We’ve all been faced with a moral dilemma before. Should you be honest with your partner when you know something that will hurt them? Maybe in college your best friend asked you to help them cheat while they were in danger of failing a class and having their scholarship revoked. Perhaps you caught a colleague stealing, but if you reported it, he would get fired and would be unable to pay his rent. Unfortunately, life is full of difficult decisions, and ethics are not black and white.

What tends to be a little clearer is what is against the law, regardless of our personal feelings. 3 days ago, Reddit user Dr_vinci reached out to Ask Reddit and posed the question, “What is moral but illegal?” Readers have since flooded the responses with questionable laws that seem to contradict many people’s moral compasses. Below, you can read some of the answers, as well as an interview with Dr_vinci, and decide if you think these laws are justified or not. Then if you’d like to continue pondering the morality of certain laws, check out this Bored Panda piece next.

“What Is Moral But Illegal?”: 30 People Are Sharing Some Of The Dumbest Laws Around The World Where I live, euthanasia. Having had to watch a relative waste away as they could no longer eat properly, had no clue who they were or who anyone else was, and was just so scared…how is making them live or wait until they starve/dehydrate the moral choice?

I am actually passionate about this topic. I believe this is a hard one for so many people, but I believe that the choice should be up to the person when they are of sound mind how they choose to go. As someone that suffers from a handful of conditions that will vastly limit my quality of life and my health as I age, I feel like I should be able to choose not to suffer. I believe that we should have the right to die with as much compassion and dignity as possible.

how is it more human to put down an ill pet, than helping a human being die in dignity?? i should have the choice how and when i want to die if it's important

19 year hospital worker.. it’s actually easy to die. Everyone, write YOUR wishes down. You want to fight till the bitter end. You want the plug pulled in a day or 5 if no neurological function. My husband knows if I am alive but in a vegative state, keep me clean, keep me comfortable. No artificial hydration, NO antibiotics. Next pneumonia is my last. Write down YOUR wishes and make copies. Tell family. If you’re in a hospital a lot, make sure they have a copy. You CAN die with dignity. And allow natural death.

I watched my dad slowly suffocate to death over the period of two weeks and they had to keep him passed out because the pain of it all was too great. Watching your father slowly die while you just wait for their breathing to stop is inhumane.

Our family already has this sorted. Treatment only if realistic (not hopeful) chance of same or improved quality of life. No life support, no heroic measures. My mom already has arrangements if she becomes bedridden. Same for my self.

There’s no question that morals vary from person to person. Most people would be horrified if you mentioned taking your dog outside and shooting it. But when it comes to other animals, public opinion greatly varies. Ask a farmer if it’s okay to kill cattle and use their meat for food, and you’re probably going to get a different answer than if you asked a vegan the same question. Or if you asked someone who is Hindu. What’s interesting about morals is that not only do they vary across cultures and religions, but they also change over time and within the same person, depending on the gravity of a situation.

Morality is even an evolutionary trait, according to some psychologists. Dr. Jean Decety, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Chicago, wrote in an article exploring the topic, that "our morality has been formed over thousands of years from the combination of both our genes and our culture, rather than just one or the other. This genetic and cultural evolution has shaped our brains to care for others, react to those who try to harm us, and to create moral rules that help us to live together successfully.”

If you're American and need an abortion, I live in Massachusetts. I will gladly pick you up at Bradley, host you while you're here, take you to and from the clinic, and drive you back to Bradley when you're recovered and ready to fly home. It is unconscionable that any government interferes in necessary health care, and women need to stick together. Mi casa es su casa.

As I see, most of these abortion-ban states/countries are too frigid to talk about sex and reproduction. Without proper education there will be more unwilling pregnacies, and more people, who can't fit in the education system, because they have to raise the accident child. Coincidance?

Too many people believe abortion is about getting rid of a viable pregnancy when in reality abortion is for more reasons than that. And it can save lives. It's not a black and white issue but too many religious people try to make it that way. No one should tell anyone else what they should do with their bodies!! Period!

There is a very interesting article/podcast from Freakonomics episode 384 entitled 'Abortion and Crime, Revisited' wherein they discuss the correlation between legalized abortion and a significant drop in crime. While the entire podcast is worth the listen (or transcript read) what it boils down to is an 'unwantedness effect' on youth drives up crime rates. So will we see an immediate effect on crime rates if Roe v Wade is overturned? no, we will end up seeing a rise in crime in 15 or so years

Funny how the politicians and religious zealots (who claim that every life is sacred and life starts at conception) stop giving a damn about those lives as soon as they leave the uterus. They want to force women to give birth, but not support them or their families in any way.

