When I was a kid I asked Dad if I could see his high school yearbook. He said, "I didn't have one. It was Depression days and there was no money." I never forgot that. Years later, I was looking at eBay and saw a yearbook from the high school and year my father graduated. I bought it for a small sum. When it arrived, I opened it to see my father's senior photo, and was shocked to see he had signed the yearbook! I sent a letter to the person who sold it to me explaining how pleased my father was to receive it.

At the age of 53, I open up my Ancestry.com account to do a little work on my family tree. We were orphaned and what family we had left were very secretive and distant. Anyway, first screen that came up was a newspaper article about a woman artist 2,000 miles away who had purchased a scrapbook on Ebay. She discovered the previous owner was a young woman who died at 34, leaving behind 3 young girls. Turns out, it was my mother's high school scrapbook. This artist called a local reporter, who did the story so we could be found and the scrapbook returned to us. I tried to find that artist but never had any luck. I wanted to tell her she was successful, and to thank her for her efforts, but it had been over ten years by then. I was 6 when Mom died, so memories were few and definitely not fresh. So, that's my story.

People who want this look in a dog and breeders who breed this into dogs, should be made to wear a mask which would give them the breathing etc difficulties these animals suffer. And just in case this isn't enough to convince them what cruel bastards they are they should be beaten with a metal bar, regularly

French Bulldogs are one of my least favorite breeds, from a vet standpoint. Their entire body makeup is genetic nightmare on top of genetic nightmare on top of genetic nightmare. Because of overbreading the form on the left, Frenchies are prone to: cardiac & respiratory issues, cleft pallet, hydrocephalus, chronic arthritis that starts at an early age, chronic skin and ear infections, luxating patella, spinal issues & dysplasia, they often drown easily because their body shape, heavy heads, & short legs, they often can't have natural births. I could be here for hours listing what I've seen or treated. They are really cute, and I would love to see them back in their original form. That goes for the English version as well, both are a genetic mess.

Not to mention ocular proptosis which, by itself, would freak the hell out of anyone and everyone! Like how insanely deformed does a poor dog have to be for that to happen? Just traumatizing all around. I can't even look it up in case there's pics 😳😳😱😱😱😱😱

It's not just dogs. The "balloon" varieties of tropical fish have their organs compressed into spaces that are too small, which results in reduced lifespans, and some species (looking at you, bettas) are bred with fins so long that they have difficulty swimming.

Breeding dogs (or any other animals) for looks only should be outlawed. Especially when they breed for deformities that make animals suffer. Who find it cute? Dogs can't breathe, overheat, have joint problems... is that cute?

Way too many people find them cute. Same with pugs. People see big eyes and "smiling" face, think "BABY!!!" and their brains get thrown out the window. Everything negative, even if they witness it themselves, are explained away. It is a tragedy that needs to stop. If that requires a ban on owning these animals (except for those that are already alive and existing, obvsl), then that's what it takes. Some countries have immigration-bans for dogs with amputated tails or ears already - it's not too far a step!

A lot of people know the century-old myth that we only use 10% of our brain capacity. It toys with the idea that if we one day unlock our full brain potential, we may possess supernatural traits like infinite memory or even telekinesis.

Indeed, it’s tempting to believe that there must be so much more that people can do, learn, and discover. This might be why even a whole myth was born to keep such hope alive.

This misconception received attention at the beginning of the 1900s, when scientists began exploring the abilities of the brain but lacked the proper tools to capture its workings.

It was a prototype tested in 2016, from a concept developed by Samsung Electronics Argentina. Road safety was kind of a second thought, the primary scope was advertising of the upcoming Large Panel LCD line from Samsung. The prototype is no longer operational and has been retired after the testing/campaign ended. While the idea is cool, actual real world applications have much more severe conditions that I doubt would be suitable for the technology.

No, you could only cash a check if it was under $10000 and the bank would be able to require a weeks notice to do that. If depositing the check, they would just put a hold on it until it cleared. Of course, that's if you are in the US.

In 1907, the founder of American psychology, William James, proposed that “we are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.” His suggestion set the 10% misconception ablaze, resulting in many other myths.

One of them is related to Albert Einstein, who allegedly credited his genius to being able to use more than 10% of his brain. However, no such thing was ever documented, which proves that it was just a made-up story.

