In my opinion, pugs and bulldogs are ugly as hell. Especially when compared to other dogs. Their face is smushed! How can any human find that cute is something I will never understand.

Know a man, a big big man, and his tiny partner would slap him, beat him with a baseball bat, cut him, burn him, scream at him everyday. He said he stayed for the kids, to protect them. She said if you ever say anything who will believe you? He tried to kill himself. He was scared everyday but because he is a giant buff guy no one would ever believe him. He had urges to fight back but knew he would just end up in jail and never see his kids again. So he just took it.

Absolutely. We all learned in kindergarten that we never use our bodies to hurt other people's bodies. No one should slap, hit, or kick anyone. TV and certain social media glorifies the worst parts of humanity, and children lack the perspective of "dramatization", so they internalize the behavior they see as normal and acceptable.

From one parent to another - Children are not pawns for their parents. You put them at risk every time you use them on social media. Also, children will treat their parents (and others) the way they have been treated. If you want a respectful child then you need to treat them with respect. If you let them do whatever they want then you are raising the next generation of Karens. So sad.

Many years ago when I was a teenager, I said to my dad that parents should respect their kids. He was shocked, because for him giving respect was an inferior being submissive to a superior. The moral here is that you don't become a human just by being born as one. It takes a lifetime of learning.

'Bouta call out all the homophobes on here....It's ok to be a part of the lgbtq+ community, it's ok to be confused about your place in the lgbtq+ community, it's completely valid to identify as Bi or Pan etc. (you do not need to 'pick one'), transgender people are valid, being non-binary is valid. Every person deserves to be loved and treated human regardless of their sexuality or gender.

I agree wholeheartedly! I especially empathize with pre-pubescent or pubescent children who are feeling great anxiety and pressure to identify their gender-identity AND sexual-partner preference. At age 8 and 9??!! Our identity and development is so obviously on a spectrum throughout our lives. I have a very hard time discussing this with people who believe only in "normalcy" being "two genders as male and female" and "one attraction as heterosexuality". I sincerely don't understand close-mindedness nor people being unwilling to learn about other beings in the world.

In those years before reliable birth control, my mother bore five children; together, we produced seven off-spring, one if whom is severely mentally disabled and won’t be reproducing, one of whom died as a child, one of whom is schizophrenic and very likely will not have children, and one of whom has already stated she doesn’t want any children. everything we do stays on the planet and goes right back into the cycle. you cant "kill" a planet. its just magma and rocks thats it. but if your refering to plants and stuff then yes we are slowly decreasing its population but for all of it to die out it would take thousands of times of more polution than we already are putting out to ruin the ecosystem

YES! OR....at least a system to evaluate for mental and emotional instability and diseases like alcoholism, addiction (including sexual addiction), Alzheimers. But it can not be a subjective test, like a doctor's "opinion". It has to be something objective like an brain scan (if it is yet possible to identify such conditions this way right now). Every candidate should have to do this as a requirement to running for office....any office in government.

I have a disease that will kill me in a few years. Between now and then my mind will stay intact but my body will lose all ability to even eat or breathe on my own. My friends and family want me to stick it out so they can have me in their lives. But many have ghosted me because they are afraid I’ll end my life, which has been full and beautiful, before I choke to death or can’t suck air into my lungs. They say that would be selfish. I think they’re being selfish.

I've never agreed with "suicide is selfish" as an argument. You choose your own path. It's wonderful when people can come into your life and light a path that you did not see which will inspire you to continue. But in some cases (such as a terrible disease) you really can see that the only way forward is rife with suffering. You should have the right to choose whatever leads to the least amount of suffering.

So, just last week my mother had a conversation with her aunt. Aunt has a very aggressive cancer and treatment is just stopping it from getting worse but will not make it any better. Aunt called my mam to tell her that she has decided to stop treatment and let the cancer run it's course. Aunt is looking for a family member to "help her stop the pain" when she get too ill to enjoy her life. As strict Irish Catholics she can't do anything herself and most of the family will not help her. She called my mam to tell her she was going to ask me help. My Mam's conflicted because she believes it's the right thing to do but doesn't want me involved. Personally, I'm a believer in the 'your body, your choice' train of thought and that you should do some things on your own terms!. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm supportive or your right to choose when your life should end and it disturbs me that your family and friends have ghosted you. Fate has handed you an enormous challenge on every level of human existence; the suffering you are experiencing must be extreme. I sincerely hope you.ll be able to use your present abilities to create the best environment and situation for you to have a greater portion of comfort and peace. Continue to surround yourself with those people with whom you share positive moments and let the others fall to the waste side. If you live in the US, I hope you'll be able to locate yourself in a state that supports physician-assisted suicide. This will enable you to make the choices you want without having the extra pain of having to "fight against the system". Peace be with you.

You don't know me, but I fully support your decision to make a decision about with what in your life you are willing to cope! If we, as a society, encourage people to "get out of a bad marriage", "end a self-harming pregnancy", "not follow our parents' footsteps into a particular career" and we provide the legal means to do so...then WHY don't we legally allow people to make a choice about living with an illness that completely debilitates them? I believe, strongly, in physician-assisted suicide, and even contemplate moving to states in the USA which legally allow this.

Honestly, I had no clue about anything until the age of 20, even 25. And I am the person that has always had all her ducks in a row. By the way, I always apologize to my kids if I did or said something wrong and ask for their opinion and we discuss. And they always listen to what I have to say. Respect goes both ways.

My sister used to have this thing that all people were classified as a bird, a horse, or a muffin, according to the shape of their face. For instance, if someone has a somewhat pinched looking face or small delicate features, they were a bird. If they had a longish or squarish face, they were a horse. If they had more of a rounded face and didn't really fit in the other two categories, they were a muffin. I have no idea where this originated, but my sister is a stone cold weirdo so I would not be surprised if she just made it up herself. In case you were wondering, most of the people in my family are muffins, but my sister's husband is a horse.

Teenagers with opinions aren’t moody, sexuality is not a “choice” or phase, and being vegetarian or dieting doesn’t give you superiority over the kid next to you eating Cheetos. Also gummy fruit snacks are completely bussin as a snack and shouldn’t be reserved for kids.

