Humans are interesting creatures. Looking from the outside, it might seem that we accept many weird things as absolutely normal. In fact, we don’t even have to look from the outside, just look at our past and see what kind of today’s oddities we consider to be normal.

In this list, you’ll find plenty of today’s normal things that people think will lose their normality in 10+ years.

Wrong. I wish this would be true but it is wrong because (many) people are stupid sheep. No, probably not you, reader, but enough that "influencers" have been a thing my entire life. All that changes is the form they take. The internet and sites like youtube make it easier for "nobodies" on a limited budget to become an influencer but the concept has been around my entire life. Celebrity endorsements, mesmerizing patter on shopping networks and late night infomercials. Sports endorsements subtly convincing you to purchase (Nike / whoever) gear because (insert famous athlete) is prominently wearing their gear. Over time the faces change and the type of media used to reach you changes but the basic concept does not. If there is a buck to be made pushing products in your face someone will be doing it.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time Hopefully family vlog-style social media content. I think we’ll have a wave of kids who grew up being featured on popular family YouTube channels (or TikTok, or any other platform) reach adulthood and speak out about how unhealthy it was. We already have some who were filmed on family reality shows that aired on TV channels like TLC, but the proliferation of these on social media is so much more widespread.

I can’t even fathom sharing my kids name online let alone his whole life! I’m an old millennial and Facebook blew up when I was in college, but I had a very unhealthy relationship that resulted in stalking issues so I was terrified of social media. I didn’t want to give him more information to stalk me worse. So I avoided it initially and I’ve never gotten into it even after I moved across the country and was much safer. I know as my son gets older I’ll have to learn social media to be able to monitor him appropriately but he’s only 7 now and I don’t connect any of his games to the internet. He does watch YouTube but I watch it with him the majority of the time. I know a lot about Minecraft and Among Us. Lol.

Absolutely! A lot of these kids from when it all started r already beginning to do that. ESPECIALLY a lot of the poster kids for the trans movement that had parents that allowed them to take hormones and have surgery at very young ages. Those kids now recognize that it WAS a phase and now they r f*cked for life. Let ur kids b who they r, but until they r adults, don't mess with their bodies. They can make that choice for themselves when they r older.

Canada is moving to provide universal basic income for people who receive disability support payments. The current model prevents recipients who can work casually or part time from being able to do so (if they earn more than a small income they are disqualified from disability support). This is an amazing step forward to help people have their dignity and contribute to their well-being in whatever capacity they are able to

I take some comfort in the fact we have at least come to realize it is a problem. I grew up as plastics were being 'discovered'. They existed, but many new / better kinds have been developed in my life time. Even stuff you don't think much bout like plastic cling wrap (think Saran wrap) has improved. BUT - in the early days we didn't see the waste as a problem. One of my chores as an 11 year old was to burn the household garbage. Everything that could burn went into our burn barrel. I happily watched plastic drip flaming blobs as it burned because it was interesting. Now I feel pretty cringe about that but at the time I had no clue that what I was doing was 'bad'. I am happy to see efforts to reduce use / increase recycling but we have a long way to go. Modern me practices all three Rs but the reduce part isn't always easy since products come packaged how they come packaged. I compost all my food waste and recycle everything I can. It is surprising how much this reduces dump runs.

I don't mind subscriptions for some things. Streaming services are fine except the paying, but still watching ads. I'm paying to not have ads. Peacock's levels are insane. Amazon is apparently going to offer a no-ad add on subscription on top of yearly Amazon Prime cost. Ridiculous. I think it isn't so much the subscriptions themselves that are the problem for me - it's the add ons. I think Amazon can charge more for yearly and include prime video & Kindle unlimited without adding it as another subscription.

