Gootta find that candle. I get it, the first part of my recovery journey was when covid happened too. I had a waitress at a diner who knew my year anniversary was coming up and she gave me all jer monthly keychains from NA. Still going strong after 5 years 3 months as of today!
I'll have four months on Monday (May 19th) Keep up the good work!
Dr. Andrew Dillon, who is a V.M. Daniel Regents Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, says that once humans gathered more resources than they immediately needed, they were able to break out of the continual hunting mode and start to trade.
Combined with our abilities to plan and count, collecting emerges as a natural disposition that is subject to the influencing forces of economics, social structures, education, fashion, and personal history.
"In treating collecting as routine, we can view the range of collecting behaviors as expressions which might vary across layers but reflect the shared basis of human motivations underlying our emotions, identity, value, and desire for connection," Dillon explains.

I Spent 4 Years Trying To Grow Salt Cubes At Home. Here Are The Largest And Most Transparent Crystals I've Managed To Grow So Far
Ditto. I was wondering what they actually were. Thought they might have been little resin blocks with stuff inside them. That they're salt crystals is far more impressive.
Load More Replies...It's transparent. It's a rock. And you can eat it. An odd assortment of characteristics.
I thought they were engraved pieces of glass like you place on a light.

Dang! I would pay more money than I legally should for the Kermit one. Just sayin'.
While collecting might be an innate tendency, Dillon believes it's culturally and environmentally shaped. "Nomadic peoples were limited to items that were transferable or storable, but a surplus of food and materials of importance suggests that even from earliest times, people collected," he says.
"Changes in the means of production altered patterns of consumption, and the spoils of conflict and resource control exercised through power created a distinct type of collecting for desirable goods, giving us era-specific records of what was deemed important or valuable to different cultures even before the emergence of museums and galleries."
This Manâs Collection Of Lost Apple Varieties
Do I have any moonshine stories? *Cracks knuckles * My grandpa used to make moonshine and bury the jars in his backyard to hide them from grandma. Next day, she'd have all the kids out there digging around for them, like a demented Easter egg hunt. Also, there was this time my cousin handed me a jar of cloudy liquid and said "Try it! Neighbor Bob made it from the peaches he grew." Spent the entirety of the next two days on the toilet, as an upside down volcano.
"upside down volcano" Why that's the most hilarious description I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I'll be using this from now on thanks!

I'll add his Apple Search site - https://www.applesearch.org/ - because it lists the apple varieties he's found, gives a couple of stories, and though he is taking a break this year, he sells the trees.
Load More Replies...where did he get the Apples on the table then? does he grow them? I'd like to see more back from the old days.

January Sea Glass Haul. I May Have A Problem
I have buckets of this stuff. No idea what to do with any of it but I can't walk past it if I see it on the beach so the "collection" continues to grow.

Like in this picture? It hurts to see, there's three crates on top of the bottom layer of crates!! Why did this father-in-law do it to his own stuff *unless he just collected them to have them, and doesn't care about the music on them*.

The Industrial Revolution led to the emergence of a consumer class that sought goods previously unavailable to them (and created a wealthy class that bought items to reflect their emerging status, sending their offspring on grand tours to polish their education and obtain all sorts of historical artifacts to embellish the family’s legacy).
This rising middle class, in turn, engaged in this most human behavior of acquiring and keeping objects of desire to the point where phrases like "Everyone is a collector" were also born.

Awww my kids would love this. They are currently obsessed with Pokémon and LEGO!
I say, I say, I say! How do you get 100 Pikachu on a bus? Poke-em-on.
It would be cool if these people made a guide for how to put them together.

