Some folks see time from an existential perspective, a ceaseless force that can not be escaped and which will eventually consume all. But, setting that aside, time also has all sorts of interesting effects on the world around us.

We’ve gathered some cool and curious examples of how time affects everyday items. I have these. I had no idea that's what was causing them and no one told me. It's weird the stuff they just don't bother to tell you because it's not "medically relevant". I never thought that's what would be causing it so never thought to ask. So thank you.

I had these when I had chemo (am all fine now). Chemo attacks dividing cells, cancer cells dividing much more rapidly than non cancerous cells. Some that divide naturally very quickly also get attacked, which is why you lose your hair. Nails being pretty much the same thing but growing differently get impacted like this.

Yup, I was a raging ginger as a young lad. Once I got into my mid 20's it had noticeably faded to more of a copper/blond color. Both my aunt and uncle are gingers too and they went white in their 40's-50's.

Probably all hair changes during time. I had black/brown hair when I was born/little and now it's cinnamon colored. My kid had light blond "children of the corn" hair, it was creepy blond, and now it's a more light wheat colour.

My 2-Decades-Old Water Bottle Gave Out Last Week, And Nalgene Just Sent The Replacement

My 2-Decades-Old Water Bottle Gave Out Last Week, And Nalgene Just Sent The Replacement

I don’t know how many metric tons of water I consumed out of this, how many miles it traveled with me, or the number of times it tumbled down a rocky trail, but the answer to all of them is a lot. It finally met its demise last week when it fell out of my stationary car. I reached out to Nalgene, and their replacement just arrived. I don’t have much customer loyalty, but Nalgene is pretty great.

I'm assuming from the way this was phrased that they replaced it for free (under warranty still?) I mean I'm all for holding a company accountable for replacing faulty products but I feel like they deserve to sell another one after 15 years of constant use and associated wear and tear (regardless of the warranty you have).

One of the coolest places I’ve ever been is York Cathedral in York, UK. They had a problem a fairly long time ago, where the cathedral’s towers were threatening to fall. I read about it when I was young. So, anyway, they went up under the towers to shore them up with massive braces. While doing so, they found ancient ruins from a Bronze Age settlement and a later Roman one. They preserved as much as they could. The result was that you can tour that small museum of the ancient past, then climb the very worn stairs of the towers to a viewing deck on top. You then look out over a huge modern city. 4000 years of history in about 200 feet. I have a piece of the original limestone facing I bought there. The inner face has a carving of the cathedral, and you can see the horrific damage done by time and acid rain. Amazing.

Amputee here. I also have the same style foot. The outer shell is more cosmetic and a filler for shoes. The internals are what actually provide the step and spring action. The curved tip for the “toe” area typically goes through the cosmetic foot within just a few weeks then it starts working on the shoe. By the time my my shoes are worn out the toe portion has worn about half way through my shoe. I’m not sentimental about mine either. It just wears out and I hold out as long as I can because they start wearing out quick but hold out enough and I can’t justify the cost every couple months.

I washed windows in this beautiful, cliff-sided house in Sausalito, just over the Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. Three sides were glass overlooking San Francisco Bay. The views were magnificent. Anyway, I finish the job and move on to other endeavors. I call my old boss and he brings up this house. He had to replace the sliding doors because of scratches. He asks if I or my equipment caused them. I had to think. They had three big dogs. Any scratches on any other glass? No. Then the dogs did it, scratching to get in and get out. Get your money back from these overly-rich people. And I think he did.

Naturally, given the “risks” involved, we were curious to hear what exactly she liked about thrifting so much. “Personally, I love thrifting for so many reasons….I could write a whole book. As a petite woman, it’s very difficult to find clothing in my style that fits me just right. Thrifting has opened up the opportunity for me to find the uniquely sized pieces that fit just right (thank you, small Grandmas, with stellar retro wardrobes) and/or experiment without breaking the bank. Since thrift finds also cost close to nothing, I can use the money saved to alter/tailor pieces that I can truly enjoy forever.”

I have a special pencil holder for these, but I found out I prefer a metal pencil with a replaceable lead, it's called "versatile" and you can buy different kinds of leads into it.

My brother had almost the exact same toy as a kid. He called it Baby Kitty and kept it until he was in his 20's. (At which point he lost it) For his wedding rehearsal dinner I got him a replacement. :)

We did this for our son's puppy (stuffed animal) that my grandpa sent to him, it got something all over it and the instructions said not to wash, only surface wash...well it was so disgusting I had no choice but to wash it by hand and hope for the best. But, I also went online and found another one. He continued to love that first one so much it's matted and the new one? While he did sleep with it, it didn't go everywhere with him so it to this day looks so much newer (14 years later). The difference in the two is astounding, you can tell which one he loved the most lol

We saw similar wear in the stone of a medieval church in the small German town of Quedlinburg. We were talking a walking tour of the town, and I noticed numerous symetric round pits in the wall of the church up to perhaps 10cm across and no higher than chest height. They weren't associated with any metal parts. The docent said the best guess as to their origin is that churchgoers would scrape a few grains of the sandstone out and ingest them in order to literally incorporate the church into themselves, although no one knew for sure anymore. Over the years, the pits grew grain by grain to a significant size.