Yes. SOME subscriptions = good. Forced subscriptions on everything including stuff that does not need a subscription is ridiculous. I was happy to see (BMW I think it was) backed off a bit on subscriptions to use the heat seaters in their cars. They got a lot of backlash from people pointing out how greedy and stupid that was. I despise the thought of subscriptions for software I only use once in a while. (Photoshop and MS office are two examples) For some stuff it fits though. I am okay with my subscriptions to Netflix and Spotify. I used to purchase all my music/movies on CD/DVD and I payed a lot more for way less product and especially for the movies, I rarely used them again. I still have physical media of some things I really like but I have thinned it WAY down compared to years ago. TLDR: I don't like being FORCED to subscribe to things I want to consume but I like having the option.

These days most paper comes from farmed trees for the purpose. Usually fast growing pulp trees. The amount of forested acres in the USA has remained stable for many years because paper / lumber companies treat it as a crop - which it is.

I'm infuriated that the DNC has not put forth better candidates to run against Trump. Biden's approval ratings are in the s**t can. Wake up Democrats! I would argue the age is secondary. It takes a lot of money and other forms of power (influence) to get higher up the food chain in politics. Most people do not have this in their 20s and 30s. A natural outcome of this is the people who have accumulated the most money and power tend to have lived longer. I don't pretend to have an easy fix for this. I'm just pointing out that age is the symptom not the disease.

Call me old fashioned but that's not something that needs to be regulated - it's part of a parent's job, not the government's. Personal responsibility.

A parent can regulate their childs access. An individual can regulate themselves, i.e., regulate food intake. Regulation doesn't only mean government control.

I didn't have a phone until I was 15 and at the time I hated it so much cos everyone else seemed to have one. Now I'm thankful my parents didn't get me one at a young age. I had an iPod and secretly got social media as a kid and it was very very bad for me. Lucky my parents found out and I had to delete it. Kids should not have phones and should not be on social media

I don't mind kids having phones since they come in handy for rides and emergencies. The answer is giving them *basic* flip-phones that can only make calls/texts. There's also something called Gabb phones that are supposedly safer than a smart phone that kids can access harmful sites.

Yeah, NO THANK YOU. This is a parental thing, not a governmental thing. Possibly OP is talking about regulations on the companies at the other end. The ones harvesting data / marketing to minors. I do agree there is a need for more of that and it is easy to say there will be since these changes are already happening. But the actual control of the minor using a phone (or not) should be up to the family, same as it is for most things.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time The way we treat addiction. The disease model will go out of style (thank god) and we will treat it as a behavioral disorder (because that’s what it is). And we will be able to mitigate this behavior BEFORE it gets so out of hand and treatment centers will stop outsourcing their actual f*****g treatment to twelve step programs!! The future is bright in this area.

12 step programs feel like a cult to me. It does NOT help to list every f*****g wrong you ever made, go flipping rocks with 10 year old dumpster fires underneath by apologizing for them and sharing all of it with someone else. Not one bit of it does anything but bring all your trauma to the forefront and reignite it instead of moving on into the future

I disagree with you on this. A twelve step program saved my life (and many others). Part of breaking addiction is to take a deep look at our character defects, and to consciously work on them. Part of it is to also address the guilt and shame we live with by trying to make amends when possible, and only if it will not harm another person. We share our wrongs with our sponsor so that we can understand that, no matter what we have done, we are not alone. It gives us an opportunity to face our trauma and work through it.

There is NO WAY to "mitigate this behavior" within our current WORLDWIDE society of double standards, fear, deception, ignorance, lies, control, focus on punishment, divisiveness, us-and-them mentality, stigmas on behavioral disorders, vast chasms in social divisions, social divisions of any kind, remaining vestigial racial biases, autocracy, theocracy, lack of recognizing human dignity, lack of compassion, denial, delusion, self-deception, lack of acknowledgment of emotional distresses, greed, self-centeredness, lack of listening, etc., etc., etc., and people being shìtty to each other. Addictions WILL NOT be tamed until ALL FOLKS are able to be heard, attempt to listen, and prioritize having dialogue and working together. Until these things ARE THE PRIORITY, treating addiction on a societal level will continue to be elusive. Anything else is a fantasy.

I agree times a million. I'm tired of addiction being looked at as a moral failing. Tired of addiction sufferers made to feel shame. I'm not sure there is much difference between disease and disorder except that disorder can carry a stigma of it being under one's control (it is not).

