“I Went From 21 To 31 In 6 Months”: 45 Things That Inevitably Make People Look Older
Aging is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience. So if you live to be 90 years old, the wrinkles on your face should be worn proudly as a badge of honor and a sign that you've got plenty of stories to tell about your younger years. But while we don’t need to be scared of aging, it is a fact that some behaviors and experiences can make us look older faster than others.
Reddit users have recently been discussing things that can instantly age a person, so we’ve gathered some of their thoughts down below. Enjoy scrolling through, as you stay hydrated and remember to apply that handy dandy SPF, and keep reading to find a conversation with Catherine Summers of Not Dressed As Lamb!

Grief, nothing ages you like Grief
I'm sorry to hear that. I too have experienced grief and can confirm. I look my age.
Load More Replies...I've had grey hairs coming in since about that age too when my mom died.
Load More Replies...I’ve always thought that grief is like part of yourself dying. Your joy and life’s energy sucked out of you. That’s how I felt anyway.
Yeah. The leadup to loss, which can also contain grieving, will do a number too. Finding a couple white hairs at 32.
So true. I started get gray at 23 when my husband died suddenly in an accident.
Stress.
For me, stress caused atrial fibrillation, lack of sleep, and high blood pressure. Since I retired and focused on enjoying myself. my atrial fibrillation has markedly decreased (didn't even know that was possible), I sleep at least 7 hours a night, and my blood pressure has dropped 40 points. Haven't changed meds, just lifestyles.
Stress and grief make depression for me. As well as anxiety.
Load More Replies...Is it stress, itself? Or feeling stressed but holding it in and taking it out in other ways?
To learn more about some of the things that can instantly age a person, we reached out to Digital Content Creator and Blogger at Not Dressed As Lamb, Catherine Summers. "I think the number one thing that instantly ages a person is stress," she told Bored Panda. "Stress is what always accelerates aging in a person in my opinion (think of those pictures they show of American presidents before and after their term in office, the stress shows in their face)!"
"For me personally, it's been the biggest contributor to my 51-year-old body finally starting to feel like it really is 51, not 31 anymore," Catherine continued. "And with regards to the past few years, I don't think many people came out the other side of the pandemic without it having been challenging, tough or problematic for them. Sadly, for many people it was devastating. I was fortunate enough not to have experienced anything traumatic in my life but it was tough for various personal reasons. And for women especially, combine that stress with being perimenopausal/menopausal and it's very hard not to look or feel like you've aged."
War. I went from 21 to 31 in 6 months.
I went from 18 to 50 in Vietnam. No one should have to do or see what evil war is.
Wars should never happen, but if they do, then the Country's leaders should be on the front line
that's not how reality works. Arbitrary lines on a map? I know at least a few families who lost loved ones fighting for that territorial sovereignty.

