I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News So I Illustrated The Best News Of 2018 (And Recent Years)
I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.
I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!
Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.
Lots of legislation disincentivizes good behaviour and it's really unfortunate.
Load More Replies...I have asked UK supermarkets why they throw away food instead of donating it. I was told that it's illegal for them to donate any food which is one day past it's "best before" date, because it could cause illness, so it is all thrown away. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Yoghurt, sure. But something like bread, or pasta, as long as it's not mouldy - surely homeless people getting slightly stale food is better than no food? Yes good quality food is better but then there goes this whole topic.
Actually, yoghurt is still edible after that date. I believe this law mostly addresses wasted fresh food, for instance slightly squished vegetables that supermarkets won't sell but that local charities could still prepare in a way that no one sees the difference.
Load More Replies...Where I live (CO,USA) some of the grocery stores, and Mom and Pop bakeries donate food to nonprofits. Walmart will not. They throw away perfectly good food, for fear of liability. When I worked for 7-11, they threw away food instead of giving it away. So their minimum wage employees are tossing food that they would be very happy to be able to take home. We were told to open packages and empty the food in the trash, and spray disinfectant on it. This was to discourage homeless people from pulling it out of the trash. I've seen homeless people pull food out of the trash, when they have no idea if it is safe to eat. None of it makes sense to me.
I'm from France. Just so you know, this new law came from a petition that got 1 million signature in 48hours and the law came in only 4 months after this petition. Super fast and surprising move !
The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.
Thank you for providing a brand name! I'll look for that next time I'm buying beer
Load More Replies...F**k yeah! I hope this sort of thing can spread. What about for plastic shopping bags?
I live in Jamaica and as of January 1; plastic bags, straws, Styrofoams etc, will be completely banned and replaced with completely biodegradable alternatives. Its awesome when there's so many countries and places contributing to this
Load More Replies...OK this is the best news EVER!!! And I haven't heard a word about it until right now. What the hell? I'm appalled that this is not well known. I'm telling everyone I know. Thank you!
wow I love that, because I always cut the the rings before put them in recycle container
I would still cut the rings, not all companies will be using this technology, yet. It would be nice if Congress passed a bill mandating it though.
Load More Replies...When the bees die the humans die. People dont care about this humble creature but they will once we have no crops!
Yep but besides French governement is doing so bad towards all kinds of environmental topics. Rejecting any action against animal suffering. Cutting state funds to environmental protection and research. Authorizing prospects for a giant gold mine in the rainforest and offshore oil extraction in French Guyane. So much real bad news, b******t and greenwashing besides that good news for the bees.
Lol... Nope! The government loves too much Monsanto/Bayer and authorised pesticides for 5 other years, killing again and again the bees
Except in America we seem to only be worried about the honey bee which we have domesticated and it makes profit for us. Honey bees are an invasive species and since we harbor a particular liking for them, we give them an advantage and they are and will continue to kill off most, if not all native bee populations. That is our actual problem. We have no shortage of bees, we just have a surplus of an invasive species that we somehow favor and it's detrimental to our much in danger native bee population
The problem is not caused by honey bees. It's us planting monocultures everywhere.
Load More Replies...France leads in banning things that are harmful to us or the environment.
Yes! I hate the argument that "sanitary products are a luxury." They are not, do you want blood all over your pants? All over your house?
all over your city buses, your trains, your office chairs, your waiting room benches
Load More Replies...Menstruation is normal and natural. If women did not bleed, the human race would die off. The blood is a sign that the woman did not conceive that month. These are basic facts. Women should not be made to feel ashamed for needing sanitary products, and should not be denied them. It's extremely degrading to women (and supremely ignorant) for a man to say "just hold it." When I read that, I just laughed out loud.
Fantastic that they acknowledge it's a basic necessity and support women of low means
I agree with this wholeheartedly, but at this time, I feel like we should *also* be advocating for more women to use reusable sanitary products like menstrual cups and cloth pads. Both for monetary and environmental reasons. I know not everybody can use them, for lots of reasons, but I also think a lot of people just don't even realize they could be using them or that they are even a thing.
If you're poor enough that you can't afford sanitary products, then it's a good bet that you also don't have access to laundry facilities. Menstrual cups are a joke. Cloth pads are leaky diapers that are more trouble than they're worth. ...///... If you want to stuff moss down your pants, knock yourself out. If you'd ever been poor, you'd know better.
Load More Replies...This needs to be enforced in America along with free birth control for the uninsured with underlying issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome. I pay out of pocket for everything. America needs to get with the God damned times
I agree with everything except the cussword. I'm not religious, I just don't like that word.
Load More Replies...Also the UK (including Scotland) donates all proceeds from sales tax levied on sanitary products to women's charities. This is because up until October 2018 under European Union law it was impossible to make sanitary products sales tax exempt.
I love tigers. One of the few wild cats that are mostly solitary and love water, just like me
Everyone should learn about Jadav "Molai" Payeng. Google it if you can. He is amazing!!!!
I read that without the “million” so I was like ‘they planted 66 trees? Good for them....’ but then I read it more closely. That’s amazing! Good on those 1.5 million people!
If you look at it this way: 1 person planted almost 4 trees in an hour. 1 tree was planted in 15 minutes. Faster than me getting ready in the morning. Wow! Amazing work! 😱🌲
The scale of this initiative is incredible, there are so many good people out there who make a difference
Wooooooow..... Imagine the whole world doing it. If only all people cared... <3
And did they collect the Guinness Wordl Records award money to plant even some more? If not, they certainly should!