    View more comments

Dr. Decety went on to say that there are “three main lines of evidence that support the view that our brains are wired for morality”. The first being that “the building blocks of morality have been observed in non-human animals”. Rodents and primates exhibit “prosocial behaviors”, opting to help and console one another when someone is in trouble or distressed. Chimpanzees console victims after fights, and rats choose to help fellow rodents before seeking a food reward. Although monkeys and rats don’t have the same depth of moral code as humans, the fact that they display empathy towards each other suggests that morality is a product of evolution.

Yes. But if the food isn’t guaranteed to be fresh/healthy, would you as owner risk lawsuits, coz you didn’t follow your health safety routines? Some companies can get closed down for not following them. So what we need is exceptional laws or something so it’s legal and safe for people to give it away, maybe even with bonus payments, so companies don’t lose money on additional work it might take. Whatever is the main reason in your countries. Or something similar.

Our main stores all offer food about to expire (but not yet expired) for half price. The fresh, unpacked produce like bread or veggies and fruit go to the ngo "die Tafel", which is a place for low-income people to get food-packages. I'm sure jt has many flaws but s much better system than just throwing it away and forbidding people to take it

The next reason Dr. Decety cites to support that we are “wired for morality” is the fact that even babies exhibit early signs of having morals. Psychologists who study human development note that babies start forming social relationships before they’re even a year old. And toddlers as young as 18-months realize when their mothers are upset and try to comfort them with patting, hugging and sharing toys. Impressively, babies even understand the concept of fairness by the time they’re a year old. When a group of 1-year-olds witnessed cookies being distributed to a group, they understood and expected everyone to receive the same amount.

Concerning El Dee: no downvotes deserved! Of course there are nazis in ukraine. There are nazis all over the globe, possibly even in antarctica. But as they said, that is not the reason putin invaded and even IF that were it, thatis still a breach of International laws and declaration of war! You can't just invade a country just because you disagree with their politics. Not russia, not us, not japan or switzerland are allowed to do that! So... B******t for "reason". I don't think the russians were very competent iN syria, though, since they mostly bombed syrians who are against the president. And also: the russian airforce had not been used as proficiently in ukraine. Maybr because they were still in syria perhaps? It had been a fear of the west that putin would bring them. Nobody knows quite why he hasn't.

Next, Dr. Decety mentions that “the parts of the brain involved in moral judgments are beginning to be identified”. Neuroscientists have examined how moral behaviors change in people who have brain lesions, and it has been determined that our brains don’t simply have one moral center. Various parts of the brain handle different aspects of making moral decisions (emotional reactions, self-control, intelligence, caregiving behaviors). When someone experiences trauma to their ventromedial prefrontal cortex in early childhood, they’re more likely to break moral rules and cause physical harm to others. People who have suffered damage to their ventromedial prefrontal cortex “also tend to experience less empathy, embarrassment, and guilt”.

In Germany you're allowed to sleep in your car drunk as long as it doesn't look like you want to drive off, so: don't put the key in the ignition and/or sleep on the passengers seat or in the back.

Depends on the country, but ordinarily if it appears that you may have had intent to operate the vehicle then yes, you can be charged. If say you are in the back seat and the keys are in the glovebox then it might be ok. But if you are in the front seat and the keys are in your pocket then there is a case to prove as to whether you intended to drive.

Under UK Law just having you car keys while drunk can have you charged. The UK Law states 'Driving or being in charge of a motor vehicle' (Road traffic act 1988 Section 5). There is case law that shows holding the keys of a vehicle is considered 'being in charge' of the car, and people have been convicted as a result.

It is a very grey area in the UK. The police can charge you with being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle even if you are not holding the keys, but they then have to prove that you intended to drive the vehicle. There was a local case recently where the police charged the owner of a motorhome that was parked in a layby overnight for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle when they saw the occupants sat in the back drinking a bottle of wine. The magistrates dismissed the case almost immediately it came to court as there was no evidence to suggest that either occupant intended to drive the vehicle. The police were basically trying to discourage people from sleeping in their motorhomes in a place where it was perfectly legal to do so.

As long as your keys aren't in the ignition or your hand pretty sure you're good in the US. Hell I even told a cop that was my plan as I was leaving the bar he said "I don't care as long as you aren't driving.". Passed out for like 5 hours then drove home.

False. Essentially, you need to be in the backseat. They can't claim you were attempting to drive if you're in the backseat

I'm not so sure this is illegal. If the car is running, then they consider it "operating while impaired".If your crashed out in the front seat and the keys are in the back seat, I don't know what they could get you for. I'm sure they could find something cuz they gotta fill that quota though.

Pirating is not moral. Even if the book is out of print, obtaining it without the author's permission is wrong. I am an author and this would disturb me to know that people are stealing my work that I have archived. Being out of print does not release the copyrights.

