We all have our secret shames. Guilty little skeletons in the closet that we would never dare to confess to even our closest friends. Well, not when sober, at least.

The great thing about the internet is its anonymity. Behind the protection of a screen, people can feel liberated to say things they never would in face-to-face conversation, and really say what they mean. Of course, it goes both ways and this can also lead to all kinds of bullying and abuse, but that's for another post.

This post is all about getting it off your chest and owning up to past wrongs. While confessing anonymously to randoms on the internet is hardly taking responsibility for one's actions, the very act of confession can alleviate feelings of guilt and help people to get on with their lives. From the hilariously trivial to the actually quite profound, these confessions will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, and might even make you reflect on your own past transgressions.

So scroll down below to check out the sordid details for yourself, and let the therapy begin!

According to an article in Scientific American, any type of open and truthful disclosure reduces stress and helps individuals come to terms with their behavior. "It is not coincidental that some of the most powerful people or institutions in many cultures encourage people to confess their transgressions," they write. "And there is very strong evidence that writing about upsetting experiences or dark secrets can benefit your mental and physical well-being."

Just this year, the next town over from me flooded. I didn't lift a finger to help. Then the Zoo next to that flooded and I was like "Oh no! What can I do to help the poor parrots?!". I am fully aware this is an irrational and morally dubious reaction, but my I have to force myself to remember to care about humans, my first instincts take care of it with animals.

"First, simply putting emotional turmoil into words changes how we think about it. Giving concrete form to secret experiences can help categorize them in new ways. For instance, when we translate emotional experiences into words and stories, we start to think about them in a simpler, less menacing context. There is no solid evidence to explain this phenomenon, but it most likely occurs because talking or writing about a disturbing event helps us understand it better. And things we do not understand cause greater anxiety."

People can be toxic, and "family" are people too... I never understood that thing of forgiving anything "because they're family"... if they're c***s, they're c***s... family or not... and sometimes, the best one can do, is to be away from family...

It was so sad to go there and listen to those lies everyday. I did learn Deutsch but i dont speak it anymore. She died lonely. I should have stayed there, but it was already too late.

This is terrifying, I worked with a girl who was always 'super happy', she committed suicide 3 days before her wedding. I've been suicidal on & off for 20 years, but going through the pain of losing someone I very much liked has kept me from doing something stupid. Ppl don't really recoup from that pain that's left behind, and I hope you know how devastating your death would be for your family and friends OP. Please see a Dr. about maybe getting on a Rx to help with the symptoms and maybe therapy. Please.

Knowing I could open my door, arms and heart to another doggo is the only way i coped. Didn't stop grieving but it helps change some of the focus. Miss every pet I have ever had and always will.

It’s heartbreaking when a beloved pet dies, even if you haven’t had them very long. I lost an 8 month old kitten I’d had since she was 8 weeks old, and I had to go home for the rest of the day immediately after getting the call. She was at the vet to be spayed, normal procedure (her littermate brother had been neutered the week before and was just fine), only no one knew she had an underlying heart condition. She went into cardiac arrest during the surgery and died on the table. That was 4 years ago, and I still think of her. She was a sweet little clown, and I had been looking forward to 20 years of her antics making me smile.

One more for affirming the normalcy! My girlfriend requires some alone time each week to just process her own thoughts. She desires it. I don't usually want it...but I've learned I need it my own self too. We miss each other when we're apart, but the consequences and fall out when we don't make that space is always worse.

That is wonderfully supportive of you. I feel the same way as your girlfriend does, especially now that we have two kids and both work full time - I need some alone time to not have to speak to anyone or listen to anyone but just be alone with my thoughts. Unfortunately my husband has a very hard time understanding that and takes it personally. Even if he says he understands and supports me, he will be mopey and sad. This is very difficult to deal with. You are doing a great job or letting her determine what she needs and supporting her.

In a house full of family and animals, the house is boisterous and lively, and even though it's a fun place to live, I love to put on some headphones and go for a walk, sometimes for three or four hours. But this indifference towards kids and portraying kids on bored panda as if they are not worthy of love is horrible to me. I love animals. I love my cat. But my kids are the most amazing creatures I have in my life. And I absolutely adore my nephews. They are part an important part of me and I would do anything for them. No, because usually we use that space. It might be a relative or an unlucky stranger. If we ask for rent it is the minimum. Also that is where we keep our sauerkraut and other pickles. Also we keep spiders and mushrooms.

I have two lights in the bedroom, one main light and one just beside my bed. First I turn both of them on, then I turn the big one off, then I sprint onto bed and turn off the little one. Problem solved!