I'm more impressed there is cell service in rural Rwanda. I barely have any bars in my apartment in San Diego.
My first thought--> Thats so cool......My second thought--> Rwanda sounds like Wakanda
Yay! I donate blood when I can. I hope some of my blood goes to the people who need it
As much as I love the concept, I have an irrational fear of packages dropping from the sky :)
Pigs, cows and chicken are also friends, not food
Load More Replies...Never understood why rabbits are okay to eat, or keep as pets, horses are intelligent and have personalities but you can still eat them, cows are pretty much disposable, yet you get crucified for eating a dog. Meat eaters who lose their s**t when people eat dogs need to take a logic 101 course.
I have to agree. I love my dog more than anything, but meat is meat. You'd get attached to a chicken or a cow the same way as a dog or cat if they were a pet, but you still eat their meat if it comes from a farm, so how is a dog different? Either you eat no meat or accept any meat as eatable. I understand being against the way those dogs are kept and treated in some farms... but being against eating dogs just because they are dogs seems illogical. I think it would be better if we could switch to insects since it's most environmental friendly.
Load More Replies...Anyone here criticizing the consumption of dogs but are also consuming chickens, cows, or pigs is a damn hypocrite.
It is the conditions they are kept in. You cannot stop ethnic people from eating whatever they wish. Same as us Westerners consume meat. Just be kind and humane
Load More Replies...It's interesting how different countries distinguish between food animals and friend animals. I'm unable to see a qualitative difference between a cow and a horse, but people are find eating one and not the other. Same goes for most animals. I've no desire to eat any of them myself.
Because we value things in different ways, for different reasons.
Load More Replies...It's all relative. In India eating cows is frowned on but in the US it's delish! Why not eat dog meat? I don't want to but I wouldn't stop them from doing it.
I can't say this with 100% certainty but wasn't one of the problems the way the dogs were being treated? Obviously not everywhere but weren't some places actually mutilating the animals so they couldn't move? Obviously that's not ok for ANY animal but I wonder if that had something to do with the reason this was passed
Probably. I've read a few times, including here on the site, that some people believe the meat is more tender and tasty when the animals suffer... But I think in that case, better control of the farms to make sure the animals are well treated would be better than just making it illegal - specially since that, by itself, is definitely not going to make people stop doing it.
Load More Replies...I always say this. I don't mind people eating dog meat. I am a vegetarian myself and I am against the eating of meat and it is really bad for the environment. It takes between 5000 and 20.000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of beef! However, if people choose to eat meat, I don't see why eating dog meat is any different than eating cow meat or something. I think that it is wrong to put animals on a pedestal of who is more worthy and less worthy. The only thing I am against is like some parts of China where they torture dogs before eating them because they believe it gives a better taste.
How is dog meat different from beef/chicken/etc? Edit: oh it's not about the dogs, it's about the torturing
Taken long enough! I was so happy when Covergirl became cruelty free. I love wearing makeup and stuff, but so many of the big brands still test on animals.
Unfortunately, if any cosmetic company sells in China, they HAVE to test on animals. Does not matter their stance in the US or other countries. So, yea if you truly want cruelty free makeup find the ones that will not sell in China
Load More Replies...But they will still be testing them on Flat Earthers. (Sorry, that's the only group I'm not afraid to offend)
This is interesting since most of these companies are originated in California :D good news
Testing ban – prohibition to test finished cosmetic products and cosmetic ingredients on animals; Marketing ban – prohibition to market finished cosmetic products and ingredients in the EU which were tested on animals. The same provisions are contained in the Cosmetics Regulation, which replaced the Cosmetics Directive as of 11 July 2013. The testing ban on finished cosmetic products applies since 11 September 2004; the testing ban on ingredients or combination of ingredients applies since 11 March 2009. I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.
I always think that if pandas did (unfortunately) go extinct they’re so loved by the public that it might be a good wake up call for all of us...
Load More Replies...Although Pandas are cute and don't mate because they're generally lazy AND eat bamboo by choice but it provides no nutritional value they are considered a flagship species! This means they act an ambassador for a defined habitat and provide more awareness to the other animals that walk among them (including the ugly ones). I think this is wonderful news! Now we need to work on protecting the rhinos!
Good to hear. I wish China cared about other animals, the rights of minority groups, and the environment as much as they care about pandas.
When an environment is protected, even for one animal, it also protects all the other animals in that ecosystem, including the "ugly" ones, so it is a win-win situation.
And at the same time China is trying to make Tibetans and Xinjiang Uighur extinct.
“I’d eat the last panda if I could have the money we’ve spent on panda conservation back on the table for me to do more sensible things with.”
It's a boob! That one took me a little too long and I'm gonna go be ashamed now.
Load More Replies...And men, who also get breast cancer but at between 1 and 2% the rate women do...
Cool! Now we just need to put in as much effort against prostate cancer. It's equally deadly.
That is wonderful. We never hear good news in the US anymore. I'm happy to hear that there is some.
39%!! That is amazing! Have not heard a word about this! But am still over the top happy!
So many women have already died because of it........ We all know some. Science be praised indeed, as an other person wrote. =:0}
huh in Poland several cities decided to ban fireworks on new year because of animals.
I wish they'd do that here, not just for dogs but the staggering number of war veterans we have in our area.
Load More Replies...Honestly.... I'm a human (I guess) and I get upset too. Not if I'm given visual context, or if I know in advance there will be fireworks, then I don't mind. But to suddenly hear those explosions from afar.... It can trully trigger some kind of.... Not really anxiety, but something similar that brings your brain in a "caution mode", or something like that.
