If you have ever taken a casual look at an average map of the world, you have no doubt been struck by the sheer size of Russia and, to a lesser extent, Canada. This does make sense, as these are the largest countries on the planet, however, did you know that a little feature of mapmaking called Mercator projection makes them look significantly larger than they really are?

This comes from the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator, who created a “cylindrical” map to represent the world in 1569. After all, unless you are looking at a globe, most maps are drawn, painted, or printed on a rectangular surface. Imagine the tube-like maps pirates are always dragging around and you have a pretty good depiction of an early Mercator map.

The fact that so many people misunderstand this map shows that people don't get out of their house enough. Looking at this map you can tell where the deserts are and where the Mississippi River and Missouri Rivers run. Not everything is about American politics. Political parties should be classified terrorist organizations. Except they spread fear to manipulate voters to vote for them.

Current annual salary in Ireland is €44,000 (https://www.jobted.ie/salary) which works out at 22.6 years to €1 million. Current UK salary is £29,600 (https://uk.jobted.com/salary) (€34,000 at today's rate) which works out at 29 years to €1 million. So either the data is hopelessly out of date or the calcualtions are all wrong. Confidence in the rest of the figures duly shaken

It's not hard to make a million in the Western World. I know that sounds crazy but it accumulates with time. You have to spend wisely and manage your money. When I bought my first trucks and trailers (got an insane deal in 2008 when a trucking company slashed 1500 trucks from Its fleet) people who owned their own trucks made around $1.00 to $1.20 per mile. I've driven 1.75 million miles since 2008. But 85% of that goes to fuel, insurance, tax, permits and maintenance.

After all, the real landmasses on the planet, which are spherical, don’t translate 1-to-1 on a rectangular map. Certain sections end up stretched and, as a result, appear to be a lot larger than they actually are. Mercator chose to “focus” the map on the northern hemisphere, where locations closer to the “top” of the map would end up seeming larger. Hence Russia and Canada being absolutely gigantic on so many maps.

The people live there are also Chinese. Learn some history. China had Xinjiang area since Han Dynasty and Xizang/Tibet since Ming Dynasty. There were times those areas were lost but by the last dynasty both were back, PRC just inherited those lands, not like the western media claim that they invaded. People just like to live in the most developed areas, are you going to break apart every country's least settled areas?

And this is the reason why China is bulling other countries like Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam , building artificial islands in and appropriating the China Sea. Right now there is no buffer between China's most populated territories and the East, so geostrategically they are very weakened. One example is because they are continually threatening to invade Taiwan. It would be the main threat to China and that is why they cannot allow the US to position a military Base in Taiwan. it would be a casus belli. and the Americans know it.

Seems every country's population tend to congregate in areas that provide best living conditions. In Canada, it is the southern areas, in the US it is along waterways and the coasts, etc. People tend to shy away from areas that offer the least benefits and provide the least quality of life.

In fact, at the time, these maps were specifically created to aid in marine navigation. While it’s quite irrelevant to us, early seafarers could use a Mercator map to get a “straight” bearing when sailing to a new location. On a map that doesn’t use Mercator projection, the bearing would be a curve, representing the curve of the globe.

First not one book on this list is banned from you buying it or owning it or reading it Second, if you want your kid prepared, shouldn't you be the one who decides for what? And control the information the state provides?

I searched and tried to find out what books were banned in my state of Massachusetts since this thing says there were a few. Neither of their sources seemed to suggest any had been, and the first (Pen America) has a map like this for 2022 in which it shows Mass having zero bans. The overall point of this infographic still stands - books are being banned in the US - but the company that made this graphic has me asking questions.

This sort of map has simply stuck around for hundreds of years, leading many people to draw somewhat incorrect conclusions about the real size of things. We are lucky that Russia and Canada really are the two largest countries, so the distortions don’t seem as bad. Other examples of distortion are the similarity between the UK and Madagascar, despite the latter being nearly twice as large.

Makes sense, Christian influenced countries have it on Sunday, Islamic ones on Friday, and Israel has also Fri-Sat (though employers must allow Christians time off for Sunday) because Judaism is Sat, and the second largest religion is Islam. Though they are experimenting with a fri-sun 3 day weekend. What I dont under is the Fri and Sun one, that there is a work day in the middle

This isn’t all what it seems. In Japanese, one says “five tens seven” (go ju nana), while in English one says the same thing (fif-ty seven), but we don’t think of English saying “5x10 +7”. It’s just a matter of perspective.

In Danish, seventy-four is fireoghalvfjerdsindstyve which translates to ‘four-and-half-quadruple-times-twenty’ which makes no sense until one learns that ‘half-quadruple’ is not two but an archaic way of saying ‘three and a half’.

