To make our lives easier and more comfortable, people have always come up with new inventions and most of them have been really useful, like cutlery or medicine to treat illnesses that were once incurable. But there are inventions that benefit humans less and may even be dangerous.
We all probably have looked at something, couldn’t understand the purpose of it and thought that it was unnecessary to invent it. Redditor numbnerve wanted to know what people think is the invention we would be better off without and over 22k people joined the discussion with some serious answers.
Don’t forget to upvote the redditors’ answers you agree with the most and if there is something you think belongs in this list and wasn't mentioned, leave it in the comments!

Beauty pageants for children.
Am I the only one that think these kids look absolutely hideous anyway? After all that ridiculous makeup is caked on they look more like Bride of Chucky than children.
I was a beauty pageant kid. It's a sick, sick world. Fake teeth, fake hair, fake tan, and self-esteem issues. I was a happy confident kid and then at ten started watching my weight because I thought I was chunky at 85 pounds. It hurt my relationship with my late mother and I don't talk to my dad anymore because he still sees nothing wrong with it. My mom eventually regretted it and made amends with me. Dad allowed my half sister to do it even after I ended up in therapy because of what I went through. It's about the prize money for him and a lot of the parents, not the kids.
Load More Replies...I happen to come across a tv channel showing this. I was aghast at how sexualized some of the contestants were. In the talent portion, there was this maybe 5 year old doing twirking and hip thrusts. What kind of parent allows for this?
I agree, this is child abuse, as it's a pedophile's dream.
Load More Replies...Agreed. But it feels somehow even worse for children - did they really get a choice? Is this all they know?

So called influncers, I'm probably too old to understand them but I certainly don't want my 1 year old to aspire to be one
But they have close to 1,000 followers and will get you SOOOOO Much business!
Load More Replies...They're this generations "consultants", being paid to give their opinions when you could come up with the decision on your own. New delivery method, same old BS.
We're all influencers; we just do it for a small audience without a camera and an account. All of my friends kids know my jokes, how being nice goes a long way, etc. :)
I understand where you are coming from, but way too many "influencers" are negative. Many promote vanity, and bad habits.
Load More Replies...It's an alien world to me, but the little I do know, they are beggars and want s**t for free, except they have nothing to offer in return.
Influencers have always been there. Only then they had to be famous beforehand.
Reality TV. I swear it glamorized the worst kind of behavior, and we ate it up.
Reality TV is as real as a cartoon flick. Absolutely nothing real about it.
Load More Replies...Okay this depends. Masterchef Australia is considered reality TV and it's a great show. There is no drama between contestants as they are super supportive of one another. The only drama is if they will finish the food on time.
I used to love the "single cook" educational shows. Once they got rid of those and started showing competitive stuff, I was gone.
Load More Replies...Not really reality tv when the whole show and concept is scripted, but some people actually think this crap is real!
Most of them aren't scripted. They're heavily manipulated and carefully controlled, but not scripted.
Load More Replies...Only the STOOPID ones! I know which ones they mean, but there are a TON of good ones and several GREAT ones! Some are WONDERFUL! Any show where the competitors help each other, and hug and cry over the one who has to leave like: The Great British Baking Show, The Great Canadian Baking Show, Making It, Next in Fashion. Also try Blown Away, Glow Up, The Big Flower Fight. Love The Voice, So You Think You Can Dance, America's Got Talent, The Masked Singer, World of Dance... And don't forget Mythbusters! Bill Nye, The Science Guy! Queer Eye! How to Look Good Naked, Top Gear... Also Good Eats! Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, You've Gotta Eat Here, Carnival Eats, The Chefs Line, Ugly Delicious... And then there are all the renovating shows! Good Bones, Boise Boys, Proprty Brothers, Home Town, Holmes on Homes... The animal shows! There are so many good ones out there!
I don't know all the proper terms but I think some of the shows on your list aren't quite what I think the OP is really referring to which is often called 'scripted reality' eg Love Island. The others are competition, property shows, cooking shows - more non-fiction, rather than reality TV which is a misnomer as it seems to be a strange depiction of what they think reality should be. If that makes any sense!!
Load More Replies...The thing about this is it's still on the air because ALL Y'ALL WATCH IT! Stop watching it and it will go away. Supply meets demand.
Any product that you pay for, and then have to pay a subscription to use.
Agreed. Anytime a Peleton commericial comes on the television, I think this.
My husband won a peloton and a free subscription for 3 yrs along w the shoes for everyone in the house. We used it for a year. It's basically a kind of nice stationary bike w an iPad attached to it. No one has used it in almost a year
Load More Replies...You can buy a spin bike for $2-300 and there are 1000s of free classes on YouTube.
Screw that I watch American dad on mine I got one with cupholders, and a tray you can adjust you can freaking eat at it, set up your tablet, a laptop what ever you want lol
Load More Replies...You pay for the device and a subscription for the service - technically two seperate things
Load More Replies...I agree sometimes you don’t even know you have a subscription. Laws in the UK are been changed to make subscriptions easier to spot and easier to cancel.
Last I checked, the YMCA also does this. You pay hundreds to be a member, then have to pay to used some/half of what they offer.
Seriously? That's what Peloton do? Wow? Talk about BS. Who would even buy this stuff?
Yes if I'm gonna pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for something I should just be able to use it end of story
Shark fin soup - Tens of millions of sharks are killed every year for their fins that offer little nutritional value and serve no purpose outside of being a status symbol
You can also add pretty much any 'traditional medicine" ingredients, like rhino horn, pangolin scales, etc. Demand for these placebos couched as 'traditional' are a big reason why many animals are trafficked and/or endangered.
And the rhino horn, pangolin scales, etc. is the same as your own nails and hair.
Load More Replies...WE can do without the people who eat shark fin soup. Let feed them to sharks and orcas. They won't be missed
I agree with the sentiment. Orcas don't eat people, though.
Load More Replies...Yes, they're not even killed, they have their fin removed alive, and then sent back into the ocean to suffer and almost certainly die.
Not "almost". They can't swim without their fin and if they can't swim, they die.
Load More Replies...I’d like to point out- without sharks we will die. Sharks eat fish/sea lions, fish eat algae- algae makes oxygen. Less sharks means more fish and less algae.
Maybe not,? I'm pretty sure humans will overfish and ruin that too. :(
Load More Replies...The rest of the shark is not "profitable" to sell, so they fill up the limited space of the ship with just the profitable fins. They cut off the shark's fin and then just dump them back into the sea, bleeding and unable to swim...

