To make our lives easier and more comfortable, people have always come up with new inventions and most of them have been really useful, like cutlery or medicine to treat illnesses that were once incurable. But there are inventions that benefit humans less and may even be dangerous.

We all probably have looked at something, couldn’t understand the purpose of it and thought that it was unnecessary to invent it. Redditor numbnerve wanted to know what people think is the invention we would be better off without and over 22k people joined the discussion with some serious answers.

Don’t forget to upvote the redditors’ answers you agree with the most and if there is something you think belongs in this list and wasn't mentioned, leave it in the comments!

Am I the only one that think these kids look absolutely hideous anyway? After all that ridiculous makeup is caked on they look more like Bride of Chucky than children.

I was a beauty pageant kid. It's a sick, sick world. Fake teeth, fake hair, fake tan, and self-esteem issues. I was a happy confident kid and then at ten started watching my weight because I thought I was chunky at 85 pounds. It hurt my relationship with my late mother and I don't talk to my dad anymore because he still sees nothing wrong with it. My mom eventually regretted it and made amends with me. Dad allowed my half sister to do it even after I ended up in therapy because of what I went through. It's about the prize money for him and a lot of the parents, not the kids.

I happen to come across a tv channel showing this. I was aghast at how sexualized some of the contestants were. In the talent portion, there was this maybe 5 year old doing twirking and hip thrusts. What kind of parent allows for this?

Okay this depends. Masterchef Australia is considered reality TV and it's a great show. There is no drama between contestants as they are super supportive of one another. The only drama is if they will finish the food on time.

Only the STOOPID ones! I know which ones they mean, but there are a TON of good ones and several GREAT ones! Some are WONDERFUL! Any show where the competitors help each other, and hug and cry over the one who has to leave like: The Great British Baking Show, The Great Canadian Baking Show, Making It, Next in Fashion. Also try Blown Away, Glow Up, The Big Flower Fight. Love The Voice, So You Think You Can Dance, America's Got Talent, The Masked Singer, World of Dance... And don't forget Mythbusters! Bill Nye, The Science Guy! Queer Eye! How to Look Good Naked, Top Gear... Also Good Eats! Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, You've Gotta Eat Here, Carnival Eats, The Chefs Line, Ugly Delicious... And then there are all the renovating shows! Good Bones, Boise Boys, Proprty Brothers, Home Town, Holmes on Homes... The animal shows! There are so many good ones out there!

I don't know all the proper terms but I think some of the shows on your list aren't quite what I think the OP is really referring to which is often called 'scripted reality' eg Love Island. The others are competition, property shows, cooking shows - more non-fiction, rather than reality TV which is a misnomer as it seems to be a strange depiction of what they think reality should be. If that makes any sense!!

The rest of the shark is not "profitable" to sell, so they fill up the limited space of the ship with just the profitable fins. They cut off the shark's fin and then just dump them back into the sea, bleeding and unable to swim...

There's a prison in SK, Canada, where inmates work on a farm and raise their own food. I'm all for decreasing the cost to taxpayers, but the prisoners also have to earn (by good behaviour) the privelege of working in the gardens, it teaches them good skills and helps with rehabilitation. The incidence of violence are notably lower (gardening is very therapeutic.)

It is disutopian in the extreme that the organisations that are supposed to be rehabilitating offenders profit from them getting sent back to prison.

More guard abuse of prisoners, and more recidivism, as well as monetary penalties to the prison for not keeping all their beds/cells full. Which means that the incentive is to prosecute people on any charge to incarcerate. Police become indoctrinated by political pressure from higher ups to find any reason to put people in jail. Sometimes, made up reasons.

For profit a lot of things are similar. Some tasks are just better left with a government, who do not have to make money on it. The encentive to earn money and provide a good service does not always lign up in neat manor, and hence if you optimise too much for one of them, it often introduces some mechanism that makes the other one suffer. Running a for profit organisation often becomes more a matter of appearing good than delivering a product that is good. This means that assigning a big part of your budget to advertising makes sense, whereas a governmental institution does not have to focus on attracting customers, and can spend those resources on providing the core service, e.g. healthcare.

50 Inventions People In This Online Group Think Shouldn’t Have Seen The Light Of Day Landmines. I'll tell you why: They render large tracts of land completely unusable They are expensive and difficult to remove safely because there is seldom documentation of where they are placed They are cheap, plentiful, easy to place, and deadly They kill/maim livestock and wild animals They kill/maim innocent people decades after conflicts have ended. Many times the victims are children because they can't read or don't understand warning signs

Land mines are designed to not be detectible by metal detectors, otherwise it would be too easy for the enemy to remove them. The most efficient method is to clear them with heavy equipment (flails, bulldozers, etc), but that requires significant capital investment, and isn't practical in all terrain.