It's only natural. The sounds are similar to sounds of gunfire, car explosions, gas explosions, bomb explosions, mine explosions, electric appliances explosions, smartphone explosions, electric cigaret explosions... and even those who never experienced any of them themselves know (or think they know) the sounds from movies, TV shows, documentaries and/or news. Firework explosions and firecracker explosions are still explosions so if the brain doesn't expect harmless explosions at that moment, it automatically assumes danger and triggers protective instincts or fight or flight instinct. That's my theory anyway.
Load More Replies...It would alleviate my stress and anxiety too. Love the sight and the smell, but the sounds leave me a nervous wreck.
My cat is scared of/hates any loud or unusual noise (vacuum cleaner, fireworks, firecrackers, lawn mower, sweeping/cleaning of the chimney,...)
Have you heard of the Thundershirt? I ordered one for my dog. He has anxiety (he's a rescue and we don't know his background). I hope it will help him. Thought you might want to check it out. download-5...5a3ba.jpeg
It would be great if there could be designated places for fireworks displays and people could go and enjoy the show, instead of having them go off anytime anywhere... a lot of pet owners and parents of small children would be grateful
Yes, but they still have live animals in circus. Saw them in Iasi this summer.
Load More Replies...New Jersey has become the first state in the USA to ban elephants and other exotic animals from traveling performances
That's good news, but I'm surprised. Isn't it legal in NJ to keep pigs in gestation crates? I guess animal cruelty is okay only if you plan to actually kill the animal later.
Load More Replies...Banned in Austria since 2005, a lot of EU countries banned them a few years ago. Reason you still see them is because they can't just be shot and killed ... so there's a transitional phase. Should all go to sanctuaries, I say ...
Yay! Wild animals used in performances is main reason I've long stopped going to circuses(aside from those that never use animals, like the majestic Cirque du Soleil).
I think this is a rule by the European Union and it is applicable in all EU countries.
The U. S. is working for that. Ringling Bros closed down in 2017. But there are still smaller circuses that are still using animals in their acts. There is new legislation in the works that would eventually ban all circuses from using animal performers. The cruelty these animals have suffered over the years is disturbing.
This was such a cruel idea to begin with! All of that just to astound people in order to make money! The "education" argument does not hold water. Even less so with the advent of the internet.
What I mean when I mention the internet is since you can watch so much documentaries featuring animal behavior in their natural environment, so many pictures, etc., why go somewhere to see them perform "tricks"? They already offer such wonders to watch while living in nature!
Load More Replies...IF their husband or father lets them. Far cry from equality, but it's a step in the right direction.
This made me depressed more than happy. I get it is a step in the right direction but the journey is taking way too long. Even in the West, the last Magdalene laundry closed in the 90's. When will equality truly arrive?
Europe shouls start baning comerce with coubtries that dont respect the human rights unless they dont start improving... I think that this economic preasude could really help to make their countries safer for their citizens.
It's hard to decide whether it's better to do commerce and tourism with a country so they're exposed to a variety of behaviours and values or whether to impose trade barriers as you suggested. Vladimir Putin, for example, does his best in Russia to blind Russians from alternative behaviours/ values which is possibly the worst scenario in terms of there being any potential for social evolution. After saying that i'm now expecting something deadly to come through my door!
Load More Replies...This one would've been more reassuring if their new "progressive" leader hadn't rounded up Saudi women's rights activists and jailed them right as this went through... don't trust that one.
So much needs to be done for the plight of females in some countries, hard to know whats more important
yeah, well - their drivers licenses still have to list the status of their virginity...
Eww. Men are sometimes overly obsessed with women's sex lives.
Load More Replies...If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.
Reducing is even more important than recycling. Only a small percentage of what is actively recycled is used.
Load More Replies...There was a report just a couple days ago. The first try at this did not go well but there are going to try again.
golly in India they have been using plastic to pave their roads. now we could do that...
Where is the plastic going? Is that not a question people should be asking, because it is not going to magically disappear into thin air, the law of conservation of mass states this so where is this plastic going?
the key word is "hopes" - it's not that I don't support their efforts wholeheartedly but it's not good news just yet
There's a lot of the scientific community that do not believe Ocean Cleanup Project will be successful. Apparently there hasn't been enough testing on the methods they plan to use, and the device misses a lot of plastic, especially the micro-plastic.
Yeah, heard that even before it started, all over the place. People keep complaining how they'll miss things, and how it's not efficient - but damn them all, NOBODY did anything before, so why the f**** are they complaining now? Nobody else started that idea, everyone's all about "ooooooh, we need to prevent plastic! Let's make (voluntary!) agreements with the companies to use less plastic". They effing didn't even bent a small finger, but everyone's all whining about them not getting every last plasticbottle. Wth? Of COURSE not! But if you take out even 50% of what's swimming in the oceans, it's still 100% more than anyone else did before. 50% less is already good. Even 30% less would be good. Every damn bottle counts, because see... big plastic gets to be small plastic in a few years, so guess what? You take that big one out now, you have less small ones in the future. Argh... this (complaining) is one of the things that gets me really mad (can you tell? ;-) )
Load More Replies...The problem with plastic, it should have been worked on, many years ago !!!
More farmers are keeping bees to benefit crop production, or are allowing beekeepers to keep hives on their property.
Tax write off in some places. Either way, good to go.
Load More Replies...Honeybees are bad for literally any other native bees livelihood as they are an invasive species. I like honey, but for all these studies, it's not for love of all bees, its about the love of profit from one specific breed's labour, which allows it to thrive and kill off native bees which is what is really ruining our environment
That's great! I hope the wasps are fine too, nobody ever talks about them.
The problem is that honeybees are domesticated animals that often leaves little nurishment for the hundred of wild bees that are in decline
