Clarice is a British comic artist and cartoonist, currently based in Cardiff, who graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Art and Design. She shared: “I do two things. I draw, and I cook. They said ‘Hey, Clarice, you need a hobby,’ and unfortunately, I have to eat to survive, so I thought okay I’ll do that. Two birds, one stone, baby! I’m a working-class, broke bisexual and your favorite insufferable, raging feminist.”

When asked what drew her to the world of cartooning, Clarice wrote: “I essentially make memes, but now I hand draw them and someone pays me. It’s a flawless business plan and I get to use my art degree at the same time. They said it couldn’t be done!"

I was imagining it would just turn into and army jet, but this is cooler.

We were wondering about Clarice’s creative process. The artist explained how she comes up with ideas for her comics: “My comics exist as an outlet for whatever is getting on my nerves, be it myself or the world around me. Meaning that my comics are often either self-deprecating or salty. I think humor is a really powerful tool in making change, more than we give it credit for. There’s nothing that makes me want to change more than having my embarrassing, bad behavior mocked. If you’ve annoyed me, you know I’m about to go for the jugular in 4 panels or less. Unfortunately, most often I annoy myself.”

And to be honest, some people need to apply this to at least half their lifestyle.

Clarice also shared what she hopes the audience takes away from her comics.

“I did a personality test that said when I’m at my best I ‘express the personal and the universal, possibly in a work of art. Able to transform all their experiences into something valuable. Self-revealing and emotionally honest. Ironic view of self and life: can be serious and funny, vulnerable and emotionally strong.’ That’s all I really want. I’m just out here expressing myself and hoping someone who relates is comforted and entertained.

The test also said that when I’m at my worst I exhibit ‘delusional levels of self-hatred.’ Which is funny as hell and also evident in my art.”