At the end of last year they cleared the last remaining landmine from the Falklands. They had been placed there in the war almost 40 years previously. One benefit though, some of the beaches were unusable for humans as we didn't know 'exactly' where they were but that they were around these areas and so you find the most spectacularly beautiful, untouched by humans for 4 decades, full of wildlife and penguins rearing their young.

The element I find most disturbing is that there are many people who spend their entire working lives endeavouring ways to kill more people more efficiently. For example, mines that will spring up to 3 feet and explode in a horizontal plane. Or the cluster bombs that will leave mines on damaged roads/runways so that the driver of the bulldozer will effectively target himself as he levels the ground. There are far too many other examines to list here, each more vile.

EVERYTHING can be turned into a weapon. EVERYTHING. Saying that we should ban all weapons [I mean who would disagree] means you are going to ban a LOT of tech, from wires to gasoline to salt. And, yes, I agree. But like a former POW told me, the point of war is to kill them so that they don't kill you.

In El Salvador, during the civil war, the guerrilla set rudimentary "pipe bombs" made with PVC pipes, bolts, and powder on the plantations of rich families. This tactic caused the death and thousands of farmworkers' mutilations, which didn't have any alternative.

Unless they had pressure triggers not the same. People still put IEDs all over, but a land mine is worse as there is no one setting it off it just sits there for years or decades waiting for something to trigger it.

    - It is estimated that there are 110 million land mines in the ground right now. An equal amount is in stockpiles waiting to be planted or destroyed. - Mines cost between $3 and $30, but the cost of removing them is $300 to $1000. - The cost of removing all existing mines would be $50- to $100-billion. - According to the 'International Campaign to Ban Landmines network', more than 4,200 people, of whom 42% are children, have been falling victim to landmines annually in many of the countries affected by war or in post-conflict situations around the world. http://www.landminefree.org/2017/index.php/support/facts-about-landmines

I stopped him and said, "No. I want knobs, dials, and switches, please, not motherboards." He looked confused, whereupon I said, "If an analog part fails, I can replace it with another switch. I replaced my parents thermostat with a nest, because my dad was having trouble walking up the stairs to reach the old one. It ended up backfiring a bit. I took the time to download the app to devices and show them how to use it, but they would still text me to change it for them.

Manufacturing products to have an intentionally shortened life span is quite common for most products. With electronics being mostly comprised of non-recyclable components; designed to be intentionally unrepairable, it's also creating a large strain on the environment.

The Chinese lied for years about the tonnage of fish they were "removing" from the ocean. So, forecasts by the UN and other organizations was that the oceans were not being "over fished" but the Chinese were lying. For two reasons, the fishermen had quotas they had to meet, which were impossible so they lied about how many fish they caught. And the Chinese government continued to the lies so that they could continue to over fish.

The most stupid thing is, it's the fishermen it harms when the stocks drop. Same with using nets with small holes that catch EVERYTHING, or catching loads and then dumping part of that catch because you went "over quota" rather than working on catching JUST your quota.

The problem is that as long as the competitors are doing it, there is little point in not doing it, or you will not stay competible. It quickly develops into a race for the bottom with a disarsterous result. The only cure is to either put in regulations or have mutual agreement of no one doing it. As long a just one does it, it ruins it for everyone while it benefits he who does it, and hence the others will soon join.

China and Japan being the top two. they cut the fins from living sharks and throw them alive back into the ocean to die. they use lines and hooks to catch them and some drown before they are pulled out of the water because they can't move. Watched a show by Green Peace, yeah I know about the controversy of their methods, but better someone try than not. the gov'ts are allowing this because the fish moguls pay them off. The UK doesn't have so much trouble with these thanks to the Telephone Preference Service, which allows people to opt-out of sales calls. This works for legitimate companies, but unfortunately the scammers don't abide by the rules. I have a Raspberry Pi with a Fax Modem that monitors incoming calls on my landline and answers as a fax machine to unknown numbers or numbers I have blocked. Really we should be beyond this, but the telecommunications industry doesn't seem to want to fix it.

I get called (on my landline) frequently by 'people from Microsoft' and they always introduce themselves with a very English sounding name, eg John Williams or Mary Smith. They are all Indians and speak with an Indian accent lol.

