Younger generations are often criticized as being lazy and entitled, but this isn’t a new phenomenon at all. From branding Gen Z as the “snowflake generation” to accusing Millennials of prioritizing buying avocados over houses, many Boomers see them as someone who hasn't figured out life yet.

But can we blame them? With the cost of living crisis, climate change, the pandemic, and geopolitical tensions weighing heavily on their minds, it can be hard for anyone. Evidence shows that nearly half of Zoomers (46%) and four in 10 millennials (39%) feel stressed most of the time. Not to mention burnout at work, which has been at an all-time high since 2021. So it’s no surprise that these youngsters prefer to do the bare minimum.

It seems that the younger generations are simply tired of the chaos and pressures of the modern world. Fortunately, the subreddit “Anti Work” is a place where they can vent their frustrations and blow off at least some of the accumulated steam.

We’ve compiled a list of screenshots that prove the struggles of Millennials and Gen Z and why we should consider cutting them some slack for not showing up as their best selves every day.

If the government has to put up 1 million dollars in bail money; the government should get shares of the company to the value of 1 million dollars. That's as fair as it can get. Problem solved.

In 2008, the UK government bailed out and took ownership (part and full) of banks that needed bail outs, when the market recovered they sold the bits they owned to their chums at discount rates.

The govt of the food ol USA would just figure out how to make it even more unprofitable and then fight about funding it every year in congress. Then in the end just add it to our national debt. Since when do we trust govt to run companies? They should be auctioned off to recover the bail out funds.

Unfortunately they can and they did. I don't disagree with the sentiment but whenever the government gets involved in anything, anywhere the cost to value increases exponentially. The bureaucracy and administrators usually increase operating cost by 50-75% and production suffers dramatically.

A potential client called me once. He was looking for an interpreter for about $15/hr. Ummmm - no. I charge more than that because I have overhead, need to make a profit, and I have a degree in this. He said "so you are saying 'no'?" I replied "no, I'm saying 'yes', you just can't afford me." He started bitching that we were too expensive. I hung up.

This sounds good until we price the minimum wage so high we lose jobs. $15 is not it. But in California it's $22 for some jobs now. That's what I pay my babysitter. That used to be a good job. I prided myself on paying the nanny above minimum wage. Plenty of people do not pay household staff minimum wage. But I'd hate to see people start losing jobs bc we think we can just raise the minimum wage forever. It's not all big business giving jobs and paying wages. Fine- no babysitter for me. But what about the babysitter with no rent money now?

See that is suppose to be the free market. The costs of goods settle on the sweet spot between supply snd demand. So if we raise labor so much that people cant hire labor, then labor charges a little less so someone is willing to pay that rate. The problem is corps have had the upper hand to too long and wages are depressed. No increase in minimun wage in 14 years ? Boo.

Whenever it's about profit, companies only care for the money, whenever a worker asks for wages, suddenly it's about passion and money isn't everything. Companies hate on socialism and praise capitalism. They tell you constantly that nothing is free and we are not social services. But if you go: yeah, it's capitalism baby, so pony up and pay dime for my time. Then you being in for the money is a bad thing.

The youngest employees are already feeling stressed and exhausted, even in the earliest stages of their careers. Psychotherapist Kim Hollingdale believes that the younger generations have “the worst collection of stressors” among workers right now - from a lack of power at work to the hustle culture and inability to relax. Although all generations might face a lot of professional challenges, the youth have the least authority to set boundaries and say no to tasks. Many feel pressure to perform and take on a big workload that leaves them exhausted.

This one is actually scary. It is leading to the loss of great teachers and the hiring of not so great ones. The push by parents and lack of support is leading to skewed curriculum and even schools focused on teaching only what the parents want them to teach. Why would anyone enter that field only to have their hands tied and have to worry about every single word they say?

I remember a friend who divorced her husband. Amongst other things, he accused her of being frigid and not liking sex because she wouldn’t sleep with him. She told him, point blank, “Oh no, I’m not frigid. I like sex. I just don’t like sex with YOU”. Same thing applies here. Certain companies complaining that people don’t want to work anymore, when the truth is, they just don’t want to work for those companies, because of all the reasons listed above in this posting. Just like my friend’s ex-husband, who made life and intimacy with him really unpleasant, if those companies had made it worth people’s while to work for them, by paying a decent wage and not falling into the typical adversarial “us (management) vs them (labor)” relationship with their employees, they would have filing cabinets overloaded with the resumes of very qualified people who are dying to come work with them. They don’t sweeten the pot, they’re going to continue to be woefully short handed and eventually obsolete, while their competitors who are adapting to the times and offering employees better pay without the “management vs labor” b******t attitude and toxic work atmosphere thrive.

