and her granddaughter come in. The daughter wanted a small drink, the lady wanted a medium. I gave them the small for free. Daughter was confused and said I forgot it. I told her seniors get drinks for free. She tried correcting me and saying the small was for her. I said, "I know, your mom wants the small." She stood there for a split second then went, "OH! Yes! Exactly!" Favorite part of that job was finding out how to save people money wherever I could.
I don't think someone handing out a free drink at Taco Bell is quite the same as the C-suite manager relaxing on his third yacht because they don't pay their employees a living wage.
Load More Replies...There are many examples of retail workers giving student or senior discounts to people who are not students or seniors. Twitter user Apex Redditor actually got a military discount after he told the cashier that he is, in fact, not in the military. The cashier pretended not to hear that and allowed the person to save some money.
The tweet went pretty viral and inspired other people to share their own stories. There were people who also got military discounts just for knowing someone who is in the military or because the reason for buying certain things made the retail workers laugh. Retail workers would insist on finding an excuse to give something for free or at a lower price.
I'm in my 30s and already almost half way grey. I'll be getting this soon enough
I work in retail and give a better discount on discounted items just to get rid of it. It’s been there for YEARS!
My grandma refused her senior discount until she in her late 70's. Absolutely refused to accept it.
Here in México is from 60. Its Good that he made a discount maybe to a 57 yezr old.
My sister did this with shave ice. Tripped, fell, cried, cue my mother sending me in with more money for another shave ice and they gave it to us for free.
Did the same thing with an ice cream cone, the cashier really nice and gave me another chocolate for free.

The clerk gave it to me free. I wasn't really surprised because around that time I had been told that their manager had authorized the clerks to give free drinks to people they recognized as regular customers - kind of an informal rewards program for their store.
Reminds me of the time I went to the movies with my brother. We had just finished getting our drinks and popcorn and were walking toward the theater when my drink slips out of my hand and spills onto the floor. I'm busy apologizing to the worker who is cleaning up the mess. He says it's fine and to go get myself another drink, it's free.
I had gone to a McDonald's and ordered a boat load of food. Headed for my car, bag of 🍟 falls. I went back inside asked for a broom and dust pan. The manager asked what happened. I told him and said I needed to order more fries 🍟 didn't act like an a*s so he didn't charge for the reload.
To be fair one soda pays for pretty much the entire pack of syrup
I went into a convenience store when it was very hot and my car AC quit, and asked for the biggest slurpee they had (back in the old days, some places weren't self serve). When I asked how much, they (plural) said it was free. I must have looked really hot.
It doesn’t seem like it would be beneficial to a company to make exceptions for customers as they are losing money. Userlike agrees that “Allowing customers to return clothes past their due date or buy insurance after they drop their new laptop could be seen as irresponsible.”
But what actually happens is that the more profitable approach is just to be super friendly to the customer. A study showed that when a company had a relaxed and easy return process, customers were more likely to make a purchase but not return their item. But with a stricter model, the store noticed an 11.2 percent drop in sales.
It makes the customer appreciate the company and the people working for it because they realize that the worker isn’t supposed to do what they are doing and they might get in trouble if their managers or colleagues are strict rule followers, but they still do it for the sake of the customer.
In The Netherlands you have the "Kringloop winkels", kind of like the thrift stores. They get everything for free and used to have prices very low budget so people with a low income could afford to buy some reasonable good things. Than things changed and they became so expensive it was borderline ridiculous... Last time I bought something there was an Ikea single bed, the simplest version there was because I wanted to remodel it into a big dogbed. They asked as much as at Ikea. So I asked if they fell on their head a bit to often last week because no way I was going to pay the "new" price for a used one. They asked me what I thought was a good price and when I made my counteroffer, they agreed. What they do, is not pricetag anything like beds and just ask a certain amount and see if someone's crazy enough to pay it
Yup. Plus the fact they're abusing an honorable program. Plain and simple, they're just pieces of s**t. Jealousy doesn't become them.
Load More Replies...I don't think veteran Bob at a thrift store (where there is literally no corporate cost for the merchandise) is quite the same as the C-suite manager relaxing at the country club because they don't pay their employees a living wage.
Load More Replies...Heh, just like my dog used to do. None of his toys lasted very long; either he'd rip their guts out or destroy the squeaker.
Ooh this takes me back. I had a husky-German Shepherd who had a crazy strong prey drive and would often just go hunt things on her own. Figured she'd do this to a toy, and we were right. We got to pick a plush squeaker toy at PetSmart for free with the purchase of a bag of dog food, and mom said, "Take the seashell so I don't feel bad when she rips it to shreds." I think it lasted minutes. 😆
Load More Replies...I do the same thing for my dogs at Goodwill but don't worry, I choose the ugly stuffed animals that no one will want. Dog toys are super expensive. I can spend $20 for two toys that they destroy in a couple hours or $10 on an armful that keep them happy for weeks.
You can usually get cheap skineeez multipacks from Amazon. They're great since they have no stuffing so no mess and your dog will be less likely to want to tear them apart.
Load More Replies...A few animal rescues I know will also buy lots of stuffed toys from thrift stores. It saves on money and prevents waste!
My nephew and sister did this a few times. It was heaven sitting there watching the dogs go nuts.
Careful doing this. Just a word of warning. Our dog has separation anxiety and would chew on our comforter on our bed while we were gone. He did this for years. Then one time he swallowed to much of the stuffing (same as a stuffed animal)to pass. It blocked him up and almost killed him. He had to have surgery to survive. No more stuffed stuff in this house.

