As we experience our surroundings, we come to have questions about them and usually go above and beyond to seek answers. After all, learning about our world and understanding how it works propels humanity forward. At the same time, there are people who decide to put on rose-tinted glasses and create their own tiny naive bubbles to glide through life without a care in the world.

But even if ignorance may be bliss, it won’t get them very far at the end of the day. So jonallenmaking decided to ask Reddit users to open up about the moments somebody said something so ridiculous that it made them think, “This person is out of touch with reality.” Over 18.6K comments later, we get to be reminded there are plenty of folks out there leading very different lives from most of us.

From hilariously delusional to painfully upsetting, these stories serve as proof that no amount of logic will make these people realize what’s right in front of them. Bored Panda has collected some of the most perplexing answers from the thread, so keep scrolling and upvote as you go. And if you have any similar encounters to share, be sure to tell us about them in the comments!

"This Person Is Out Of Touch With Reality": 40 Delusional People Who Proved They Don’t Understand A Thing In This World A guy at a party was talking about how great technology was. I agreed. He then proceeded to talk about how there are people made of computer chips walking among us and we don't know who they are. I took the opportunity to say, "I know. You could be one of them." And walked away. I stared at him from across the room off and on the rest of the night. Good times.

I used to think that everyone else was a robot and I was the only human. I think this is quite common in children so out of embarrassment, I won't disclose the age I was when I stopped thinking this.

Tilt head slightly and look distracted for a second or two. Refocus on the person, reply "No, there aren't - and I'm not one." Then walk away. EDIT: changed to TILT because BP censored a male chicken. *sigh*

I find those people deeply offensive and insulting. I am Autistic (Asperger Syndrome, and you "woke" people can shut the f**k up about me calling it what it is, my right) and when people parrot that false claim from a single debunked "study" that was later proven to be a complete hoax, that vaccines cause Autism, it pisses me off on several levels. 1. I have had over 100 vaccines. I am 62 years old. I think that those vaccines played a part in my living this long. Even if they DID cause my Autism, which is do not believe for a second, I'd rather be Autistic and 62, than DEAD, or worse, before 18 from a preventable disease. 2. What those people are REALLY saying is this: "our DNA is perfect, therefore it HAD to be a vaccine that made my kid a f*****g r****d (I'm Autistic, so I have the right to use this word)", rather than accept that NO ONE KNOWS what actually causes most ASD conditions and syndromes. Yeah, I have no qualms about using the exact word the situation calls for.

For everyone who doesn't live in the US who can't understand why there are so many stupid people, republicans are doing everything they can to cut funding to public schools. They claim it is to reduce taxes, but if that was true they wouldn't be passing laws to redirect public school funds to "christian" private schools. Critical thinking skills are their worst enemy. Here in Arizona, the Republican-dominated state government has cut funding so much that teachers have to buy their own whiteboard markers for class. Each election, there are special propositions to temporarily increase taxes for residents of the wealthiest school districts. They pass every time. Now the republicans are passing laws to disallow these propositions from being on the ballot. There is nothing "christian" about these people. If it isn't obvious, it isn't religious people who benefit the most from these actions. It's the "1%" who pay the least taxes, and fund the majority of republican election campaigns.

When you ask me who are i'm scared of the most in the world the way it is right now,- racists, politicians, Karen's, etc-- it's the conspiracy people who scare me the most. There's just no logic or reasoning with them and they truly believe what they are saying. And then they go and vote or breed or teach. It's so scary. We don't need conspiracies anymore- companies and politicians will happily tell you what they're doing with a smile because there's no real consequence. Worry about that, not contrails.

"This Person Is Out Of Touch With Reality": 40 Delusional People Who Proved They Don’t Understand A Thing In This World A friend's uncle, who is a spiritual healer of some sort, claimed one day he would be known as the first man to cure cancer with "spiritual healing techniques" whatever that mean. The woman he "treated" stopped her treatments because she was "cured" and died inside six months. Apparently no one saw fit to bring that guy to justice. His explanation was : "She died from a different cancer that was at the same place with the same symptoms at the same time and the first cancer was hiding the second one so he couldn't treat her properly because, you know, I couldn't feel the second one...." I wish he would go to prison.

The problem is that these people choose to be treated by those people and refuse to be treated traditionally. They even sign the paperwork to make clear that it’s their intent. Legally, there’s nothing that can be done. Steve Jobs died the same unnecessary death and his estate certainly would have had the money to sue anyone involved if there were a point in doing so.

It would be nice if those they prey on others like this could go to prison for it, but I believe it all comes down to freedom of choice. You have the right to choose conventional/unconventional treatments regardless of what those outcomes might bring. :(

Well, it would be hard to prosecute. He didn't "prevent" her from getting treatment and how would you prove in court that she stopped treatment, solely based on that spiritual treatment? I get the frustration, but never confuse morality with legality. They are not equal nor analogs.