Could not agree more...it's a classic. And IMHO, a follow-up book called "The Bar Sinister" written by Linda Berdoll and published in 1999 takes the story further and picks up right where the book ends...answering the question, in that author's mind, of what happens after the wedding. It reads very much like the author was influenced by this particular version of Pride and Prejudice starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, capturing the tone and voices of the actors in this production in particular. And it even gets a little saucy without becoming vulgar. It's an interesting potential future of the Darcys and a fun read for anyone who wants more of them.

You've had big problems long before the birth of social media. You need to address the problem, not look for excuses. It's not my intention to start a flame war here, but to use an example - Every time there is a mass shooting in the U.S, there is a lot of finger pointing. There are always suggestions that the blame lies with inadequate mental health care, video games, movie violence, education, rap music, death metal music, religion, lack of religion, the wrong religion, 'immoral' books etc. etc. The problem is the guns. Not background checks, age limits, magazine size, stock size, or automatic ability - the guns. The 2nd amendment is just an amendment, and can be amended. You use the 1st amendment like toilet paper, so I cannot see what is so precious about the 2nd.

That people found guilty of rape, murder or child molestation should be left alone for 15 minutes in a locked room with the victim's family. The family could either choose to forgive and move on or beat the ever lovin' tar out of the offender. I also believe that plea bargaining needs to be taken off the table in most cases...especially as it relates to violent crimes. I do believe that there should be more programs in prison like the ones in Louisiana that take rescued dogs and send them to the prison to be trained by inmates. Some of those dogs are well trained enough to become service dogs. It gives the dog another chance and gives a prisoner the means to care about someone else and motivations to do better while incarcerated.

and with "no parole" you can still get parole. it can be overturned quite easily in relation to the fact that is being called NO PAROLE. (that is also y someone once had over 100 life sentances + >1000 yrs., so it doesnt get overturned)

For me people who commited only one serious crime (murder rape) should go to prison+rehabilitation and be able to walk free afterwards (so they learn). But people who commit a violent crime a second time should never be allowed in society since they are a danger to us all.

Nah. The legal system is very flawed and too many people are found to be innocent/not guilty many years later; imagine doing that to someone found guilty and then later finding out they were not? The first paragraph I dont agree with. Plea bargaining works both ways. They killed someone for sure, but we don't really want to spend time with the whole trial thing because hey, they did it. So if you spare us the time of a trial we'll drop your charge down to "x" and you can be eligible to get out. Wrong. But, also, people who can't afford decent defense and the authorities throw at you it's a slam dunk for them and that you don't stand a snowballs chance in hell, so if you plead to "y" it's a lesser sentance than if you lost at trial. That's how a lot of innocent people end up in prison. Totally agree with the dog programs.

I agree, however, having gone to Catholic school where we wore uniforms it's cheaper than wearing regular clothes, there is no making fun of or bullying someone because of what they wear as their parents can't afford any different. We were all equal. No fashion judgement. And you don't have to spend time figuring out what to wear the next day and whether it's going to look cool. These are just the advantages I, and a lot of other girls and parents found. But flipping out about widths of straps on tops, being able to see bra straps etc. Please. Just provide my kid with a quality education. That's what school is for. BEING SAFE AT SCHOOL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING!!!

In my catholic school there was a ton of judgement and bullying even with the uniforms. Because you still have a backpack, better shoes, a nicer hair, a better looking body... Uniforms just prevent kids from expressing themselves

The onus of responsibility for a man's gaze has always been on a woman to do anything to divert it - sadly and disgustingly. I fully feel that we should not ever have to do anything to prevent ourselves from being raped - teach people not to rape. And if that seems so unreasonable or you find yourself thinking "Yeah, well, you should still make sure you do everything you can to stay safe," then you're still catering to the patriarchy.

If there really is such a thing as a “soul” that exists beyond the human body, then you already know what death will be like. Too bad you can’t remember it. (1)There are a lot of religious systems that believe in something like a soul. Egyptians embalmed their dead so carefully that the soul would recognize its body. (2) The "too bad you can't remember it" makes me think this person is under the impression that all religions that believe in a soul also believe in reincarnation, which is not the case. Many religions believe that you have one life and then an afterlife, and are not reborn. Some believe you are only reborn under certain conditions.(3) People are allowed their opinion on heaven and hell, but the proceeding comments that this person have made regarding religion makes me think they have not really looked into various belief systems and do not possess a sophisticated enough knowledge to distinguish one from another.

It depends on your definition of "soul". The ancient Greeks called it a 'psyche', and defined it as the total mind, conscious and unconscious, the ability to reason, have feelings, and so on. They believed that souls were not necessarily mortal or immortal. Aristotle said that body and soul are matter and form respectively. My personal opinion is, I think they were not far off. Your body is just matter, but what make you YOU is the soul and is that energy that drives your brain. Science teaches us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed, so what happens to the energy when we die? It gets converted into other forms of energy to live on forever, helping to power on the universe.

How would you already know what death will be like? Are you proposing that the existence of a soul requires the existence of reincarnation? (Sounds like something straight from Socrates 😜) You’re assuming though that if souls are immortal, that means they existed before the body. Whereas Christians at least believe that the soul came into existence with the body and then just never dies. Thus heaven versus hell, because if there’s no reincarnation there have to be places for it to go afterward.

There should be an upper age limit on voting in federal elections as well as term limits on congress. My grandma refused to vote (in federal elections) after 70 stating that she shouldn’t be responsible for what happens in 10 or 20 years, it should be up to the younger generation. Voting in the USA should be compulsory and fined if you don’t vote.

The U.S. needs to abolish the Electoral College and move to voting for President the same way we vote for everyone else. Have the primary in the spring, and the general in the fall. Abolish PACs and allow not more than $100 per donor...ID required and recorded.

I'm with you at the first, but not the end. Forcing someone to vote is (especially in a 2 party system) is not democratic at all. It should be acceptable to say, 'I don't know' or 'I don't like either option'. It's would be a better idea to have a 'vote of no confidence' option.

Could you not spoil your ballot? Had this argument with my husband years back as he dropped that he'd never voted before 'cos there's no one worthy of it'. In my opinion, you shouldn't moan about who's in power if you couldn't be a$$ed to turn up and vote and I count voting as putting in a ballot, even if that ballot has a 🍆 on it to show how you feel about the candidates.