Load More Replies...Nothing wrong with the concept, but going overboard seems to be the problem....It's not THAT big of a deal.....

YouTube "endscreens" (or "endcards") that often block content at the end of the video you're watching.
If you're using the mobile app, you know how you can pull the video down while in portrait to get back to the YT home screen? If you begin pulling the video down but then pull it back to the top without taking your finger off the screen they will disappear and you can watch normally. I don't know any way to get rid of them on other devices though

I think this is good, I like the viewing suggestions, but I understand that it can be anoying to some people. Every feature that can be potentially annoying to some people, should be able to be turned off. Just like autoplay, auto-max-volume etc.
yes, thank ou, I'm not the only one. I chalk it up to bad editing & frustration
For Profit Prisons.
And the fact that they are allowed to lobby for heavier person sentences and get it is just a pure slap in the face of the very idea of freedom.
The fact that they're allowed to place quotas on capacity which the government must abide by or the government has to pay a fine is f'ing maddening. What bullshit is this where a business gets to dictate prisons.
Load More Replies...The USA shows the rest of the world every day that it is not a first world country.
Load More Replies...There's a prison in SK, Canada, where inmates work on a farm and raise their own food. I'm all for decreasing the cost to taxpayers, but the prisoners also have to earn (by good behaviour) the privelege of working in the gardens, it teaches them good skills and helps with rehabilitation. The incidence of violence are notably lower (gardening is very therapeutic.)
It is disutopian in the extreme that the organisations that are supposed to be rehabilitating offenders profit from them getting sent back to prison.
More guard abuse of prisoners, and more recidivism, as well as monetary penalties to the prison for not keeping all their beds/cells full. Which means that the incentive is to prosecute people on any charge to incarcerate. Police become indoctrinated by political pressure from higher ups to find any reason to put people in jail. Sometimes, made up reasons.
Load More Replies...For profit a lot of things are similar. Some tasks are just better left with a government, who do not have to make money on it. The encentive to earn money and provide a good service does not always lign up in neat manor, and hence if you optimise too much for one of them, it often introduces some mechanism that makes the other one suffer. Running a for profit organisation often becomes more a matter of appearing good than delivering a product that is good. This means that assigning a big part of your budget to advertising makes sense, whereas a governmental institution does not have to focus on attracting customers, and can spend those resources on providing the core service, e.g. healthcare.
Landmines. I'll tell you why: They render large tracts of land completely unusable They are expensive and difficult to remove safely because there is seldom documentation of where they are placed They are cheap, plentiful, easy to place, and deadly They kill/maim livestock and wild animals They kill/maim innocent people decades after conflicts have ended. Many times the victims are children because they can't read or don't understand warning signs
I am asking a dumb question - do we have any technology that can see metal in shallow plane of land from above? Is it just no one want to spend the time/money in these areas?
Land mines are designed to not be detectible by metal detectors, otherwise it would be too easy for the enemy to remove them. The most efficient method is to clear them with heavy equipment (flails, bulldozers, etc), but that requires significant capital investment, and isn't practical in all terrain.
Load More Replies...At the end of last year they cleared the last remaining landmine from the Falklands. They had been placed there in the war almost 40 years previously. One benefit though, some of the beaches were unusable for humans as we didn't know 'exactly' where they were but that they were around these areas and so you find the most spectacularly beautiful, untouched by humans for 4 decades, full of wildlife and penguins rearing their young.
The element I find most disturbing is that there are many people who spend their entire working lives endeavouring ways to kill more people more efficiently. For example, mines that will spring up to 3 feet and explode in a horizontal plane. Or the cluster bombs that will leave mines on damaged roads/runways so that the driver of the bulldozer will effectively target himself as he levels the ground. There are far too many other examines to list here, each more vile.
EVERYTHING can be turned into a weapon. EVERYTHING. Saying that we should ban all weapons [I mean who would disagree] means you are going to ban a LOT of tech, from wires to gasoline to salt. And, yes, I agree. But like a former POW told me, the point of war is to kill them so that they don't kill you.
Load More Replies...In El Salvador, during the civil war, the guerrilla set rudimentary "pipe bombs" made with PVC pipes, bolts, and powder on the plantations of rich families. This tactic caused the death and thousands of farmworkers' mutilations, which didn't have any alternative.
Unless they had pressure triggers not the same. People still put IEDs all over, but a land mine is worse as there is no one setting it off it just sits there for years or decades waiting for something to trigger it.
Load More Replies...- It is estimated that there are 110 million land mines in the ground right now. An equal amount is in stockpiles waiting to be planted or destroyed. - Mines cost between $3 and $30, but the cost of removing them is $300 to $1000. - The cost of removing all existing mines would be $50- to $100-billion. - According to the 'International Campaign to Ban Landmines network', more than 4,200 people, of whom 42% are children, have been falling victim to landmines annually in many of the countries affected by war or in post-conflict situations around the world. http://www.landminefree.org/2017/index.php/support/facts-about-landmines
Can we not use the politicians who order the armed forced to deploy them to clear them?
One line says they're expensive then the very next says they are cheap..?
"Smart" devices. No LG, i don't want to download an app to use my f*****g washing machine, i want to wash my clothes ffs
The last time I had to purchase a washer and dryer, the salesperson immediately escorted me to the computerized ones. I stopped him and said, "No. I want knobs, dials, and switches, please, not motherboards." He looked confused, whereupon I said, "If an analog part fails, I can replace it with another switch. I can't do that with a motherboard. No thanks."
I used to think the same, but certain devices do help with accessibility. I replaced my parents thermostat with a nest, because my dad was having trouble walking up the stairs to reach the old one. It ended up backfiring a bit. I took the time to download the app to devices and show them how to use it, but they would still text me to change it for them.
Load More Replies...I can't do laundry today because my wifi is down. That's something you never want to have to say.