Lack of sleep
For sure! Not that this is the only way to be sleep-deprived, but since becoming a parent, I've really aged!
Unless you're doing something absolutely joyous during all those hours you're awake.
Children
They make you look older but feel younger, in my experience! I'm jumping in puddles, finger-painting and making up silly songs but I do look older (because I am).
Same, loving playing with childish things again 😊
Load More Replies...My kids didn't age me, my ex-husbands did. If anything, my kids kept me youthful.
Are you f'ing kidding me? I have a sickly wife so I do more than my share of raising my son, and it keeps me so young. Totally had a second childhood, experiencing everything new with him!
"Being fit and healthy is the absolute, most important thing you can do to avoid the feeling of getting old," Catherine added. "Aiming to feel fit and strong is the key and is something that I, at least, took for granted until my mid-forties."
But Catherine says that aging itself is not a problem for her. "It's the feeling good that I want to preserve," she explained. "But in practical terms, smoking, bad sleep habits, no exercise and a terrible diet are all major contributors to the aging process. When I get those things in check (though I've never smoked), I feel a thousand times better. Sounds corny I know, but visible ageing in terms of wrinkles or sagging jowls means nothing if a person is truly content and feels good inside. The happiness shows on their face and the 'aging' really doesn't matter."
Back pain.
You can't move like a young person if your back hurts.
Just gets better with age. Some common things to look forward to. Arthritis. Hearing or eyesight loss. Heart or kidney problems. Memory problems.
Yeah, I'm seeing that happen right now. My mother is 56 and this year she suddenly developed a very aggressive form of arthritis. She used to be a very independent person, the kind who fixes things around the house, does everything that requires strength, she used to drive quite a big and heavy bike (a Royal Enfield Thunderbird for the curious). But now she can't walk straight, can't wash her hair or get dressed by herself, can't even cut chicken, sometimes she cries at night when the pain is too much. That arthritis really did age her in the span of a few months.
Load More Replies...I've had back pain since I was born thanks to Cerebral Palsy and spending most of my day in a wheelchair. Luckily, the chair I have currently can tilt, so it's easier to alleviate.
Yeah...getting older is SO much fun. You hit 50...your warranty expires and all your parts wear out!
I do ten-fifteen minutes of yoga in the morning before I do ANYTHING else (well, except pee). Every day. It has really made a difference.
30 years as a truck driver. Stress causes your capillaries to sliver, blood leaks into your body cavity. Blood attracts calcium, calcium becomes bone. I have a slew of knuckle bones across my tramp stamp area. No cure
I had a wicked spasm some years back. Went to chiro and stopped him immediately, co-worker is a CMT. She worked on me for an hour, walked in not being able to stand fully, walked out MUCH better. Next day was fine. May not work for serious cases, but massage really worked for me. Give it a shot?
Stress. Grief. Trauma. Mental Illness. Losing a loved one way before their time at a young age (parent/sibling/close friend).
this I can confirm. My younger brother died suddenly last monday... this is so unfair
My mother was dying and my brother came to see her and help me. 4 days after mom passed my brother was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. He passed 4 months later in her town. It's like he went on vacation and never got to go home. Unfortunate.
Bad plastic surgery.
They're not a big as they look. She overlined her actual lip line by 30mm. (I don't really understand this tactic. It's so obvious.)
Load More Replies......especially buccal fat removal. Sure, it initially gives you killer cheekbones. Unfortunately, you'll start looking cadaverous at 35yo. By 50yo, you'll look have creases that'll make you look like a marionette. And it can't be restored.
Any plastic surgery. They end up looking like a manikin ok I'm being jumped on. I mean anyone who goes off to get cheap plastic surgery with no medical need for it at all
all those women with breast cancer would take issue with you. as would car accident victims, domestic violence victims, babies with cleft pallets etc. So no, not any plastic surgery. Ignorant comment.
Load More Replies...Yes. Plastic surgery is split into two categories: cosmetic, and reconstructive. Not all cosmetic surgery is atrocious; you just don't notice the ones that are done properly because, well, they were done properly. Reconstructive surgery includes skin grafts after a severe burn, breast implants following a mastectomy, repairing a cleft palate or deviated septum, etc. And some surgeries can be either - a rhinoplasty (nose job) can be cosmetic if done to improve appearance, or reconstructive if reopening/repairing nasal passages following a broken nose.
Load More Replies..."Despite what I just said, it doesn't mean that I don't do anything to address the ageing process!" Catherine noted. "I do dislike the term 'anti-aging' where the beauty industry is concerned, as it suggests that it's a battle to keep aging at bay and something we need to fight all the time. We can't do anything to stop aging completely, but I believe that doing what you can to look the best you can, at whatever age you are, is key."
"For example, I stopped wearing black many years ago - bright colors are now my go-to," Catherine continued. "I do have a few black pieces in my wardrobe, but wearing black next to my face drains me and just makes me look unhappy and therefore I feel old. Brights are always a mood-booster: it's a lot harder to feel blue if you're wearing orange and pink!"
"I also gave up caring what others think about the way I dress long ago: with all the other stresses of life, worrying about others' opinions of you is not one to bother yourself with," the content creator added. "Do away with that worry and you'll feel ten times better about aging - not giving a [bleep!] about what others think of you is very liberating and I highly recommend it."
Chronic pain
Agree completely. The pain is just constant and at times unbearable. There is never a comfortable position, standing, sitting, laying down, nothing. It just takes your entire life from you, your energy, your spirit.
Load More Replies...Indeed. But you do get used to it, keep telling yourself "It's not so bad today." Then go around hunched over. People wonder why you avoid walking or even moving. You feel so lazy. It takes a toll spending one's days wanting nothing more than a nap & having trouble concentrating. I think the milder days are more insidious than the bad ones. Not hurting bad enough for treatment, but so many!
I can unfortunately identify with you. I became ill in ‘97 with a mysterious disease, that created spasms in my pelvic floor and I had had 8 surgeries all without relief. It wasn’t until 2005 that I was able to diagnose myself, Pudendal Neuralgia Entrapment, and had the corrective surgery but my nerves are too far damaged so I am on a cocktail of drugs. I have also had 2 hip surgeries due to no fault of my own and I have now developed PARS Defect right before covid hit so I am now looking at another major surgery that will require one year of recovery as well. I was in great shape, walked 5 miles every night and was an outdoors enthusiast and very active when I was young. I have been fighting for the last 25 years and I am so tired and I am only 61 and I feel like I am 120. Everything hurts and I have spent the last 7 years in my bedroom. I don’t know if I could survive another surgery as I am in need of 2 right now.
It never lets up. It can be bearable so that it becomes background noise but it never goes away. And then you get a flare and it’s ramped up 1000%. So that’s fun. 😬
Bad genes - like it or not. Some people smoke and drink their faces off and still look vibrant and healthy. Others eat well and exercise and look tired and lifeless
Looking vibrant and healthy but smoking seriously ruins everything inside you.
I have never seen a smoker who looks vibrant and healthy at age 50. Chain smokers at 50 look 70.
I've seen 20 something smokers look like a sick 50 year old. Whereas, I've seen 60 year olds look to be in their late 40s early 50s, with the energy and abilities of a 20 year old. There is no fountain of youth in the genes.
Load More Replies...I was spectacularly fit as a young person but was repeatedly told that I had the face of a 45-year old. When I turned 46 this year, for the first time in my life, I looked at myself in the mirror and thought 'Ha! Don't I look young for my age!'. I know it's only a year, but small victories eh?
Bad genes - on my dad's side we have heart issues galore. I'm 68, and mine just showed up. Got a pacemaker a week ago. Every single family of cousins has one or more members with heart issues. It's wild. I had NO idea how pervasive it was until I posted that I was in the hospital for observation and monitoring until Monday, when I would be getting a pacemaker.
This may be fine for folks under 40 but trust me, smoke and drink for 50 years you will look like azzz no matter the gene sequence
Many decades ago I lost a beloved aunt to lung cancer. She smoked like a chimney. You'd look at her and think she was perfectly healthy.
Look up pics of twins where one smoked and the other didn't. Almost the perfect control study with a placebo group that you can find regarding this matter.
It would only be the perfect control study if their lifestyles were also identical (and they themselves were identical twins) with no changes. Otherwise it wouldn't even be considered a good control study, much less the perfect one. There are too many other factors (and I am not defending smoking) that can easily affect one and not the other. I have two aunts that are twins, one smokes and drinks-has a job and a family to take care of, the other does not smoke or drink, has a part-time job she only does a few days a week and has no family. The one who smokes is in MUCH better health than the one who doesn't, despite smoking and drinking (which we know is not good, obviously). She also just generally looks better, healthier and even has a healthier approach to life-despite her shortcomings. It may be anecdotal, but it's a lot closer to the truth you'll find with that kind of "study". In other cases, the opposite would be true. There are too many factors outside of "smoking" to consider.

