I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.

I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!

Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.

Lots of legislation disincentivizes good behaviour and it's really unfortunate.

I have asked UK supermarkets why they throw away food instead of donating it. I was told that it's illegal for them to donate any food which is one day past it's "best before" date, because it could cause illness, so it is all thrown away. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Yoghurt, sure. But something like bread, or pasta, as long as it's not mouldy - surely homeless people getting slightly stale food is better than no food? Yes good quality food is better but then there goes this whole topic.

Actually, yoghurt is still edible after that date. I believe this law mostly addresses wasted fresh food, for instance slightly squished vegetables that supermarkets won't sell but that local charities could still prepare in a way that no one sees the difference.

They used to do this a lot in the US, until stores started getting sued... Now most of the excess fruits, veggies and baked goods get donated to local farms to feed animals, at least in my state.

Where I live (CO,USA) some of the grocery stores, and Mom and Pop bakeries donate food to nonprofits. Walmart will not. They throw away perfectly good food, for fear of liability. When I worked for 7-11, they threw away food instead of giving it away. So their minimum wage employees are tossing food that they would be very happy to be able to take home. We were told to open packages and empty the food in the trash, and spray disinfectant on it. This was to discourage homeless people from pulling it out of the trash. I've seen homeless people pull food out of the trash, when they have no idea if it is safe to eat. None of it makes sense to me.

There is a company that buys and then sells food that can't be sold in supermarkets due to size, shape, or any other abnormalities. The company is called "Imperfect Produce."

The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.

Cutting state funds to environmental protection and research. Authorizing prospects for a giant gold mine in the rainforest and offshore oil extraction in French Guyane. So much real bad news, b******t and greenwashing besides that good news for the bees.

Except in America we seem to only be worried about the honey bee which we have domesticated and it makes profit for us. Honey bees are an invasive species and since we harbor a particular liking for them, we give them an advantage and they are and will continue to kill off most, if not all native bee populations. That is our actual problem. We have no shortage of bees, we just have a surplus of an invasive species that we somehow favor and it's detrimental to our much in danger native bee population

Menstruation is normal and natural. If women did not bleed, the human race would die off. The blood is a sign that the woman did not conceive that month. These are basic facts. Women should not be made to feel ashamed for needing sanitary products, and should not be denied them. It's extremely degrading to women (and supremely ignorant) for a man to say "just hold it." When I read that, I just laughed out loud.

I agree with this wholeheartedly, but at this time, I feel like we should *also* be advocating for more women to use reusable sanitary products like menstrual cups and cloth pads. Both for monetary and environmental reasons. I know not everybody can use them, for lots of reasons, but I also think a lot of people just don't even realize they could be using them or that they are even a thing.

If you're poor enough that you can't afford sanitary products, then it's a good bet that you also don't have access to laundry facilities. Menstrual cups are a joke. Cloth pads are leaky diapers that are more trouble than they're worth. ...///... If you want to stuff moss down your pants, knock yourself out. If you'd ever been poor, you'd know better.

Also the UK (including Scotland) donates all proceeds from sales tax levied on sanitary products to women's charities. This is because up until October 2018 under European Union law it was impossible to make sanitary products sales tax exempt.

Never understood why rabbits are okay to eat, or keep as pets, horses are intelligent and have personalities but you can still eat them, cows are pretty much disposable, yet you get crucified for eating a dog. Meat eaters who lose their s**t when people eat dogs need to take a logic 101 course.

    Rafaella Bueno

6 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I have to agree. I love my dog more than anything, but meat is meat. You'd get attached to a chicken or a cow the same way as a dog or cat if they were a pet, but you still eat their meat if it comes from a farm, so how is a dog different? Either you eat no meat or accept any meat as eatable. I understand being against the way those dogs are kept and treated in some farms... but being against eating dogs just because they are dogs seems illogical. I think it would be better if we could switch to insects since it's most environmental friendly.

It's interesting how different countries distinguish between food animals and friend animals. I'm unable to see a qualitative difference between a cow and a horse, but people are find eating one and not the other. Same goes for most animals. I've no desire to eat any of them myself.

I can't say this with 100% certainty but wasn't one of the problems the way the dogs were being treated? Obviously not everywhere but weren't some places actually mutilating the animals so they couldn't move? Obviously that's not ok for ANY animal but I wonder if that had something to do with the reason this was passed

    Rafaella Bueno

Probably. I've read a few times, including here on the site, that some people believe the meat is more tender and tasty when the animals suffer... But I think in that case, better control of the farms to make sure the animals are well treated would be better than just making it illegal - specially since that, by itself, is definitely not going to make people stop doing it.

