Here Are 35 Of The Most Interesting Mcdonald’s Restaurants Shared By “Nonstandard Mcdonald’s” Twitter Account
There's no one in the world who doesn't know what fast food is—some love it, others detest it, but the famous brands are almost seared into our brain. Certain fast food chains operate at a local level only, and then there are those that are spread all over the world. McDonald's is perhaps one of the few brands that even people who have never tasted fast food will recognize.
With such popularity comes variety. The chain's restaurants can be found in the middle of bustling cities and in remote places, with fascinating designs and astounding architectural decisions. And one Twitter user decided to collect the pictures of these unique restaurants in one place. This user going by the name of Nonstandard McDonald's (@nonstandardmcd) dedicated time to preserving the only architectural heritage of the western world—McDonald's restaurants! Since its conception, the account has gained 101.6K followers as fans of the fast food chain happily shared their insights, opinions, and pictures. And here are some of them.

The Smallest McDonald's - "Mchive" (2019)
Originally constructed in Sweden; current location unknown.
"Active (for bees only; inaccessible to humans)"
This McDonald's is certainly the bee's knees and something to buzz about.
Unfortunately, it is inaccessible to humans. In honour of World Bee Day (who knew there was such thing), the McDonald's franchise commissioned Swedish designer Nicklas Nilsson to create the world's smallest McDonald's. The interior of this tiny McDonald's contains rows of honeycombs instead of seats.

"Various zoo animals adorn the front, marquee, roof, and interior of this location, as well as wall murals and a jungle-themed playplace."
🎵It's a jungle out there. Disorder and confusion everywhere... No one seems to care, well I do- Hey! whos in charge here?🎵
Yay! Go dallas! It's themed like this because it's right across the street from the Dallas zoo.
Airplane McDonald's (1990) Taupo, New Zealand
"Awarded the "world's coolest McDonald's title" in 2013, after which it was repainted to match the current black and yellow styling of McDonald's restaurants. Prior to this, its paint job was red with black accents (though not the pantone 485 c red used in McDonald's branding)."
We used to have a DC10 at my local Maccas when I was growing up. You could have your birthday in it. I cried when they took it away.
Dinosaur McDonald's (Mid 1990s) Tucson, Az
"In 2020, a group known as Christians against dinosaurs petitioned for the removal of this location's dinosaur statues. The franchise owner stood firm in response; no plans are in place to remove the dinosaurs."
I'll start a group under the name "Dinosaurs Against Christians". Who's with me?
Load More Replies...Same :/ edit: I found out there are different types of christianity
Load More Replies...I should start a group called Smart Christians against Idiot Bigot Christians.
Time for Dinosaurs Against Christians. *angry swarm of chickens and sparrows*
Hello. Am Christian. I *PROMISE* that MOST of us are NOT this stupid!
I found an article suggesting the group might be a satire thing, but it's impossible to tell... These lunatics might be serious. The article also mentioned someone who joined the Facebook group thinking it was a joke, but then spent time there and came to believe they're serious. I also found this image in the article (a banner pic of their Facebook page at some point.) IS THAT JUDAS HOLDING A TOY STEGASAURUS?!?! I have not been able to breathe for the past few minutes and I can't stop grinning!!! Screenshot...87-png.jpg
Sorry that people make you feel like you have to defend your faith. Not really fair huh? On the bright side, DINOSAURS!
Load More Replies...A. I just want to say I live near Tucson and see these dinosaurs all the time! It's amazing! Even, since the pandemic, they've put a mask on the one facing the street (I don't know about the other one though). B. I am a Christian and when shown the Christians against dinosaurs trying to remove the statues i initially thought it was a joke because it was ridiculous, but did some research and NO it was real and I was infuriated pretty much everyone in the Tucson area! Pleases know we are not all idiots! :)
Now... now... people. Those aren't real christians since the don't really read the whole bible. Those guys only pick out the choicest bits and regurgitate them to fit their view points. Which in the end only creates chaos and misconceptions. Besides that little group is forgetting the most important stuff....and it doesn't involve dinos, cartoons and other.
