Covid May Be The First Reason People Started Wearing Face Masks, But People In This Online Group Discovered 30 More Advantages Of Them
While professions like doctor and engineer have been, for safety and security reasons, making their workers wear masks, the pandemic has pretty much made it into a standard thing, so for most it has felt quite unreal to be wearing them everywhere they went.
However, while it is a bit of an inconvenience—especially for those who wear glasses—the pros surely outweigh the cons, and there is actually quite a sizable number of people who enjoy wearing a mask, and would most likely continue wearing them for non-COVID reasons.
People of Reddit have been discussing just that—reasons why people like to wear masks, outside necessity due to the pandemic. And, believe it or not, quite a lot of people found ample reasons to wear a mask, sharing these reasons with the internet.
Bored Panda has collected the best and most interesting answers to the AskReddit question what’s a non-COVID reason that you like wearing a mask for? and created a curated list that you can find below. So, check it out, vote, comment, and let us know if you prefer wearing a mask more than just to keep yourself safe from airborne diseases.

It greatly decreases the amount of times that I've been told by men to, "SMILE".
Why do guys do this. Some are aggressive with it. Please can someone answer this question.
I've never once, in my 40 years on this planet, been told by anyone to smile. I have had numerous people tell me I'm terrifying; maybe that's why. Regardless, I consider it a gift that no one's ever told me to smile.
Protection from other illnesses too like during flu season. So many people go out and about even while sick without a mask (pre covid). I wish it could become a new normal to wear a mask if you're feeling sick and have to go out, even after mask mandates end.
I remember seeing a shot from China (before covid) where it was the social norm to do exactly this: mask up if you're sick. I remember thinking then "wow, I'd like to live in a society with those kind of values" - got my wakeup call when covid came around. The US is not that society.
During my annual performance review at work this year, I realised that I only took two days' sick leave in a year, for migraines. I never got sick. Not as much as a cold.
It's going to be my new normal. This is the healthiest I, along with my kids, have ever been and it only took a pandemic to make this happen. Oh, the irony.
I had strept back in 2008 and while waiting on my prescription, I put my pashmina around my head and mouth. Some woman said very close to my face, "I hate you Muslims." I took it off around my mouth and said: "I'm not Muslim I have strept throat." Oh the look on her face. 😁
Exactly. Since my heth deteriorated I got soo many times a cold or flu between 2018-2019. I didnt get anything until this summer when masks werent mandatory anymore at my partners job
Load More Replies...I so naively thought that'd be a silver lining of the pandemic; that we as a society might normalize wearing a mask to protect others when we're sick, or in general during cold and flu seasons. I was such a fool to think that was possible...
I had the same. I hoped that if we could get something out of this was normalising masks when you are ill and promoting working/studying from home. Sadly its not happening.
Load More Replies...This. I habitually get at least one nasty cold per winter. About half the time, it escalates into bronchitis. The past two winters, I haven't gotten a single cold. Masks FTW!
Since mask mandates happened, I've not caught so much as a cold. This is huge for me as I've got four autoimmune disorders that, because of the meds I have to take to control them, have left me with essentially no immune system. I used to get colds at least once a month, strep throat five or six times a year, the flu at least three times a year, among other common maladies. Since COVID came along and I've been wearing a mask in public and been vigilant about sanitizing/washing my hands...no illnesses. I will always wear a mask in public, even if COVID is ever controlled enough to not necessarily need one.
Same here. I'm on antirejections (organ transplant) to suppress my immune system and have been wearing masks since 2015. I haven't had any ailments since then except when I got covid.