The ones I hate are the robocalls that know how to leave a voicemail. Oddly enough, I don't believe that the warranty on my car has expired! Probably because my car hasn't had a warranty on it since about 15 years before I bought it!

I have caller ID on my land line. If it says "unavailable" I don't answer. I only answer for numbers I know. When I am reading and the phone rings and I don't know who it is, I hit the speaker button and don't say anything. It costs them if it is long distance. They never say anything, they just hang up.

Without speaking. Hit the answer button, then # key twice (##), hang up button. It signals older autodialers you have a non functioning number and you will get dropped from their list.

I worked 60+ hour weeks for almost a decade before the pandemic hit, and any time I see people pushing for fewer hours, I point out that unless they address the larger economic issues, it’s just going to be a perk for people above a certain income threshold. It’s telling that the progressive party in my country is tackling things like housing prices first.

But to get rid of that, we (USA) need to increase pay. There is no way someone working for $7.25 an hour can live without a 40+ hour workweek, whether it be one job or two or three.

fun fact: school in Australia takes 6 hours, 5 days a week. Add to that ~1.5 hours of homework a day and that adds up to a work week of 37.5 hours. Maximum work week for an adult working is 38 hours. AND THEY ARE GETTING PAID TO DO IT.

Pesticides used properly have their place. Without pesticides food would be less abundant as crops would be eaten by insects. The goal is balance. Not enough pesticides to kill pollinators, just enough not to lose crops.

You have to be a bit more specific than just ‘pesticides’. Glyphosphate is very low impact compared to nicotinoids, and a lot less toxic than the copper sulphate organic farmers slather over their overpriced crops

Where I live you have to be licenced to use commercial farming pesticides. They are used sparingly to keep food costs down, not wholesale or recklessly as some would suggest. It's bad form to poison your neighbours. As well, government inspectors, farm loan boards, and insurance companies (both crop and farm ins) all weigh in requiring reports and testing. FYI Sprays are used to kill off bugs that destroy crops. They also stop molds and blights that will kill the plants or poison us. Talk to a farmer about why they do stuff. BTW, always wash all your produce even after covid. The planet is a giant compost heap.

Some sites are better than others, but it is starting to get annoying, as when you decline cookies on a site, it can't set a cookie to say that you declined cookies, so it asks you every ruddy time you visit it! Not all cookies are evil and some are needed to make sites work, such as remembering preferences and logins, but tracking cookies can go and do one!

Blame the EU for this and their stupid Data Protection Laws. I spent a whole year learning about this when it was brought in. Spent 6 months making sure we ready and compliant. I then found out that some government agencies are openly breaking the rules with a built in "get out" clause. If they use the term "Deemed necessary" they can just ignore the rules and pass data on without asking permission.

That has nothing to do with fast fashion. Cotton and linnen for example always wrinkle. But wearing clothes made of plastic (polyester, acrylic) wrinkle way less. (Yet they leave microplastics in the water every wash, so that doesn't sound like a better choice.)

I stopped buying fast fashion about 7 years ago. Cut my closet down by around 70%. I just buy far less clothing and buy good clothing when I need it. I use to love shopping but now I absolutely hate it. Completely changed my mindset. Mostly I buy thrifted stuff for my work clothing, then nice things for nights out or events. My clothes take up half a standard closet.

espically annoying are videos that pops up in a textpage, e.g. and article when it is placed in the middle of the text and only pops up once you scroll past it. I was in the middel of reading an article and do not care about your stupid video, which is currently scrolling the text i am interested in out of the screen. When you then scroll down to find the text while ignoring the videos the video "colapses" and moves the text back up, so I suddently is further down in the text that I entended. Then I scoll up to find the next section, video pops up again and presses text down etc. In this fashion you can hunt for a certain section witout being able to ever see it. Not only does your video waste my time but the way it is programmed makes the webpage practically useless.

One aspect of this that I find dreadfully concerning is that we've become dependent on single-use plastics for sterility with frequently-used medical supplies, like pen needles for insulin, sterile packaging, shields for thermometers and other meters, and on and on. The sterile protective equipment being used includes plastic fibers. Plastic is absolutely everywhere in medicine, and most of it is unrecyclable.

In the EU tons of things are packaged in plastic, which you throw away after you have taken the product out. So its still single use plastic basically. So the ban is a nice little start, but just a drop in the ocean.

Again, misleading. Credit card companies charge interchange fees in Europe. Some countries are high, some are lower. The merchant inevitably pases that cost on in the form of higher base prices. So basically, every customer covers the cost.