Obviously I don't think people should pirate and take money from the author, but I think it's bigger moral error to allow knowledge to be lost altogether. Out of print books, music, movies, etc. should be stored somewhere for people to either buy, rent, or otherwise experience. I think it's inexcusable to allow something to be forever lost. Then again, I guess if the author is so consumed with profit (s)he'd rather see it lost forever than see someone get it for free, maybe it's really not worth preserving.

We reached out to Dr_vinci to hear where the inspiration for this post came from, and he told us he had heard the question somewhere else and was so curious that he decided to start his own discussion around it. When asked if he trusts law enforcement, he told us that he still does, but that the government makes questionable calls sometimes. "I'm fairly happy with the laws we have, other than some weapon regulations." He also notes his frustration with the banning of airsoft guns and "Black Rifle Coffee Company" due to its name. While gun control laws are a controversial topic, Dr_vinci does not consider them a moral issue. "I think there's no problem with us having better guns or switchblades," he told us. Whether you agree with him or not on these issues, it is a great reminder of how relative morality is.

This is not really true, at least not for the average person. The story behind it is not about Someone filling up a smallish container, let’s say 1000 gallons (~3500 litres). But there was some dude who built dams and rerouted waterways on his land to collect water in massive reservoirs. https://www.watercache.com/blog/2012/09/rainwater-collection-leads-to-jail-sentence-how-news-headlines-get-it-wrong

I looked this up because it sounded so strange. It doesn't seem to actually be illegal anywhere, just controlled as to how and where you collect it, what you collect and store it in, and what you do with it. Nevada is the most restrictive, requiring you to apply for a water right grant. __ https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/states-where-it-is-illegal-to-collect-rainwater

It's not illegal, it's regulated. For example, a rancher in my area built a berm dam to hold back rain surface-water. But the man didn't know a dam thing about building a berm dam, and it threatened to wash out. The damage from that would have been horrible for the people downstream. This is the type of regulation their talking about.

It was illegal in my state until recently. Now you can collect 1 barrel every month. The theory behind it is pretty iffy. It is based on the fact that the state owns the water in the rivers from cradle to grave. So once it hits Earth, it is theirs. That makes collecting rain water theft. I do not agree. But if collecting rainwater was allowed without restriction, someone would collect it all and sell it to California and our farms and people would go thirsty.

While morality is in our nature, various factors play a part in moral relativism, including cultural differences. Aside from my earlier example of eating meat, a few other topics that can be controversial depending on the culture and religion are dancing, polygamy, gambling, drinking alcohol, abortion, sex before marriage, having children outside of marriage, assisted suicide and gay marriage. Many of us know exactly where we stand on those topics and may not even consider some to be moral issues, but a 2014 study by the Pew Research Center surveyed 40 countries on some of these subjects to see just how opinions varied across the world. Views on extramarital affairs, for example, were similar in most countries. But in France, only 47% of those surveyed considered having an affair unacceptable, and 40% did not consider it a moral issue at all.

The policy of banning or placing significant restrictions on "men who have sex with men" came about in the 80's as a response to HIV/AIDS being transmissible by blood and, at the time, being much more prevalent in the gay population. The latter no longer being true, and the former being handled with careful testing of every donation, it is far past time for these policies to be completely removed.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, this pre-screening eliminates up to 90 percent of donors who may be carrying a blood-borne disease." Which was updated..."On April 2, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was updating its policy regarding blood donations from men who have sex with men, reducing the deferral period from 12 months to three months."

This is not accurate. You can share information but you cannot coordinate your fees. You are able to use aggregated information that is three months old, contains at least five practitioners, and doesn't identify single practitioners, as well. This data is available from several data aggregators for this express purpose. Also, regarding charging patients, there are exceptions for patients with demonstrated financial need.

Q2: What if a hospital wants to discount charges to patients with large medical bills? A2: In the same way that a hospital can waive collection of charges for individuals under its indigency policy, a hospital may also offer discounts to those who have large medical bills. Hospitals have flexibility in establishing their own indigency policies. The separate issue of how Medicare reimburses for the uncollectible deductibles and coinsurance of Medicare beneficiaries will be discussed in answers below.

When I worked in wheelchair repair, we couldn’t sell an item to a client if it was covered by Medicare. For example, a client’s tires and inner tubes would be covered by Medicare, so if they wanted an extra set in case of a flat tire we couldn’t sell it to them. Our workaround when they invariably talked about how dumb that was was to say, “I know. It’s so crazy that some of our clients have sent in friends or family to make the purchase without mentioning who it’s for.” Wink wink.

People can be so nasty about it too. One time I stopped and gave a begging man $20 and some dude in a pickup truck pulled up behind me and started screaming at me that the guy was a scammer. I said I don't care. It's my money and he shouldn't have any say in what I choose to do with it. Some people think the world revolves around their opinions.

