With the world going into an unprecedented emergency mode during the Covid-19 pandemic, the job market has also witnessed something it probably didn’t see coming. Workers from different industries have quit en masse, and didn’t bother to return to their offices.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a whopping number, over 47 million Americans, voluntarily quit their jobs in 2021. Amid “the Great Resignation,” many business owners complained of huge staff shortages, hence the widespread claim that “Nobody wants to work in these hard times.”

Today, the sentiment is still alive and well. This Facebook group titled “NO ONE WANTS TO WORK” ridicules a toxic job culture that pushes overworked, disrespected, neglected, and burnt-out employees through the door. In fact, recent data showed that a toxic culture is the biggest factor driving the Great Resignation.

Below we wrapped up the most illuminating posts shared on the group.

Isn’t happiness the goal? Quitting a job where you are unhappy and being free and happy seems like a win-win situation (provided that you still have ways of meeting your basic neeeds).

“The Great Resignation refers to a phenomenon that began in 2021, where a large number of people across various industries and countries decided to voluntarily leave their jobs,” Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, the best-selling author and CEO of Disaster Avoidance Experts told Bored Panda in an interview.

“This mass exodus from the workforce was primarily driven by a combination of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changing work-life balance expectations, and increased demand for higher wages and better working conditions,” he said.

The definition of low-skilled is tied to professional qualifications. Data entry is considered low-skill, Accountancy is not. It's got nothing to do with actual skill level, and everything to do with actual education level - I guess those who have paid six figures for their education to get letters after their name want to protect their club?

Dr. Gleb explained that the pandemic prompted many workers to reevaluate their priorities, leading them to seek out more fulfilling and flexible work opportunities. “Additionally, government stimulus packages and unemployment benefits provided a safety net for some people, enabling them to take time to reconsider their career paths.”

Moreover, business owners often claim that "no one wants to work anymore" due to the difficulties they face in finding and retaining employees during the Great Resignation, Dr. Gleb argues.

“This statement can be seen as a simplification or even a misrepresentation of the actual situation - they are falling into cognitive biases. The labor market has undergone significant changes, and employees' expectations have evolved. Workers are increasingly demanding better pay, improved working conditions, and more flexibility.”

“Employers who fail to adapt to these changes may struggle to attract and retain talent, leading them to perceive that people are unwilling to work,” Dr. Gleb explained.

There are several reasons why employees who quit voluntarily during the Great Resignation might not be in a hurry to return to work, according to Dr. Gleb. One of these reasons is reevaluating priorities. “The pandemic has caused many people to reconsider what they value most in life, leading them to seek out more meaningful work, spend more time with family, or pursue personal interests.”

Another reason why employees do not rush to go back to work is a financial cushion. Dr. Gleb explained that government support, savings, or investments may provide a temporary financial buffer, allowing individuals to take time off to explore new opportunities or simply take a break.

I worked at a multinational IT company, managed their $50M government contract. At the end of the year I didn't get my promised flight tickets to New York that costed 2×$350 at that time because of cost cut. They were surprised I shortly became unmotivated. I switched to self employment and visited Iceland, the Maldives and New Zealand within one year, from my own pocket. And NY, twice. Sent them pictures.

But try to make the doohickeys by yourself, and sell them by yourself, you can't do it without massive investments on machines. And that's why people with money can afford to keep you poor. (Unless you design an unique piece and start production on a 3D printer, that is)

For some, the motive may be job market opportunities. “With the labor market in flux, some employees might be holding out for better job offers, including positions with higher pay, better benefits, or more flexible working arrangements.”

Health concerns may also be the reason why employees who quit don't go searching for new job opportunities immediately. “The ongoing pandemic has made some people wary of returning to work, especially if it involves close contact with others or working in crowded environments.”

The last reason may have to do with people wanting to develop their skills. “Some individuals may be using this time to upskill, retrain, or pursue further education to enhance their employability and career prospects,” Dr. Gleb concluded.

This description is missing something vital. In capitalism there is a party who provides the funding to create the business in the first place. This party also funds improvements and expansions. That is to say, they provide the capital that is essential for making the company operate. In return for these investments, they receive dividends or returns, usually 4 times a year, whenever the company makes a profit. So, in reality, without capitalists most businesses would not exist.

Screw the pizza parties and the nap rooms and the pool tables and the free snacks and drinks. Pass us what we're worth, you would be able to afford it without all these 'extras'.

Paper applications are required from every applicant by federal law. Most employers find that having that filled out at the beginning is the most efficient.

Ride it to work with large speakers strapped to either side playing Ride Of The Valkyries while I blow a party blower nonstop and the elephant wears a shiny party hat.

I'm a coloured (mixed race) South African 31 year old female. Although I didn't feel the pain of apartheid like my parents and grandparents did, the effects are still rife. Back then, we weren't white enough for good jobs. Now when I apply, I'm not black enough due to the "Black Economic Empowerment" (BEE) system which is trying to reverse the effects of apartheid financially, economically, career-wise. It doesn't work. We can't reverse it, but we can learn from it. I'm tired of feeling like I'm never good enough for the good things in my country. Bursaries require race, religion, and other ridiculous things. I am educated, determined, so willing, and I'm a single mother, but I feel like my country doesn't see me. They see black or white. Everything in between seems to be irrelevant. It hurts. I just want a good life for my daughter and I.

Take this notice, and lay it on the managers desk with another, anonymous sign; "this is illegal. Withholding wages is illegal. The State Dept. of Labor has already been informed. I'm looking out for my Team."

Happy employees means better service. Not sure why employers don't get that. It's the foundation of our society at large. Humans are social (typically), removing that removes enjoyment. This in turn affects retention, productivity and general job satisfaction.

I was working on an Alternate History mini-series based on a famous book, written by an equally famous author. The Producers were getting pissed about the rental costs of the very specific, very historically accurate costumes. They actually asked the Costume Designer, and Wardrobe Supervisor, "Can't the Background Actors bring in their own costumes?"...No, gentleman, they can't...because, strangely, actors from New York...many of whom are Jewish... don't have Nazi uniforms hanging in their closets.

Hmmm I'm not sure this person wanted the job to begin with. When you take on responsibility of taking care of animals, you show up on time. You just do. Unless they really went crazy and yelled at her, or threatened her, I don't think the kennel is at fault here. Being late on your second day at any job is just careless. Also, she didn't seem very upset over quitting. I don't know. I could be wrong.