Fees on debit or credit cards, other than interest, are only for those with low credit scores. They call it a convenience fee because they gave a credit limit to someone who wouldn't typically get one with their credit history. The small monthly fee is to help boost their credit score because it shows that they make timely payments every month. Anyone with even lower than average credit scores don't typically receive a convenience fee. It's used to help the worst of the worst earn a credit history again.

I have some kind of ad blocker on all my devices. My laptops also have NoScript installed as well so only the bare minimum needed for me to see a site is allowed.

I love my NoScript! I also have cookiebro, but i don't know if it also blocks advertising. It deletes cookies after a set time, so I have to re-enter my passwords now and then but hell, totally worth it! (and I COULD whitelist these sites, but I definitily don't want to do that for google or youtube or social media-sites)

Set your PC to a reset date. After so many of these, I'll do a reset to a certain date that I set, and my PC will go back to before all the pop-ups and viruses. All of my work and files are always backed up to an external Hard Drive. All the pop-ups and potential viruses are gone.

I agree. I can somewhat understand if there's some special cosmetic things you can only get by buying them with real money, as long as it's not the only way to gain nice cosmetic things in the game. In kids games there shouldn't be any microtransactions though, that's just so f*****g wrong.

Im gonna have to disagree with you here although some of them are pretty toxic (looking at you twitter, Ig, snap, and Facebook) apps like YouTube, discord, and reddit (and BP) have great communities. Especially with YouTube i feel like they dont cause all of these effects that you mentioned. I feel like one of the main reasons social media gets a bad rep is because there are a few people who are toxic and then they make the whole community look bad. I know from personal experience that this happens because one of the game communities im in got a bad rep for 1 guy being an idiot. (Sorry for a whole rant lmao)

Always found it so strange the weight that seems to be put on polygraph tests in the USA, in both fiction and real life crime cases. Its so unreliable, but the results seem to have such a big impact on how suspects are viewed

Probably find it strange because it isn't true. Even in the US a polygraph is only admissable in civil cases and even then, in most states, both parties must agree.

That is the question. If a suspect believe in it working, it may be used as a usefull tool, whereby you might apear to be able to "close the door" and force a confession out of him. If he thinks you can see through all his lies by this tool, he may give up upon the option of lying and instead choose to tell the truth. Don't underestimate the power of a good bluff.

In the US, polygraphs are not admissible as evidence in court and are mostly used to get a better sense of the suspect’s emotions and whatnot.

It's more of a psychological weapon to get people to confess. We had a local cop get in trouble for running wires and a blood pressure cuff to his desk drawer and running out a bogus printout while interrogation was going on. He was in trouble because he was pulling this before people had called a lawyer.

I think it's more a scare tactic than anything else. it's unusable in courts. like you can't fail one and and have it shown in court you failed to help convict you. but when you do take one and fail it could scare you into admitting guilt.

It drives me crazy when you buy something, and it has massive pieces of styrofoam for the packing, that you now have to somehow get rid of. You can't recycle it. You can't throw it away. I once had the garbage man empty everything out of the can, and put all the styrofoam back in it. You're pretty much stuck breaking it into little pieces and trying to hide it in with the rest of the trash.

Lead lights on cars are just plain dangerous. I no longer drive at night, as new cars coming towards me are brighter when dimmer to the older lights of cars. And to get an impatient driver behind you with their high beams (Country roads) on just so they want you to pull over because they want to do more than the speed limit. When they are that bright I can't see properly to be able to look for somewhere to pull into. They should be banned, or at least have a lower dimmer light.

Even in the US. But we've still got a lot of asbestos in old houses. Some of it is probably safest left alone, like old pipe insulation, but some of it, like popcorn ceilings and old vinyl tiles, needs to come out sooner or later, and it can be ruinously expensive to hire experts to do it. So people do it themselves, and hope to be lucky. When they know. A lot of people don't.

If you find it in your home, hire a reputable company with the required training/licensing to remove it, it's not something you want to cheap out on.

There hasn't been asbestos used in homes since before 1980. If you suspect asbestos, contact a company and have them test, or send a postage size piece of whatever you suspect to a testing company.

    aj

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

A deepfake is basically an artificially produced piece of media (usually images, videos or voice audio) depicting and impersonating a person (often celebrities or politicians) and since they usually use an AI that analyses the "original" to produce a kind of deep copy they look genuinely real and unless you know exactly what to look for there's no way to distinguish fake from original (even if you know what to look for it's hard). So basically if this takes off in a big way you can't ever be sure again if something is real or fake which is why the op is worried about deepfakes.