I'm an oncology nurse and you'd be amazed the number of people who want to go the natural route with vitamins and noni juice and bat wings soup (jk). And the number of people that have been told by family members to stop treatment and eat broccoli stems or whatever. I think these people are dangerous to the frightened and desperate. But there has to be some accountability as well. They choose to go these routes.

Those that believe that cancer can be cured by fresh fruit, waving coloured crystals around, praying, water's memory, or faith healers etc........... fine, but please, please, please also take the real medical advice and treatments too. Then we can debate which of the methods saved your life later hopefully, but never ever trust anyone who is trying to get you to put all your eggs into just their basket.

I watched my grandmother shove a load of books off of a shelf at the bookstore the other day because she wanted one that wouldn't come out. When she walked away and left a pile of them on the ground, she looked at me and said "It's okay, it's their job to pick that stuff up." Speaking from a retail experience, no it's not. You're just adding extra work.

My SO's mother did this to us one time. Although, she pulled a ton of books out of a discount bin and left them all over the floor as she was going through them. She started walking away and when my SO asked his mom if she was going to pick up the books she also said that it was ok to leave them because it was "their job to pick them up." My SO and I stayed and started picking up the books because that wasn't cool with us. She was shamed into helping, but complained the whole time.

I work in retail now- pet store... worst things customers do: -grab a can from the middle. Do they know I have to take all the cans out to re-face? ALL THE CANS ARE FRESH -grab a bag from one aisle and leave it in another cuz you found something better. sigh -leave your Starbucks on a shelf along with your candy wrappers -pull all the toys off the wall and just leave them on the floor. -pull out all the clothes and randomly put them back on the wrong hangers

I used to work in a national chain grocery store and my biggest pet peeve is when someone places a refrigerated or frozen item on a dry goods shelf. The first thing early shift employees do is make their rounds checking all the shelves... I've seen them sometimes with 2-3 shopping carts full of ruined products. My husband would roll his eyes at me for taking cold products I'd found sitting on a shelf back to the right department, I'd do that for years after I started working elsewhere. Now that I am disabled I unfortunately don't do it as often.

I’ve publicly called out people for this s**t, especially in places like Walmart where the treatment of employees should be considered illegal. When it comes from a fellow customer, and one who is well spoken and older, you should see how much they flounder and try to backpeddle when they’re chastised. They know they’re in the wrong, but businesses have been letting them slide for it way too long. I worked jobs like that when I was young, and had to take bad treatment from customers, so I know whereof I speak. I let them know it is NOT the employees’ job to to clean up after their laziness, and to just push the cart the extra three feet to the cart rack, or put stuff they decide not to buy back where they found it! I swear it’s like teaching badly brought up children how to act properly and think of someone else besides themselves.

It was a $150 tab with an incredibly demanding table. I work another job and I go to school full time, but whatever floats your boat.

I 100% agree and the worst thing is that they'd go absolutely Karen over such a scenario: these assholes condescendingly tell others to get "real" jobs but go absolutely insane in public when they don't get service immediately, no matter if it's at Starbucks or an auto repair shop. The whole, "I want it and I want it NOW" attitude towards the poor souls who actually work for a living is inexcusable. My mom used to complain endlessly about what was being cooked for dinner until my brother got fed up and told her, "If you don't like what we cook for dinner, then please feel free to make dinner yourself". Our mom had been displaying some nasty Karen tendencies until we started speaking up. Oh yeah, and any job is a real job to me, sex work included.

I treat "service" industry workers with the attitude that they are "professionals". In many cases they are there to take care of the chores I didn't feel like doing that day. Thanking them by treating them with respect and gratitude seems to make more sense than treating them like lesser citizens.

AND think that the workers should just do it for free. Even worse--servers are taxed as though they received tips whether they did or not. It is ENTIRELY possible, it happens, and it has happened to me that servers sometimes actually have to PAY for the PRIVILEGE of serving a**holes who refuse to tip!

Just another reason I would HATE tipping culture! It should be the people who hired you to work for them, that pay your wages- instead of staff having to rely on people who can be either outright assh*les or just having a bad day, in order to earn enough to live on!

I say "when" because people are getting so bad at tipping that there will be (and it's happening already) no more servers!!! Oh how I'll LOL at them then!!!

My daughter rents a condo where we (unfortunately) bought. Another owner told her she should buy a condo too. When my daughter snort laughed and mentioned that she was a struggling single parent with no way to save a down payment, the lady said she should ask us to help. We bought a crappy condo in a s**t area just to get into the market. Believe me, we have no extra money. But this lady was really upset that we couldn't help our daughter. She literally didn't get it.