1st year of COVID we made a mint at work, 3% bonus, next year the board decided that our targets would be in line with the boom from the previous year. We didn't do it, no bonus and inflationary pay rises that year but the board gave themselves 6% pay rises and bonuses, the CEO took home home around €7M. This year we hit target 5% pay rise, board got 6% again, inflation was 11% when they announced that. I'm on a comfortable wage but the warehouse staff and drivers are being shafted while the CEO rakes it in.

Another big stressor for Gen Z and Millennials is money, with about 40% reporting worries about their finances. Of course, many workers have also encountered similar problems, but it’s more severe now as the cost of living is rising much faster than salaries. For example, in the US, home prices increased by 121% in the last 56 years, while income rose only by 29%. This makes it more difficult to reach milestones like marriage and homeownership.

There would be absolutely no way to regulate that. They’d simply act like they love it and be supported financially off camera and pretend to act and dramatise everything like they do already and continue their sham scripted franchise and people would lap it up and they’d make even more money. Just send them to a desert island and leave them there. Problem solved.

Sounds like The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Except they STILL managed to make a joke out of everything they were doing and had a fancy million dollar RV to live in. So like that, but different. And she should be on water restriction until she understands the ramifications of using more water than the whole of LA county every day in a drought season.

What will the corporatists do, stop hiring and do the work themselves because the younger generations demand a salary? My argument against old people running the government is that they aren't looking into the future with the same concern as people in their teens, twenties, and thirties. Let's face it. Old people don't have much of a future left, yet they make laws that stretch generations into the future. Doesn't make sense. I remember when Diane Feinstein dismissed a group of intelligent high school girls when they raised issues in her office because they weren't of voting age. Okay, but it's their future, not yours you old hag.

Additionally, people who feel like they are unprepared or have failed to reach big goals might suffer from milestone anxiety. It may seem that everyone else is graduating, buying a house, getting married, being promoted, or starting a successful business, and you’re running slightly behind to take these steps. New research suggests that the pressure to hit such milestones is affecting younger people more than previous generations. Shockingly, even 83% of 16 to 24-year-olds feel forced to reach them. In retrospect, that’s way too young to be worrying about not being good enough just because you don’t have a house and all your friends do.

You turn your back on society and the public turns against you. By doing this way, the people who use the system realize that it is the owners/managers that are a problem and the drivers are appealing for public support without causing the public inconvenience.

I think this awesome. My daughter just had a baby, she was only going to get 6 weeks off with her baby. At her post-partum, check up, she said she was really sad and jsut not ready to go back to work, she was breast feeding. That doctor sighed her off work for another 6 weeks. He was on her side he felt like she needed more time off. During that time off she found a work from home job, so it all worked out. Her finance got more paid time off than she did, and she is the one that gave birth.

I hope you can find some peace; I know the holidays this year will probably be especially hard for you. ::hugs:: I was working a horrible retail job myself when my dad died in 2021, but when my sister called me at work to tell me he had been taken to the hospital, my boss actually let me clock out. My dad died that night, with me holding his hand. My work even gave me a few bereavement days (they knew my dad had been disabled and catastrophically brain-damaged for 21 years following an accident and that I was one of his caregivers.) I was still honestly surprised that my notoriously-crappy grocery store job was relatively kind to me about my dad’s death.

I got home and to a huge bouquet of flowers after the funeral and then another was waiting on my desk when I got back to work. Along with a letter advising me that I was only entitled to 2 days bereavement pay, I'd been off for 9. These pursuits help to unleash creativity and make them more financially stable, all while creating a passion project or a brand that belongs solely to them. However, long additional working hours have been linked to exhaustion and burnout, which Zoomers and Millennials are strongly connected to.

I blame the media for propagating this bs instead of publishing news articles that contain the truth. Executive golden parachutes, excessive salaries and benefits, and kowtowing to the shareholders is why employees don't want to work for an untenable salary.