If everyone should be taught to AT LEAST *this* level, then a standardised test to ensure that is happening makes perfect sense. The problem with education is trying to teach every child the same way, and treating them the same, when some naturally struggle and some naturally excel. The whole world is obsessed with "everyone is the same", except (let me say this loudly for the woke with their airpods in) WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME

This year the UK allowed teachers to grade their own students because covid prevented the national exams being held. The result was a record breaking level of grade A’s being handed out (75% higher than the actual exam results in 2019). The educational system has deteriorated to the level where a growing proportion of school leavers are functionally illiterate anyway. As an employer I will be especially wary of hiring people who graduated this year because of the rampant grade inflation. We will be introducing our own testing during recruitment to assess numerical and literacy skills.

I dunno.... looking from a US perspective, you need to know and justifiy where educational money will go to fund improvement and make sure a student has basic reading and math skills necessary to move on to higher grades/levels/graduation. It also helps to identify learning disabilities? Maybe there should be not as much emphasis on it as there is currently, but it does serve a purpose.

YOu are mis-understanding. No political parties means no politiccal parties, not one. It means you are gov;erned by consensus . The people elected don't have a party agenda. They are there to collaborate, cooperate and reach consensus as to what is best for the people they represent. Funny thing for all the people who claim they want things run like companies or corporations. Any company that has a Board of Directors they are run by consensus.

This is the correct answer. Having ranked choice voting or MMP will improve things.

The problem with the USA isn't that there's parties. It's that there are enough parties, there's only left or right, no middle or alternative. My country y Switzerland, has about a dozend, but only the biggest one are directly represented by our government.

Watch Veep and it really shows you both sides. House of cards too. Countries need to stop the two party system

Wait? What is wrong with political parties? I mean, what is the alternative? The political parties offer us a great shorthand when it comes to voting in local elections. There isn't much information on the candidates more often than not, and the political affiliation is basically all I have to go on and it gives me a good idea of what their general policies will be.

Political parties are going to be a part of any democratic country. It is up to people to see through manipulation and not capitulate to cheap tribalism as a substitute for in depth analysis.

The problem isn't political parties, it's people voting for one or the other based purely on how / where they grew up rather than the actual aims of that party. If you can't name 3 things on the manifesto of both parties, you probably shouldn't be voting

If you don't want political parties, we can name them political groups or anything, it doesn't make anything better. This isn't the problem. The problem is when the people have too little control over poiticians, or when the people are not well informed to make good decisions, or when they are not educated well enough to recognise when they are being manipulated and mislead.

We need more parties, not less. Diversity can help overcome the gridlock.

I live in a country with 9 parties in parliament at present. Some people say this country does quite allright.

Of course this is far better! More representation for everyone in the parliament is better for democracy! You have more choice than to choose between the bad and the worse all the time

Where is this still available? I thought it was gone due to messing up the catalytic converters?

Propeller aircraft still use leaded gasoline. If I remember right, the lead is used to cool exhaust temps and to act as a valve lubricant, and so that it won't vapor lock at 20,000 ft.

One of the main engineers responsible for leaded petrol went on to develop CFCs for refrigeration. Good intentions but quite a legacy to leave the world with!

The guys name was Thomas Midgley Jr. the story gets worse, after he created CFC’s, he contracted Polio in 1940 which crippled him. He then invented a track and pully system in his house to get around, quite ingenious really. It later strangled him to death.

Leaded gas was awful, horrible and terrible for the environment. But it smelled soooo good.

Sure does! A gas engine on rich mixture smells good, too, while still, these are the most poisonous exhuast gases it even is capable to produce. Only Diesel are worse.

They put Lead in as an improvement, but they had to charge more. Found out it was harmful, so they stopped putting it in. So of course, they again had to charge more. (It’s never less is it?)

This is twosided. As the molecule including lead was a knock inhibitor, it helped maintain high and reliable knock resistance long before engines were able to adapt to lower qualities than they were developed for - therefore, they had to be developed for the poorest they'd ever run with, and by the use of TEL, knock resistance was made reliable. By this, it helped safe a lot of fuel over the decades it was in use. And, yes, lead kills your cat.

Aren’t loot boxes classified as gambling now? I remember reading something like that or that they should be classed as gambling.

Belgium actually banned them under Gambling Rules, after EA's Starwars Battlefront II took it to new levels. (Disney nearly pulled their license).

As far as I was aware loot boxes just gave out rewards based on a random generator for completing a quest or killing a min boss/local boss in RPG games I wouldn’t put that version of them on this list
