70s fashion was a turning point in the whole history of trends. With new materials, sewing techniques, and inspirations available, the 70s gave us space dresses, vinyl jumpsuits, various hallucination-inducing patterns, and double denim in men's fashion. Another thing that the decade gave us is short shorts that were often sported not by long-legged ladies but by men.
The men's shorts trend might've had to do with the whole free love vibe of the 70s when strolling around half-naked wasn't so shocking. But, of course, aesthetics is a whole another question, as the hairy legs and a casual butt cheek peek-a-boo from your gym shorts might not seem as pleasing today.
Below, we have compiled the most outrageous examples of this men's fashion trend. In it, you'll find everything from dodgy denim numbers and terribly tight tear-offs to suspiciously skimpy sports shorts for men and lady-killing khaki cut-offs. Oh, and bloke bulges. Actually my urologist told me that this is an old wives tale: that wearing tight pants will somehow make a guy sterile. He told me to actually wear something tight, like a good jock strap and bikini briefs as a part of a treatment for a testicle infection I had to reduce the pain and aid healing. It worked, along with the anti-biotic he prescribed.

I honestly don't see why anyone has a problem with it! As a girl, I love short shorts (not the one short enough to show your bum from personal preference) - they feel so freeing and comfortable when its hot out. It is just legs after all! Short shorts for everyone is a win win!

While not everything needs (or should) come back, I really enjoyed seeing all those guys barefoot. It just made those pictures seem like everything is all-right with the world and lent a relaxed atmosphere. Though the Adidas-shorts should have never seen the light of day

The 70s and early 80s were very "sexy" times. The clothes were tight and form fitting. They complimented the fitness trend. After that America got larger and wider...baggy jeans, board shorts, XL t shirts. It's time for a happy, healthy medium IMO.

I really don't get what people find wrong with these shorts. I mean, they are better than what they call bermudas nowadays. Men now always look like they have a 5 pounds s**t in their pants, and half the time you have to look in the air or on the ground if you don't want to see their ugly underpants (when they even wear underpants...).

People forget that men didn't wear shorts in public in the '70s as much as they do now, and when they did it was usually some sports-related or very casual occasion. Anyway, posterity certainly will have something to say about the droopy nylon gym drawers that the boys wear everywhere today.

Look at it this way: nearly all these people are engaged in some casual or sporting activity; it's not like they went to work dressed like that (except those cops who do look pretty comical). Most of them also are in reasonably good shape; people exercised in the '70s, and there wasn't the obesity epidemic there is today. Besides, what do you think posterity will say about your baggy nylon gym drawers and hoodies? What's really noteworthy about the era is not the shorts but the hair.

Men use to wear these shorts back in the early 80s and it didnt seem to bother a soul. Older men...younger men....dads, uncles ....etc all wore these shorts. Today, in the present God forbid you wear these shorts because people will ridicule you. Who decided that these shorts are now "Gay" and "Innappropiate " ..Women wear their skimpy outfits leaving zero room for your imagination and the world is fine...but oh no, if a man is seen with these shorts shorts, the world laughs , and mocks him. Many of these are swim suits, not shorts. Take those out and then there are three categories - gym shorts, jean cut offs (most popular in the 70s) and dress shorts (actual fewest amount of pictures here). I was a teen in the 70's and once we had holes worn in the knees of our jeans we would take scissors and turn them into shorts. Girls tended to cut them higher than the guys did.

I think they're great! I hate the baggie down below the knees c**p that men and boys where now. At least make them shorts not cropped pants or pedal pushers. By the way , that first photo looks like John Kennedy, Jr. he's really cute and the shorts are wonderful normal shorts!!

I am puzzled that men nowadays are wearing "shorts" that are more like easily-carried tents, hiding everything from the gut to below the knees. Are present-day men ashamed of their bodies? Are they afraid that showing their bodies might make them gay (or straight!)? Or is there some other pestilence or social condemnation that forces them to hide? In any case, it seems that men have just as many body-issues as women, judging by these "shorts". And I note that the writer did NOT comment on the obvious, that women in the photos wore shorts that were just as short, and, often, did not worry about being braless - and that this did not seem to be a problem for the morality police.

What do I think? I think Americans have a problem with sex and sexuality and masculinity. Especially men, who forever live in terror that someone will think they're gay. These look no more ridiculous than shorts that go all the way down to the middle of a guy's calf. It's almost like they're wearing women's peddle-pushers. I think Americans like their men hunky and masculine and exposed but when actually confronted with it pretend to be disgusted or outraged or amused because that's what's expected of them. We are a weird mix of sexy and prudish and I don't get it. Bring on the shorts and the open shirts and the men. Go ahead and stare, I don't care.

The story - part 2... I went in and tried put on that tiny bathing suit... it was skimpier than a pair of tighty whitey's. I came out of the changing room feeling more than a bit sheephish but she looked me up and down, unashamedly, and smiled. She moved closer, kissed me gently on the lips, and whispered "you are beautiful". I was blown away. I returned to the changing room and the modesty provided by my board shorts. When I came out, she was gone. I looked around for her and the cashier called me over. She said "The young lady paid for the trunks and offers them to you, with her compliments". I threw caution to the wind and wore those trunks for the remainder of my vacation. For the first time in my life, I had no body-image hangups. It was incredibly freeing. I hope to recapture that feeling again some day. Cheers!