Working with the general public. Bartender of 21 years and nothing has aged me more than all y’all idiots.
Teacher: The kids are fantastic, the parents, peers, and administration, not so much. It's both the best and worst thing that ever happened to me.
Retired teacher/school administrator: I feel ya....sadly, 'twas always so. Often administrators are teachers who climbed the ladder . Some treat staff as if staff are potentially naughty students in the classroom .

Can confirm! I spent four years of my life dealing with the general public at my local zoo. I was in the Education department which meant dealing with the public.....90% of the time.
Catherine says she's also had a pretty strict skincare routine since she was a teenager, and she's never left makeup on at night. "But something I wish I did sooner was wear moisturiser with SPF all year round," she noted. "This would be my only answer to that 'What advice would you give your younger self?' question. Stop baking yourself in the sun, woman! Looking back on summer holiday photos, I can see how bad the pigmentation was in my face, so I did the worst thing you can do for your skin by sunbathing and not wearing SPF on a daily basis. The pigmentation is a lot better now, but I still have permanent damage in some places. I learned my lesson about the sun causing damage to your face the hard way."
"Other than that, I try to do the best for my skin (and my body) by drinking lots of water, keeping my skin moisturised (dry, dehydrated skin will age faster) and eating veggies," Catherine added. "It sounds boring, it sounds predictable and sounds like it's all been said before... But it's all true unfortunately. Boring but true!"
Smoking
The only one that benefits is the industry. An expensive way to harm yourself.
And the most selfish way, because smokers tend to just smoke around others, potentially putting their health at risk.
Load More Replies...My uncle is significantly younger than my mother, but looks twice her age. I think you can guess why.
My twin has been a chain smoker for all of his life practically and no one believes we are both 72 when they see us. Him, for sure. I quit when I was around 25 or so.
Yes! Especially in women. If you see all those lines around their mouth, you know she's a smoker.
Did not give up nicotine (vape), but haven't smoked for a year now. LOTS better.
Fking cancer. Have watched my brother in law age 30 years in a month.
My grandma looked largely the same for as long as I knew her, til the cancer. She aged with increased rapidity the longer it went on, and the last couple weeks were just...her withering away to nothing. I'm not bothered by anatomy generally, skeletons are cool and all, but I don't want to see a loved one's skeleton draped loosely in thin flesh ever again.
It is heartbreaking and sadly you are left with that last image in your mind.
Load More Replies...I was looking for this one. CANCER. I survived it 11 years ago, and I have considered myself prematurely aged since then. I was 46 when I was diagnosed, and when I finished chemo a year later, I was 60. You will never get that back. Fortunately, I still remain clean.
I hear you. I was diagnosed March 21 at 42 years old. I'm 44 this October, yet feel like an old woman. Cancer treatment is hell, but worth it to still be here x
Load More Replies...A lot of my aunts look a lot older than they are because of skin cancer
I've also aged by cancer. And the tiredness stays forever. Hope your brother survived
I 've passed through cancer... I gained lot of weight and before I was a beautiful Flight attendant... Now i dyed my hairy with black and that's how I feel when I see myself in the mirror... But, anyway, I look younger, fat, ugly, with black hairy, but younger...
Making eye contact with their cursed portrait that has been aging in their stead for centuries.
Fun fact: the book wasn’t called ‘The portrait of Dorian Gray’. It was called ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’
And he looked at his picture often through the story.
Load More Replies...We were also curious if Catherine believes most of us are too afraid of aging. "I don't know about most people, but for me personally, I'm in two minds about it," she shared. "In an ideal world, yes - I'd still have the face and body I had when I was 35 (or even 40). But that's not going to happen, aging is inevitable, and we should actually be thankful for aging as it means we're living longer (and who doesn't want that)."
"This 'fear' of aging is perpetuated by things like social media filters (they make me uneasy and I never use them), the beauty industry promoting products described as anti-ageing and celebrities erasing away any signs of ageing, and none of that sits right with me," she explained. "I read a statistic somewhere that suggested that about half of all women use a filter on social media, and whether that's to smooth away the signs of aging or perceived imperfections (or both), it's sad that we're not confident enough to show our true selves."
I think something not talked about a lot is mindset. Like if someone views themselves as old and shouldn't do this or that, they're making aging faster for themselves.
Affirmations can help.
This. At work I see so many people who have embraced old age and the need to be 'cared for' for relatively minor illnesses and disabilities and they actually bring forward their own demise by not keeping active and fit
That's soooo judgmental! It's true some people love complaining and exagerating just to get attention. But you never truly know what other people are going through. What's a "minor illness" for you may be a serious illness for another person, because every body is different, with a different level of tolerance to pain, and different reactions to painkillers/ anti-inflammatory drugs, etc. In the past, doctors used to say babies did not need anesthesia because they couldn't feel pain. Same with labour. For some women, giving birth is relatively easy and others die in the process. What about depression? How do you "measure" sadness and despair? Never judge what another person may be feeling, because you haven't a clue.
