Why Is Norway So Good At Winter Olympics?
All my mind's eye sees when I think about beach volleyball in Norway, is people in snowsuits and moon boots, wrapped up to the eyebrows, waddling down to the beach, which has been plowed just for the game. And matching pompom hats and mittens in team colors.
We are intensely much outdoors as often as humanly possible. So those two months of sunshine we spend at the beach
Well they do have saunas, so the beach volleyball shouldn't be that much of a stretch.
Now I imagine people playing beach volleyball in the sauna, which is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my head.
Load More Replies...They do so well in Winter Olympics because in the US all we are allowed to see are the sports that the US athletes are good at. I never knew They even had the Ski/shooting event until we only had Canadian TV. much better coverage than the US.
Americans are couch potatoes- some of us, quite literally. From experience, Norwegians could go hiking with their family for two hours as soon as they get up and never hear a single complaint.

The actual secret is… gas. Norway earns a shitload of money out of natural ressources and this wealth is equally shared (unlike the confiscation that happens in the Gulf countries). Easier to be happy when you’re rich and everything is paid for.
It has nothing to do with oil. Venezuela, Nigeria, Saudia, they all have tons of oil, but suck. Phillipines, Indonesia have fish, Mali has so much gold, Congo has a lot of valuable minerals- and they suck. Norway ONLY got wealthy because of social politics. I met a super rich guy one, who got rich in the 60's/70's (not because of oil). He said he LOVED paying taxes, and wished they were higher- because the money goes to hospitals, schools, poor people, infrastructure. Nowadays, the rich people just move to Switzerland and don't give a s**t about others. So wealth divide is growing and Norway is actually not that happy anymore.
Load More Replies...Finland has been the happiest country in the world for several years in a row. The same reasons apply.
I'd be happy too if I lived in a country where there were no Republicans.
Still always gotta be cautious about those happiness rates. Norway has a much higher suicide rate than Mexico
What most middle class and (damn near) all lower class Americans stress about, most of Scandinavia does not. Education, heath insurance, income, transportation... These are not things 98% of them never have to stress about. Can you only imagine the happiness you'd find/have if those stresses were removed from your life?
As much as I love Norway I would not call it's health-care free at all. I lived there 10 years ago and just to see GP was £25, and that was A- LOT from my au-pair income.
Agreed....a bit stiff on an au pair's salary. We have what's considered top-of-the line insurance and we still pay $30 (US) a visit. What doesn't happen in Norway is going into bankruptcy to get, for example, life-saving health care. THAT happens in the US with depressing frequency.

Social Democracy. It’s different. A strong free market with a good social welfare net.
Load More Replies...Don't listen to mp Arizona. Whether it's a joke or not, Norway is awesome. Every country in the world except the United States, has fairly good social programs AND national health care. We suck, especially with the jerks in congress who don't want us to have what they have. What they have is some of the best health care, not just in the country, but in the world.

Norway is known as one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, where people, nature, and animals all live in harmony. To find out more about what it’s like, we spoke with Stian Samuelsen, a nature photographer based in what he calls “the top of Europe, at 70° 11' 57''N,” in the subarctic part of Norway.
Stian is inspired by the raw nature around him, the spectacular Varanger peninsula, the inland, and the woods of Pasvik. Through the photographs, Stian tries to show the rest of the world the spectacular beauty of the northern lights and the midnight sun.

Most children are fluent. The movies aren't dubbed, the TV shows aren't dubbed, etc. They listen to English speaking music, etc. The youngest Swede I met completely fluent in English was 7. No BS.

“My interest in photography started in my first real job when I worked with printing plates and film at a printing company in Alta in the late '90s. I was around great photographers and looked at their great works, and I remember I wanted to be as good as them. But, my job paid little, so I decided to change direction and got a job with my father-in-law, as a truck driver, and that is what I did for the next 20 years, and still partly do,” Stian recounted.