The "smart device" industry is beginning to get a little irritating to lay the least
Yes I think the same what is the point of a smart kettle you still have to fill it and pour out the water to make your drink. You still need to put clothes in a washer and take them out.
Don't agree with this one. I love the fact that my washing machine tells me when it's done and my car sending me a message when it's charged.
Car I get, but uh i got a smart watch if I can't hear the washer/dryer ding, I set a timer, and I already own the watch, so why pay the extra cash? And its to they are on commision when you go shopping for these things and they hound its like no I don't need my phone linked to my washer, I got enough damn apps going off asking if I am hungry and want to order take out, wasting my damn battery, and enough spam calls I honestly don't even turn my phone ringer on or it on vibrate unless I am expecting a damn call.

Adblock detectors. Your site forces me to disable adblock? Ill just go to another site.
BP is sadly guilty of this. I originally installed an adblocker precisely because BP was serving up some very shady ads that opened hundreds of popups.
Same here. BP is the reason I installed Ad blocker. I kept getting a pop up from "google" saying I won and would automatically redirect me to another page.

if you add this custom rule to Adblock Plus, example: @@||boredpanda.com$elemhide it blocks the adblock detector for most sites
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, as much as we'd like it, websites aren't charities that are run at the expense of the creator. Even a small website can be expensive to produce, and large website can be VERY expensive with the server space, maintenance, updates, domain, etc... Which is what advertising pays for.
Yeah, either pay for a subscription to the website, or accept the ads. Otherwise you are demanding a free service, and that's not how capitalism works.

Devices meant to break after a short period of time, and devices that purposely have parts you can't replace.
Manufacturing products to have an intentionally shortened life span is quite common for most products. With electronics being mostly comprised of non-recyclable components; designed to be intentionally unrepairable, it's also creating a large strain on the environment.
I think the EU recently voted a law that forces manufacturers to repair broken devices and produce spare parts.
I had a brilliant Brother printed which I could no longer use because they changed the 'drivers'? So it became obsolete. I was so peed off 😤
Upgradable computer hardware joke. By the time you need to upgrade, the hardware config is obsolete (the bus, the cpu speed, the graphics, storage)
We need to add Repairable to the other 4 Rs. We should not be throwing out stuff because a motor in a sealed steel box needs new brushes or bearings.
This always makes me so sad. Its ridiculous that they force you to throw away items that can be repaired. I have now a laptop with a cracked screen (that soon will stop working). Its a bit old but it works really well. Sadly buying a new screen to fix it its so expensive that its not worth repairing it.
Seafloor trawling...
It destroys the habitant of fish just so we can squeeze every bit of a fish from an area...
I can't believe this hasn't been banned everywhere. Such unsustainability from damaging the ecosystem.
Even when banned they still do it. So much is destroyed for no reason than it was in the way
Load More Replies...The Chinese lied for years about the tonnage of fish they were "removing" from the ocean. So, forecasts by the UN and other organizations was that the oceans were not being "over fished" but the Chinese were lying. For two reasons, the fishermen had quotas they had to meet, which were impossible so they lied about how many fish they caught. And the Chinese government continued to the lies so that they could continue to over fish.
The most stupid thing is, it's the fishermen it harms when the stocks drop. Same with using nets with small holes that catch EVERYTHING, or catching loads and then dumping part of that catch because you went "over quota" rather than working on catching JUST your quota.
The problem is that as long as the competitors are doing it, there is little point in not doing it, or you will not stay competible. It quickly develops into a race for the bottom with a disarsterous result. The only cure is to either put in regulations or have mutual agreement of no one doing it. As long a just one does it, it ruins it for everyone while it benefits he who does it, and hence the others will soon join.
Load More Replies...I have NOTHING nice to say about these people. just watched a doc about fin fishing. we should start boycotting every country that allows this in any way. China and Japan being the top two. they cut the fins from living sharks and throw them alive back into the ocean to die. they use lines and hooks to catch them and some drown before they are pulled out of the water because they can't move. Watched a show by Green Peace, yeah I know about the controversy of their methods, but better someone try than not. the gov'ts are allowing this because the fish moguls pay them off. GRRRRRRRR hope they all die a horrible death
This should be criminal the destruction of the seas ecosystem is horrendous
Unskippable Ads
Especially irritating when I need to show an educational video in a classroom and have to waste time on ads plus its just not the place for them in the educational setting - where it might look like an endorsement.
Adblockers for browsers work quite well in these scenarios
Load More Replies...The people who advertise to us are already selling our data. Do they really need to interrupt our thoughts and emotions every few seconds too? It should be illegal.
... especially on youtube before the short videos. If I clicked on a 30 second Youtube video it is rediculous that you think it justifies showing me two mandatory 1 minute long videos. I am not prepared to use 4/5 of my spare time on optaining useless information. It is a waste of my time and your advetising time and budget. If I am not committed after 10 seconds I won't engage, so don't force me too. All you produce is a contempt for the product in the commercial instead.
Really? so it's a lie!!! They want to trick you to get premium! I wasn't going to get one but now I'm even more sure