Load More Replies...We older folk often don't like the world around us (economic conditions, petty politics, climate concerns, etc) and many of us shut down, become reclusive, "set in our ways". I have seen brilliant work colleagues slowly fade in their retirement years. Auntie Mame said it best, about mindset: "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death". If you look around, there is always some enjoyment to be had. My motto for this year of my life: "Good times galore at 84!"..... (and it is up to me to find those good times)
This may make sense. Having a younger mindset would also affect how you decide to dress, have your hair, wear your makeup, if any, your personality and demeanor. I could dress like an executive with a power suit and sharp style. But I still like being comfy and showing off the cartoons I like. Even though I undergo some stress, it's fleeting. By the time I'm on the bus to go to home I'm chilled out. When I'm at home I feel free and happy. People are usually surprised I have an adult daughter because they say I look like I'm still in my 20s, early 30s.
As a 41 year old who still loves to take my bmx to the skatepark or grind some rails I highly agree.
My dad is 82 and my mom 75.....I think lol and they are two of the fittest people I know. Sure, they do things a little slower these days but they still do things a lot more people their age would do. Hell, even their friends. One of my mom's best friends (who I believe is slightly younger than my mom) asked my dad to move her washing machine the other day because a new one was on the way and she would have had to pay extra for removal. They did it.
I once heard the saying that "You don't stop doing things because you get old, you get old because you stop doing things". Obviously we're all going to age, but staying active helps enormously.
Hatred, harboring bad/sour feelings.
It took me a long time to get a handle on this one.
Load More Replies...I'm just gonna say this. Whilst holding bad feelings/grudge isn't nice- it's totally normal to be angry and upset if someone or something has upset you even if it's out your control. Being angry/sad is normal and working through the emotions makes us grow as a person. Some people are lucky and lead a life constantly bathed in sunshine others get rained on a lot, it's okay to have negative emotions. Some of us take longer to let go of a 'grudge' and that's okay
Yes of course! But holding on to a grudge on purpose is unhealthy. It makes you bitter and bitterness can wreck havoc on your health and in this context: make you unattractive
Load More Replies...I don't hold grudges. They're useless. When someone does me dirty, I just cut them from my life and move on. I dont believe in this thing that you have to forgive someone to move on. Cutting them out of my life serves the same purpose. Eff those a******s. I'm better off without them.
Frowning all the time. Especially if your smile lines are less prominent than your frown lines. You look like you're not going to be a friendly person to interact with. Although, some people just frown a lot because they're hard concentrators.
Tell me how to get beyond being disrespected? Boss implies I add no value (I do by comparison with coworkers). I am at the stage I just keep moving until next year, go on vacay and retire never to return.
If I was giving the magic pill to make me act better, it would be the one that makes me NOT hold a grudge. This behavior is sooooo counterproductive. Move one, deal with it, Let that S**t go, forgive and forget, forgive and get the hell outta there. Any of these.
Staying in a relationship or marriage you’re not happy in. It’s soul draining and the instant it’s over, there’s more relief than grieving for the end of it.
So true, couldn't agree more. recently ended one of these and didn't shed a tear, but have felt better than I've felt in years. I have tons more energy and smile way more. Even started a new business.
Absolutely. After 17yrs I left my narcissistic husband and it's the best feeling ever. It's hard as I feel I am literally starting over from the beginning, but it is fun trying to find out who the true me is. I have a new partner and my kids are so happy, all from me being strong and making that decision to leave xcx
If you just left your awful now ex sing it with me "Everybody's gonna love today, love today, love today. Everybody's gonna love today, love today. Love, love me. Love, love me...."
"However (and without wanting to contradict myself), I also believe that everyone should do what makes them happy," Catherine added. "But cosmetic procedures should be for the right reasons, not for someone else or to look younger because of a fear of aging or due to any kind of pressure from outside sources. Do something because you want to feel better within yourself, not due to a fear of anything."
Too dark of a tan (fake or real).
I've always been careful about sun exposure, I'm still pale as a wraith despite spending a great deal of time outdoors, but I've got cataracts. Genetics.
Load More Replies...I'm surprised a family member never got skin cancer the way she tanned. Tanning oils, SPF 2-3 (basically BBQ sauce), hours laying out in the sun, almost every day during summer. She got DARK. Her skin wasn't always tan. She used to be as fair as me. Now when we compare our skin she looks hella more dark than me during the winter, and after years of not being out in the sun anymore. Eventually your skin just doesn't go back to it's original hue and you get sun spots all over.
It’ll get her, it takes 15-20 years on average, but sometimes more, for the effects of sun damage to appear as skin cancer. I’m only 40 but very fair skinned and even though I’ve always been sunsafe, I live outdoors. I’ve been having topical chemotherapy treatments on and off for pre cancerous sun lesions since last year.