I can talk to myself without people seeing my mouth move.
I thought I was the only one! I mouth things I want to say but really shouldn’t, and that is gonna be hard to stop.
Honestly I can totally see myself accidentally mouthing “f**k you” to a customer after the mask mandate ends 😂
Load More Replies...I've gotten so used to this that I also assume they can't hear me. They can.
When we won't have to wear masks anymore, I am going to need to shut up and I have no idea how I will do this.
YES! Oh, I'm not alone....it's going to be terrible if I have to give up my masks in stores and my quiet rants are HEARD: "you look terrible, punk, pull up your pants". (I'm 78.)
Given the amount of people saying this, I think we should just normalize talking to ourselves.
Its nice and warm in the winter
Guess it depends on the climate and the material your mask is made of. Mine get all literally wet, like, water inside the mask, because of my breath condensation. It does get less painful to breath the dry cold air, though, this one I admit. It kinda feels like burning inside your nose when exposed directly. Anyway, I'm not an anti-masker, but I keep looking forward to going back to wearing masks only when feeling sick. It's uncomfortable, and I miss my make-up too. u.u
Same, I find them disgusting and uncomfortable in winter because the water in my breath condenses on them
Load More Replies...It's nice and warm until, in -15C / 5F, you take it off for a bit because you're outside alone and it's getting a little damp. No forget that - it's soaked. And while you had it off you face, it froze solid. And now that you need to go in somewhere to get a coffee, you can't get it back on your face until you warm it in your hands for a few minutes. It's a double-edged sword... :)
This morning -19C. Put on a mask even tho I was going to work so early nobody else was around.
So true!! They are unbearable in summer but in winter i wear them even when walking alone in the park so my nose doesn't fall from the cold
Feels nice for allergy sufferers. I'll tolerate the heat as long as I don't inhale pollen

Mine don't fog up since I found a mask that fits perfectly.

Asthma. Breathing is easier if I don’t have to smell peoples crappy perfume.
Someone needs to tell those people that you're not supposed to bathe in the stuff, that only someone close to you should be able to smell your perfume.
Perfume as well as cologne, body spray, baby oil, talcum powder- any of them could trigger my asthma.
Yaaaazzzzz! Please, people, stop drenching yourself in cheap perfume. A little soap and water works wonders.
Yes, I do enjoy the fact I didn't smell the mangoes in the supermarket!
No one thinks I'm a Trump supporter
Why? Democrats and independents are patriotic too

Because in America everything is politicized. It just wouldn't be America without politicizing everything. We shiuld actually be called the Divided states of America because politics divides everything and everyone. Nothing about America is United, its a facade. Living in harmony and equality/equity would be just too hard and uncomfortable. (Obvious Sarcasm)

Plus I'm allergic to the masks which is fun after more than 10 mins
Load More Replies...This is overlooked too often! So many people I know, including myself, have commented on how much better they feel during allergy season thanks to masks!
So does my mother! She is trying to get me on this bandwagon but instead I just cough and sneeze for a day after cutting the grass, like an idiot.

I'm a fresh heart transplant patient and I'm required to wear one in public for the first year. Not strictly COVID, but literally any pissbaby infection that most anyone can shrug off could end me at this stage.
I had a liver transplant in 2014 and consider it my DUTY to the mother of the young man who gave me a second chance at life to do whatever it takes to protect his gift.
You've inherited a heart. It's yours to keep now. Nice that you're so fiercely thankful!