Yes, that is what happens when there is no door stop or protection for the wall. My towel storage unit is behind my bathroom door. I do not have a door stop or haven't bother to put up any kind of barrier between the two. The inside door k**b lock hits my towel storage unit doors, it has put a small dent into the towel storage doors.

I tied a scarf round my kitchen door handle, because the door's usually open. The other doors don't tend to go right back to the wall, so the problem doesn't arise.

My daughter had a pink blanket - standard baby blankie with a waffle weave and satin edging. She loved that thing to death. It was practically see-through. God only knows how many times I patched that rag up, but a replacement was entirely out of the question. My granddaughter turned 18 last year and still has about 1 square foot of it in her memory box.

I'm guessing you've stayed around the same weight. I've been married for 6 years now, I gained & then lost about 90lbs since our wedding. I never took my ring off and even though I am back at my normal weight now, I have an indentation on my finger. Not as significant, but definitely there.

I was wearing my engagement ring while playing softball. (Stupid, I know). Our shortstop rifled one to me at 1st base, guy was out but the ring was SMASHED onto my finger. There was a firehouse 2 blocks away, so I walked over (in my cleats & uniform) and asked if they could please cut it off, not only was my finger purple and swollen, but we were in game 3 of a 5 game tournament. They cut it off and several of the guys gave me a ride in the ladder rig back to the field. I was a rock star! One of my favorite memories of playing ball. (Yes, we won the tournament).

I’ve had my class ring on for 34 years. It’s a size 8. I then lost a lot of weight and now my finger is a size 6. A few years ago I lost my ring and panicked! I later found it in the bottom of a cracker box when I spotted something sparlkly. I’m wearing it around my neck for now but I’m going to see how much it would cost me to resize the ring so I don’t lose it again.

My finger and wedding band look just like this. 31 years of marriage (so far - going for another 31 as long as she puts up with me!). Knuckles swollen from several years of arthritis. The ring isn't tight; it can twirl on my finger, and isn't uncomfortable.

I think it would be of too much sentimental value to get a new one. But I do think the blanket would last longer and be less delicate if OP used some fabric patches. I’ve seen a lot of cute materials in flea markets or thrift stores you can get pretty cheap.

The rest is a bit dirty but otherwise looks pretty good. I've already got a replacement along with 2 4TB hard drives and a 512 GB SSD for the boot drive. It's not so much the salt as the hydrophilic nature of salt to pull moisture in from the air and cause the damage in a salt/water mix.

Chocolate is usually perfectly edible if just discoloured like this. It could be a rule to have the container filled, so why put away something ok if you get it from below anyway?

    Cody Greenwood

Not that you'd want to however as this process destroies the texture and flavor. Even if the rule is to have the container filled; the fifo method would have you take out the old ones put the new ones in and replace the old on top. This is just bad food safety in general.

Older vehicle keys have a number on them denoting the tooth pattern. A locksmith or car dealership can look up the number and cut a new key.

It occurs to me that if the old one still works, the inside of the lock has had "equal treatment" and as such the pins are most likely gone, and that is why the old key works. And it also means that basically anything key that can fit will start the car.

I can relate hear, as I have very thick, almost afro-like hair, and I rarely go out without headphones on. When my hair gets long, it grows out rather than down, so a long day with headphones one leads to a very noticable dent in my hair from where they have been sat.

When the hat starts to require daily repairs to ensure "regular" usage, then its is time for a new one.

It's an "animated" snow globe. The animation is created by a magnet on the wet side rotated by a corresponding magnet on the dry side of the base. PartyLights snowglobes are notorious for this. The natural porosity of the plastic used to encase the magnet allows a tiny amount of water through, rusting the magnet until the internal pressure causes that plastic to split, exposing the entire magnet bar to the water. Corrosion turns the water ruddy brown, or black. I briefly had a business selling repair kits for these, but either people didn't really care or couldn't be bothered to fix them.

There was a hardware store in a Detroit suburb that had wood floors worn down like this.

And wash them less often. If you don´t wear them several days in a row, i go weeks without washing mines.

If the fabric is still good. Get some dye, and dye the jeans. They'll look so good afterwards.

My everyday belt came from the thrift store more than 15 years ago. No brand name, no marks on it of any kind and it shows barely any wear at all except for the plating on the buckle. I wish I knew who made it because I'd buy stock in that company.

Lol. Your experience is evidence to definitely NOT buy stock in that company.

I couldn't stand a dying belt anymore, so I got an everlasting one which is not made of leather and works without a classic belt buckle...👍🏽

My late husband had a hat worn out like this. Tried to get him to wear new ones without success. Now I can't part with it.

Clearly he's a Red Sox fan. He must regard it as his lucky hat. Looks as though it's been around at least since the Red Sox finally beat the Curse of the Bambino.