Taking a day for self care and a mental break is *not* a bad thing. It'll help you in the long run at your job. You don't have to tell your boss why you're taking a sick day, but just know that you're not bad for needing to.

Me too. The way I look at it is that people will always prioritize other people when it comes to providing help. Animals just get left behind to fend for themselves, and some cultures still don’t consider them as sentient creatures (which they most obviously are). I donate exclusively to animal charities, which tend to manage on shoestring budgets anyway, yet do some amazingly wonderful work. My first thought in a disaster is “What about the animals?”

In Las Vegas in the 70s, I was too young to get into casinos. Back then The Strip was lined with p**n shops and I went in and out of all of them. I couldn't afford the prosthetic leg, so I bought the eye for $10. Friends have taken that eye in its velvet jeweler's box and set it on the window sill in countries all over the world. There's a piece of paper to note the date and country.

It's so true. I tend to stay well away from most fandoms, because there's always a few really nasty ones who will make your life miserable because you don't ship their ship, or something similar. Had one really bad experience, and I never went back. To any fandom. In fact, it totally ruined the series for me. So, thanks random b**** on the internet for destroying something that made me happy and made me feel like I belonged! :D

It is a year ago this Memorial Day weekend (2019) that my beloved Flüf escaped out a 2nd story window, during an outside party with loud music, that scared him, I'm sure. I put up signs, I still have them up offering a reward. I miss him dearly, our entire family of 5 does. No cat could ever replace him. He is a Silver to Black tail Persian/Himalayan with Blue eyes that I am afraid someone just kept because he is beautiful. Flüf is microchipped but I never got a phone call and I checked with the local shelters as well.

No! Maybe the neighbor kid let him out. Maybe he's a houdini like one of my cats was. Maybe a latch broke on a door and no one realized. That's really judgmental to assume the owners don't care for it. I utterly understand the poster's desire that the owner not be found, but very selfish of you to suggest they don't even try because the owners don't deserve to have the cat back.

Yes. It's even normal for most people to only like 20 in 100 (or 110) people. Let anone highschool kids in their puberty. I must add though: there's definitely a difference between students I really LIKE, students that are okay, and students that I truly dislike. And even they can be interesting, depending on the type of behaviour that make me dislike them.

I don't feel I have to like all of my students. I just have to treat them equal and fair. Hell, I have a student who openly tells me that she doesn't like me and I told her the feeling is mutual, but she knows I treat her just the same as everyone else and she has to do the same amount of work as she does for teachers she likes.

If I am honest, as a teenager I was an a*****e too. I apologized myself at my mother around 25 when I realized what I done around that time. Most teenagers are. It is not their fault, it is just this age. You have to find your way and you do mistakes.

my brothers gf got pregnant and lost it. I was secretly pleased cause they don't have their s**t together and live in a trashy apt. with no ambition to make their life better. his gf is also not right in the head. I am glad they lost it cause it would have made mess out of their already messy life. however, I'm curious if it would have given him a reason to change.

I agree with the concern, but shouldn't the babies life being messed up been a higher priority? I mean, that is the job of being a parent, teaching your kids how to be better people than you yourself are. (I have also seen parents who never change, and parents who changed everything because of their child)

You can only live the life you have . . . having a feeling about something is not like committing a crime. She'll life her life. You can have your own feelings. Not everyone else's news will make you happy or be your concern. Comfort who you can and you don't have to confess everything you feel to the world.

There are some "feminists" (who are not actually feminists) who see traditionally feminine things such as being a wife or mother as bad things. They're not bad if you choose to marry and have children, they're only bad if you're forced to do those things

Can we just agree that a woman can be a feminist and have a husband and kids? One does not negate the other. She can also be a housewife and cook an elaborate breakfast every morning for her family. Feminism means the right to choose how you want to live your life and being happy with said choice.

It's not that easy to be successful and smart and find a man who can handle your intellect. Not impossible, just not easy. The older the woman gets, the harder it becomes too. I feel for her. I'm lucky I found mine early.

Ugggghhh yeah that's it lol. Maybe it's this attitude? It's very off putting to have to declare how smart you are. Most men enjoy intelligent conversation just not with a know it all who thinks they are so smart that it intimidates men..... Because it doesn't.

Sorry, this is funny. But easily understandable, ten years of no meat and you eat a burger...it isn't a bad decision, nor a good one, just a decision made. Your stomach and body however are not used to it and any change in the diet can have that effect temporarily. I hope the car was easily cleanable.