I can accept unskippable ads if it's in content that I'm getting for free. Bills have to be paid somehow. I don't like them, but I get it.
Robocalls
The UK doesn't have so much trouble with these thanks to the Telephone Preference Service, which allows people to opt-out of sales calls. This works for legitimate companies, but unfortunately the scammers don't abide by the rules. I have a Raspberry Pi with a Fax Modem that monitors incoming calls on my landline and answers as a fax machine to unknown numbers or numbers I have blocked. Really we should be beyond this, but the telecommunications industry doesn't seem to want to fix it.
I'm in the UK and I get them all the time even though I set up TPS. I get at least two or three a week on both my landline and mobile.
Load More Replies...Collection agencies and scammers... spoof the number. Calls from LA, Phoenix, Detroit, right next door to you.... hell, you may just get a call from your own number! This should be illegal,
"Hello. We are calling to let you know that the warranty on your vehicle is about to expire..."
I get called (on my landline) frequently by 'people from Microsoft' and they always introduce themselves with a very English sounding name, eg John Williams or Mary Smith. They are all Indians and speak with an Indian accent lol.
The ones I hate are the robocalls that know how to leave a voicemail. Oddly enough, I don't believe that the warranty on my car has expired! Probably because my car hasn't had a warranty on it since about 15 years before I bought it!
I have caller ID on my land line. If it says "unavailable" I don't answer. I only answer for numbers I know. When I am reading and the phone rings and I don't know who it is, I hit the speaker button and don't say anything. It costs them if it is long distance. They never say anything, they just hang up.
Without speaking. Hit the answer button, then # key twice (##), hang up button. It signals older autodialers you have a non functioning number and you will get dropped from their list.
40+ hour work week
It was certainly better than its predecessor, the 70-hour workweek.
Yes and the 70 hour was better than slavery.... that's not the point here
Load More Replies...It sucks out your whole life, not even counting the commute, then home to clock in to your second job
Some people WANT a long week for the money, don't ban things for everyone because a handful of people are being forced into it.
Actually if 40 hours work week didnt invented we will be working more 🤣🤣
Damn, I wish I only needed to work 40 hours... Most of my adult life, I've worked 50-70+ hours just to pay the bills.
I worked 60+ hour weeks for almost a decade before the pandemic hit, and any time I see people pushing for fewer hours, I point out that unless they address the larger economic issues, it’s just going to be a perk for people above a certain income threshold. It’s telling that the progressive party in my country is tackling things like housing prices first.
Load More Replies...But to get rid of that, we (USA) need to increase pay. There is no way someone working for $7.25 an hour can live without a 40+ hour workweek, whether it be one job or two or three.
fun fact: school in Australia takes 6 hours, 5 days a week. Add to that ~1.5 hours of homework a day and that adds up to a work week of 37.5 hours. Maximum work week for an adult working is 38 hours. AND THEY ARE GETTING PAID TO DO IT.
The problem is in part customer expectations, we want instant responses, 24-7 availability etc...
Pesticides.
They’ve ruined the environment by killing off the pollinators. I swear, they will be the reason for more food shortages just as swiftly as climate change will affect us all.
Pesticides used properly have their place. Without pesticides food would be less abundant as crops would be eaten by insects. The goal is balance. Not enough pesticides to kill pollinators, just enough not to lose crops.
They always are, its already been disproven that pesticides were giving people cancer. Youd have to eat all the wheat in the field to get enough pesticide to kill you
Load More Replies...You have to be a bit more specific than just ‘pesticides’. Glyphosphate is very low impact compared to nicotinoids, and a lot less toxic than the copper sulphate organic farmers slather over their overpriced crops
Where I live you have to be licenced to use commercial farming pesticides. They are used sparingly to keep food costs down, not wholesale or recklessly as some would suggest. It's bad form to poison your neighbours. As well, government inspectors, farm loan boards, and insurance companies (both crop and farm ins) all weigh in requiring reports and testing. FYI Sprays are used to kill off bugs that destroy crops. They also stop molds and blights that will kill the plants or poison us. Talk to a farmer about why they do stuff. BTW, always wash all your produce even after covid. The planet is a giant compost heap.
No need for pesticides, herbicides, gmo’s insecticides, nitrogen etc etc etc, think it can not be done snd maximize profits? Watch the movie The Biggest Little Farm”
They went through a lot of crap to get to that point though.