I used to work 4-16 hour shifts back to back every week at a nursing home. I was the only nurse on my floor with 2 aids and up to 50 residents. I did this for a few months until I smartened up and went to a different facility. And, guess what? Same c**p at the new job. I retired at 62 because I was so freaking tired!

Just did the math. You would have $299,575,550,925 in 2021 ($299.57 Billion). Elon Musk's net worth is about $246 Billion (sources vary). So this person is off by a bit, but their point still stands

Musk's net worth is mostly due to stock in the companies he runs. His net worth goes up or down a lot based on the values of those stocks. This might have been true back when it was posted.

So let’s put one single billion into perspective. 1 million seconds is about 12 days. 1 billion seconds is just under 32 years. Which means that if you earn $1 every single second and never spent any of it, it would take you about 32 years to earn a single billion dollars. And be aware: that's 80.000$ a day! If you earned $5000 a day it would take you about 527 years to earn a single billion dollars. And only if you don't spend any of it ever!

For the love of god don't do this. Anonymous surveys are a toss up in terms of anonymity. While it may be cathartic, your best case is they won't care, and worst case, which is very possible, is they will find a reason to let you go because the survey was not so anonymous. It's just not worth it.

We have an annual workplace survey (NHS hospital in the UK). It claims to be anonymous, but each submission is assigned a submission number (when it was paper based, each copy had a different number). Management claim that it's to ensure good representation, stratified by type of employee (medical, nursing, physio, porter, cleaner etc), but they can use it to identify the person if you include derogatory comments. I can sort of understand if someone used it to call their boss racist slurs, but their idea of "derogatory" included comments like "the senior management team don't talk to front line staff enough" or "we need healthier food options in the staff canteen" Over time, the annual survey has become a joke, because no-one dares write what they really think, so management use it as PR and claim everybody is happy at work because no significant complaints are ever made.

I pulled of and install of 1.5 million worth of equipment, ahead of schedule and below the assigned install budget. They gave me 50 euros bonus before tax, about 29 euros net. All that for saving the company around 50.000 euros. In my appraisal that year I had points deducted because in an email my sister sent me she used the F word so when I replied telling her not to send stuff like that to my work email the server flagged me for "inappropriate language". So I didn't get a raise or promotion.

Contrary to older generations’ beliefs, their successors aren’t work-shy; they’re just not that fond of hustle culture. Today, many focus less on working to the point of extreme fatigue for an employer in order to move up the corporate ladder and more on building their dream careers by themselves. It also acts as a security blanket in case a company fires them. All that’s left is to move forward or take on your passion project full-time. After you start working for yourself, you can’t really get fired.

As someone who has flipped burgers, it's one of the most difficult things I've ever done. You have to remember at least 50 recipes up to grams, including the campaign ones. You have to read the screen with all those different names and check the constantly rising numbers next to them to figure out what to do next and in what order. You use several different machines, some for buns, some for meat, deep fryer for others and each of them beeps to get something done. You need to do basically ten things at the same time, fast, efficiently and perfectly, while whole world beeps around you. If you lose your train of thoughts for one second it's just endless chaos. And not to mention you can still hear customers complaining about everything being too slow and too *insert-negative-adjective*. It would be fun to see all those billionaires doing dvsn one shift flipping burgers. Like even fifteen minutes.

This gen X won't either. Also, the first question you ask a recruiter, even before answering any of theirs, should be "What does it pay?" If they answer with anything other than the compensation, memorize this, "I'm solely seeking opportunities with companies transparent enough to communicate truthfully and completely with their applicants."

While searching for a healthy work-life balance, some younger employees are “quiet quitting” their jobs. It’s a phenomenon when workers are fulfilling their responsibilities and working hours without going above and beyond for a company that just doesn’t seem to care about them. They’re merely starting to work for what they’re paid for. This is a response to many things in work culture - unreasonable expectations, a toxic work environment, a heavy workload, and micromanagement. If these issues aren't addressed, the employee may have no choice but to dial back on their efforts.

They bred that particular cultivar of potato to have a lower moisture content, making it more suitable for use in potato chips. The genetics are patented, and would (in the US) be protected for 20 years from the patent date. India does not recognize patents on genetics, so the suit was dismissed.

Not three months. Twelve months. A whole year. Utilities, rent or mortgage payment, gas for cars, lawn mowers, buying gifts for birthdays, holidays, paying for groceries plus buying items for your own hobby (or hobbies), going to school to better yourself, buying food for a pet, not to mention visits to the vet, toys for said pet. This doesn't even include bills for if you get sick, or have children. Plus other miscellaneous bills I haven't even mentioned. Yeah, I'd love to watch a CEO live like us for a whole year.