A friend of mine (vegetarian, not vegan) decided to drop out meat (and fish) because it made his stomach feel weird. Nowadays, if he eats any meat, he vomits and has diarrea. Your organism "forgets" how to process carnic products and those are the consequences.

Not meaning to diminish the real problems re: men not being allowed to cry, but I'm a woman and I cry at movies too and I have a terrible shame around it. Maybe because a lot of people tease me - because they know it bugs me. Also because I will cry at even very badly done scenes. I wish I didn't. Anyway, at least when people tease me they do it lightheartedly, I know it would be way harder if I were male.

There is an odd cultural dynamic I struggle with. My old-fashioned English family do not think men who cry are sissy or anything. Its just they think they are manipulative, unstable and probably very untrustworthy. And that crying is entirely unhelpful in every situation. But my Iranian family don't trust anyone who cannot cry at the correct social prompts, as if not crying shows you do not care at all. Its a tricky path to tread.

this is quite interesting - never thought of it that way - but you cry or don't cry someone is always doing something wrong - same way with if you smile or don't smile, if you are laughing or not - people are always doing something wrong in the eyes of others - no one seems to adopt the 'live and let live' attitude anymore

OMG, I SWEAR THAT my sister did this to me. She bet me 100 dollars that I couldn’t finish the 1000 piece puzzle. I finished it all but one piece while she was at a sleepover. I went CRAZY trying to find the last piece. I looked under the couch, in the couch, under the table and still couldn’t find it. I gave up and the next day she came over and was so happy that I didn’t finish it. After five minutes of searching she found it...UNDER THE TABLECLOTH. HOW WOULD IT GET THERE WITHOUT SOMEONE PLACING IT THERE!! I was so shook and accused her of putting it there, but she denied all allegations. To this day, she still hides the last piece in random places around the house just so she can put it in.

Oh man, in our family this would cause terrible distress. My sister-in-law gets almost violent when puzzles are involved. We once spent like an hour obsessively trying to find the piece for this one spot and everyone was digging through the piles the other puzzlers were sorting out and there were threats regarding what might happen to any person who was found to be hiding it. Tempers were super high. We finally found it elsewhere in the puzzle because it had apparently fit with two edges but in the wrong spot.

If someone doesn't have a router password it's no more difficult than changing your own. They show in a list of nearby routers.

In order to do that you would have to use his computer to change the name of the router and change the password. In order to get access to his computer remotely, you would have had to send a successful phishing email with a malicious link/document or used a pineapple device to mask his router and hope he logged into it by mistake. Either way, you committed a felony.

What? That's nonsense. If the router signal is detected by your computer and you know the password and admin name, you can change any setting you want on the router. Routers settings are not tied to a computer, anyone with the pw and admin name can change it.

Agreed. Also, “Friends” was the worst sit-com I’ve ever briefly suffered through. 1.5 episodes (back to back, in syndication) of watching arguably the (scripted to be) dumbest people on TV do stupid things was more than my brain could handle. Turned it off, no regrets.

Okay, this is SUPER embarrassing, but I am not religious. I don't have a god or anything and have never really felt the need for one. But if I really need/want something, then I "pray" to what I've abbreviated at WOT (whatever's/whoever's out there) because on the off-chance that there is a deity or supernatural power of some kind, I don't want to pick just one that I think is "right." Just saying that sounds really disgusting but yeah.

Do NOT tell your life's story because of someone's off hand question. Reserve your life story for your friends that know and love you. You owe NO ONE a full history or explanation of anything in your life. Too many times I ask, "How's it going" and people want to tell me their life story. It's a greeting, not an invitation to lay out your family history. Keep it shallow 'til you know someone . . .

I've listened to a lot of Esther Perel (because she's brilliant) and it really sounds like a lot of people cheat not because they ever meant to, but because they just happened to meet someone they clicked really well with and got swept away by how good it feels to have someone new expressing interest in you. I don't know how common it is percentage-wise because her sample size is only the people who regret the transgression and seek her out - but it definitely happens.

Actually, touching a baby bird to put it back in it's nest will NOT result in the mother abandoning it. Birds have a worse sense of smell than humans do, they wont smell us on their chick. The "rumor" is entirely inaccurate, although maybe the parent was trying to teach the chick to survive.

I totally agree. Being a parent and being a worker are two different things. In this case though, i would go an extra mile to try ''correcting'' whatever reason i had to let her go.

The alphabet song is not really a thing in the UK and possibly many countries so why are people being downvoted just because they don't need to use it and probably weren't ever taught that way? If children are being taught the alphabet phonetically, which recently had a resurgence in popularity in some countries, there's no way they are singing the alphabet song.