An AI program took my order at a fast food restaurant recently, it was obviously new as the employees were double checking it with me, I asked about it and the employee said they are testing it and employees aren't sure about it, but it nailed my order. It's just another tool and hopefully it will help out with our mundane tasks and improve efficiency and accuracy in many jobs

It's doable now, just unplug, even if for a day, better yet a month. Even if still plugged in for work, shut it down in off hours, but this doesn't stop anyone from unplugging in personal life for a time period. For those who say they "can't", well then you can't.

I disagree, it's a choice. People choose to be accessible. I make it well known that I'm not married to my phone and may or may not respond to a text within 3 or 4 days, if at all.

To those saying we have a choice - it's kinda true, but you're expected to be always contactable. When I was in my late 30s I forgot to take my phone off airplane mode for two days after waking up one morning... Apparently my mom had texted me during this period, and I didn't respond for two days so she called the local Sheriff's department from the other side of the country to do a wellness check on me! And I have no medical history, no mental/physical disabilities, depression, addiction, etc (in which case it may be understandable) - and three deputies showed up at my front door while I was happily watching a movie that night!

Again, this is a parental thing. I realize this is a 'stodgy' old concept but if you can grok it, when I was young my parents did not allow me to just consume any media I wanted to consume. They were not super strict but my point is it was my parents deciding when I was old enough to watch (a war movie, whatever example), not the government. Though I do agree with the government / regulations giving parents better options to deal with modern technology since it is so much more portable than the living room TV set of the 60s. So for example, a parental setting in phones / software to designate it as a kid's phone. Maybe even some graduated age groups. And yes, I realize some of this exists now, but from what I ready a lot of it doesn't do a great job.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time Paying for all our electricity from a power company. The future is and always has been on-site generation for EVERYTHING. Most cities are putting "solar-readiness" clauses in their building codes so new homes are being built ready to fit it on already and get great efficiency. And I live in Houston, the oil/energy capital of the country. Happened 7 years ago. Solar has always been the future. Just a matter of people learning about it without a pitch. Edit: to clarify, for the places that undeniably get more than enough sun to provide solar for homes it's the future. It just makes sense. Places that don't have sun are an example of what oil/gas electricity is good for. On-demand/emergency electricity generation when better means won't work. Oil and gas isn't the best solution but it is pretty damn good in places where it's cold and cloudy

A few years ago, B&Q were selling a roof-top wind machine that could save £200 p.a. on your bills. The price was £1500 and it was guaranteed for 7 years...basically costing an extra £100. If it had been £500, it might have been worth it. I agree that new south-facing roofs should be built with solar panels as standard.

Wishful thinking. Technology is still a long way off being able to make households self-sufficient. Even where you have guaranteed sun all the time you'll probably be using more power just to keep your home cool than you could possibly get from the solar panels.

I live in Southern California. My sister had panels and a battery installed on our childhood home. She “sells” excess electricity back to the city, and they run the AC most of the day, along with the pool filter, her Tesla charger, etc. We have neighbors who also have solar panels and run their AC all day and still generate more power than they can use in a day from their panels. To wit: your generalization is incorrect.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time Having screens everywhere. I know I know. Seems like we are going the opposite way. But I could see a world where we have so much tech integrated into phones and so much screen time that it becomes unclassy to have TVs in every room of the house or a computer sitting out. Centering your entire living room around a TV will be considered kinda trashy. Screens will be looked at as something to simplify or reduce.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time I’m probably being too hopeful here but I hope it’s shopping on Amazon. They’re horrible now and with all the better options (even eBay is better), they don’t deserve their success anymore. They mostly sell fake Chinese c**p now, have unreliable delivery times, bad packaging, worse customer service than before, etc. Don’t even get me started on getting returned, open items as ‘new’ and having to wait 2 weeks for the refund.

Amazon is an unfortunate necessity for me. I hate them, but there aren't many other options. And they are only growing. My wish is for there to be several choices like Amazon. Or for amazon to grow some compassion & empathy. Start treating employees better. Pay them better. Lower prices where they can. Stop making everything an add on to the "amazon prime membership". I'm sure I could list more faults they need to fix, too.