Serious question, does that sugar tax include high fructose corn syrup? If not, it should. Sodas were unhealthy before, but when soft drink companies switched to HFCS they became even worse.
It does. HFCS is worse than sugar in many respects. Also, sweetened sodas have WAY too much sugar in them, they don't even taste good. Coca Cola is so sweet it feels more like an adhesive than a beverage.
Load More Replies...I stopped drinking all soft drinks about 4 months ago. One of the best decisions ever! I like carbonation, so I now drink carbonated water. Totally sugar and guilt free!
I love seltzers. I've quit drinking sugared sodas, and have never regretted it. But club soda has sodium, so I avoid that.
Load More Replies...WA state enacted a law that basically prevents sugar tax. So much for free market. Heavily supported by the soda industry.
It has always amazed me how many people refuse to drink plain water! Even as a kid I never liked soda.
Ι stopped drinking carbonated soft drinks some ten years ago, except for the occasional cola. Now I cannot for my life understand how I was able to drink that stuff before. Most of them taste like a chemical waste or byproduct - and that is what most parents serve their children as a ""treat".
Right!? I'm only about 4 months soft drink free. I took a sip of cola a few weeks ago, and it was like drinking pure sugar! I used to drink a lot of soda, but now I can't fathom how I could stomach the stuff!
Load More Replies...Hate to be negative but the decrease in sales for soda is likely linked to people increasing their use of plastic water bottles. More people are reaching for water rather than soda, which is awesome! But, the consumption of plastic bottles has increased over the past decade, resulting in extreme amounts of plastic pollution.
I don't know if this a good piece of news or not - what are they drinking instead?
And coffee sales have most likely increased to replace sodas
people work as soldiers too- but I don't want war- they can make other, less sugary beverages
Load More Replies...The main function of today prisons is to transform problematic people into professional criminals, the whole concept need to be reworked IMHO
Exactly. People go to prison for petty crimes and come out with connections and even less of a chance of finding a proper job so they just get worse and worse...
Load More Replies...Yeah.. but not really. We have stopped funding the police heavenly. There are too little police officers to be out on the streets. House-break ins and bike-thefts aren't even taken on anymore. The police have a too big of a workload. Local officers been gone due to lack of funding from the government, and 75 procent of the policeoffices disappeared to save a buck.. Our crime rate did not drop because there are less criminals...just less police officers to arrest them. (Crime is actually rising!). And thus less people in jail. So the jails became too empty to put money in, so they closed them and found another use for them. The police often goes on strike to demand more fundings. So this is a bit reading facts wrong.
In the U. S. the only good thing I can say about prisons is that it keeps dangerous people off the streets. They don't rehabilitate anyone. They typically have to earn the right to go to classes or work (good behavior). They are paid a ridiculously low wage, but it enables them to buy toiletries, food treats, etc. from the commissary. And, yes, prisons are money making businesses. We have many prisons in Colorado, mostly in Canon City. Some are public and some are privately owned. Con College is right. They learn to be better criminals, and to be more careful about getting caught. When they are released, they typically can't get good work, and end up reconnecting with the same "friends", and committing the same crimes, using drugs, etc. For every criminal in prison, there are many more who are out there running free and committing crimes, often violent crimes. The American prison system is a mess.
In the US we have many privately owned prisons, and they are paid so much to house each prisoner. They have a quota and if it isn't met, the government pays huge fines (millions) to the prison owners. This encourages judges and the government to sentence people to jail. We also have many prisoners who get a life sentence without parole. You can't rehabilitate someone like that. They aren't returning to any normal life. While some people earn that sentence, many do not. For example, we have a 3rd strike law. If you are arrested 3 times for a felony (federal law), you go to jail for life, even if the crime was having pot on you. But, they let rapists go free in the face of proof. One guy was let go because the judge didn't want to ruin his life because he probably would be successful in the future, but sentenced a teenager to life because she killed her rapist when he was raping her! Our system is f****d up!
B F Skinner argued against prisons back in the 70s as punishment does not work anywhere near as well as positive reinforcement. About time someone got a clue.
Sorry to burst your bubble (really), but the the real story behind this is budget cuts; for the police (a lot of police reports go into the bin); in the justice department and the prison department (less personnel, prisoners stay in their cells more hours in the day). But yes, the prisons are now used to house refugees and to house prisoners from other countries, Norway and Belgium (if I'm correct).
Ugh, doesn't it disgust people to know that their comfort comes from something ripped off of something else's body?
I'm only okay with fur that's a byproduct of the meat industry in which case we should be using all of the animal and not wasting it.
Load More Replies...This is actually a really complex issue- people (including me) assume that fur farming is bad but it has been proved that faux fur is worse for the environment as it contains micro plastics and that gets into the ocean, there is a moral debate that real fur is better, it is a moral grey are. Just dont have any fur at all.
It isn’t just an environmental issue though, it is also an animal welfare one.
Load More Replies...The majority of "faux" or fake fur, comes from Raccoon Dogs which are farmed in China, most people don't know that these animals even exist.
It is a disturbing problem, but it probably isn’t the majority of faux fur given the laws against mislabeling.
Load More Replies...Fur was needed at one time. It isn't anymore. We have other products that work better for warmth
I wish Indonesian government would ban civet coffee. These carnivores are forced fed with coffee beans so they can sell the s**t for $300 a pound. Please DO NOT BUY CIVET COFFEE! It's animal abuse
Fur looks so much better on the animals. It makes humans look ugly. Fake fur looks so good, why kill for it?
So as long as you eat the animal it's okay to use the skin? Cows and lamb skin etc.? So gimmie a mink steak and mittens please.
How does that work? Are the rats trained? What keeps them from leaving?
They are trained ( like sniffer dogs) and they have handlers they are treated very very well from what I have seen.

