Dubai, also spelled Dubayy, is the capital of the emirate of Dubai, one of the wealthiest of the seven emirates that constitute the federation of the United Arab Emirates, which was created in 1971 following independence from Great Britain. Over nine-tenths of the emirate's population lives in the capital and nearby built-up sections.

There are several theories about the origin of the name. Some associate it with the daba, a type of locust that infests the area, while others hold that it refers to a market that existed near the city.

In recent years, it has been compared to Singapore and Hong Kong and has been often regarded as the Middle East's premier entrepôt. What's more, in 2022, the Dubai tourism sector saw 14.36 million international overnight visitors. So we at Bored Panda decided to compile a collection of pictures that illustrate the many faces of this corner of the world. Enjoy!

Id, I agree 1,000%. And you wrote: "especially women, who willingly visits that country is..." in GRAVE DANGER. Women can be arrested and jailed for going into a bar alone and wearing "unseemly Western clothing." They kill women for all kinds of "misbehavior." Horrible horrendous country with no regard for civil or human rights.

How is this even possible? Is that the sun, because the sun never looks like that, it’s never eclipsed like that on a regular basis.

The story of this shot is quite interesting. The guy came to know of the eclipse, rushed to plan every little detail, hired the camel and the farmer, calculated the sun, moon and camel position to find the perfect spot and located the perfect dune. Then, when the eclipse came and he started shooting he had to constantly move around to fit the camel's movements. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/photographing-an-annular-solar-eclipse-in-the-desert.html

Dubai is a city of skyscrapers, ports, and beaches, where big business takes place next to sun-seeking tourism. Because of its large expatriate population, it often feels like a Middle Eastern melting pot, and the atmosphere is generally tolerant.

Religious affiliations are not a prominent aspect of city life. While Islam is the majority religion, churches and Hindu temples coexist with Dubai’s mosques.

I love seeing all thee accommodations/adaptions on beaches for people with mobility needs. Although they aren't everywhere, they are becoming more common. When my youngest brother was alive we had to make do with a combination of his mountain buggy and us physically lifting him if we went to the beach (which he loved). He wasn't light either, so it was a two-person lift too.

Dubai’s population has grown steadily over the past two centuries, from just a few thousand local inhabitants to well over two million.

It is a relatively crime-free place where administrative efficiency and openness to business have encouraged astonishing growth. However, criticism of the local authoritarian government and the ruling elite is not tolerated.

So you're only allowed one item per person, so that'd mean you have to decide whether you're hungry or thirsty. One bottle of water or one can of food. If that's what they mean it is pretty mean. In one of the world's richest cities, why cant an individual have one item of each, to make a meal and feed themselves for a few days?

It may be one of the richest countries but how is that wealth distributed? This shop owner might not be able to afford more than this, or the demand may be so high that they want it to be able to reach as many as possible. I would hope many places did this, so they could take food from here and water somewhere else, if needed.

Functionally, wouldn't that be equivalent to roads in heavy snowfall countries? They have to be closed and reopened only after the clearing.

Yes, in Egypt while travelling by bus late at night, we met several snowplows clearing the road from sand. As they already had cleared the road behind them, we could continue our travel.

To boost these numbers even more, Dubai has announced new plans to extend the length of the emirate’s beaches from 21 km to 105 km (13 to 65 miles).

The plan, which forms part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, features the opening of new beaches and the development of existing ones with advanced facilities. The expansion should not only attract more tourists from around the world but cater to the growing emirate’s population.

A "leash". And there is a perch on the bike as well. They are big on falconry and will jump any tourist so they can ask for a stupid amount of money for pictures. One second you have a falcon on top of your head, the next second you are $20 out of pocket. Most of the time however the birds are well taken care of.

the treatment of "guest" workers there is appalling. downvote me all you want, but i have several reasons for disliking this place. The treatment and disregard for hard working ppl is one. Next up: i feel the same about Dubai as Las Vegas: no city should exist in that kind of desert. it is environmentally irresponsible. third: vulgar displays of wealth are just....gross. Especially in this context: how much of that wealth is oil, made off the backs of those same workers??

Most of the early population increases were due to merchants from neighboring countries choosing to relocate to Dubai’s business-friendly environment but in the later 20th century, the city's construction boom led to a huge increase in the number of South Asian laborers and an influx of skilled expatriates from all over the world who play an important role in Dubai’s multi-sector economy.

Now I think bout it, we have ones for bottles and cans that are circular (with flaps around the edges, I'm just realising are so things that aren't recyclable are harder to push in). I've never really thought about why before. Those are more common in food courts. We don't see the ones for paper though, or I haven't, in Australia.

Actually UAE requires passport and application processes for a temporary SIM that needs to be renewed every 30 days for a non resident or if you used E-gates, but 90 days if you have a visa. It is a huge pain because you have to take your passport and go to the store to show staff at vodaphone/Virgin/Etalat etc so they can call through and re-validate you every few weeks. This stops the need to go through all of that and basically it is only valid for a few weeks and you don’t need to go through all the rigmarole of stores and validating passports. You will have internet and a number for a short time.

Basically it's people who come from somewhere else in the world to work in the UAE. They make pretty good money while there and finance the car. When their work ends they simply leave the country and leave the car behind, generally in the parking garage of where they were living. Thing is, if they ever go back through the UAE in such a way that they have to go through customs they'll be detained for the abandonment of the loan. Basically they can never go back to the UAE.

My understanding of this phenomena is that in Dubai you can be punished for defaulting on a loan. So young "rich" individuals buy these expensive cars that they can't really afford and when they can't repay the loan they flee the country. So many of these abandoned cars are left at the airports. I am not sure what the punishment is but given Dubai's absolute zero tolerance for crime it could well be prison time.

This whole post tries to make us believe Dubai is great place with good-hearted people and a lot of kindnes and all. The fact that people build a ski resort in a desert and dont give a single f**k about the environment tells a lot. And not to forget the system.of modern slavery. It is oil? What is it that Dubai has that makes it so freaking wealthy? It’s a hot blazing desert. Devistating sandstorms that need constant $$$$ attention. Air conditioning and ice and coolant alone $$$$$$ for everything. What commodity is there that is in such excess and great demand and high price that Dubai can sustain itself at these higher than the creator above daily costs just to run itself and pay its government blah blah blah. I do not see any other country in this standing or at least it showing it. And if you want to live there. You better be a billionaire! I’m the most unlikely place…. Desert, blazing sun, no shade, no greenery.

Can you imagine the pressure a man in that society has on them? One has to assume saying no and looking broke is worse than death…. Those poor folks. If you don’t know any better and don’t know that your worth is still there regardless. One could really just totally believe they must keep up or they fail their family etc. sad.

Would it be better if it were in full sun where the kids could all get heat stroke and burnr skin? Or at street level where the kids could get lungs full of car fumes? What seems to be odd to us, and depressed looking, doesn't make it unhealthy.

There are more tigers in private zoos/kept as pets in the US than there are tigers in the wild.

If we domesticated all endangered animals on a large scale they wouldn't be endangered anymore! It's not like we're going to slow down habitat destruction anytime soon!

But there are fancy bikes in Dubai. My sister lived there. She once asked some dude if she could pose with his bike. He let her sit on it and they took a photo.
