In hindsight, it seems a bit silly to be surprised by the unexpected when traveling. After all, the entire point is to see and experience new things, otherwise, why spend all the time and money? So one should at least expect some amount of surprises and fortunately for all of us, these travelers made sure to document the unusual or unexpected things they encountered while traversing the globe.

So, wherever you are, get comfortable and prepare to scroll through all the memorable little things tourists and travelers have run into, upvote the experiences that caught you by surprise, and be sure to comment your own stories. And if some of the things listed here are pretty normal where you are from, let us know!

That's because people can control their dogs in Europe. In the US, mothers can't even control their own kids.

I did a painting of a volcano in prison. I used pepper mixed into red paint to make the lava. I gave it to my blind roommate for her birthday, as she could feel it.

The Algerian Sahara By Night. With No Light Pollution, The Sky Is Truly Incredible

I spent four days camping out in the remote Algerian Sahara - just me and a local guide. I took a million photos but this was one of my favorites. Freezing cold at night, but free of all light pollution the sky was breathtakingly beautiful.

I used to sleep out under the stars in Texas, on Lackland Air Force Base outside of San Antonio, when I was ten years old, during 1960+ when it was one of the biggest meteor showers in years. I have never forgotten this and I am now 73 years old. Dying to see it again! (literally) <3 So returning will probably not help now. So sad!

Despite the dangers and discomfort, humans have been fascinated with travel for thousands of years. There are early Medieval examples from all over the world, while the earliest example is “Periplus of the Erythraean Sea,” which is a first-century text describing travel conditions, currents, and weather patterns throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Less a piece of literature, it was more like a guide for merchants who were looking to travel in these areas, though it seems likely that any merchant with half a brain would still need to hire captains and sailors with experience. Currently, it’s not even known who authored the text or if it even had one author, as there is the possibility that it functioned more like a collection of different people’s experiences.

Marco Polo is a more commonly known traveler, but he was not the only one of his contemporaries to write about his experiences. In China, one of Marco Polo’s many destinations, there were even writers who would make “day trip essays,” which would give readers some basic information about different locations that are, as the name suggests, a day’s travel away. However, these essays mainly focused on using the locations to provide some sort of moral lesson, which tells us that even a thousand years ago, people could not help from editorializing.

PSA - This is travel 101. This version is cool but low key version is when you check in some place - grab one of their business cards so you can show it to a taxi. Even in (your language) cities, sometimes the hotel is a major chain and if you just say "Hyatt" or whatever there might be three or four to choose from so you have to know the address.

Indeed, in the 16th century, traveling to what at the time was Persia (mostly modern Iran) and the Indian subcontinent was so popular, that these accounts were often put together into collections, so interested readers could just buy one book and compare. There were similar collections for Europe, though it was seen as less exotic than Asia, and often focused on a single region, such as the Italian peninsula.

As maritime technology developed, the means of transportation itself became a topic of interest. Similar to the travel vlogs of today, there was a lucrative niche describing the realities of ocean voyages and the various sights and experiences one could have. Of course, the average person on, say, a transatlantic ship had a much worse experience than a literate, generally wealthy traveler.

That would be nice. I purposely don't go into some stores because I just want to be left alone. One example is that I don't go into Bath & Body Works because as soon as I walk in the sales people annoy me.

It's very cool. A ride end-to-end takes almost half an hour and passes closely over a lot of rivers & streams (& a highway too). With the wonderful Pina Bausch Dance Company, that makes exactly two things worth seeing in Wuppertal.

This all goes to show that these travelers, documenting and photographing the things they saw are part of an ancient tradition. While we might think of Marco Polo’s writings as more highbrow, he probably would have used a camera, if he had the option, as a picture can really show you what a thousand words can’t. Hopefully, this list has put some wanderlust into you and there will be more interesting experiences from around the world for all of us to enjoy online.

Or lions? Though tougher animals would be more appropriate for the statue's time, I still like that the sculptor made them look so much like bunny socks, even if not on purpose.

These boots are called embromides, which were skillfully crafted dress boots with a feline/lion head for Roman soldiers. That being said, no one knows for sure since no one has ever come upon an extant boot. These boots might simply be an artistic flourish by sculptors who've never seen a lion.

I wouldn't have known they were lions, but they don't look like rabbits at all. Lions seems more likely.

Indiana? Your state is so tiny! Can’t get too bored crossing it it only takes a few hours! And if you get close to Illinois you can see the fireworks billboards! And you have greenery (corn and soybeans counts!). I think the desert parts of CA and AZ need this, although at least the instant dirt color change and presence of saguaros is exciting if you drive for far enough.

Some of these places bother me. It may not happen today or even this year but at some point more of that rock face might calve off. I hope being a tourist area there are regular inspections. Went to a remote rock gorge with a rock overhang as a kid. Walked around under it and all was good. Went back about a year or two later and 10ish feet of the overhang had sheered off and fallen into where we'd been walking the last visit.

Actually, I've been told by smarter people that it's actually more helpful to build up walls around the oasis - closer - to keep the water from getting leeched into the sand. Recall, the basement/foundation goes down about 30% of the height of the building.

When I was stationed in Naples, Italy, a new hospital was being built on the US Naval base. It’s a law that each new build has the site excavated first in case of ruins being there. An ancient Roman well and some other things were found, so it was incorporated into the hospital. Encased in glass too so you could look at it without any harm to it.