Wine disagrees with my stomach, but middle aged moms LOVE to force wine on me at parties and won’t accept the answer of “I don’t like wine.” So now my standard response is “Wine makes me s**t my pants.” If the person laughs, then I know I have a new friend. If they make a face & change the subject then at least I won’t have another glass of wine waved under my nose.

*Hands up* This was me too. I was socially awkward so would make up lies to get a conversation going. I was convinced everyone else had a more interesting life than me (mostly they did) and just wanted to be a part of things. One day it simply got too much remembering all the c**p I'd said and I made a private vow not to lie again. Worked out pretty well, I only lie to annoying work clients now. I occasionally find myself slipping back in social situations (exaggerating truths or changing the source of stories to suit me) and have to re-double my efforts, but just that act of committing to not lying was enough get me 99% on the right path.

Metalhead here. I do the same. I was recently on a Backstreet Boys concert, mostly for nostagical reasons, but the show was so good. Some of my friends couldn't understand how it added up, but just because I prefere Metal, doesn't mean that I can't or am allowed to listen to other stuff. If other people have an opinion on that, they should get a life. =) Good music is good music and only you can decide that for yourself!!

Normal. Dogs are amazing companions, but puppies are absolutely horrible. The only good thing about them is that they are cute and for a serious person like myself, it's by no means a redeeming vice. I couldn't wait for my dog to grow up and start behaving as if I actually spent all those thousands of hours training him. Even though we are not entirely compatible, he's for the most part great. When I remember him as a puppy or an adolescent however, it makes me sick. People who think that the best period of a dog's life is when it's little, never ever had a dog!

It depends how you make it. In Croatia pizza is usually salty and a pineapple would totally not fit with the way we make pizza. In Korea, on the other hand, most shops make pizzas kind of sweet, so pineapple is not strange or bad at all.

I have a very dry skin type and every time I wash my hands, I MUST apply hand cream afterwards. It can be a pain sometimes. I still wash my hands every time because I wouldn't allow myself to touch anything otherwise. If I can do it, you can too. Especially if it's a public bathroom. Even if you didn't touch your private parts at all, even if you didn't have the decency to pull the water, you still touched that door to lock yourself in. So many people did. And if you're one of those who don't wash their hands, imagine how many more people like this are out there, using that same toilette as you. I dunno, I'd feel too dirty.

I've never eaten a pop-tart and don't plan on changing that any time soon.

I totally prefer them untoasted. Tried that once. It's too hot. Not very enjoyable. Love 'em room temperature <3

They're also good refrigerated. Brown sugar cinnamon, yum!

Me neither. Cultural differences. Didn't even know you were supposed to toast them. But I'm not sure I actually know what they are. What I ate looked like some kind of crispy biscuit with chocolatey topping. It was written "pop tart" on the package, so I assumed. Can't imagine toasting that up, really.

They taste much better toasted, just don’t eat them straight away or you will burn your tongue.

For me, it depends on the flavour. Some flavours taste better cold, some taste better toasted.

They are good cold. Any time I toast them they just end up burning me and don't taste any better for it.

If you live together, you start sharing incomes and whoever gets more money doesn't really matter, because it's the same in the end. You both profit from it.

You can! Get in touch with a (no kill) shelter and find a new, loving home for him! You're not happy, he's not happy, go do something about it.

you can unadopt your dog, advertise for a new family. It won't matter that the dog is young or old. My family used to adopt dogs when I was a kid, we had young ones, old ones, cats, birds, rabbits, etc. You shouldn't feel guilty that the situation changed, whether you can no longer afford it or you just don't want it any more, equally valid reasons to rehome a pet. But please, PLEASE, don't leave it on the side of the road somewhere or something like that, take the time to rehome it right, you'll be guilt free and can be happy for it then, it'll be worth it in the end.

Look for a good house for the poor animal. They deserve love, not indiference!

Maybe you're just not a dog person. Lots of things seem like a good idea at the time, then don't actually work out. Find a good home for the dog and don't repeat this portion of your life.

We had to do it too, because he started to be aggressive to our other dog. Horrible feeling..

The water doesn't disappear, you aren't wasting it. But you are wasting your money and it has to go through treatment again.

You absolutely can waste water! It either comes from a finite reservoir which may or may not re-fill next wet season (best case) or an aquifer which we have no way of re-filling in a human lifespan (worst case).

I mean, you can't really 'waste' water. It always is reused somewhere in some form on the planet. You are just wasting your money.