Kind of like my old pharmacist when my son was born and she saw him for the first time. She practically gushed at me, "Oh, is that an ASIAN baby? You didn't tell me you were ADOPTING!" when she saw him (to answer the question, yes he is Asian. I'M half Chinese, my facial features are very obviously Chinese, and my now ex husband is Cambodian). She even asked my nephew, whom I raised and was four at the time, "Do you love your baby brother?". He looked her right in the eyes and, barely concealing his distaste for being repeatedly asked the same question from many others, simply said, "Yes". I guess she thought they maybe he too was adopted because although he's immediate family, he looks very Caucasian because his mother is very pale with green eyes and VERY pale blonde hair due to her family's Swedish descent.

In some states parents can get in trouble for student truancy. I used to think that was crazy but stories like this make me realize the parents are sometimes to blame.

I knew a girl that had graduated at law school, a friend (who was a lawyer) fixed her for a great entre level job at a top law firm my friend had left recently. When my friend found out she had turned the job down after he had stuck her neck out for her he called her. The reason "to many bends in the road to get to the office" Honestly the road has a few bendsin it but as my friend said, doesn't her car have a f8&*^ing steering wheel!!! Where we live there are hills and mountains any were you go the roads are winding I know another guy who didn't take a great job because it was a 70km round trip and his car was new and didn't want to wear it out.

My mother had multiple health issues and I cared for her by myself for years while her brothers judged and criticized and never once tried to help. After being out of work for a few months he decided he needed a simple job to keep him busy. This is why i hate arguing economics with older people. Because they start telling me s**t saying they know and i always end up asking "when was this? 30 years ago?". Usually its around that timeframe. Telling me how to do interviews and that you start at the bottom and work your way up when you haven't applied for a job in 30 years, then when i tell them that the world has changed, and none of that is true, just like we dont use fax anymore, they try to convince me that im wrong. Yes your experience from 30 years ago is obviously more real thant the s**t i did yesterday. Heck even if i move up at my retail job, my manager makes like $1.30 more. The world has changed, why is that so hard to believe.

My mum. She once told my husband - a guy that's been working to help support his struggling parents since he was 13 - that we should just have kids and God will provide for us. Her rationale was that she had seven kids and never once struggled. Thanks mum, we can't all just quit college to marry a multi millionaire a decade older than we are.

Everyday i become more convinced that people should be chemically sterilized until they are old enough to have children, At which point they must complete a parenting class which covers the basics of being a decent parent as well as covering what it costs to raise a child and the expected cost over the next 25 years (lets be real, 18 year olds are the new middle schoolers at this point), a class on time management and how to run a household, show that they have the financial means to AFFORD TO RAISE A CHILD, with savings set aside, backround checks, psych exams passed....at which point they will be granted a license to have ONE CHILD. The current bar of "find someone to sex" isn't working out anymore.

My grandmother once told me that marrying for love should be a second choice, that if I want a good life I should marry for money. I love that woman and miss her dearly, she immigrated from Germany during ww2 and her life was hard before then and for a while afterwards, but saying that in front of my grandfather who spent everyday working from the moment they stepped into Canada so she could be a stay at home mom was heartless. His estate was valued at 3 million dollars when he died so I guess she married for both, it just took a while.

Yeah no. God will provide for you, but you can't just sit in a chair on the beach waiting for money to fall out of the sky, you have to put in effort and He will simply help. And He also gave you a brain, He expects you to use it. When you run out of money, you stop having kids, it's that easy.

I don't even understand why people who can afford them buy the new phone the moment it comes out, I've never understood that. Your phone works fine. My own sister does this and asks me why I don't update mine when a newer model comes out. As long as it still works and doesn't have a cracked screen, it's fine for my needs.

"You know, if a baby is born underwater, it can live it's whole life underwater!" I laughed a bit because it's a fairly well known dark joke, but then told her not to joke about that stuff because our coworker was pregananant. She was confused when I told her not to joke. "It's not a joke, it's a fact!" After some debate, I learned she genuinely believes if a baby is born underwater, it will grow gills and learn how to breathe underwater. Same lady, 6mo later. "Yeah, I'm saving up right now to buy a car. I have my eyes on this great 2007 Holden" Her: "Why don't you just buy a new one?" Me: "I don't have a lot of money, I wouldn't be able to afford a new car. I'm stretching the limit with this one as it is." Her: "Ugh, it's not even that hard to afford things. Just budget!" We were on the same salary, but she sold drugs on the side, her grandpa paid her $200/month phone bill, and her mom gave her a $250 a week allowance. She was also GIVEN her car, by her parents, and was constantly complaining about how old it was and she wanted them to buy her a new one.

Because I was the only woman in the house, he thought I was supposed to do all the housework, including picking up after him and doing his laundry. Have a job, cash their checks (this was a while ago), pay their bills, shop, cook, and clean all their stuff, know how to change a fuse, plunge a toilet, etc. Take care of themselves, basically. She knew too many old men who couldn't make anything more complicated than cold cereal if their wife was sick or dead. She knew too many women trapped in loveless or outright abusive marriages because they didn't know where they could go or how they could live without a husband. If your spouse is in the hospital, left you, dead, whatever, you need to know that you can manage without them. And knowing that is empowering.

