40 Times Boston Home Inspectors Discovered Such Interesting Things, They Just Had To Take A Photo
Just like Alpha Alpha Structural, Inc. (previously here, here, and here), Boston Home Inspectors also rain on people's parades. Well, kinda. In a nice way.
"We are hired by the buyer of a property to inspect the exterior of the house, basement, and structure along with all of the home systems," James Brock of Boston Home Inspectors told Bored Panda. "We test all the outlets, appliances, windows, doors, and bathroom fixtures. We, both, look for items not installed properly or that may be deteriorated, defective, or have an item of concern. For example, a leak or unsafe conditions."
Besides looking for problems or issues, the company educates the buyer about the investment that they will be making. "We teach them how the various components in their new home work and what to expect for life expectancy and what to plan for future maintenance."
During the past 24 years, Boston Home Inspectors have seen quite a bit in their job. From crazy DIY solutions to years of neglect, they share pictures of their most interesting finds on social media. Here are some of the most popular ones.

When talking about common problems, Brock said their Instagram is a pretty good representation of the big picture.
"As you can see, decks seem to have the most issues. Many are not built right or inspected annually for issues. Wood and metal deteriorate and corrode. Too many times people have a deck built and never give it a second thought for 15-20 years, meanwhile, the wood is starting to rot and the metal components rust."
"Also the famous uncle who knows just a little about everything, but is master of nothing, has now built your dream deck wrong! The deck is now potentially dangerous. I understand homeowners are trying to save money, but most times these items will cost them more in the long run," Brock explained.
Well, Hello Now!
Looks like kitty appears to allow or deny your entry through that door 😄
When You Need Privacy!
I'm more concerned that this door locks from the outside. I get the inside lock, but why the deadbolt that locks from the outside??
i wish i had that cuz my parents took the lock off my door so now i kinda have to stand against my door -_-
There are a lot of things that could make a home dangerous: it could be the hot water temperature (140F), stairs without handrails, loose toilets, uneven front steps, leaning basement stairs, non-GFI outlets next to a bathtub, window seats in a child's room, clogged fireplace flues, large icicles hanging from the gutters, uneven basement floors for tripping, fire hazards like clogged dryer vents or wiring not to code. The list is long. Apparently, there are many items in a home that can become unsafe if installed incorrectly or have started to age/deteriorate.
Another Room With A View!
It would be funny if that was the same house that had four locks in the bathroom door.
Yes, the feeling of looking down on the world while you're shitting...
Just A Cool Set Of Stairs
Don't most stairs look like this? I know both sets in my home do, but are covered by a wall. My lower level stairs have a closet under them.
Load More Replies...These stairs are lovely. It looks like it's floating, but the moldings are hiding the parts that anchor it into the wall, is my bet, and if not, then the craftsmanship in the "free" stairs? I grew up in a house with those kind, and they're safe. Good carpentry in our case. Hidden supports in this one, my gramps would say...
I’m guessing bc there isn’t a visible support?
Load More Replies...I think this is actually a nifty design choice. It adds texture and character to an otherwise awkward no use space.
Most people just slap some drywall there and make it a closet (under the stairs). It’s refreshing when it’s not.
Load More Replies...They look good, I give them that. But as a tall person, I hit my head way too many times to not being able to see the hazards here....
Load More Replies...Nothing wrong with floating stairs. There are 4" I-beams anchoring them to a load bearing grid. The problem I have is the design. It looks like someone stacked drawers from an antique dresser.
Exactly. I don't know where many commentators live, but for example in Italy and in many European countries it is perfectly common to see floating stairs, even stairs of many floors, in apartment buildings, even with marble steps. You just need to know how to build them and they last practically forever.
Load More Replies...I don't see it. What's wrong with it? Ok, it looks bad, but it's still functional.
I've played enough games to know those stairs pull into the wall slowly when you step on them.
"I love to use the analogy with home buyers, do you take your car in for regular maintenance and yearly inspection? Your home is no different than your car," Brock said. "Your home needs the heating and air conditioning system serviced and maintained annually. Same with the roof, dryer vent, foundation, decks, water heater, fireplace, etc."