My boyfriend and I took the Flåmsbana last year in spring up into the mountains and back down. We drove 3 hours in the morning from his uncles house to visit Flåm and drove back in the evening. It was totally worth it. It was so breathtaking, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to.

Oh the irony. She blames immigrants and yet she’s immigrating to Norway? Oh man… how does one attain this level of stupidity?
Send her over here to Australia. We can guarantee she'll never be seen again.
She will make the average IQ of Norway drop by 20 points if you let her in, please don't.
Imagine fleeing the horrible, horrible "Socialism" of America, and choosing Norway as your refuge.
"Lost to the immigrants" She says, as she's literally IMMIGRATING! Send to her Russia - the US doesn't want her back either.
If American conservatives really want to leave (yes please) they should take their Putin loving a*ses over to Russia.
On behalf of the Americans - I am so sorry and have no f*in clue what she was thinking.
In 2016, the photographer was going through a difficult time. “I suffered from serious depression, and things were pretty bad. A good pal of mine, who is a photographer, picked me up, took me out on photography trips, and inspired me to regain the interest that had been slowly gone over the years.”
Stian said it changed when he was reminded of his great talent for photography and decided to get his first DSLR, a Canon 760d. “And suddenly I got a hobby that I really enjoyed, and at the same time I was able to get out in nature and enjoy the beauty that surrounded me.”

We decided those things before we found the oil Also, most of the oil money is plowed back into investments all over the globe. There is a list of things that the oil fund is not allowed to invest in, mostly illegal and immoral things, and a list of things that are recommended, like research into green energy. I think it is something like 3% that is used to pay for things each year, there was a huge debate over how much extra we should spent to help out after covid
i have that in America. excellent health care, the job pays for my education, and i actually get 2 months of vacation. the only thing i don't get is a year parental leave. honesty wouldn't want that anyway.
This Is What It Feels Like As An American Who Has Spent Time In Norway
Norway gets $130 billion a year in oil revenue for a country of 5 million people. They can afford throw a lot of cash at social programs!
It's not a Socialist country. It's a Social Democratic country. So the comment that currently has 6 downvotes ("None of the Scandinavian countries are socialist") is factual. I should know, as I'm Norwegian myself.
I think the US is the only developed nation to not have strong welfare programs. And our politicians say that other places are sh*t hole countries.
Just read another study that stated any attempt to refute a conspiracy theory (socialism is bad) is a waste of time. If what the experts are saying is true, it's looking worse for the future.
Old guy probably, collects Social Security, Medicare and has been on unemployment most of his miserable life. We feel'n sorry for him.

The American Dream
I would commit a crime just to be sent to prison in Norway. Ridiculous how a prison treats it's inmates better than America treats it's citizens.
I think that the wrong way round… it’s ridiculous how US treats its citizens worse than other countries treat their prisoners