As a Christian - the Bible doesn’t contradict the existence of dinosaurs at all. Some say it even supports it - IDK the verse though.
Crocodile McDonald's (Date Unknown) Lisbon Zoo, Lisbon, Portugal
"This location within the Lisbon zoo is directly adjacent to its crocodile enclosure, with glass that lets guests get an up-close view of its residents."
That croc, chillin with the dangling leg, tho. Just like me after two burgers.
It is missing one of the most beautiful McDonald's in the world, the McDonald's Imperial Aliados in the city of Porto, with crystal chandeliers, windows with stained glass and delicious pastry". Imperial-A...a31b51.jpg
Mcski (Date Unknown, Possibly Early 90's) Pitea, Sweden
McSki in Sweden are open and running in Lindvallen (not Piteå). In Piteå it's common to use a snowmobile in the regular drive through.
I wonder why the first picture, the McDonald's looks like it's not even open?
oh yeah! this is sweet ... if now the quality of burgers would be improved ... would be so good!
Martinstor Tower McDonald's (Date Unknown) Freiburg, Germany
I see the Germans were strongly against putting bright yellow plastic arches on historical buildings
Das ist gut, ja? Wish planning committees in England cared more about preserving the beauty of older buildings. Google Ugly Buildings in Maidstone, like the toilet roll holder hotel, which is next to one of the most beautiful buildings in Kent.
Load More Replies...In Washington, we have a similar looking McDonalds in Leavenworth, although it isn't a historical building-it was built to look old and Bavarian lol. All the other stores in town look that way including the Safeway - it's literally a law there that all buildings have to be built in a style like the picture above.
Not allowed to use the "golden arches". There is also a place in America that they are not allowed. Can't remember off hand where. But the McDs is also in a Historic Area.
There are two Freiburgs in Germany, one in the former East Germany (DDR). I went to school in Freiburg im Breisgau, in the former West Germany (GDR). McDonalds wasn't there then, wish it had been!
Bray Town Hall McDonald's (1997) Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland
Giant Fries And Oda McDonald's (Date Unknown) Las Vegas, Nv
Maybe they should actually fill the soda thing up with water or something.
Load More Replies...According to the website Weird Nevada (http://www.weirdnv.com/location.php?location=996), it is located at 2340 South Rainbow Boulevard. And a quick check of Google maps shows it as well.
Zoe Hoesley I think it's awesome, that you love oda's. Btw, Who is oda's? Lol
A&s Plaza McDonald's (Early 90's) Manhattan Mall (Formerly A&s Plaza), NYC
yes i want to go to cyber mcdonalds in the tall buildings vaguely japanese megacity
I absolutely, LOVE LOVE LOVE this, McDonald's!! The inside of this Mickey D's! This deCOR IS, what I would call Sleek and Sexy!!!
I grew up in NYC, hung out at the Manhattan Mall (RIP it never found its footing - it became a Daffy's, who knows what it is now). What a flash from the past!
Au Roi De La Bière (King Of Beer) McDonald's (1998) Saint-Lazare, Paris, France
"Originally a brasserie opened in 1892, the namesake king of beer and members of his court can still be found all around the facade of this location. Unfortunately for him, this McDonald's location does not serve beer. McCafé coffee, however, is available."
While you’re in Paris to visit St Lazare Mc Donald, you should also take the opportunity to see Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum. It’s worth a visit too ;)
Load More Replies...It looks pretty discrete for a McDonald's. Still quite a nice building.
Load More Replies...Black Arches McDonald's (Date Unknown) Monterey, Ca
"The interior of this location features unusual decor, including faux brick arch portals, chandeliers, a false cathedral ceiling, and murals of what may be California wine country."
Dude. You're telling about how cool the interior is, but no pictures?!
Southwest Turquoise McDonald's (1993) Sedona, Az
I believe this was made so that it doesn't stand out in this town... it blends with the architecture of the town
Yes, I have actually been to this one and everything has to meet the architectural and color standards of the area.