That's my every day reality, living with four autoimmune disorders. I'm in immunosuppressive medications for life that have, in the past, left me open to every single opportunistic infection known to man. Something as simple as a scratch that breaks the skin has seen me in the ICU with sepsis. I've gone through 46 bouts of sepsis since 2017. I nearly lost my right arm after a very minor cat bite last year; three emergency surgeries during lockdown saved my arm and my life. Right before being wheeled into the OR with the first surgery, the surgeon warned me that he'd likely have to amputate right below the elbow if the infection had gotten into the bone. It was a very close call; the infection had reached the bone but not yet gotten inside.
It allows me to pull faces at people who annoy me at the grocery store without repercussions. Which actually makes the whole process more pleasant.
Remember not to do it, when the mask mandate lifts. A friend told me.
I get to childishly stick my tongue out at people. I like that.
YES, isn't it fun?? I'm 78 and don't dress conventionally anyway* so I'm just continuing to wear masks. *I wear floor length calico dresses in fabulous prints made for me by a dear friend; she sent me a box of masks that MATCH my frocks! I'm wearing 'em for life. (pun not intended) I love sticking my tongue out at people....
And don't stick your tongue out at someone - I made that childish mistake and yeah, a mask doesn't help.
Am autistic, makes it much easier to be around people because you don't have to worry about what your face is doing.
Thank you! My son has autism and never, ever wants to take it off. He has even slept in it
Yeah, but then I can’t tell what people are feeling, and get worried that they are mad at me because that’s what their eyes look like, but they might just be squinting and it’s annoying
Don't have autism(to my knowledge), but I too love masks for this reason!
I'm also autistic and have found myself making strange facial expressions at the wrong time, so this is totally a good reason for me.
I feel this, ADHD, Autism running in my family, and severe (but well hidden) social anxiety
I'm gutted as I'm autistic but the opposite. I can't wear a mask due to huuuuuuge sensitivity around anything touching or being near my face, can't even wear a scarf. I struggle with hats even but have to as I was really clii oh we to frostbite one winter and don't want to go through that again. I hate it
Hiding my face. Just going about my business, DON'T LOOK AT ME!
Don’t look at me. Don’t acknowledge me. I don’t exist. *fades back into the shadows*
There's usually only one reason people want to hide their faces. Are you a criminal?
Oh I'm sure there's only "one" reason. You ever been bullied? Made to feel like you are worthless and not beautiful in your own way? Ever feel depressed and want to hide under the covers all day but instead have to go to work? Does social media and even basic beauty products really not make you feel just a teeny bit self conscious because you are not even close to the flawlessly photoshopped, heavily makeuped models skin type? Seriously doubt it and if none of this has ever applied to you... Congrats. Not everyone is able to ignore this though so we enjoy covering our faces. Thanks for assuming that I, and others who enjoy wearing a mask, are freaking "criminal". Hope you feel good about yourself. Oh, and one last thing. Before you try to say it's a "joke", think again. Context. You had none.

I HATE that! Only thing that really bothers me about having to wear them. I'm friggin 48 years old and am actually contemplating buying some Stridex (if they even still make that) when I go to the store later. SMH

Don’t have to put on a full face of makeup. Fill in my eyebrows, put on mascara and I’m good!
It’s alll fun and games until you have to drink your Fiji hydration liquid

Anxiety
bitfarb replied:
This right here. Combined with my hat I feel so much more comfortable doing my shopping. I'm out in the open, but still in my protective cocoon. Covid has been nothing but stress, but oddly it's the most comfortable and confident I've felt in public.
Definitely helps my anxiety. I've had so many issues with my face, going back 20-odd years. Masks take care of that. Downside is that I also have anxiety about not understanding people, and masks make that worse.
Listen to their tone of voice and watch their eyes and how their standing (aka, body language! ) hope that helped love
Load More Replies...Initially it was the opposite for my anxiety because I rely heavily on facial cues to determine safety and keep the fight or flight in check. People have learned to emote a little better and I've found safety behind a mask
Mouthing along to the song I’m singing in my head without getting weird looks
This is totally me !! Especially when shopping! Now nobody can see me and I can sing freely. Fantastic!!
I don't have to mind my expression as much. Like... normally, people can see your mouth and it's expected to have certain expressions. I don't have to sweat that as much with a mask on.
This is my favourite part. I cant walk well so any light walking makes me pant. With the mask nobody sees it (so I dont get judged) and I dont need to worry about them seeing my idiot face while breathing throughout my mouth
Doesn't work for me, as I have glasses so it's more noticeable!