Morals also shift over time. At one point in time, unmarried men and women could not even be alone in a room together without it being considered sinful. And while slavery is now viewed as an atrocity, it was once widely accepted in the United States and many other countries. Both racism and homophobia were normalized for many years behind the guise of religious morality, but times are changing. Sadly, there is still progress to be made in combatting racism, homophobia and transphobia, but hopefully eventually, these hateful beliefs will be unanimously regarded as immoral.

This is absolutely not true in the US: "Passed in 1996, the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects restaurants from civil and criminal liability should a recipient get ill or hurt as a result of consumed donated food." Whoever owns that Dunkin Donuts franchise is either ignorant or a liar.

There is a law is some countries, including Poland, where I live, making it mandatory for shops to donate their about to expire unsold food to NGOs who the distribute it to people in need. There is no such law for fast food joints, but some do it anyway, depending on management.

Isn't insulin insanely overpriced in the US? If that's the case, I totally understand. Where I live, it's not that expensive so it's a safety issue here. Stuff can degrade and become toxic. Same thing with pills. We take them back to the pharmacy to destroy.

It is. Insulin has had the highest price hike over the years than any others. New regulations are making it less expensive with insurance, but it is still high. And Aisling is correct. It is not illegal to donate unopened, unexpired diabetic supplies. Everywhere.

Yes, needs a pedigree from manufacturer to the end consumer. There’s continuous digital temperature monitoring on the refrigerators from manufacturer to wholesaler to pharmacy. Then the patient picks it up and there’s no way to confirm it was kept within the manufacturer’s specified range 24/7. -source I’m a pharmacist. Don’t share used insulin. Laypeople don’t wash their hands, sanitize the vial, they’ll re-use needles if they’re running low, they’ll store it in their truck, they’ll get chew on it… it’s a biological product. You shouldn’t even share insulin pens between patients in a hospital given the heightened risk of disease transmission. The problem is insurance companies charging $300 for a $10 vial of insulin.

Ridiculous! As a diabetic, I am so glad that I have great insurance. I can't donate used meters or their testing strips (in sealed containers). I can't donate unopened bottles of insulin because I can't prove how it was stored. New boxes of pen needle tips, sealed bags of sterile syringes, sealed boxes of sterile syringes with needles - none can be donated because they might have been tampered with. I can't legally give them away to indigent relatives. It is so sad and crazy.

My husband taught his kids to stand up for the ones being picked on. He went to more than a few meetings at school for his kids getting in the middle of a bully and his victim. This was in the 90s and early 00. Today, the cops would be called and he would be in jail for abuse and his kids would be in counseling for standing up for the underdog. It is the one-size-fits-all method of education brought on by the Department of Education. wrong on all levels.

Morals can also be fluid for individuals, depending on the desperation of their current situations. When asked point-blank if stealing is wrong, most people would probably say yes. But if you ask a single mother fleeing from an abusive relationship who’s unsure where her child’s next meal will come from, she might justify stealing a sandwich from a grocery store for her daughter. Viewing morality as too black and white and ignoring the nuance of individual situations can lead to dangerous decision making.

Probably. Capitalism rules and all that. Why the hell are the voting lines so long that people need water, anyway? In Australia, there are at least 15-20 booths set up in the voting hall and it only takes about 5 minutes to vote. (Depending on if you know who you're going to vote for). There can be a bit of a queue to get into the hall, depending on what time you go, but there are generally charity groups running a sausage sizzle (sausage and onions in bread with tomato sauce) and sometimes soda/water. The lines move fairly quickly, but certainly people are not there long enough to be "gasping for something to drink"(unless it's the people handing out how-to-vote cards). I know that Australia only has 25 million people compared to the US' 300 million, but surely things could be more organised there than making people stand in line for hours?

Dollar general. Their items go a penny. If you are lucky enough to find penny items on the shelves before the staff removes them then you buy them for a penny. Once they pull them I have heard some pour bleach on them before they put them in the dumpster. Some just destroy they items. Anything like grills to socks. Every item will end up a penny eventually so the newer style can be brought in.

Many of the laws mentioned on Reddit may seem harmless at first glance, but they can disproportionately target poor and homeless individuals. In the United States in particular, homelessness has been notoriously criminalized, despite the fact that there are over 550,000 people without homes. Being homeless itself is not illegal, but there are plenty of restrictions around where individuals can camp, loiter, and panhandle. Many businesses also will not allow people to use their restrooms without purchasing something first, leaving homeless people with no access to toilets and running water.

Although slow moving, this one is beginning to change in the US. This one now differs by state. For example I know in Colorado and Ohio it is now legal to break a window to save an animal. <3 Animals are also beginning to have more protection under the law.