Mother-In-Law Door
As I remember from Saturday morning cartoons, "Watch out for the first step! It's a doozy!"
Actually, those are a proper thing in deep snow countries. The house my husband lived in as a child (South Wales) had 2 1/2 stories, with a reinforced front door on every level. The windows were reinforced as well. Some winters, the snow came up to the top floor.
Common in much older homes. A lot of the time the second story balcony gets removed. There's a historic home down the street from me with 3 doors like that!
Just remind me of the Sarah Winchester house all them doors that lead nowhere well lead to you have a nasty fall
In the keweenaw peninsula (the very furthest north you can go in michigan's U.P and surrounded on 3 sides by lake superior) seeing houses with a second story door like that is pretty common place. The snows get so deep some years that they can end up burying the entire 1st floor so you have to use snowshoes or ski's and leave from the second story, it's rare that the snow ever gets high enough to actually reach the 2nd door but if the summer door is barricaded with snow then it'll be close enough, to at least sit on the edge first then drop a couple feet. Everyone there uses snowmobiles to get around in winter, the bridge over the canal that connects the keweenaw to Houghton (home of the MTU huskies) has two separate levels, one meant for vehicles and one with a special surface meant for snowmobiles (only one is usable at a time, in the winter they have to lower [raise? I always forget which level is which] the bridge so the snowmobile level is level with the ramps on and off
There's also a giant reference ruler that marks their record amount of accumulated snow, if I remember correctly the mark sits at around 28 feet and some inches.
Load More Replies...Interesting
Not sure any rules are broken here? It allows you to read the meters through a (potentially locked) door. The other crud... it just normally collects in boiler cabinets.
The NEC says utility rooms shall be clear with a 3 ' radius all around. Look up "meters blowing" onnline to see why the door thing is bad.
Load More Replies...That is a fire door. That is what the foam is inside for. It is meant to create a fire break between 2 areas, like the garage and the house. Doing that to the door compromises the intent.
No. The foam is insulation because it is an exterior door. A fire door would be made of much thicker sheet metal.
Load More Replies...When you realize you put that there without knowing, you do what you gotta do.
It doesn't look like the door can fully close. Truly interesting... XD
If you want to prolong your home's lifespan, Brock advises having a professional tradesman, who you can build a long-term relationship with. "[Your home] is your investment and it needs to be protected (inspected, serviced, and maintained). There are several dozen homeowners who have Boston Home Inspectors at their home every 3 years to inspect the major items and components and give them a list of the next few things they should focus on.
For example, Brock said that in the next 3 years, some of these people will have the chimney pointed, repair some deteriorated wood and paint the weathered side of the house, fix the loose deck handrails and repair the leaning fence. "[Regular annual maintenance of the home and its items] gives the direction and what to focus on next."
Seriously?? I Know You Said It Wasn’t Finished Yet
That's impressive. It takes years of work to teach a house how to use stilts.
"They said it couldn't be done. The first one I built fell over. The second one, I built on top, it walked up to soft ground then fell over. The third one I built on top of that... it walked to the swamp, caught fire, then fell over. But the fourth one, one day, will be yours!"

Why didn't the electrician just send the electrical pipe around the drain or vice versa?
They do have pieces to go around but some people are just lazy or stupid.
While creating the Instagram page, Brock wanted it not to be a science book or manual, lecturing people on what they should or not should do, we get enough of that all day long, he said.
"I wanted a spot where people could go, relate to a picture as a homeowner, laugh, and say 'I'm glad that's not my house.' And at the end of the day, they can look at their own home ... and they can say 'At least my deck post is not sitting on a bolder.' Or 'At least my home doesn't look like that.'"

Hmmmm
A friend bought a house where they had done this but they hadn't got planning permission. If they haven't changed the outer part beware. The area had rules around how much space must be allocated to cars/parking in order to keep the roads clear. It caused massive complications for the purchase and will do again when they sell as they've not altered it.
Load More Replies...This a new home used as a staged model for a new housing development. For some reason the put plants in front the garages. Once the development is sold, and the models need to sell, they will rip it all out and make a driveway. It is strange and quite wasteful.
They've probably turned the garage into another room or even a tiny apartment.
I see this quite a lot actually. People don't really own cars anymore with good communal transport. The garage door is often facing the front of the yard, so it's a good place to show of your plants.
And the inside may be a workshop so you want to open it for air & light; the roll-up mechanism still works. It's just a change-of-use, finally a reversal after decades of people concreting their front garden into a private parking space.
Load More Replies...I've seen model homes with this kind of setup. Apparently they think you won't notice how small the front yard really is.
Good catch. The builders probably didn't want to pave it. Some people like pavers but they are very expensive.