we need to make ocean plastic profitable, if companies start using it and poor people can harvest it and sell it , it is a win win. Stop creating plastic, reuse.
Don't worry Ian of all the plastic we put into the recycle bins 4% only get recycled..

What a shame we are removing plastic from the oceans. This will hurt the bottom line of Adidas shareholders.
Keep up cloning research and one day they'll grow you a new kidney, no need for donors.
I've heard that 3 D printers someday may be able to create artificial organs and other body parts. I don't know how far in the future it would be. It would also save lives.
Load More Replies...What courage and stamina to do something like this. It did work thanks to someone very kind and a MATCH.
More people need to be educated about living donation and regular donation, the simple act of checking that box when you get your driver's license can save multiple lives. thousands of people die every day waiting on transplants.
OMG! GREAT idea!!! I think I’m going to do that.....unless of course one of you would like to give me a kidney!!!! Wouldn’t that be cool to read in Pandora??? “Woman gets kidney donated by Pandora reader who read about a kidney being donated by someone submitting a story about someone donating a kidney, in a Pandora story”???

Unfortunately, E-Cigarette smoking is on the rise, especially among teens due to the flavors that comes in them that teens like :(
It's not cz of the flavours! It's cz it is "cool" & "trendy".
Load More Replies...Way less chemicals in vapour than in a cigarette. That's been proven. When a cigarette is burned 7000 chemicals are created. What IS on the rise is fake news reports mainly pushed by tobacco companies who are loosing sales. In fact one of the main ingredients in vape oil is propylene glycol which if you research you will find it's been inhaled in asthma inhalers since the 50s. I could list lots more information but it would make my post too long to read. Vaping was invented in 1927 and the first device created in 1963 but still no reported illness as a direct result of vaping. Nothing in lungs is always best but let's stop this nonsense that it's worse than smoking.
Actually the tobacco companies own the vaping companies. Also vaping is bad for you. Just FYI, nicotine is produced by plants as an insecticide.
Load More Replies...because people are switching to vaping, which has its own set of problems.
While the CDC doesn't have all the data in about e-cigarettes; e-cigarette aerosol generally contains fewer toxic chemicals than the deadly mix of 7,000 chemicals in smoke from regular cigarettes. However, e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless. It can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine, heavy metals like lead, volatile organic compounds, and cancer-causing agents. https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/pdfs/Electronic-Cigarettes-Infographic-508.pdf
Nicotine itself isn't harmful. It's actually in a lot of foods that we eat such as potatoes and eggplant and various others. Nicotine has even been found to help people suffering with dementia and Parkinson's. The reason it has a misleading reputation is when it is burned it becomes highly addictive and thus addicts people to cigarettes. When it is vaped it becomes a lot less addictive physically but there is a habit forming issue from vaping which is more psychological than physical. We already inhale so many toxins and chemicals from walking down the street that the air in a vape shop has been found to be higher quality than the air outside. Again I say nothing in lungs is best. But vaping is much better than smoking.