For people over 30, their hair style. I dont know why some people, especially women, develop a hair style and stick with it the rest of their lives.
Probably because it suits them and is easy to maintain without costly visits to the hairdresser that they can't afford.
I always hear women say of long-haired men, "they have such beautiful hair, and they don't even try or do anything to it! I have to do so much to my hair, and it still looks so tired!" Try doing what the men do: Stop using so much product, stop bleaching it, stop teasing it, torturing it, etc. Then tell me if that actually works. Or if you go bald on top like us guys.

Load More Replies...In my case, I have long hair since my 20s (I am a brunette with straight hair) and I do not want to change it because it is so easy to maintain it, no effort needed in the morning or any time of the day, it looks neat and tidy after washing without the blow-dry and still suits me; why would I want to change it?
Because they like the hairstyle on themselves. I don't know why so many people think everyone should make decisions about their own bodies by consulting them first. What looks good to you does not to someone else.
I tend to do the same basic style just at different lengths. I'll grow it out long enough to donate, then cut it to chin length, then do it all again. Part of it is that I like to donate my hair. Part of it is that my hair is pretty thin and very fine and doesn't hold style well unless I perm it, which I don't like to do because a) it's expensive and b) then I can't donate it. I have found that a basic long layer cut works for me, looks decent without a lot of [pointless, since it won't hold a style long anyway] styling, and grows out well without having to run to the salon every six weeks to get it cleaned up. I have neither the money, nor the time, nor the inclination to do a lot to my hair. And it wouldn't do me much good even if I did. Some people have bad hair days. I am having a bad hair life. But it grows fast, so I keep it low maintenance and donate it as often as I can. Everybody wins!
I used to change my hair style (length and shape) a couple times a year. Always something new. Some bad. Some cool. Some wouldn't look good on me now. About 4 years ago I found a haircut that looks gorgeous on me but it has to be cut a certain way. If not it doesn't look right. When I was younger, any sort of flaw in my hair I would just fluff it off as adding character or "it'll grow out", and when you're young you can pull off anything. When you're older those uneven, edges, short, blunt layers and half-assed framing fringes can really affect your overall appearance and self-confidence. You start knowing what you want, what looks good and manageable. I don't want to have to straighten my hair all the time and put loads of products in. So, if I find one style that works for me, I'm golden.
I have a "signature hair style" and don't plan on changing it any time soon. Just because one's of a certain age doesn't mean one should suddenly get the same old, tired "grandma" cut everyone else of that certain age is wearing. Yuck. BE YOURSELF.
When I get a haircut I watch them so I know where to trim until my next haircut. I change styles a couple times a year. Longer in the winter. Sometimes my auburn hair is purple or cherry red or red with purple lowlights. In high school my hair was long and straight like everyone else's and I found it boring. I have fun with my hair. I bought one of those hairdryer hairbrushes and it works great on thick hair.
Being president. Look at Obama's hair in 2008 vs 2016!
I often wonder how anyone in their right mind would ever want to be president.
Not just him - all of them. Look at the before and after photos of any President. From a simpleton like GWB to the most striking example, President Lincoln.
I was thinking this as I scrolled and it made the list. All presidents age so much during their terms.
Not just presidents. Look at Canada's Prime Minister. Haven't heard of women swooning over him since the first election he won.
The vitriol that man had to endure from his successor (Orange God) along with like minded syncophants. He was not the best, nor the worst, but his heart was what caused me to support him. Hell, John Bohner liked the guy no matter what he said.
Catherine also says she's positive about the future. "I think that things are changing - albeit slowly - in terms of attitudes towards getting older and aging," she told Bored Panda. "Brands are using older models more, advertising campaigns are using less airbrushing and showing real skin texture, and fewer people think that 40, 50 or 60 is 'old.'"
"I'd like to see the beauty industry to drop the term 'anti-aging' and use 'optimum ageing' or similar - to drop the negative connotations," Catherine added. "I'd like us to say 'older people' instead of 'old man' or 'old lady' - it just sounds a little more respectful, don't you think? There's a long way to go, though, before aging is no longer seen as something to fight, but instead, something to celebrate!"

