According to a national study on lost pets conducted by the ASPCA, 15% had lost a dog or a cat in the past five years. Only 74% of missing cats were finally found, but of that percentage, the vast majority (95%) returned home on their own. And that makes the search for a missing cat even more complicated.

So, imagine, after all the years go by and there’s barely any glimmer of hope left to ever hold your beloved furry friend again, you experience something that’s best described as a miracle.

Bored Panda compiled this list full of the most heart-melting moments of lost cats reuniting with their owners. Sometimes, it’s what feels like the longest year of their lives, other times it takes half a decade, and on rare occasions, owners lose count of years gone without their cat altogether. But I choose to believe in happy endings no matter how long you have to wait.

Man Gets Reunited With His 19-Year-Old Cat 7 Years After He Went Missing

Man Gets Reunited With His 19-Year-Old Cat 7 Years After He Went Missing

The adorable cat went missing years ago, right before Robert was planning on moving from California to Ohio. The devastated owner decided to ditch his plans and stayed in California for the whole year looking for his missing pal.
“I remember at one point I was praying and I said, ‘God, I’ll do anything, just bring my Chebon back,’” Robert said in a video posted on the Ventura County Animal Services. The cat seemed to have disappeared forever and Robert had no other choice than to move on.
Then 7 years later, a woman spotted a cat who looked ill, so she decided to catch the animal and take him to the vet. Luckily, the cat she found had a microchip, and in an instant, they knew who is the owner of the 19-year-old cat who had been living in the streets for years. That’s when Robert received a call saying that his cat was alive.
After finally seeing the cat, Robert immediately recognized his buddy and burst into tears. After all these years, the two friends were back together. The touching moment was captured by the animal shelter and instantly went viral, leaving so many people in tears.

Elderly Cat Finds Its Way Home After 13 Years

Her heartbroken owner, Janet Adamowicz, searched high and low for a year before finally giving up. But then, 13 years later, she got a call out of the blue from a vet 40 miles away.
“I thought it was weird, but I couldn’t believe it when I got to the vets and they had her there and she still remembered me”
“I don’t know where she had been, I think possibly a stray but kept being fed by strangers or catching her own food”

Bored Panda reached out to Kim Freeman, a lost cat search and rescue specialist who runs Lost Cat Finder agency. Kim said that as a professional lost cat finder, she suspects the numbers for cats gone missing are under-reported.

“Not only do cat owners rarely report the incident (if the cat is not chipped), many owners simply assume the worst and do not perform a valid search,” she explained.

The cat finder also said that cats are way harder to find than dogs. “Dogs run out in the open where people see them and worry, while cats hide, and even if seen, no one thinks twice about a cat out and about.”

“Complicating matters ever further,” Kim continued, “when people do notice a new cat, they usually assume the cat is either dumped, abandoned, or stray (as opposed to the very likely category of lost).”

When I worked at a cat shelter we used to have a booth at a local shopping mall. One day a man walked by and said "that is my cat, she went missing a year ago". He went back to his office and came back with photos and said "turn her over, she has white spots on the underside of her paws" Well, I handed the man his cat - no charge. This was before microchipping.

That's awesome . Not everyone uses their common sense these days

Even though the estimates of lost dogs and cats are quite hard to pin down, the ASPCA made an effort back in 2012 to conduct a first-of-its-kind survey of 1,015 households on missing pets.

The vice president of shelter research and development for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Dr. Emily Weiss, said there were several surprises from the study. “I think we have made an assumption about the stray pets in shelters—assuming that those animals are lost pets with owners that are actively seeking them.”

Four Years Ago My Beloved Cat Moose Went Missing. Yesterday, A Kind Family Who Had Been Feeding Him Recently Finally Took Him To Check For A Microchip

"The family who contacted had only been feeding him for a week or two. Not sure what his four years prior to that looked like but he was found pretty far from where he was lost so I assume that he moved with a family at some point and then either escaped or was left or what have you. Also he's much fatter than when I knew him so I have to believe he was a house cat "

After 54 years of keeping every cat we had as an indoor only cat, I can assure you that just being fatter is no indication of being or not being a "house cat". Over feeding, a lazy life style, yes. But not living indoofs.

However, the findings revealed a different kind of picture. “While some of those dogs and cats are in fact lost, many of them are likely to be dogs and cats that are truly homeless.”

