It is interesting to look, how people that lived more than hundred years ago imagined the times we now live in. I have compiled a collection of postcards created by artists in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century on the subject of the Millennium.
Many things depicted on them seem to be funny, but some ideas became a reality.

Braslav, you did not compile a collection of postcards, you stole images from someone else's published work. All of these images are cigarette cards drawn by by Jean Marc Cote in 1899, and these images were taken from Isaac Asimov's book "Futuredays." The art copyright belongs to Marica Sparks Graphics.
The art must be really old, because Renard and von Helmholtz proved that attaching wings to a person won't support flight back in 1889.
Art doesn't necessarily have to be confined by any science :)
Load More Replies...Yes! It would be awesome to read (any) book like that. That's really handy for instruction manuals or legal texts... All that dry stuff that takes you forever to read.
Load More Replies...Yes, I was thinking of Kiki's Delivery Service, too.
Load More Replies...Still waiting for that flying car in everyone's driveway- or roof!
I live in a 30.000+ people city in France and i got a bike postwoman. Love it! they have cars and electric vehicules too but i really prefer bikers postwoman-postman.
This one exists. I will be using something like this to watch the solar eclipse this month.
Not far off? It's already here. There exists GPS operated farm equipment right now. Automated harvesters and watering machines are already in use in many places. Welcome to the future! ^_^
Load More Replies...There really are tractors out there that are programmed to travel in straight line grids. No need for a driver! It's all computerized.
It's just a really big lawnmower right? We have those already robotically controlled.
This is after the Third World Nuclear War, when radiataion mutates all life.
Mutations happen. The question is, can they support life?
Load More Replies...This is just... WAY out there. Seahorses are both incredibly small and very weak swimmers. They should at least be riding dolphins or something.
They were already dreaming of thoses flying cars 5th Element style... and we are still waiting for them :'(
Not gonna happen in the nearest future. Not because of the lack of technology, but because people are irresponsible sloppy shits. We cannot drive safely on the road, let alone fly a vehicle in the sky. Accidents on the road is bad enough, now imagine accidents in the sky.
Load More Replies...Still trying to figure out autonomous road vehicles. A little ways from this future yet.
Roomba runs over dog poo :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeSyAOMx0ho
Load More Replies...I'm still waiting on them to invent a "Rosie" i need something to do my cooking as well.
Actually the first bombers were zeppelins and they carried machine guns on the top, belly and back. Idk if dogfigts happened like that, but it's very possible. That was WWI of course and then the Hindenburg catastrophe happened and zeppelins were replaced by airplanes.
Load More Replies...Possibly because they know what the human race is like naturally
Load More Replies...Why would you hang BOATS off of dirigibles? Also, I do think it's pretty funny that a bunch of 19th-century sci-fi writers and artists were like "You know what's the way of the future? Balloons."
there are also apps that are design to "try on" different make colors before applying
Load More Replies...You can see there's a guy in the front dressed in motorist clothes, including goggles, implying that it would work like a car rather than a carriage.
Load More Replies...That just looks like a chemical laboratory rather than a kitchen. Was this supposed to make those future "don't-need-to-eat-real-food pills"?
No form of quidditch has the capacity to be "lame"
Load More Replies...Yeah. At least in Quiditch the balls stay up with magic.
Load More Replies...This is kind of sad. This is basically saying that human beings are not capable of playing instruments well and following along with music properly.
No, it's just easier, and humans are, but this wouldn't take any practice
Load More Replies...In fact, at the end of the century there were complaints about classical music sounding too 'industrial'.

We have jumbo jets that are like a restaurant inside complete with a bar!
And it's impossible for a plane to stand still on a spot.
Load More Replies...Yeah, if a boat is sinking in that weather, a f*****g wood-and-canvas plane is going down FAST.
This is really the most accurate one so far. We do have planes and copters that regularly patrol the waters and do search and rescue, etc.
Would you trust all that coming towards you?! I think not..
Load More Replies...Sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker In patent office: "I have invented an automate barber machine" "How it works" "You put your face in this hole and the razors shave it themself" "But everyone has another face shape!!!" "Only until first shaving"
You think a judge may have had his eye on the machine's wife too?
Load More Replies...brought to you by Panasonic http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2045544/Panasonic-unveils-robotic-hairdresser-CEATEC-Tokyo.html
well we do have trimmers now but I hope no one actually tried to invent THAT thing.....
Of course they did. It's one of the obvious things a person can't do on their own, while birds fly in and out of their yard.