maybe the statistic become good because of those 66 million trees planted in india. if not, then it's still more loss than growth
Load More Replies...Yeah... thing is, in some very important (for the globe) areas, it's still getting less and less. Also, the quality of the forest isn't 1:1 with the amount of trees. If we have more trees in say Europe, it doesn't really make up for the tremendous losses in the Amazon forest. If we plant more spruce-plantations, it isn't the same as having a natural-grown forest. So yes... overall, a win. If you look closely, sadly not so much :-(
That's fantastic and surprising and shows what we can achieve when we put our minds to it. But I'm wondering, how long will it take to replace whole ecosystems which are destroyed by deforestation? An article in New Scientist (June 2008) says that while it can take only 65 years for some aspects of rainforest to regenerate, others would take up to 4000 years. The losses are huge and (almost?) irreplaceable.
We think of climate change when we hear this usually. This is good overall, but one thing I learned recently is that trees in far northern areas actually increase, rather than decrease, CO2 output.
Or maybe not output, but the net effect is actually negative, not positive. This is an old article, but I've seen ones in the last year or say that say the same. "A 150-year simulation of worldwide deforestation finds that tropical forests are carbon sinks and boreal forests contribute to warming" https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tropical-forests-cool-earth/

I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.
I got mine when I was sixteen or so, but it was already too late to fix the habits I have. I am thankful every day that I moved to Sweden where it was found in less than a year of me living there.