Every time I see that picture, I ask myself: Are they in some 70s band, the guy on the right is holding and air guitar.
I don’t think it’s making fun of the people, but the systems that they have to live under, and extortionate healthcare/eduction costs.
Load More Replies...Well - it's much better to rehabilitate the prisoners n stead of treating them badly. If not they'll return to prison again and again and what's the point of that? It's more economical when they can return to society, get a job and pay taxes 👍
America has chosen to be a punitive country. Ss so we will always have more violent and heinous crimes than the more advanced civilizations.
I've seen photos of their prison cells, and they are 100% nicer than most homeless shelters and urban apartments in the US.
People talk about prisons in Norway, but what they actually mean is Halden prison. The rest of our prisons are much more ordinary.
This isn't remotely true and anyone who believes it is incredibly stupid. freedom is far better than prison in any capacity. If you don't see that, then you are truly an idiot.
"anyone who believes it is incredibly stupid" and "If you don't see that, then you are truly an idiot" are statements that make YOU an idiot. If somebody doesn't know something or doesn't "see" something, probably due to missing foregoing education, be it on specific topics or in general, doesn't make them stupid, just uneducated.
Load More Replies...Being in nature, Stian realized, had a healing power on him. “Slowly, my head started getting better, focusing on something other than the bad things in life. And now I am a semi-pro photographer, working with what I enjoy the most, nature, and capturing it,” he told us.
More than anything, Stian enjoys the calmness in nature, the sounds, “whether it’s the birds or waves, or wind.” He added that “being outside with a campfire, under the northern lights is just magic for my soul.”
The American Education System Strikes Again!
I ran into this after showing photos of my trip to Wisconsin. Stoughton, WI has a large Norwegian population, so there are plenty of flags, particularly on their Main street. When I got back home, I was showing the pictures to co-workers, and one of them said “Ugh, they are so racist there.” I just glared at her and said, “That is the flag of Norway, you ignorant troll” 🙄🙄. Btw, Wisconsin is gorgeous & I absolutely love the people. Moving there for retirement is definitely being discussed.
I live outside of Green Bay, north Wisconsin is amazing especially up by Stoughton :) Most of us are of Scandinavian descent, my great grandpa came here in 1898 on a ship from Norway. Whenever I meet a visitor they are amazed how friendly everyone is. I've been surprised when travelling outside the state that people don't talk in store lines or say hi when passing on a sidewalk
Load More Replies...there are so many things wrong with that statement. Let's get the obvious out of the way. They misspelled Confederate. also that's not how the lines cross on the Confederate flag they are diagonal not across the way a Norwegian flag is. And of course people are f****** dumb. Also the American education system is not responsible for all idiots. They teach him the correct thing but somehow it doesn't translate.
Anyway
He's a vile man who will say anything for attention, no matter how horrible, misogynistic or racist. He's a multimillionaire many times over but pretends to be an 'ordinary bloke' despite being born into money. He disregards UK law at wver turn and has ruined the village where his farm is located. Yuk. Just yuk. Being charismatic does not excuse being a twotwaffle
Load More Replies...Norway also has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world, with only 20% of inmates returning after 5 years. That's what happens when you focus on rehabilitating inmates instead of money. 2/3 of all inmates in prison in the U.S. weren't actually convicted. There are also those for profit prisons that shouldn't exist. Edit: Thank you Tim for correcting me.
So......What crimes do I need to be committed? (Asking for a friend)
They genuinely do believe in rehabilitation. If I'm not mistaken they have the lowest recidivism rate in the world. Top 3 for sure.
Yep, and with so many things going 100% remote after COVID- there’s no reason why some can’t get college degrees and real jobs that actually pay. Right now, college degree offerings are limited to specific “prisoner programs” and their $0.30 per hour jobs are a joke.

Long daylight hours in the summer, communities that live with nature instead of against it, and some of the best natural scenery in the world. A photographer’s paradise.
hmm knowing what norway's seasons are like I'm going to guess this was midday. jk
On the other hand, Stian believes that many people in Norway are growing more distant from nature than the previous generations. “But it might just be that social media is telling a false story,” he added.
Stian explained that at least in his part of Norway, being out in nature is a very common thing to do. “The hunt and fishing culture is strong up here in the north. Being outside, using nature is a part of our culture, especially in the Sami community.”
This Country Is Safe
Despite there only being 5.4 million people in Norway, 12 million doses of the vaccine have been administered, with at least 80% of the population receiving one dose. Only 5000 deaths out of all those people, this entire time.