In fact, scientists today believe quite the opposite, saying that we use our entire brains daily. “All of our brain is constantly in use and consumes a tremendous amount of energy,” explains Mila Halgren, an associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences. “Despite making up only two percent of our body weight, it devours 20 percent of our calories. Even while we sleep, our entire brain remains intensely active.”

Oh this one is so sad to me, while also being happy. A very beloved Cheetah, Emmett, at the Columbus Zoo who had his own little companion pupper recently passed away (he had lots of health issues, poor guy). He did so much to help with Cheetah conservation and awareness, too. https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-news/columbus-zoo/cheetah-whose-best-friend-was-a-dog-dies-at-columbus-zoo/

So now that we know that we use 100% of our brainpower, can we possess infinite memory or ultimate knowledge like the myth creators have hoped? Or are there still unbreakable boundaries? “This is still in contention,” Halgren says. “There may be certain problems that the human brain is fundamentally unable to solve, like how a mouse will never understand chemistry and a chimpanzee can’t do calculus.”

“There are three possible outcomes in that scenario,” the narrator of the video says. “One is that you’ll regret it instantly. You won’t be able to deal with all the knowledge because you’ll probably learn something you didn’t want to know. You’d be aware of everyone’s thoughts, feelings, what’s happening around the world at any given time, and what’s about to happen. So, it could be damaging to your own sense of self.”

The 'Frozen Zoo' has samples of 12 different Northern White Rhinos. It might be possible to use these sample to re-create the species, and use the Southern Rhinos as surrogates. Twelve individuals is enough to establish a genetically diverse species.

From Wiki: Formerly found in several countries in East and Central Africa south of the Sahara, since 19 March 2018, there are only two known rhinos of this subspecies left, named Najin and Fatu, both of which are female; barring the existence of unknown or misclassified male northern white rhinos elsewhere in Africa, this makes the subspecies functionally extinct. The two female rhinos belong to the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic but live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya where they are protected by armed guards. 😭😭

Again: fake news. There used to be one species of Galapagos turtle. Then they assigned a separate species name to each island so they could bring attention when one island lost its last tortoise, the rationale being that the fact that the tortoises couldn't go from island to island made for "geographic" speciation. They never mentioned that they later found dozens of relatives of Lonely George on another island had been breeding with that island's official Galapagos turtles.

The last outcome they came up with was the loss of humanity. "Infinite knowledge is something no human has ever experienced. You’d see what happens beyond the universe. You’d know about other intelligent life and alien civilizations. You’d even be aware of whether or not we have souls. Then, you wouldn’t be able to experience the emotions that make us human; such as surprise, hope, wonder, and fear. You’d become an emotionless robot.”

I think that's a subjective and highly cultural judgement that's far from universal. I'd say rather that there's a lot of bad architecture under the Brutalist umbrella but not really more than with, say, bare brick construction. I find many brick-built housing estates in the UK profoundly depressing. Where I live in Czechia there are villages of grey-painted plaster that also seem drab and grimy to me but that Czechs consider beautifully quaint because their framework of expectations are different from mine, which grow from the ideal British village of whitewashed cottages with slate or thatch roofs. I've lived in Communist-built concrete tower-block estates, too, and while I'm far from a fan found them a world away from superficially similar estates I've lived in in Britain - livable and walkable communities that feel safe and human. I'm not a fan of Brutalism on the whole (with notable exceptions) but I don't see a deal more soul in things like mock Tudor or neoclassical revivalism.

Another example from Budapest. This department store called Corvin was originally built in 1926. It was covered in 1964 after it was damaged both in WW2 and in the revolution of 1956. Renewals finished in 2023. 394672583_...c91cc8.jpg 394672583_971003777728325_3774053924733781055_n-6696ff0c91cc8.jpg

So, from what I read: It's an office building of the Hungarian parliament. It was originally designed in the 1920s and the neighbouring buildings were completed, but this one was not and was built later in a more contemporary Brutalist style instead. It fell into disrepair and after a lot of new designs failed to find approval, it was decided to rebuild with a facade to match the original neoclassical revivalist design. So it's a bit meta, really: a 21st century copy of an early 20th century copy of 18th century neo-classical architecture... I know some people love this retvrn stuff but I think it's very unimaginative. In keeping with the existing environment, which is fine, but nothing to get excited about. (Now watch as I get downvoted for my opinions on that...)