They have the fastest delivery where I Iive, turn up when they say they turn up, and unlike all other couriers they actually ring the bell. I noticed the prices are higher for same items than say ebay or retailers. Pretty much always. But when it’s something urgent, like last time when thermostat broke, I ordered on Amazon 10pm and it turned up 10am next day even tho it was Sunday, I will not hesitate to pay the extra price.

I know. I find this true when I look for toiletry items in Target, Walmart or drug stores. For example, a dermatologist recommends this one item, usually a basic Cerave or Neutrogena, but no store carries it. Not even a spot on the shelves where it could be sold out. I’m not chasing all over town to find it. That’s why I buy all my toiletries and cosmetics on Amazon. I’ve never had trouble, but I’m a Prime member if that makes a difference.

OP must be using the "other" Amazon. The Amazon I use has given me good service / prices for years. I often try to shop local first but end up going to Amazon for lower price / better selection. Last week was the first time in over 20+ years that an order got cancelled due to it was damaged in shipping and they sent it back before it got to me. I reordered and had it about three days later via free shipping. I did once get a pair of gloves that ran small / were too small for my hands so I gave them to a friend because I didn't want to return them. Really my only complaint might be over packaging many items.

Unfortunately, online shopping will probably increase because the brick and mortars (like Target and Walmart) are getting bombarded with shoplifters who really just fill up carts and walk right the f**k out of the store. Stores are either closing or locking stuff up making it impossible to actually shop. My local Walmart locks up the cosmetics now. Try asking a salesperson to unlock serval different shades of eyeshadow for ONE customer. That is not going to last.

36 People Online Predict What Will Seem "Not Normal" In A Decade's Time Life without pandemics: the 21st century will have more, some likely worse than COVID. There's a number of reasons for this. Zoonotic spillover, e.g. from pathogens originating in Amazonian bats. More broadly because travel, urbanization, climate change, increased contact with animals, and healthcare worker shortages are a powderkeg for crises like this. This and other societal pressures — e.g. the need for compression of morbidity as rising numbers of retirees become an untenable burden on younger workers — will lead to a jobs shift toward medical science and care, just as some jobs are being replaced by AI and various forms of automation. In coming decades we may not cure, but will do a much better job treating, many types of cancer as well as Alzheimers, diabetes, etc. Cases where these are debilitating or fatal will be unusual.

Hopefully the generations will understand they can learn from each other. Older generations need to understand they are the ones who raised the younger ones - and younger generations will appreciate the knowledge of the older ones. The olders need to appreciate change - and encourage it because every generation has faults. The youngers need to understand the olders did what they could in their circumstances at the time. I'm gen x (1970) and I am so proud of the things gen z is trying to change. I can also appreciate the boomers did what they thought was right for the most part. And us gen Xers seem to always be stuck in the middle.

What a lot of younger folks reading this do not realize is that they will be hated on by younger generations. The issue is not 'boomers' or the "silent generation" or the "millennials" or whatever. The issue is every younger generation likes to blame the problems of the world on the older generations. Most of the time some of it is deserved and some of it not. But move the clock forward and some day "Generation Alpha" will be talking s**t about all the Millennials and Millennials will be like, "What? Wait, we don't deserve all of that". Welcome to how human nature works.

I remember when Boomers were being blamed for everything by the generation above them! Their permissiveness, anything goes attitude, lack of respect for authority, etc was causing a degeneration in society, apparently.I was only a child at the time (Gen Xer) but I find it entertaining that it is now a younger generation but they're still to blame.

All these comments talking about all the hate boomers get from the younger generations... do you know WHY we're so hostile to boomers? For millennials especially, we grew up being buried under mountains of boomers $hitting on us: "millennials are so lazy/entitled/etc", "millennials ruined everything", and on and on and on. It was RELENTLESS. And what was the most infuriating by far is that we were being blamed for things that we had little or no control over. My favorite example has to be the number of boomers snidely remarking about 'millennials expect participation trophies'... as if we, as children, went to trophy shops ourselves, commissioned those trophies, paid for them, and then awarded them to ourselves? Or how 'millennials have no adult skills', when we as kids had no say in the matter whether or not schools gave classes like home economics, wood shop or car repair the axe; were we, as kids, supposed to somehow teach ourselves how to cook, clean, build a bookcase or repair a car?