I disagree with people being forced to vote. The last thing we need is people voting with no idea who they are actually voting for. You see this in today's politics. Trump got in, not because he came across as a great leader, but because he claimed to be antigovernment and he has the brain of a 3rd grader. Trump supporters are some of the biggest flag waving, "USA is the best", zealots around. Yet they support the guy that has taken the most anti-American actions of any politician. Same is true for Biden. How many of us voted for Biden, not because we thought he represented what we want out of this country, but in order to remove a menace. While I normally try to avoid that, in Trumps case it was necessary. My point is (IMO) the reason Democrats are as ineffective as they are is because, for the most part, they rely on people being anti-Republican, rather than pro-Democrat

Literally thought this same thing when my kids were little and decided to limit the violence they saw and to not be as prudish as my initial instincts wanted me to be. Obviously I didn't do things like "Hey kids, look, sex on the screen! You should check it out!" but we definitely raised our kids in a more sex-positive and anti-violence way than most people and they have really great attitudes and responsibilities towards their sexuality now as young adults.

You shouldn't verbally attack people who disagree with you. Democracy is about having the freedom to believe what they want and express those beliefs. A lot of people are claiming to be pushing for equal rights and freedom of voice, but those same people shame and suppress those that disagree with them. There's also a difference between hating and disagreeing. For example, say I didn't agree with the LGBTQ+ community. But these are thoughts and feelings I kept to myself. I have Gay and Trans friends that I treat the same way I would treat my other friends. They wouldn't even expect I felt like this unless I told them. If I still love the people in the LGBTQ+ Community like I would anyone else, do I really deserve to be talked to like I'm a horrible, evil person? If I actively discriminated against them, that's one thing, but just not liking one of a person's traits is not a crime. Even so, YOU CAN'T FIGHT HATE WITH HATE! The only way to fight hate is with love. Turning against each other only makes the animosity grow. We need to come together and accept our differences and work to make the world a better place.

Some ideas should be (verbally) attacked, vigorously, and wherever they are found. Everyone sane hates the Nazis. Let's use them as an example. Imagine a Nazi was telling you that you have the right to disagree silently with the Third Reich, but you should not have the right to tell them what evil bastards they are. Because telling them their ideology is not only stupid, but evil is a form of hate speech and by speaking out about them you hurt their fee-fees. Disagreeing with them they say is violence, and so when they decide to kill you, they say, its self defense. Maiming you is something to brag about, to be proud of, because you said something they didn't like and now people feel justified in hounding you at work, at home, and online. After all, you engaged in hate speech. How dare you have a contrary opinion.

Molly, you should tell your friends how you feel. You need to be honest with them and let them decide if they want to hang out with you if those are your opinions. When you say you don't agree with them, you're implying that you think they chose this life. I cannot make this any simpler: gay people do not choose to be gay. Thinking they shouldn't be in a relationship with the same sex or whatever is basically the same as wishing them a lonely and loveless life. And I wouldn't consider you my friend if you wished that on me.

To be honest it's probably better that Molly does not share her feelings. A lot of young people get their views from their parents and others around them growing up. You need to understand that disagreeing with a core part of what make someone who they are is not a small thing for an individual to take. Democracy does not mean that people have to like you regardless of your views. It's an unrealistic expectation that they are simply going to be, or should ok with you if they find out how you feel about them. You're right, it's not a crime to not like a single trait of an individual but it's also not a crime for them to stop speaking to you because of it. YOU CAN'T FIGHT HATE WITH HATE, but you should not expect love in return from your hate either.

I'm with you John Smith! Also made me annoyed with Attenborough. Here in UK at least, his word is gospel - imagine the same documentary but the emphasis is on pointless packaging. Throw in some footage of the damage caused by westerners wanting latest gadgets. Sure it is hard for every day people to tackle the big problems, but he could have chosen a target with a bigger impact. In his defence, he might have assumed the masses would start taking these issues more seriously rather than just ban straws and feel happy.

Hmmmmm. Interesting topic. I‘lol admit I have a number of chronic issues and a couple of autoimmune issues. The two that are most applicable to this topic are IBS and Lymphocytic Colitis. Just trust me that you don’t want either of them. Most corn is GMO anymore and I have problems with the IBS flaring up when I eat it. If we’re lucky enough to get a hold of non- GMO corn, I’m fine. Same with oats and oatmeal. I’m gluten and lactose intolerant any way you look at it, but I can tolerate some wheat flour if it’s non-GMO and real sourdough. I can tell which meats we eat have been overly medicated with antibiotics and crap because I’ll get nauseous. All antibiotics make me nauseous. Yes, I have to be relatively careful about what I eat. And right now I’m on steroids for the Lymphocytic Colitis, hoping for remission. But that would lead to my own rather controversial opinion!

For me this is more about symantics. What the OP is getting at is all food is GM. From the first time nomadic people decided which seeds to plant - based on this tastes good or this grows well - humans have been modifying the genes of plants for our own needs. I too have autoimune issues, and tend towards organic produce as certain chemicals and pesticides can flare up my symptoms. This has nothing at all to do with the genetics of the crop. When most people talk of GM food, what they really mean is the genes have been modified in a lab rather than by cross breeding. In theory, i see no problem with this. Splicing codes so vegatables contain more nutrition for the same amount of water for example could completly change the life chances of millions. I personly find this progress completly desirable and natural while respecting those who prefer caution to assess the effects on the environment and wildlife. Unfortunatly, in practice rather than using genetic knowledge to save lives

Bikers and drivers should never drive on the same road. Bikers are too vulnerable compared to people in cars, and drivers hate them. There should be bike lanes, and some streets should be reserved for bikes.

The bike thing has always disturbed me. I dont necessarily dislike them (unless it's a peleton on a Saturday morning), but who thinks it's a good idea to have a 1/2 ton or more vehicle driving on the same road right beside a person riding a small 2 wheeled transportation that could easily be knocked or fall over into my car's path and the only thing to protect them is a helmet? Other parts of your body gets damaged, that will kill you too. It just seems that the odds are really against the bike rider. Also, provides for a pretty stressful time for the driver of the car. Bike lanes are great but it's hellish for the cars trying to make turns.