I don’t know about you, but to me, every outcome sounds like the end of an apocalyptic movie. Having entertained this idea of ultimate knowledge, I now understand the importance of not knowing everything. I don’t know, all the knowledge in the world, including predicting the future seems like a LOT of work. I’d rather read the occasional book and watch cat videos on YouTube,” agrees the narrator of the Bright Side video.

I had the good fortune to snorkel this a couple years ago. It’s the clearest water I’ve ever seen. And you do not have to know how to scuba to do it. The water is about 36°F so you have to put on a dry suit, a process that takes about 90 minutes to do. It’s an incredible experience if you ever get the chance. Incidentally this diver is only about 10 or 15 feet deep. I make less than $100k per year so it’s surprisingly affordable!

Although it took much longer than it should have, a wildlife overpass is currently being built north of Los Angeles across the 101 freeway. When finished it will be the largest in the world. It will finally allow the mountain lion population in the Santa Monica mountains to venture out in search of mates without having to cross a freeway. Not to mention all the other wildlife that will utilize it. The funding for this endeavor came from many groups and years of work on their parts.

Because animals follow traditional routes that are passed down from parents, locations for the overpasses can be highly targeted. Meaning it is actually possible to deploy them across north America for a reasonable price and they pay for themselves within a few years.

Noooooo!! Dwarfism in Shepherds is caused by a recessive gene. The dogs are very unhealthy and don't live as long as normal Shepherds without dwarfism. They also tend to have temperament issues and can be fear biters. It is NOT something anyone breeds for. Source: I have been in the GSD breed for over 30 years, studied canine genetics since 1999, and bred GSDs for service dog work for 15+ years.

Pro tip I learned from my dental assistant: When getting an impression, keep one foot elevated. This makes your brain focus on keeping the foot elevated and not on the fact that there is horribly gunky stuff filling your mouth!

It was stuck so firmly in my mouth that I genuinely thought I would lose my teeth with the amount of force with which the intern was trying to remove it. Turns out that she didn’t even do it properly as air bubbles formed so I had to go through that torture again. Both the times I got all that stuff on my face and in my hair so I spent the rest of my evening rubbing my face and scraping at my hair

Close second for me is the pain of and trying not to gag during dental X-rays taken of my very back teeth. I have a small jaw and it's really difficult for everyone involved.

It's Professor Zbigniew Religa, most renowned Polish transplantologist. He passed away in 2009 of lung cancer. Professor Marian Zembala, who took part in this famous surgery, also saved my father's life. Professor Zembala died in 2022. Those doctors were real heroes.

Not an experiment, and not complex genetics. In fact there are many cases where genetics does not work like this (because of recessive genes and so on).

It's based of their sense of smell. Wolves pee on their territories (like dogs or every territorial mammals) and the smell of it says "mine" to other packs, so they have to pee often in those places

Yes, sunflowers are fake flowers, like how strawberries aren't berries. Wiki explains in more detail: what appear to be "petals" of an individual flower, are actually each individual complete ray flowers, and at the center is a dense pack of individual tiny disc flowers. Because the collection has the overall appearance of a single flower, the collection of flowers in the head of this sunflower is called a pseudanthium or a composite.

They are called 'crinkle crankle walls' or 'serpentine walls'. In Suffolk (about a third of the way up England, on the right hand side) there are around 100 such walls, and about 50 in the rest of the country.

In North America, a similar fence was often constructed of split rails of wood in a criss-cross. No nails or other fastening required. The fences are easily dismantled to allow passing through, such as diverting cattle to a fresher pastures. https://www.oldewoodltd.com/blog/americas-first-fences

Fun fact! The tunnel is there because the supports of the Öresund bridge would've been too high for the Köpenhamn airport. They built Peberholm, the island on that photo, just for the tunnel.

Every time I see this bridge I am drawn back to seeing a body in the middle of the bridge, right on the border between Denmark and Sweden. Was part of the plot to a very good detective series. You get a very good view of it as you come in to land at Copenhagen airport - and the flight path is the reason for the tunnel part.