I always say this. I don't mind people eating dog meat. I am a vegetarian myself and I am against the eating of meat and it is really bad for the environment. It takes between 5000 and 20.000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of beef! However, if people choose to eat meat, I don't see why eating dog meat is any different than eating cow meat or something. I think that it is wrong to put animals on a pedestal of who is more worthy and less worthy. The only thing I am against is like some parts of China where they torture dogs before eating them because they believe it gives a better taste.

I think that the main problem here is the terrible conditions that some countries still have for their animals. Eating dog shouldnt be bad per se but they are social animals who require complex caree to be healthy. Anyway, other eaten animals should be protected too..

I dont see the need for these products to be tested on animals to begin with. Surely all the ingredients will have been tested before. If it is just a beauty product surely they can easily find testers by paying them a fee.

Testing ban – prohibition to test finished cosmetic products and cosmetic ingredients on animals; Marketing ban – prohibition to market finished cosmetic products and ingredients in the EU which were tested on animals. The same provisions are contained in the Cosmetics Regulation, which replaced the Cosmetics Directive as of 11 July 2013. The testing ban on finished cosmetic products applies since 11 September 2004; the testing ban on ingredients or combination of ingredients applies since 11 March 2009. I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.

Although Pandas are cute and don't mate because they're generally lazy AND eat bamboo by choice but it provides no nutritional value they are considered a flagship species! This means they act an ambassador for a defined habitat and provide more awareness to the other animals that walk among them (including the ugly ones). I think this is wonderful news! Now we need to work on protecting the rhinos!

They are still at risk. The thing about protecting wild attractive animals is that to do it well , it protects their habitat, which also protects many other " ugly" creatures and plants.

When an environment is protected, even for one animal, it also protects all the other animals in that ecosystem, including the "ugly" ones, so it is a win-win situation.

Honestly.... I'm a human (I guess) and I get upset too. Not if I'm given visual context, or if I know in advance there will be fireworks, then I don't mind. But to suddenly hear those explosions from afar.... It can trully trigger some kind of.... Not really anxiety, but something similar that brings your brain in a "caution mode", or something like that.

    Night Owl
    Community Member
6 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's only natural. The sounds are similar to sounds of gunfire, car explosions, gas explosions, bomb explosions, mine explosions, electric appliances explosions, smartphone explosions, electric cigaret explosions... and even those who never experienced any of them themselves know (or think they know) the sounds from movies, TV shows, documentaries and/or news. Firework explosions and firecracker explosions are still explosions so if the brain doesn't expect harmless explosions at that moment, it automatically assumes danger and triggers protective instincts or fight or flight instinct. That's my theory anyway.

The U. S. is working for that. Ringling Bros closed down in 2017. But there are still smaller circuses that are still using animals in their acts. There is new legislation in the works that would eventually ban all circuses from using animal performers. The cruelty these animals have suffered over the years is disturbing.

It's hard to decide whether it's better to do commerce and tourism with a country so they're exposed to a variety of behaviours and values or whether to impose trade barriers as you suggested. Vladimir Putin, for example, does his best in Russia to blind Russians from alternative behaviours/ values which is possibly the worst scenario in terms of there being any potential for social evolution. After saying that i'm now expecting something deadly to come through my door!

If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.

Yeah, heard that even before it started, all over the place. People keep complaining how they'll miss things, and how it's not efficient - but damn them all, NOBODY did anything before, so why the f**** are they complaining now? Nobody else started that idea, everyone's all about "ooooooh, we need to prevent plastic! Let's make (voluntary!) agreements with the companies to use less plastic". They effing didn't even bent a small finger, but everyone's all whining about them not getting every last plasticbottle. Wth? Of COURSE not! But if you take out even 50% of what's swimming in the oceans, it's still 100% more than anyone else did before. 50% less is already good. Even 30% less would be good. Every damn bottle counts, because see... big plastic gets to be small plastic in a few years, so guess what? You take that big one out now, you have less small ones in the future. Argh... this (complaining) is one of the things that gets me really mad (can you tell? ;-) )

Honeybees are bad for literally any other native bees livelihood as they are an invasive species. I like honey, but for all these studies, it's not for love of all bees, its about the love of profit from one specific breed's labour, which allows it to thrive and kill off native bees which is what is really ruining our environment

Ι stopped drinking carbonated soft drinks some ten years ago, except for the occasional cola. Now I cannot for my life understand how I was able to drink that stuff before. Most of them taste like a chemical waste or byproduct - and that is what most parents serve their children as a ""treat".

