“Meanwhile In Dubai”: From Golden Cars To Crazy Views From Skyscrapers, Here Are 50 Pics To Illustrate What Life In Dubai Is Like
Dubai, also spelled Dubayy, is the capital of the emirate of Dubai, one of the wealthiest of the seven emirates that constitute the federation of the United Arab Emirates, which was created in 1971 following independence from Great Britain. Over nine-tenths of the emirate's population lives in the capital and nearby built-up sections.
There are several theories about the origin of the name. Some associate it with the daba, a type of locust that infests the area, while others hold that it refers to a market that existed near the city.
In recent years, it has been compared to Singapore and Hong Kong and has been often regarded as the Middle East's premier entrepôt. What's more, in 2022, the Dubai tourism sector saw 14.36 million international overnight visitors. So we at Bored Panda decided to compile a collection of pictures that illustrate the many faces of this corner of the world. Enjoy!

Pretty shot, but you couldn't pay me to visit Dubai. Anyone, especially women, who willingly visits that country is nuts.
Id, I agree 1,000%. And you wrote: "especially women, who willingly visits that country is..." in GRAVE DANGER. Women can be arrested and jailed for going into a bar alone and wearing "unseemly Western clothing." They kill women for all kinds of "misbehavior." Horrible horrendous country with no regard for civil or human rights.

The story of this shot is quite interesting. The guy came to know of the eclipse, rushed to plan every little detail, hired the camel and the farmer, calculated the sun, moon and camel position to find the perfect spot and located the perfect dune. Then, when the eclipse came and he started shooting he had to constantly move around to fit the camel's movements. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/photographing-an-annular-solar-eclipse-in-the-desert.html

Load More Replies...Dubai is a city of skyscrapers, ports, and beaches, where big business takes place next to sun-seeking tourism. Because of its large expatriate population, it often feels like a Middle Eastern melting pot, and the atmosphere is generally tolerant.
Religious affiliations are not a prominent aspect of city life. While Islam is the majority religion, churches and Hindu temples coexist with Dubai’s mosques.

I love seeing all thee accommodations/adaptions on beaches for people with mobility needs. Although they aren't everywhere, they are becoming more common. When my youngest brother was alive we had to make do with a combination of his mountain buggy and us physically lifting him if we went to the beach (which he loved). He wasn't light either, so it was a two-person lift too.

Dubai’s population has grown steadily over the past two centuries, from just a few thousand local inhabitants to well over two million.
It is a relatively crime-free place where administrative efficiency and openness to business have encouraged astonishing growth. However, criticism of the local authoritarian government and the ruling elite is not tolerated.

It has incense as well. That wood boxy thing is an incensor. In the right lower corner, the off-white stuff is most likely frankincense.

This Sign In Dubai That Restores The Faith In Humanity
it's nice...but, a lot of the physical work in that area is done by very nearly slave labor...
Don't be fooled, Dubai is obscenely patriarchal and they use mostly foreign workers who are treated barely better than slaves.
No. It doesn't. Faith in humanity would be a givernment that ensures everyone has a place to live and enough to eat. This is dystopia.
Except if you're wearing rainbow colors, then you're not welcome in any store.
For a moment my brain thought this was a giant sign mounted asymmetrically on the side of a building shaped like a giant amazon box

Business In Dubai Giving Free Food For The Poor
Charity is one of the pillars of Islam. Sadly in Dubai it is needed because the city is built by trapped migrant workers paid poverty wages.

If that's what they mean it is pretty mean. In one of the world's richest cities, why cant an individual have one item of each, to make a meal and feed themselves for a few days?
It may be one of the richest countries but how is that wealth distributed? This shop owner might not be able to afford more than this, or the demand may be so high that they want it to be able to reach as many as possible. I would hope many places did this, so they could take food from here and water somewhere else, if needed.

Behind The Skyscrapers In Dubai
It isn't like a destitute area or slum. Just a place with 1-2 story buildings and villas. Just plain and not flashy. Sometimes perspective changes reality.
Load More Replies...the treatment of "guest" workers there is appalling. downvote me all you want, but i have several reasons for disliking this place. The treatment and disregard for hard working ppl is one. Next up: i feel the same about Dubai as Las Vegas: no city should exist in that kind of desert. it is environmentally irresponsible. third: vulgar displays of wealth are just....gross. Especially in this context: how much of that wealth is oil, made off the backs of those same workers??
And guess who's building the 'greatness'. Guest workers largely from impoverished countries. And they are working without safety measures. They are being bussed to the work sites before dawn and back after dusk.
finally something showing something else than superfluous wealth of the very few with the only indications poor people exist being charity fridges
You really don't want to see where the construction and other low paid workers live, trust me.

They absolutely need stunts of this nature. Otherwise it all boils down to oil.
Most of the early population increases were due to merchants from neighboring countries choosing to relocate to Dubai’s business-friendly environment but in the later 20th century, the city's construction boom led to a huge increase in the number of South Asian laborers and an influx of skilled expatriates from all over the world who play an important role in Dubai’s multi-sector economy.

This Free Sim Card I Got In Dubai Immigration
More a commercial thing. You are more likely to put some money on their card and use it on for calls, than using international plans on your home sim.
Load More Replies...Actually UAE requires passport and application processes for a temporary SIM that needs to be renewed every 30 days for a non resident or if you used E-gates, but 90 days if you have a visa. It is a huge pain because you have to take your passport and go to the store to show staff at vodaphone/Virgin/Etalat etc so they can call through and re-validate you every few weeks. This stops the need to go through all of that and basically it is only valid for a few weeks and you don’t need to go through all the rigmarole of stores and validating passports. You will have internet and a number for a short time.
They must have got rid of that, only telecom businesses at the airport. No freebies.

Abandoned Luxurious Car In Dubai
BROOOO, ABANDONED? WHO WOULD ABANDON THIS BABY NOT EVEN ANDREW TATE
Basically it's people who come from somewhere else in the world to work in the UAE. They make pretty good money while there and finance the car. When their work ends they simply leave the country and leave the car behind, generally in the parking garage of where they were living. Thing is, if they ever go back through the UAE in such a way that they have to go through customs they'll be detained for the abandonment of the loan. Basically they can never go back to the UAE.
Load More Replies...My understanding of this phenomena is that in Dubai you can be punished for defaulting on a loan. So young "rich" individuals buy these expensive cars that they can't really afford and when they can't repay the loan they flee the country. So many of these abandoned cars are left at the airports. I am not sure what the punishment is but given Dubai's absolute zero tolerance for crime it could well be prison time.

This Playground Was Built Under An Overpass To Stay Out Of The Sun
Would it be better if it were in full sun where the kids could all get heat stroke and burnr skin? Or at street level where the kids could get lungs full of car fumes? What seems to be odd to us, and depressed looking, doesn't make it unhealthy.

Chinatowns in big cities are vibrant and teeming and colourful. This is just depressingly empty and soulless
You do realise it is a small area in a mall with some shops and not an actual place where people live.

It's common to put a hood on a falcon when in the company of humans. It's meant to help train them and focus on their prey when taken off.
No. All trained falcons wear hoods that keep their eyes covered. It helps keep them calm.

Most of these photos are simply gross displays of wealth. I have no interest n visiting such a manufactured, toxic hub of shallow consumerism. Bleugh!

TBH it sounds like a lot of the world - especially now that the poor get poorer as the rich get richer.
