Welcome to the world of filters where looks are everything, and everything else is nothing. While there are many exceptions, social media is still notorious for breeding and celebrating vanity, from boosting your ego to making others (and yourself included) feel miserable.
But sometimes it’s too much even for Instagram. You see, some people airbrush and edit their pictures beyond the acceptable norm and the result is, well, reality-bending. The subreddit “Instagram Reality” is calling out those instances by sharing pictures of influencers taking editing a step, or rather a mile, too far.

Cystic acne is a horrible condition.It's not caused by anything, it just happens, like any other condition.It took over two years of treatments for my child to be cured.The psychological effect was just tough.Thank goodness for treatments available.

That looks so painful. I've always been so grateful my skin has been mostly clear my whole life, it's far from perfect and I have weird pale freckles that tend to make my skin look blemished when it isn't. I'm 40 and still get occasional spots and boy does my skin like to save them up and explode in one giant painful mountain of yuck. I do find my skin starts to act up if I eat dairy so I tend to avoid it, my kids are the same - dairy hates our skin

I'm 50 and still get minor breakouts(at least one spot on/right beside my nose and/or chin almost every day. Very rarely on my forehead, next to an ear or a cheek. Yay, hormones.

The left one honestly looks a bit forgettable to me because it just looks so... common. You see like pics of people like that online all. the. time. I automatically filter it into my "fake artistic picture" category and kind of dismiss it. The one on the right looks more real, and so much more eye-catching, I think "wow, what gorgeous hair and style, she's so striking."

I guess I'm out of the loop on this but when did having much bigger thighs than you really have become desirable? For the last 50 or 60 years, thighs that actually touched each other were considered "fat". That was even more unrealistic, but can't we finally come to an agreement that whatever your body is, it's fine?

And it’s celebrity culture. Both share the insatiable hunger for an idealized image, but also the need to deliver substance and make it interesting for the viewers.
So Bored Panda reached out to Claire Sisco King, the Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Vanderbilt University who happily shared some very interesting insights into the over-the-top world of celebrities and influencers.

All of Hollywood wants to be perpetual and look like they're in their 20's. Career pends on the line of youth and beauty, and this may be the root of depression, substance abuse, and suicide when expectations are no longer met. The limelight is soul crushing, especially when they start so young, if they don't have a sensible PR with good advise and psychological support, it can be a recipe.

This makes me so sad... I've been a huge, huge fan of her since I was 7 (I'm 46 now). She achieved everything in the music industry, opened the path for the following female artist, and created some of the best songs and videos of the last 30 years. She doesn't need to demonstrate anything more. I thought she was much smarter than this. And makes me sad that the new generations will only know her for this, this joke of the woman she has been, and not for her tremendous legacy. I've stopped following her cause I cannot see this, I want to keep the good Madonna, the one that made me happy along this years

This is the beauty industry's fault. People wouldn't be afraid to age if it weren't for the monetization of self-esteem. Almost every facet of society erases women who've aged past 45. People who do this aren't the disease, they're a symptom.

It's her choice, obviously, but lines and wrinkles are so much prettier on a 63 yr old woman than all that stretched skin. I will always adore Madonna, but this is almost anathema. Her Drs should be sued for malpractice- instead, they continued to take her money and cut her up. Any decent plastic surgeon knows how when you stop. But whoever did this to her must have really wanted a bigger boat. I feel sorry for her, honestly. She needs to learn how to relax and enjoy her position...the woman is an ICON (and TBH I'm not a big fan of her music but even still... In my opinion, it's not a problem at all to have fun with filters or try to make your pictures have different lighting and coloring. It's all fun. A lot of people think just using a filter makes a person insecure. That's not true. The problem arises when pop culture and the internet upholds narrow and unrealistic standards of beauty. When only a certain kind of beauty is celebrated and others are deemed ugly, young people, particularly teenagers want to feel included by trying to fit into that unrealistic mould. When they only see a certain type of physical appearance worthy of fitting society's perception of beauty, they desperately try to follow it. When they're bullied for their skinny or overweight bodies by their classmates, they also want to feel acknowledged. You can't force a very narrow standard of beauty on impressionable minds for decades and not expect them to have self esteem issues.

This could just be aspect skewing. Some phones do this automatically. I had one that did this to the edges of all pics and I couldn't fix it. The foot farthest from the edge looks the most normal.

That she isn’t capable of seeing the difference or, at least, admitting there is a difference is delusional. I’ve known a handful of people -both women and men- who filter the hell out of their photos to the point they don’t even remotely resemble themselves. They’re adamant the filters are simply minor touch ups with hardly any difference. I’m concerned for their mental health not because of their obsession with filtering, but because they can’t tell the difference when they look in the mirror or at the unfiltered picture.