Hate to be negative but the decrease in sales for soda is likely linked to people increasing their use of plastic water bottles. More people are reaching for water rather than soda, which is awesome! But, the consumption of plastic bottles has increased over the past decade, resulting in extreme amounts of plastic pollution.

Yeah.. but not really. We have stopped funding the police heavenly. There are too little police officers to be out on the streets. House-break ins and bike-thefts aren't even taken on anymore. The police have a too big of a workload. Local officers been gone due to lack of funding from the government, and 75 procent of the policeoffices disappeared to save a buck.. Our crime rate did not drop because there are less criminals...just less police officers to arrest them. (Crime is actually rising!). And thus less people in jail. So the jails became too empty to put money in, so they closed them and found another use for them. The police often goes on strike to demand more fundings. So this is a bit reading facts wrong.

In the U. S. the only good thing I can say about prisons is that it keeps dangerous people off the streets. They don't rehabilitate anyone. They typically have to earn the right to go to classes or work (good behavior). They are paid a ridiculously low wage, but it enables them to buy toiletries, food treats, etc. from the commissary. And, yes, prisons are money making businesses. We have many prisons in Colorado, mostly in Canon City. Some are public and some are privately owned. Con College is right. They learn to be better criminals, and to be more careful about getting caught. When they are released, they typically can't get good work, and end up reconnecting with the same "friends", and committing the same crimes, using drugs, etc. For every criminal in prison, there are many more who are out there running free and committing crimes, often violent crimes. The American prison system is a mess.

In the US we have many privately owned prisons, and they are paid so much to house each prisoner. They have a quota and if it isn't met, the government pays huge fines (millions) to the prison owners. This encourages judges and the government to sentence people to jail. We also have many prisoners who get a life sentence without parole. You can't rehabilitate someone like that. They aren't returning to any normal life. While some people earn that sentence, many do not. For example, we have a 3rd strike law. If you are arrested 3 times for a felony (federal law), you go to jail for life, even if the crime was having pot on you. But, they let rapists go free in the face of proof. One guy was let go because the judge didn't want to ruin his life because he probably would be successful in the future, but sentenced a teenager to life because she killed her rapist when he was raping her! Our system is f****d up!

Sorry to burst your bubble (really), but the the real story behind this is budget cuts; for the police (a lot of police reports go into the bin); in the justice department and the prison department (less personnel, prisoners stay in their cells more hours in the day). But yes, the prisons are now used to house refugees and to house prisoners from other countries, Norway and Belgium (if I'm correct).

This is actually a really complex issue- people (including me) assume that fur farming is bad but it has been proved that faux fur is worse for the environment as it contains micro plastics and that gets into the ocean, there is a moral debate that real fur is better, it is a moral grey are. Just dont have any fur at all.

Way less chemicals in vapour than in a cigarette. That's been proven. When a cigarette is burned 7000 chemicals are created. What IS on the rise is fake news reports mainly pushed by tobacco companies who are loosing sales. In fact one of the main ingredients in vape oil is propylene glycol which if you research you will find it's been inhaled in asthma inhalers since the 50s. I could list lots more information but it would make my post too long to read. Vaping was invented in 1927 and the first device created in 1963 but still no reported illness as a direct result of vaping. Nothing in lungs is always best but let's stop this nonsense that it's worse than smoking.

While the CDC doesn't have all the data in about e-cigarettes; e-cigarette aerosol generally contains fewer toxic chemicals than the deadly mix of 7,000 chemicals in smoke from regular cigarettes. However, e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless. It can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine, heavy metals like lead, volatile organic compounds, and cancer-causing agents. https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/pdfs/Electronic-Cigarettes-Infographic-508.pdf

Nicotine itself isn't harmful. It's actually in a lot of foods that we eat such as potatoes and eggplant and various others. Nicotine has even been found to help people suffering with dementia and Parkinson's. The reason it has a misleading reputation is when it is burned it becomes highly addictive and thus addicts people to cigarettes. When it is vaped it becomes a lot less addictive physically but there is a habit forming issue from vaping which is more psychological than physical. We already inhale so many toxins and chemicals from walking down the street that the air in a vape shop has been found to be higher quality than the air outside. Again I say nothing in lungs is best. But vaping is much better than smoking.

Yeah... thing is, in some very important (for the globe) areas, it's still getting less and less. Also, the quality of the forest isn't 1:1 with the amount of trees. If we have more trees in say Europe, it doesn't really make up for the tremendous losses in the Amazon forest. If we plant more spruce-plantations, it isn't the same as having a natural-grown forest. So yes... overall, a win. If you look closely, sadly not so much :-(

That's fantastic and surprising and shows what we can achieve when we put our minds to it. But I'm wondering, how long will it take to replace whole ecosystems which are destroyed by deforestation? An article in New Scientist (June 2008) says that while it can take only 65 years for some aspects of rainforest to regenerate, others would take up to 4000 years. The losses are huge and (almost?) irreplaceable.