I went into JB Hifi and asked about PCs and they said for gaming I should get one built and it will do anything I need it to for school still. I'm 36 and haven't been in school for 20 years this year.

Reminds me of the time I went to the movies with a couple coworkers -- one was still in college. She asked for her college discount at the ticket window and the guy made her prove it with her student ID. Then he just gave the same discount to me and the other coworker, no questions asked, even though we weren't in college and didn't even ask about the discount!!!
I don't think someone handing out a discount at Apple, wait, you're saying this about APPLE??????? Seriously? The people who charge 40% more for their phones because of the pretty packaging? Who make you have a different charging from all the other charges out there? Who took away headphone ports so you HAVE to buy different headphones?
Load More Replies...At the same time, you can’t do that all the time and the customer can’t expect the same treatment the next time they come in. The workers actually can get in trouble for that and a cashier on Reddit started a thread where they asked “don't demand the same discount with another member of staff next time, we were feeling kind, don't get us in trouble.”
If the worker does this too many times, someone will notice. Most of the time workers give special treatment to people who they see are feeling down or who are friendly with them. There was actually another Twitter thread started by a woman who used to work at Hobby Lobby and would give discounts whenever she could to people if they complimented her.
Keeping teens active and "off the streets" should be a goal of all businesses. And, once these high schoolers become adults, hopefully, they will become paying customers.
Just this week my car didn't start at tuesday morning, having to get to work as I drive the car as my job I was panicking a bit calling my local car repair&tire shop (I'm not exactly friends with the staff there but we're in good terms) asking if they could help a man out. Half an hour later I was driving their spare rental car as mine was being towed to the shop. They promised to squeeze it in this week so it'd probly be ready at Thursday, Firday at the latest so I was looking at paying for a rental car for a week (eek). Surprisingly at Wednesday they called me that the car is already done, when I went to pick it up the shop was packed so I just swiftly paid and left. After driving for a while I went wait sth doesn't add up here and looked at the way too small sum in the receipt. Turns out they didn't charge me anything for the tow, the rental car or the three bottles of diesel antifreeze that I took!

Is this a thing everywhere? My wife is a teacher and we are looking for a new mattress
Fine print didn't say anything about "Human teachers" just teachers. Totally counts! 😂
But there is the other side as well. It was also mentioned in one of the tweets in this list that sometimes cashiers just don’t care. They don’t care if the business suffers a loss, they don’t care if they will get caught and get in trouble for bending the rules.
It’s a monotonous job that causes mental fatigue but it’s also physically draining and the compensation is too little to leave extra money after covering the most necessary living expenses.
I would like to remind everybody of the possibility to utterly disagree with someone, maybe even don't like someone, and still not get this person banned.
Everytime I see someone's been downvoted because they disagree with someone (and not being nasty about it), I just upvote. Downvoting someone because they disagree is so childish and immature....

This happened on our honeymoon too! Lol we said, no. She said let's try that again, are you a triple a member? Um, yes? Discount 😆
If a worker is being kind enough to give a customer a discount, why do you think/assume they’re being mean and rude in their mind? That makes no sense.