It is SUUUUUUUUUPER illegal in my state to leave pets or children in a hot car (it's pretty much hot here all the time) and you better believe the cops will bust out your window AND give you a ticket, AND shame you, AND leave you standing there with your broke a*s window. Seen it with my own eyes 😁

Taking food out of trash cans and picking up clothes retailers dump behind their stores seem like perfectly harmless ways for the poor to gain resources and reduce waste, but even those acts are illegal in certain places. With no access to food and no money for clothing, it’s ridiculous to criminalize acts of survival. Even those who have cars but are living in poverty are faced with a mountain of restrictions. It can be extremely challenging to find places that allow overnight parking, and sleeping in a car is illegal in many places as well, with the risk of racking up exorbitant parking tickets. For individuals who don’t feel safe returning home, perhaps due to an abusive partner or parent, they should feel secure knowing that there is somewhere to go.

I ddo wondder how many people commenting here live in a area with a large honeless population? Do you enjoy hearing drunken/drug fueled shouting matches 30 feet from your bedroom at 3 am ? Walking around human feces on the sidewalk when walking your dog? Being asked for money at almost every gas station and grocery store you go to? Going tro a public park and seeing syringes and literal encampments making it mostly a no go zone? I am not heartless but unless you actually live in an area with a big homeless population you probably dont have any idea of what its like. This is from the Bay area but im sure folks in Portland LA NYC etc can also confirm the reality.

“What Is Moral But Illegal?”: 30 People Are Sharing Some Of The Dumbest Laws Around The World In Japan? Recycling someone's garbage without permission. Touching their garbage at all. You could use a discarded couch and save it from the garbage dump, but be arrested for it.

I feel like this needs a bit more of an explanation. In Japan, you don’t just throw anything away. Garbage is sorted into no less than 3 categories (but usually closer to 6-8 categories). There is a size limit to most of those. No one would put a couch out to the curb. You would either have the city pick it up from your place or you would have to bring it to the dump yourself (and pay a butt ton of money for either of those services). Most still-usable items can go to the resale shops. Also most other items have to stripped down and divide into the different garbage types. Like an umbrella. Plastic pieces would go in non-burnable, cloth goes in burnable, metal parts go in the metal/glass bag. So finding a whole item with all its parts would be hard to find anyway. And yes, it takes a while to learn how to sort your garbage here.

Theoretically also in germany. When put on the streets garbage is in ownership of the city. So you don’t take trash, you take property of the city. Some cities had such large garbage resell groups that they had to enforce all kinds of procedures against it. And after seeing a kid sitting on a broken washmachine, to protect it from being taken by someone else, for 3h in raging rain, I kinda am supporting this.

    Nubis Knight

Same in Germany: the garbage still is in the posessions of the one putting it on the street and only the garbage truck and workers are allowed to Pick it up. So if the wind plays "windwichteln" with your garbage it's your responsibility to clean it up.

Lastly, sometimes individuals need to break laws intentionally to fight against discrimination. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested five times during his life, fighting for equality. Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting in New York in 1872. In 2020, over 17,000 people were arrested during Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd. In times of injustice, doing something illegal can be the best way to illustrate your strong morals.

Why would anyone want to bring kids into this world? Why do bible thumping jackasses get to tell a woman what they can or can't do with their bodies? Why do so many people govern according to the "rules" of a fake man in the sky? Why do we keep falling for the lies and promises of change when all the rich want is more money and more power? Why can't we just help each other with respect and find a basic standard of life without being yelled at for being a socialist by people who don't even know what that word means? Why can't we be who we want to be and love who we want to love without being prosecuted? Why do we, the people who are angry, put up with this? I try to be a positive person, but it's getting to be almost impossible.

The so called "Don't Say Gay" Bill in FL has no wording like that. It simply doesn't allow teachers to talk about sex of any kind with kids from kindergarten through 3rd Grade. Not saying I'm a proponent of the bill, but what the media has named it, is inaccurate.

The media named it that because it doesn't say gay once, in the entire thing. And it's not sex, it's gender identity and sexuality (any that isn't cishet). And it lets teachers out closeted children to their parents, which is dangerous to the kid.

I feel like this needs more context. Yes it is illegal BUT there is a reason. Unfortunately, there is human garbage out there who will say a child is being abused and go so far as to coach or threaten the child to agree with them, just to spite the other parent or guardian. There was a case where this happened and eventually the child confessed to the grandparents because the parent who was making the accusations of abuse was actually the abuser. To prevent this, you can't just accuse somebody of something and then take the kid. That doesn't mean that it doesn't suck for children who are really in an abusive environment, but there was at least a modicum of thought that went into that law

Children may be removed from a parent due to exigent circumstances by legal authorities or Child Welfare. 'Child Custody' is a term that is rarely used in a legal sense. Parents are allotted Parenting Time, one has primary Care and neither has 'custody'. A child complaining of abuse to a teacher, counselor, cop, or even a friend's parent can cause that child to be removed from the home until the court decides. Usually, they are given to the other parent or relative until the court allows supervised visits with the alleged abusive parent. Many hoops are jumped through until a final decision by the courts with Social Services input decides which parent gets what.