But ancient trees supporting huge numbers of species have been replaced by fast-growing trees used for timber. Forests shouldn't be burned and replanted every 20 years, they are highly complex ecosystems

We think of climate change when we hear this usually. This is good overall, but one thing I learned recently is that trees in far northern areas actually increase, rather than decrease, CO2 output.

Or maybe not output, but the net effect is actually negative, not positive. This is an old article, but I've seen ones in the last year or say that say the same. "A 150-year simulation of worldwide deforestation finds that tropical forests are carbon sinks and boreal forests contribute to warming" https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tropical-forests-cool-earth/

Except in the Amazon where the rain forest continues to diminish every year due to felling ... ditto in Indonesia and the Philippines AND in equatorial Africa. Planting trees in temperate regions is of no benefit whatsoever to wildlife in rain forests.

I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.

To eludicate, autistic girls may have social anxiety and difficulty fitting in with the ways neuro typical girls relate to each other (cliqueing, ever changing friendship groups, inconsequential chattering about pop music ,clothes etc); autistic girls may have more pronounced STEM brains; they may find fashion, accessorries and make-up uncomfortable or draw unneccessary attention to themselves which is emotionally hard to deal with; they may get on better with boys who are generally a lot more striaght forward and direct in the way they communicate; they may have difficulty with multi tasking - all of the above are stereotypically feminine things that the autistic girl will find hard, and so in the current culture with trans issues high on the agenda and fpa relatively poorly known about, she may begin to think that she is really a boy, rather than a girl with a differently wired brain.

I was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. I guess I'm lucky. I didn't know many women weren't (aren't) diagnosed with autism until adulthood. For a while, i felt like i was basically sentenced to never fit in. I thought it was autism, which was why i never told anyone I had it (except adults who would help me with it. I did tell one friend though). I hated not fitting in, but I didn't think it would be possible to do so (I eventually found a way, only after getting really mad at peers in 8th grade and yelling at them, then getting a fresh start in high school).

@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.

I might add that they may have had undiagnosed mental health problems, or may have refused to seek treatment altogether. And it is very difficult to commit someone unless it can be proven that the person is a threat to themselves or others. The family and close friends may be trying to get them help and can't.

In the U. S. having Medicaid or Medicare can make the difference of getting health care and needed medication, or being left out in the cold, with no medical care. There is no way anyone could pay out of pocket for healthcare. Middle class families pay a fortune for health insurance, and many poor people have little or no healthcare. And this is the richest country in the world.

This is one of the dumbest "green" initiatives ever. Plastic straws contribute very little to plastic waste in landfills. If they REALLY wanted to make an impact, banning plastic water bottles should be first on the list. ...///... This is the US. We have some of the safest water on the planet. I always advocate for drinking tap water wherever it's safe to do so, with a filter if needed. And reuse the bottles if you must buy one at some point. And if you must buy water... buy bigger gallons and use reusable bottles. It's cheaper too - bottled water is ridiculously expensive in the long run.

A & W Restaurants in Canada (fast food - burgers, mainly, with mall food courts and drive-through restaurants), has now made almost all of their packaging *compostable*. Compostable is different than bio-degradeable. And we have HUGE municipal composting facilities in my area (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)! The most recent change at A & W is their compostable straws- they are quite thick paper-based straws. The only true "garbage now from their food is the plastic drink lids & gravy lids, and sauce packets I LOVE A & W for being leaders in this -- now we need to convince all the malls to have a separate compostables bin to send to the facility!

I'm fine with straws not being given standard, but there are disabled people who need disposable plastic straws for medical reasons, and having some around when requested would help accessibility. (As for alternatives, I can't physically lift a cup let alone get a pipe cleaner in a reusable straw, the paper ones disintegrate too fast, and the bioplastic ones seem super brittle and I keep breaking them)

Cute diagram. :) And from my experience with a 3D printer I bought several years ago, that's FAST. Obviously this relatively new technology (I know it's actually kind of old, but it's seen a new focus recently) will have rapid improvements, but I'm still impressed.

It probably won't work. The cost of actually building homes represents only a small portion the housing crisis. The major factors keeping people out of affordable housing are land costs and zoning laws that are specifically intended to keep the poor out of communities. Every few years someone comes up with a new way of constructing houses for the poor and it never changes anything because the problem isn't the houses. The problem is us.

Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.