I visited Tofino BC and they have a dedicated bike and longboarding (skateboarding) lane set about 10 feet away from the road. Always struck me as safer than Vancouver deathtraps.

Bikes have been around for a long time and there is no reason to believe they're going to disappear any time soon. They require no fuel, provide exercise, and are relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. The driving safety issue is really the only downside.

The initial question was regarding a controversial opinion, not necessarily a conspiracy theory, which I believe you were alluding to: The passing of time does not affect one’s controversial opinion. Having a personal opinion is not the same as discussing a conspiracy theory. Oswald was firing from an obvious position, at a moving target. As a trained US marine, he would have known to fire from a point where he didn't need to adjust his sight on a target, hence it would be logical to fire from a position where the target was heading towards him. Therefore, 'Back and to the left, back and to the left'. The shot that ultimately killed him.

All right, I know I might get backlashed for this, but here we go.. I think that the BLM movement has gone too far. I'm not saying this because I'm racist white trash, I'm saying this because they're rioting and burning buildings without any consequences as well as removing the memories of the people who shaped our country. Also, the fact that we have to mention race in news stories?? Like if a WHITE man kills a WHITE man, that doesn't get mentioned. But if a WHITE man kills a BLACK man it's racist. Racism is not always a factor in this type of stuff, and there are other motives. Finally, everything is offensive nowadays. I mean, they'll label anything you say that they don't like as something or the other and they'll get all their friends and bash you for it. I just think that it's stupid.. Whew! ok, so the “BLM movement” as you said isn’t speaking for all protesters or news sites. in every instance of a protest or fight against something there are people who use the movement to try and be a hero or live out their dreams of destroying the government or whatever. these people are not the BLM movement or what it stands for. you have to understand that the BLM movement is a movement for peace and equality. the people rioting are just angry and causing more harm than helping but this doesn’t mean that the i tire movement is wrong. also of corse news stations will be pushing race in their articles, race is a very popular and weighted discussion in the world right now and the news wants people to read the articles so they will put in as much controversial stuff as they can. and you say that everything is offensive now, well it may be true that there are a lot of thingslike cancel culture, you should try and ask why something hurts someone and understand where they are coming from.

Giga Bit, I think you are beginning to see the wider problems with the race discussion in the US, and the media coverage. Its not just BLM, its the entire race-affinity activism groups and our willingness to tolerate one race-affinity group's racism over another because we have different rules and expectations of people based on their race. An Example: "White Power" is racist (rightly so), "Black Power" is viewed as a call for social progress/equality.

Quit talking about the BLM movement like it’s one centralized, homogeneous, monolithic movement. There is no President of Black Lives Matter signing a decree that says, “Now we will burn things.” What you have is millions of righteously angry people effectively demonstrating and communicating, individually and in varying group sizes, and then some outliers who, yes, take it too far. That’s literally like saying football fans have gone too far because 100 of 60,000 people went wild after a game.

Or the memories of the millions of people of color who loved & cared for the land before white folks landed & destroyed it with their greed? Or the millions of people of color who LITERALLY built the "White House" and CA. railroads? What about the memories of THOSE people who shaped "our" country? Did YOU learn about "THEM" in school or were their (forced) contributions never mentioned at all? It's why most don't know "our country" was built on the backs, sweat, rape & suffering of millions of slaves who weren't even buried with their names on their gravestones! You need to wear another pair of shoes for a while & get a new perspective.

Ok, I'm not antivaxx, but honestly I think it's kind of scary that the government can control what we put into our bodies, and potentially restrict people from living the same lives as people that went along with what the government says. I get that in this situation, it is what's right, but think of the future, where our leaders can mandate what we put inside ourselves. Honestly that is kind of scary.

We should globally let kids and young adults learn foreign languages and politics of different countries and then let them choose their citizenship when they are, let's say, 20. Until then - they'd have no country of origin but full access to medical care, schooling etc. Countries would start to actually develop and take care about citizens as they would want to have more hands to work.

Yeah, how many languages can you learn by 20? When and how do you start with your choosing process? For example, you're only 12 and your family presses you to pick 10 countries THEY would like you to choose from, because at this age, you barely know anything about them. What if you become disillusioned with the country you chose and you have to start again, but you're out of time? Plus: nobody would start develop a country when they can just move into another (because it would be cruel to let only the young ones to migrate).

On what skills or abilities would you test the 25 & under group? I know it's proven that response time slows down dramatically after age 65 (I think it actually is after age 60)as does visual acuity, so I strongly agree with testing the over 65 idea (I am 67 btw). But the under 25 group just took their driving tests and passed at (approximately) age 17. That's a mere 8 years. 65 year olds took their driving exams almost 50 years ago---a very long time ago! I don't necessarily disagree with you, Earl Grey, I'd just like to know what and how you'd test those younger drivers if they were already tested relatively recently.

Here's my compromise - every time you go to renew your license you have to retake your test. That way it will weed out anyone who was able to get their license but shouldn't have and those who should no longer have them (for whatever reason). If you have had your license for 16+ years and can't pass the driver's exam, then you probably shouldn't have your license at all.

I think if classes on Parenting and Birth Control were made mandatory, a refresher class at age 30 would be necessary because as a society we are constantly learning new techniques and advances in science (re: sexuality and birth control) as well as in education and psychology (re: child rearing & parenting). I believe it's especially vital for us to have an educated citizenry in these two areas (The prompt was for us to post our controversial opinions, wasn't it?). Additionally, more people are postponing having children till they're in their 30's. They would benefit from a parenting refresher course (as would their children) when it has been 15 years since they last studied it.

Parenting classes are not just about people who want to be parents. They're insanely good for people to address their home environments, and understand how they were raised so they can make better decisions in the future. You'd be surprised how many people never question their parents, even after their own kids are born. It changed my life in college when my professor asked us what parenting style we were raised under. I hadn't thought about it and had lived under denial. Just because you won't be a parent doesn't mean you'll never esxtensively be around children. If you ever have to interact with them or market to them, you can pick up useful tidbits.