It still makes me furious that people have the audacity to be surprised that millennials, after literal years of blaming and infantilizing and scolding by our parents (who were often boomers), the media and society writ large, that we'd be pissed off about how we were treated.

I visited Europe this summer as an American and travelled effortlessly through six countries. The only even slight delays were England to EU and back. The rest didn’t even look at my passport, it was like traveling states in America. Between increasing global migration, political splintering and tension, potential US drawback in world order-keeping role, likely increased terror incidents to come, economic turmoil, and yet unseen effects of climate change, I think we will see borders become harder to cross than today.

For an American traveling to friendly / ally countries this has been true for a long time. Most places do look at your passport but it is pretty quick / a formality. Fun fact - it has gotten harder to go between USA/Canada. Not difficult but you need a passport. When I was young I could drive up for day as a teenager and all I had was a driver's license which they didn't always ask for. If you had passengers they would usually ask if they were US citizens and that was it. These days it is very much "papers please". When they were making the transition I had a border patrol agent pull me into their office and lecture me about how a driver's license was not proof of citizenship. Queue my inner old man rage (which I kept bottled up) that wanted to say, "I know that you little s**t but you guys were accepting DL at this border crossing for years while you were still being potty trained!". Instead I said, "Yes sir, I understand."

Actually I expect this to improve. Possibly not ownership but things are kind of getting to a tipping point both for ownership and renting. (in the USA) At some point the government will have to change things because human beings need to be able to be housed and need to have enough funds to still function with the rest of their lives. Absolutely not, if OP means public communal bathrooms. Those who identify as female should NOT be forced into sharing bathroom spaces with those who identify as male. Children of either (or neither/no) gender should not be forced to share bathroom space with adults not of their gender (unless the child cannot use the restroom by themselves.) Non-binary and gender-neutral people should have a place where they feel comfortable. Private unisex/non-gendered bathrooms are a solution; unisex COMMUNAL bathrooms are not.

I think that they can be communal. Shared handwashing and each stall completely enclosed. No open urinals. No cracks in stalls (which should be done away with everywhere). Or even doing stalls that have a toilet and sink (completely enclosed). Like mini bathrooms. Like Porta potties, but inside and CLEAN. I think this will allow everyone to feel comfortable (which I truly appreciate is your main concern ❤️❤️❤️).

I am very much for unisex bathrooms simply because if done right they are very practical. But not in the form most US bathrooms are now. One I used in Japan (possibly it was Korea) many years ago was done well IMO. Each toilet had floor to ceiling walls so more like a mini 'room'. Nobody was going to peek over/under. Common area for washing hands saved a lot of space since it did not have to built 2X. The far wall did have a trough style urinal but all people could see was the back of you. No stress over "which bathroom". More people coming and going so a predator would have a harder time catching someone alone. If desired, they could have cameras in the common area since all you are doing is washing hands and there would be no way for the cameras to accidentally see into stalls. As a man I mostly have it easy but I have seen so many restroom setups where I can just walk in and pee but the women are lined up out the door looking sad and frustrated.

You are entitled to your opinion but if you decide to share it be prepared for any consequences.

Patriotism isn’t the last refuge of a scoundrel, “I have a right to my opinion” is. Of course you can have an opinion but expecting it to be given the same weight as people that actually know things isn’t reasonable.

They could also mean that, though having an opinion, you cannot express it without being shamed and/or verbally killed by people that think otherwise. It's already happening too

Political correctness comes down hard on anyone who has a different opinion. And it is only getting worse. I can't post a physics opinion on the physics Facebook anymore, for example. Too many gatekeepers who insist that you must agree with them or not get published.

People who use phrases like "political correctness", "woke", "snowflake" self- identify themselves as the problem.
