40 Random And Fascinating Facts About Our World You Might Not Have Heard Of, By UberFacts
UberFacts says it shares "the most unimportant things you'll never need to know" and I have to admit, that's a pretty accurate description of its content. Launched in 2009, the Internet project provides people with random facts on all kinds of topics.
From the number of janitors in the US with PhDs to the genius way Swedes protested their government classifying homosexuality as an illness, these titbits of information will make you an expert on trivia in no time. So grab yourself some broccoli (random fact: the vegetable is rich in vitamin K, and a few studies in older adults have linked a higher vitamin K intake to better memory), continue scrolling, and upvote your favorite entries!

As it turns out, there are some biological reasons behind people's desire to "store" trivia in their brain and the rush of excitement they feel when they get the chance to use it. According to psychologist John Kounios Ph.D., it's a lot like playing roulette, too.
"You get a rush or a neuroreward signal or a dopamine burst from winning," the professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in applied cognitive and brain sciences at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, told Healthline. "I think whenever you're challenged with a trivia question and you happen to know it, you get a rush. It's sort of like gambling."
He said the benefits can also be similar to those of playing video games. However, unlike gambling and video games, trivia is generally not a potentially dangerous habit, Kounios said.
"I don't think there are any pitfalls. Like anything else that's fun, it takes up time."
Moreover, retaining information about things we're interested in can be like an exercise for the frontal cortex as the brain ages.
"That's the first thing to go with injury or with age if we don't use it," Deborah Stokes, Ph.D., L.P.C., B.C.N., a psychologist in Virginia who focuses on neurotherapy, said.
So there you have it, folks. Browsing trivia isn't a waste of time. It's a mental workout!
Smart man, too bad most politicians want to hold onto many archaic laws.
Unfortunately, people with addictions are not thinking with their brains, despite all the obvious benefits of quitting.
Load More Replies...Smoke breaks accumulate the equivalent of six full days per year? So us non-smokers are doing six more days’ worth of work than smokers? Yeah, we ought to earn SOMETHING for for all that extra work. Let’s hope this idea crosses the Pacific to the US.
I'm gonna make (maybe) a stupid question. How is it that people can go to breaks whenever they want? Depending on how many hours I work I have a certain amount of time for break... and so was in every job I had...
In every place I have worked smokers are free to go out whenever they needed as long as they don't abuse the privilege. Here legally employers are required to give a lunch break and two short breaks to employees, but as long as as person's job is being done no one cares if you go out more often. A lot of non-smokers (like me) will sometimes join too for a coffee while the others have their smoke break. The only exceptions were a couple of places that had shifts and scheduled breaks for everyone.
Load More Replies...This is amazing! Yes US companies should do the same but also offer free drinks for the non-coffee drinkers too.
Where I work, you're not allowed to smoke on the campus inside or outside. You have to smoke after work.
If only my US company did this..... I'm one of the very few who do not take 2 hours a day smoking.
As a former smoker I estimate I spent no more than 15 minutes per workday smoking. That's 0,25 hours per day x 22 workdays a month x 12 months in a year / 8 hours in a workday smoking = OVER 8 F***ING WORKDAYS A YEAR. My guilt is only mitigated by the fact I'm allowed at least a 20 minute break per day, which I don't use much.
I disagree on this. If you only take 5 breaks or so, they're very good to bond with your co-workers. If you're alone, you get a better view on the problems you need to solve. At least I do. Of course, a walk would do the same, but takes longer.
I wouldn't be opposed to allowing non-smokers the same amount of "fresh air" time. I worked at a place that allowed the smokers a 20 min break every 2 hours or so, but I got yelled at for getting up too often to refill my water. (5 minutes every hour or two) It's just a weird culture allowance.
Load More Replies...Aren't smoke breaks just part of their normal break times. It was when I worked!! Just because you smoked didn't mean you got extra breaks.
As a smoker that follows break rules, this isn't right. I only take my 2 allotted breaks and my lunch break. Not all smokers abuse breaks.
I worked with a guy who literally took 10 or so minutes out of EACH hour all day long. Yeah, I thin this is more than fair.
This seems to me to be more about insurance than anything. Even when working 12 hour days as an only chef, or working similar hours in stores and delivery, I might be able to sneak in one cigarette, and that's just to give myself five minutes break when I'm entitled to an hour. So, just because someone smokes doesn't mean that they're slacking. It might partly be a consequence of being too diligent. So, I call bullshit on this one and would sooner assume that they're trying to get people to stop smoking so they don't have to pay as much for insurance.
this s**t aint about health...when you do not allow your personel to take breaks....s**t allow people to take during the workday....they need them even when they think they dont and think they are better people/better workers because they dont take them....then the only sane people who acknowledeg the benefit of breakes....smokers gets punished. tell everybody to take a break....tell smokers to try one without smoking😃
As a smoker, I am on board with this. Particularly as a manager, I would often invite one of my non smoking employees to come sit with me, or just take 5 whenever they felt it was appropriate.
Nevermind Trump making me miss Barack Obama, he even makes me pine for the days when GW Bush was in power. George and Michelle's easy-going friendship demonstrates that democrats and republicans are not mortal enemies, as Trump would have you believe. A good leader unites his countrymen, not divides them like der Drumpf.
I like that he was that confident in his ability to turn her off that he took his stalker out to dinner
Not calling out either side here because i completely support peoples right to protest. But 7% of thousands of protests can still do quite a lot of damage and at least 25 people have died from protests / political unrest.
If dreams are that medically reliable, the evil purple minion inside me should be born soon
Trump is an idiot.......Wow who the F**K knew? Damn this honesty just spills out of my mouth.....
There are more terrorist attacks/threats on US home soil than terrorist threats/attacks from other countries. This is why their gun laws are pathetic, you are more likely to be accidentally shot by your own gun than by a terrorist from another country.
Goes to show that just because someone is a janitor doesn’t mean they aren’t educated and also just because you have a PHD doesn’t mean you will get a job in that field. I am curious to know how many refugees also have PHD’s that aren’t recognised in their new home.
I too, am hated because of my superior plumbing skills 😞. I feel you Mario.
That’s okay the US voting system is flawed anyway, some peoples votes don’t even count because of the state they live in.

Maybe posts that were revealed to not actually be "facts" were removed? (I only read them now, though, so I don't know what posts disappeared.)

Every clinical study to get a new drug on the market involved a lot of statistics. To dismiss Quetelet's work because he was not a doctor of medicine shows a misunderstanding of how science works. He was working on obesity and population growth and developped this index as a growth marker, not an health marker. It was adopted as an health marker years after some studies in the 60's showed its reliability.