In my area, they lay salt rock and a salty solution (different variations, like potassium chloride, magnesium chloride). All of it wreaks havoc on our vehicles because the winters here last so long, and a lot of my area is mountainous with several passes. I always recommend a carwash every couple weeks 😅

I understand things change but that's sort of sad in a way. Locally we have a very old theater with very ornate moldings / paintings / huge chandelier in the ceiling and so on. At one point it was on the chopping block but instead they managed to sell / restore it. Currently used for concerts / plays / sometimes movies / other performers like magic shows and acrobats. It is a mid-size town but is positioned between Seattle and Vancouver BC so it gets more big name acts than you would expect. And I've heard more than one professional performer say the acoustics are very good but I wouldn't really have a basis to say.

What I've taken to doing is tying it and then when I remove it, I leave it tied so I can reuse the knot. I can basically re-wear a tie about 3-4 times before it becomes necessary to redo the knot.

This was changed very recently. Until recently it was low - moderate - high - very high - extreme. "Extreme" used to mean that multiple forest fires are to be expected in the area that very day. The fires that destroyed about half the land occupied by koalas would have been extreme. The new system of categories makes no sense at all.

Good question. I can only say that my experience is that any day with perceivable wind and no rain forecast in spring and summer seems to rate as extreme fire danger.

This is the church at Curon. Curon's residents were forced out and the village flooded for a hydroelectric dam in the 1950s, in spite of objections. The village was demolished, the steeple is all that remains of the 14th century church.

If you're in Cocoa Beach, you would've FELT this launch, too. It was, by far, the coolest thing about living on the Space Coast. I've seen the first female astronaut's launch, many night launches, the Challenger explosion (that was really rough), and whenever there was a day-launch schools would have fire drills so we could all be outside and watch & feel launches (the ground would rumble!). Even got to see the Space Shuttle on its piggyback rides right up the Atlantic Coast!

The bombings were predominantly Broome & Darwin (~3800km from Newcastle); Mini-subs in Sydney harbour (there's a photo that inadvertently caught a torpedo fired by one). Thankfully the Japanese never realised that Fremantle was a major submarine base for both the RAN & USN and which had a major role in the victory over Japan

Sorry, I'm gonna be a buzz kill here, but that is NOT a friendly little stingray who's happy to be held up in a choking environment so a couple of tourists can have a photo op. Leave the damn animals alone, ffs.

This could be in Cayman... the boat takes you to an area where there are lots of stingray waiting to play with you.. they're like puppies and swim right up to you be stroked. They are free to come and go as they please.

I love how india actually respects animals. Unlike hypocrites elsewhere that claim they love animals but then eat them. Just saying. (Not a vegan, just think they do have the moral high ground).

As long as the animals are being treated well before a quick and painless death, there is no problem. Humans are omnivores, just like jasper said. But yes, I would say they do have the moral high ground because in truth, meat animals are not treated well.

That is for the Southeast Asia area, all the vehicles don't have a heater, because there are not 4 seasons, and the lowest can go down to around 20 degrees Celcius or 34 egrees Celcius.

Why? It’s not like they need it. Where I live the temperature never gets cold enough for heating. None of the houses or public buildings have it built in. In the 3 years I’ve had my car the air con has never been set on anything but maximum cooling.

I like this. Even if you want to be a religious nutter, at least you are imposing it on yourself. Better than forcing women to wear excessively large and bulky clothing to fully cover their bodies and infringe on their autonomy. However, it still basically says that women are mere sex objects and young men have zero self-control, so it is STILL perpetuating grotesque patriarchal values. Speaking as a person with jewish family, so don't even come at me with antisemitism c**p.

Sorry but I call BS. Nobody is born religious. Religion is mythology and should not be forced on poor children. It should be illegal to teach lies to children when they are to young to understand or no better. Father Xmas is one thing, I don't like it but once the kids grow up they told the truth. Religion is lies lies lies lies.

There aren't really any sects where this is the common practice. It's just a few extremist friend groups, basically.

Oh my... I'm straight, fertile, male. If you'd surround me with a huge number of women I find attractive, in every state of clothing and horniety - against their will, I would not even touch anyone's foot, let alone - all stepts inbetween - fugg her. Because I have a thing that is called "self control" and very much share the opinion of sexual intercourse requiring the agreement of each involved party (and agreeability, too, of course). I don't expect ANY punishment after death if I do or don't any to them. I'd expect secular punishment according to local habits, which range from all to nothing, to her or my damage - anyway, regardless of all that, I do have the ability to not do things just because they might feel nice. Why are religious men so incredibly weak? Why do they have no ability to constrain themselves at all? How come that the more they believe, the less they can decide on their own? How is it that anything sexual is always considered dirty, evil and all that, but the slightest hint of somebody else having a sufficiently equipped crotch costs them any will, any command over themselves, so that the other part, who didn't even agree on any, or was asked at all to begin with, has to disguise herselves into ugliety in order not to make them horny beyond control? Why are religious men so flawed, and why is it always that any-each-everybody else has to counter their boner, while it is NOT a problem to command them to pray endless hours every day? Can't they simply introduce the concept of mutual agreement into their so-called holy books?

It is an art installation. The windows are not real, but video screens. (Not with a video of you urinating) The urine is collected to make energy.

It's a far better solution than peeing on the wall. A drunk man doesn't care about who see him while he's doing his business.
