People talk a lot of smack on the internet, and when that happens on social media, then the rest of the world can be fortunate enough to be there to see the glory unfold. From devastating clapbacks to good-natured puns and every other type of delightfully witty reply, a Twitter account called Gems Of Replies is there to document it all - for our benefit.

You know that sensation so many of us get hours after a conversation or argument when we realize - “damn, I should’ve said [X] instead…”? Scrolling through this account is basically the opposite of that as you get to see every moment of glory where someone said exactly what needed to be said.

I think it depends on the context. My native language is almost dead because people gave English too much priority. Now only villagers and old, established families can speak purely in our language, everyone else tries to talk in as much English as possible.

English is the most widely understood language in the world. It's how Russians speak to Chinese, Germans speak to Japanese. It's mandatory for air travel. Most programming languages are written in it. Even watching badminton tournaments in Thailand, where one Thai team is playing another, all the scoring and communication is in English. It's also devoid of accents, which makes it a lot easier to use a standard keyboard.

It's good to hear positive things said about English. Although it is spoken by so many people, they are many disadvantages given by people (including Pandas!) attempting or learning to speak it.

I remember learning that there are more than 500 Native North American languages, more than 400 from the Canadian First Nations Peoples. And the overwhelming majority are no longer spoken or spoken by very few people, usually the elders of the group. It is very sad.

At any given point, one language will be the one used for commerce. French and German and Italian had their time. I feel like Cantonese Chinese will be the main one soon.