Do you have a weird phone, or do you mean your ringtone is turned off, but your media volume is still up and you forgot??
YES!!!!!! I complained to the help staff and was told that they couldn't do anything about it. I informed them that if that was the case I would no longer visit their site. It was a game and if I cannot enjoy a game (because of noisy ads) then I would find other games without the noise and I did.
I will remove any app that does this. I'm looking at you Defender App.
This is annoying when your in a restaurant or on public transport
That is stupid. This why I have an adblocker. Too bad it act like the king of my computer.
Facebook messenger calls. You CAN'T stop them unless you delete messenger. can't turn off ring, can't opt out, can't block people...
Cookie pop-ups. How come we still don't have a more efficient way to manage our browsing privacy.
Some sites are better than others, but it is starting to get annoying, as when you decline cookies on a site, it can't set a cookie to say that you declined cookies, so it asks you every ruddy time you visit it! Not all cookies are evil and some are needed to make sites work, such as remembering preferences and logins, but tracking cookies can go and do one!
God, if I could upvote this 100 times!!! The internet has evolved so much since it's inception and has now been made a thoroughly unpleasant experience!!
In many countries this is required, so, a website makes it apply to all.
Though it is annoying I still think it is preferable to the privous state where the just loaded a lot of spying stuff onto your computer without even informing you about it happened. At least we now know that it happens and have gotten some kind of control over it. I in general decline as much as they will let me.
Some popup cookies are small and shows à the corner of the screen, they are not so annoyin, others like the one on the picture above are made by satan himself, I hate them too. But some countries law force sites to put this popup
Blame the EU for this and their stupid Data Protection Laws. I spent a whole year learning about this when it was brought in. Spent 6 months making sure we ready and compliant. I then found out that some government agencies are openly breaking the rules with a built in "get out" clause. If they use the term "Deemed necessary" they can just ignore the rules and pass data on without asking permission.
I’ve gone through a ton and haven’t seen this one. Slavery.

A friend in the trade told me 2 things that you can do. A crush test; crumple the fabric in your hand; if it returns to flat shape, no wrinkles, it's good. Look at the number of stiches per inch in the stitching, buy 8 per inch or better. Thanks Gordon
That has nothing to do with fast fashion. Cotton and linnen for example always wrinkle. But wearing clothes made of plastic (polyester, acrylic) wrinkle way less. (Yet they leave microplastics in the water every wash, so that doesn't sound like a better choice.)
Load More Replies...Old t-shirts get turned into a pyjamas tops for me. I don't like to buy anything if I think I might only wear it once. (Such as for a wedding, etc).
I wear 20yr old band shirts and camo shorts that are maybe just as old, glad I've never been a fashion victim.
Should be recycled. I burn old clothes, because I wear them until they are falling apart. I donate them if my body size changes.
I stopped buying fast fashion about 7 years ago. Cut my closet down by around 70%. I just buy far less clothing and buy good clothing when I need it. I use to love shopping but now I absolutely hate it. Completely changed my mindset. Mostly I buy thrifted stuff for my work clothing, then nice things for nights out or events. My clothes take up half a standard closet.
Auto play videos, especially in non video streaming websites. NOBODY asked for them, yet so much work is getting put into making it a web standard. Just f*****g stop
AGREED!!! Drives me crazy when a video just starts playing on a non video streaming site!
what are you talking about? I love it when a website that should be simple to load takes forever because the video is buffering and getting first dibs on through traffic from the website
Load More Replies...espically annoying are videos that pops up in a textpage, e.g. and article when it is placed in the middle of the text and only pops up once you scroll past it. I was in the middel of reading an article and do not care about your stupid video, which is currently scrolling the text i am interested in out of the screen. When you then scroll down to find the text while ignoring the videos the video "colapses" and moves the text back up, so I suddently is further down in the text that I entended. Then I scoll up to find the next section, video pops up again and presses text down etc. In this fashion you can hunt for a certain section witout being able to ever see it. Not only does your video waste my time but the way it is programmed makes the webpage practically useless.
CNN is horrible at this. Shut the f*ck up! Nobody asked for your autoplay.
I have a limited amount of bandwidth a month and it pisses me off to see that the wiki website I opened up to look up something for a game I was playing is also playing a livestream the whole time.
My 6yo daughter watching Baby Joy Joy on Youtube and suddenly an indian Pop artist appear, an entire videoclip, like 3 and a half minutes long... i mean, really?
single use plastics
Or plastics that have no plastic number for potenetial recycling, or it's hard to see.
Recycling is actually a myth for much of the USA. Most of it gets piled and never processed due to contaminates. Truth is STOP MAKING PLASTICS, and to companies... STOP BUYING PLASTIC PACKAGING FOR PRODUCTS.
Load More Replies...One aspect of this that I find dreadfully concerning is that we've become dependent on single-use plastics for sterility with frequently-used medical supplies, like pen needles for insulin, sterile packaging, shields for thermometers and other meters, and on and on. The sterile protective equipment being used includes plastic fibers. Plastic is absolutely everywhere in medicine, and most of it is unrecyclable.
And in reseach! It was staggering how much plastic was thrown away. Tissue culture flasks, petri dishes, centrifuge tubes, transfer pipets...
Load More Replies...In the EU tons of things are packaged in plastic, which you throw away after you have taken the product out. So its still single use plastic basically. So the ban is a nice little start, but just a drop in the ocean.
Load More Replies...Oh please....straws? really? How about fishing nets? Straws are literally one of the least problems here
i have plastic straws at home that i have been re- using for at least 3 yrs...i wash them all the time..also keep 1 in my purse....so i never need 1 at a fast food spot....if i do take 1, it goes home with me,to be reused over and over and......☺...i know, baby steps but i try not to use plastic.
Load More Replies...Our local fast food places have all switched to paper straws. It tastes a bit funny but it's better for the environment so we just have to suck it up.
YES. All single use items every where should be biodegradable. This should be international law.
Plastic straws can be washed and used over and over, even in a dishwasher.
Spot on!! We convinced our local restaurants to stop offering straws, and to stop using plastic containers for taa as ke out! They said it costs a bit more, personally I would rather give that restaurant an extra dollar then learn about the impacts that plastic had on the environment
Most single use plastics are medical tech - easy hygiene when you dont have to wash it. Straws (pictured) are for disabled people to easily drink, look it up.
Drug commercials. F**k me, your average joe, making drug recommendations TO MY DOCTOR - who spent 10+ years studying and working to be in the position.
Prepared to be corrected here, but I believe this is a uniquely US problem. The fact it crops up in so many "Weird things about the US as observed by the Rest of the World" lists would suggest we don't understand why you have them either.
I have actually seen it on Canadian tele as well when I went to visit. They have a very 'Little America' vibe. Not the goofy canucks most ppl think. When we hit up cities/towns outside of the large city like Toronto... The folks just as white and racist made rude comments about my husband who is of Asian descent.
Load More Replies...And don't you love the disclaimers: This may kill you but it will stop your feet from itching.
Especially when they don't even tell you what it's prescribed for, just "ask your doctor if it's for you." Like, ma'am, that drug is for prostate problems. Oh.
You were supposed to infer that from the salt-and-pepper haired men laughing and half-ass playing football.