Yeah Undercover Boss didn't go far enough. They hear one employee's sob story and then hands them a bunch of money and then the boss looks like the good guy. But what they don't realize it's not just that one employee. It's all of them! Give all of them more money.

Life bounced back after many episodes of climate much colder and much warmer than at present, but never before has it faced plastic waste in every ecosystem. Stop consuming products from major polluters like Pepsi, as much as possible. Your bone density, teeth, and metabolic health will all be better, too.

They're all scummy. My daughter worked for a Coca-Cola bottling plant and they would walk the parking lot looking in employee's cars. God help you if they spotted a Mountain Dew can, a Taco Bell wrapper or bag or Lays or Doritos bags among other products made by Pepsi.

Of course, there are areas where they could improve, for example, by changing the ways they choose to unwind after work. Gen Z is more likely to use social media to relax, with some spending 4.5 hours on it daily. This makes it more difficult to ignore work notifications that are a persistent reminder of all the haunting tasks waiting for you, which doesn’t sound calming at all. Also, if you’re always on the phone, it’s more compelling to answer a work text than if you’re taking a stroll outside or having dinner with your family.

Be careful with half assed knowledge. If you live in a hire/fire at will state you can be laid off for any reason / no reason. It can't be an overt violation - like "because you are black / gay / etc" but they don't have to give you any reason.

Honestly, few places would straight fire anyone. It opens them to lawsuits. In my experience, they'll either just say no or give as little as possible. If you want a raise, your best bet is to just find another job after a year or two. Some companies do give solid raises and promotions, but they will either offer them to you directly or have an internal application process for desired roles. Anyone gets a raise because they asked, I am genuinely shocked. It's rare.

As an oldster, amazing to see the cycle of the US first having lots of unions (years of prosperity 1950s & 60s), then hating on unions with union support declining (1990s-2000s), and now hearing the rallying cry that we need more unions. There's a reason unions came into existence in the first place. But then we don't appreciate something until it's gone...

Gen Z and Millennials desire a more balanced and purpose-driven approach to work. They encourage companies to adapt to new values centered around their employees and focus on their mental health and overall well-being. As a result, employers are changing to attract and maintain this young workforce.

For example, some jobs provide their workers with unplanned mental health days a year, and the team is regularly reminded to take breaks and prohibited from doing any work on their days off.

The ones calling Gen Z and Millennials lazy aren’t really seeing the full picture here. Young people aren’t slacking right now but bringing a much-needed whiff of fresh air into the rigid work culture.

I had a master 3D model database I built, think common models for fasteners, brackets, etc. Just so happens the other designers use it in their designs for importation, but the software just directs to my database. Similar to a hyperlink but with a model instead of text. When I left I deleted the database off my computer and they wiped it as I thought they would. 90% of the designs in the plant referenced my database and were now missing parts. Oh well. Shouldn't have pissed me off.

Something kinda similar in a way. My company was outsourcing all manufacturing overseas which meant moving all the equipment and everyone would be laid off. I ran a large computer driven machine that required me to put in a password to prevent unauthorized people from running it. I received a phone call two months later asking me if I remembered the password, if not it would require a service technician from Germany to come reinstall software and reset the password at $35,000 for a service call (sounded like robbery to me). All I could tell them is "I used to know the password when I was employed by them".

Nothing wrong in that. They didn’t appreciate your efforts, so f**k them. You take your contributions with you and offer them to the highest paying competitor. Oh, and block all the numbers from your former employer, unless you decide if they want you to reinstall your programming, they’re going to pay you an astronomical consulting fee to do so. Otherwise, they can go f**k themselves—-a process they started when they fired you.

My project management office went without a manager for almost a year - no issues. So our higher-ups decided to get rid of the office and move us to other units. My current supervisor told me to just stop working on projects, as our leadership clearly didn’t believe that the project managers were important. I am the only one left from the original office, everyone else has quit. Projects are not moving forward, we are out of legislative compliance, and my supervisor told leadership I was too busy with my new assignments to work on any projects. My supervisor told me it serves them right for being so shortsighted and not appreciating their employees. I love my supervisor!!

Been there done that. We went without a manager for 3/4 months, our sales starting improving. New manager was hired and was given credit for the increased sales that started before they were working for the company.

