50 Times People Hilariously Failed At Creating Pinterest Crafts At Home
Interview With ExpertPinterest is a magical place. It’s full of aesthetically pleasing homes, perfectly organized office spaces, seasonal crafts that will leave your house looking adorable year round and simple projects that can spruce up your garden. But how often do you actually attempt any of the DIY projects you admire online?
Apparently, many of them are much more difficult than the site would lead you to believe. Below, you’ll find some of the most hilarious Pinterest versus reality fails that people have shared of their own projects. Whether you’re a craft expert or not, we hope you enjoy scrolling through these unfortunate attempts, and keep reading to find a conversation with Brandy Nelson of the Gluesticks blog!

Pinterest Fail
The original was made with watercolors (water and pigment) that have been forcefully blown from the center out. The other one was made by melting crayons, which even at high temperature will never be liquid enough to be blown.
That's not true. I've seen videos of people making them
Load More Replies...No — then the streaks would be tangent to the circle/edge, not pointing away from centre; compare sparks flying off an angle grinder. Original is blower plus water colours (I guess, from the mixing!!) on a flat plane; copy is crayons with heat on a slope.
Load More Replies...I actually did this. It’s turned out great! I used a hair dryer so it went slow!
Auntie Misjudged The Length Of My Neck
no actually this is on purpose, purposefully covering the pup's ears to keep them warm
As much as I enjoy the act of sitting down and working on a fun little craft, I know my limits. I can make adorable Valentine’s day cards or bake cute treats for Halloween. I can paint an egg for Easter, and I’m capable of operating a hot glue gun. But when it comes to carving pumpkins, working with wood, elaborately decorating a cake or working with clay, I’ll be sitting those crafts out.
Thanks to the internet, however, we have endless DIY ideas at our fingertips nowadays. According to Sprout Social, Pinterest was the 15th most popular social media site in 2023 with 450 million monthly active users. 80% of pinners say that the site makes them feel positive, referring to it as a “social media oasis” compared to other similar sites. And most users aren’t simply scrolling, as 85% of them say they’ve used the platform to help them start a new project.
Ocean In A Bottle: Witness My Epic Pinterest Fail
Oh goodness, it looks like a severed toe with silver polish at the bottom of a lake.
Tbf it looks more accurate to the ocean than the one in the bottle
It is. The sand is bound with clear epoxy so it stays put. The starfish is dead and glued in place. Also, to keep it clear for longer you have to add ammonia and flocculants to the water. Of course that spoils the magic of the "5 minutes craft" and is never shown in the videos. This is the typical project that looks good in photo only.
Load More Replies...Just need to keep washing the sand and rinsing it till it's clean
An Attempt At A Guy Fawkes Origami Mask Turned Into A Pinterest Fail
Origami with the wrong sort of paper doesn't usually work out too well. This is very much not the right sort of paper here.
And it would help if they folded it correctly (I realize the wrong paper would affect the folds though, to some extent).
Load More Replies...I remember in 4th grade we were learning to make origami and I loved it! My best and only friend that year had to have surgery for something wrong with his stomach and he didn't make it......😖😞😟😭😭😭😭 The whole class made a c**p ton of origami to give to his parents. Im 36 now and his death still makes me so incredibly sad 😢 RIP Ryan. I really truly miss you so so much!!!!!!! ❤️❤️💗💗💖💖💕💕
I'm so sorry. We had something similiar happen. A classmate in 4th grade who had to move back to Tokyo and she taught the whole class (It was a small class of 9 bc of covid) and as a farewell gift, we made her origami that filled 2 boxes (she wasn't able to take them all with her)
Load More Replies...Look, Guy Fawkes has been dead for how many centuries? The mask is definitely better than the model at this point.