It's really not that hard. 😁 They don't conjugate their verbs. Same tense for I, you, he, she, one, they, them, all the way down. And they put the word 'the' the end of the word. We say, THE cat, . They say kattEN, catTHE. Their nouns are either "masculine", "feminine", and sometimes (kinda rarely), neutral. But that's a hell of a lot easier to remember than the conjugation of 5000 different verbs, lol. Pronunciation, or as I like to call it, learning how to sing the language, will come naturally. Before long you'll start dreaming in Norwegian. After that, you'll never forget it. 😁
I'm a Swede and can understand "normal" Norwegian (Riksmål) with little or no trouble. Nynorsk or Bokmål; not so much.
I don't have a Norwegian example of how radically different the dialects are, but Finnish is a single language and the west and east dialects can't agree on wether "itikka" means cow or mosquito and there are actually two Norwegian languages so the difference must be greater than that... So it's really not just a simple issue of pronunciation
Ahh Finnish, the hardest language in the world to learn. I have a lot of family in Espoo, and thank God they speak swedish, lol. We all wish the great grandparents had continued to speak Finnish when they came over. Grandma Jackson grew up not being able to speak to her older brothers who couldn't come over when her parents did... But her mom and dad said America was their new home and English was their new language. When I lived in Sweden one of the 4 channels split Finnish news and then kicked back to Swedish. I'd watch and listen to those news casters speak and would just be in awe that a 20 letter word with 16 vowels could be pronounced like that. Fascinating language, for sure.

Very Important Advice For Visitors
This is me! Does this mean I'm Norwegian? Every day, there's a knock on my door to let me know they haven't seen me and was wondering if I'm alright. Sweet right? Not really. Three years in, and I still can't convince my neighbors I chose to live alone. I like being alone. And horror of horrors, I will be alone for all the holidays by preference. Had I known, I would've studied Norwegian and escaped.
So how the hell do you ever meet anyone new? Work? How boring! Broader your horizons & try having a conversation with a stranger. You may just be surprised 😱
This sounds perfect. And no one thinks it’s weird for you to be doing this. That makes it so much more comfortable.
We also asked Stian what was his most memorable moment while taking pictures in nature. “It was in the summer when we had this whale invasion in the varangerfjord. I saw these fountains blown by tens of humpback whales and fin whales. I watched them feeding and jumping out of the water, just 100 meters from the shoreline. That must be the most memorable moment for me.”

What Ever Makes You Happy Man
Oh, the horror of free healthcare and school, low crime rates, religion that doesn't interact with the government in any way, good wealth distribution, and good housing market.
It's almost as if these things actually represent freedom a lot more than the freedom to exploit does...
Load More Replies...I love it when Republican Policy Warriors (should be a new term. RPW’s) come up with arguments like “ why should I have to pay for YOUR healthcare” instead of wondering why it’s legal for hospitals to grossly and unashamedly overchange people for medical services. It’s quite the stupid.
They've been brainwashed to fear not getting their fair share and they have no compassion. Americans are trained from an early age to believe that if they aren't living as well as those with generational wealth, it's their own failure. No matter that you didn't get the same early education, stable housing, healthy food, good healthcare and supportive community, if you're poor or just not rich, you must be lazy or stupid. Shame is a big reason people don't complain more about income inequality here, although many don't realize they've been brainwashed to feel that shame. I keep wondering how large of a negative impact exposure to leaded gas fumes has had on our culture and political system. That we've allowed the division of wealth to become so great! How could we have not realized what was happening unless we're brain damaged?! I feel as though I'm living through the fall of Rome.

Religiosity At An All Time Low In Norway
the more prosperous and weathly a country is, usually the less religious. You can see this clearly in europe. As marx said, opium of the masses (ie the poor). Africa is super religious, unsurprisingly. I am surprised however that it is as high as 27% . France is like 25% and Czechia I think is like 10%
I would make the assumption that education plays a big part in all of that, too - if it's affordable and widely available people are less likely to be fully religious
Load More Replies...Lovely... nobody needs stupid white old dude fairy tale scams and indoctrination.
In Sweden, about half the population is a member of the Swedish Church, simply out of habit; they were born into the church, they barely know how to leave it. It's mostly because people don't even care enough to call themselves atheists. Religion just isn't a part of their lives. Similar to people not calling themselves non-Chess-players, people don't call themselves non-religious.
The more enlightened your government the less need for benighted religion and its perpetrators.
This is true for Americans as well; the atheist population is growing