In some hot climates, women are required to wear a black abaya and hijab, whereas males can wear loose fitting white garments. Looking at this, the women must be very uncomfortable 😢

The black garment goes over the regular clothes which creates a surprising freshness in hot dry climates. Specially if you wear white UNDER black, because black traps heat and then white shields it from heathen the body. Talking from experience...plus black clothes prevent sunburned skin better and are way kinder for eyesight too under bright sun

cut the image and keep only the 1st line of squares and imagine the control panel of an old oven, with these big round buttons. When they are all stopped, the pattern represents straight lines, if you turn the buttons a quarter turn, you get this pattern (how to complicate things :D)

The shape lets them filter feed! They gulp water, close their mouths, and spit out the water through the teeth filters. They can retain a LOT of krill to feed their chonky selves without expending much energy.

It's not necessarily the scars - with the exception of individuals like this one with very large, distinctive scars, it's more the white patches they use for ID. They're different on every whale, so there are whole databases of whale tail photos for different species showing the markings.

Auntriarch, it totally depends on what you buy. Most weeks my frozen food consists of a bag of chicken fillets, and a frozen pizza. In a month, I might also buy ice cream, peas, fish and quorn. I am very fortunate to live in a country where it is cheaper to buy fresh produce, in season than to by frozen food.

I made a grocery list on Microsoft Office, based it on items we get frequently and in the order we go through the store, I have many blanks for write-ins. I make out my menu for the week then put the stuff needed on the list. I don't save the weekly list and I don't close it till it prints out, learned that the hard way when my printer jammed and I had to do the list over.

I saw many similar drawings, as well as 'salad words' by people with schizophrenia and artworks by people with other mental illnesses at the Cunningham Dax museum (I believe it has changed it's name now) in Melbourne when I was studying psychology. It was also so haunting but I loved it because you could see how people saw themselves or others because of their illnesses.

Based on ships' navigation lights, but there's more to it than this - if you sea red or green alone, or particularly if you observe a sequence of red, red+green, green (or vice versa) you can tell what direction they're going in.

The infographic is plain wrong. "Facing away" is missing the mandatory rear-facing white taillight. All of them are missing the anticollision red flashing beacons at the center of the plane, top and bottom of the fuselage, that are mandatory to signal when an aircraft is in operation.

I used to be able to pick a good watermelon but I seem to have lost that ability, I always get them too ripe or not close to ripe anymore. I don't know if it's an issue with my finger/thumping them or if it's my hearing, ie not hearing the thumps correctly.

It seems to create this 'liquid tree' you have to make a lot of pollution. Go retro, plant trees, they give shade and habitat to wildlife.

Pollution? It's water and algae. They convert UV and CO2 to lipid-rich biomass, that in turn can be used as biofuels. Algae are amazing at storing CO2, about three times more efficient than trees by volume. They thrive in almost any environment, and can live off a tank of water, often without bothering about pollutants.

Not always. My daughter was born with her eyes focused. She could see as well as a 1 year old at birth. All the nurses and doctors in the hospital came to the maternity ward, to look at her. It is very rare, and they found it rather disturbing. No knowing any difference, I just thought that all babies can see. Until one nurse explained it to me.

Maybe there is no reference in the brain, because eyes are just sending the light signals. They also say that the babies initially see only the auras around a person

tip: do NOT attach to bare metal, always attach both the battery. Some cars -though not many- have the positive connected to the frame. I found this out when installing extra high-beams on my suzuki s-cross.

Positive-earthed vehicles are incredibly rare these days, since the 1960s, so not something you realistically need to worry about any more - if you have one you will know. Quite a few modern cars have batteries fitted in places where you can't easily access them, in which case there will usually be a dedicated positive pole connection under the bonnet (hood) and either an obvious piece of thick flat metal attached to the engine or sometimes a dedicated negative pole as well.

Do I need to be able to retrieve it myself afterwards (so I can’t just hide this specific paperclip amongst other paperclips) ? Do I need to reasonably know there is a chance he can find it (so no throwing it into the sea or eating it)? Is he allowed to break the law in order to find it? Yes, I’m taking this seriously, this is my idea of fun.

That’s something I saw in my dream once. It was a reflection of me and at the same time my chin had a massive hole underneath from which it was bleeding

This is not real, it's from a commercial parody done on Saturday Night Live called the Love Toilet.