Depression or general unhappiness in life
Being homeless. It’ll make you mature right fast it will.
Good wishes to all who suffer. I always wonder what billionaires do with those extra 57 bedrooms in their 60 bedroom mansions.
Homelessness is horrible. I once read that there are enough houses that sit empty to house the entire homeless population in America! What a waste.
Being the victim of a crime, and then having to spend the next two years of your life attending monthly hearings until a court date is decided. Watching the legal system not protect you when he violates restraining orders, gets a DUI and visibly deteriorates, coming to court dirtier and more unkempt each time. Losing friends because they like the offender better and just can't see...
is that supposed to be a courtrooms? ive never seen a crucifix on the wall , of a courtroom before.

The way you dress
Yeah loin cloths are the most classic and they never go out of style. ;)
Load More Replies...Wear what you want, don't let people set boundaries for wearing fun or youthful clothing because someone who means nothing to you sets arbitrary rules or may look down on you. I spend most of my time in t-shirts, character Chucks & Vans, Docs, Loungefly backpacks, jeans, and shorts. IDGAF if anyone thinks it inappropriate at my age I dress fun because life should be fun. I'm almost 70, and still get paid well to dress in cool boho clothing & play bass in rock bands and as a backup singer. I can dress very classy when I feel like it, but otherwise I say enjoy life, have fun.
I wanna be like you when I grow up. Just bought my first pair of Docs last week (cuz I could finally afford Docs)! I’m 45 🧡
Load More Replies...Wear what flatters your figure and looks dignified without looking frumpy. Don't wear shapeless clothes. Don't cover too much. Don't for goodness' sake dress childishly (cartoon, childish prints, childish styles), or like a teenager (thinking bare midriffs and miniskirts). You won't look younger, you just won't be taken seriously. Do you have a right? - yes, but just don't do it to yourself!
I dress how I want to dress without requiring anyone else's approval.