I think the biggest reason for this is social segregation of the rich and poor. Even if you learn about the real average income that is just an abstract number, and you can still tell yourself that the poor are doing something wrong to be poor. Require the rich to mingle with the middle and lower classes as part of their everyday lives, and they will be confronted with the fact that these people are no different from them except for the fact of not having been born into a rich family...

A reporter recently asked a number of Senators and Congressmen (both D and R) in the USA what they thought the average wage was in the USA; they all thought it was in the $100,000 range. Talk about being out of touch with reality.

Average is useless anyway. You have to look at the median. If you have nine people earning 50,000 and one earning 1,550,000, that average 200,000 salary means nothing. The median is still 50,000.

When the GOP did their new tax breaks for the rich, they said that the average middleclass income in America was $450,000 a year. I don't know where they live in this country, but people should find out and move to those states.

To be fair, I legit thought my family was rich when I was growing up because we were very well provided for, our parents always seemed to have the money to take us four kids on many vacations, and we got a lot of things less fortunate kids didn't get. I'd say we were spoiled but our parents deeply instilled gratitude and hard work into us from an early age. Turns out we weren't rich but comfortably upper middle class due to both of our parents being college graduates and extremely hard workers. They busted their asses to make sure we were happy, healthy, and safe.

In the 90s a lot of people from Russia immigrated to Germany. Their grandparents had been of German ancestry (WW2 shifted frontiers and regions changed sovereignity). They'd felt discriminated against in Russia and immigration was made easier for them. Now those same communities have a sizeable portion of right wingers who hate all those immigrants (especially from African or Arab countries) flooding the country and getting everything for free. 🤮

People get so angry at people who have money. If you're wealthy because you work 70-80 hours per week, then it makes sense that having to do chores you wouldn't normally have to do on top of that work would be stressful. Consider the reverse, if a person who normally does their own cleaning said to you "man I had to work 20 extra hours this week, it was brutal to get that and the laundry done" you would feel sorry for them.

I was in my local electronic spares shop, a lady walks in with what I could clearly see was a light bulb form a fridge light. She opened by saying, I'm not sure you will have this special bulb, it from my crystals that absorb the negative energy from the WiFi. She'd bought it from some place in peru and never turned it off and since she's had it everything electronic in her house worked better because the force of the crystals paired with the energy from the bulb clear the bad waves. The owner and I look at each other and just burst out laughing

I like pretty rocks. I hate this culture. I kinda hate diamonds because i think theyre boring, and i love colorful stones like lapis and opal. This is great from a price point of view because everyone wants diamonds, so theyre expensive, no one wants star Sapphires though, because they're cabochon cuts, and so despite them being mega cool, theyre dirt cheap. But it sucks from a supply perspective, since theyre unpopular, they're hard to find. So yeah, a lot if the time I end up in those weird shops and I hate it. Because the shop keeper always starts looking at me weird, and inevitably tried to converse with me asking about spiritual s**t, and im just like "man im just looking for a pretty rock...." And i think their whole thing is somewhere in between insanity and a scam. Worth mentioning that i dont just buy rocks either, i buy jewelry, cause i wanna wear it. And not align my chakras, and can you please stop looking at me like you want to induce me into your cult....

Actually, they WERE used for that initial purpose from way back before they had satellites and GPS systems, this was of course during the early days of the cold war and everyone was paranoid about the Russians(kind of like a certain political party of today). If they were for that purpose they'd be way more precise. The UK system narrows it down to 20-30 houses. Sometimes you can even tell which side of the street the house is on from the post code. But I suspect we'd still use GPS rather than a postcode lol.

My brother is a leftie. In my culture, giving something to someone with the left hand is seen as a sign of disrespect, so whenever he visited my grandma, she would slap his left hand, if he did anything with it. In school, when he was about 4, still learning how to write, his teachers would continually make him write with his right hand, sometimes telling him to copy his sister (twin and rightie). It got to a point that he started refusing to go to school. When my mum learnt what the teachers were doing, she went to the school and caused a scene. They never forced him to write with his right hand again. But my grandma refused to change. A*****e!

My Dad was a child in the 1930's. He was left handed and literally had it beaten out of him with a ruler. His right handed writing was illegible his whole life because he was fighting the freaking natural order of his body.

I was born lefty and my Greek-village-superstitious mother switched me to righty. My handwriting is abysmal (can't write cursive. I'm an old). There are some things that I'm more comfortable doing lefty including certain sports (but not others).

I‘m a leftie and I like to draw and write. I got quiet good at it over the years. It sometimes still happens that an elderly person is completely amazed that I‘m doing it with my left hand, as if it was some sort of Handicap or disorder.

I am left-handed, and I feel like my son would have been left-handed, but my mom watched him, and whenever he would pick a pencil up with his left-hand she would switch it to his right hand. Once I found out, I asked her to stop, but it was too late.