I upvoted this and agree with it. But, also, on the flip side, they had at least a couple of decades knowing that stopping the use of coal was imperative to avoid catastrophe of a scale the world has never seen. So, they could have tried going into a different career long ago. In fact, if everyone had refused to work on the mines, we would have switched away from coal much sooner.

During her campaign for president, Secretary Clinton proposed re-training for coal mine workers and people affected by plant closings. They chose to believe the person eventually elected president. Coal mines are still closing and we've had thousands of people losing their jobs due to automation and out sourcing jobs to other countries. I still don't think they realize they voted for a proven liar who cares nothing for them because they don't make more than 10 or 20 million dollars a year.

Did you know that hidden in the failed healthcare reform bills of 2017 was a little section that would have allowed employers to test and access your health DNA tests? You take a little test to see if you're predisposed to heart attacks, and suddenly your employer doesn't want you to work for them anymore because you would cost them too much to cover with insurance. My point is we need to pass laws that prevent this from happening.

It's actually a very interesting public program. They found that drinking occurred because kids didn't have anything else to do. Iceland instituted all kinds of programs to involve students in sports and after-school activities and clubs. They gave kids all kinds of reasons to occupy themselves with positive things, and in a relatively short amount of time, the drinking statistics plummeted.

Apparently polution, and the stench, was terrible in cities when horses were the mode of transport. Ridiculous amounts of horse manure and dead horses... Though I think people are expecting too much of electric cars. Electricity power stations are major polluters. I suppose it makes the roadside cleaner.

i might just be making things up, (please correct me if i'm wrong) but isn't the problem with the flu that each year the disease is a little different, and that's why you need to get the flu shot annually instead of once in your life

    Mary Ka-bar
    Community Member
6 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Yes that’s very true. There are multiple different kinds of flu and at least two of them mutate every year, and scientists first must determine what the mutations will be, then predict which variety will be the most prevalent and deserving of a vaccine. This is another reason why people get the flu after getting the shot: it only protects against the strongest of the possible flu viruses available to catch. If scientists *could* make a vaccine that would guard against ALL types of flu, that would be incredible, but that technology is definitely not available now. Every time our bodies develop immunity to one virus, the surface proteins mutate and it is no longer recognizable. Creating a vaccine that could overlook surface proteins and create immunity for all flu sounds extremely far fetched to me but at the same time it would be very cool.

Yes, Keanu donated his earnings from the Matrix to the crew, making all of them millionaires. He's done quite a lot of other remarkable charitable acts as well.

I believe that in 10 years it will be legal in much more countries, espechially after several genearations. We all know it is much less harmful than alcohol or tabacco.

To those wondering why this is good news, consider this: Prohibition has been a dismal failure, not preventing people from smoking while allowing the mafia and the bikers to hold a complete monopoly over the substance. The current regulatory regime will instead allow consumers to use a safer product while siphoning the profits away from organized crime and towards public education and prevention programs instead. Moreover, making it legal to own and smoke cannabis will allow public authorities to address is as a public health issue (like obesity or tobacco) instead of a criminal one. People are more prone to stop smoking if told that it's bad for them (which it is, generally) instead of being told that it's immoral (which it is not).

But wasn’t Lilith Fair just for women? No male acts invited. This festival highlights that without a gender restriction at all, female acts are crushing it!

HEY as Icelandic woman I am the one who talks here. You guys can't imagine HOW HARD women and men have been fighting for Years to make Iceland the most feminist and anti toxic masculinity country in the world. All is equal here. So yes it matters. Just try to live here as a woman for few weeks or months and you'll realize what it means to live fearless, free, respected and happy.

How is it good? How making everything equal is good? I get diversity point but diversity does not mean quality. Don't boast about 50% if it is reached through loss in quality. If not they good for the festival but there is nothing to boast about.

I don't see how this is good or bad news. Females are well represented in music and always have been so who cares if this festival is gender equal?

Except they are really not. Go and look at some random festival and see how many female acts or even acts with one female bandmember are playing there. It's devastating. And if you are saying that they are well represented you should be more horrified by this than I am.

Yeah, and, to no-one's surprise, closely followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden. I was initially shocked to see Sweden so low on the list, but when I saw the actual figures, I realised these countries are statistically so close together, that they'll just keep rotating for the No.1 spot for the foreseeable future. Or, of course, you can take Fox News' word for it that these are in fact hell-holes where Muslim refugees rape anything in sight and where Sharia law will be introduced any day now...

Unless you live somewhere in the woods eating only wild plants, almost every crop you eat, wear or otherwise make use of has been domesticated and selectively bred by humans over hundreds or even thousands of years to conform to our desires. And since you're on the Internet, I'm going to guess that you're not living in a hut somewhere.
