A step towards bringing the Muslim world into fashion was made back in 2016 by Muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan, who presented a collection at New York Fashion Week. Inspired by her hometown Jakarta, the designer presented flowy trousers and tunics, and all models were wearing hijabs.
She wrote on Instagram: "I believe fashion is one of the outlets in which we can start that cultural shift in today's society to normalize hijab in America so as to break down stereotypes and demystify misconceptions.” And the standing ovations proved society is finally moving towards this.

Islam forbids extravagance, over-spending and waste - the person who believes in the necessity of religion is expected to have negative attitudes toward materialism. These women are the posterchildren of complete ignorance of their own 'faith' which is now being used as a means of special treatment in scared western countries. In addition, the niqab, hijab and other head coverings are NOT MUSLIM and are NOT found anywhere in the koran. Nowhere. They are tribal relics adopted by religious nuts as a perpetual means of subjugating women. Getting really tired of tolerating people who have adopted fantasy stories as guidelines for life

Every religion evolves. The variety of head coverings have been imposed as a sign of modesty... which is a form of social control. The fact that these women are taking prescibed garments and expanding an identity within their cultures. Which is to say: beware the "no true Scotsman" fallacy... I don't know if these women identity as faithful/observant, and finding ways to break away from any type of fundamentalist dogma should be applauded.

actually ... not. The first time in history we find covering of a woman's head, is in the Laws of Hammurabi. Women were divided to "ladies" and "prostitutes" and the "prostitutes" were the ones to cover their head by law. Later the covering went on and on from many and different patriarchal societies that treated women as objects, so the coast was clear for men to participate in all the aspects of financial life. From the Chinese to the Greeks and from the Arabs to the Church. As of the above pics, nice try with all the models in a western background. But even in our eyes they fake and just another fashion show.

BP stands up for diversity and freedom, but is obsessed with Hijabis. It is indeed very fashionable in these photos, and probably these women wear it voluntarily. Arguably, though, most women don't, either due to legislation or societal pressure. Advocating the hijab as a piece of fashion thus feels wrong to me.

I get what you're trying tot say. I'm Muslim myself and many of us fight everyday against the patriarchal, archaic, so called religious views that are part part of some cultures and in essence don't have anything to do with religion. Men wanting to tell women how to be is still very 'popular' everywhere and logically to be found in areas torn apart by conflicts the people there have nothing to do with. It only takes a short history lesson to see this everywhere. BP was never obsessed with Hijabis and maybe you mean, Muslims in general. This was probably the second post ever I saw like this. The bottom line is: these are beautiful, stylish ladies enjoying life, something women should be able to do everywhere. I think they're just very pretty and fun, so just let them be, please. I don't wear a headscarf or something similar and dress just like my neighbours, still, it was enough for them to pick on me. If you try to find something to hate someone for, that's easy to do.

Regardless of being fashionable, the hijab is worn as a tool of oppression for millions of women worldwide. There's nothing glamorous about glorifying it. And despite what Western muslim women might say about it being a choice, we have no idea whether or not they are being forced to by an oppressive patriarchal figure such as a father, brother or husband at home or behind the scenes.

I am from Egypt in the middle east and women here are free to wear hijab or not, I started wearing when I was 38 years old without being asked the same goes in most of the Islamic countries except some region in Saoudi, so millions is a very big number I don't believe is correct, I immigrated to the US 3 years ago and I was astonished of how western society think we are leaving, I was asked several time how my tent looks like in Egypt! and I am an MBA holder :-)

I think those of us who are not from a Muslim culture will never fully understand it. Maybe if you lived there a long time. But even then it would be an opinion without the emotional load that the people (women) born in it carry.

You are absolutely correct in that you will never really understand hijab living in a minority muslim country. Thank you for realising that.I find it really annoying how we Muslims are schooled about our own religion by people who've probably never even met a muslim.many muslim women are pressured into adopting hijab and end up hating it and giving it up half way. On the other hand u'll be surprised to know the pushback many hijabis receive in their own communities. Some are told to ditch their hijab on their wedding day.some men pressure their wives to leave their hijab so that they can show of their beuty to friends. My sister has been flatly told by another muslim women to take of her hijab for a job. The list goes on. Also not practicing hijab is not a one way ticket to freedom. Look at the high rates of plastic surgery in brazil, south k and lebabon.look at the stupid mandatory high heels work policy in japan etc..
