We also reached out to visual artist Chloe Giordano and author/embroidery artist Michelle Staub to learn more about getting into embroidery in case anyone ends up feeling inspired by the creations on display here. Years ago I did something similar on a BF's jacket. He work it to the hummingbird display in SD and they drove him nuts trying to sip from them.
Another thing I do is only use 6" hoops. I find they don't make my hand and wrist as sore as holding a larger hoop does. One more thing - DMC floss is well worth the expense. You are creating art. Cheaper flosses may not be evenly dyed and may run/bleed, if they get wet. I took a picture of my spring tension hoop but don't see how to upload the picture.
This is obviously a site for whatI call "regular" embroidery. I prefer counted cross stich. These projects are all gorgeous. Whether you keepem yourself or give them as gifts, be sure to always take a picture of your work and keep it in an album of your projects. I made some baby bibs for my cousin, about 30 years ago and neglected to take photos, something I've kicked myself for, ever since. I noticed some comments about hoops. always found the knurled knows on the wooden hoops to be very hard on my fingertips, and that they never seemed to hold the fabric securely. Then, one day, I discovered spring-tension hoops, like the one below. They hold the fabric tightly and getting them on is as easy as pinching the two raised parts of the metal. If it does seem to loosen as you go on, simply take the hoop apart and spread out the metal part a bit and it will fit tightly again.
Stunning and amazingly intricate. I could not muster up the patience to finish this kind of design. Just beautiful 😯🙂

To the OP....if a gun were put to your head and you were told: “I want to buy this, what’s your price?!?”, what would be your answer?!? I know I could have just asked you what would be your price for this jacket, but I figured the only way you’d ever come up with an amount would be if a gun were put to your head, forcing you to come up with a figure!!! And please do make it somewhat realistic—please don’t say: a gazillion dollars!! Nor say: gun or no gun, I’d never ever sell it!! I’m just really curious to know what your price would be if you either made another one, or, if you actually did decide to sell it!!! Enquiring minds want to know!!!!!
This jacket is absolutely stunning! When I was in college in the '70s, I used to embroider flowers and butterflies on blue work shirts as gifts for friends. My work was nowhere near as beautiful as this.

We started by asking where a beginner should start looking for resources and guides, as the internet is full of videos and instructions. Michelle Staub suggested that people just pick something and get to work on it. “I would recommend starting with a full embroidery kit or a pattern. With a kit, you’ll receive all of the materials you need and won’t have to go out and get all of your own thread colors and fabric. You may even end up with some leftover thread for future projects. If you can, avoid buying kits sold on Amazon because almost all of them contain stolen designs from other embroidery artists.”
“It’s best to buy kits from shops on Etsy to support small businesses. You can also find embroidery kits at craft stores. You may also choose to just get a pattern and source all of the materials yourself. You can find digital embroidery patterns on Etsy, or there is a large collection of free ones on DMC.com. If you’re looking to learn a wide range of different embroidery stitches then look for something called an embroidery sampler. If you’re a visual learner and like to follow along with videos, Youtube is a great place to find tutorials for different embroidery stitches. There are also online courses that teach embroidery that you can pay to take.”

Some beginners say they fear wasting materials or aren’t sure about buying quality yarn and threads. Chloe Giordano suggested that “If you're not intending to sell the embroidery I think there's nothing wrong with opting for cheaper materials, as you'll be less worried about making mistakes and 'ruining' supplies. I always recommend just diving in, experimenting with different styles, and accepting that you'll make mistakes along the way, I messed up a lot of embroideries before I got to the good ones!”

Michelle Staub had similar thoughts. “The great thing about embroidery is that you can use a wide range of different fabrics, thread, hoops, and needles and it can all work. However, there is a difference in quality between brands of thread. The most common brands are DMC, Anchor, and Cosmo. Other brands may fray as you work and may not be colorfast. In my opinion, it’s worth it to buy the name brand thread since the quality is the best and one skein of thread will last you some time.”

“As far as needles, fabric, and hoops, it is all pretty similar. A generic multi-size pack of embroidery needles will last you some time. You can embroider on literally anything from cotton, linen, and felt, to even your clothing. And as long as your hoop can hold your fabric tight you’re good to go! You can find these items in craft stores or even secondhand thrift stores. My first-ever projects were stitched on an old canvas chair slipcover that I found at a thrift store and cut up,” she added, clarifying some details that could be useful for beginners.

Michelle Staub told us that “I think people are afraid to start learning embroidery because they’re worried their project won’t end up “perfect.” I will tell you that there are mistakes in every embroidery you see but only the stitcher will be able to tell you where they are! The only way you will be able to improve with embroidery is if you actually do it and practice. And the best way of learning is to just try it and learn from your mistakes as you go!”

We also asked the team at the Kitschy Stitcher about the importance of material quality and how much of a headache should it be to novice embroidery enthusiasts. "One of my favorite things about hand embroidery is that you don't need fancy supplies to get started! If you're just learning for yourself as a hobby, everything you need is at any local craft store. You can buy a hoop, fabric, and thread all for around $5."
"If you want to begin selling your work down the road, then you could invest in nicer quality embroidery hoops, etc. Any basic embroidery hoop, embroidery needle, and cotton fabric will do, though! As for the thread, I've always used DMC brand thread which is at all the major craft stores. I've even used the 97cent fat-quarter fabric samples from Walmart to create some beautifully stitched pieces. (Just remember to stay away from stretchy fabric because it can warp your embroidery design as it moves when you stitch onto it! I always go for either a sturdy Cotton or a Linen blend fabric.)" My mum, who passed away in January, was absolutely brilliant at embroidery.
When I had to go through her stuff, I found many I really liked. My dad is having one framed for me.
But what amazed me the most -- there was an embroidered piece in her collection that wasn't done by her... but by ME. Some 30 years ago. And she kept it all that time.
This is the one being framed. (It's about A3 size, and will get pride of place.) IMG-202301...a-jpeg.jpg

I wish I had a portion of the talent that these people have!! I'm still on stamped cross stitch I do love it though! It is getting harder and harder to find good patterns in stamped.

I made a bear patch just teaching myself. I love finding sets in thrift stores and using the fabric as book covers.
I am truly blown away by the creativity and talent from all of the artists in this thread. These works of art are simply amazing!
They make kits that come with everything you need including the pattern already on the fabric and instructions on how to do the different types of stitches and where. That's how I started out with embroidery. 10/10 recommend those if you want to learn.

I absolutely loved this post. All of these pieces were so amazing. It's nice to know that embroidery is not a lost art. As long as people continue doing what they love. The details, the colors. How does there get to be so much talent and imagination in the world? I really wanted to comment on every one of them, but I'd be using the same words over and over-- wow, beautiful, amazing, great colors, etc, etc. Finally, some content that shows creativity, and not feuding inlaws, etc. Thanks BP., for providing a breath of fresh air.
If i had the motivation I'd learn embroidery and I've thought about this for a while too. Mostly for clothes I wear at home to make them more fun. If I theoretically got good at it I could with clothes I actually wear outside too