Is it because he’s not a real doctor in the first place he can make a tv show out of people going through addiction and mental illness and tell the world about it? “Dr Drew” too. I worked at a little all-local, all-organic grocery store for a bit. A lady comes in with a friend, they are looking at the eggs. She goes "Are these eggs organic?" "Well, they're not certified, but these are grown here in town by someone who feeds them a non-soy, non-gmo supplemental feed. But they're on pasture most of the time." "So they eat bugs." "Well, yes, quite a few of them, it's good for organic pest control in the gar..." (to her friend) "Those bugs could come from anywhere. This is why you have to ask the hard questions about your food, and really know what you're putting in your body. King Soopers has actual organic eggs."

"Organic" is certainly often used purely as a gimmick. However, there are independent, non-profit organizations such as Oregon Tilth which certify food as organic which can be trusted. I am more skeptical of USDA Certified Organic because the USDA is heavily lobbied by large agrobusiness corporations.

I hate the "organic" marketing scheme with a passion. During the one and only time my EX inlaws came to stay with us and visit they refused to eat the veggies I had made because they only ate "organic" foods and I really should be buying "organic" vegetables from the store. Instead of, you know, the ones I we were eating that I had personally started from seed and grown in my own garden.

This is why i hate organic. Most people dont even understand what something being organic means, much less that it is in no way synonymous with being healthy. Also as someone into chemistry, i hate the misuse of the word. I actually wonder how it got co-opted for this purpose. But yeah always remember, all organic, all natural, no pesticide, non GMO hemlock, will still definitely make you dead.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 "organic" "free range" and "cage free" are all marketing gimmicks as there really is no regulation on it. Funny how people get hung up on these buzzwords instead of actually taking the time to go see how the chickens are being handled by going local. Farmers are friends.

Free range is pretty well regulated in the EU. Which is why, currently, there are no free range eggs available from UK birds - there is bird flu around so all hens must be kept indoors so they've had to stop calling them free range. You're spot on about those terms in the US though unfortunately.

So one night a bunch of us are at a restaurant getting dinner and he proceeds to tell us how if he can't get a girlfriend, his backup plan is buying a mail order bride from Ukraine. Says he has it all planned out. When we all try explaining that mail order brides are essentially human trafficking, he was devastated. His whole plan for getting a girl was ruined, lol. Eventually he blocked us all from his social media and stopped talking to us, but that was more because he couldn't stand that we wouldn't bend over backwards for his every whim

I’ve always thought “human trafficking” was more specifically against their will, or with coercion under false pretenses, or not allowing them the freedom to leave. I’m sure some brides from the old world were trafficked but I’d assume that many were legitimate immigrants.

The grandparent of the child I nanny says things that make me think this all the time. My nanny family doesn’t use any physical punishment at all. Well she said if we don’t start spanking the kids a (3 and 1 year old) they’ll become unruly demons. Despite the no spanking policy she still spanks the 3 year old. We stop letting her babysit after that. She still wants to babysit and after a lot of begging we finally let her have the 3 year old for the weekend. Well the 3 year old came back and was obviously spanked. Also despite her being potty trained she came back in a diaper too. Somehow she managed to undo days of potty training in a weekend. Now the 3 year old is back in diapers full time because she refuses to use the potty now. Most older generations are so out of touch with reality when it comes to childcare.

I'm sorry, it really gets my hackles up when someone has a bad encounter with an older person and trashes an entire generation of "older folks" based on that one encounter. Likewise, I feel the same when someone says something disparaging against the "younger generation." As an "elder millennial," I sit in that transitional period where both generations have their valid points. That being said, I agree, who is really in the wrong for continuing to send a child to someone who physically punishes them, so much so that it causes regression in their potty training?

Well, that's a sad story (speaking as a child whose father never missed a chance to use the belt), but one person doesn't constitute most older generations." Plenty of us older parents and grandparents still know how to read and do educate ourselves on modern ideas in childrearing.

Regression in a child of that age in those circumstances is a sign of trauma and abuse, not just “spanking.” The parents should be publicly flogged for allowing their child to be placed for that length of time with someone who has proven to use physical correction. If you allow abuse to happen you’re just as culpable as the abuser.

No, it is not the entire generation. It is a few rotten apples who think their way is the only way. I cannot believe that they let her have the baby for an entire weekend. I would not have let her have her for an overnight! My MIL gave my toddler son Aspirin when he hurt himself. I blew a gasket. She explained that it was Baby Aspirin. I explained Reyes Syndrome. "This Person Is Out Of Touch With Reality": 40 Delusional People Who Proved They Don’t Understand A Thing In This World I worked at a vet clinic, and a woman came in with her dog who had a horrible skin problem stemming from a flea infestation. Before I could even say anything, she claimed someone was after her, and had been stabbing her and her dog in their sleep with tree bark. It took me a few seconds to process that one. She also told me that she knew we hadn’t actually euthanized her old dog (that she had YEARS ago) but that we had sold her to Hollywood. Apparently she saw her in a commercial and that was her proof. The dog would have been like 20 by that point so no, we didn’t “sell her to Hollywood.” Honestly kind of sad, but the only person I have ever directly interacted with who was truly out of touch with reality.