Because when they trial it, if one person out of x thousand gets something, related or not, they have to list it.
Load More Replies...Prescription medicines aren't allowed to advertise in the UK, it's only the things that can be bought over the counter like Paracetamol that can. Also first stage baby formula isn't allowed to advertise.
Indeed, we would be prescribed because the doctor, who has no financial interest, would decide we need it, not because we have seen it on the telly haha.
Load More Replies...In Portugal we have medication commercials, but only for the over-the-counter stuff, not for the ones that actually need a doctor's prescription.
Listening to the side effects will keep me from ever asking about taking them. May cause death or worse
I especially enjoy the happy graphics (grandpa lifting toddler, people riding bikes) designed to distract you while they quickly list all the adverse reactions. I have actually heard, "Genital infections that could lead to death" and "permanent staining of the eyes."
Ads on streaming services that I F*****G pay for. You don’t need revenue, Hulu, that’s what my subscription is!
"Oh, but we offer a LIGHT subscription service with only HALF the ads! All for the low-low price of $15 a month!" I don't f*****g think so. If you get any money from me, I don't want to see ANY ads. Period.
Try buying a full price game, NBA 2K21 and seeing EA has put unskippable ads in it.
At first I thought they were saying Maggie Gyllenhaal shouldn't exist. To which I strongly protest because I think she's a delight.

Convenience fees on debit/credit card transactions.
Another one that would appear to be a uniquely American problem. In the UK (and I think all of Europe) you are not allowed to make an extra charge for paying by card.
Again, misleading. Credit card companies charge interchange fees in Europe. Some countries are high, some are lower. The merchant inevitably pases that cost on in the form of higher base prices. So basically, every customer covers the cost.
Load More Replies...It would be amazing if you could follow UPI. Amazing work at India, no need to carry cash/card, scan a QR code and pay :)
True! Especially paying taxi/auto drivers has become extremely easy.
Load More Replies...And membership fees for the cards themselves! (As if we're not already paying the fees through the percentage surcharge paid by retailers - wherever we use the cards - who then add that cost to the items we purchase.)
Fees on debit or credit cards, other than interest, are only for those with low credit scores. They call it a convenience fee because they gave a credit limit to someone who wouldn't typically get one with their credit history. The small monthly fee is to help boost their credit score because it shows that they make timely payments every month. Anyone with even lower than average credit scores don't typically receive a convenience fee. It's used to help the worst of the worst earn a credit history again.
Cigarettes
My Nana started smoking the night after grandad joined up
Load More Replies...This shouldn't be on the list, if YOU don't like cigarettes fair enough but if people want to smoke that's up to them.
I've been a smoker for 21 years and I really wish I'd never started. It's smelly, unhealthy and so bloody expensive. Please, if you don't already smoke, don't start.
I've been a smoker for 40 years and I still LOVE it. I enjoy every single cigarette I smoke, and it is my right to do so. If you really don't like it, I know you can stop - it's hard to admit that we like something so 'hated' in society today. :-)
Load More Replies...I'd add cigarettes whose packaging and advertising is directed to children. Makes sense, the adults are already hooked, so they market to the young uninitiated to get them addicted. Hey, isn't that the mantra of anti-drug messaging?
I've never seen any cigarette packaging aimed at children... this is more media BS to keep us arguing amongst ourselves and distracted from whatever the government doesn't want us looking into.

Pop up ads. Not only are they so annoying but can either scam or install malware on the devices of unsuspecting people
Fun Fact: The inventor of PopUps officially apologized for inventing them.
Yep. I had to deal with one that installed some… thing on my phone that caused it to be spammed with notifications on the calendar app, which said something like “your device is hacked” and I had to find out how to get rid of it.
..especially when they cannot be closed but people are abusing the convention that clicking the cross in the upper right corner closing the damn thing, but instead use the click to link to another page. I love my NoScript! I also have cookiebro, but i don't know if it also blocks advertising. Microtransactions
I agree. I can somewhat understand if there's some special cosmetic things you can only get by buying them with real money, as long as it's not the only way to gain nice cosmetic things in the game. In kids games there shouldn't be any microtransactions though, that's just so f*****g wrong.