I had all the classic signs of a "heart attack" but I looked at the clock and saw that Urgent Care (co-pay $30) was closed so I would have to go to the ER (co-pay $500 after $2000 deductible). I decided just to go to sleep and hope that I woke up in the morning.

A lot of politicians and CEOs need to really study history and see what happens when you push the majority of your country around for too long. The French Revolution is a great starting point since it's the most well known (for this kind of context) but it's by no means alone. Eventually people drag you out of your office and do unspeakable things to you in the streets. And by unspeakable, I mean nobody in a street full of thousands saw a damn thing. That's not a prediction, it's history.

My Dad tried to claim that a minimum wage is not supposed to be a living wage. My ever so thoughtful husband fought him on that and showed him sources that said no, the minimum wage was created exactly to be a living wage. That was the whole point. Average rent in the US is 2000. If you were to apply for the rental right now they will expect you to make 3x rent to qualify. So you need to make a minimum of 6k a month. 6k*12=72k a year. Need to make about 32 an hour. Even jobs requiring an associates degree or certifications in my area are barely paying 20/hr (and rent here is expensive)

There are lot of contributing factors, but a lot of it is misuse of funds/power. California had a state teachers union walkout a few years ago because a raise was not even budgeted for teachers, but the people determining where the money went all got fat raises. The education system is so corrupt.

Add charter schools to the mix. They can apply to get all sorts of money to pay for their start-up costs. The folks that own and run them have very little oversight on how they spend money. Jimmy Joe Bob Bankroll can hire Mrs. Bankroll and all of his family for different jobs at whatever salary he deems 'fair.' Then, enroll some students and the student funding that would have gone to a public school goes to Jimmy Joe Bob's endeavor instead. However, the charter school can turn away any students that they don't deem cost effective -- y'know, the handicapped kids, the ones from poor families, etc. They can stay at the now struggling public school. With cherry picking done, Jimmy Joe Bob can advertise that his school has such fantastic test scores compared to the public school, earning him even more choice families. Then, partway through the school year, Jimmy Joe Bob can close the school, and take off with the money, few repercussions, and little accountability. Fun!

But you still find people insisting that raising the minimum wage in the US will raise fast food burger prices. Maybe we need to stop prioritizing huge faceless corporations’ record profits year-over-year and start prioritizing the lives and happiness of the humans that work to make that corporation possible. What’s the point of having a job if you can’t survive off it?

I have been saying the same thing for decades. I’m a boomer btw (1960). It’s NOT the “suits” at corporate who are the ones making those record profits for the company. They’re actually just a lot of wasted space and wasted money that periodically comes up with incredibly stupid ideas that will never work, will only make the lower level employees’ jobs harder, and will quickly be abandoned—-who then get praise, a promotion, and a fat raise for it, while the lower level employees get the sob story about no money for raises in this year of record profits. It’s the front line and assembly line employees who are the REAL moneymakers for the company. THEIR efforts are what made those record profits, not those of the a*****e “suits”, but they never ever get any of the benefits for it. Instead they just get continually s**t on and called lazy, ungrateful, and all other kinds of unfair and cruel names, especially when they try to ask for something back for all their efforts, to which THEY should be entitled to get, NOT the f*****g “suits”.

In the US , I work full time 45 hrs a week have been at my office job almost 20 years. Got myself out of debt because my uncle died & left me some money. Used some of that money to do much needed improvements to my house because I could not afford them on my salary. I also have a disabled spouse. I can not afford to go to McDonalds and buy us dinner because I don't see the value in spending my hard earned money for dinner for 2 at a fast food place & spending 30 bucks. When I can make the same meal at home for 5 bucks. My company made Billions during Covid & even now, but I needed a relative to die to get out of debt. BTW last year I made over 2 million for the company but they are not sure they have money for bonuses. The problem is corporate greed

In European countries, the government keeps a rein on companies and lets them know what the bottom line is. If they don't meet those expectations, they can take a hike. The American government at almost all levels supports the goals of capitalism which emphasize the increase of company wealth even if it comes at the expense of workers. It is just BS.

I was refused a promotion to a supervisory position because I didn't have a degree. I pointed out that I was an NCO in the military and had headed my own divisions, so clearly I had the experience. The guy that made the decision said well there are some things you can learn from college you don't get from experience. I asked for one example. He couldn't give one, so I quit.