A Friend Used Pinterest Instructions To Make An Oscar The Grouch Costume For Her Guinea Pig
As far as why Pinterest is so beloved by users, particularly Gen Z, Socially Powerful says that the site has an extremely well developed search engine. It might even be better than Google! It’s also a great platform for anyone who wants to keep up with current fashion trends, as one study found that Pinterest trends take off 20% faster than those that originate on other platforms during their first six months.
But, of course, many people choose to use Pinterest to find inspiration for projects around the house and crafts to do with their little ones. Unfortunately, however, these DIY projects don’t always go according to plan. Whether it’s a failed cake that deserves to be on Nailed It! or a carved pumpkin that looks much scarier than intended, plenty of people know the experience of creating something that doesn’t live up to the expectations that Pinterest has set.
Low-Budget Pinterest
I fail to see how this is a fail. It looks identical to the original (except flowers next to instead of on top of the pumpkin). The only criticism I can possibly come up with is to use better quality (more expensive) white paint.
i love it!...and, unlike the plastic pinterest, yours is real and, depending on the paint, can be chucked in the woods to wildlife...
It's because the Pinterest one is a fake pumpkin. They always are. Paint does not stick well to real pumpkins
This is very nice, but I think it was supposed to contain the flower pot
Here’s A Fail Of A DIY Craft. Good Effort Though
Too little string and most likely not waiting long enough for the glue to fully dry
Load More Replies...i've tried making these like ten time with different techniques...all fail
Nailed It, 0-2
The original look sugly. The copy would have been really cool with the swirls, if they hadn't broken.
i have no idea what happened here...but, when doing this craft, buy the cheap mints -- for some reason they work better...and, don't try to mix them, but seems like what may have been done here
To gain some more insight on this topic from a crafting expert, we reached out to Brandy Nelson, creator of the Gluesticks blog, who was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda. First, we wanted to know if most of the crafts we see on Pinterest are actually possible for the average person to complete.
“I think the majority of craft and DIY projects can be done by anyone! We live in a day and age where you can figure out how to fix your clothes dryer by watching a YouTube video,” Brandy shared. “Sometimes things can get lost in translation, so it’s important to find a thorough tutorial. I tend to look for links on Pinterest that not only provide a tutorial, but also step by step photos AND a video because I’m a visual learner.”
Nailed It
How my crafting attempts usually turn out. Smoke, glue in my hair, and a big grin. I love this one!!
Getting more of the, "I came down the chimney" vibe from yours!!
Pinterest "It" Pumpkin vs. My Sister's
The one on the right looks quite seductive actually. Not scary at all. Yeah, I would.
I Tried To Build A Book Igloo With My Students After I Saw It On Pinterest
It can be done, but it’s not easy and there’s a lot of glue and hidden support
Load More Replies...This pic has been around for some time. Most look like notebooks of a specific size and weight, so sure, it's interesting as an art piece, but I think it's pointless using books if you ever want to read one of them, because everything will crumble down.
Textbooks from a disused library actually. They weren't uniform so it took much planning to get the books balancing properly.
Load More Replies...the pinterest version has hardcover books, yours are all paperback? and both versions harm the books.. why would u do that?
I can't find any reason that the art installation in the first picture harmed any books. They were not secured beyond their own natural construction.
Load More Replies...So many people here don't know about igloos, self supporting arches and domes smh
The Pinterest version is used with hardbacks, and likely glued in place. But I like the OP’s igloo better; it’s made with love and kinda makes me want to built a blanket fort under the table like I did 40years ago when I was a young’n!
When it comes to common mistakes people tend to make when embarking on a DIY project, Brandy says that reading through the entire article or post is crucial before beginning any project. “I’ve made that mistake many times,” she admits. “Starting recipes before making sure that I have all of the ingredients, or not buying the right supplies for a DIY project because I only glanced at the supply list. I do not recommend substituting items or skipping steps unless you are an expert!"
My Fiancée Recently Took Up Crocheting And Wanted To Follow A Guide From Pinterest. This Is The Picture She Sent Me After Her First Attempt At A Christmas Stocking
Keep practicing! First attempts don't usually work out, you can return it to yarn and keep practicing!
