Almost every product you can imagine arrives at a shop or your front door in some form of packaging (with additional layers added during transport and delivery).

The type and purpose of this container can vary tremendously, from a simple cloth bag to an elaborate gift box with laser-cut foam inlays.

However, if given enough thought, all of them can stand out from their competitors. And the subreddit r/PackagingDesign has proof. With 6.1k members, it's not the biggest community on the platform, but since its inception in 2013, among other types of content, these folks have shared plenty of examples of aesthetics blending perfectly with functionality. Here are some of the best ones.

Sort of a weird combination (hair/food) but it's nice to see packaging that finds a way to be eye catching in a cute, simplistic way instead of wit lies / false claims.

I do love when food packaging goes the extra mile. Really helps kitchen time feel less chorey. This is why my kitchen is filled with fun and colourful dishes. ANYTHING to help the chores.

It's all automated these days. The cats go into a box and find themselves in a chute with a conveyor belt. A catnip mist and little dancing laser lights keep them distracted as the milking machines attach. Then at the far end there is a treat. Most of the cats actually like the process.

I'm a honey enthusiast, and two things I don't care for, fancy packaging and lousy honey. My husband just got me some gallberry honey from GA and it's my fav. Costco has carried some really great honeys, but they've carried a lot of garbage, too. Wild berry honey is great from the Pacific area and South, but terrible from the Midwest and mediocre from the northeast. It's great from western Canada but mediocre from eastern Canada. Any honey that's just labeled " honey" is likely overproccessed and flavorless. If it gives you heartburn, it's not good honey. There's my rule of thumbs!

FYI: don’t buy any honey that says: “made in: (any South American country)” - a quick google search will explain but basically any honey that says, for eg: made in: Brazil - is actually made in China, DOES NOT CONTAIN ALL 100% HONEY (usually has other added ingredients like corn syrup) then shipped to a South American country and then distributed from there. Next time you’re at the grocery store look at the back of all the honey brands and there is a surprisingly large amount made in South American countries, why is that? Bc it all comes from China & they are able to sell it for cheaper than the made in US or made locally brands.

I found the description, this was a sampler with a bunch of different scents! "The L'Orange Variée perfume presentation, was a half peeled orange made up of painted composition which held 8 glass bottles in the shape of realistically molded orange segments, each with its own label, sealed with cork and wax stoppers. Each bottle was held in place by having the neck inserted into a metal frame concealed inside the simulated orange peel. The scents included were: Chypre, Amber, Heliotrope, Rose, Jessamine, Mayflower, Mimosa, Muguet, Les Lilas, Violette. "

Because that's the "Best By" date. It's an arbitrary date. It's put there so you will throw food away and buy more. There is no way to tell when food actually expires.

I doubt that’s applicable as such. A design that puts attention or education to trusting your senses to tell if it’s still good to go may be more effective. It’s more design for the sake it imo

Probably not a bag of coffee since the correct end has a distinctive design but other products they absolutely would. Packaging that has a reclosable design is usually useless after they open it. 😖

In all seriousness, counting on people to disassemble their garbage in order to properly recycle isn't very effective. A cute little samurai might help, but...

I am chuckling at the blue bin in the background that appears to have paper and plastic in the same bin. (which I assume gets sorted later but still amusing given what the cup says)

In Abbotsford BC, up until recently they collected recycling mixed & sort it at the recycling center. I'm not sure why.

It's terrible that you got downvoted for trying to learn. Ramen aka "instant noodle" is a thin , densely packed dry noodle that you can eat very quickly after pouring hot water on it. It's known, at least where I live, as being a relatively inexpensive meal.

Must not be USA. They prominently list the actual wattage of a CFL instead of the incandescent bulb equivalent wattage. American packaging used power consumption (60W / 100W) as an indicator for light output (lumens) for so many years, most of the packaging still lists as like - "60 watt equivalent"

There's a reason that we are still using the same decades olfd basic design of egg box in the UK - it works. Those are going to break the moment any of your other shopping touches the side of them.

I got curious about whether this new design was going to catch on so I started seeing if any other bottle shop was selling it. Every time the response from the shop assistant was the same: "No, but we do have this cardboard bottle of gin!"

In the US we recycle 3.1 million tons of glass a year and produce 12.3, so about 25% of all glass produced is using recycled glass. It's mostly a factor of how good we are a recycling, and we only recycle about 30% of all glass made. So more things could be made using recycled glass, we would just have to recycle more.