Now what would be nice is if there were more forms that were more reliably reversible and easier to do. So.... that would mean that everyone is completely aware of their future, and that circumstances never change in anyone's life. For example- I was raised in poverty, and didn't make substantial money until I was nearing my 30s. My husband & I both make sizable incomes, but do specialized work, so if we lost our jobs, we'd have to take lower paying ones. Would we have a child in our 30s, then the child magically disappears if our circumstances change?

You bring up a good question. I'd say this entry works within the context of ending cyclical poverty. When impoverished people have kids, it often leads to cyclical poverty (where the kids live like their parents and the grandkids live like their parents' parents, etc). Within this context, temporary sterilization would probably help impoverished people become closer to their spouses, save up money, and advance their standards of living before reproducing. Cyclical poverty is a very potent problem in any given culture because even if the impoverished kids grow up and leave that environment, it will still be a generation or 2 before they are fully aware of how much that poverty negatively affected their world views. If industrious, self-made people have kids and fall on hard times, there's a better chance they will make a comeback in time, and they'll learn from the situation so they don't repeat it.

You apply for psychological evaluation and background check and agree to pay for the process to allow it to happen up front. The hoops we make people go through to adopt a child seem to be a pretty good place to start for people who want to create a new one. If I want to adopt a brand new baby girl, I have to go through a full background check and evaluation then pay for all of the mother's expenses up front. This proves I am willing and capable to raise a new life in this world. I grew up in a home surrounded by foster brothers and sisters. I've seen the cost of letting people not ready have a kid way too much. It needs to be harder. We all make mistakes when we are young and they should be forgiven but a new life should be filled with someone ready to nurture it NOW.

In the context of the story there is a reason why he is called the "Mad Titan". His blinkered fixation is ultimately borne out of xenophobia, because the power granted by the combined Infinity Stones, and wielded by someone as powerful as Thanos, could just as easily have made the Universe able to sustain all life. His view that arbitrary annihilation was more fair than selective murder was flawed from the start.

Tolerance does not equal celebration. The very definition of tolerance is that you tolerate someone’s actions, existence, whatever, even though you don’t agree with it. Currently it’s being used to say “if you don’t agree with me and celebrate the fact that I exist and do the stuff I do, clearly you’re hateful and a terrible person.” That’s not tolerance, you’re asking for celebration. Which is all well and good, but I don’t think celebration should be required. People are all entitled to their own opinion, and if my opinion is that, say, orange is a terrible color and people who think orange is awesome are wrong, I’m allowed to believe that. Now, I don’t think people should be allowed to go and scream at people wearing orange and call them names or anything, but just saying that people who think orange is awesome are wrong isn’t hateful, it’s just an opinion. My opinion isn’t hurting anyone. Disagreement is not the same as animosity. I just think that people shouldn’t think that “tolerance” means “complete acceptance and praise”, it means “I agree that you’re entitled to your opinion, even though I think it’s wrong. I can coexist with you without agreeing with you.” People always say that Christians are “intolerant” because the Bible says that homosexual acts are sinful. But that’s not intolerance, that’s an opinion. Now sure, calling homosexual people slurs and refusing to associate with them would be intolerance, but simply believing that they’re wrong and stating that fact isn’t. The Bible actually teaches tolerance (“love your neighbor as yourself”, “love your enemies and pray for them”, “do unto others what you would have them do unto you”, any of that ring a bell?), however it does not say that we have to agree with everything everyone does.

There is usually no difference between opposing groups except their labels. Left/Right wing: Both have extreme opinions against people that don't share their views and consider any means necessary to archive their goals Bigots/SJWs: Both make use of racism to boost their messages, both use minorities to their advantage and call people that disagree with them names. So let's use the american sense of left/right, because it means something starker elsewhere. the Left wishes for equal rights for all, e.g. that no-one should be forced to pay for medical care or left with the choice of dying in the street of something treatable. The Right wishes to have absolutely no social responsibility, ie if you can't pay for your medical care, you must just die in the street, because it's not their job to help you. Tell me, which of these two positions seems extreme to you? To me, the right position seems extreme. I can't see what meaningful way, trying to help other people, should be considered "extreme". But i feel that leaving someone to die is pretty extreme.

This post I disagree with at: 1) Visceral level and 2) Logical level. They are are denying the existence of good and evil, based on the fact that some people that evil has infiltrated the good side. That is like saying that since some cops are corrupt, that all cops are corrupt. Moreover, it is demonstrably incorrect. Bigots are not the same as 'sjw's, (in fact so called SJWs are extremely rare as compared to Bigots, and most people that hate bigots are not SJWS. Calling people names and 'using racism to boost your method" is NOT the thing that is wrong with Bigots, if that is all they did, most people would be fine with Bigots. The fact that some hypocrisy exists in the 'good side' does not make them evil. Evil is far worse than mere hypocrisy.

If we are to survive as a species we need to get off this planet and unfortunately the extremely rich and their slaves are the only ones who will make it. COVID has taught me that as a species, we can't even wear a single piece of clothing, use free health care, or stay inside for 6 weeks to keep our neighbors from dying. Elon Musk may love to romanticize going to Mars, but it’s a frozen, nearly airless hellscape where liquid water won’t be able to exist outside of pressurized buildings, and that is bathed in deadly solar and cosmic radiation due the lack of a magnetic field and a robust atmosphere. Imagine living in Antarctica for the rest of your life, but going outside without a spacesuit will kill you, and you’re all likely to die from cancer.

I don't believe in "good" and "evil." I think most people lean on these ideas as a way to simplify the complexities and challenges of the real world i.e. it's convenient to just say Bezos is Satan incarnate, rather than learn his upbringing and how his brain works against the backdrop of an endlessly competitive system that will inevitably have someone at the top. Worst of all, we might then have to accept that we share many traits with him, and he's just better and luckier in the right ways. We all run on our own blend of motivations and I think discussing these openly and evenly with a goal to understand is the only path to any kind of harmony. In other words, I believe common ground has to be built, not merely found.

Basically, yes. Succeed by getting ahead - better and luckier can be talent, skill, money, genetics, or pure chance of any sort. My point is that stepping on others' heads is part of natural selection as well as the rules of capitalism, and these things aren't 'evil', they're just systems that many of us dislike on some level, and more people agreeing doesn't make it 'good', either. In the end, billionaires don't care about your morals just like you don't care about their stock values, yet those are your respective motivators.