“What Is Moral But Illegal?”: 30 People Are Sharing Some Of The Dumbest Laws Around The World Sharing medication. I understand that it can be dangerous in some circumstances. But, for example, I work in childcare, and if a child was dying of an asthma attack, I wouldn't be allowed to share my inhaler to potentially save their life. Most people with asthma use the exact same medication, and I don't think a couple of pumps of inhaler would endanger anyone unless they're severely allergic. If I was ever actually in that situation, I think I'd struggle not to share mine. Having the life-saving medication right there and not being allowed to use it seems crazy to me.

It's the "unless they are allergic" possiblity that makes this so dangerous. And even without allergies, it might be the same medication, but not the same dose amount. This is there to protect you - it's life-saving to *you*, you can't be sure it wouldn't be life *ending* for someone else.

Quod est necessarium est licitum. What is necessary [to save life] is legal. Saving live beats keeping the law to the letter. I carry my inhaler with me all the time, and I would not think twice before helping some poor man in his asthma attack.

Is this some pharma lobby US thing again? Emergency situations in just about anywhere would certainly allow this. If Jews and Muslims can use medications that contain pork to save their lives, I’m sure Americans can share medication.

Same with administering Benadryl or Tylenol. For OTC items, you need written permission from the parent and you supply the drugs. For Rx medication, the parents need to supply it in a container marked for their child by the pharmacy.

Because children have died, they had to change the laws on this in Australia (or at lest my state). We were already allowed to have a spare generic epipen, asthma puffer etc in schools and child care incase the child's personal one didn't work or they needed extra, or if they had never had that reaction before. Then a child died because the spare epipen in a childcare centre had been used already by another child, and the law said they couldn't use anyone else's , so they had to change the precedent.

While we can be certain that morals will never be universally agreed upon, let's not forget that it's okay to question the laws that are in place. Sure, we agree to abide by them, but that does not require abandoning critical thinking. Let's all weigh the pros and cons of breaking some silly laws, and consider what our consciences think. I listened, and my conscience is saying that adding a quarter to someone else's parking meter will bring some good karma.

Have you ever been caught breaking a law by doing something you considered moral? We'd love to hear about it in the comments, and don't forget to upvote all of the responses you found most shocking.

“What Is Moral But Illegal?”: 30 People Are Sharing Some Of The Dumbest Laws Around The World In Germany: putting your empty beer bottle next to the trash can in cities instead of into the trash can. Yes, it drives me crazy. I can't let my kid out of the house without shoes on because of all the broken glass (not to mention butts). I wouldn't mind if the city offered bottle-friedly bins with holders for the bottles on the outside. But really, there is no mornal highground for 'letting' people have your trash. If you care, recyle it and donate the deposit you get to shelters.

In San Francisco there's a top on the cans for bottles and cans to make it easier for people to scavenge them, the problem is there's a little door that frequently rusts off and makes a hole so the recycling just goes in the trash.

There are, literally for everything: cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles. But when you are hanging out with your friends having some beers, you won't put your empty can or bottle in your pocket for later recycling. The problem is, they also don't put them in the trash-can.

“What Is Moral But Illegal?”: 30 People Are Sharing Some Of The Dumbest Laws Around The World Refilling parking meters for other people. Years ago, I worked in an affluent town where parking spots where at a premium. This town also had a notoriously efficient parking enforcement troupe. As I mentioned this was an affluent town, so the real crimes (domestic abuse, assaults, etc.) were rarely reported to keep property values high… I digress. Sometimes I would get to park a block or two out of my way to park on a residential street that didn’t require a permit. Otherwise I would be forced to feed the meter two dollars for two hours, then after four dollars for four hours if you didn’t move your car then you would find a citation on your windshield without exception. So, I would take the change out of my cup holders when I had some and feed meters I saw going low in my walk to work. One day this parking attendant saw me from across the street feeding a meter, and shouted for me to stay where I was. She darted towards me completely ignoring the crosswalk (haha). Asked me if that was my car, I asked, what did that matter? She persisted in my answering her question, but ignoring mine. So, I just told her I had to get to work and went about my day. The NEXT day it was like a sting operation, I fed two quarters into a meter I saw had only twenty minutes remaining. No sooner did I turn the handle than she came up behind me from the side alley. She’s shouting at me like I had smashed storefront windows with Molotovs. Next thing I know she is berating me about how much I was costing her personally and the town in lost revenue by doing this for the past few weeks. She wrote me a damn citation for almost a hundred dollars. I of course went to the magistrate to fight it and he dismissed it without a thought. Felt good until she found out what car was mine and was Johnny on the spot with parking tickets from then on. Fun Fact: The town soon after raised enough money to install digital solar powered meters. So they could just automatically fine you the microsecond the time limit lapsed. However, by accident I realized that the machines where inoperable on overcast days. So, on my way home from work (town was almost deserted by 9pm) I took egg and charcoal from the kitchen I worked and would rub that s**t on every meter I walked by. Never once was I stopped for vandalism.