Im gonna have to disagree with you here although some of them are pretty toxic (looking at you twitter, Ig, snap, and Facebook) apps like YouTube, discord, and reddit (and BP) have great communities. Especially with YouTube i feel like they dont cause all of these effects that you mentioned. I feel like one of the main reasons social media gets a bad rep is because there are a few people who are toxic and then they make the whole community look bad. I know from personal experience that this happens because one of the game communities im in got a bad rep for 1 guy being an idiot. (Sorry for a whole rant lmao)
I use all my social media only for s*itposting. No politics, no drama. It´s all your fault, your choice and your cookies
The Polygraph machine. Super innaccurate and I believe even the inventor curses its existance.
Always found it so strange the weight that seems to be put on polygraph tests in the USA, in both fiction and real life crime cases. Its so unreliable, but the results seem to have such a big impact on how suspects are viewed
Probably find it strange because it isn't true. Even in the US a polygraph is only admissable in civil cases and even then, in most states, both parties must agree.
Load More Replies...That is the question. If a suspect believe in it working, it may be used as a usefull tool, whereby you might apear to be able to "close the door" and force a confession out of him. If he thinks you can see through all his lies by this tool, he may give up upon the option of lying and instead choose to tell the truth. Don't underestimate the power of a good bluff.

It's more of a psychological weapon to get people to confess. He was in trouble because he was pulling this before people had called a lawyer.

This should be higher. Stuff's ubiquitous, even though where I live they're talking about banning it for fast-food containers, there are plenty of other uses that won't touch. And it breaks down into bits that float everywhere in the surf.

What was wrong with paper cups and straws? Why do we need foam or single use plastic.
Actually no. It's Styropor to some non-Americans ;-)
Load More Replies...It drives me crazy when you buy something, and it has massive pieces of styrofoam for the packing, that you now have to somehow get rid of. You can't recycle it. You're pretty much stuck breaking it into little pieces and trying to hide it in with the rest of the trash.
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
It's not like the corn industry would suffer if it stopped producing HFCS. Products made from corn are used in dozens of industries: corn starch, ethanol, flavonoids extracted from corn, corn oil, etc.

Twitter
Edit: Because Twitter is mainly a cesspool of hypocrisy and politics. I've honestly never seen so many "non descriminatory self appointed puritains" be so incredibly hateful due to someone not having the exact same opinion as them
The internet is full of hyper judgemental people, including here at BP, I try to blip over anything trashing another. Using words like hate or shaming, boomers, even people who prefer to correct others by pointing out mistakes, instead of adding to the conversation. Tribalism and over generalization help nobody
I have seen information that over 1/2 of the accounts on twitter are fake. I have never been on it, no need to be.
LED advertising They're too f*****g bright and now they're putting mini screens on trucks that drive around town and it pisses me off. There's already enough distraction on the road.
I miss the billboards that had the rotating panels. Those were cool
There are some in my city that are eye level with the road and are so bright it is so distracting at night!
Waste of electricity, ugly and distracting to road users, should be banned.
LED advertisement companies have lost lawsuits in The Netherlands and were forced to dim them when people complained.
Gonna put LED headlights in that category nothing like being blinded while you drive at night because some bumper riding asshole has no chill.
I was in Leeds (UK) yesterday and saw two guys walking around with screens on their shoulders advertising some thing and I’m like that’s messed up
Lead lights on cars are just plain dangerous. I no longer drive at night, as new cars coming towards me are brighter when dimmer to the older lights of cars. And to get an impatient driver behind you with their high beams (Country roads) on just so they want you to pull over because they want to do more than the speed limit. When they are that bright I can't see properly to be able to look for somewhere to pull into. They should be banned, or at least have a lower dimmer light.
It's training for Just Cause 5. You need to fire rockets at the billboards to liberate the town.
The food pyramid brought to you by general mills, the dairy industry, and countless other big corporations whose goal was profit over the health of others

Asbestos in popcorn ceiling.
Even in the US. But we've still got a lot of asbestos in old houses. Some of it is probably safest left alone, like old pipe insulation, but some of it, like popcorn ceilings and old vinyl tiles, needs to come out sooner or later, and it can be ruinously expensive to hire experts to do it. So people do it themselves, and hope to be lucky. When they know. A lot of people don't.

Deepfake. Any time i see a video with it all i'm left feeling is fear for the future.
It is so creepy to see they can mimic a person so well that it is so hard to tell if it is really them or artificially produced! Same feeling I have when I have seen them....fear of the future!
Future?! We are already living in that future right now.
Load More Replies...It goes hand-in-hand with misinformation and government propaganda. Makes you doubt everything in life because anything becomes possible.
A deepfake is basically an artificially produced piece of media (usually images, videos or voice audio) depicting and impersonating a person (often celebrities or politicians) and since they usually use an AI that analyses the "original" to produce a kind of deep copy they look genuinely real and unless you know exactly what to look for there's no way to distinguish fake from original (even if you know what to look for it's hard). So basically if this takes off in a big way you can't ever be sure again if something is real or fake which is why the op is worried about deepfakes.
Load More Replies...Standardized testing "These tests are too crude to be used, and should be abandoned" -Horace mann the inventor of standardized testing on the subject of standardized testing
If everyone should be taught to AT LEAST *this* level, then a standardised test to ensure that is happening makes perfect sense. The problem with education is trying to teach every child the same way, and treating them the same, when some naturally struggle and some naturally excel. The whole world is obsessed with "everyone is the same", except (let me say this loudly for the woke with their airpods in) WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME
Live in Oregon ... they no longer require standard education. You do NOT have to be able to read, write, or do basic math to graduate from an Oregon school! Way to be WOKE!
That's not due to lack of standardized testing. That's bad educational policy. Blame your politicians for that! Who voted them in?
Load More Replies...This year the UK allowed teachers to grade their own students because covid prevented the national exams being held. The result was a record breaking level of grade A’s being handed out (75% higher than the actual exam results in 2019). The educational system has deteriorated to the level where a growing proportion of school leavers are functionally illiterate anyway. As an employer I will be especially wary of hiring people who graduated this year because of the rampant grade inflation. We will be introducing our own testing during recruitment to assess numerical and literacy skills.
We only have them in three grade levels where I live and they aren't used to pass or fail students. They just use them to spot problem areas for students to work on which is the only reason they should be used.
They no longer are using college tests to get into college. And not only are tests racist but getting a license is now being considered racist. You know, like to be a doctor.
I dunno.... looking from a US perspective, you need to know and justifiy where educational money will go to fund improvement and make sure a student has basic reading and math skills necessary to move on to higher grades/levels/graduation. It also helps to identify learning disabilities? Maybe there should be not as much emphasis on it as there is currently, but it does serve a purpose.
It does, but it's unfortunately poorly designed for purpose, plus it's resulted in teaching to the test, which can leave students woefully unprepared for anything else.