Depends on your morals. If you’re going with the commonly accepted (read: Christian-based) morals, then yes, cultures that perform human sacrifice, keep slaves in terrible conditions, etc. would be less moral than ones that don’t. Although the ones who don’t often have their own big problems, they’re just not as much of the stereotypical ones.

I am of a mind that boiling morals down to the basics is to acknowledge that all sentient beings should enjoy equal rights and protections under jurisprudence. Mental health issues should not be stigmatized. I can’t talk freely about my mental health illnesses without being stigmatized, or outright ostracized. I’ve even lost friends once one diagnosis came out. And sometimes, I hate to say this as we are Christian, but often Christians are the worst culprits when it comes to being judgmental over mental health problems.

I do think some kind of national service seems like a good idea. My dad had to do it in the army and said it was one of the most horrible and pointless parts of his life. But something which helps people and is underfunded, like working as a carer, seems like it would be useful for everyone.

We had that way back in the communist area of my country. Now we don't. People were more responsible for taking care of things (clean streets, not breaking public property, fixing public property, etc), also people were more handy and hardworking. Now men are pussies, nobody cares about public spaces, a lot of vandalism just for the fun of it, a lot of people not working, a lot of entitled brats who never learned how to properly take care of themselves and be responsible members of society. The men who went to serve the army right after becoming 18 can be definitely differentiated from the ones who didn't, they became real men and gentlemen, compared to the brats we get after this practice was stopped and they stay their mother's babies way after their 30s.

Not all Nazis were terrible people. I know that sounds super bad, given how terrible the actions of the Nazi party were, but hear me out. Everyone always uses Nazis as examples of unforgivably terrible people, but often the lower level party members were only in the party under threat of death. Hitler and his upper level cronies were terrible, their actions were unspeakably evil, I definitely agree with that. But there actually have been reports of people in the lower levels actively trying to destroy the party from the inside (unsuccessfully). And for many of them, it was either join the party or die, and joining the party seemed like the better option at the time. Also, think about the youth programs. These kids have been brought up as “future comrades”, their whole life or whole schooling has been focused on Nazi ideology, that’s really all they know. It’s not entirely their fault. If you had been taught for as long as you could remember that some people weren’t people and were enemies to be killed, and you were never told anything different, ever, don’t you think you might have started to believe it? It’s the same with many cults, the people who were convinced to join weren’t at fault for the actions of the leaders. Islamic extremists too, yes, blowing up buildings and killing tons of people is very bad from most people’s perspective, but often that’s all they know. Young kids are very impressible, what they’re taught is what they believe. Just because someone is associated with a group that did something terrible doesn’t mean the individual person is evil.

A lot of people are confusing personality with mental illness. strange behaviors, social , cultural differences vary from different areas and environments. it would be more convenient for professionals and to people themselves that " that is wrong with them" is just a part of their personality, and correcting these traits takes harder to correct then just taking a pill.

The people saying that have no way of knowing whether the people they're talking to "deserve" it or not. Not really, 10 thousand years ago, an individual had to work, and work hard, just to stay alive. That's not free, that's a price of a great deal of effort and energy. And today, a deep breath of fresh clean air isn't necessarily "free" either, and there are plenty of examples of no clean air available at any price (western US wildfires, bad-air days in Beijing, for example.). Clean air, too, has a price to pay.

Well, given that you made an error in a single sentence, that could certainly be true for you, but you cannot apply that to everyone. In 1903 almost anyone could learn how to fly an aircraft with a hour or so of training, but I'd challenge a "dumb" person to even start a modern jet aircraft, never mind fly it - and yet people still do it. Technology doesn't make anyone dumber, but technology in the hands of stupid people certainly serves to highlight their deficit.

It's just that people have a very narrow concept of irony and expect the individual vignettes to convey a sense of the worst thing happening and the least opportune time (poetic irony), and most don't. But there is another kind of irony, Cosmic Irony - that sense that your life is a joke that god is having at your expense. That's what the song is about. Things are 'a little too ironic' for it to be anything but god toying with you.

I saw an interesting article the other day. It said that the conspiracy theorists/antivaxxers are like that because they won't accept facts from normal sources - WHO, SAGE, Peer reviewed research etc. They will only accept conspiracies. This prevents anyone from piercing the shell of disinformation with solid proof. As there are no 'vaccine hesitant' people left (they're all antivaxxers now) then we should ignore them. Where I am we have only 7% who haven't been vaccinated - many of them because they are unable to - we have enough, forget the antivaxxers..

I think people worry the silly arguments will spread if they are not challenged. It's hard to stay impassive when confronted with such...wrongness. And in the case of anti-vaxxers and racists, they can do real damage. But I acknowledge there is a difference between mocking their arguments and holding them up as figures of ridicule.

From the United States here, I want to get rid of celebrating the Fourth of July, it is very confusing who works, who is off, what days, some get three, four and five day holidays when it is midweek. Congress changed multiple other holidays to make them Monday holidays, change our Independence day to the first Friday in July. The Declaration, from what I understand, was signed over a 9 day period, and the Fourth was chosen as a middle ground, as it were. We could stay up late celebrating on Friday night, then have two more days to clean up, while always having three days off in a row.

the school system for children is ruined. Most kids only get at most 6 hours of sleep everyday and thats if your lucky. As a high school student i have to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to catch the bus at 6:20. I go to sleep around 10:30 which i would say is a reasonable time especially because i wok 2 jobs and have many after school activities and have to make time for my friends and family. i havent slept in past 9 in about 3 months. I would also agree that teens are doing more than the average adult and when i hear them complain i get a little angry

The school system is broken and we need to reform it immediately. most kids barley get the healthy amount of sleep they need every day and work multiple jobs and have after school acivities and they do this for almost 200 days straight with very small breaks ranging from 1 day to a week maximum. During thoe breaks we are given work to do aswell. teens need a break. Our developing minds are being halted by the amount of stress and anxiety that our daily lives bring us.

