What happens after we say cheese? The subjects of the following photographs probably didn’t predict the answer to be a morbid plot twist. We have all seen post-tragedy photos of terrible accidents. Yet, there is something particularly ominous and haunting about photos taken before disaster.

Think smiling families, groups embarking on explorations, and daring stunt attempts, not in the least expecting to be caught in a natural disaster or a horrific plane crash. Some of these pictures appear so unassuming and cheerful that it makes what followed all the more horror story-like.

William Shakespeare famously said, “Men at some times are masters of their fate,” but as you will see in the following photos taken before disaster, this is not always the case. Scroll down below with caution to see the Bored Panda round-up of some of the most creepy images that precede unfortunate events.

Mount St. Helen Eruption

Mount St. Helen Eruption

On May 18, 1980, Robert Landsberg, a freelance photographer, was just four miles away from Mount St. Helen. He had spent some time in the vicinity, exploring the beautiful vistas prior to the fatal event. This photo, showing the wall of ash that formed after the eruption, was the last one he took. Landsberg managed to hide the film with the photos before disaster struck on it under his body, leaving this as a piece of documentation of the events.

A launched that was rushed over the objections of NASA engineers to create a 'media op' for the President. Reagan was completely unaware of his inadvertent role, it was his vile underlings that applied the pressure, threatening NASA's budget if the launch was postponed. There's blood on their hands but they got off Scot-free.

To Jace. Due to winter weather, school was cancelled that day. I remember very well the day after day excuses for postponing the launch. A big rumor was having to delay any more they would miss the launch window for months. And further space travel funding would be cut. It was also the age of the recession and cutting funding for any "failing" National programs. And yes, by means of creative editting, the middle man between NASA and the President left out some very important details that hadn't been a problem before, and they took a chance their luck would hold out. (Cited from mutiple investigative reports, and being 14 at the time.)

I was pre-k age when this tragedy happened, but I have a very vivid memory of being next to my mom "helping" wash dishes with my dad and his friend sitting at the kitchen table talking about this. Obviously my young mind didn't grasp exactly what happened, but instead interpreted their conversation as a teacher (Christa McAuiffe, a school teacher, was the only civilian aboard) was taken by aliens. I recounted this memory years later with my mom and she exactly confirmed this conversation and scenario. For years I didn't realize it was this particular incident I was recalling. Its my "where were you when Kennedy was shot" moment in my life.

Ron Mcnair (afroamerican astronaut) was supposed to play the sax on Jean-Michel Jarres Houston concert in 85. It was a concert in celebration of NASAs 25 jubelee. Ron was going to play the sax on board the Challenger in space and then broadcast it by live feed directly to the concert. Sadly they never got that far and Jarre even thought about cancelling the concert. However, they choose to do it in honor of the astronauts in stead.

That was my teachers best friend growing up in college! We are over here in Portland Oregon and my mom in the schools when I was in kindergarten and he watch me through before school during lunch and after school cuz I was in kindergarten during hours that there is no school for me. I remember it was either right after breakfast or lunch that I came in and he was just wailing and fell at his desk! I asked him what was wrong and he said his best friend died being hero! That she was a beautiful strong woman and a teacher that we should all look up to! I remember he left to go to the bathroom for 5 to 10 minutes and the kids started coming in and they were being loud so I told them to be super quiet because he was super upset and they needed to sit down and be good kids cuz he was really upset even crying but I told him I wasn't going to tell him what was wrong because if he needed to tell them he would cuz he was an adult! When he came in he did tell us what was wrong! It's devastating😪

The female teacher was one of my teachers best friends in college growing up I was in kindergarten when it happened and he was a third grade teacher when it all went down!! My mom worked at the school and he would take me into his classroom way back when in those days when the teachers kids cut literally be watched by other teachers before and after school if they were younger depending on how old I remember being in preschool several times but I remember that day in particular Kim just finding out and wailing!! Because we're over here in Oregon but I think it was in the morning? Or at lunch time cuz I had just eaten and I come in a classroom and found him just so distraught! I remember hugging him and asking him to see if he was okay!? He told me his friend had died and that he was very very sad because she died being a hero! He told the rest of the class when they came in just moments later! It was truly devastating! I still have a book on it!🥺😪

it's incredible how he was actually killed. An assassin had tried to throw a bomb under their passing car, but it missed and exploded the car behind, the assassin then took his cyanide pill, but it was faulty and just caused him to throw up (a lot) so he panicked and threw himself in the river, but it had been a long hot summer, so the river was shallow... Ferdinand then was rushed away but later wanted to go and see the survivors or the earlier bomb, it was when he was on his way there that he was shot.

    James Dean Before His Crash

James Dean getting gas for his Porsche 550 Spyder

James Dean, a Hollywood actor, is pictured here filling up the tank of his Porsche 550 Spyder not long before he crashed it and died on September 30, 1955. Although the car was totaled, the salvageable parts were sold, only to cause several accidents later on. This spurred the myth that the car was actually cursed.

The car was totaled when he crashed - there's no way it was "involved" in later accidents.

    The Concorde Crash

    Picture of Concorde Crash

On July 25, 2000, Air France flight 4590, a Concorde passenger jet bound for New York from Paris, crashed shortly after its takeoff. The plane’s engines caught on fire, and the crash took the lives of 113 people in total. Although it was the only fatal accident in 27 years of Concordes being operated, they were all grounded after the crash, soon to be retired and never to fly again altogether.

    Diana, Princess Of Wales

Diana Princess Of Wales before the fatal crash

One of the last photos of Diana, Princess of Wales, was taken by paparazzi chasing her car on the fatal night of the crash that took her and Dodi Al Fayed’s lives. She’s seen in the back of the car with her head turned. In front on the left is her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, and on the right, the driver Henri Paul (who was later found to be driving drunk). This is one of the photos taken before the disaster on the night of August 31, 1997, just before the fatal crash.

    Joseph Avery’s Niagara River Crash

Picture of Joseph Avery crashing his boat in the Niagara river

The reason why this photo is so blurry is because it was taken on July 18, 1853. In the image, you can see Joseph Avery, the sole survivor of a boat crash that killed two other passengers, clinging to a rock to be saved. He stayed this way for 18 hours, and when the rescue boat came, it capsized just as he boarded it, ultimately ending Avery’s life. It’s probably one of the oldest photos taken before disaster.