Political parties. We should have listened to Washington…
I lived in a country without parties. There was only one. It is today called dictatorship.
YOu are mis-understanding. No political parties means no politiccal parties, not one. It means you are gov;erned by consensus . The people elected don't have a party agenda. They are there to collaborate, cooperate and reach consensus as to what is best for the people they represent. Funny thing for all the people who claim they want things run like companies or corporations. Any company that has a Board of Directors they are run by consensus.

Load More Replies...Wait? What is wrong with political parties? I mean, what is the alternative? The political parties offer us a great shorthand when it comes to voting in local elections. There isn't much information on the candidates more often than not, and the political affiliation is basically all I have to go on and it gives me a good idea of what their general policies will be.
Political parties are going to be a part of any democratic country. It is up to people to see through manipulation and not capitulate to cheap tribalism as a substitute for in depth analysis.
The problem isn't political parties, it's people voting for one or the other based purely on how / where they grew up rather than the actual aims of that party. If you can't name 3 things on the manifesto of both parties, you probably shouldn't be voting
If you don't want political parties, we can name them political groups or anything, it doesn't make anything better. This isn't the problem. The problem is when the people have too little control over poiticians, or when the people are not well informed to make good decisions, or when they are not educated well enough to recognise when they are being manipulated and mislead.
We need more parties, not less. Diversity can help overcome the gridlock.
I live in a country with 9 parties in parliament at present. Some people say this country does quite allright.
Of course this is far better! More representation for everyone in the parliament is better for democracy! You have more choice than to choose between the bad and the worse all the time

Where is this still available? I thought it was gone due to messing up the catalytic converters?
Propeller aircraft still use leaded gasoline. If I remember right, the lead is used to cool exhaust temps and to act as a valve lubricant, and so that it won't vapor lock at 20,000 ft.
Load More Replies...One of the main engineers responsible for leaded petrol went on to develop CFCs for refrigeration. Good intentions but quite a legacy to leave the world with!
The guys name was Thomas Midgley Jr. the story gets worse, after he created CFC’s, he contracted Polio in 1940 which crippled him. He then invented a track and pully system in his house to get around, quite ingenious really. It later strangled him to death.
Load More Replies...Leaded gas was awful, horrible and terrible for the environment. But it smelled soooo good.
Sure does! A gas engine on rich mixture smells good, too, while still, these are the most poisonous exhuast gases it even is capable to produce. Only Diesel are worse.

This is twosided. As the molecule including lead was a knock inhibitor, it helped maintain high and reliable knock resistance long before engines were able to adapt to lower qualities than they were developed for - therefore, they had to be developed for the poorest they'd ever run with, and by the use of TEL, knock resistance was made reliable. By this, it helped safe a lot of fuel over the decades it was in use. And, yes, lead kills your cat.
Lootboxes and pay to win games.
Aren’t loot boxes classified as gambling now? I remember reading something like that or that they should be classed as gambling.
Belgium actually banned them under Gambling Rules, after EA's Starwars Battlefront II took it to new levels. (Disney nearly pulled their license).
Load More Replies...As far as I was aware loot boxes just gave out rewards based on a random generator for completing a quest or killing a min boss/local boss in RPG games I wouldn’t put that version of them on this list
cough cough Ubisoft. They are a huge offender. It is why have not liked any Assassins' creed games since Black Flag.
War. I know this one is generic, but the entire concept is a bunch of poor people murdering each other because to rich spoiled old men couldn't stand not getting their way. How about this. If you are one of the leaders pushing for a war you have to go to the front line to fight it or your opinion is thrown out. If you aren't willing to die for your beliefs I sure as hell aren't going to.
#51 - Autotune used as a vocal instrument. The inventor of autotune created it to correct micro-pitch variations on vocal tracks in the studio, for use by the recording engineer, NOT to make you sound like a faulty robot.
Definitely. Most if not all promote hate and discrimination because they were made in past times. Not all religious people is bad but imo most if not all religions are.

It's a small annoyance that culminates as you keep hopping back and falling for it again, and absolutely the sort of small clue culminating in realizing you're not actually in the Good Place.
Fake accounts and spambots. Whoever invented those or uses those should be shot
I am relieved to see these answers. I always wondered if I was alone in this. I knew I wasn't but I rarely heard this sort of feedback.
Ads in games. Like when it says that you can only do a particular thing if you watch an ad. It's so irritating and I have zero desire to get a game because of a stupid 30 second ad.