This isn't being out of touch of reality. This is serious mental illness. It's not funny, it's not even sad, it's tragic when someone COMPLETELY loses touch with reality and not only a small segment of it. Please people take mental illness seriously.

It is quite literally being out of touch with reality though. Mental illness does that to people, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Heck being out of touch with reality is often one of the diagnostic criteria.

At one place I worked we had a very mentally ill lady decide that one of our Directors was conspiring with "Aliens" and had put an implant in her head to track her. (Or something equally crazy like that - can't remember all the details) We were a non-profit that had nothing to do with space at all, so I have no idea what made her think this. I believe she found him on our website or something, because we were not the type of company where customers were able to enter the building and speak with employees. There was an official protocol in the event she showed up and tried to get in. One of the weirdest things I've ever experienced! And no, I never saw her or anything - I just heard about it.

Certain people have more bills than other people. Some people care for multiple elderly family members, some people have a lot of kids, some people have 6 figures worth of student loans. Some people have all of those things. Just because you earn "a lot" doesn't mean you keep it all.

Yeah, some denominations of Christians and some other religions do. They define virginity as having an intact hymen, and a tampon may do this. It does seem to be a less common belief these days though. (I had to explain this to my best friend because her family were exclusive brethren and had this belief)

Let's assume this drivel was true for a moment...so what? It does my head in that, STILL, virginity is somehow tied to some imaginary worth of a woman, or some commentary on her character. Archaic, stupid bull s**t.

The question of whether using tampons can break the hymen is still addressed on the Tampax website. Answer: yes they can, but so can a lot of other things not relating to sexual activity. Depending upon the structure of a hymen, it may be possible for some women to engage in PIV sex without breaking the hymen. Which is why the presence of or lack thereof of a hymen is not a reliable indicator of whether a woman is a virgin.

I was taught that growing up. "Good girls don't use tampons." As it turns out tampons give me migraines, so I can't use them anyway, but the horror of tampons destroying your womanhood is insane.

You can actually buy a horse for around $100. So, yeah...not at all out of the scope of possibility. Yeah, some horses can run in the 10's of thousands, but she just said she was buying a "horse," not a champion Thoroughbred. What I want to know is why is everyone so focused on the horse, and not that her boss was "just a bit racist"?

    Randi Hewitson

But the other thing is horses are expensive when it comes to maintenance and caring for them. They need adequate space, shelter, food etc. If she's trying to buy a second horse, it means she's already paying all the expenses for one currently and adding another, doubling some of the expenses. It's not just about "buying a horse" , it's all the financial burden that comes with it that she can apparently afford and still manage a comfortable life

This lacks context. Is it because of the price? From all we know, the banana could pretty much cost 10 dollars. Are those American dollars? Canadian? Cambodian? Ecuadorian? Why do you need the banana for? Are you complaining that someone is berating you about the price of a banana? And you don't want to buy it? Or just disagree on the price? Too many questions, not enough answers.

I think a lot of straight people subconsciously equate "gay" with "sex." I've known plenty of people who are not homophobic, support gay rights and gay marriage, etc., but if they see two men or two women kiss it's like "don't they know kids might be watching this TV show/movie/public place?" They don't feel hatred, it's just subconscious. If their kid watches a man and woman kiss, they think "My kid is watching something sweet and wholesome." If their kid watches a same-sex couple kiss, they think "My kid is watching sex." In the past, I often felt this myself, but the logical part of my brain told me that didn't make any sense. Took a few weeks of soul-searching to figure out the irrationality going on in my subconscious.

My junior year of high school, in small town North Carolina, I took a psychology class for fun. My teacher, who otherwise seemed normal, heard a student playing Umbrella by Rhianna on their phone and said, "Turn that off, she's praising Allah and it's illuminati propoganda." I assume he meant the repeated 'ella's but I could never get him to explain the rest of it.

I’m probably missing something here but, when I was at college, I had several part time jobs to help make ends meet (as did many of my contemporaries not blessed with rich parents). How is that weird? 🤔

I think it's possibly because the cost of tuition has gone up so much that even with several part time jobs you still wouldn't be able to afford it without a student loan or scholarship. Some places have 3-4 year degrees costing six figures, plus accomodation and living costs. If you are bringing in over six figures, even in multiple part time jobs, you don't need the degree!

This is obviously out of touch for the present day, but this logic actually kinda works IF this were the 80s, when I went to college (and if you go to a state school). I was an independent student in college (no parental support), had a part-time job all the way through, and came out with only $6K in student loan debt.

