Dr. Andrew Dillon, who is a V.M. Daniel Regents Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, says that once humans gathered more resources than they immediately needed, they were able to break out of the continual hunting mode and start to trade.

Combined with our abilities to plan and count, collecting emerges as a natural disposition that is subject to the influencing forces of economics, social structures, education, fashion, and personal history.

"In treating collecting as routine, we can view the range of collecting behaviors as expressions which might vary across layers but reflect the shared basis of human motivations underlying our emotions, identity, value, and desire for connection," Dillon explains.

While collecting might be an innate tendency, Dillon believes it's culturally and environmentally shaped. "Nomadic peoples were limited to items that were transferable or storable, but a surplus of food and materials of importance suggests that even from earliest times, people collected," he says.

"Changes in the means of production altered patterns of consumption, and the spoils of conflict and resource control exercised through power created a distinct type of collecting for desirable goods, giving us era-specific records of what was deemed important or valuable to different cultures even before the emergence of museums and galleries."

Do I have any moonshine stories? *Cracks knuckles * My grandpa used to make moonshine and bury the jars in his backyard to hide them from grandma. Next day, she'd have all the kids out there digging around for them, like a demented Easter egg hunt. Also, there was this time my cousin handed me a jar of cloudy liquid and said "Try it! Neighbor Bob made it from the peaches he grew." Spent the entirety of the next two days on the toilet, as an upside down volcano.

In more recent times, the cabinet of curiosities emerges around the discovery of the Americas and the expansion of people's understanding of place and space, tying collecting to self-presentation of worldliness and forward-thinking.

The Industrial Revolution led to the emergence of a consumer class that sought goods previously unavailable to them (and created a wealthy class that bought items to reflect their emerging status, sending their offspring on grand tours to polish their education and obtain all sorts of historical artifacts to embellish the family’s legacy).

This rising middle class, in turn, engaged in this most human behavior of acquiring and keeping objects of desire to the point where phrases like "Everyone is a collector" were also born.

However, as collecting is increasingly recognized as widespread, Dillon says we still have little data on people's motivations, their reasons, and self-explanations for their hobby.

"Individual case studies or small sample surveys provide some insights, but most of the research is suggestive and leans to inference from market activity," he explains.

"[But] it is sometimes assumed that the primary motivation for investing in artworks or antiques is financial, the belief that such works, by nature of their rarity, represent a distinctive form of investment."

I’ve always loved using these phones and have several myself. Just the sound they make when dialing was really satisfying. You can still use them today if you have a phone jack in the wall. You just can’t call a business where you have to enter an extension or the old “press 1 for English” option

I remember these phones. We had one on the family farm until 1979 when the Manitoba Telephone truck pulled into the farmyard. It turned out that some neighbors were trying to get ahold of Mom to ask her about making pastries for a community potluck and no one could get ahold of her. It turned out our old rotary phone had died on us. It was replaced with what was considering a state-of-the-art touch tone phone.

Well, one definitely works as we can see the wire. Imagine a party, though, and you make it ring but gave wires from them all and you ask a guest to answer the phone!

My daughter has always been able to find them very quickly. As a teen, she was diagnosed with autism and we learned that many people on the spectrum have an extremely keen skill for pattern recognition, explaining why she has always been able to find four leaf clovers so easily. This skill can be quite useful, leading a government agency to start a program to recruit people with autism due to pattern recognition skills. https://www.nga.mil/news/NGA_launches_neurodiversity_pilot.html

There is, of course, a monetary consideration in major purchasing decisions, but financial returns might be a primary motivation for only a minority or niche group of collectors.

Depending on which study you look at, there's some evidence that the share of collectors who are in for an investment or possible profit can be lower than 10%

From my home on the Kent coast (UK) to London Victoria railway station is about 65 miles. Going up to see my daughter one weekend by train and, after about 20 miles suddenly realised there were a LOT of footballs that had been kicked over the fence. Started counting and got to 27 plus one basketball before we reached the terminus.

"A more contemporary view of people’s relationships to material objects comes from social and cultural studies of consumption by the general public," he explains. "Looking beyond the business analysis of what we buy, some researchers have asked why we buy and how do we treat or use the objects we accumulate over time? In studying these phenomena, people are often conceived as continual consumers on a scale, with collectors at one end and disposers at the other."

"In this paradigm, an individual’s choice of goods is conceived as a reflection of their identity or their desire to be seen by others as part of a group, with their consumption and retention patterns representing a form of expression that signals particular lifestyle values and choices."

We called them Shell track suits. We used to put neon green lace in one trainer and orange in the other and sometimes wore a bum bag with it. We thought we were so stylish and you couldn't tell us any different!

Apparently they were 'collected' by a businessman who was renting the warehouse on an industrial estate. When it was going to be redeveloped he was persuaded to sell them off.

A million, maybe. Aside from the KĂŒbelwagen, there’s nothing really rare or special there. Interesting, sure. But unless they’re in way better condition under that grime than it seems, the majority of them would cost more to restore than they’d be worth after restoration.

My daughter left her rubber duckie in a hotel in France when she was 4 but didn't make a fuss about it. Saw one in a shop about the time she was leaving for Uni so popped it in her bags. Her mother said it was "childish" and, when she graduated, threatened to throw it out so it moved to my house. In my bathroom I now have Original RD, Green RD, Nashville RD, Blue RD, British Cop RD, Pirate Captain RD, Pirate Deckhand RD, Pirate Eyepatch RD, Union Jack RD, Keyring RD and Camino de Santiago RD . . . . . . and you what? I don't even LIKE rubber duckies!

LMAO At Kinkos one time, some guys came in to color copy their drivers' licenses. But they left the last original on the glass. I had to look up the name in the phone book and ended up talking to the kid's father. He informed me that there would be a come to Jesus meeting as soon as the kid got home. I heard he came in a couple days later with the kid and made him pick up his license - and then cut it up right there with scissors.

Nowadays, many of these use LED lights, but that can be a problem in my part of the country. Because LEDs produce no heat, they don't melt snow that can accumulate on them during a snowstorm. This means city crews have an additional task of clearing them off during storm clean-up.

I lost my right eye to Retinoblastoma at 6 weeks of age (now in my 50's). My Mum says my first artificial eye iris colour was green. My eye colour now is really dark brown. I always keep the one, after getting a new one fitted "in case of emergency" and there are always subtle differences in the colour.

My stove, washer and dryer get moved every now and then to clear things cats, and occasionally children, have put under them. It's almost always hair ties, the rings from milk jugs and marbles. I have a cat who is obsessed with marbles, but is also obsessed with putting said marbles under appliances, for fun, then complaining that he can't get them back. I have another cat who likes to steal sponges, nerf darts and lego bricks. You'll find most of those under the bed or in your shoes.

Aww the photos! My grandma used to keep her grandkids photos inside her novels. She used to absentmindedly reread the same books over and over again and she would perk up upon discovering a previously stored photo inside (she probably didn’t recall seeing the photos before). We found so many photos when tidying up her books after she passed away.

That's not too unusual in an unfinished attic. Those sections between the studs, where the cans were dumped, don't have a real floor, just the ceiling from the room below; you can't walk on it, so nobody's going to be in there. (Most people put fiberglass insulation in there, the pink stuff that looks like cotton candy. Maybe the former owner thought the cans would act as insulation?)