After retiring from teaching for 30+ years, I decided to take a half time job as an educational assistant in a special needs classroom. I am very knowledgeable/experienced in teaching kids with reading problems. The district started me at year one on the salary schedule. When I questioned it, I was told that despite my experience as a teacher, I did not have experience in educational assistant duties such as recess supervision, copying papers etc. I pointed out that I was providing all reading instruction for this class, did my own lesson plans, assessments etc. I was essentially doing a teacher's job for an assistant wage, but expected I would be given at least some my years of experience. The response was that I was obviously overqualified for the position and the administrator that hired me should not have done so.

I flipped burgers. Had some good laughs on the job. I guess it depends who you work with. It only takes one brown nosing back stabber to spoil the work place. One day the delivery lad was palette jack surfing with a load of eggs, he lost it and rammed straight into the bosses AMG Mercedes. No camaras back then and he hit the driver side the boss never saw it till he could place where it happened. We had to cover for about 3 dozen eggs but we got the money from the tip jar.

We had a labor shortage because of dramatically reduced immigration during and after covid, not because nobody “wanted to work”. Pay rates go up when labor is short supplied. Thems the breaks, corporations.

What's needed is fewer million & billionaires who love 500 million dollar yachts. Besides, until recently, many people claimed unions are the problem with the country by being too greedy.

Yeah, millennials want to know the wages and benefits before we start a job. Why is that funny? The fact that this is a cultural punchline is the actual joke here. “Silly humans, wanting to earn a living wage so they can afford and sometimes even enjoy their lives. Pathetic.” 🙄

I am already seeing some of it in the US. In a nutshell people buy less of the stuff you don't need. First it was stores whose entire inventory was not 'necessary'. Like the local party store that just sold balloons / plates / wrapping etc for parties. Later it started being places like Bed Bath and Beyond that has some stuff you need and stuff you don't but just about anything you actually need you could find cheaper at some other store. My local mall has a LOT of empty spaces from closed stores. The four jewelry stores that used to occupy the primo intersection near the entrance / food court are gone, as is the anime collectables store.

Basically the same position was stated in another post about 70 & 80 year olds being the ones to be able to effect change (disproportionate representation in the government) and that was upvote. One of the three reasons college has become so expensive is that over the last few decades, conservatives in state legislatures have quietly yet dramatically cut financial support for higher ed. So colleges have hiked their rates as a result. Remember that the next time you vote for your state legislators. (The other two reasons are growing demand to attend college and huge investment in student services.)

Oh damn. I just googled $9/hr 2000 vs 2023 and it’s $16.08 today. I made $9/hr in my mid-late 20s and considered myself barely solvent. I put away $100/month by not having a car and never eating out, and never buying anything new. I used the money as a down payment for my house in my early 30s… but it was only 5% down as that was back before the real estate bust and they were giving mortgages away left and right. No way in hell you’re able to buy a free-standing house for anywhere near $16/hr wage today. A condo maaaaybe if you saved up for a decade and got really lucky. We need a whole lot more affordable housing.

A Boomer I know still thinks that you must "pound the pavement" to get a job, meaning you go from place to place expecting someone to speak with you in person and hand you an application to fill out. I don't think they've done it this way for decades but it does not matter to this person. If you're sitting home on your computer looking for work, you're not really looking for work. You're being lazy.

It's only 2022 in part of the US. In Alabama it's 1922. The klan has lost some power, but the conservatives are running the show.

Encouraging child labor is actually a big GOP thing right now in the US, Alabama being one of the states actively passing legislation around this. We're a literal corporate dystopia at this point.

Don’t you remember a few years ago when a conservative politician (can’t remember his name) bemoaned the fact that the US has strict child labor laws? Looks like his conservative cronies fixed that “problem” for him. We cannot have a return to child labor, ffs. This s**t need to be nipped in the bud NOW!

I’m late gen x or xennial (born 1978) and won’t be able to buy a house until my mum dies and we sell the one she lives in, which is where I grew up. It’s a sad state of affairs to have a single old lady living in a massive house with a big garden whilst a family of four pays £2K/month rent for their very normal house. My parents bought the house in 1983… on one salary!!

$200,000 in 1992 is $438,590 today with inflation (not $1.2 million - dayum your parents got lucky). Which is about what a tiny starter home costs. You can probably get a condo for less than your rent BUT you have a lot of extra fees with condos. We need more affordable housing.