I work with a girl. She's 21, bit of a stoner, living with her boyfriend who works at pizza hut. We also work in food service. She thinks she wants to marry him, but he HAS to spend at least $10k on a ring. And when she gets married, She wants one room in her house that is all pink, so she can get ready and put her make up on. Then she's going to sit around the house all day smoking the "dankest weed" in a pink fur lined house coat. Then when her man comes home they "can do their thing".

My own list of reasons starts with "why would I even *want* to?", followed by "a world where people help each other out is more comfortable than a world of backstabbers". Sure, backstabbers exist, but I try to avoid them wherever I can. With an immediate social circle of only decent, non-backstabbing people I can otherwise live a relaxed life. I wonder how stressed-out and anxious people with a different world view are. They must see enemies in every corner...

For most people though, that is in relation to a tragedy occuring and is something they will recover from. Chronic Depression is me, a 27 year old, who has been medicated for ten years to keep me pseudo functional and I still don't have a job or live on my own

A friend of mine is dating a woman far younger than him (he’s my age, almost 50, and she is about 20). I would be congratulating him on such an accomplishment (she is very attractive), were it not for the fact that she is so utterly stupid and completely out of touch with reality. Her most absurd statement is when she told me that “stem cell research” is all about using the cells from aborted fetuses as flavoring in canned food and that therefore, all canned foods contain small amounts of dead babies, so she will not eat anything that comes from a can.

I was dating a woman who was seven years younger than me. I know it’s not that bad but one day I realized when I was seventeen she was ten. Completely creeped me out. I was never able to convince her that I was not making it up when I broke off the relationship. I can't imagine what it would be like with a thirty year age gap. Edit: I was twenty eight at the time.

I am 52 years old and caucasian. My father was significantly older when I was born- 43 - think WWII era mentality as he was in the war. One of his favorite sayings was doesn't matter what color you are there's good and bad. There's white people that are good and there's white trash ... etc. Trash doesn't discriminate. He kinda taught me reverse discrimination in a way I guess, but I have never and still don't look at anyone different because of their skin color. I judge the person and nothing else. He's been gone for 27 years and that still sticks in my mind to this day. I'm not trying to say anything special here just putting my 2 cents in, because when I read these kind of things I always wonder why he had that mentality. It was way before his time.

"Good thing I'm not human." ...kay. Edit: Folks wanted elaboration. Dude in question was this obnoxious neckbeard who worked in the same warehouse as me, I'd done my best to avoid him, but as he tended to be loud, I knew he didn't just look like he fit the stereotype. One day, I was waiting in line to clock in (place was really particular about when you clocked in), and he was ahead of me. He starts bitching, to nobody in particular, that his upcoming holiday (it was around xmas) was going to be sh*tty and lonely. At this point, I'm feeling just a little bad for how much I've judged him, so I try to cheer him up a tad and engage in conversation: Me: "Eh, it doesn't HAVE to be that way. You can decide it's you time, relax, do sh*t YOU want to do. I know I enjoy having time off where I don't have to answer to anyone. Him: "Yeah, I guess. I'm just pissed. I was supposed to be going to this holiday party, it was gonna be great, but APPARENTLY [host's girlfriend] decided I wasn't welcome and now I've been banned." (My will to encourage starts to deflate, as I can assume MANY reasons why this came to be, but I don't know for certain, so I decide to try to be kind while finding my way out). Me: "Aw, that sucks. People can be frustrating." Him: "Some people just can't be happy unless they're excluding someone, and for some reason it's ALWAYS me." Me: "Yeah, I hear ya. To a degree, that's human nature, but it's no fun to be on the recieving end of that." Him: (Voice dripping with arrogance) "Good thing I'm not human." (At this point I've given up, my attempt to let go of my first impression proved thoroughly pointless. I nod, make a show of spotting a friend of mine, and scurry off to another line.)

My friend was going on about how the stock market is hitting records under Trump, and I just point out that we've been in a bull market since a few months after Obama got into office and we've been hitting records every week since 2013. I showed him a chart of the S&P 500 and he goes "I don't care about that chart".

Yes, the S&P did do quite well during the Obama administration. But, it did not hit records every week since 2013. Everyone should look at the chart for themselves, you can find it on the NASDAQ website under SPX Historical Data. I count 63 weeks in the 2014-2016 period when the S&P fell, that's more than a third of the weeks. So what chart did you show him?

Had a roommate a few years back. A mutual friend of ours helped us move in. The mutual asked us if we could let him keep a table and some chairs at our place until he moved into his new places as well and we agreed. After a few weeks I helped our mutual move his stuff from our place into his new place while my roommate was out. When he got home he asked where "his table and chairs went". When I reminded him that our mutual friend was going to take them back eventually he then proceeded to argue with me about how he had brought the table and chairs from home. Thankfully no longer living with that bundle of joy anymore.