In my city we have a wonderful thing called easyPark.. there are these classic parking meter..you insert your car plate number, money, and you receive a ticket to put inside the car with the end of your parking time or you can use the app, you register, insert your car model and license plate number and with GPS the app recognise this specific parking meter... you start the time on your phone and put an easy park card behind the windshield... the police can check with the license plate if you app is open... and you can extend the time with the app without returning to your car... when you return to your car you stop the timer and pay only the exact time of your stop, you pay with the app with PayPal or credit card (you insert your info only the first time..) No coin needed.. no run back to the car..you pay only what you need..

Parking meters were replaced with parking machines that you enter your license plate # into where I live. It took away the small pleasure of finding a meter with time left on it, or brightening someone else's day by leaving them a meter with time.

And if you just happened to steal a rather large dog that was being abused and then just maybe gave that dog to a 911 operator who also happens to be married to a police chief? Might work out great. Hypothetically speaking of course. I could have done such a thing. And maybe it wasn't the first time. Or the last. ;)

I did this when I was a kid, about 10 or 12. Family around the corner was not allowed to have pets because of neglect and abuse. BFF and I are walking & see these kids throwing a puppy up in the air and not being able to catch it before it hits the ground. We ran up and grabbed him before they could (try) to catch him. Ran home crying and being chased by the older kids (15/16). Yelling for mom the whole way, she met us on the porch. Called SPCA . Parents showed up threatening me and BFF. SPCA showed up while they were there. Dad arrested, mom ticketed. Poor thing didn't make it though . Even after mom sat up with him every night for almost 2 weeks straight to give medication. I'd do it again

Many municipalities make this illegal purely for liability reasons. There have been several lawsuits over scavenging people getting hurt while going through curbside trash and then suing the city, county, waste management contracting company and the homeowner. The company that removes our trash and recycling has as part of their contract with our city that all bins must be labeled as property of the city and that removing contents is illegal and the city must show active enforcement. This became a priority in their agreement after losing a multi-million dollar lawsuit to a homeless person who got sick from eating food scavenged out of a residential trash bin.

I just looked again and they average 2 dozen injury lawsuits a year for people getting injured/sick from scavenging or with the items they’ve scavenged. That it’s illegal, labeled and enforced has limited their settlement payouts.

I blocked traffic on a tollway at rush hour to get a mama goose and her goslings across the road. Somehow she was walking along the center divider with her little yellow fluff ball babies. I stopped to try to keep her from trying to cross but wasn't sure what I was going to do. Another woman stopped and she knew how to properly pick up mama but what about the babies. Then a Illinois State Trooper stopped to tell us to leave them alone, but he was also concerned about a big accident if they just started to walk into traffic. Then a tollway assistant truck stopped and he had a box. The lady picked up mama, the trooper and worker scooped up the babies and we were off. The trooper went first, stopping traffic, four lanes . As he did that the lady with the goose followed him and the guy with the box went also. My job was. to bring up the rear, stop in the center of the highway and hold back traffic, . They went across and deposited the family over a fence so they wouldn't come back. When

No, it's simply adviced to keep driving when an animal is on the road. Braking in panic will only cause a major accident and the animal will probably die just the same. Tough situation, but still the best outcome.

We had a case in the UK of an elderly gentleman who accidentally killed a home intruder because his informed wife was in the other room and he feared for her safety so he fought back. The court found him innocent on the grounds of self-defence, but he was forced to move because the family of the man he had killed started hounding his home.

I'm half and half on this. The existing laws in the UK on self defence are adequate ie you can use violence to ensure they stop being violent but when they cease the attack you must not continue. You could legally kill them under the most extreme circumstances but the law protects against abuse of it by those who are simply violent and will say they 'thought it was an intruder' Most who want this law (in the UK) are the type who enjoy violence..

Not self-defense, per se. It is beating someone beyond the point where you could stop or restrain them, that is what is (and should be illegal) it is not the victim's place to punish in a just society.

Thing is, that could change when couples without kids start having kids, or when a new family moves in. Who knows. You might get a dancer practicing, especially a ballet dancer with their hard pointe shoes. Or you might get a weight lifter, someone with a treadmill, a Wii Dance Revolution mat, a clumsy person that drops everything, a heavy footed walker. Tbh, it would be a pain the a**e for a landlord to meticulously place tenants on floors based on lifestyles and family status. That's why there are rules for reasonable noise levels during certain times that are realistic for everyone. Or maybe the landlord could install better soundproofing in the walls and floors.