I hope they remembered to note that autism is a spectrum and any one behavior/sign isn't universal across it
Both my nephews are autistic. Parenting is a hard enough job without having autistic kids, so my hat goes off to people with autistic kids.
I do too. The parents are often judged in some way or another. The child is undisciplined, or the mother must have used drugs while pregnant. Yes, people really say these things.
Load More Replies...Additionally, as female autism can mimic transgender feelings in girls, it is essential for families to be able to recognise female presentation autism so that girls with either condition can get the correct care path.
To eludicate, autistic girls may have social anxiety and difficulty fitting in with the ways neuro typical girls relate to each other (cliqueing, ever changing friendship groups, inconsequential chattering about pop music ,clothes etc); autistic girls may have more pronounced STEM brains; they may find fashion, accessorries and make-up uncomfortable or draw unneccessary attention to themselves which is emotionally hard to deal with; they may get on better with boys who are generally a lot more striaght forward and direct in the way they communicate; they may have difficulty with multi tasking - all of the above are stereotypically feminine things that the autistic girl will find hard, and so in the current culture with trans issues high on the agenda and fpa relatively poorly known about, she may begin to think that she is really a boy, rather than a girl with a differently wired brain.

I was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. I guess I'm lucky. I didn't know many women weren't (aren't) diagnosed with autism until adulthood. For a while, i felt like i was basically sentenced to never fit in. I thought it was autism, which was why i never told anyone I had it (except adults who would help me with it. I did tell one friend though). I hated not fitting in, but I didn't think it would be possible to do so (I eventually found a way, only after getting really mad at peers in 8th grade and yelling at them, then getting a fresh start in high school).
@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.
I might add that they may have had undiagnosed mental health problems, or may have refused to seek treatment altogether. And it is very difficult to commit someone unless it can be proven that the person is a threat to themselves or others. The family and close friends may be trying to get them help and can't.

I believe that the literacy rate is going up but in absolute numbers, the number of people who are functionally illiterate may also be going up, since there has been such a huge increase in the human population of our little planet. Load More Replies...I'm more concerned about plastic cups, plates, bottles, and bags than straws.
Ableism. How about we not ban something disabled people need to live and instead push laws that force better environmental protections overall, as virtue signaling like not using straws which are a teeny fraction of plastic waste does more harm than good.
This is one of the dumbest "green" initiatives ever. Plastic straws contribute very little to plastic waste in landfills. If they REALLY wanted to make an impact, banning plastic water bottles should be first on the list. ...///... This is the US. We have some of the safest water on the planet. There is NO EXCUSE to buy water in plastic bottles.
I always advocate for drinking tap water wherever it's safe to do so, with a filter if needed. And reuse the bottles if you must buy one at some point. And if you must buy water... buy bigger gallons and use reusable bottles. It's cheaper too - bottled water is ridiculously expensive in the long run.

Are more eco friendly biodegradable ones available instead? Not having a straw when trying to sip in the car would be awful.
A & W Restaurants in Canada (fast food - burgers, mainly, with mall food courts and drive-through restaurants), has now made almost all of their packaging *compostable*. Compostable is different than bio-degradeable. And we have HUGE municipal composting facilities in my area (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)! The most recent change at A & W is their compostable straws- they are quite thick paper-based straws. The only true "garbage now from their food is the plastic drink lids & gravy lids, and sauce packets I LOVE A & W for being leaders in this -- now we need to convince all the malls to have a separate compostables bin to send to the facility!
too bad their food sucks
Load More Replies...I'm fine with straws not being given standard, but there are disabled people who need disposable plastic straws for medical reasons, and having some around when requested would help accessibility. (As for alternatives, I can't physically lift a cup let alone get a pipe cleaner in a reusable straw, the paper ones disintegrate too fast, and the bioplastic ones seem super brittle and I keep breaking them)
now if we could expand that to the plastic lids and the non recyclable cups.