Gin isn't as cutthroat yet as vodka or tequila. For those 2, the slightest edge in the market over your competitor can be the difference between 2 and 20 min dollars. Vodka doesn't all taste like rubbing alcohol, believe it or not it can be creamy, toasty, literally as clean and smooth as water; some finish with a hint of white pepper, have dominant black pepper tones, but most of them taste like sh!t. And when you're at a club, you're really not sipping finer vodka. You're mixing it! With the 1000 vodkas out there that you're gonna mix with cranberry, whatever other juice, olive juice, etc, you really think you're gonna remember a name? Nuuupe. But, you'll remember a bottle shaped like a rain drop. A bottle shaped like a hexagon, a skull, a circle, a triangle- and that's your edge. You take a bottle to a party, every single person there is gonna want to taste the shiny new cool looking bottle of liquor. (And many will swear it's the best they've ever had.)

    Trash Panda 🦝
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Next you get it placed at 1 club in the market. Hire 4 or 5 beautiful girls to walk around with the bottle. They WILL get stopped and asked about it. "It's amazing. It sells itself." By the end of the night, they've sold every bottle. The next day 50 different people hit up local liquor stores looking for it, but it's not on shelves yet. The stores start to ask their liquor reps for it. Who carries it?! I've had 20 ppl come in and ask for it! Nobody remembers what it's called, but the bottle is shaped like a snow cone (whatever). And that's it. The bottle shape takes up twice the space, so you knock a comp off right there. Few months time, the company will have the market saturated with press and social media. So in so endorses it, and up and coming artist sings about it. Boom. That's the edge a unique bottle will give you. For vodka and tequila, the bottle's that important. It's all about that marketing edge.

Nope. These are "beschuit", not biscuits, common in NL. It is some sort of dried white bread. Eaten at breakfast with all sorts of toppings and traditionally served after a baby is born, with either blue or pink anisseed sprinkles. The notch is there to leave space for the lifter in the cans they should be stored in, to prevent them loosing their crispiness. Before this notch was introduced, it was a fight get everything fitted in the can without breaking them

This is so much worse than glass bottles... I don't mean only because the flavor would possibly be extremely terrible, but also environmentally. This can't be reused, so it's just wasteful. Glass bottles can be washed and reused up to 40 times or so, or recycled. Here in Sweden, most glass is recycled by the government, and breweries also use old bottles after washing them. I'm a home brewer and I also reuse bottles instead of buying new ones. Using other materials is completely unnecessary... We don't have to replace glass with natural materials... 🤦‍♀️

To be fair, it seems a lot of people outside the US don't use dryers as much as we do, opting instead for the more eco-friendly option of hanging their clothes to dry. Though I do use my dryer, especially for sheets and towels, and I've never had an issue with things being soft. I don't use liquid fabric softener, dryer sheets, or dryer balls.

I love how there was a period of time when American beers would advertise themselves as the "coldest" beer. Isn't that more about how, and for how long, it is chilled? If you need the beer to be so cold as to freeze my taste buds to make it palatable, I don't think I want it.

It's the only beer co that makes it's beer without creating nitrosamines, a known carcinogen. Many years ago the US ordered beer companies to change the way they made beer to stop that but was given 5 yrs to modify their plants, etc. - their very effective lobbing effort has stalled that from happening to this day. So STILL, the ONLY beer without nitrosamines is COORS!!!!! .

For years, I have used a standard cardboard 4-cup carrier inside a plastic handled bag (it lasts a very long time). The carrier is strong, the bag sides keep the cups upright, and the bag handles allow one-handed carrying without risk of spills. Kept it in my car for group orders.

All 3 styles of boxes have the same round brown half circle in that area of their respective boxes, so any boxes line up next to each other will work.

As someone with a retail background the shelf placement is driving me crazy cuz the tags are supposed to line up with the left side of the box. I hope the person who took the time to do this wasn’t made to redo it. But it’s Walmart so probably not

Because it’s actually kind of neat sometimes to have a physical copy of something in your hand. That was true with the original Polaroids and it’s still true now.

It’s Not Often That I Literally Stop And Stare In Awe At A Product In The Supermarket

It’s Not Often That I Literally Stop And Stare In Awe At A Product In The Supermarket

Barila have replaced the plastic film bags with beautiful new plastic free cartons.
The first thing to point out is that this new carton format immediately creates a unique point of difference from what is a ‘bag heavy’ section. A great way to stand out from the competition.
This new, large canvas have given them the perfect opportunity to focus on simplicity and elegance, which they’ve done to great effect.
The retro design is a nod towards 60’s café culture and utilises simplistic, retro illustration to make up for the lack of window.
The whole design is beautifully balanced with oodles of negative space to draw the eye into the centre of the pack. A moment of calm on a very, very busy fixture,
Even the SRP nestles the on-pack communication, snuggly.
It’s a fantastic lesson in “less is more“. A simple clutter free approach will always grab consumers attention.

My first factory job (1976) was in a box factory. We designed and manufactured hundreds of styles of packaging. Sadly, it went out of style and became obsolete, until the last 10 or so years. Now folks are "inventing" styles of packaging that we used 50 years ago. "What's old is new" I guess.