(Multiple) tooth loss
I have lost many teeth and I am so self conscious. I don't have the money to repair it and I have to make sure I don't smile too big. I used to love to smile and I miss it.
Me too, alcoholism ruined some of my teeth and now I’m scared to smile :( if I win the lottery I’ll buy both of us new teeth!
Load More Replies...Knew of 2 older men that lost their teeth and ended up killing them selves in part because of being unable to fix their teeth due to being poor. It affected their health in terms of nutrition and I suspect infection. They felt embarrassed around people, especially women, and couldn’t land jobs. Both were talented. One was once a contemporary of Bob Dylan and even at 70 had an amazing voice and guitar style. I only found out about their issues with their teeth after they were dead. No Go Fund Me back then either.
That is why it is pertinent to begin to take care of your teeth when you are young.
CHILDREN. My boobs have aged 20 years.
Children do age you but I wouldn’t change the last 27 years of my life for anything.
Exactly. Can't blame the kiddos for our changing bodies. A woman's body doesn't stay young and supple, nor perky, for long. That's just life, though, and decent men really don't care either way. If they do, they're a teenager.
Load More Replies...The good news is that even as we get older, guys still look at our boobs. The bad news is they have to squat down first. 🤭 🤣
I just did 4 years in prison and that was f*****g stressful. I feel like I’ve aged a lot
Cannot upvote this enough. I hope that you have good help to make a fresh start.
Load More Replies...I knew a guy in prison was sent to the "hole" for 6 months. When he went in his hair was black, when he got out of the "hole" his hair had turned completely white.
If you are truly expecting a reply from the OP I suggest asking this on the original Reddit thread. It's only 9 days old so you should be able to get an answer.
Load More Replies...You'd be disturbed how little it can take to land in prison. You don't have to commit a crime. Just be somewhere at the wrong time, have a similar description as a suspect (if that) and then be thrown into a corrupted trial.
Load More Replies...hair loss. Not me personally but I used to work with a guy who I swore was like 35, and he was 19. Poor kid.
Shave it and grow a majestic beard. Bald men are sexy; balding men are not. I have no idea why this is, but I stand by it.
My hair started falling out in weird spots. So I fired every hair on my head by shaving it. Never looked back
Yeah my brother's hair started receding as a teen. He looks about ten years older than me but he's actually younger.
Stress, grief, childhood trauma. It can also ruin your life and life of the people around you.
You know, a lot of things on this list have made me realize how lucky I am. Yes, I've been through horrific things, and a lot of it is due to family. But also due to family is the great genes that have kept me looking youthful, even into middle age.
Weight loss sometimes adds way more wrinkles.
Particularly if a person is "puffy" - my dad after he quit alcohol and dropped 60lbs. He's looking a bit better now honestly, but that significant weight loss coupled with the swelling reduction had him very wrinkly for a bit. He's not very old so his skin reverted a fair bit and he stays hydrated.
I may be wrong, but stomach stapling or gastric bypass make many who undergo it look WAY older. And it ain't because the face is thinner, they just look exhausted.
It would because now they have to restrict their diet and the amount of food they can eat.
Load More Replies...I lost a bunch of weight over the past year and my cheeks stopped sagging... but the vertical lines around my nose and mouth went nuts. To be perfectly honest, I'm almost 65 so I've had a really good run skin-wise. But I still want to do something about those lines - filler?
For men, a moustache. If you look back at the 1980s, you have 25-30 year old men look like they're in their 40s, and the same is happening again, now. Women - too much makeup
I wish some people would know that what they saw online is not going to be how it turns out in real life. All that powder and goop accentuates all the dry skin, pores and wrinkles on your face. But, you know, with more colour and shimmer. Oh, and if you're over 40, that black eyeliner starts looking like a child traced around your eyes.
For real, when I was about 35yo, my body decided that I was finally old enough to grow a mustache and goatee. At that time, I finally stopped getting carded when I tried to buy beer and cigarettes. I'm in my early 40s now, and my hair is turning silver. I don't get carded no matter what, but I'm happy being a silver fox!
Unless you're a drag queen or currently in a theatre production, lighten up on the makeup, ffs. Y'all trying to look like the same alien. It gives Uncanny Valley.
Fri. Sept 29th is my last day of work. I will be retired. Just started to grow a mustache. Won't mind if I look older. I look young for my age. But never been married or had children either.
What comes to my mind when I see a guy with a mustache is that he looks like a porn star from the seventies.
I have been through war and i also lost my sister to a car accident, fair to say im 39 but i look 60.

Kids. Kids instantly age people. I have proof of it. I had kids before my twin sister did. I looked 10 years older than her. Then she had kids and we evened out. And yet the compelling narrative in the US is that SAHMs do nothing all day 🙄🙄🙄 yeah if that s**t ages you by 10 years, there’s definitely a lot of work and stress there.
It's a job that doesn't end. I had to go back to work for my own sanity. Then stay at home mom's tried to make me feel guilty in doing that. So not only was I defensive about being a working mom I also felt bad because I did miss my kids. It was so stressful.
Reminiscing about the show "Dinosaurs"
Thank god I'm to old to have seen this one, but I feel younger than them that did :)
I think I was in grad school when this came on...now that's feeling old, LOL.
Troubleshooting printer problems. I swear these devilish machines only exist to trigger me to smithereens.
When clearing a paper jam, If the paper tears, keep all of the pieces so you can assemble them like a puzzle. This lets you know that you got all of the paper out of the machine. The tiniest scrap of paper can bring a machine the size of the average sedan to its mechanical knees. Signed, A Xerox Document University graduate.
Technology in general. There's something about a machine preventing you from getting what you need to get done with someone on your back demanding why it's not done yet.
I quite enjoyed it when I worked in an office. I know, I'm weird. If I heard that beep beep alarm sound, I would say "How do you need tickling today, my princess?" :D :D

Finding out a band you listened to when they first came out is getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
🤣🤣🤣 🙈 this hits close to home. My husband and I were at a Manowar concert last month and he asks me : "What's up with Joey deMaio, he moves like my Grandpa used to?" My answer was: "Schatzi, I hate to tell you, but WE ARE OLD! And he's old as well. He gets to move like a grandpa, he is 69 years old. And I'm sure with 69 we couldn't do what he does on stage." 😅🙈 yes, we are old...
OMG, someone who actually knows who Manowar is. \m/\m/ Don't you love their version of Nessun dorma. Eric Adams' voice is amazing.

When I was younger, we had a radio station that would play the "oldies", music from the 50s/60s, and a station that played "classic rock", the best rock from the 60s-80s, it was awesome! Now if I tune to the "oldies/classic rock" station, I get the songs I listened to in the 90s.