Load More Replies...I understand the down vote but remember who creat this picture: a French male from 19th/ early 20th. We're seeing this from our actual point of view and we are all glad this vision of the futur did not realise! But in case some people forgot, Europeans at that time had colonies and that was how they saw the Natives. Colonies were just good for their raw material, cheap workforce (very very close to slavery), showing domination of white peoples... white people giving themselves good conscience by Christianizing and "educating" those "poor/good savages". I'm a little sad this picture got buried, because it's hidding what actually happened, what we are responsible for....
Thank you for this comment! I agree that we can't forget our history happened, because then we will repeat it.
Load More Replies...They didn't know any better at the time. Let's look at it as how far we've come and an example to learn from. If we do not remember the past we are doomed to repeat it.
Them good ol'fashioned coal black jungle people with crazy red lips.
Reminds me of that picture taken from an airplane flying over an African village that had never seen anything from outside of their world.
Well, actually... drivers in Houston began shooting at one another loooooonnnnnggg before l'an 2000!
I'd say that the problem is the fish. They're not that smart.
Load More Replies...And it was in the old times where they had feminine clothing standards that went so practical
Load More Replies...We should definitely revisit this one given what the cost is for buying a home on land in a city is these days. Most cities are located near a sea so this would solve a lot of problems
Lets see.... the PBY-5 Catalina, the P3 Orion? However, this is not a torpedo plane, this is a bomber, like the B-17, B-52, or the AC 130 Hercules.
Add a few more guns and gunners and yes, it is like an old timey AC-130!
Load More Replies...Tony, you have to remember that "torpedo" has been used to connote mines too (damn the torpedoes....). As I am sure you know, you have to research the period to understand it.
No. This thing wipl drill itself in the ground. You need counteracting helices to support flight.
Load More Replies...More like air-taxi. "Pilot, let me out at the Louvre Musem [please]". (I'm adding the word 'please' because it's polite to treat your taxi driver like a real live person who deserves respect.)
Bad s**t happens when people walk and shoot, hell they don't need flight as well. Personal flight is just something that never needs to happen, ever. People can't keep cars on the road in a straight line, we don't need jackasses flying over our homes!
Load More Replies...Some people at the time? Yes. The guy who made these drawings? HELL NO.
Load More Replies...Excuse me miss, do you have a minute to talk about our lord and savior Cthulhu?
Good lord, women have to wear dresses even under water? I am so glad I was born at this time and this place.
It's interesting to see that while envisioning a future in which ordinary tasks were mechanized and air travel and underwater life became commonplace, the class system was preserved. Also persisting unchanged: sex roles, racial prejudice, war and violence, and the confinement of women's sexuality,
Dear Margaret, please rise above feminism and see this picture from the scenarios present at point of time. The advancements were more towards technology not towards women rights or women naked women on the streets. You see its the same game which is played on land, so the interpretation taken out is that under water sports would be there in future. Point is, one does not know how future will be. So while predicting future one will keep a few things at constant and seek changes in a particular direction. from these images it is clear that the author was imagining about technical advancements only and tried to portrait the scenarios which where there in front of him or happening around the globe. That's all.
Load More Replies...Didn't he understand that water is not the best place for all sports? Croquet would just be slow and laborious underwater!
Load More Replies...Didn't anyone realize that the pressure underwater gets intense enough to destroy the human body at enough depth? O.o And how completely impractical a dress would be in water to begin with??
sure, this'll work because whales never go up for air or dive deep or anything like that.
Unless that boy's got a magic wand, those kids are DEAD. Also, holy hell is that a huge bird. Apparently this artist was under the impression that evolution was a very quick process, and it has the goal of making everything bigger than it is now.
They obviously believed that we would just add wings to EVERYTHING!! LOL
Yes this was the time! You can tell it was the time of discoveries, trying to "dominate" wild nature, animals and sadly other humans... You can tell this is french too because of all the wine featured in these pics lol (no bashing, i'm french).the pilot who stop to have his glass on a balcony is so fun! Thank you for the post Braslav
Load More Replies...They'd be disappointed to know that women did not cover their knees is 2000.
Only the ones who didn't want it (totally sarcastic by the way)
Load More Replies...Everyone here must remember, these are all a part of the same set, so (having not done much research) I presume they were all made by the same artist or artists. There were people who studied physics and mechanics and understood that none of these really make sense.
Interesting to see that people were all about discovering more about the deep seas, but no one imagined going into space. Funny that they didn't think to fly so much higher with those wings.
This reminds me of back to the future part II where they thought we would have flying cars and hover boards in 2015!