Best comment ever!!! I laughed so hard at this🤣
Load More Replies...Not according to the full picture in the OP, which bp cut part off of. It's from the sales page for the crochet pattern she bought.
Load More Replies...I’ve been crocheting for 20 years and some of my projects still end up looking like cr*p.
Oh ffs, that's not the finished product on the right, that's the first few rows at the very start, of course that looks like a formless blob! ... I'll stop reading through this list now. I'm surprised to find it makes me quite angry when people put out wrong information like this post, or the other ones where people obviously didn't follow the instructions or didn't realize they were missing half the materials, and somehow blame that on Pinterest. I know that the "fail" part is about people failing to reproduce what they saw online, but blaming the site is what annoys me to no end. And I don't even have Pinterest.
YES! Most of these are done horribly so they can posts on sites like this. The christmas sweater one looked like they went out of their way to make it look REALLY s****y. And don't get me started on other posts🤦♀️
Load More Replies...Every crochet project looks crazy in the beginning. Also, that's a pretty advanced pattern. Not at all beginner friendly.
She just hasn't finished. That's the beginning and every crochet project looks like that no matter how good it turns out at the end
My Mother: "I Found This New Website, Pinterest, It's Very Cool". 10 Minutes Later: Easter Decorations
Not a bad idea, just use carrots with shorter greens, or tie them up with a ribbon
Tried Out An Embroidery Pattern I Saw On Pinterest
It looks fine, just don't show anyone the pattern and they'll be none the wiser.
I kind of like the result better than the original. More bold
Load More Replies...I think they were just showing off cuz that's not a fail. It's a whole different medium so it's going to be different.
Uh. Well the original isn't even embroidered so not sure why they thought it would work..
"Oh no, I saw something cool online, but changed it to my liking, and now I don't like it".
It looks like a coral snake is mutating into a greyhound dragon.
The expert also shared some tips for any readers out there who want to get started crafting. “Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most of my first craft and sewing projects looked wonky or ended up in the trash,” Brandy says. “My sweet husband pulled many out of the trash and set them aside because he knew I’d eventually calm down and have the patience to work on them someday. He was right.”
My Cousin Tried To Make Easter Eggs From Pinterest
That's WAY more than one black crayon worth of wax on it though. Like they did one and let it harden, then another and another. It's so thick unless they used a jumbo one and just set it on top and melted it to the egg
Rainbow Roses: Not Quite Right, But Still Interesting
The setup: red, green, and blue dyes. Split the rose's stem into 3 parts. Use plastic wrap to keep the stem happy.
The dyes: Danish. The green is very opaque, the red is slight, and the blue is transparent. I think these are real pigments, not just dyes.
After 18 hours - blue spots. After 36 hours - more blue spots on the petals and on the leaves. Close up after 36 hours - the rose is not happy.
You've never seen a rainbow rose? It's not photoshopped
Load More Replies...The rainbow rose is specifically created by injecting pigments into the stem at specific times of the rose's growth. It cannot be done this way. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/rainbow-roses/
May I just say most of, if not all of your comments are incredibly interesting and well informed!
Load More Replies...I see it's not happy, but it's pretty the way it is. I'm going to try this.
Looks to me from the last photo that the rose was not cut properly because not enough water was getting to the head. This could also be why the dye was not getting to the head since the dye was in the water.
Followed The Pinterest Directions Exactly
For such things you can't just wing it. You need to get the right material. In this case, mica powder and liquid safe glitter that won't bleed colour
My galaxy jar looked just like the pinterest pic. Why didn't they use cotton, and why did they use filthy water????
Reading the original post's comments, they are guessing that the person used the wrong kind of paints that when mixed, just turn into the kind of mess you see.
Load More Replies...I made two of these for my daughters and they came out pretty alright. Only issue was the jar leaked a bit.
