UPDATE! After reading these comments I googled "webworms",(thanks Tom Lokay). These don't seem to be around in the UK, especially not in Burnley, but have now established it is the work of the spindle ermine moth caterpillar, (thanks Thomas Turnbull). As someone with a ridiculous moth phobia (ridiculous because I love butterflies!), I now feel the need to avoid Towneley woods for the rest of my life, and to bleach my phone!!