Load More Replies...Lol this is the only McDonald’s that I’ve ACTUALLY been to on this list. Thought it was a counterfeit McDonald’s when I passed by it 😂
I've been here! They have a town ordinance. Signage must match the Sedona Turquoise and be under a certain height.
Weird...yellow signifiies the arches are fries, and I like to think the red background on the logo is ketchup..now it is blue (pretty and I know why it is blue there) so now I think the fries are moldy
Art Deco McDonald's (Date Unknown) Clifton Hill, Melbourne, Australia
"Originally built as the united kingdom hotel in 1937. Listed as a heritage landmark in 1988."
The Australians are NOT strongly against putting bright yellow plastic arches on historical buildings :(
As someone who works in historic preservation, you are looking at this all wrong. The building was saved in large part to it's new use. Preserving and maintaining historic building is very expensive and without a moneymaking use, no company is going to be willing to do it. If this was any other kind of business that wasn't fast food, I suspect you wouldn't have the same issue with the new signage... yeah they are golden arches but those golden arches saved that building.
And aren't doing any damage. Remove the arches, you'd never know they had been there
Load More Replies...Gorgeous. But the big sign on top needs to go. It destroys the silhouett of the building
Astronaut McDonald's (Date Unknown) Houston, Tx - Near Nasa Space Center Houston
Giant Happy Meal McDonald's (Early 1990's) Dallas, Tx
"This location featured massive sculptures of McDonald's menu items, as well as graphics/statues of the McDonald and gang. Through a front door beneath an enormous big mac, guests would enter a faux-wood paneled dining area. This location was standardized in a 2016 refurbishment."
mcronald and gang disappeared when i was 8
I bet they lost a lot of customers who went there because of the decor.
City Hall (Gradska Kuća) McDonald's (Date Unknown) Subotica, Serbia
"This location is tucked into the first floor of Subotica's historic city hall, completed in 1912 and famous for its bold and colorful Hungarian art nouveau motif. Much of that grand and ornate design remains inside, including chandeliers, stained glass and wood paneling."
Aw one of my best friends lives in subotica I’ve always wanted to visit. That’s a cool looking McDs though.
You should visit! Subotica is really nice! (I'm Serbian, and a little biased, so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt)
Load More Replies...Why does McDonalds put their restaurants in places that could easily become a museum?
I'm guessing that the city doesn't want to make it a museum
Load More Replies...Mcboat (Date Unknown) Hamburg, Germany
"This location is an otherwise standard McDonald's offering a typical auto drive-thru. in addition, though, this location offers the "McBoat", a pickup location for boaters traveling down the adjacent canal."
We've one in our town across the street from the river with a dock.
World Of Warcraft McDonald's (2014) Various Locations Around China
"This themed overlay of otherwise standard locations was part of a promotion between McDonald's and Activision-Blizzard in 2014, where customers would receive a rewards card that could eventually be redeemed for in-game World of Warcraft items."
It would awesome if cosplay(with peace-tied weapons) was encouraged and gave you a discount.

Radio Station McDonald's "Wmac" (Date Unknown) Opryland Area, Nashville, Tn
"While not a functional radio station, this McDonald's does embrace the Opryland spirit by featuring its very own venue stage and live performances. Various memorabilia, such as historical instruments and radios, are on display inside. While the location did receive a paint job sometime in the late 2010's to bring it up to current McDonald's colors, its theming remains entirely intact."
Clock Tower McDonald's (Date Unknown) St. Petersburg, Russia
Undersea McDonald's (Date Unknown) Navarre, Fl

Vegas Strip McDonald's (Date Unknown) Harrah's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nv
Mountain Frontier McDonald's (Date Unknown) Lone Pine, Ca
"Nestled in the Inyo mountains east of the Sierra Nevada, Lone Pine is a small town that proudly bears a frontiersman theme in its architecture. This McDonald's, with its decor, murals, and set of saloon doors below its sign, is no exception."
