Sometimes parents want to be 'relatable' and 'cool', so they use meme references and words like 'lit' but these things don't cut it. All these desperate attempts do is just embarrass their kids. However, if they try something really ridiculous, it brings them even more shame. They end up on the subreddit /r/InsaneParents.

The online community describes itself as "a weird place where you can post those crazy parents who post in those woo-woo anti-vax groups on Facebook and do things harmful (directly and indirectly) to their children. We want to be a place where people can come and both get support and laugh. So this sub is a mixture of both the heartbreaking and the hilarious. Come and join us. Especially if you have your own stories to tell or your own social media content to post." Below you will find some of their most popular posts.

Bored Panda has already published two posts about the subreddit (here and here) but it looks like there's no shortage of insane moms and dads; people keep posting more and more parenting horror stories. Even though the subreddit was created relatively recently, in 2017, it already unites over 1.2 million members, with thousands online at any given moment.

It's normal for parents and their kids to have different views and opinions. In fact, they can be used for growth, too. Vicki Broadbent, founder of Honest Mum and author of Mumboss, is one of those parents who are open to learning from their children as much as they want to teach them. "They've taught me a lot from feeling more confident when I've been trolled online, to how to create a TikTok video!" she told Bored Panda. "My kids aged 10 and 8 respectively are both creative, empathetic, resilient, and strong-willed little humans. We base our relationships on open conversations and trust. I think the art of listening has been lost somewhat, and rather than being didactic as a parent, we need to practice listening more (and really hearing) to others' points of view, before sharing our own views.

Broadbent acknowledges that parents have the responsibility to inform, protect, and guide their kids, however, she thinks that children who feel endlessly chastised and forced to conform will do the complete opposite. "You have more chance of persuading your children to do the right thing if you are calm in the way you present your opinions."

"Encouraging children to talk to you honestly without judgement means they will always come to you when they're in trouble. It's also healthy they learn that no one will ever always agree with one another. Another lost art is that of debating!"

When Rebekah Tayebi, a clinical therapist and family coach, looks at toxic family systems, one thing that becomes really evident to her is seeing that the children are more attuned to the needs of the parents. That means, the typical parent-child relationship is inverted and there's confusion about what appropriate boundaries should be in place.

"The hard part for children in these environments is that which is like so many of us, is that we might start to mirror the dysfunction that we're seeing," Tayebi said. That's the reason why it's so important to start to catch negative patterns in the moment and try to eradicate them.

"Parenting is hard, there's no manual, we're all simply trying to navigate our children through choppy waters and this ever challenging life to be kind and strong," Broadbent concluded. "We also want them to have fun. Childhood is precious. I also think showing my own children my own vulnerabilities has encouraged greater empathy in them and they've understood early on that I'm a real human being not a womb on legs."

What some parents apparently forget is that they need their kids just as much as their little ones need them. When Broadbent had a big operation on her thyroid, for example, she was amazed to find just how much her children can support her during a difficult time.

I don't know, maybe some of the parent-child relationships we see on r/InsaneParents are beyond saving. But I hope they can at least act as a reminder for the rest of us to cherish ours.

Well now you know100% it's not the vaccines that causes Autism so you can't use that as an excuse, go and get him vaccinated NOW. FYI Autism is often genetic and the average age you start seeing symptoms is usually between 18months to 3 years.

It makes me so disappointed in the human race when I see moms that are sobbing over the fact that their child is on the spectrum. I totally get it if they’re worried the child will have difficulties living, but it’s literally YOUR CHILD! Love them for who they were made to be!! I’ve been surrounded by people at my school and in my family who are on the spectrum, and they can be the sweetest people in the world. I remember my 5th grade teacher was crying in class because she found out her son was on the spectrum. SHE unlike other moms was crying because she was afraid that his conditions would effect his life. She absolutely loves her son and is happy to be a mother of a kid on the spectrum. Also, vaccinate your kids.

Believe it or not, I know the family of one of the kids from Wakefield's original study. The child (now an adult, of course) is not autistic, but he does have what appears to be severe brain damage. He developed a very high fever following a vaccination and was never the same again. I am pro-vaccination, but it's true that a small (very small) number of children have an adverse reaction to vaccinations that can cause lasting damage. I can sort of understand the psychology behind being scared to vaccinate your child. You have a choice between two outcomes that both *feel* very unlikely, but one requires you to take action that could harm your child (even if it's such a tiny risk) and the other requires that you do nothing... I'm not advocating for parents not to vaccinate, I'm really not, but having grown up around a lot of the original anti-vaxxers (my own mother included) I have some empathy for their perspective. Having said all that - vaccinate your kids, people.

Karin Jansen
Community Member

I love your reply. By calling anti-vaxxers crazy and not taking them seriously at all we're evoking an adverse reaction were anti-vaxxers feel as though they need to defend themselves and prove they're right. Sending them further down the misinformation rabbithole. It is so much more effective to take them seriously! Yes, there are risks, and yes, in the off chance something goes wrong you will wish you hadn't gotten your child vaccinated. But the risks are so incredibly minor, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice. And the chances of catching - for example - the measles when you don't vaccinate and dying from that disease are infinitely higher.

BECAUSE AUTISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH VACCINES. I have an autistic son. He was autistic BEFORE the vaccines and the vaccines did not increase it - they just prevented him from dying from a preventable disease that kills. (Multiple preventable diseases actually). Now cut out sugars and processed foods that gunk up the brain and he'll function better. Also, autism is kinda like having your fight or flight on full tilt 100% of the time so be patient, calm and kind ALWAYS. Helps a bunch. Good luck.

Autism isn't a punishment, but it's more than just stimming.

This is no one's fault. It happens and you must deal with it.

Could it be that...he just has autism, genetically, all by himself? Crazy idea, but hey

Most likely because none of those things cause autism. As the parent of a now grown son with autism. He is a gift. You just haven't figured that out yet.

I'm sick of people talking about Autism as if it's a curse. Do you know how that makes my daughter feel? BTW, yes she's on the Spectrum, and I wouldn't want her to be any different from the amazing young woman she is.

I'm sick of people acting like the Thought Police. Why not let others have their own individual reactions and request support if they want it? Others may be concerned and upset by discovering their child is on the spectrum, even though you are quite familiar and comfortable with the idea. Also, ASD is a spectrum and every individual is different. Not every autist is happy in their lives. Do you know how the constant pretence that ASD makes you an amazing person and everyone will love you and you'll never be sorry you're autistic makes me feel? BTW yes, I'm on the spectrum, and no, it doesn't feel good. I'm glad you two are happy, but that's you. Let other people be.

Aside from her thinking not vaccinating is the ''right' thing and that having an autistic child is somehow a punishment, since when was it 'wrong' to have a caesarian and bottle feed?

How do you extrapolate this: "having an autistic child is somehow a punishment" from a mother being upset for her child? You are reading all sorts of things into this that the mother did not say. She didn't say it was 'wrong' to bottle feed or have a caesarian. Are you not aware that health care professionals make great efforts to help new mothers breast feed, and that natural birth has advantages over C-section for the baby? This mother is aware of these issues. Is that 'wrong' of her?

Autism is "caused" by the father and not "vaccines" or bad food, or voting the wrong way, or having painkillers at the birth or not breast feeding. Why don't you talk to your doctor instead of reading about it on the web.

Oh, so YOUR child didn't get vaccinated, but was still diagnosed with Autism? Hmmm ... I dunno, maybe a genetic fluke (LIKE MOST OTHER AUTISM CASES)? You freaking moron.

Genetic fluke? Are you serious? I'm going to be honest, you're also a moron.