“Taking a break and working on [a craft project] a few days later worked out in my favor a few times,” Brandy added. “I learned from my mistakes and am now to a point where I can recreate the projects that I see on Pinterest. If everything is easy, you won’t learn. So dig in, get messy, make a mistake or two and grow your skills!”

Thank You Pinterest And Social Media For Giving My Wife The Idea To Make A Paper Tree For My Son's Winnie-The-Pooh-Themed Second Birthday

Did you use self raising flour for the salt dough? That makes it bubble like this when drying. Use plain flour with salt dough.
I feel like a lot of these are only fails because they didn't follow the instructions whatsoever, and why does the pan look wet ?
it seems u baked them. next time use less heat, much less (30-45 celcius) ; and do not sprinkle water.the dough should be dry.
No way that's water in a hot oven, it would of evaporated by now. I'm guessing they used some kind of nonstick spray
Load More Replies...use polymer clay instead....it will retain the shape, never mold, and will not be eaten by mice or ants...you can do this!
I would have thought the pinterest ones are modeling clay not dough. Otherwise they're never going to last.
It's salt dough. No leavener, kind of like homemade play doh. You can use it to make ornaments and things. Looks like the person in the 2nd pic may have used self-rising flour by mistake.
Load More Replies...Despite not being the same as the original, they're not bad in their own right.
I had the ones I made bubble up a little bit too. It took a really long time to bake but they came out pretty good. Looked nice painted.
We All Need A Laugh, So Enjoy My Epic Pinterest Fail From This Morning
I actually did some excellent quick thinking and poured the clementine caramel out of the pan and onto some oiled parchment and laid another piece on top. I’ve now got clementine caramel shards to use instead.
Knowing how to rescue a potential failure is a serious talent in its own right
try baking them for a long time at a low and slow tempt to dehydrate rather than caramelize
I dehydrated some oranges for my Xmas tree one year and saved them in a closet for the next year. Don’t do it! I guess they weren’t quite dry enough. It was a breeding ground for moths. Yikes!
If they’re fully dry it’s ok. I kept mine in ziplock bags and they seemed the same the next year (kind of to my surprise)
Load More Replies...If you just let the lemon dry, this could work as a way to keep cats out of your Christmas tree.
If you have a knack for starting DIY projects that never turn out how you expected them to, Our Home Made Easy has a few explanations for what might be going wrong with your crafts. First, they note that many people tend to underestimate the amount of work these projects take. We don’t allow ourselves enough time, or we quit before we’re finished because we’re in over our heads. To avoid this, be sure that you understand the requirements of the project before starting, and don’t work under tight deadlines.
Pinterest Failed Me
This is the equivalent of substituting 8 of a recipes 10 ingredients then complaining it came out nothing like the picture & tastes horrible.
Exactly this! This one feels like they failed on purpose just for the internet points.
Load More Replies...How do you mess up a PAPER BAG PUPPET? Crafts don't get much easier than this.
That's on you, so stop whining. This is like the time when a friend made "my" vanilla cake, but instead of 250g real butter used fat free yoghurt and a tsp olive oil. Nope. And no friend of mine anymore
No longer a friend because they failed at making 'your' cake... that's harsh.

Yes, they morphed 2 trees together. White on top, green on bottom and used the paint to blend in the middle
Load More Replies...You have to have a layer of light blue before you paint it white. I did this several times. Finally, someone told me about the light blue layer.
Looks cute in its own way. But not worth the waste of ten non-environmentally friendly spray cans.
It still looks cool, it's just it doesn't look like the pinterest one.
My grandma wrapped a sassafras tree in cotton to make a Christmas tree.

pretty sure they're supposed to have helium in them. balloons don't float on their own, you know
No one should be using helium for balloons anyway. It's a finite resource, people. Don't go crying about it when you can't get an MRI in the future!
Most of these "fails" are because they didn't use the same materials or follow all the directions.