Many Foreigners Don’t Know That Tap Water In Norway Is Great. Most Places It’s Better Than Bottle Water. It’s Literally Spring Water Many Places. It’s Not Something We Talk About, We Take It For Granted. Just Want To Inform About That Amazing Thing In Norway
My tap water is literally bottled water -- my well is on the same ancient aquifer as a bottling company. A nearby city water is on the same aquifer. We wash clothes and flush our toilets with 300+ year old pure H2o. And yes, I'm in the US.
Same here in Germany, especially in the more mountainous regions a lot of villages and towns have their own natural springs and reservoirs
Over here in parts of the western US we can drink tap water without issue. I know some places ain't like that though.
We have delicious tap water at my house in the US because it comes directly from a well. But when I've lived places with city water I always had to use a Brita filter because the taste was gross. So it just depends.
Please all of you. Remember that not everyone in the world have drinking water at their disposal and stop wasting it by leaving the tap open while you brush your teath and such. One day there may not be enough water for us any more.
A Large Acrylic Painting I Made Of Lille Øvregaten In Bergen During The Pandemic Lockdowns
o this brings back memories, I must have walked here hundreds of times when I was at uni. its cleaner then the reality, and dry
I love Bergen, I think it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Mythical Beasts Of Scandinavia
a few that I recognise: havfru = habour frue (wife) = mermaid. Hav = sea, but cognate with harbour. storsjoodjuret = great sea (lake) animal (djur). -et = the. Mara= crusher (nightmare = night crusher). draugr = kind of zombie. kraken yall should know from disney's carribean series.
I know Trold (or troll), Lindworm, Nisse, Mara, Skogsrå, Storsjöodjuret, Varulven and Vittra. Oh, and I've heard of Dovregubben.
There is a viewing platform next to the lake where Selma lives where you can look for her...
Oh, how fun, saved this. I know of some of those beasts. Näkki being the scariest.
It’s Facts
Just because the US claims it's a democracy doesn't make it so. Way too much taxation without representation to start a very long list.
I need to know why Democracy is capitalized in American but not in Norwegian?.
Helt Nøyaktig
Except the Vikings that attacked Lindisfarne were almost certainly Danes not Norwegian.
Think it's called murder and pillaging. 🎶So sorry to be negative Bored Pandas 🎶
Tis good the Vikings were there, otherwise those goods would have been damaged.

Norway is such a poor socialist country that children have to drive Audis instead of Porsches
Well, in all fairness....could be worse! They could be driving utterly awful American cars (made in Mexico, US and Canada)

People In Bergen Celebrating That It's Not Raining For One Day
Wait a second. I knew about the lack of sunshine and the months of snow, but what's this about frequent rain? Just Googled this and found that "Bergen 'enjoys' 239 rainy days of the 365 days in a year". Okay, just what has you people so freaking happy???
When I was in Bergen a couple of weeks ago, I cursed the (fortunately intermittent) rain during the day. But then night fell, and the city was magical with the glistening reflections, especially from the cobblestone streets.

He had lots of practice. He lived with the Inuit tribes for years learning how to live off the land and survive. IIRC he wasn't just the first person at the South Pole but the first to visit both poles.
Load More Replies...Failing to grasp even a guess as to how the image and content cooperate, I shall move onward.
It's about the race to the South Pole. We should wait for a native to confirm, but the title means something like "When the UK is aiming for your spot"... (a far more literal translation would be "When the UK is after your camp"). It's a very interesting (and sad) story, but in a nutshell, Captain Scott (UK) wanted to be the first man to reach the South Pole, but Amundsen (Norway) got there first. Hope that helps :)

Cruise Tourists
It is mostly their pure number. Noone would mind ten or twenty of them, but if a single ship docks, there are about 5 000 of them streaming into a town like locusts, mostly with a sense of entitlement as they have paid a lot for this journey, and very rushed, as they have to be back for lunch. If the destination is popular, there might be tens of thousands of cruise tourists simultanously. You can ruin every town with this.