Clearly not being used for what it was originally intended for. Would make a big room...
Maybe they converted the garage into an extra room, and kept the old garage door as a design detail outside, and maybe even inside as well (making sure to insulate around it, of course).

Load More Replies...I don't see any problem here? I mean, as far I know, fences aren't mandatory, and if the people living here know they won't trip over, then why should they install one?
In most building codes they are, though. Just like you need staircase railings with gaps smaller than 10cm (mostly for baby heads).
Load More Replies...So here's how it would go. I come home from school and walk into the house. I see my brother. We argue about whether gold is an odd or even color and if it is right or left. My Brother rushes in when they can and cries about how they never should have argued with me. They tell me that I will always be right about everything now. Bam! I'm now right about everything. ... Sign me up for that house.

No prob if built up to regs. Cantilevers came into fashion in the 30s with modernism.
A cantilever would of worked but this isn't one because of the piece of angle iron making up the hypotenuse of the triangle. Which seems pretty unnecessary to me, because I agree with you that with how short of an overhang it is and the fact that the space isn't wide enough to park anything commercial/heavy there a cantilever made of 3/8" angle iron would have been plenty strong enough, I guess the extra support is incase they ever need to set a 3' wide 20' tall solid lead block there.
Load More Replies...Almost!
Rather old homes were plumbed with the toilet f****e further from the wall than modern homes would be. Toilets with a deeper f****e-offset are available, but they are stupidly expensive compared to regular toilets. Installing a regular toilet on a deep-offset f****e results in a space behind the tank, and the bowl being further forward than it should be.

This is definitely a DIY job, a builder wouldn't use corrugated drain piping as a concrete form. They would use a proper plastic form, or a paperboard tube over a footing, or a pre-cast pier.

With me inside the bathroom, in a towel, at 6am. They - no joke - told me "we're sending the strongest man in the hotel" (who turned out to be the chef) "to set you free". Yes I sat in there for about 4 hours in a towel (thank God for giant towels) whilst this man tried to force the door down. Load More Replies...That looks like what's called a floating floor. The joints between the boards aren't tight, they're just tongue and groove. They're lain on top of concrete or other floors. But that underlayment here wasn't sealed properly so moisture infiltrated from either above (mopping would do it) or below (evaporation from rooms or soils below) created a perfect environment for growth.

First fix leaks (roof/wall/pipes), then consider ventilation and insulation (as condensation can do same; not this given standing water, but can be additional problem), then remove plaster/drywall & redo. Not a big deal, really, except that "fix leaks" may cost you more than a whole roof and trusses etc (or just a bit of pipework).

I've had the same prob in my bedroom. I too like to sleep in cold. Never had any probs for 10 years, but now some mold builds up around the window. I've tried specific products and repainted.. . Comes up again. I think it's because my bf moved in and now theres two of us breathing at night lol
Load More Replies...I lived like this for 2 years. It was an under dwelling (international readers please Google it!). It was so cold in the bedroom even in summer that I had an electric blanket that I used to switch on half an hour before I went to bed so that I wouldn’t have to shiver myself to sleep. Ah, fun times.
omfg so we moved into our new house 2 years ago and needed a new dishwasher. you can guess what happens next.

Somebody Forgot To Change The Water Filter
So...who has the bottle of un-see juice today?? Please pass it here...pronto.
Saw this when I first moved into my house... it looked like a rat crawled in and died. Pulled it all out and put in a $7K system with mineral tank etc. We have high iron here. But how people don't change (or don't KNOW to change them...)
It's a particulate filter on a water line. Given the big blue tank in the background, I would surmise that this home has well-water. High concentrations of dissolved iron aren't unusual in that circumstance.