Part of the problem is that it's nearly impossible to study the effects of marijuana in the US. Researchers who want to study it have to jump through a ton of hoops, and then they have to get it from a particular lab. The only marijuana they're allowed to study is different from the marijuana commonly sold in the places where it is now legal.

Not arguing with the "... lack of negative consequences" part of your statement, but there is no such thing as a 'scientific study' involving smoking of marijuana. Scientific studies are expensive (in the millions of dollars); huge pharmaceutical companies and well-endowed universities don't have the kind of money to pay for such studies without government funding/grants. And one thing no government will ever fund is a 'scientific study' exploring the mythical "... lack of negative consequences" of marijuana smoking.

In my Australian state, the state schools have 'zones' and to attend that school you have to live in that zone, or give a compelling reason for sending your child there (and acceptance often depends on how many students have been enrolled for that year). Independent and private schools can accept people from any area because they have other criteria for enrollment (and you have to pay to attend).

My property taxes are outrageous due to the amount of money goes to the schools. The surrounding counties pay very little for school taxes and their schools are horrible. I support the idea of keeping the Riff-Raff out of the schools I pay to support.

As long as a person isn't running an auto-body shop out of a parking lot that should be allowed. A neighbor got fined because it took too long to get his car fixed.

I'd love to see the third one introuduced to Portugal! There, the drivers sit with their hands poised to sound the horn if the first driver didn't pull off in less than 0.00000000000000001 seconds.

No, the honking one is good. You get fined €149 in my country for honking unnecessarily. Not saying it never happens, but it doesn't happen a lot and as a result of that we're always on alart when somebody does honk. This is very much a safety measure

Minor rule-breaking like jaywalking in a quiet residential neighborhood, putting a dog poop bag in a 7-11 dumpster, playing with your dog off leash in an empty park, etc. The people in my neighborhood HATE all of these things but like... What's the harm. C'mon.

this right here is my son's left leg. And this is why there are (and should be) leash laws for public spaces. As you might expect the owner of the bull mastiff that did this to my son told us he was peaceful and would "never bite anyone". It wasn't even 15 minutes later that I was holding a compress on my sons leg while waiting for an ambulance. So when you ask whats the harm...look at the photo and try to imagine the trauma being attacked by a 'friendly' dog would inflict on a 10 year old boy. Here's the harm: 1. If you're jaywalking and someone driving can't see you (say, at night), then they could hit and kill you. They'd have to live with that for the rest of their lives, even though you shouldn't have been there. 2. Take your dog's c**p home with you. If that bag bursts in the 7-11 dumpster, it's a health hazard. Or, if you're like a lot of my neighbours and you leave it in a bus stop garbage bin, everyone at the bus stop has to smell it and deal with the flies and animals that come to eat it. Your dog's s**t is nobody's issue but your own. 3. How do you know that park is empty? And again, what if you lose sight of your dog and it takes a dump somewhere? Or runs into the road? Or attacks a child you didn't see? How does this have 7 upvotes?

At the start of the lockdown in my town (March/April '20) the city was driving around in trucks down my quiet street. A neighbor's relative dropping groceries off for their parents and this a**hat of a city worker stops his truck and tries to give the guy a ticket because he had parked slightly over the sidewalk. Was that really important at the time? It really feels like for all this little BS the town is run by Karen.

Selling drugs to adults. The adults are fully aware that they are buying drugs, they're aware of the results of taking the drugs and have consenting to those things when buying the drugs. The drug dealer is only selling a product to people who want it and usually seek the drug dealer out for that sole purpose. Obviously pushing drugs is wrong and selling drugs to anyone underage is also wrong, but what consenting adults choose to do to themselves should be entirely up to them. For anyone who says drugs fund worse crimes, they only do that BECAUSE they're illegal. That means the illegality is at fault for that, not the drug sales.

The "war on drugs" is a farce. The best way to combat drug abuse and addiction is to decriminalize. Portugal is a good example of how to approach drug addiction (as a health problem instead of a criminal justice problem) and has actually been used as a model in other places looking to change drug policy (such as Portland).

I'm of two minds about this one. Manufactured drugs should not exist (like cocaine, meth, etc.) but why are things that exist in nature being outlawed? They typically have far fewer and/or less serious long term effects, tend to not be anywhere near as addictive, and a lot of them are actually very helpful in certain dosages.

Driving is not a right. It is a privilege. You should absolutely be morally responsible enough to prove that you can still do so without turning other people into corpses. In fact, I think it's too easy to get your license renewed. You should have to prove, every time your license expires, that you can still drive safely.