The whole "board shorts" fad is what is silly. True story - I was in Rio, laying on the beach. An incredibly attractive woman was walking the beach in a bikini. She stopped by me, put her glasses on top of her head and asked me "You're American?" I replied that I was. She then asked "So tell me, why is it that American men insist on covering themselves with such ridiculously oversized shorts?" I said "I don't know, it's what's in style now, and I guess we pay too much attention to what other people think." She held out her hand and said "Come with me." I was not ABOUT to argue. She took my hand and led me across the street to one of the ever-present bathing suit stores (more frequent there than starbucks is here). She found a speedo that she said "matched my eyes" and asked me to go try it on. I said "If I put that on, I'm going to look like a 10 lb sausage in a 5 lb wrapper." She insisted. "Please try it on, for me.."

All I can say is that when you take shorts that go below the knee and pair it with a t-shirt that could be worn as a dress, it is not a flattering look. It only accentuates that the wearer is overweight. Something all too common these days.

Clearly the writer of this article has an issue with men in shorts. First of all, the 70's did not take shorts to "a new level". It may be new to her (she's revealing her young age), but actually it's more like "the old standard". Shorts are "shorts" because they're short. Khaki cargo shorts that hang down to the knee or longer are not, yet it's been the standard American uniform for every male for the past 25 years. Male legs are sexy, and to show them off is not "feminine" as younger society may accuse. Popular street fashion needs to break out of the same boring mold it's been stuck in, and give the guys a refreshing break. Bring back the TRUE shorts!!!

I always find it interesting how popular fashion trends are like a pendulum. They go out of style for years only to re-emerge. For example rompers and jumpsuits are very much back in style now. Only time will tell if these booty shorts for men will come back into style.

I think that they are better than the ladies' bloomers and kids knickers that are worn today. They are also ecologically correct, requiring less air conditioning.

I am puzzled that men nowadays are wearing "shorts" that are more like easily-carried tents, hiding everything from the gut to below the knees. Are present-day men ashamed of their bodies? Are they afraid that showing their bodies might make them gay (or straight!)? Or is there some other pestilence or social condemnation that forces them to hide? In any case, it seems that men have just as many body-issues as women, judging by these "shorts". And I note that the writer did NOT comment on the obvious, that women in the photos wore shorts that were just as short, and, often, did not worry about being braless - and that this did not seem to be a problem for the morality police.

Only when you are very very skinny and very very young do short shorts work. Doesn't last, but comfortable while.

Compared to the shorts that females wear today these men's shorts are so tame. Goodness knows how parents allow their daughters out in public dressed as whores.

No sure what you're on about ? Most of them are just normal length some are to short and gay looking but the pic's look normal length to me how long do you want shorts down to shin ? They are shorts after all and what is the right length then

What do I think? I think Americans have a problem with sex and sexuality and masculinity. Especially men, who forever live in terror that someone will think they're gay. These look no more ridiculous than shorts that go all the way down to the middle of a guy's calf. It's almost like they're wearing women's peddle-pushers. I think Americans like their men hunky and masculine and exposed but when actually confronted with it pretend to be disgusted or outraged or amused because that's what's expected of them. We are a weird mix of sexy and prudish and I don't get it. Bring on the shorts and the open shirts and the men. Go ahead and stare, I don't care.

What do I think? I think Americans are afraid of sex. I think Americans freak out at masculinity. I think American men in particular are terrified that someone might think they're gay. I think Americans like their men masculine and hunky and exposed but act like prudes when actually confronted with it. Bring on the shorts and the bulge and the open shirts: go ahead and stare, I don't care. Arnold looks great in them.

The story - part 2... I went in and tried put on that tiny bathing suit... it was skimpier than a pair of tighty whitey's. I came out of the changing room feeling more than a bit sheephish but she looked me up and down, unashamedly, and smiled. She moved closer, kissed me gently on the lips, and whispered "you are beautiful". I was blown away. I returned to the changing room and the modesty provided by my board shorts. When I came out, she was gone. I looked around for her and the cashier called me over. She said "The young lady paid for the trunks and offers them to you, with her compliments". I threw caution to the wind and wore those trunks for the remainder of my vacation. For the first time in my life, I had no body-image hangups. It was incredibly freeing. I hope to recapture that feeling again some day. Cheers!

The whole "board shorts" fad is what is silly. True story - I was in Rio, laying on the beach. An incredibly attractive woman was walking the beach in a bikini. She stopped by me, put her glasses on top of her head and asked me "You're American?" I replied that I was. She then asked "So tell me, why is it that American men insist on covering themselves with such ridiculously oversized shorts?" I said "I don't know, it's what's in style now, and I guess we pay too much attention to what other people think." She held out her hand and said "Come with me." I was not ABOUT to argue. She took my hand and led me across the street to one of the ever-present bathing suit stores (more frequent there than starbucks is here). She found a speedo that she said "matched my eyes" and asked me to go try it on. I said "If I put that on, I'm going to look like a 10 lb sausage in a 5 lb wrapper." She insisted. "Please try it on, for me.."

I don't see anything wrong with most of them. Tons of men wore cut off jeans and the short work out shirts were perfectly fine for exercising in.

All I can say is that when you take shorts that go below the knee and pair it with a t-shirt that could be worn as a dress, it is not a flattering look. It only accentuates that the wearer is overweight. Something all too common these days.

Clearly the writer of this article has an issue with men in shorts. First of all, the 70's did not take shorts to "a new level". It may be new to her (she's revealing her young age), but actually it's more like "the old standard". Shorts are "shorts" because they're short. Khaki cargo shorts that hang down to the knee or longer are not, yet it's been the standard American uniform for every male for the past 25 years. Male legs are sexy, and to show them off is not "feminine" as younger society may accuse. Popular street fashion needs to break out of the same boring mold it's been stuck in, and give the guys a refreshing break. Bring back the TRUE shorts!!!

I always find it interesting how popular fashion trends are like a pendulum. They go out of style for years only to re-emerge. For example rompers and jumpsuits are very much back in style now. Only time will tell if these booty shorts for men will come back into style.