I drink coffee and don't have the best oral hygiene. Used to be that sometimes I'd realize that my breath was bad while talking and it would destroy my confidence. Now the mask takes care of that. Not only does it mask the odor well, but it makes me more cognizant of it. And my oral hygiene has actually improved for it...
Mr. Bear is just so excoited! You can make cupcakes out of ANYTHING🤣
Load More Replies...I have to admit that I brush my teeth in the morning regulary now. If I forgot, the hour way to work is... unpleasant.
No offense, but how can anyone feel ready for the day without brushing their teeth first? It's the first thing I do every morning
Load More Replies...If you regularly brush your teeth,, floss or use mouthwash and your breath still smells bad. You should see a doctor as it could be a sign of some other ailment
This is my favorite. Not because I have bad oral hygiene, but because I'm both guarded against giving stink breath in face to others, and guarded against receiving it. It's weird. If I go out, with a mask and a: I smell anything, I'm freaked out because that means either my mask is not doing it's job correctly, or b: if I smell nothing I've lost my sense of smell and that's a big symptom of COVID. . Round and round she goes! Lol
Wearing a mask gives my completely deaf right ear something worthwhile to do. As I can't hear anything through it, that ear's only other function is to add handsomeness and symmetry.
Whenever I’m concentrating or working on a task I tend to stick my tongue out or leave my mouth open and I really like it when people don’t see that
Defeats the facial recognition software.
In some countries that's a blessing. What's going on in Hong Kong now is sad.
with good camera resolution, eyes are enough for face recognition
Load More Replies...Are you sure about that? I don't mean government surveliance, I mean private. For example, I'm sure my phone is listening to me all the time, that is the only way to explain some ads I'm getting recently (big ass cisco servers, special glues, M2 drives,... not things I use at home or look for, but talk about in work daily). Maybe cameras are also getting data and send it home. I don't know if they do, I hope not, but for some reason I have my doubts.

Black mask goes hard with my outfit and hairstyle
Actually, yes, in Korea, you could see young men / boys wearing masks as a fashion statement even before the corona. After the pandemic hit, I even saw some confessions on YT about how they feel about it. Like, "I used to wear it to look cool, but now, this was unexpected..." stuff like that.
I have masks for every colour way. Plus a black sequin one for evening
Covers my double chin
Yes, and anyone who has dental issues. Masks help so much with insecurities, when it comes to missing teeth.

My room is dry and I have been having a lot of bloody noses..if I wear a mask to bed the dry air doesn’t get to my nose and it keeps my face warm lol
ooh i need to try this... i also get bloody noses in dry air, but haven't thought of wearing it to bed.
I used to get bloody noses too and also suffer from dry eyes, until I got a humidifier, which has been a life saver. I now have several small ones I bought off of Amazon placed here and there, and a large one for the bedroom.
Load More Replies...Yes! My nose is also sensitive to dry air, wearing a mask is also wonderful in airplanes or cars with strong air conditioning. I used to wear masks on airplanes because of that before covid.
I was in New York a month ago (I live in Florida). It wasn’t cold enough for New Yorkers to wear scarfs yet, but it felt like it to me because I live in the south. So wearing a face mask was a handy way to warm my face without looking like a tourist lol
I have a massive gag reflex that gets really sensitive in the winter, especially when moving from a warm air environment out into a cold air environment. Winter for me means painful retching and a bit of vomiting 2 to 3 times a day since I was 14 (27 now). Since wearing masks, the air I breathe is warmer and my gag-reflex calms down.
Also, with an FFP2 mask, no more black bogies bogeys when using the London Underground.
In the summer, it reduced my hay fever symptoms massively.
When you breathe air that has a lot of contamination in it, like in the Underground, you get black boogers

Nobody notices if I didn't shave
I've waxed my upper lip like maybe twice in the past two years. It's great to not worry about the fact that I'm a woman with a moustache that would make some men jealous.
A lot of my newly hired employees are always shocked when they see my goatee. Like when a take my mask down a bit to drink something they see it and are like "WOW! You have a beard?!" Uhh, yah.
god, i hate seeing a mask on a man with a gross shaggy beard hanging out below it! think of all the crud imbedded in that hair!😨
I do too...I don't want to say anything negative about masks, but this look and the look of a small, tight mask on a large face really disgusts me. Some people simply need to procure larger masks.

And you've made the medical community very happy by noticing that correlative effect. :-)

In my workplace (currently, external CAD'er, so I am the outsider, the non-permanent - that might change, but no one knows yet), there still is a mask mandate inside the building, unless you're at your desk and alone. Some obey, some very loudly don't and I'm seriously fed up with this. Corona COULD be over, if people acted reasonably this one, only one time. Yet, they act rational as within an irrational system, defend said system and find something oppressive in a literally life-saving piece of cloth. They're nuts. People in general are nuts.