Guess What’s Holding This Deck To The House...scary
Sorry but that's right. There are 9 (assumed 9 nails put in each support board hanger in this photo. Remember there are usually support boards every 16-24" on the deck floor. They always get warped a bit when banging the nails in. This is to code everywhere I know.
The next one is in view, and seems neatly flush so I agree. However, there's something off as you see the previous nailholes in this one, plus being 1/2" short and this bent hanger.

Nothing wrong with this kind of flue, as long as you get a sweep after every fire season.
That's fine if its connected to a fireplace, but if its being used by a gas furnace it needs to be lined.

When we were looking at homes ours claimed it had a custom patio. Turns out the custom patio consisted of 4 concrete blocks arranged into a square & someone got spray paint on them lol
Looks like they meant to put a deck in, ran out of money, and went with this instead.
More likely it's a house flipper. The old deck had big problems so they ripped it out and put one in that they found on the side of the road.

Some DIY idiot put a wall right where the opening for the furnace filter is. Then they cut a slot in the drywall to slide the filter in, plus the filter isn't the correct size.

Buss fuses like these were never the problem, people being too cheap to replace a blown one and putting a penny under it to bypass a blown fuse were the problem.
The wires and insulation on them is more of the problem. Bare copper sheathed in asbestos.

Needless to say we rewired the whole house.
This might seem like a stupid question- but what are abestos? And why does this pic mean them? Thnx!
Doesn't. A lot of people see gray insulation and think "asbestos", but that isn't always the case. In this case we have cloth covered wiring... Which has turned gray after 50+ years.

Found On Yesterday’s Inspection And Still Working!
It's older than most people still living. It's a convection furnace (no blower, works on the principle of hot air rising), formerly fired by coal, and converted to gas at some point.
Load More Replies...There's not much on these things to go wrong so they can last forever especially since it's a gas conversion. There are only two downsides to these - first, they are blindingly inefficient and devour huge quantities of fuel - second, the hot air pipes are often swathed in asbestos since they get much warmer than those in a forced air furnace... it's likely that the pipes here are asbestos lined where they come in contact with the wooden frame of the house.
Those old "octopus" heaters are awesome, one little gas burner keeps a 2 story house perfectly warm.

I had to use an overturned bucket to keep everything together while I looked into contacting the seller... who had vanished. Many other issues came to light very soon after.

Yep, That Should Keep The Kids And Drunk Friends From Falling!
Any water on the roof will be channeled under the decking. If pine needles can collect between decking and roof, water will definitely get underneath and rot and/or mold whatever is under there. If the triangle end of the rail is not tied into the rafters, it is useless and will not hold anyone's weight who should fall against it. If that railing is just nailed onto the roof, the nails are spots for leakage into the attic space and a source for mold. That's just a few of the things I see wrong. Besides, who puts a deck on the roof?

When The Listing Agent Says The Seller Is A Contractor So You Shouldn’t Find Any Problems...
Inspectors don't always look at work done by contractors because, well, they're supposed to be pros. I'm renovating a 1920 bungalow and the inspector actually inspects everything I do and if anything is off he tells me why and makes sure it's up to code or better. So far a couple extra nail guards has been the only issue.
This is basically what they did in our current house too. Obviously we installed it correctly after we bought the house.

So much mould. I doubt this is just a Boston problem tho this is just where these inspectors work. I've seen and lived in some real shockers in my day and I'm not american. Mould is the worst though it stinks it makes u sick and it generally grows in the cold and damp. I learned quick to look at the backs of the curtains when checking out a rental
Also, give the bottoms of the walls under windows a quick push. If it has any give whatsoever, it's moisture compromised and definitely has mold (at the very least.)

I'm not saying Boston is the worst, but it lets developers get away with keeping some amazingly bad stuff if they "don't alter the frame or foundation". Add that to most houses being over a hundred years old with some older than the USA, and there is definitely some cringe worthy building.
I did a remodel on an old mobile office once. During demo we found a rotten hunk of moldy metal that used to be a water heater completely sealed up in the corner behind the base cabinets. Literally the only way to get to it would be take out the countertop or destroy outside floors or walls.