Load More Replies...It probably won't work. The cost of actually building homes represents only a small portion the housing crisis. The major factors keeping people out of affordable housing are land costs and zoning laws that are specifically intended to keep the poor out of communities. Every few years someone comes up with a new way of constructing houses for the poor and it never changes anything because the problem isn't the houses. The problem is us.
I saw a documentary on this a couple of years ago. It's a genius idea and will help many people.

Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.
I upvoted this and agree with it. But, also, on the flip side, they had at least a couple of decades knowing that stopping the use of coal was imperative to avoid catastrophe of a scale the world has never seen. So, they could have tried going into a different career long ago. In fact, if everyone had refused to work on the mines, we would have switched away from coal much sooner.

I still don't think they realize they voted for a proven liar who cares nothing for them because they don't make more than 10 or 20 million dollars a year.
I 100% guarantee the decision is not morally based. If they could make serious margins, they'd still do it. I'm not saying that's bad nor good, I'm just saying...

Did you know that hidden in the failed healthcare reform bills of 2017 was a little section that would have allowed employers to test and access your health DNA tests? You take a little test to see if you're predisposed to heart attacks, and suddenly your employer doesn't want you to work for them anymore because you would cost them too much to cover with insurance. My point is we need to pass laws that prevent this from happening.

Yes, but this is worded a bit poorly, imo. I mean, are they drinking less, or are other countries actually just worse than them now?
No, this is a very specific program instituted by the government to change the Icelandic attitude toward drinking, especially underage drinking
Load More Replies...It's actually a very interesting public program. They found that drinking occurred because kids didn't have anything else to do. Iceland instituted all kinds of programs to involve students in sports and after-school activities and clubs. They gave kids all kinds of reasons to occupy themselves with positive things, and in a relatively short amount of time, the drinking statistics plummeted.
Iceland just has very strict drinking laws and alcohol is only available from government shops and it is very expensive
Did the rest of the younths in Europe start to drink more? Or did the icelandic teen start to drink less?
Yeah, because the youths that grew up drinking too much are now adults that drink too much.
What are they drinking less of? Alcohol or sodas? That makes a big difference.
Burning Coal to produce the electricity to power electric vehicles, produces more emissions than a gas powered vehicle.
Some burn rubbish and that is fairly toxic as well. You shouldn't have been downvoted - sadly power stations are major polluters. We're moving the problem and then forgetting the source of power.

Sometimes people can still get the flu, but a much milder form that has a shorter duration. Keep getting the shot each year.
Load More Replies...i might just be making things up, (please correct me if i'm wrong) but isn't the problem with the flu that each year the disease is a little different, and that's why you need to get the flu shot annually instead of once in your life
Yes that’s very true. There are multiple different kinds of flu and at least two of them mutate every year, and scientists first must determine what the mutations will be, then predict which variety will be the most prevalent and deserving of a vaccine. This is another reason why people get the flu after getting the shot: it only protects against the strongest of the possible flu viruses available to catch. If scientists *could* make a vaccine that would guard against ALL types of flu, that would be incredible, but that technology is definitely not available now. Every time our bodies develop immunity to one virus, the surface proteins mutate and it is no longer recognizable. Creating a vaccine that could overlook surface proteins and create immunity for all flu sounds extremely far fetched to me but at the same time it would be very cool.

To those wondering why this is good news, consider this: Prohibition has been a dismal failure, not preventing people from smoking while allowing the mafia and the bikers to hold a complete monopoly over the substance. The current regulatory regime will instead allow consumers to use a safer product while siphoning the profits away from organized crime and towards public education and prevention programs instead. Moreover, making it legal to own and smoke cannabis will allow public authorities to address is as a public health issue (like obesity or tobacco) instead of a criminal one. People are more prone to stop smoking if told that it's bad for them (which it is, generally) instead of being told that it's immoral (which it is not).

I feel that we need more posts like this. Hopeful things could show us that problems DO have solutions, and they ARE worth working towards :)
thank you Mr. Mauro Gatti <3 finally someone who thinks like me. I really enjoyed reading your article! and the drawings are super cute. Keep going
As I was reading this, all I could think was that perhaps there is hope for this world.
Always seek this type of news out, it is always there, but the media is doing nothing to make sure we see it. Things are never as bad as they seem to be.
Load More Replies...Ok 2019, you can beat 2018. Let´s get ready to do things even better!
This is so wholesome and really made my day! Thank you, it's been a rough finals week but this really helped!
Thank you! There is so much good in this world... I am not sure why we keep watching the news, which show only bad stuff and make it huge. You are awesome!