I don't recognise this. We have free childcare with educational development then primary schooling followed by secondary schooling. Hours of attendance are 9 - 3 daily. Homework/projects are somewhat reduced now and further education as well as higher education (to university level) is free for residents. Kids can read, spell and do maths very well and aren't denied the opportunity to go further based on the wealth of their parents either. Is the OP talking about the US??

This sounds like the US... Our school system is based off of Industrial Era factories from over 100 years ago and it's ridiculous. I don't think we'd ever need publicly-sponsored childcare because people with grown children or no children would have to pay for that... Also, 90% of the problem is that people pump out kids they don't really want and expect public schools to babysit them. I hope Covid shutdowns made people rethink those poor reproductive habits... It would be a game changer if they would re-implement shop, Home Ec, and recess and get rid of homework + most standardized testing. Maybe half a day for learning math, reading, spelling, and science, a stint of physical activity, and a half day of learning life skills (changing tires, making budgets, sewing, cooking, etc) or sending the kids to the school library so they can read.

I think we should cap the difference between the highest and lowest employees take home pay, and include bonuses as part of income as well as expenses. Watch the people at the bottoms wages rise when the upper management can't have theirs without it.

That'd probably be a cool thing. An engineer at work told me that years ago upper-management types earned about 40x the salary of the lowest-paid workers in a company. But that's ballooned to 400x. Many uber-wealthy people just do their research so they only pay what they have to (having people file their own taxes leads to a system where they are cheated out of their money), and they give to charity to receive tax cuts. You'll find that many uber-wealthy people do a lot for charity. More than politicians, for sure. Making them pay more will only result in fraud, or they'll run for office and change the whole system.

I think it depends on what is raised. If you raise wages of, say, PAs in offices, the effect on the economy *might* be that the shareholders get 0,0000001% less when exercising options. If you're talking about a garden service, raising some guy's wages to push a lawnmower is NOT going to push the price of macdonalds' up. It's not a simple 1:1 effect.

If for example I raised my housekeeper's wage by USD 60, he'd be able to maybe buy a cheap car or something. At present he can't afford it. But to me, USD 60 is almost nothing. It really depends on your ethics and the relative sacrifice you make. To you, USD 50 may seem not that much, to a homeless person, that is food for a month.

Why not have a system like NHS? You pay 'National Insurance' and everything is covered. The level you pay goes according to what you earn but entitlement is level. It isn't free as you pay this insurance but it is 'free at the point of use' ie they don't ask for money at the hospital. In my country eye tests, all medicines and dental checkups are also 'free at the point of use' The countries with privatised systems seem to pay more and get less..

People generally don't become overweight on purpose the way they try to look like underweight models. A lot of people, myself included, are underweight & don't have an eating disorder. I eat over 3k calories a day and still can't gain effectively. People assume when you are underweight that is intentional, they get mean, call you anorexic and assume you have mental health struggles due to your weight. Sometimes people assume you're a drug addict, based only off of the fact that you are underweight. I've been trying to gain weight since I was 14, and I'm nearly 40 now. Sometimes, the human body just does its own thing no matter how we wish it would behave. Please don't assume all thin people have gotten that way on purpose.

Of course not everyone who is thin has an eating disorder or other problem, and it's not okay to bully anyone or make negative comments about anyone's body. Preferring summer to winter, and spring to autumn aren't really controversial, but they are opinions. Despite my enjoyment of being indoors, there are health benefits to being outside. Again, another non-controversial opinion. "G" makes different sounds, which is why "legend" isn't pronounced as "leg-end" (unless you're an idiot) and why "egg" isn't pronounced as "ejj" (also unless you're an idiot). Chickens would have evolved from something, but many species would have laid eggs before what we know to be a chicken had reached it's current stage of evolution. Toilet paper is usually placed on the holder horizontally, so it is sideways. Whether it hangs over or under is irrelevant, as long as it doesn't tear badly. What does being tired and grumpy have to do with productivity? I'm always tired and grumpy, but it doesn't affect my work because I'm a professional. And if night staff cry, that's a "them" issue, not a "time of day" issue. Especially if they cry a lot. Hair colour does not define intelligence, it's just an overused joke. Nobody should be Instagram/TikTok famous. There is no social benefit to watching the Paul brothers trash a house. No accent is better than another. What matters is we can understand one another. Free speech must have its limits. Hate, intolerance and *deliberate* desinformation should not be allowed to exist without consequences. People often fail to realize that freedom of speech is not freedom of consequence. Allow intolerance to flourish and it will get into positions of power, destroying the tolerant society that let it exist in the first place.

It has taken me quite a while to understand "freedom of speech is not freedom of consequence"...However, I'm proud to say that I DID (and still do) speak my truth to power and proudly accepted my consequence of going to jail for it. And why not? Why can't people provide for their children, or other descendants? What if providing your child with an inheritance kept them from living on the streets, allowed them to buy a car so they could get to and from work, or was what they needed in order to save their own child's life with an expensive medical procedure? An inheritance is left to help those who need it so they don't have to struggle so badly. If they choose to squander it instead, that's their own stupid fault.

Well I live in Norway so medical procedures/needs is not billed to the patient, thus 0,- is the cost to the receiver of any treatment. and we have a well working public transport system in Europe so cars aren't really needed. One thing is leaving some money, but wealth? nope, its one of the things that keeps inequality up. Better it goes back into circulation so it can benefit all instead of a few that where just lucky enough to be born into it. See it is a way of thanking the society that gave you the opportunity to amass wealth, and live the life a very few people ever could. Anyway, if one is lucky enough to have wealthy parents whom created their on wealth, just by learning from them , their network and access to people and enterprises is a great benefit few people have. They can make their on fortunes like all the rest of the non 1%'ers out there. And still have a lot better chances then the rest because of reasons mentioned.

Anything posted in a thread devoted to your most controversial opinion is not sarcasm. Own it. We grow as a species by sharing our thoughts, working them out as a group, someone admitting they were wrong, and the whole group gets better. Like mutations in biology, 99% of new opinions are deleterious and need to be weeded out but that 1% is the novel new thing that saves the species. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with what you posted. I am disagreeing with your pretense that your thoughts weren't real. The original Thorfinn ended up in Vinland because he had a crazy idea. This is a chance to put our money where our mouth is. If we care about those people, we need to start providing that financial and social infrastructure. As long as its legal for restaurants and grocery stores to throw away food to keep prices up instead of giving it away, children will go to bed starving. As long as there are more empty vacation homes than homeless people, people will freeze to death on the streets. As long as the median income of one country is 60x that of another, there will never be opportunity. As long as there's a price tag on health, the wealthy will survive watching the poor die on TV.