I don't think I can get myself to say that any of these are complicated since in Danish you say: seven and the half of the third twenty. We count in 20s (an old word for 20 is snes) from 50 and up to 90, both included. 50 is halvtres= halv (half), tre (three), s (short for snes). 57 is then syvoghalvtres (syv -seven. Og -and).

French says, "50+7" for 57, but "4x20+7" for 87. And "60+17" for 77. Owing to French relations, traditionally English used "score" for counting by 20, but this is almost extinct in U.S. English. In its most famous U.S. political speech, President Abraham Lincoln referred to the founding of American democracy, "four score and seven years ago..."

The (outer) parts of the body that are not covered by hair are the palms, soles of the foot, the eyeballs, mucuous membranes (mouth, genitals). The rest is covered by (thin) hair. This applies for men and women. What is different though is the amount (or density) of hair 🤓

So the Australian Aboriginal population has been here for a very long time (estimation of at least 80,000 years), very different to most of the Pacific. It makes me wonder where they migrated from and what this map means for them. It could just be genetic drift in adapting to the Australian climate but it could indicate where they started from...

The US accounts for 4% of the global population, but 15% of global emissions. US transportation emissions account for nearly 5% of GLOBAL emissions. China does have nearly double the share of global emissions.....but they also have over 4 times the population! Which means Americans, on an individual level are still much, much worse compared against anyone in China, despite the fact that the majority of emissions coming out of China are due to the fact that they've become the manufacturing hub of the world, with a disproportionate amount going to serve....Americans. Not the companies, or the government, but the individuals. They don't get to do the bad things without the support, or at least the apathy of individuals.

Responsible cat owners (in North America at least) wouldn’t let their cats roam free outside :( they’re an invasive species and cause lots of issues, as well as it being extremely dangerous for the cat and dramatically shortening their lifespan and quality of life.

In regards to Alaska. A lot has to do with isolation: More isolated communities are harder to get police assistance and there are more crimes due to it. Drugs (a big factor), property theft, suicide, assault and murder happen very frequently. In the larger cities there is a lot of gang violence. There are also a lot of systemic socioeconomic disparities especially in indigenous communities.

However in many of these states, nearly all the violent crime are in 1 or 2 cities. In fact in the US we we remove our 6 highest crime cities from our national numbers, US becomes one of the lowest violent crime countries out there. It's a few urban areas, which shows crime solutions need to be focused on those urban cities.

Nope, according to 'The Swedish Board of Agriculture', it's poultry meat (when not including sausages, ham and kassler). When you include them (and assuming they are 100% pork meat, pork is #1 by approximately 3,5x compared to fish.

These maps are misleading. They should have shown the point where it was reached and the temperature by zones. As it appears on the map it seems that all of Spain reached 47 degrees when it was in the south of Spain and probably in the northern half the temperatures were. By far lower

Well....except for the fact that you can see countries that exist entirely and considerably north of Spain that are 0.6-3 degrees cooler. Like countries that are as far north as canada topping 110F (43c) and you're trying to pretend that this is somehow misleading? Sorry, but you're just missing the point.

Up until the mid 19th century Germans were the second largest population of white people in the states. In the 18th century there were more German language newspapers in Pennsylvania than English. Then in late 19th century another wave of Germans (including both sides of my family) immigrated to the Midwest. Hence all the German!

Fabre, Favre, Lefevre, Lefebvre and Faivre are all descended from the same root, the latin word "faber", which meant " craftsman" ... or ...Smith -))) Moreau means " little More" and was used for dark-haired people suspected ( rightly or wrongly) to be of Arab origins ( they did invade in the 9th century). Mostly, for long, common people didn't have a last name, and to tell apart people with the same first name, one used their occupation, physical particularities, or location (Dupuy means " from the hill", same as Delpech). I'm just à bir puzzled with " Wintersheim" , in , I think, Indre. ???

Land reclamation, essentially alot of the land was mangrove forest which can be drained and dried fairly easily. There are a dozen projects right now to reclaim land in the north West and north east. Also sand in this area builds up quickly, this means that islands can connect together and grow.

not surprising. my blood type is not common. after the blood bank realized i was coming in regularly they would often call me every 53 days to ask if i would be dropping by. due to meds i can't donate anymore but would encourage everyone to do so.

I was so annoyed when I turned 16 that I was too underweight to donate blood. By the time I had put on enough weight, the meds I was on meant I couldn't donate and probably never will.

I would recommend encouraging yourself. That helping save another person's life is more important than a fear. If you ensure you are hydrated and eat a healthy meal before you go, it helps to decrease the time it takes to get a pint of blood. I hope you overcome your fear, donating blood is something you should be proud of. It can also help you overall health wise. Good luck!