I had a roommate once, moved in with nothing but the clothes on her back. When she left 6 months later she took all my towels and insisted they were hers - when I said no, she backed down and then ultimately stole them on her last day so I was left with one towel 😂 when I tried to talk to her she shrieked at me, I asked if she was drunk and she accused me of gaslighting her. I just shrugged and bought new (shitty) towels (she took two plush soft fancy towels I spent $25 each on - I’m usually broke so these were a favourite splurge of mine) lmao, not worth the effort.

This is ignorance, not stupidity. Ignorance is not knowing the answer to something - we are all ignorant about many things. Asking a question demonstrates intelligence; she recognizes she doesn't know the answer and wishes to learn. Stupidity, on the other hand, is steadfastly believing something despite being shown it is not true. Also, making fun of someone for asking a question.

I got to ride a small (15 passenger?) commercial flight to Milwaukee; my least favorite flight, plane rocked too much.

My God, what are they teaching people these days? The Civil Aeronautics Board kept prices HIGH through over-regulation. Prices began to drop when Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978, which provided for the eventual dismantling of the CAB, which thankfully happened at the very beginning of 1985.

I have an aunt who married a rather wealthy man. Like, she lives next door to the owner of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. My cousin went to Spain a few years back to look at yachts her husband was thinking of buying. She said while I was visiting "And pretty much everyone has at least a few million dollars in real estate." Words failed me.

People at this level think that poverty is 'deserved' as the people have been 'lazy' They have no idea how privileged they are..

i had a person at work once say that you'd get hypothermia and literally freeze in about ten minutes..... it was around 20 degrees Fahrenheit..... his reasoning, your body is mostly water. (p.s. he told a skinnier kid that it would only take him 8 minutes for the same to happen)

Perhaps is you were naked and soaked in water? I know that you can freeze in the North Sea within minutes..

You can get hypothermia and your heart can stop from the shock, but you don't freeze solid like an icicle. That would take a lot longer, maybe a day or two.

I once had a drunk guy explain to me that he knows "what part of water freezes! It's made up of hydrogen and oxygen, y'know, and it's gotta be the hydrogen, 'cos if it was the oxygen it would drop out in frozen bits from the air in winter!" Sound resoning. I was impressed. Didn't even know where to start 😂

I worked at McDonald’s (Sydney, Australia) for the good part of my teen years. One shift I was on register taking orders and this lady came up to me, she must’ve been in her mid to late 40’s. She said, “wow McDonalds, you guys still exist? Haven’t seen you around in years!” That is word for fkn word. I was like .. wot ¿

"New fridges cost close to $10,000" - says my MIL who has a fridge that hasn't been working for almost a month. They are using one of the drawers to keep everything in as apparently that part works. But all the shelves are empty. Update: NOT talking about a built-in fridge. They spent about $5k on their current one, purchased 5 or 6 years ago. Refuse to get a repair man in.

This must be an exchange rate or cost of living difference! $5k on a refrigerator? Is it an industrial one? I'm assuming it's USD, and this works out at around £3925. The most expensive free standing fridge I can find online (pre any residual Easter sale discount) is £2329 for a fridge freezer, and I had to be highly specific with my search criteria. Average fridge freezer prices in the UK are maybe up to £700. And as part of my research, one website lists US fridge costs at being up to $4100 for a *smart* fridge, possibly smarter than this person's MIL...

I'm in the US, and it's been awhile since I last bought appliances so I checked the website of my local chain home improvement store. Right now they have standard household fridge/freezer combos with prices ranging from $600 to $5000. The scientific laboratory I work in recently bought an ultra low temp (-80C) industrial freezer for about $10,000. You would have to work really hard to find a household fridge for $10,000

Most full size fridges are priced between $1500 and $2500 CAD where I live. A $10,000 dollar fridge would probably be something built-in and huge.

“What’s more important, a friendship or a job?” Considering I’ve had that same job for nearly 20 years and plan on retiring from it, combined with the fact that I’ve only known the friend for five years and caught him in more lies than I can count... well, I gotta go give that one some serious thought.

I very much expected a different story behind that question. For a real friend, I would drop anything and help them. That’s about 2 or 3 people. People who consistently lie to me are not friends though. Acquaintances maybe.

Really late to the thread, but I had a client call houses in the ballpark of what mine cost "scary ghetto houses." I live in Texas, so you can surprisingly get a non-scary house for around 200k. I'm not ashamed.

Well, maybe that client didn't live in Texas. Median housing price in Santa Clara county, CA, where I live: over $1.5 million. In my area, yeah, in fact, $200 grand would be scary ghetto stuff. Or a dog house. One of the two.

Housing where I am is INCREDIBLY cheap and, for the most part, has gorgeous views. Still handy for the closest city too. I can understand if you were born somewhere that is expensive but I don't understand the desirer to move there. I can have a better standard of living than someone with twice the earnings..

Global climate change. Weather is unpredictable, storms more frequent, sea level rising, etc. One record cold day doesn't change the rest.