Platinum blonde hair. I swear it enhances every single line you have in your face even if you're younger.
On the flip side, when you allow yourself to go grey it can be a delightful change! I used to have very dark, brown hair. I love being silver now. It suits me and looks great.
My mom went gray very young, and dyed her hair for many years. When convinced her to stop dyeing she lost some years. My dad had jet black hair till he died, and I'm in between: I've been going gray slowly for years. Don't care, it is what it is.
Load More Replies...Any extreme hair color can age you, jet black also, unless it's your natural color, bright colors if you are over 40 too.
I would love to go gray. My roots are coming in gray, but it's a dirty gray. Picture the dust pan when you get done sweeping. Then my stylist says all the grays I like are too light, and my hair won't handle a bleach process.
Platinum, red-red, and black are the hardest hair colors to wear according to my stylist. I got lucky when I started dying mine blue-black because it brought out the pinks in my skin.
I've noticed a number of celebrity women who have obviously dyed their hair to platinum and it just doesn't work with their natural skin tone - it makes them looked washed out. And then they add the "raccoon-look" eye makeup and it's even worse. It's as though there are two block holes on their faces. But when I picture them as a brunette, they're really beautiful, especially if they tone down the eye makeup.
I've noticed it too! There are some skin tones that platinum blonde just doesn't work for, just as much as I can't pull off black hair. Unfortunately sometimes that's a lesson you find out the hard way lol!

Horrible trend. All these famous people having this done look skeletal to me. 💀
I youth, pictures usually show chubby cheeks. I don't understand why you want to appear older.
Overuse of filler as well as some plastic surgeries, buccal fat removal for example. So many people that are only in their 20s get this stuff in an attempt to look younger, more snatched, etc. It ends up making them look 15-20 years older a lot of the time.
It makes everyone look the same. In this day and age, I thought it was okay to be different.
So true! I think that's why I have trouble remembering who is who in the world of celebrities.

In my life, college allowed me to meet people with other ideas and values. It allowed me to have a better understanding of other ideas and be open to other opinions.
Agreed! I went back to school in my late 50s. I had classmates from around the world. I truly enjoyed the experience of having so many different countries and cultures represented in my classes. I found it fascinating and I suspect I wouldn't have had the same experience had I attended college 30 years earlier.

Working in stressful environments
Night shifts
I did too when the economy crashed. It took years to get back to normal.
Load More Replies...Even worse: rotating shifts. If you work at night you can get some kind of routine, but rotating shifts force you body to adjust to a new schedule every few days. It should be forbidden. It's terrible for the worker's health.
This needs to be higher. Working the graveyard shift puts a trememdous amount of stress on your body and can cause cardiovascular issues. My father died of a heart attack at 41 years old after working Graveyard for most of his adult life.
Trauma
Night shifts in the emergency department.
A lot of folks said how they enjoy working in ER and how it’s almost rejuvenating for them. Don’t get me wrong, ER can be thrilling, it can give you energy. That can really be true when you have a good team behind you, good working conditions and a “functional” hospital and healthcare system. Having said that, things that were stressful for me were mostly when you feel powerless in tough situations. When we would keep getting more and more patients and simply didn’t have enough beds in the hospital, so the specialist had to call all of the departments and asking for personal favors to admit a seriously ill patient. Stuff like that happened all the time and those were the things that drain you. Personally, I was working regular ER during my internship, now i am a specialist of child and adolescent psychiatry. During my 5 year residency, I regularly worked in the psych emergency, which was less crowded than regular ER, i could often get a few hours of sleep in. But in such departments, things are interesting as far as work load: you don’t get the next or previous day off. Which means that you start your regular shift on Monday morning 8am till 4 pm, start night shift from 4pm Monday till 8am Tuesday and then have your regular Tuesday shift from 8 am till 4 pm. If you’re on during the weekend? You come in Sunday at 8 am and you’re the on MD till Monday 8 am and then “enjoy” your regular Monday 8 - 4. Fun times. Sure, the extra money comes in really handy, but… I’m not sure it’s worth it. The last 6 months I didn’t have to do these shifts and honestly, I don’t really miss them. So yeah, they can fun and active and you do a lot interesting things, but there are many “ifs” to make that a sustainable way of life.
Am i the only one that saw the pic they added and was like "mmm no way.. those people would never in their right mind wear heals or dress shoes to work in the hospital".. shiny black shoes and no socks.... no no no

Poorly applied makeup, particularly foundation. I know, because I suck at applying foundation!
Me, too! My skin is so oily that if I put makeup on, I look really pretty for about an hour, and then I look like I'm melting. I spent so much time and money trying to find make-up that would work for me (matte is lie!). It was so freeing when I finally decided to just stop. I usually use a colored lip gloss, and sometimes I throw on some mascara if I feel like it, but other than that, I just... don't. And it's pretty awesome!
