I do think kids clothes look a lot better today

When the girl on the left is an adult, she will look back at that photo and complain about the awful clothing her parents put her in. Styles change and we look back at the styles of the past with disgust. It's how it works.

Nah I really think it depends on the parent, and also where they are from maybe. My mum and her mum would always dress me in fuzzy pants and a regular shirt (usually mismatched) and my grandma on my dad's side always tried to get me to wear fancy clothes