I’ve done this! You need helium and a lot more of it than you think, it’s a practice thing :)
I have a feeling that they may not have used helium? Helium lifts the balloon way more, so even with the weight of confetti it can still float.
It’s also easy to start a project without realizing what skills are necessary to complete it. If you don’t have a sewing machine or you haven’t used yours in a decade, creating your child’s Halloween costume from scratch might be an incredible challenge. Our Home Made Easy notes that sometimes it’s best to simply outsource labor or pay someone to have a project done, such as tiling your home, if you’re not confident doing it yourself.
Milk Jug Elmer. Almost Got It
You need very thin/light tissue paper to make the decoupage blend like the one on the left. You can't use bits of colored regular paper. It's too heavy.
I love it because this has just reminded me of a childhood memory I had almost forgot. I loved Elmer, I even used to have a multicoloured patchwork wool coat (ah, 90's fashion :') ) as a child and used to call it my Elmer coat xD
My Friend Based Her Graduation Cap Off Of A Pinterest Post
Definitely, if you like the „live love laugh“ sorta stuff that’s the choice. I’d rephrase as „my pigheaded unwillingness to face facts saw me through“ but that’s my case.

After Multiple Tries, Looks Like I'll Be Buying An Ink Pad
And either press down more or soften up your plaster (or whatever tf they used).
Load More Replies...Don't just press down on the plaster, press off the plaster. By that I mean put the plaster on the ground kneel over like doing a pushup and push off the plaster. That's gonna create more force and get a better handprint. For the footprint, literally step onto the plaster like you're walking, don't just push your foot on it.
Make a fist and press sideways into the clay then use your finger to make toes. Problem solved.
microwave the polymer clay just ever so lsightly to warm...it shoudl work better
A Definite Pinstrosity In The Making
We used to do this (back in the sixties and seventies) with those empty Chianti bottles that were wrapped in straw. We’d use them as candleholders, and use colored candles and/or melt crayons in the flame and let them drip down the sides to achieve a pretty cool effect.
Agreed. Paint drips would be so much more successful.
Load More Replies...Again, my crayon pumpkin came out so incredibly good. I don't know how this one got so messed up.

You should charge for this advice. When they fail, you’re five years away and warranty expired.
Load More Replies...The 2nd one looks like aliens are using their tentacles to steal Neptune.
Did anyone else see some green alien with a white, hairy head at first?
practice makes perfect, also using the right type of paint. Painting with oil, watercolour, acrylic etc paints can all feel very different. Though if you want a quick cheat for a smoother looking "painting" that you can also be a bit steadier with, I recommend trying out posca pens ;)
I hate to admit this but at first glance it looked like the Grinch wearing a fluffy red and white Santa hat mounting the ornament lol! Not enough coffee yet this morning apparently!
Tried My Best
working with seed beads is really tough the first time around, they did better than I ever could!
This is a difficult stitch and that's a really good first try! It takes a lot of practice to master. I used to make them 30+ years ago.
If they don't work out as earrings, you could easily repurpose them are Christmas tree ornaments-they'd look good on a miniature tree.
No More Painting With Circles
i'm sorry, but what did you expect from a little kid? (it looks like a little kid in the pic)
not a fail, just kids being kids! There's some good circles under the fingerpainting after all
Pinterest Inspiration On Top, My Attempt On The Bottom
And from the look of it, prime, then do two coats of white. Not a single patchy coat. And take all the handles etc off before you paint. Easier to paint a flat surface than around things.
Load More Replies...Bottom one has a bit of an old farmhouse vibe anyway because of the drawer pulls, so the look is a good match.
Girlfriend Got Inspiration From Pinterest
Pinterest Fail
Just save it for 10 months and put it out for Halloween. Edit: Typo. Thank you Ubiquitous.