Why report this? Do y'all think it is funny or cute? Do you think we should all be perfect little brainwashed automatons while inflation and prices rise but corporate profits grow? Are all our companies so honest and well intentioned that they always put people before $? The fact that so many people have no other realistic job opportunities other than retail and service is disturbing. How about reporting on the conditions and circumstances that drive employees to be so disgruntled in the beginning. Besides from my experience managers do it all the time when there is a complaint they have to cover their own a*s or kiss up for a company oops! The only difference is the average employee is not empowered to do anything for themselves, not even think.
Oh man. The one thing I miss about working for Kroger was being able to buy the private selection Black Forest ham lunch meat. We don’t have a Kroger in NH
Were you referring to the Terry Pratchett novel? Because some people have referred to the US/Afghanistan/Iraq war as "The Long War."

On January 2nd I went into a Dunkin and ordered three chocolate Long Johns. The lady dropped a glazed donut in the bag too, and said, "Happy New Year."
The Whataburger I worked at had totally spaced on getting burger patties for the three to four days before supplies came back in, so people could either get that same sandwich, just with chicken and at a steep discount, or they could leave it. I wish I was working there at that point for that lol
I get quite a lot of freebies from Dunkin just for being nice to the employees....amazing . Every time I have my dogs with me at the drive thru too, I get some sort if cred for it
My Son went to Penske Toyota to service his truck, went next door to a Dunkin’ for some iced coffee, the girl rang him up and told him to enjoy his cinnamon roll since they were just out of the oven! He was like, oh nice! Thanks! He text me a pic and I said Like Happyyyyy up there, Luckyyyy!!
This reminds me of when the Auntie Anne's was out of medium cups so just gave us 2 smalls, we got more from than if we just got mediums

I was the last customer to go through the drive thru at our Taco Bell one night, didn't order much, just a Nachos Bell Grande and a drink. The guy at the window takes my money, then hands me my order, followed by two carry-out bags literally overflowing with food - tacos, burritos, crunchwraps, etc. Confused, I told him 'I didn't order this', to which he replied 'we give the last customer extra stuff, it's less stuff we have to throw away at the end of the night".
I get the employee discount at Texas Roadhouse for the rest of my life and I’ve never worked there….my daughter worked there at the time she was killed by a drunk driver and in honor of her they said I can have her employee discount for life
8 years after quitting, Kroger finally took away my employee discount.
My sister still gets either free or drastically reduced priced pizza at the Hungry Howies she worked at. She's been gone for ~3 years now.
I worked at The Whiz Burger in Jr. High (totally lied my a$$ off about knowing anything about being a cashier. They thought I was 16, too). Lasted about 2 weeks, but became really good friends with another employee. I got free burgers and fries for a few years until they went out of business.

I occasionally give my employee discount to random customers if they can't afford it or if they seem to be having a bad day. Before Christmas I had a lady buying a bunch of toys for kids in the foster care system so I threw on my discount she ended up getting 45 dollars off. I told her to take that money and buy more toys for those kids because they deserve a good Christmas as much as anyone.
Giving people discounts is fine, but not scanning things is theft because it screws up your inventory, wastes time while you look for that inventory later because you forgot about that, then gets marked off as actual theft. And if you're employer decides to check the till camera, you'll get canned and have theft on your record. Do discounts, but don't do this.
If it was stuff that has a specific inventory, yes, but they said they worked at the restaurant IN a gas station (think the place you can get fresh breakfast burritos at QT or WaWa) - because of food safety and quality issues, there's not a lot of specific inventory, instead it's a balance of money going out for supplies vs money coming in from sales. If a cup or wrapper falls on the floor, or pizza gets burned, or an order is accidently made wrong, it's just tossed, not logged as shrink. Every restaurant and food service place operates like this because you CAN'T account for every tomato, piece of cheese, sandwich wrapper and sauce packet. The number of drinks Starbucks throws out because the customer didn't clearly specify what they wanted, or someone rang it up wrong, or someone made it wrong, is SHOCKING! Plus they have a "make it right" policy where, even if you didn't get it at THAT Starbucks, if your order was incorrect, they are SUPPOSED to make it correctly for free!