Gennevilliers Station McDonald's (Date Unknown) Gennevilliers, Near Paris, France
@WilvanderHeijden In France, since decentralization in the 1990s, the State no longer takes care of the maintenance of buildings which are not classified as historical monuments. This maintenance is now devolved to the mayors of the cities where the buildings are located. And this maintenance is expensive. This is why the mayors prefer to rent the buildings to companies (here Macdonald's) which will be responsible for maintaining the building at their expense.
Because unlike in North America, many other countries do their best to preserve their historic buildings; so when a company like McDonald's wants to open a location, they need to work with the confines of the original building. Personally I'd much rather have a McDonalds that looked like this than one of the many ugly flat-front concrete ones around me.

Times Square McDonald's (2003) Times Square, New York, NY
"This location closed, in part, due to the opening of a new times square flagship McDonald's at 45th and Broadway in 2019. Ironically, this new location was constructed at the former site of toys 'r' us times square, another recently deceased example of nonstandard American retail. It appears that this new McDonald's shares the same complex as the former Toys'r'Us, but does not occupy any of the same footprint. thanks to all followers who helped clarify!"
I remember the ferris wheel in that Toys'R'Us! Be pretty cool if it transported food from kitchen down to dining level!
We have a couple of restaurants called Fritz's here in the Kansas City area that deliver your food on an elevated train track that goes around the restaurant, it then lowers it to your table. My son loved it when he was little!
Load More Replies...I've been to this McDonald's. It's several stories high and the view from the wall of glass is fantastic. Super spacious, feels like a hipster restaurant.
Old West McDonald's (Early 1990's) Davie, Fl
Yeah, this one has been gone for a while. In the back there was an area to tie your horse.
Coolsingel McDonald's (2015) Rotterdam, The Netherlands
"Once voted the ugliest building in Rotterdam prior to remodel, this longstanding McDonald's was revamped in 2015 to feature a spiral staircase and more elegant, modern design with lots of natural light."
Langtree Mall McDonald's (1990's) Langtree Mall, Mildura, Victoria, Australia
"This location was closed as part of a redevelopment of the Langtree mall, which better connected it with the nearby Murray river. However, not all locals were pleased with the decision."
Spent many Sunday mornings here hungover with my best friend getting s**t off the manager.. he was awesome, great for a laugh & great service! Good times!
I remember my class stopping here for lunch on the way back from a high school camp! We were so excited to be able to have McDonald's after a week of boring camp food.

Barber Shop McDonald's (2020) Stockholm, Sweden
"Here, guests can book a virtual appointment with a hairdresser for a one-on-one "COVID cut" session, and be instructed on how to style their hair into the "golden M", a branded reinvisioning of an iconic 1990's haircut. Post-lockdown plans for this location are currently unknown."
At the Covid-19 regulations, Barbers must be closed, but restaurant can serve a pick-up meal, so while waiting for your meal, let's do a haircut.
Load More Replies...im done with this i am not reading or even looking at the rest on this list this is just to cringey
Looks like what we used to call a "butt-cut", back in my day lol.
I've grown one of these, thanks to Covid lockdown. Didn't think I'd end up keeping it, but it suited me so well that I did. It's also a lot easier to tie back than regular bangs.
Now you too can sport the hideous hair-do of 90s Boy Bands while enjoying your McRib!
Dinkytown McDonald's (1963) Minneapolis, Mn
"Deceased as of 4pm cst yesterday, 12/14/2020. This McDonald's long served as a late-night oasis for university of Minnesota students. Its closure comes in the wake of a proposed new mixed-use development in the area. If this plan comes to fruition, a new McDonald's location is set to open in its first floor."
I've been there!!! One time during a STEM summer camp we were biking over here and then our instructor told us to stop so he could get fries. We then biked over to a park where he ate his fries in front of us, but then we had to leave because a bunch of drunk guys were looking at us weirdly.(It was all girls)