I'm assuming it was made by a child, in which case, it's cute. I made something similar with my kid last christmas, we made a snowman using an actimel (those yoghurt drinks) bottle filled with sand as the body/base so it had weight, then you just use a polystyrene ball as the head (which was wrapped in tissue paper), and decorate how you want. Doesn't even have to be a snowman, I'm thinking of applying the same tactic to make a witch for halloween. x3 edit: will mention it helps to have a glue gun otherwise the head can be annoying to stick onto the bottle body heh. xP
The only way to kill a toilet roll vampire is a stake through it's heart!
Pinterest Really Let Me Down
They didn't try very hard. Ribbon and a better whisk and it would have been great.
We Nailed It For Sure
Put liquids that don't mix, like oil and water, with food due. Put the densest/ heaviest first, and proceed to lightest. I don't know how they kept the dye from mixing.
Nope. You just add different amounts of salt (or sugar) to each color to make each a different density. Then let the kids experiment to see if they can make a rainbow without them mixing

What You Expect vs. What You Get
They had courage making that,;i didn't have kindness when I said that.
I prefer the right, something handmade is more meaningful than the printed left imo
There is nothing to indicate that the left is not handmade.
Load More Replies...Calligraphy pen and ink rather than ink and paintbrush would make it easier to get the desired result!
try using a calligraphy pen next time. (after some practice to get used to it) I've amassed quite the collection of fountain pens and quills. It becomes quite addictive and can be great to de-stress imo :)

Nope, but at least they executed it well. No. 2 just begs for a coup de grâce. (Pun intended. Actually I'm a bit proud about it ☺️)
Load More Replies...Not crazy about the idea, but the 2nd fridge looks SO much cooler in terms of design. I mean, if you wanted your fridge to look like an Easter chocolate, you nailed it.
Tape measure and a straight edge would make a world of a difference here.
I'm sure I played the second one on the Atari 2600 back in the day. Was terrible then too.
Am I missing something here? The second one still has painters tape on it - all it is, is painters tape and hasn't been painted yet, so not finished? I'm confused on this one
The tape is likely washi tape - papery texture, used for arts and crafts, and a decorative item meant to be seen. (Also meant to be artfully applied with the "measure thrice, cut once, careful where you put it" approach instead of "hold my beer and gimme some scissors. Trust me, it'll look great")

I’m so tired of these people complaining and they can’t be bothered to even use the same material as the original craft.
How do you expect it to look the same if you use different materials? So stupid!
Pinterest Expectation vs. Reality
"Every day" is two words in this context (= each day). Everyday as one word just means "ordinary".
the only Issue I see is that they have wrote "everyday" as opposed to "every day" but otherwise, I'd say it's done pretty well considering it's only inspired by the one on the left. I love the background colours.
I think some of these, very unkindly, are children's efforts being passed off as "fails" for a laugh.
Most of these weren't fails. Some were too complicated, some were completely different, and a lot of them were cute but they were comparing them to the pinterest version
Read the instructions and follow them is a very hard thing for some people. The artists have put a lot of effort and hard work into finding put how to do it, but some idiots always think they can just wing it and skip steps or substitute things because they lack the experience to understand why it's important that the ingredients have all the properties named in the instructions and that you indeed have to do all the steps exactly as described. I see this mostly with cake 'fails' when people don't wait until the cake is fully cooled and their frosting melts or when they add milk to their frosting because they don't want to whip the butter long enough.
I think that either they didn't use the proper materials or didn't use enough of a material. Look at the string balls that used balloons for the shape for example; it takes more than a few times of being wrapped around the balloon for it to start to take shape. The crafter only used a few times or a shorter length of twine to wrap with so it, of course, looked crappy. The crayon art is not just a point the hairdryer and blast. Instead you use a lower heat temp and move it over the entire piece. I saw half assed attempts with elevated expectations.
When trying to copy something, one must have and use the same materials as the original or it's just not a proper copy. A lot of these would fit into this category as they didn't even use the same materials as the original. How can you make a leather boot if you use cardboard and tissue paper?