Do some basic maths. With interest rates around 5% their annual repayments would have been $10000, something over $20000 today. How much is your rent again?

    Joey Marlin

2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

When mortgage rates peaked at around 16% (some years ago) my mortgage, in today's money, would be £8,500 a month. The amount I earn today wouldn't come close to covering it and yet I somehow managed back then as my salary was good in comparison. People aren't wrong about the growing gap between house prices and salaries sadly. The rent problem is partly that houses you own cost more money for upkeep than when you rent as that's on (at least in my country) the landlord. The maintenance costs can be astronomical. Replacing or repairing things like windows, doors, roofs, guttering, painting etc... all of these things have to be factored in. I say that looking at my 12 year old windows knowing that some of them need to be fixed and I need a new front door (at least £700 and that's if we fit it - which fortunately we can). That's part of the reason people can't always get a mortgage despite being able to pay more in rent, lenders want people who can keep the property in good repair and they will factor that in even if they don't say so.

Living "in a state of nature" is kinda how the human body is / is "designed" (to use the religious metaphor). We are "meant" to be able to live like this. The reason for corporate slavery etc., and economy is to build wealth so that our lives can be "better" ie so we can get back to the hawaiian dream AND have a car, fancy house, etc. Remember those hawaiians did not have aircraft, internet, electricitiy and running water. If you are OK with living in a "state of nature" then good, go do that, because you actually can. However, if like me you want to be able to step on a plane and go visit another country for a week, and not take a year to travel there by reedboat , well... then unfortunately you need a modern economy. Sad, I know.

I feel you are missing the point. It's not about not wanting more, settling for less. It's about efficient work organisation that makes room for the important stuff (socializing, sports, culture, creativity). But religious people disliked that because they consider that to work is to be pious. This has served the capitalists of the world. We have never produced as much and as efficiently, way way WAY more than we could possibly consume. We got machines to do the heavy lifting, and it should have afforded us time to do other things but it hasn't. Because it was more important to put people to work and produce still more. There are precious few industries and workers who actually contribute to the improvement of modern society. Innovation should serve humanity, not capitalism.

Easy to look up, “ 2.1. That’s the replacement rate, meaning each woman would, on average, need to have 2.1 children for a generation to exactly replace itself. In 2022, the U.S.’ fertility rate was around 1.7 children per woman.”

You get up in your boss’s face and demand your paycheck, or they best know you’ll be suing their asses. (Sometimes the advice is bad or ill-motivated, but usually we’re trying to help you! I get that not being able to buy a house genuinely sucks and I’m not trying to minimize that, but just FYI that doesn’t hold a candle to true poverty, which we also have an abundance in the US. Like, “you live in a 2 bedroom with 20 relatives” kind of poverty; “you cannot buy new shoes even at Goodwill” poverty; “your parents have gotten good at doing stitches and casts at home” poverty; “you scrounge for food in dumpsters” poverty. We have that aplenty.

That’s when you abandon the delivery truck in the middle of the highway with the doors wide open and the keys in a nearby field and run for shelter.

Um. Hello, amazon customers...this is your doing. Your entitlement is why this happens. Don't get surprised when your vanilla scented power bank isn't there in two days and Amazon will be less likely to do things like this.

Dear Gen Z, from a Boomer, please succeed where we failed. Unions that work, healthcare that is for everyone, paid vacations and reasonable hours and wages. Trust, I want you to have all this- unite and get past the 2-party system where nothing gets done. The US needs an overhaul.

So, not on the same level, but I worked at a law firm in the 80s. An attorney brought in $250,000 in business that year. They gave her a $3000 bonus. She quit. Started her own firm. Greed has been around forever.

Who timestamps like this in the first place? This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. If you have proof you were at work as required, and they refuse to pay for it, let it go for a few months and sue the ever-living sh*t out of them.

Gotta love the timestamps. This is how I proved that a bus that left me - a disabled woman - alone in the dark in freezing December temperatures, was early. I tweeted the bus company to complain, they never responded. So I contacted the council dept that regulates them. That got some video footage from the bus, showing me at the side of the road, trying to flag it down, timestamped as it leaving late. Twitter timestamp proved I was early. I got absolutely nothing from them, but I like to imagine they got quite the slap-down from the regulators. Hopefully fined. Timestamps are great for CYA