"Individual case studies or small sample surveys provide some insights, but most of the research is suggestive and leans to inference from market activity," he explains.
"[But] it is sometimes assumed that the primary motivation for investing in artworks or antiques is financial, the belief that such works, by nature of their rarity, represent a distinctive form of investment."
My Wall Mounted Rotary Phone Collection
I mustâve called a thousand tiiiiiimes (from the phones on the wall)
Load More Replies...I have the pink (beige) one left of 'hello' hanging on my kitchen wall...
Load More Replies...Iâve always loved using these phones and have several myself. Just the sound they make when dialing was really satisfying. You can still use them today if you have a phone jack in the wall. You just canât call a business where you have to enter an extension or the old âpress 1 for Englishâ option
We had the rotary dial yellow one when I was a kid. Bought a refurbished unit online & it was c**p. I was really pissed. I still have the perfect spot for it, too.
I remember these phones. We had one on the family farm until 1979 when the Manitoba Telephone truck pulled into the farmyard. It turned out that some neighbors were trying to get ahold of Mom to ask her about making pastries for a community potluck and no one could get ahold of her. It turned out our old rotary phone had died on us. It was replaced with what was considering a state-of-the-art touch tone phone.
Well, one definitely works as we can see the wire. Imagine a party, though, and you make it ring but gave wires from them all and you ask a guest to answer the phone!
My 9-Year-Old Nephew Has Found Over 1500 "Lucky" Four-Leaf Clovers And Keeps Them In A Big Binder
Four leaf clovers are a genetic trait. Find one and there will probably be more in the same area.
35 and never found out. Meanwhile I still remember my late grandma just looking down whenever we went for a walk and finding one instantly.
You never found one because that damn kid found em all :)
Load More Replies...My daughter has always been able to find them very quickly. As a teen, she was diagnosed with autism and we learned that many people on the spectrum have an extremely keen skill for pattern recognition, explaining why she has always been able to find four leaf clovers so easily. Years Ago I Told My Mom That I Liked To Collect Coins. Unfortunately, She Passed Recently, And Upon Cleaning Her House, I Found This
I don't understand why your mother didn't give them to you as she was alive since she knew you were a collector.
After my mom passed I found that she had amassed quite a collection of U.S. Coins, some are quite valuable. I also found 10 ounces of gold.
Don't be surprised if you get contacted by other coin collectors about this!
On the other hand, Dillon says there are innumerable accounts and case studies of individual collectors that explain these people’s actions by appealing to their emotional experiences, insatiable appetites for security, and even erotic ties to material objects, typically rooted in their unsettling earliest life experiences.

MiniDisc is also missing. Although drives were rare.
Load More Replies...It is amazing to think about, especially as for the most part, the smaller the storage medium, the larger the storage capacity.
I remember the floppy discs the size of a vinyl record. Crazy!
If I recall correctly (from a documentary) the Minuteman LGM-30 control computers use the huge floppy (8 inch) from the early 70's and they don't plan to update them - since they're practically virus-proof computers. Air-gapped etc.
"A more contemporary view of people’s relationships to material objects comes from social and cultural studies of consumption by the general public," he explains. "Looking beyond the business analysis of what we buy, some researchers have asked why we buy and how do we treat or use the objects we accumulate over time? In studying these phenomena, people are often conceived as continual consumers on a scale, with collectors at one end and disposers at the other."
"In this paradigm, an individual’s choice of goods is conceived as a reflection of their identity or their desire to be seen by others as part of a group, with their consumption and retention patterns representing a form of expression that signals particular lifestyle values and choices."

Abandoned Collection Of Over 175 Classic Cars In North London
Does this person own them or is visiting a storage unit with them? Either way it would be great if they can be restored and displayed. Beautiful colours!
Apparently they were 'collected' by a businessman who was renting the warehouse on an industrial estate. When it was going to be redeveloped he was persuaded to sell them off.

This Collection Of Rubber Ducks
My daughter left her rubber duckie in a hotel in France when she was 4 but didn't make a fuss about it. Saw one in a shop about the time she was leaving for Uni so popped it in her bags. Her mother said it was "childish" and, when she graduated, threatened to throw it out so it moved to my house. In my bathroom I now have Original RD, Green RD, Nashville RD, Blue RD, British Cop RD, Pirate Captain RD, Pirate Deckhand RD, Pirate Eyepatch RD, Union Jack RD, Keyring RD and Camino de Santiago RD . . . . . . and you what? I don't even LIKE rubber duckies!
My Wife Has Diligently Kept A Journal Everyday Since 2000
Iâve journaled every day for the last 53 years. They take up almost a full bookcase.
I read my old journals once then threw them in the trash and stopped journaling. It was bad enough dealing with my own thoughts the first time around, no need to revisit!
I am not as diligent ( i skip alot of days now ) but mine go back to 1977.
Load More Replies...For a second I thought you meant she collected one journal every day since 2000. Now THAT would be a collection.

Fake IDs Confiscated In A College Town
LMAO At Kinkos one time, some guys came in to color copy their drivers' licenses. But they left the last original on the glass. I had to look up the name in the phone book and ended up talking to the kid's father. He informed me that there would be a come to Jesus meeting as soon as the kid got home. I heard he came in a couple days later with the kid and made him pick up his license - and then cut it up right there with scissors.
From my time as a barkeeper I had a collection of non-valid coins.