Actually, Thorfin, when the pandemic was just over 1 year old, I was on an appropriately socially-distanced que at a coffee shop. I overhead a serious conversation between two residents from the nearby hospital. They were discussing their belief that COVID was actually Nature's way of culling the population. They said that those who were choosing to NOT be vaccinated were doing the rest of the population a huge service because they were allowing their "stupid genes" to be totally wiped away from the world's gene pool. So...there are folks who think you are NOT sarcastic, but that you are thoughtful and observant!

This is for LGBTQ+ people only and weirdly specific. Just a small thing about terminology. "Multisexual umbrella" makes more sense than "bisexual umbrella." Obviously use any label you want. But multisexual is just liking multiple genders, which encompasses a lot of sexualities. Bi makes more sense as a label for liking specifically two genders, and being under the multisexual umbrella. Again use any label you want, this is just what makes sense to me.

Well, I see you requested this be answered by LGBTQ+ only. I consider myself to be a woman in an active heterosexual relationship. But since no one has replied nor voted up or down, I'd like to throw in my 2 cents. I very much like your terminology! Thanks to scientific research on brain function, endocrinology etc.we now have a much greater understanding of human sexuality. We now know that throughout our lives, from birth to death, our sexuality exists on an ever-changing plane (including a person's gender identity, preference in the gender of one's partner, libido, external genitalia, internal organs etc.). Therefore, the phrase "multi sexual umbrella" makes INFINITE sense to me, too!! Smart linguistic choice there!!

So, basically, people suffering from depression and other mental issues shouldn't be treated for them, but instead congratulated for wanting to commit suicide? I wanted to kill myself once a very long time ago. I was too stupid to choose the right pills and felt very very sleepy instead. I have no idea what I was thinking, but now I know life is great. My point is don't use permanent solutions for temporary problems. Euthanasia due to severe and painful illness is a very different thing, which doesn't seem to be the one you're talking about.

Plain. do you consider depression (or other conditions classified as mental illnesses) NOT to be a bona fide illness? True depression is severe & painful. It has physical symptoms. Not all depression or other mental illnesses can be "cured" by treatment with anti-depressants & therapy. Do you think that a person with unrelenting depression should NO be legally allowed to obtain death by assisted suicide (euthanasia)? I'm not arguing, I'm just trying to understand your position. By contrast, I know a man who is 96, has no major physical illnesses (has sore joints, hard of hearing, a little forgetful...nothing severe). He has been a widower for 10 years and deeply grieves his wife. The pandemic has forced him to be alone in his home for two years. He does not drive. He is weary. He is fatigued. He is 96. He is spiritual, has lived a caring and full life and now is truly ready to die. He welcomes it. Why should he not have the option to legally chose to end his life?

It is an historical fact that some religions espouse beliefs that are not inclusive or tolerant of "others". But it is ALSO historical fact that religions provide society with helpful structure, moral guidance, and spiritual growth and comfort.

If you ever have your own kids, you'll understand where they're comming from. So many things cleared for me when I got my kids. Althow I don't feel or make them feel that they owe me. It was our decision to have them, our job is to train them as good as we can (and they let us) for their happiest possible life and let them go.

I was brought up being told you ONLY take out a loan to 1) pay for your college/university education, 2) to purchase a house and 3) MAYBE to buy a car. You ONLY buy what you have the CASH for (not what the bank says you have "enough credit" to buy). Fresh out of college, I did NOT follow my parents' advise. I ended up spending 13 years trying to pay off my foolish use of credit cards during my first two years after graduation. Those were really rough years of HALF my salary going to pay off the interest on those credit cards! It is better to live BELOW your means (i.e. don't spend your entire paycheck on what you need to live! Choose a simpler life-style & SAVE MONEY every payday). This would be my urgent message to all young folks. That and "be kind to everybody". My Babci (Polish grandmother) would say, "Don't spit into the wind. It might get blown back into your face"....That would be my second "urgent message".

I'm pretty impaired when it comes to technology, IT etc. so could someone with greater experience in this area please explain/clarify this for me: I thought "online" actually IS "technology time". Can one be considered as being "online" if they're speaking on a telephone but not utilizing Face-time? I'm confused, genuinely. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or snarly here. True - but worry how this is put across by you. Women ARE the victims most, but not all, of the time. Attitudes to women are changing. Women have previously been seen as so weak they could not commit violence against men or others. This is slowly changing as women are being realised, slowly, as autonomous and responsible. Although this may not be true in some societies (like the US)

Force-feeding, breast binding, foot binding, and female genital mutilation are activities that are usually carried out by mothers or other female relatives. This means thousands of women will mutilate their own children, or even kill them based on their sex, before they will protect them from facing the hardships they had to endure. Women who commit acts of sexual abuse and domestic violence are often ignored or trivialized, leaving their victims lost and denied validity. There are many countries where men have virtually no shelters or safe spaces where they can turn in order to leave their bad environments. To solve the world's problems, women will have to be as ready to change just as much as men.

In law - you can. But it has never been considered acceptable. I remember when I was young if you saw a woman hit, punch or slap a man you'd think 'what did he do that she had to hit him?' Now, thankfully, we realise that women can also abuse men and those who do are, increasingly, being prosecuted for it. My worry is that this 'being allowed to fight back' is being used by those who actually just want to abuse women..

I would say that as a species, human beings are not WISE. We probably may be the smartest in the Animal Kingdom, but as a group, I think we certainly lack wisdom and have inadequate ability to appropriately plan for the future. I also think there is substantial evidence that we are very weak in our ability to learn from past experience. Otherwise, we would have long ago determined how to resolve differences without going to war!

I'm all for all kinds of people fostering and adopting children but I do not like that if an agency does find a home not a healthy environment for a child (for a valid reason) the couple - or single person- can cry discrimination threaten to sue to force the agency to change their decision. If a straight couple doesn't qualify they don't have the same recourse.