She is nuts. More and more plastic surgery all the time. She is supposedly bankrupt and owes millions to creditors but is always off on holiday abroad and paying for a lot of plastic surgery. She has 5 kids. The eldest is in a residential care home, older two live with their dad full-time and her youngest two live with their dad. She sees them occasionally when she has time out of her busy schedule of holidays and plastic surgeries. In trouble with the police time and time again and never receives any jail time. Kinoko --- Its called a 'soft focus'. A fuzzy lens filter that professional portrait photographers use with women 'of a certain age.' The filter helps soften any wrinkles that will definitely be easily seen in portrait (close up) photography. --- Back in the day I used to be a photographer for a portrait photography company. We were instructed to use it with, for sure, women 60 and over. Maybe 50 and over. You take pictures of the whole family, and then you take individual pictures of each person and you used the filter on the older woman for sure. Then she gets a portrait of her that looks better than she expects and doesn't know (or care) why, then she orders extra copies of that. They use it in TV also, I noticed it when watching Grace and Frankie. While you are watching you will notice Jane Fonda will be softened, and then the camera switches to the person she is speaking to and that person is NOT softened, then they switch back to Jane, etc. It is kind of weird to watch. Fuzzy, not fuzzy, fuzzy, not fuzzy.

She knows.. The filtered picks are some years old. She has luckily reverted to being her natural herself. Being on Teen Mom affected her self-esteem severely. You wouldn't believe the horrible comments about her natural look she received on social media during the series. Some along the line: You're probably a horrible mother because your teeth are ugly. Or "you look like s**t because your clothes are from the Danish equivalent to Walmart" The culture around edited photos starts with our selves. We tend to forget that when we point out fingers at someone. At least three fingers are pointing right back at our sorry ar&es. We're the one's who follow those "influencers" with the less that natural looks... So she knows... But it took some time and some mental hardship to get to where she is now.

I think the lesson to be learned from this trend is that these people, for whatever reason, feel like they are not ok as they are, and that is very sad and disturbing, as much as it is scary. It, in my opinion at least, is as destructive as an eating disorder. We are all who we are, and we are all important and beautiful and worthy just by being ourselves.

Yes, the last few weeks are often the worst. And the following days after childbirth no matter how you delivered. You can hold so much fluids, really uncomfortable and you can be almost unrecognizable. Usually goes away pretty quickly though. So not as unrealistic as it may seem.

I've worked on costumes in a shampoo commercial in India. By default, most actresses add extensions to their hair to make look it more thick. For this shoot, she went on set with the usual extensions and they sent her back to add another set of them. This happened 4 more times. The shoot was on hold because the hair stylist didn't have that many. We had to wait around till someone got the extra pieces.

It maybe the hazy filter they have used on woman for generations. Close ups were mildly or more, made fuzzy. It lessened pores and wrinkles.

The unedited ones are actually better than the edited ones. I prefer natural beauty. I don't like makeup, so I don't wear it. I've been told I need to wear makeup, because I'm ugly and not a real woman without it. However, I notice these people are pretty much all misogynistic men who believe that women should always strive to please men, including looking aesthetically pleasing to them. These people also condemn me for not liking to shave and having body hair, think I should obsess over my weight and appearance, and say my acne makes me ugly, and that I should be obsessed with getting rid of it.

Whenever I see these, it just makes me sad. Why can't people just love their natural selves? I know its difficult, I struggled for year with my own body image. I've since learned to love myself exactly as I am today. Also, I understand wanting to put the best version of yourself out there, but when the best version of yourself isn't anywhere near your authentic self, it defeats the purpose.

I know there’s a pressure to ‘look your best’ and that encourages people to photoshop or otherwise edit images but I find myself hoping that they find the inner peace and confidence to be themselves and comfortable in their own skin. You are you, that makes you unique and amazing, yes dye your hair, pluck your eyebrows, use makeup whatever floats your boat but be true to yourself and stay beautiful, don’t allow society or your peers force you to digitally enhance you, it ends up losing your energy and your unique look that’s attached to who you are. I love people, they all have a story to tell, they all have a place to be and a claim for beauty, I want you to share that not some pixelated version of you. You are amazing and valuable, hold onto that ❤️❤️

Feels like these people don’t hear enough about how beautiful they are in real life. Sad to mention, but people make them fake themselves by criticizing their looks, and people are criticizing them for faking their looks. Feels like a vicious cycle(( Both does no good but damages already unhealthy psychological state of an individual. Heh, I guess the only remedy is to be kind to others and compliment them on their features, and I mean not Kim Kardashian, but the very people around us right now)