Nowadays, many of these use LED lights, but that can be a problem in my part of the country. Because LEDs produce no heat, they don't melt snow that can accumulate on them during a snowstorm. This means city crews have an additional task of clearing them off during storm clean-up.
But they're also not doing many of the jobs that incandescent bulbs require

I always keep the one, after getting a new one fitted "in case of emergency" and there are always subtle differences in the colour.
All These Hair Ties Underneath A Rollercoaster
My stove, washer and dryer get moved every now and then to clear things cats, and occasionally children, have put under them. It's almost always hair ties, the rings from milk jugs and marbles. I have a cat who is obsessed with marbles, but is also obsessed with putting said marbles under appliances, for fun, then complaining that he can't get them back. I have another cat who likes to steal sponges, nerf darts and lego bricks. You'll find most of those under the bed or in your shoes.

I'm concerned about the amount of nails poking through. That's an accident waiting to happen!
That's not too unusual in an unfinished attic. Those sections between the studs, where the cans were dumped, don't have a real floor, just the ceiling from the room below; you can't walk on it, so nobody's going to be in there. (Most people put fiberglass insulation in there, the pink stuff that looks like cotton candy. Maybe the former owner thought the cans would act as insulation?)

Just an FYI, Middle pic shows a grey respirator with green can. During the wars asbestos was used in many of the filtration cans. Wear the mask by all means if that what floats your boat. But please don't try and breath through a canister that's probably filled with asbestos...
Collection Of Ethically Sourced Whiskers From My Cat
My whisker collection got thrown out by "helpful" decluttering assistants.

Their lungs must be gratefull. Vaping is just as bad as smoking tobacco products.
Might be worse, it has just been confirmed that metals are found in vapers' urine samples...

If they are black or grey they are harder to see. Or maybe you vacuum too often.

Thereâs a book of found shopping lists called âMilk Eggs Vodkaâ.
Oooh I love this one, for some reason I find it so intriguing to find someone else's shopping list in your cart/basket at the grocery store

Found Four Bags Of Someoneâs Hotel Soap Collection
Many of our employees travel all over the country and internationally. They bring their unused soaps, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, etc. and we use them to fill wrapped shoeboxes, which we deliver to the local women's shelter.
I used to collect soaps as a child, but let the collecting slip as I got olderâŠ

My Mobile Phone Collection From 1997 To 2009
Does my desk drawer full of the things amount to a 'collection'? If so I suspect there are many more collectors out there than previously thought.
Well, the people who pick up the trash are called "garbage collectors", so the term is pretty elastic.

Very interesting article, It makes me think, 'At what point does collecting become hoarding?' 🤔
When I think of hoarding I think of people who have a hard time of letting go of things. It usually includes newspapers, trash, old discarded items that others didnt want. A collector usually doesnt get to the point in their collection when they are living in filth.

Lee, on the boredpanda website, there should be a button called 'add post'. Click that button. You can then write about your collection and include pictures. 🙂

I collect cat hair. Don't worry, it's freely donated.
I should start a whistle collection. I had a good and still have a pretty good collection even if its small. Unfortunately my "whoosh" whistle I had since my grade school days broke. I'll probably have to find a new one if they still make them. Some day I would like a slide whistle. I do have this old bird whistle that makes pleasant bird sounds when you blow into it that is after you have put in a little water.
Interesting collections, but after years doing estate sales all I see is stuff that won't mean anything to anyone else and will be disposed of one way or another after the collector is gone.
Yep which is why I'm doing a death cleaning before we move out of this house. Been here 20+ years.
Load More Replies...I have three things I've been collecting, religiously, since I was little. I have a shoelace collection (mostly unused but a couple that were and I just liked the design) that numbers somewhere north of 650 at this point. I have a fast food toy collection-all unopened-that numbers somewhere in the range of 600. It would have more but I've given a ton away, use as stocking stuffers, easter basket fillers, rewards, prizes at parties, etc... I also have a machine toy collection-the machines you see, or used to in some places, at grocery stores, arcades, etc...That collection is massive and totals well over 7,000, as I've been collecting it since I was about 4-ish. I've only tapped into that collection a few times over the years. I still collect all three things too. My purse currently has two pairs of shoelaces, two unopened fast food toys, three little bubbles with toys and two mini fidget spinners. You never know when you'll see a kid who needs a smile, or just get bored yourself, lol.