Dr. Weiss urges pet owners to microchip their furry companions and add identification tags with easy-to-read information. “We suggest that the tag should have the cell phone number of the pet parent, the cell number of an emergency contact, the land line of the pet parent, and, if the person is comfortable doing so, the street address of their home,” she says.

If your pet has gone missing, have a clear picture of it ready to give to the officials, and make sure you search all the surrounding neighborhoods and animal shelters. These days, when social media is so active, it’s always a good idea to launch your search there.

As much as I wanted T shirt back, the guy and the cat have been together for so long so I agreed with his request to let him own the cat... with visits allowed lol. My Cat That's Been Missing For 1.5 Years Has Been Found! Welcome Home Princess

I'm assuming she got catnapped because she was found today one hour drive from where she was taken. A vet scanned her microchip and called my cell. A nice lady that only had her for 10 days took her to the vet and got her all cleaned up and free of fleas. I got the lady's number and she let me have my pet back with no issues.

She probably got “roadtripped”—-climbed into a car either for warmth or to escape an animal chasing her, then the owner of the car got in and drove away with her still inside. I have had this happen to one of my cats, named Melvin, back when I was a child. He found his way back home a few weeks later.

What an upbeat ending to what is often a painful hole in an owners heart! I love seeing this happy, sweet cat & her person reunited! I also had a beloved cat disappear 10 years ago, & I still look & call out for him. After an intense, year & a half long search of four shelters, in three cities, ever other day, then later, repeated calls to them just to check “in case”. The last 6 mo’s, we’ve had a scruffy, stray looking cat coming in through an upstairs window, & eating our cats food. Our lost boy was a sleek, shiny all black cat, but this one’s a scruffy, dull black cat with orange bands on his black coat. After reading this article, I’m wondering if this could possibly be my “Captain” who’s actually come home at last? Time, poor diet, stress (and other factors) can really change a cats coat & overall appearance. Thanks to everyone who’s posted their awesome stories, I hope to have a happy update soon!

Lost Cat Returned Home - Eastern Suburbs

"A bit over 5 years ago my wife and I moved house, about a 7 minute drive from the old place. A little over a month after that, one of our 2 cats (my cat, Artimus, the first pet I had ever gotten myself) got out, and didn't return home. I went out looking, called the local vets and the shelters, spoke to the neighbours at the old house, and waited for a phone call which didn't come. I checked back in every week for a while, but no luck.
Then at the start of December, just before my birthday, I get a phone call from Animal Aid.
    "We have your cat."
It was the best birthday present I could have received."

"Its horrible when they first go missing. No news is good news though. It's weird to see him doing things in the house that he used to do two years ago. He also used the litter tray in same old spot first time."

Wow 8 years. I would think that the cat would remember where home is and try to find their way back.

It really makes me wonder if they even care where they live. This is not a new story. If they can live on their own, they do. No one seems to ask animal communicators what their stories are. I worked with a guy who had a cat for several months a year. Then the cat would disappear. Once he came back neutered which really puzzled him. He moved; originally was concerned about the cat, but decided to not worry about it. I haven't spoke with him recently.

Nguhi Got A Kitty When She Was 9-Years-Old. They Lived Together Until 5 Years Ago When Panther Just Disappeared

It turns out that after he ran away, Panther was taken to a shelter in a city 15 miles away. Whilst there, a woman adopted and kept him for a few years before giving him to her parents. As luck would have it, the woman’s parents also turned out to be the next door neighbors of Nguhi’s parents.

People weren't as well educated about this. It's been outlawed as well now in many states.

Panther ran away from you because you tortured him/her by declawing him/her

you can be thankful, that he was taken to a shelter and got adopted, because without claws, he wouldn't have made it far as a stray cat. You idiot!

You don't deserve any pets if you mutilate them. I hate you and I don't even know you.

Many people do Not at realize that to de- claw a cat Means removing the tips of the finger at the first knuckle. Look at your hand folks and tell me what you think. Would you want your fingers cut off at the first knuckle yuk hell no. Don't do it it is very cruel and causes pain problem Plus they can no longer defend themselves if they every get outside.

28 countries in the world have made declawing a cat illegal and it is one of the most inhumane things you can do to an animal

Never ever declaw a cat! That is the most painful procedure ever. Mt daughter is a vet tech, and she literally can't stand it when they have to be declawed. A lot of vets will not do it, and only as a last resort.

If you want a declawed cat, get dog instead. People who declaw cats deserve a special kind of hell.
